I remember the day as if it were yesterday. My mother and I were in the car on our way to a family member’s house- just like any other day. We were driving down the main road in my town when the car was t-boned by another car that had run a red light. Our Honda Accord was smashed to pieces in the middle of the intersection. My mother was bleeding and the front of the car had crashed on top of my legs- I couldn’t feel either leg, but at the same time, tremendous pain shot through my body, not to mention fear. I looked over at the car that hit us and it was just as demolished- the front of the car was smoking; honestly, I feared that one of the vehicles might combust.

I tried to get out of my vehicle, but I could not open the door. The impact from the crash caused too much damage and my injured mother and I had no choice but to wait for the EMTs to arrive to help us get out of the vehicle.

Several cop cars, two ambulances and a fire truck rushed to the scene. The doors to our car were pried open with the jaws of life as the man who hit us was placed onto a gurney and lifted into the ambulance. I don’t know what his condition was, but if it even paled in comparison to the way his car looked after the accident, he was in serious medical condition.

When my mother was removed from our vehicle, she was treated by EMS workers for cuts and scrapes associated with the accident, but the EMS technicians said that she would be fine. I wasn’t as lucky.

When the doors on my side of the car were pried away, it revealed to the medical help that I had broken at least one of my legs, if not both. I was carefully removed from the vehicle and placed in a wheelchair then brought to the ambulance. The EMTs drove me to the local hospital where they took X-rays of both of my legs.

I waited anxiously in my bed for the results of the X-rays as the nurses cleaned up my cuts from the shattered glass. My mother sat by my bedside praying over me, but most of me was just thankful that I was the one in the hospital bed instead of her.

The doctor came into the room with my X-ray results. As an athlete and an overall busy person who relies on my legs heavily, I feared for the worst. Luckily, it could have been worse. The doctor revealed to me that I shattered my right knee but that my left leg did not break in the impact. Although I would have to undergo intense surgery and physical rehabilitation to repair my right knee, the doctor assured me that I would be walking fine again within several months. It wasn’t the greatest news I had ever received, but through my eyes, my mother and I were okay, and I was grateful.

The accident changed me. The surgery was difficult but I got through it with the support of my family. I may have walked out of the hospital with a broken right knee, but I also carried with me a greater appreciation for my family, as well as my life. In the accident I realized the preciousness of every moment and ultimately the car crash changed my life for the better.

Since the accident I have become closer to God, my family and my friends. I understand the importance of what true love is and what it means to savor each moment. My rehabilitation for my knee might have been a physical healing process, but I also went through an emotional rehabilitation, where my spirit healed from the accident.

I could have died that day. Worse, I could have lost my best friend and my mother that day. I carry the accident with me in my mind every day- it is my constant reminder to cherish life and appreciate every moment. I have a set of rosary beads that I know hang off the rear view window of my own car, as my personal reminder of that day. When I look at those beads, I think of my mother, I think of God, and I am truly grateful for being where I am today.

For a long time I struggled to look at my glass as half full after the accident. I wanted reasons for questions that had no answers. Why us? Why me? Why my knee? For months I took those questions and fostered them into hostility.

Today is different though. Today I carry my scars like badges of honor. Yes I did get in a horrible car accident, and here I am today. Clearly I wasn’t meant to die that day- and I know that ultimately I am on this earth to serve a larger purpose. Instead of being ashamed of my scars, today I look at them as markers of strength- proof that I can overcome anything. That accident may have broken my knee but it didn’t break my spirit. If anything, it made my spirit stronger and helped me get to where I am today.

Car Accidents Causes and Effects Essay

Drunk driving, lack of driving experience, excessive self-confidence in personal driving skills, excessive speed.

Technical progress in the automotive industry has led to the fact that the car has ceased to be a luxury item today and is an indispensable attribute of most people’s lives. However, because of the interest in increasing vehicle capacity and the spread of machinery, more and more road accidents began to occur. The reasons for them are different, and the consequences of accidents also differ; therefore, it is possible to describe the most common causes of crashes on the roads and the effects that they have.

Drunk driving causes accidents quite often and the fact that many cases are fatal is sad. When sitting at the wheel in the state of alcohol intoxication, the driver puts at risk not only his or her life but also the lives of pedestrians and other road users. Laws against drunken drivers are toughened annually; nevertheless, it does not stop some people from violating them. Various cases of death through the fault of such drivers occur quite often, and the consequences of these disasters can be utterly unpredictable since drunk people often do not realize what they are doing when sitting at the wheel.

Those people who do not have much driving experience quite often become involuntary participants in road accidents. The consequences of crashes can be different: it can be both a minor damage to someone else’s vehicle and a serious disaster. The fact is that the lack of experience is often a severe problem in situations that require immediate solutions. The person who has spent many years at the wheel has a good chance of reacting to an unexpected obstacle and avoiding a crash. At the same time, an inexperienced driver can inadvertently provoke a traffic accident and become its culprit. Therefore, the less experienced the driver is, the higher the risk to get into a crash.

In addition to the lack of experience, excessive self-confidence in personal driving skills and disregard for simple safety rules can also become the causes of accidents. As a rule, it applies to those people who have been driving for a long time and believe that they do not need to worry about their lives. An unfastened seat belt, the absence of a fire extinguisher and other violations can lead to irreversible consequences, and not only the perpetrator of a road accident but also a pedestrian or other driver can suffer. It is important to remember that it is essential to be vigilant on the road and not to assume that a significant driving experience is a complete guarantee of safety. Sometimes, excessive self-confidence can lead to dangerous consequences.

One of the frequent causes of accidents is the excess of the speed limit. This violation is dangerous because the person driving at high speed can not respond timely to the threat that has arisen. In this case, the damage from the crash while driving fast will be significantly greater than that from slow driving. The effects of accidents caused by such violations can be severe, and it is crucial not to allow speeding.

Thus, the most common causes of accidents are drunk driving, the lack of driving experience or too much self-confidence, as well as speeding. The consequences of an accident can be extremely severe both for drivers themselves and for people around them. The compliance with traffic rules will help to avoid accidents and be safe.

⚙️ College Essay about Cars: Useful Tips

Preparing for composting an essay about a car, you may wonder where to start and how to handle it. In this section, we will introduce some helpful tips. See what you should include and elaborate on in your car essay.

 • Get creative. Some students may think that essays on cars are not the right place for creativity. Writing about cars should be full of some specific terms and descriptions of various car details. However, it is a mistake. Essays on cars can omit such issues but remain informative and catchy.
 • Keep your opinion to yourself. You don’t have to present a positive or negative conclusion about cars. You are not required to have an unequivocal statement when you write about such a difficult topic. In order to fulfill this requirement, you can even use a thesis statement creator to come up with unbiased foundation for your content.
 • Don’t try to say everything at once . Your essay has a word limit, so you’re better to find one topic to talk about. Focus on one aspect of the issue, such as environmental impact, and state your position with evidence.
 • Change an angle. If you are not interested in a topic but need to write about cars, look at the subject from the other side. If you are not willing to elaborate on ecological impact, write about races. If you don’t want to talk about sports, write about the invention of the first car. The subject is extensive, so everyone will find something of their own, especially if you were not given a topic in advance.

Thus, writing essays about cars can also be exciting. If you think for a while, you will find ways of writing your paper creatively.

Thank you for reading this article! We hope that you found it useful. If that is the case, don’t forget to share it with your friends and comment.

