Master of Science Digital Media

Many industries use digital media, so getting a digital media graduate degree can be very beneficial. A digital media graduate program will allow you to work with various types of digital media, such as virtual and augmented reality and digital animation. It will also prompt you to acquire design skills and learn about digital media theory. Some programs expose students to gaming, user experience, and 3-D modeling concepts. Others discuss digital media management, history, ethics, and policy. If you are interested in a career in digital media, continue reading for information regarding the difficulty level, duration, requirements, and job opportunities connected to earning a graduate-level digital media degree.

You may find it moderately challenging to obtain a digital media graduate degree. Many masters in digital media grad programs require students to complete coursework, projects, theses, and internships. Some mandate that students submit a digital portfolio toward the end of the program. If you pursue a master's of digital media graduate program that stresses the need for a portfolio, you will document everything you do by taking pictures or collecting work samples. Film and Media Studies Program

The graduate program in film and media studies.

Inaugurated in 2002, Yale’s doctoral Program in Film and Media Studies quickly achieved the international stature it enjoys today. Building on a core faculty that had long overseen an impressive undergraduate major, the graduate program attracted incoming faculty who were eager to help shape it. The quality of the students who have applied has been superior, and the large majority of those selected have chosen to study here. Fifty students have completed, or are in the midst of, their degrees. Our alumni hold positions at a range of institutions, including universities with major graduate programs, and several have already seen their revised dissertations published as books by important presses. 

Graduate students have been able to produce such significant research thanks not least to Yale’s unparalleled resources.  Specialized librarians and curators keep our students in mind as they collect and make available the massive amounts of material held by the Sterling Memorial Library, the Haas library in the History of Art, and especially the Beinecke rare book library that houses the archives of hundreds of filmmakers, writers, and artists.  Two of America’s great art museums, The Yale University Art Gallery and the British Art Center (with buildings designed by Louis Kahn), retain a continuing relation with our graduate students.  As for primary material in our field,  the Yale Film Archive is home to a growing collection of 35mm and 16mm film prints, and is a member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF). The Archive also oversees a large circulating library of DVDs, Blu-rays, and VHS tapes.

A dedicated, expert projectionist oversees hundreds of screenings each year, mainly in two spaces (the auditorium of 250 in our building and a projection room holding 40 on York Street) that are equipped for 35mm, 16mm, and virtually all video formats. 4K and 2K projections are common.

Graduate students absorb and generate the energy and enthusiasm so important to dynamic film scholarship thanks to the bustling intellectual climate at the Humanities Quadrangle, where faculty and students meet continually—almost daily it seems—around screenings, lectures, conferences and workshops, some initiated by the graduate students themselves. 

By design the doctorate in Film and Media Studies at Yale is always undertaken in combination with one of ten other disciplines in the Humanities (African-American Studies, American Studies, Comparative Literature, East Asian Languages and Literatures, English, French, German, History of Art, Italian, Slavic Languages and Literatures).   It was thought, and has proven true, that upon completing their degrees, students who are prepared for positions in both Film and Media and in another discipline would hold a particular advantage, and not merely because of the wider range of openings available to them in the job market, but because the calculated interdisciplinarity of their research makes them stand out. Thoroughly grounded in Film and Media Studies, they become expert in certain of its issues by offering authoritative perspectives and methods that derive from systematic work with the outstanding faculty and graduate students in another Yale department or program. Our students are welcomed throughout the Humanities on campus as they enliven traditional disciplines with the images, sounds, and ideas they bring from Film and Media Studies.