Cheap Custom Writing Service

Disappointment, disbelief and fear filled my mind as I lye on my side, sandwiched between the cold, soft dirt and the hot, slick metal of the car. The weight of the car pressed down on the lower half of my body with monster force. It did not hurt, my body was numb. All I could feel was the car hood’s mass stamping my body father and farther into the ground. My lungs felt pinched shut and air would neither enter nor escape them. My mind was buzzing. What had just happened? In the distance, on that cursed road, I saw cars driving by completely unaware of what happened, how I felt. I tried to yell but my voice was unheard. All I could do was wait. Wait for someone to help me or wait to die.

The third maddening buzz of my alarm woke me as I groggily slid out of bed to the shower. It was the start of another routine morning, or so I thought. I took a shower, quarreled with my sister over which clothes she should wear for that day and finished getting myself ready. All of this took a little longer than usual, not a surprise, so we were running late. We hopped into the interior of my sleek, white Thunderbird and made our way to school.

With music blasting, voices singing and talking, it was another typical ride to school with my sister. Because of our belated departure, I went fast, too fast. We started down the first road to our destination. This road is about three miles long and filled with little hills. As we broke the top of one of the small, blind hills in the middle of the right lane was a dead deer. Without any thought, purely by instinct I pulled the wheel of the car to the left and back over to the right. No big deal but I was going fast. The car swerved back to the left, to the right, to the left. Each time I could feel the car scratching the earth with its side. My body jolted with the sporadic movements of the car. The car swerved to the right for the last time. With my eyes sealed tight, I could feel my body float off the seat of the car.

I opened my eyes to see the black road in the distance above me. I could feel the cold ground on the side of my body. I couldn’t move and couldn’t understand why. It had happened so quickly. I lay there until my mind comprehended what had happened. I was wedged between the hood of the car and the dirt. The car rustled, every movement of the car pierced my body. It was my sister. She was okay. I could see her slowly crawl out of the back seat window then tear away. I opened my mouth to yell her name but air failed to escape my lips. Gasping like a fish out of water, I dreamily lied there until someone would help.

I heard an uneasy voice in the distance, “Betsy! Oh my God! Betsy!” It was my dad. I was disappointed and embarrassed of myself. I had let him down. My voice yelled for help as my heart beat rapidly with fear and relief. The car jiggled. I could feel the weight of the car lift slowly off me. For the first time, intense pain struck my lower half. “Crawl out of there,” someone yelled to me. I pushed against the ground with all my might but I couldn’t move. The pain was excruciating, nevertheless I could not feel the lower half of my body. I felt paralyzed. Still struggling to move, I felt strong arms glide around my shoulders and under my armpits. They drug me out of the way of the falling car. My dad had saved me. As I lye on the weed covered ground, several people surrounded me. I dreamily looked around and saw my sister sitting Indian style next to me, plastered in blood. She had run barefoot to the nearest house to call 911 and my dad. She was my angel. We sat there in shock. Was it just a dream? Everything had happened so fast. Every minute lying on that dirt felt like a lifetime. Strangers kept poking every inch of my body and prodding me with questions that I didn’t have answers to. Finally, the ambulance arrived. They rushed over to my sister and I. They asked me a number of questions that I obliviously answered and started to get me ready to go. With a bright orange brace around my neck they slowly pushed me onto a stiff backboard. Each tiny movement they made pierced my lower half like a knife. We finally made it into the ambulance and made our way to the hospital.

My sister and I were sent to Delta Hospital. My sister was all right. She had stitches in her eye, head and elbow. I was relieved that she was not severely injured. I don’t know what I would have done if something extremely bad had happened to her. I was sent to the Denver Memorial Hospital, where I went under surgery that same night around midnight. A plate was put on my hipbones to help them stay together. I was in the hospital for six days and in a wheel chair for around eight weeks.

I have now realized how precious life really is and that it can be taken away in a single minute. This is even easier when you are driving a car. One little mishap can result in extreme injury or even death. I am lucky that my sister is all right and that I lived. I will never forget that moment when I was lying on the ground, disappointment flooding my mind, waiting.

Car Accident Essays

A car accident is an unfortunate and often frightening experience. It can be a minor fender bender or a more serious crash involving multiple vehicles, resulting in severe injury or even death. Regardless of the severity of the accident, it is important to take all necessary precautions to ensure that everyone involved is safe and their rights are protected. The most important thing if you are ever involved in a car accident is to remain calm and call 911 immediately for help. Make sure you do not move anyone until medical personnel arrive at the scene as any movement could cause further harm. If you cannot move due to injury, don’t worry about getting out of your vehicle unless it’s on fire or there’s imminent danger like another vehicle approaching quickly from behind. Be sure to note any visible injuries sustained by yourself and others in the incident before leaving the scene ” this information will be useful when filing insurance claims or police reports later on down the line. Before exchanging details with anyone else involved in the incident, take pictures (if possible) of all damaged cars along with license plates and other relevant details that may be helpful during legal proceedings such as skid marks, debris etc.. Also exchange contact information with those present including name, address, phone number and insurance details but also try to get witness statements if they offer them up freely; this can prove invaluable should legal action ensue afterwords. Even if both parties agree that no one was at fault for causing the accident at first glance its best practice to have all relevant evidence captured just in case anything changes down the line. Finally make sure you report everything accurately ” even small details ” when filing your insurance claim so that nothing gets lost in translation during processing; failing to do so could result in delays or denials of coverage which nobody wants. Remember: safety always comes first following a car accident so stay alert & cautious while going through these steps afterwards too.

When I was a child, I went through a lot of different events, among those events I had an incident that would never be forgotten. After that event had happened to me, I did learn a lesson from it and it has helped me a lot in making various decisions in my life. It also has taught me how to deal with life's problems that we all face. This story started when I was fifteen years old. It happened in my home country which is Saudi Arabia. The beginning of the story was that, I used to love cars and I was a little bit more interested in driving them than other children were at that time. I was enjoying learning a lot of information about cars and listening to people while they were talking about them. Absolutely, I was addicted to cars and driving. After a while, I decided to tell my father to give me an opportunity and let me drive. I started telling my father almost every single day that I wanted to drive. In the beginning, he totally disagreed with that idea, but I kept convincing him that I was able to drive at that age until I could see that in his face he would let me drive soon. Two days later, when we were in the car going home, he said he would take me to an area where there were no cars and let me do what I had dreamed of for a long time, which was driving a car. The next day, as my father promised me we went far away from our city. He stopped the car and looked at me, and then he said "now you can drive." After that, he began teaching me how to drive step by step. No one can imagine how happy I was while driving. We spent about forty five minutes over there. It was one of the most amazing times that I have ever had. While we were coming back home, my father told me he would let me drive once a week. It was a surprise for me to drive every week. A few months later, my father traveled with his friends as usual. He usually travels to other countries just for visiting. Without any planning, I walked into my parents' room. My family was sitting in there talking to each other about different things. I suddenly saw my father's car key was on the table. I immediately thought about stealing it. I said to myself it was a chance and I should take advantage of. I waited in the room where we were sitting until everybody left. Then, I calmly took the car key and put it in my pocket without letting anyone know what I was doing. I stayed home for several minutes to ensure that everything was going well. After that I got out of my house with my small pillow which I put on the seat so I could see the street clearly. I started driving the car and I felt everything was okay which was not. I drove for about six to seven minutes until I found myself between many cars. Since I was a little, I could not control the car in that situation, as a result, I had an accident. When I saw some cars gathered in front of me, I felt like I was panicked. All of the sudden, the car which was in front of my car stopped. I hit the break but it was too late. Then I hit the front car. However, it was a small accident, the other man and I did not get hurt, but the two cars had a little damage. Even though that accident was my mistake, the man whose car I hit, was very kind and generous. He let me go without paying him any amount of money. Once I got home, I told my mother what I did, and she was really disappointed in me. I was scared by that time and told my mother that I would be punished if my father knew that, she responded "you should." Then my mother was really kind too, she understood the situation I was in. She helped me by calling her brother and giving him some money to fix the car. Several days later the car had successfully fixed and was parked exactly where it had been. A week or a little bit more my father came back from his travel. During the next two days he had been told about my story by my mother. He did not expect that from me at all. It was like a surprise for him, but he did not react as I thought he would. He talked to me and directed me to the right way by giving some advice. He informed me to be more responsible for all what I do and never making serious mistakes like that. I apologized to him and promised I would never do it again. I have learned a perfect lesson from my mistake that I made. I put myself in danger, I could have killed myself or continued the rest of my life being disabled. That would have certainly prevented me from achieving some of my goals. After all of that, I have realized how dangerous it was to make a decision without thinking about what the consequences. Because of the accident I learned to value my life even more. It was a life changing event for me that made me realize that I truly have one life and I must do my best in order to make good use of it. I also learned that I am not only responsible for myself but for other people as well. In reality it is difficult to make choices because there are a number of people to consider. I consider myself lucky that I got the chance to share my experience with other people, because it made me realize the value of being cautious and responsible. My would have been different if I got severely injured back then, but it I know that fate wanted something different for me, that is why I got spared. I can say that I am a better person because of the accident, although it was traumatic on my part, but at least it showed me the importance of manning up to my problems. There is no escape route in life. I need to make sure that I view my problem as my outlet for growth and development. My decision back then could have not only drastically changed, but the man that got caught in the accident with me. I realized that I put not only his life on the line but also his family, who could have been dependent to him. I saw the valuable lesson of caring for other people, because in the end of the day we all belong in one environment. My decision will directly and indirectly affect other people. I know that because of that car incident I proved to myself that I can be better, even if it was a ‘dark’ part of my past, I considered it a blessing in disguise because without it I would not be who I am today.

Car accident as essay topic?

I drafted an essay which I could use for a bunch of schools. The topic: getting into a car accident as a result of procrastination, and learning a lesson on responsibility and time-management

Is using a car accident for an essay a good idea? I have a pretty captivating intro IMO, but the rest, I don’t know. Would it be wise to include that I was a slacker, procrastinator, etc.? The main idea is that after the accident I learned to change so that I could do better in life, I’m not sure if that’s a good personal thing they could learn more about me.

Yes, include your flaws and how you grew and ultimately changed as a person.

Sounds good, just don’t make it like “This car accident drastically altered the path of my life; I went from a slacker and procrastinator to a church-going, hard-working, and darned good-hearted individual because of it.” The point is, when you write about the change you underwent, make sure that it is believable.

It sounds like a dangerous topic. You will be emphasizing negative aspects of yourself so you will need to show (not tell)) how you are different, and this could be tricky. You also imply that you were irresponsible and caused a car accident and this will be tought to ignore. Unless your essay is really great, I’d avoid it.

instead of telling and saying how this was the life changing experience write your essay more symbolically. show instead of telling. create images or scenes that are metaphors for your life. that is what separates the cream from the crop. and that is what will give your essay that special kick and eliminate it from the cliche essay pile.

Car accident essay.

689 words | 3 page(s)

Disbelief, helplessness, and fear engulfed my mind as I lay on my back. Surprisingly, I did not feel the pain because my body was numb everywhere. I felt like I had difficulty breathing and my mind was running with so many questions about what had just happened a few seconds ago on the road. From a distance, I could hear cars honking and making some noise but I don’t think they knew what had happened to me. The accident happened on the Shawnee Mission Road two years ago. At that time, I was an ALI student and all I needed to do that morning was get up early and attend class. Ever since the accident, I have been driving very carefully, especially along that particular street.

After the buzzing noise from my alarm woke me up, I jumped out of bed and made it to the shower. It was yet another morning and my normal routine had just begun. I must have slept a little bit longer than usual because it seems that my alarm was buzzing for quite some time. I quickly took a shower and got dressed for school. It was not until I got my cell phone from my bed that I realized that Chao, my friend, had sent me a text message. Our lecturer, Professor Phil, whose class is from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M., had told us to prepare for a quiz today, so Chao had texted to inform me of the same. When I checked my watch, it was thirty minutes past 8:00 and I was already very late since it takes thirty minutes to drive from home to school.

I swiftly got my car keys, ran out of my apartment, and drove off for school. Even the radio was giving me another reminder that it was thirty past eight. I started getting really worried at how late I was going to be for this quiz. As I started driving faster, I realized I forgot to fasten my seatbelt. I didn’t think anything of it and could not have possibly thought that anything could go more wrong so I didn’t buckle up as I thought it would have made me even more late for school. As I drove, I received a massage from my girlfriend who is in China who often wakes me up in the morning and to check on me. I decided to respond back to her to let her know I was getting late for school. I picked up my phone to text back and then bang!! I crashed into a car that was waiting for the traffic signal in front of me. In that moment, my body had severely hit the steering wheel during the impact of the crash. I started shaking as my body was in shock and after trying to realize what just happened.

I lay numb on the back until my mind could grasp what had happened. I had just smashed my car into another car. As much pain as I was in, I wanted see if anyone else got hurt but my body was so numb that I could not move. I looked around and saw a car parked beside me. There were two black men that were laughing at me and said, “Wow, it’s a Cadillac.”

“Hello Yunsong?” a voice woke me up after being unconscious for a while. I was lying in a bed in the hospital. It was my friend who had come to the hospital after he had been told of my accident. I spent one day in the hospital, and then I was released to go home in a wheelchair, a wheelchair where I would be bound to for about a month.

The accident has undoubtedly made me realize how precious life is. It was a narrow escape from death and it is something that has made me very cautious on the road. It’s taught me that one careless mistake could cost me my life. I have vowed to always wear a seatbelt, slow down on the road, and more importantly, not to text and drive.

What we know about the 4 Idaho college students found dead in an off-campus home

MOSCOW, Idaho — The killings of four University of Idaho students Sunday elicited shock and sadness on campus, in the college city of Moscow, Idaho, and beyond.

The victims were Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen, who became fast friends in the 6th grade; Ethan Chapin, a triplet from Washington state known for his love of sports and his sense of humor; and Xana Kernodle, a marketing major whose family recalled her positive and light-hearted personality.

The four were found slain at a home off-campus. A suspect has not been arrested. Moscow police said they don't believe there is an ongoing threat, and that “evidence indicates that this was a targeted attack.”

Goncalves, Mogen and Kernodle lived together at the home, according to Ellie McKnight, their neighbor and a friend of Chapin's at the University of Idaho.

Here is what we know about the victims:

Kaylee Goncalves, 21

Kaylee Goncalves, of Rathdrum, a city close to Coeur d’Alene, was “the ultimate go-getter,” her sister, Alivea Goncalves, told NBC’s “TODAY” in an interview.

She was a senior majoring in general studies in the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences, and was in the Alpha Phi sorority, the university has said.

Goncalves and Mogen had been friends since middle school, and members of both families treated them as one of their own. The Goncalves’ took Mogen with them on cruises, and vice versa.

“We’re all sisters — and Kaylee and Maddie were, especially,” Alivea Goncalves said.

“They did everything together,” Alivea Goncalves, said. “They fought like sisters, they loved like sisters, they shared clothes and fought over the clothes they shared like sisters.”

Kaylee Goncalves had recently bought a 2016 Range Rover, she planned a trip to Europe for next year, and planned to move, probably to Texas, also next year, her sister said.