The faculty and its curriculum represent a full range of topics that have been at the center of Film Studies from its outset: theory, criticism, and history, plus cultural approaches to American, European, Latin American and Japanese national cinemas.  Naturally, as the field and its discipline evolve, so too do we, though always keeping ourselves based in this tradition. Transnational and global approaches bring the national cinemas, and their specialists, into productive contact. Overarching concerns involving technological, aesthetic, social and cultural issues (especially race and gender), have developed to the point that in 2015 the Program added “Media” to its name and mission. FMS, as our Program is now called for short, officially embraces images and sounds from an array of sources and channels, especially as these coexist and intertwine with cinema, something that has occurred throughout its long history.  We study that history as well as the challenge and possibilities of “new media,” which we know to be on the minds of graduate students. This keeps Yale’s Program vigilant as it looks to the past for cues about ways to best approach the future. The faculty recognizes that graduate students must be in the lead of an evolving discipline, and so encourages them to take up the most current developments and debates. The goal of the Program’s pedagogy is to provide its current students with a steady anchor in what the discipline has been, so that they can confidently and creatively participate at the highest level in its discourse and institutions, leading it forward while passing continuing its legacy.

Your work as a doctoral student will be shaped by our commitment to:

His dissertation "Image Objects: An Archaeology of Computer Graphics, 1965-1979" investigated the early history of computer graphics and the role they play in the move toward new forms of simulation and object oriented design.

His dissertation traced the history of the visualization of Beirut, from the politics of aerial photography and mapping during the French Mandate, to the visual economy of postwar construction, to the materiality of Hizballah's live satellite television.

Liz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Urban Planning and the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at UCLA. Previously, she was a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at MIT. Her research examines the cultural, political, and sociological dimensions of climate change adaptation. Devon is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Advertising, Media & Communication at Temple University. Powers' research interests include popular music, 20th century history, and cultural intermediation – the people and processes that operate "in between" the production and consumption of culture. Powers completed a fellowship at the University of Leeds in 2014, and was recently elected Vice Chair of the Popular Communication Division of the International Communication Association.

Matthew is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Washington-Seattle. His dissertation "Humanity's Publics: NGOs, Journalism and the International Public Sphere" examined reporting roles assumed by international NGOs as legacy media outlets cut their foreign news budgets, and received the Gene Burd Outstanding Dissertation in Journalism Studies award from the International Communication Association.

Doctoral program.

Our doctoral program is among the best programs in journalism and media in the U.S.  Led by faculty with distinguished research and publication records – many with professional journalism or media experience – our program is designed to equip students with a strong theoretical grounding and versatile research methods.  Graduates of our four-year program can go on to positions in the academy, and they also may join think tanks, advocacy and non-governmental organizations and professional associations working with information and media systems.   

We offer a far-reaching array of electives and research opportunities. The faculties’ fields of interest broadly include news and media engagement; online incivility; digital media; mis and disinformation; the digital divide and information equity; media law and policy, including the impact of Artificial Intelligence and algorithms on media; journalism and democracy; global media systems; media and representation; visual communication studies; critical data studies; social media and platform studies; media economics, among other topics.  Please look at  faculty bios  and description of research opportunities  to learn more about current projects.   

Our program incorporates many opportunities to undertake research independently or to work with groups associated with research centers, institutes or research groups. We have an excellent record of participation with the major professional associations including the Association for Education in Journalism and Media Communication ( AEJ MC ), the International Communication Association ( ICA ),  the International Association of Media and Communication Research ( IAMCR ), the Association of Internet Research ( AoIR ), as well as smaller highly focused forums such as The Research Conference on Communications, Information and Internet Policy. 

Interdisciplinary Work

Our students also participate with the many interdisciplinary  Portfolio Programs  on campus.  Moody College is home to three such programs, including the  Communication, Information and Cultural Policy  program focused on media systems, directed by some of our faculty.  Additionally, summer internships with professional or research programs are sometimes sponsored by associated research institutes.  Students have taken advantage of UT’s  Archer Program , and the multi-University COMPASS program associated with the Technology and Information Policy Institute.

In an inherently interdisciplinary field, Annenberg researchers are engaged with a spectrum of topics related to health, politics, media systems, networks and digital culture, journalism, race and gender, and more, using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

In addition to a full tuition waiver, our students currently receive an annual stipend as well as a budget for research and travel and health insurance for all five years.