“She had everything going for her, absolutely everything,” her sister said. “She had her job lined up. She had worked really hard for it, she just bought a new car, she had trips planned.”

Madison Mogen, 21

Mogen, of Coeur d’Alene, was a senior majoring in marketing and was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority, the university said.

“I wouldn’t have wanted anyone else to be the main character in all my childhood stories,” Kaylee Goncalves wrote on Instagram in May to wish her Maddie a happy 21st birthday. A slideshow showed them grow up from young girls to the college students they were.

"I love you more than life! My best friend forever and more," Mogen replied, with a heart emoji.

Mogen planned to move to Boise after graduating this spring, family friend Jessie Frost told the Idaho Statesman newspaper .

Mogen also worked with Kernodle at a restaurant, and Mogen helped run the business’ social media pages, the newspaper reported. The restaurant, the Mad Greek, posted on Facebook that the two women "brought so much joy to our restaurant and all of those they encountered."

Ethan Chapin, 20

Chapin was a freshman from Mount Vernon, Washington, a city in Skagit County north of Seattle.

He majored in recreation, sport and tourism management, and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity, according to the University of Idaho.

Chapin had just turned 20, and was a triplet, his parents, Stacy and Jim Chapin, told NBC affiliate KING of Seattle .

“Everything we do, is all of us, together,” Stacy Chapin told the station. “We’re a pretty tight family.”

Chapin and his siblings were athletic, and among the sports he played was club soccer for years, his parents said. He was funny and loved country music, they said. "He literally lit up every room," his mother told KING.

He also was in a relationship with Kernodle, and the two had been dating since the spring, McKnight said.

In an Oct. 29 Instagram post, Kernodle wished Chapin a happy birthday and said life was "so much better with you in it."

Xana Kernodle, 20

Kernodle, of Post Falls, Idaho, was a junior majoring in marketing, and she was also in Pi Beta Phi sorority, the university said.

“I am lucky to have had her as a sister,” her sister, Jazzmin Kernodle, said in a statement.

Jazzmin Kernodle recalled her sister as someone who was so positive and light-hearted she "always lifted up a room." The family is at a loss for words, and are waiting to find out more from the investigation.

“Our hearts go out to Kaylee, Maddie and Ethan and all their families as well. They were all amazing people, and were loved so much,” she said. “My sister was so lucky to have them in her life.”

Tim Stelloh reported from Moscow, and Phil Helsel from Los Angeles.

Porsche-driving Indian teenager who killed two people ordered to write essay

A n Indian court granted bail to a drink-driving teenager who rammed his Porsche into a motorbike and killed two people, on the condition that he “write an essay” about the incident.

The court also told the 17-year-old boy from Pune in the western state of Maharashtra to undergo treatment for his drinking habit, take counselling sessions and work with the local police for 15 days.

The teenager, who has not been named, is the son of a prominent real estate magnate, and the perceived leniency shown by the judge has sparked outrage in the country .

The accident occurred at around 3.15am in Kalyani Nagar in Pune on Sunday.

A group of friends was returning home on motorbikes after a party at a local restaurant. When they reached the Kalyani Nagar junction, one of their motorcycles was hit by the teenager’s Porsche, police say, causing its two riders to fall and die instantly.

After hitting the riders, the teenager crashed his car into some railings, police say.

A video that has been widely shared on social media shows a group of passersby attacking the driver as he tries to exit the vehicle.

The deceased were identified as software engineers Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, both 25.

A case was registered against the driver at a local police station and he was charged with rash driving, causing death by rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide and endangering life or personal safety of a person.

The accused is reportedly four months shy of 18, the minimum legal age to drive a car in India .

He was reportedly out celebrating his Class 12 exam results.

He was driving at 200 kmh when he collided with the motorcycle.

The boy’s lawyer, Prashant Patil said: “The juvenile accused who was arrested by Pune Police has been granted bail by the Juvenile Justice Board on certain conditions, including that the accused should work with the traffic police of Yerawada for 15 days, accused should write an essay on accident, should get treatment from the concerned doctor to help him quit drinking and should take psychiatric counselling and submit the report.”

Police said they will appeal the bail order and treat the accused as an adult.

“We will not leave any stone unturned to prove that this is a heinous crime,” Pune’s police chief, Amitesh Kumar, told India Today .

Police have also arrested the boy’s father and owners of the two bars that allegedly served him alcohol.

The legal drinking age in Maharashtra is 25.

“We’re in shock,” Jugal Kishor Koshta, an uncle of one of the victims, told NDTV. “It’s condemnable that he should get bail in 15 hours. He and his parents should be investigated. We will discuss the matter once Ashwini’s last rites are over tomorrow.”

“We want his bail cancelled and he should remain in police custody. Because of him, an innocent girl, who has seen nothing of life, died," Sachin Bokde, another uncle of the victim, said.

Sanjay Raut, a prominent member of the opposition party Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, accused Pune police of serving pizza and burgers to the accused teenager after the crash, India Today reported.

“Police commissioner should be suspended. He tried to protect the accused. A young couple was killed and the accused was granted bail within two hours,” he told the ANI news agency.

“In the video, it can be seen that he was drunk, but his medical report was negative. Who is helping the accused? Who is this police commissioner? He should be removed or the people of Pune will come on the streets.”

Never-before-seen photos and details about the man accused of murdering four Idaho college students

By Peter Van Sant

January 7, 2023 / 11:02 PM EST / CBS News

Under a dark Idaho sky, investigators flew Bryan Kohberger to the college town of Moscow. Police delivered him to the Latah County Jail. On Jan. 5, in an orange jumpsuit, his face vacant, the 28-year-old made what will likely be his first of many appearances in this court.

Four Dead University of Idaho

He stands charged with the murder of four students from the University of Idaho: Kaylee Goncalves, Madison "Maddie" Mogen, Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle. Investigators say he stabbed them to death in the home the women shared.

JUDGE: The maximum penalty for this offense, if you plead guilty or be found guilty is up to death and imprisonment for life. Do you understand?

BRYAN KOHBERGER: Yes.

Kohberger has not yet entered a plea.

In an affidavit , investigators laid out their understanding of the grim details about the night of the killings: They say the killer left his DNA on a "leather knife sheath" found on a bed next to Maddie Mogen. And, most hauntingly, they say a surviving roommate thought she heard crying and "saw a figure clad in black clothing and a mask."

The man walked past, as she stood in "frozen shock." She locked herself in her room.

The investigation is fast-moving. Authorities have not disclosed a motive or if he had a connection to the students, but we are learning more about just who Bryan Kohberger is.

WHO IS ACCUSED KILLER BRYAN KOHBERGER?

Just 15 days before his arrest, Bryan Kohberger and his father were driving home from Washington State University for winter break to the family's home in Pennsylvania.

OFFICER (body cam video): Hello MICHAEL KOHBERGER: How you doing? OFFICER: How ya'll doin today?

The journey interrupted by two traffic stops, almost 10 minutes apart, in Indiana for tailgating.

idaho-12.jpg

MICHAEL KOHBERGER (to officer): We're gonna be going to Pennsylvania, a couple more miles. OFFICER: Oh, OK. MICHAEL KOHBERGER: …to the Pocono Mountains. We're a little, we're slightly punchy. We've been driving for hours.

Police body cam video shows Kohberger and his father talking calmly with an officer about the trip.

OFFICER: Hours? And days? BRYAN KOHBERGER: Hours. MICHAEL KOHBERGER: Hours. Well, we've been driving for almost a day. OFFICER: Do me a favor and don't follow too close, OK?

Then they are released with a warning.

Kohberger had been at the university since August, studying to get his Ph.D. in criminology. He was also a teaching assistant in the Department of Criminal Justice. He lived in an apartment complex on campus and had an office there.

According to the newly released affidavit, Kohberger had applied for an internship with the Pullman Police Department in the fall. He wrote in his application essay that "he had interest in assisting rural law enforcement agencies with how to better collect and analyze technological data."

Benjamin Roberts took four classes with Kohberger.

Benjamin Roberts : He seemed very comfortable around other people. He was very quick to offer his opinion and thoughts. And he was always participating fairly eagerly in classroom discussions.

Bryan Kohberger

He says Kohberger appeared highly intelligent.

Peter Van Sant : Does anything else come to mind that Bryan said to you in the past that today you think might be of interest?

Benjamin Roberts : There was a comment that he made, and it was kind of a flippant guy talk thing. At one point, he just idly mentioned, you know, "I can go down to a bar or a club and pretty much have any lady I want."

Kohberger arrived at the university after earning his bachelor's in psychology and master's degree in criminal justice at DeSales University in Center Valley, Pennsylvania.

While at DeSales, authorities say Bryan Kohberger posted this survey, approved by the university, on the website Reddit asking ex-cons about the crimes they committed. One question he asked: "Before making your move, how did you approach the victim or target?

James Gagliano : This could be a piece of circumstantial evidence.

James Gagliano is a retired FBI Supervisory Special Agent and CBS News consultant.

James Gagliano: The fact that the suspect was interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in criminal justice and was especially interested in … the mental state that people who had committed murders in the past … yes, it could be interesting to note. But I know a lot of researchers that study those things, too, that would never commit a quadruple homicide.

And if Kohberger was involved in these murders, genetic genealogist CeCe Moore questions why he would be so careless as to allegedly leave his DNA at the crime scene.

CeCe Moore : People are talking about how smart he supposedly is. And I just can't see how that could be true, because any student of forensic science or criminology would have to know that it's virtually impossible not to leave your DNA behind at a very violent, intimate crime scene like this.

CeCe Moore : You know, Ted Bundy thought he was smart. But he wasn't that smart, as it turns out.

After the murders, Roberts says Kohberger appeared disheveled, tired and chattier than usual.

But nothing could prepare Roberts for what he learned o f Kohberger's arrest.

Benjamin Roberts : Looking back over the last four months, I feel like there should have been signs that I should have seen. And I didn't ... I was blindsided.

Jason LaBar : This is out of character for Bryan, these allegations.

Monroe County public defender Jason LaBar represented Kohberger before he was extradited to Idaho.

Jason LaBar : The family would want the general public to know that Bryan is a caring son and brother —that's he's responsible, that he is devoted to them.

In a statement the family said, "we care deeply for the for the four families who have lost their precious children" ... and that they "seek the truth and promote his presumption of innocence rather than judge unknown facts and make erroneous assumptions."

Jason LaBar : He is innocent until proven otherwise.

LaBar says Kohberger came from a close-knit family. He grew up in eastern Pennsylvania in the Pocono Mountains. His father was as a maintenance worker and his mom worked in the school system. Bryan has two older sisters – one who works as a family therapist, and another sister who appeared in a 2011 low budget slasher film, "Two Days Back," about a group of young students viciously murdered by a serial killer. She now works as a school counselor.

Bree : My heart goes out to Bryan's family.

kohberger-skype.jpg

Kohberger's friend, Bree, says she met Bryan at a party when they attended Pleasant Valley High School. She asked "48 Hours" not to use her last name.

Bree : Bryan was really funny. He wasn't outgoing at all. But he also wasn't shy.

Bree and Bryan Kohberger

She says they bonded over their love of the outdoors.

Bree : I don't necessarily remember the conversations, but you definitely remember how someone makes you feel. … I just remember feeling OK — I was just with a friend. … Just felt natural.

Bryan Kohberger

Bree recalls Kohberger was an average student with only a few close friends. In a yearbook photo, Kohberger's caption said he aspired to be an Army Ranger.

Casey Artnz also knew Kohberger from high school . She posted this Tik Tok following Bryan's arrest.

CASEY ARNTZ TIK TOK: "I used to be friends with Bryan Kohberger" ... "I'm in actual shock right now."

Casey Arntz : He was an overweight kid. … So, he did get bullied a lot.

Bryan Kohberger in high school

But Arntz says people saw a change in Kohberger the beginning of senior year.

Casey Arntz : He lost like 100 pounds . … He was a rail. … It was after that weight loss that a lot of people noticed a huge switch in him.

Casey Arntz : My brother has since come out to say that even though they were friends, Bryan bullied him.

Casey Arntz : He had said that he would put him in like a chokeholds and stuff like that.

Bree says Kohberger started using heroin, which ended their friendship.

Bree : You just saw him becoming more self-destructive. … He really stayed secluded.

It's unclear when exactly Kohberger went into recovery, but both Bree and Casey say years after he graduated high school it appeared as if he was getting his life together. He was going to Northampton Community College and working security for Pleasant Valley School District.

Bree : He was telling me that he wanted to get sober, that he was getting sober. … And he wanted to let me know like, "I'm gonna do better. I'm gonna be better."

Bree : I'm sorry ... (emotional)

Bryan Kohberger

Casey Arntz : The last time I saw Bryan was in 2017 at one of my friend's wedding. … And I gave him a hug and I said, "You look so good. Like I'm so proud of you."

And both Bree and Casey say it appeared that Kohberger had a new focus — his studies in criminology.

Bree : He wanted to do something that impacted people in a good way.

Bree: People were not his strong suit. And think through his criminology studies, he was really trying to understand humans and to try and understand himself.

Now Bree, like many who knew him, struggles to connect the person they once knew to this unspeakable crime.

Bree : I think a lot of people who were close to him are feeling this massive amount of guilt … "Why didn't I see it? Did I miss something? … Where did it go wrong?

THE YOUNG LIVES LOST

Before it was a crime scene, it was a home to five close friends. Maybe none closer than Maddie Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves.

On TikTok, the 21-year-old seniors looked like they were enjoying their final school year.

In the early morning of November 13, the two friends headed to a food truck. But their seemingly carefree existence would come to an abrupt end just hours later. Kaylee and Maddie were stabbed to death in the upstairs part of the house. A hundred miles away in northern Idaho, Kaylee's father Steve got the news.

Peter Van Sant : Steve, give us a sense of the shock of that moment.

Steve Goncalves : You just feel like you're getting crushed by a thousand pounds of weight.

idaho-kaylee-goncalves.jpg

Peter Van Sant : What do you want the world to know about your daughter, Kaylee?

Steve Goncalves : I want the world to know, they — they got robbed. Somebody stole from you.

Steve Goncalves says his daughter Kaylee would have made the world a better place. A general studies major, she was the middle child of five siblings. Goncalves says Kaylee was always up for a challenge.

Steve Goncalves : She grew up around two boys that were, you know, older than her. And uh, she didn't see any reason why she couldn't be as quick and fast and as good as those two boys were.

Peter Van Sant : What did she want to do with her life?

Steve Goncalves : Like most young people, it changed. She was gonna be a teacher. … But once she found out how long it was gonna take to pay back her student loans, she — she said, "Dad, you know, this thing that you do with computers seems to work pretty well."

idaho-maddie-kaylee.jpg

She reportedly had a job lined up in Austin but made it clear that one day she hoped to settle down somewhere near her dearest friend Maddie Mogen. Maddie was a marketing major, and she and Kaylee had been inseparable since the sixth grade.

Steve Goncalves : I just felt like it was more of a sistership than it was a friendship ... And she was just one of our kids.