Annenberg is the smallest of the 12 schools at Penn, and it functions as close-knit community of scholars whose doors are always open to one another. Our students also appreciate our staff , who routinely go above and beyond to support them.

Please note that we do not have a standalone master’s degree program at this time. All students are admitted directly into the doctoral program.

COM’s unique program prepares its doctoral students to become sophisticated researchers and critical thinkers who are ready to advance the fields of communication, sociological, and media leadership. Designed for students with a master’s degree, this program helps candidates gain a comprehensive understanding of the role of emerging media in society and organizations and hone their research skills through independent, innovative, and mentored research.

Learning and Teaching

EMS graduate students are taught and mentored by some of the leading researchers and thinkers in the field.  The faculty make full use of the most advanced theories and methods to examine communication phenomena — from social media, streaming content, and AR/VR to Big Data and AI. Under their guidance, students learn how to conduct and analyze social science research concerning all types of emerging media. 

 As a doctoral student, you’ll serve as a teaching fellow while enrolled in the program. On average, you should expect to serve as a teaching fellow a minimum of two times during the program.

All Emerging Media Studies students contribute to COM’s annual #ScreentimeBU conference, an opportunity to present their research in the field of digital communication and society as well as exchange their views with peers and field leaders concerning important contemporary issues. By showcasing the fruits of your research, you’ll share their ideas with the general public and industry leaders. Additionally, the conference provides an opportunity for you to develop your public communication capabilities and receive input from industry experts in a professional setting.

Laptops, smart phones, and tablets have been transformed from novelties to necessities. But we’re only beginning to understand how they have transformed us.

EMS students also take advantage of research opportunities at COM’s Communication Research Center , COM’s primary research hub, and the state of-the-art technology offered at the Zimmerman Family Social Activation Center, that puts in-depth social media analytics at your fingertips.

Funding Support

Because the doctoral program is immersive and requires full-time participation for a number of years, all PhD students in Emerging Media Studies are funded for the duration of their study, up to a maximum of five years. Funding includes a full tuition scholarship, health insurance credit, and stipend in return for teaching and research obligations. Students with their own funding for the program (through the Fulbright Commission, government funding or other source) will still be required to serve as a teaching fellow for at least one semester. Compensation will be provided.

The Cinema and Media Studies Ph.D. program explores the intricate histories, aesthetics, and cultural impacts of visual media.

The Cinema & Media Studies (CMS) Program at UCLA has played a central role in the development of the field, notably through scholarship grounded in critical theory, cultural studies, close textual analysis, archive-based history, digital and interactive media studies, industry studies, and transnational media studies. The program supports a broad array of critical interests, from the media arts to commercial entertainment, from historical research to contemporary practices, and from formal analysis to the social mapping of media. In the last few years the research profile of the faculty has concentrated on three main areas of research: The Politics of Race, Ethnicity, and Indigeneity (particularly, Chicana/o, African American/African Diaspora, and Asian), Queer Cinema/Gender and Sexuality Studies, and Critical Theory (particularly, moving image art, aesthetic, affect, computational media, and decolonial).

The Ph.D. program focuses on refining research skills in an individualized study plan, with a mission to produce research of unparalleled quality. Graduates often transition into esteemed teaching and research roles in academic institutions. Backing their research endeavors is the UCLA Library Film & Television Archive, offering vast resources, 35mm classroom screenings, and state-of-the-art digital technology facilities.

The Ph.D. program is intended primarily for students who wish to build a career around excellence in university teaching and research. The Ph.D. program requires successful completion of a minimum of seven core courses and at least seven elective courses (not counting those completed at the masters level) and successful completion of the Intellectual Statement, Third Quarter Review, Sixth Quarter Review, Comprehensive Exam, Prospectus Review, Foreign Language Requirement at level three or higher, and successful submission and defense of the Dissertation.