So, it perhaps did not come as a surprise when Steve revealed at a November memorial that Kaylee and Maddie died side-by-side.

STEVE GONCALVES (memorial service): They went to high school together. … They came here together. … And in the end, they died together. In the same room, in the same bed. It comforts us. It lets us know that they were with their best friends in the whole world.

It was a belief Maddie's stepfather, Scott Laramie, repeated to another packed memorial just days later.

SCOTT LARAMIE (memorial service): The two of 'em were a force to be reckoned with. They stuck together through everything.

Madison Mogen, 21,

Maddie had a boyfriend, Jake Schriger.

JAKE SCHRIGER (memorial service): She was the first person I talked to every morning and the last person I talked to before bed.

They had been together for more than a year. Schriger says Maddie had a talent for making people laugh.

JAKE SCHRIGER (memorial service): She was really funny. Her jokes really would come outta nowhere … And just be like, "Is that the — the cute little blonde girl that just said that?"

But Maddie and Kaylee weren't the only victims. While two other roommates were in their rooms and unharmed during the attacks, on the second floor, the killer made his way to the room of Xana Kernodle.

JAZZMIN KERNODLE (memorial service): She was my baby sister, but she was so much wiser.

Xana's sister, Jazzmin.

JAZZMIN KERNODLE (memorial service): She would always tell me she wouldn't know what to do without me. And now I have to live this life without her.

Xana Kernodle

A 20-year-old junior majoring in marketing, Xana was known for being focused on her studies. So focused, she didn't make much time for dating.

JAZZMIN KERNODLE (memorial service): Xana never had a boyfriend before, and my dad and I wondered if she was ever gonna get one (laughs).

That was until she met Ethan Chapin.

JAZZMIN KERNODLE (memorial service): The way she would talk and smile about him was something I've never seen her do before.

Ethan was a 20-year-old majoring in recreation and tourism management. Jazzmin says Xana and Ethan began dating in the spring of 2022.

JAZZMIN KERNODLE (memorial service): They had something so special and everyone around them knew.

idaho-xana-kernodle-ethan-chapin.jpg

Especially anyone who followed the pair on Instagram. For Ethan's birthday, Xana posted photos of them with the caption: "Life is so much better with you in it, love you!" It would be her last Instagram post. Just two weeks later, the young couple was found stabbed to death in Xana's bedroom.

At the University of Idaho, the pain of this tragedy is felt at the root and extends hundreds of miles away to a tulip farm in Skagit Valley, Washington. It's where Ethan worked before heading to college. His boss, Andrew Miller.

Andrew Miller : So, Ethan started – it was in the spring of — of '21. … It was the best Tulip Festival.

Miller says the annual tulip festival attracts close to half-a-million visitors, and Ethan stood out in the crowd.

Andrew Miller : Well, he's a big guy wearin' a big smile, right? I think that's the part that I – that kinda struck me right away.

Ethan Chapin

Ethan – a triplet – worked there with his siblings, Maizie and Hunter, and lived in a rented house on the farm with their parents. The Chapin triplets were incredibly close says Reese Gardner.

Reese Gardner : They were best friends. … If one did something, they all did something. … It was pretty cool to see.

Including attending the University of Idaho together.

Andrew Miller : And that was the funniest thing, it was like, of course it was a package deal. Like, all three of 'em were gonna go there.

Ariah Macagba : He was excited, I think, 'cause his siblings were going with him.

Ariah Macagba says Ethan's parents had decided to live in Idaho, too. Macagba says when she heard Ethan had been murdered, she couldn't believe it.

Ariah Macagba : I think the first thing I did was message Ethan. I was like, "Hey, you're OK, right? Like, this isn't real." (crying) And — obviously, he didn't respond.

Reese Gardner scoured the internet for information.

Reese Gardner : And I just couldn't stop reading articles and … I just wanted to know what happened, and I wanted to know why.

But in lieu of answers, Gardner turned to tulips. He had an idea: name one after Ethan.

Reese Gardner : I thought, "There's — there's no better way … to remember someone who had such a big part, a big role in those farms."

Andrew Miller : Cause Reese called me … And it was, "Hey, can this be done, and are you interested in doing it?" And I was, "Yes, and hell yes."

But creating a new tulip is a long process, so instead, Miller suggested a mix of tulips that would be a perfect tribute to Ethan: yellow and white.

Andrew Miller : Yellow, of course, because Go Vandals. University of Idaho, right? That's significant. And then white is — is an eternal color, right? And tulips come up in the spring. It is a symbol of — of hope.

Ethan's Smile tulips

With his parents' blessing, they named the mix of tulips, "Ethan's Smile."

Andrew Miller : So, this will be a nice yellow or white tulip here in about four months.

The trio planted thousands of bulbs in the state of Washington and sent a couple thousand more to the University of Idaho.

Andrew Miller : And it really is our hope that we'll be able to continue to plant and that anybody that wants to remember him will be able to have their own Ethan's — Ethan's Smile Garden. … It's a living legacy.

Now it is up to prosecutors to get justice for these young victims .

IN SEARCH OF ANSWERS

Forty-seven days after the murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Madison Mogen, and Xana Kernodle, authorities apprehended the man they believed was responsible. We now know investigators had Bryan Kohberger in their sights early on but kept it close to the vest. So, in the early days, after the Nov. 13 murders, frustration swept over Moscow, Idaho.

James Gagliano : I think in this instance people were expecting a pretty quick arrest in this case, and it takes time.

Kaylee and Steve Goncalves

Steve Goncalves, father of 21-year-old Kaylee, was trying as best he could to deal with news no one expects.

Steve Goncalves : Most things I'm prepared for. Most things as a dad, you can— you can handle. But somethin' like that, you just can't prepare for and you can't fix it.

Steve Goncalves : And, you know, just think if you do everything right, by the book, somethin' like this couldn't happen.

Peter Van Sant : Did you have any sense who might have done something like this?

Steve Goncalves : No … I didn't think anybody in her inner circles was — was capable of interacting and — and her doing something that could even deserve something like that.

As news spread of the murders, so did shock in the college community, which had not seen a homicide since 2015.

Matt Loveless : Parents drove hundreds of miles to pick up their kids to head home and stay home for the semester.

Matt Loveless is a journalism professor at nearby Washington State University.

Matt Loveless : At this point, we don't know if they're gonna come back for — the spring semester there on campus. And that same thing happened in both our communities.

James Gagliano: And, so, when parents send their kids off to school, for something to happen like this, I think it's a parent's worst nightmare

James Gagliano : And it's a place, Moscow, Idaho, where violent crime really is not an issue.

As police started their investigation, they traced the victims' final steps. The day before the murders seemed to start ordinarily. Kaylee Goncalves posted photos with her roommates and Ethan Chapin, to her Instagram account with the caption, "One lucky girl to be surrounded by these ppl everyday." That evening, Ethan and Xana attended a party at a fraternity house on campus. Kaylee and Madison were at a bar between 10 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. They were then seen at a local food vendor, the "Grub Truck." It is believed they all returned home by about 2 a.m. on Nov. 13.

James Gagliano : So, in examining the timeline , police know that the crime took place sometime in the early morning hours. There were also two other University of Idaho students who were inside the house when the murders took place.

Idaho student murders crime scene

It was later that morning that a call was made to 911 from one of the surviving roommate's phones to report an unconscious person. Police arrived at the house at 11:58 a.m.

James Gagliano : Police find the victims on the second and third floor of the house in bedrooms — a horrific and a very large-scale crime scene 'cause you're gonna be dealing with a number of different floors that need to be processed, the bedrooms where the crimes actually occurred, and then ingress and egress points. How did the — how did the alleged killer get inside the house? Through a front door? Through a window? Those are all things police will be looking at.