Media psychology starts with psychology.  Where traditional communication, media studies, sociology, or psychology programs focus on process or isolate media from human experience, media psychology looks for answer to the ‘why.’  Why do people react to media the way they do?  Why do people use some technologies more than others?  Why does technology use impact wellbeing?  Why does social representation matter? Qualifying Exam Presentation: Digital Emotion Regulation of Positive Emotions

The Fielding Qualifying Exam (QE) is the final step in the doctoral program preceding the dissertation. As a media psychology doctoral student, Jay Grant’s QE and subsequent research, focus on the use of digital technologies for emotional regulation with an interest in positive media psychology.  Jay explores how the range of technologies from immersive technology and gaming to social media enable people to manage their emotional experiences.  This is increasingly important as people have on-demand access to social environments nearly anytime and anywhere. In considering the current landscape, Jay’s review encompasses emotion theories and self-determination theory to explain the phenomenon of digital emotion regulation with an emphasis on positive emotions, the components of emotional intelligence and social contexts.

Cinema and Media Studies, PhD

The Department offers a full-time Ph.D. program. Comprehensive in the range of specializations, the program is intellectually dynamic and rigorous. Our Ph.D. program prepares students for full participation in the profession as scholars and teachers of Cinema and Media Studies, broadly conceived.  The Ph.D. provides students with training in a variety of global and comparative approaches to studying diverse national cinemas and a variety of media institutions and art practices. We are committed to an advanced humanities education to address our shared need to be able to think historically and critically about the structures, operations, ethics, aesthetics, and interactions of cinema and media.    Our departmental ethos reflects our commitment to fostering an inclusive environment that is at once rigorous and nurturing. We expect our graduate students to be full members of the Department and encourage them to take an active role in the intellectual and social community of the University by attending colloquia, screenings, roundtables, discussions, and events in the Department as well as across campus.

Required Courses

The total number of course units required is 16. 

Teaching Requirement

Four semesters of teaching are required.

Language Requirement

In addition to a command of English, students must demonstrate reading knowledge in a minimum of one research language relevant to the particular subfield being studied. More languages may be required by the proposed field of study, and the program strongly encourages multiple language acquisition. The specific languages required for each student will be determined by the student and the student’s faculty advisor in consultation with the Graduate Chair. As Digital Humanities is becoming such a large part of our new department, we will also consider programming languages as needed.

Qualifications Evaluation

At the end of the second year, students will select one paper from those they have written in their first year of study, substantially developing it over the course of two further semesters in dialogue with their advisor and two additional members of the Graduate Group. This group of three faculty members constitutes the Qualifications Examination Committee. Students will work on the paper throughout the first semester of their second year. In the spring semester of their second year, the student will present their paper to the committee, followed by a discussion. The Qualifications Exam assesses a student’s ability to write a coherent research paper of publishable quality. The student’s grade (High Pass/Pass/Fail) will be recorded, and both the student and the SAS Graduate Division will be notified of the outcome of the evaluation.

The field exam is a two-hour oral exam, which will take place at the end of the fall semester of the student’s third year. It consists of questions about the student’s lists, fields, and write-ups. The student will be given these questions in the form of two separate closed-book three-hour exams that will be taken a week apart from each other. The Fields Committee will then meet with the candidate to discuss the written answers and offer feedback.

Candidacy Examination

A Ph.D. Candidacy Examination will be held after the candidate has completed all required coursework, including language requirements and attendance at the CIMS colloquium. The candidacy exam, which will be both oral and written, entails the successful defense of a Dissertation Proposal with the Dissertation Committee. The Dissertation Committee will meet with the student to discuss the proposal for a two-hour session sometime in mid- spring semester of the third year. Feedback will be provided to the student and the student may be asked to make revisions to the proposal. The final version of the dissertation proposal must be submitted by the last day of classes of the Spring semester.

Dissertation Defense

Upon completion of the dissertation, students will present an overview of their research project to faculty and peers. This presentation will be followed by a closed conversation among the student, the dissertation committee (who will have received the complete dissertation several weeks earlier), and the graduate chair. This will allow faculty members formally to evaluate the project formally and to give feedback on how to develop the project in the future.