CHIEF JAMES FRY (to reporters): No weapon has been located at this time. There was no sign of forced entry into the residence.

On Nov. 16, three days after the murders, the Moscow Police held their first press conference.

CHIEF JAMES FRY (to reporters): We believe this was an isolated, targeted attack on our victims. We do not have a suspect at this time and that individual is still out there.

Coroner Cathy Mabbutt issued her report on Nov. 17.

Coroner Cathy Mabbutt: They were all murdered through stabbing with some kind of a, probably a larger knife…

She told police some of the four victims had defensive wounds, but none had signs of sexual assault. Police continued to work the case, aided by the Idaho State Police and the FBI.

James Gagliano : I just believe that the Moscow Police Department probably just didn't have a lot of experience in working a homicide, especially one as heinous as this one.

After about three weeks with no arrests, and what, to the public, appeared to be no real suspects, Steve Goncalves grew more concerned that authorities weren't doing enough and that the murders would turn into a cold case. So, he says, he started working with his own team to investigate the murders.

Steve Goncalves : So, we just thought, "This is the time. Let's get it out there, and let's not let it get cold. Let's get as many resources as— as possible."

Peter Van Sant : And did you have any sense whatsoever as to what a motive … might have been for these murders?

Steve Goncalves : Pretty girls and a handsome guy. I thought, you know, that might be somethin' to do with their, you know, stalking them in the sense of that.

Meanwhile, names of possible people of interest were trickling out — including members of the community and acquaintances of the victims. But they all seemed to be part of an unfounded rumor mill, many from online sleuths. Goncalves even had people come to him to prove they were not involved.

Steve Goncalves : We — had certain suspects take their shirts off in our kitchen to show if they had scratches. And we tried to do everything in — in our powers to make sure that if we thought somebody was ruled out, we truly — we truly felt like, you know, we — we looked at 'em.

Idaho murder victims

Law enforcement would end up receiving thousands of tips, but the investigation, by outward appearances, seemed to be stalled. Nearly a month after the murders, on Dec. 7, police were seen packing up the victims' belongings to return to the families, who had lost so much. It was the police chief behind the wheel of the U-Haul truck. That same day, a plea was made to the public.

Police were interested in speaking with the occupant(s) of a white 2011-2013 Hyundai Elantra with an unknown license plate, spotted near the crime scene, around the time of the killings.

AMANDA ROLEY | KREM REPORTER: Today's update is the first descriptive tip that we have received in several days. Detectives now want to speak with anyone who was inside a white Hyundai Elantra that was near this home on King Road around Nov. 13th.

Police released photos of similar makes to the vehicle they were looking for.

CHIEF JAMES FRY (to reporters): We still believe there is more information to be gathered.

James Gagliano : Pushing that out to the media. Pushing that out to people on the internet. Pushing that out so that people can look for either a potential suspect, person of interest, or a potential vehicle. That goes a long way towards running down leads.

INSIDE THE INVESTIGATION

It turns out that about two weeks before the police asked the public to be on the lookout for a white Hyundai Elantra , they had already shared that information with surrounding law enforcement. And on Nov. 29, 2022, a white Elantra was located by Washington State University Police. The car was registered to Bryan Kohberger.

CBS News learned, that in mid-December, the Hyundai Elantra was tracked for several days by the FBI, using E-ZPass monitoring, fixed wing aircraft and ground support, as it was driven by Kohberger, along with his father, from Pullman, Washington, on that cross-country trip to the family's home in Pennsylvania.

On Dec. 15, the car was stopped twice in Indiana for those driving violations, by the Indiana State Police and the Hancock Sheriff's Office.

OFFICER: So, you're coming from Washington State University? MICHAEL KOHBERGER: Yeah. BRYAN KOHBERGER: Yup OFFICER: And you're going where? MICHAEL KOHBERGER: We're gonna be going to Pennsylvania.

Both agencies said at the time of the stops, "there was no information available on a suspect for the crime in Idaho, to include identifying information or any specific information related to the license plate state or number of the white Hyundai Elantra …"

Police did not ticket Kohberger; they gave a verbal warning and the trip continued home. And then, Kohberger's holiday came to an abrupt halt .

CBS NEWS REPORT: A suspect is under arrest for the quadruple murder of four Idaho college students.

Bryan Kohberger

On Dec. 30, 2022, police made that announcement that Bryan Kohberger was under arrest for the murders. He was arrested at his family's home in Albrightsville, Pa., at 3 a.m., with approximately 50 law enforcement officers on the scene.

MAJ. CHRISTOPHER PARIS | PENNSYLVANIA STATE POLICE: There were multiple windows that were broken I believe to gain access, as well as multiple doors.

Authorities believe Bryan Kohberger acted alone.

Jason LaBar : Bryan was very shocked by his arrest. … Bryan did not know why they were there, but he was aware of the case in Idaho.

Monroe County public defender Jason LaBar represented Kohberger in Pennsylvania as he was awaiting extradition to Idaho.

Jason LaBar : Bryan indicated to me that he was eager to be exonerated — that he was willing to go back to Idaho.

On Jan. 3, at a hearing in Pennsylvania, Kohberger signed his waiver of extradition. And on Jan. 4, was flown to Idaho, where he is in jail, charged with the four murders.

Four Dead University of Idaho

On Jan. 5, Kohberger appeared in court in Moscow with his new public defender to hear the charges read against him. He has yet to enter a plea.

JUDGE MEGAN MARSHALL: The maximum penalty for this offense if you were to plead guilty or be found guilty is death or imprisonment for life. Do you understand?

BRYAN KOHBERGER: Yes.

That same day, that affidavit was released that laid out startling new details about the murder investigation. According to the affidavit, one of the surviving roommates actually saw the murderer and stood in a "frozen shock phase." She is referred to as DM in the affidavit, and told police that earlier, she heard a female voice say, 'something to the effect of "there's someone here." And later, a male voice say, "something to the effect of "it's ok, I'm going to help you." Later she opened her door "… after she heard crying and saw a figure clad in black clothing and a mask..." She described the figure as "5'10'… with bushy eyebrows."

The affidavit states that, according to DM, the male walked toward the back sliding door and DM locked herself in her room. It was later in the morning when that call was made to 911 from one of the surviving roommate's phones, to report an unconscious person. It is unclear what occurred in the hours before police were called. It is believed the murders took place between 4 and 4:25 a.m. Police say they discovered, on the bed in Madison's room, a knife sheath with a Marine insignia.

James Gagliano : I would imagine that a — crime scene as — as grisly and ghastly as this one — that there would have been … DNA left by the perpetrator.

Idaho murders house

According to the affidavit, the knife sheath was processed and "the Idaho State Lab later located a single source of male DNA on the button snap." They were able to link it to DNA recovered from the trash at the Pennsylvania Kohberger family home.

It is not clear, what, if any, connection Kohberger had with the victims. However, the affidavit states that by using cellular phone data, police were able to place Kohberger's cell phone near the crime scene "on at least twelve occasions before November 13, 2022. All of those occasions, except for one, occurred in the late evening and early morning hours …"

Even with these new details, many question remain. A newly issued gag order prohibits officials and others involved in the case from speaking about the murders. Also, authorities have sealed a search warrant that was carried out at Kohberger's home in Pullman, Washington.

Jim Gagliano : This is one where you don't want a mistake. You don't want something to happen during this process that's going to give the alleged suspect an opportunity to beat the case.

Now, the case will work its way through the court system as parents, who lost their children, will be looking for answers.

Steve Goncalves : We find the truth, you know. You get the truth, and then that — that'll — that'll be everything.

IN REMEMBRANCE

You can see it in the stunned, silent faces of the kids. Faces that ask "why?" without even speaking.

Idaho candlelight vigil

Young eyes glisten, bathed in the glow of candlelight at a vigil held for the young lives lost. A ritual all too familiar across America. The flowers, the prayers, the vows to carry on. In Idaho, they hold on tight to each other and to the memories of those loved and lost.

EMILY (memorial service): Life is so unfair and unpredictable (crying).

For Xana Kernodle's friend Emily, the wound remains raw.

EMILY (memorial service): And it tears me apart knowing I can't hug her. (Crying) So hold those you love closer. Hug them a little tighter and tell 'em you love them. We'll find justice for you, Ethan, Maddie, and Kaylee. We love you all so much.

And for Ashlin, Maddie Mogen's memory is still vibrant.

ASHLIN (memorial service): You truly will live on forever -- not only in my heart, but in the heart of so many people that were impacted by your beautiful smile, your grace, your patience, your open heart, and your craziness.

Idaho murder victim

Hunter Johnson remembers a pal he could rely on — Ethan Chapin.

HUNTER JOHNSON (memorial service): Ethan was always someone you could count on to make you smile and — cheer up your mood. … And I — feel so lucky to have shared so many great memories with him (emotional).

But those who are older perhaps sense that pain that runs this deep, never goes away. Kaylee's father, Steve Goncalves.

Steve Goncalves : You don't heal from somethin' like this. … it's never gonna happen. You're never gonna be healed. You're never gonna get through this. And when they die, part of you dies.

Steve Goncalves : We're tired of all these types of crimes. We're tired of all this stuff. And — we can rally around these terrible tragedies, and … We're hopin' that as a society we come back stronger. And we — we decide to not let this be accepted anymore, you know. That's what I hope for.

Bryan Kohberger's next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 12.

He will have a chance to enter a plea at a later date.

Pune Porsche car crash: As fake video of teen goes viral, mother appeals to cops to protect him

Pune Porsche car crash: As fake video of teen goes viral, mother appeals to cops to protect him

The mother of the 17-year-old boy who allegedly fatally knocked down two persons with his high-end car has appealed to the police to “protect” her son after a video purportedly featuring him, boasting about how he got away with the accident, went viral.

In a video message, the teen's mother stressed that the clip had nothing to do with her son and that it was fake.

“The video which is being circulated is not of my son. That is a fake video. My son is in the detention centre,” says the teen's mother in her message.

Appealing to the police to “protect” her son, the mother breaks down, shows her video message. Unable to gather herself, she then walks away from the camera.

A rap song purportedly featuring the teenager, boasting about how he got away with the car crash , went viral on social media, but Pune police have clarified that it was a fake account and that the teenager had no role in the video.

Later, it was found that the rap video was of a social media influencer.

A Porsche , allegedly driven by the 17-year-old, who the police claim was drunk at the time, fatally knocked down two motorbike-borne software engineers in the city in the early hours of Sunday.

The teenager was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) which granted him bail while asking him to write a 300-word essay.

Following an outcry over quick bail and the police's review plea, the JJB on Wednesday remanded the teen, son of real estate developer Vishal Agarwal, to the observation home till June 5.

The police have also arrested the teenager's father in connection with the case.

Interim dean gains permanent role at Washburn University’s College of Arts and Sciences

Dr. Kelly Erby, interim dean of Washburn University's College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), will...

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - An interim dean gained a permanent role at Washburn University’s College of Arts and Sciences.

According to Washburn University officials, Dr. Kelly Erby , interim dean of the university’s College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), will assume the role permanently. The selection follows a highly competitive national search and takes effect immediately.

“Washburn was fortunate to have a large number of exceptional applicants for the position. In the end, Dr. Erby’s commitment to students, her record of success and a true love of Washburn made her the ideal person for the role,” said Dr. JuliAnn Mazachek , president, Washburn University.

Washburn University officials indicated Erby began serving as interim dean of CAS June 1, 2023. During the past year, she has led several faculty, curricular and teaching initiatives including the creation of the Bachelor of General Studies degree which is designed to encourage students to complete a four-year degree at Washburn. Thousands of students in Shawnee County and across the state started college but were forced to stop because of finances and complicated life circumstances. This program has been created with them in mind.

“It is evident through initiatives such as the Bachelor of General Studies that Dr. Erby is an innovative leader who continues to look for new ways to provide academic programs and pathways that best fit the needs of students and our communities,” said Dr. John Fritch, provost and vice president for academic affairs, Washburn University.

Washburn University officials said Erby earned a bachelor’s degree in history and English from Ohio State University and her master’s and doctorate in history from Emory University . She joined Washburn in 2011 as an assistant professor in history, received tenure in 2017 and was promoted to full professor in 2021. During her most recent years at Washburn, Erby served as an assistant or associate dean of CAS. Her book “Restaurant Republic: The Rise of Public Dining in Boston” was published by the University of Minnesota Press in 2016.

“I am thrilled to lead the College of Arts and Sciences at Washburn University. For more than 13 years, Washburn has been my home and passion, and I am deeply committed to our mission of expanding access to higher education,” Erby said. “I am especially passionate about the arts and sciences, which empower students by cultivating critical thinking, effective communication and creativity. These disciplines offer a comprehensive understanding of the world, preparing individuals to thrive in a rapidly changing society.”

Washburn University officials noted Erby replaces Dr. Laura Stephenson who served for many years as CAS dean before stepping into the role of interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at Washburn. Stephenson retires later this month.

2024 PGA Championship: Tournament worker identified as fatal car accident victim outside Valhalla

A man was hit by a shuttle bus in louisville in a fatal accident that delayed the second round of the pga championship.

louisville-police-usatsi.png

Round 2 of the 2024 PGA Championship was delayed Friday due to a fatal car accident involving a shuttle bus and a pedestrian outside of Valhalla Golf Club at 5:09 a.m. ET. The victim has since been identified as a tournament worker who was attempting to cross the road in front of the property.

"This morning we were devastated to learn that a worker with one of our vendors was tragically struck and killed by a shuttle bus outside Valhalla Golf Club," the PGA of America, which hosts the PGA Championship, said in a statement. "This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship. We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones."

"This morning, our city experienced a tragic accident that took the life of John Mills, a Louisvillian who will be greatly missed by his family and our community. Our focus is on this family who lost their loved one. I have spoken with members of Mr. Mills' family to convey our city's condolences," said Mayor Craig Greenberg in a statement. "... We remain focused on the tragic loss of life and will share more information on both of these matters as available."

Subsequent police presence and traffic outside the golf course caused play to be pushed back by 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Championship competitors like Will Zalatoris and Cameron Young elected to ditch their vehicles and walk to the golf course due to the logjam of traffic. Professional golfers such as PGA Championship participant Emiliano Grillo as well as Ian Poulter and Graeme McDowell have extended condolences to the family via social media posts.

Scottie Scheffler was among those aiming to arrive early at the golf course, though a traffic incident involving a police officer led to Scheffler being arrested outside Valhalla at 6 a.m. The world's No. 1 golfer and reigning Masters champion was released on his own recognizance nearly three hours later; he has since returned to the property to begin his second round at 10:08 a.m.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshar released a statement of his own later Friday.

"This morning an incident occurred outside the PGA Championship that resulted in the heartbreaking death of a fellow Kentuckian. Our hearts are broken, and we continue to pray for the victim's family. The events that occurred afterward are the unfortunate result of this tragic incident, and we are hopeful that all parties involved can come to a resolution."