Offered jointly by the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Ph.D. in Education provides you with full access to the extraordinary resources of Harvard University and prepares you to assume meaningful roles as university faculty, researchers, senior-level education leaders, and policymakers.

As a Ph.D. candidate, you will collaborate with scholars across all Harvard graduate schools on original interdisciplinary research. In the process, you will help forge new fields of inquiry that will impact the way we teach and learn. The program’s required coursework will develop your knowledge of education and your expertise in a range of quantitative and qualitative methods needed to conduct high-quality research. Guided by the goal of making a transformative impact on education research, policy, and practice, you will focus on independent research in various domains, including human development, learning and teaching, policy analysis and evaluation, institutions and society, and instructional practice.   

Curriculum Information

The Ph.D. in Education requires five years of full-time study to complete. You will choose your individual coursework and design your original research in close consultation with your HGSE faculty adviser and dissertation committee. The requirements listed below include the three Ph.D. concentrations: Culture, Institutions, and Society; Education Policy and Program Evaluation; and Human Development, Learning and Teaching .

Ph.D. Concentrations and Examples

Summary of Ph.D. Program

Doctoral Colloquia  In year one and two you are required to attend. The colloquia convenes weekly and features presentations of work-in-progress and completed work by Harvard faculty, faculty and researchers from outside Harvard, and Harvard doctoral students. Ph.D. students present once in the colloquia over the course of their career.

Research Apprenticeship The Research Apprenticeship is designed to provide ongoing training and mentoring to develop your research skills throughout the entire program.

Teaching Fellowships The Teaching Fellowship is an opportunity to enhance students' teaching skills, promote learning consolidation, and provide opportunities to collaborate with faculty on pedagogical development.

Comprehensive Exams  The Written Exam (year 2, spring) tests you on both general and concentration-specific knowledge. The Oral Exam (year 3, fall/winter) tests your command of your chosen field of study and your ability to design, develop, and implement an original research project.

Dissertation  Based on your original research, the dissertation process consists of three parts: the Dissertation Proposal, the writing, and an oral defense before the members of your dissertation committee.

Culture, Institutions, and Society (CIS) Concentration

In CIS, you will examine the broader cultural, institutional, organizational, and social contexts relevant to education across the lifespan. What is the value and purpose of education? How do cultural, institutional, and social factors shape educational processes and outcomes? How effective are social movements and community action in education reform? How do we measure stratification and institutional inequality? In CIS, your work will be informed by theories and methods from sociology, history, political science, organizational behavior and management, philosophy, and anthropology. You can examine contexts as diverse as classrooms, families, neighborhoods, schools, colleges and universities, religious institutions, nonprofits, government agencies, and more.

Education Policy and Program Evaluation (EPPE) Concentration

In EPPE, you will research the design, implementation, and evaluation of education policy affecting early childhood, K–12, and postsecondary education in the U.S. and internationally. You will evaluate and assess individual programs and policies related to critical issues like access to education, teacher effectiveness, school finance, testing and accountability systems, school choice, financial aid, college enrollment and persistence, and more. Your work will be informed by theories and methods from economics, political science, public policy, and sociology, history, philosophy, and statistics. This concentration shares some themes with CIS, but your work with EPPE will focus on public policy and large-scale reforms.

Human Development, Learning and Teaching (HDLT) Concentration

In HDLT, you will work to advance the role of scientific research in education policy, reform, and practice. New discoveries in the science of learning and development — the integration of biological, cognitive, and social processes; the relationships between technology and learning; or the factors that influence individual variations in learning — are transforming the practice of teaching and learning in both formal and informal settings. Whether studying behavioral, cognitive, or social-emotional development in children or the design of learning technologies to maximize understanding, you will gain a strong background in human development, the science of learning, and sociocultural factors that explain variation in learning and developmental pathways. Your research will be informed by theories and methods from psychology, cognitive science, sociology and linguistics, philosophy, the biological sciences and mathematics, and organizational behavior.

Introduction to the Major

Media Studies is an interdisciplinary group major that weds a variety of traditions including communication, anthropology, sociology, political science, and journalism with contemporary critical and cultural studies to examine media technologies, forms, institutions, economics, policies, culture, and audiences. Students learn media history , practice, and theory in the United States and abroad. Media Studies students specialize in one of three areas of concentration: Digital Studies, Global Cultural Studies, or Media Law and Policy .

One is Media Studies 10 or W10: Introduction to Media Studies. It is open to sophomores after two semesters at Berkeley and first-semester transfer students. Beginning fall 2020, students are required to take this course at Berkeley.

Will an MBA Help You Become an Investment Banker?

A Master of Business Administration degree from a top business school is almost a necessity, experts say.

Experts advise students from lower-ranked MBA programs to divide their efforts between networking for positions at top banks and applying to regional or middle-market banks.

Investment banking can be a lucrative and rewarding career for those able to secure a job at a multinational like Goldman Sachs or J.P. Morgan. But to even get a foot in the door, an MBA from a top business school is a virtual necessity, experts say.

“Banks expect a certain level of academic training, technical proficiency and, for lack of a better word, ‘polish’ provided by top MBA programs,” Drew Pascarella, senior lecturer of finance at Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management in New York, wrote in an email.

While attending a top ranked MBA program won’t guarantee a job offer after graduation, it is the first step in making a dream a reality for most aspiring investment bankers.

The Path to Investment Banking 

Investment banker can be a broad term, but in general it refers to professionals who work for investment banks advising corporate clients on mergers, acquisitions and raising capital.

Although experts say there are always a few exceptions to the rule, most future investment bankers have only two paths into the field. The first is by joining a bank right out of undergrad as an analyst. The other is joining as an associate after graduating from an MBA program.

“There’s not really another path unless you’re promoted as an undergrad,” says Sunshine Singer, a career adviser for investment banking at The Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania. “Besides that, there’s not really a path besides the MBA .”

While the degree gives students the skills to become investment bankers, top business schools also provide networking and recruitment opportunities that are hard for non-MBA candidates to find on their own. That's because most prominent investment banks have well-established recruitment relationships with business schools and rarely hire associates through other avenues, experts say.

Investment banks also rarely hire professionals from other fields. They tend to follow a rigid hiring schedule based on graduation cycles, so there are few opportunities for on-demand hiring. It’s also rare for early- or mid-career applicants to transition into investment banking.

“A non-investment banker lateraling into the industry from the outside will generally have a particularly difficult time performing at a level expected of a banker, given their lack of ‘time-in-seat’ experience,” Pascarella says.

Pascarella notes one exception: candidates who hold a law degree and have worked on the same type of corporate deals in their legal career, and therefore have a solid background in business fundamentals.

The MBA and Investment Banking 

An MBA offers students a wealth of resources as they prepare for a career as an investment banker.

Aside from the courses that will train them in the skills needed to perform their job, perhaps the most important path into the investment banking world will be a student’s summer internship between the first and second year of the MBA program, experts say.

“That summer internship is the biggest feeder to a full-time job,” Singer says. “Most banks look to fill their incoming class with interns.”

After completing an internship, students also have the option of joining their school’s investment banking club. These clubs offer students extensive networking opportunities, events with professional bankers and interview prep for when they enter the job market.

Despite all these advantages, even candidates with an MBA will find it difficult to land an investment banking job if they haven’t attended a top business school.

“Associate-level hiring is extremely network-driven,” Singer says. “MBA programs have dinners, they have ‘lunch-and-learns,’ they do a lot more networking, so I think it’s more difficult if you’re not at a top-30 program.”

Columbia in New York NYU Stern , Chicago Booth in Illinois, Wharton and Cornell frequently led business schools for graduates obtaining investment banking jobs, according to 2020 data from MBA admissions consulting firm Menlo Coaching. Those schools rank in the top tier of all business schools, U.S. News data shows.

For students who attend lower-ranked MBA programs, experts recommend splitting their time between networking to find a position with a top bank and applying to regional or middle-market banks.

The Best MBA Courses for Investment Bankers 

To prepare for the technical aspects of investment banking, MBA students should focus on courses centered on the “big skills” needed for the job, including accounting, corporate finance and corporate valuation, experts recommend.

While these are essential entry-level skills, David White, founding partner at Menlo Coaching, advises aspiring investment bankers to add MBA courses targeting the leadership, management and communications skills they'll need later in their careers.

“As bankers become more senior,” Pascarella says, “they need to be able to market themselves and their firm effectively in a highly competitive market with a sophisticated client base; to build valuable relationships with clients; to turn massive amounts of data and analysis into actionable and credible advice; and to lead large teams of people through the most complex deals a company will ever do.”

For MBA students aiming to work at a firm focused on a single sector, White recommends tailoring coursework to those particular areas of banking.

“For example, a restructuring banker may find it useful to take cross-listed courses from their university's law school about legal procedure to better understand what is likely to happen during a bankruptcy process, or an energy banker may want to take courses about the economics of renewable energy,” White wrote in an email.

Job Outlook and Earnings for an Investment Banker 

While it's difficult to break into investment banking, successful job seekers will enter a fast-growing sector with high earning potential.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 7% growth from 2022 to 2032 for securities, commodities and financial services sales agents – a sector that includes investment bankers.

According to Payscale, the average investment banker salary is a little over $116,000, but that number doesn’t include year-end bonuses – as high as $90,000 to $130,000 for top performers. High earnings typically come high pressure and demanding working conditions, and according to a report from Goldman Sachs, first-year analysts work on average close to 100 hours a week.

Fluctuations in the global economy are affecting investment banks. However, while student interest in fields like consulting and tech was down, competition for investment banking jobs was highly competitive this past year, Singer says.

“It’s one of the best training grounds for finance you can get,” Singer says. “Whether they want to stay in banking or move on, students know they are going to gain strong finance skills in that role. It’s also great training and lots of exposure to different types of deals and companies.”

This means that a percentage of your time will be spent on campus, participating in seminars, workshops, or networking events. Alexandra Ledesma is a new graduate from the Construction Management program. An immigrant from Venezuela, she describes in her own words why she chose UH, and the professor that helped her achieve her best.

As an immigrant student originally from Venezuela, I would love to share my opinion after graduating from the University of Houston's M.S. Construction Management program, graduating with a 4.0 GPA while working two jobs and volunteering. 

I was born and raised in the vibrant city of Maracaibo, Venezuela. My love for architecture blossomed when I went on a three month tour of Europe at 15. 

My academic journey started at the University of Rafael Urdaneta, where I attained a Bachelor of Architecture at 19. My ambition led me to explore opportunities beyond my homeland, and I planned to pursue an Aeronautics graduate program in France. 

However, fate took a different turn for me when I came to Houston. I was initially intending to visit my brother for a brief period, but I decided to stay after experiencing the city's vibrant atmosphere and abundant opportunities. 

Immersing myself in the field of construction management through internships and academic pursuits, I discovered my calling – to contribute to community development through large-scale construction projects.

I began a graduate program in Construction Management at UH in February 2022. I embraced the opportunity to work alongside like-minded individuals, contributing my unique blend of architectural expertise and construction management skills to various teams working public construction projects. 

What truly made my time at UH remarkable was the unwavering support and guidance I received from professors like Lu Gao , associate professor in the Construction Management Department. He brought a wealth of knowledge and passion to the classroom. 

His commitment to student success and his ability to impart practical wisdom left an indelible mark on my educational journey. Through his mentorship and the collective efforts of all UH professors, I was equipped with the tools and inspiration to excel in my field and in school, graduating with 4.0 GPA. 

My time at the university has not only shaped my professional path but has also instilled a deep sense of pride and belonging to the Cougar community. With gratitude for the opportunities I have been afforded and a renewed sense of purpose, I look forward to continuing my journey of contributing to the construction industry and making a positive difference in the world.
