Shyness is a sense of awkwardness or apprehension that some people consistently feel when approaching or being approached by others. Shyness is a response to fear , and research suggests that although there is a neurobiology of shyness—the behavioral repertoire is orchestrated by a specific circuit of neurons in the brain—it is also strongly influenced by parenting practices and life experiences.

Shyness emerges from a few key characteristics: self-consciousness, negative self-preoccupation, low self-esteem and fear of judgment and rejection. Shy people often make unrealistic social comparisons, pitting themselves against the most vibrant or outgoing individuals. Believing that others are constantly evaluating them poorly, shy people abandon new social opportunities—which, in turn, prevents them from improving their social skills.
Shyness is characterized by excessive self-consciousness, negative self-evaluation, and negative self-preoccupation, features that involve a sense of self. Since a sense of self develops around 18 months old, one can argue that people cannot be born shy. Around 20 percent of children are born with a highly reactive temperament, but that doesn’t guarantee that they will be shy or unable to change their behavior.
Shyness is driven by both biological and environmental forces. Babies are born with different temperaments, and those with an extremely sensitive temperament are more likely to go on to be shy. Yet supportive, sensitive parenting can buffer against developing shyness or social anxiety .
Shyness can be heightened during adolescence, since teens have to navigate new situations from classes to friendships to puberty. They may fear being embarrassed, rejected, or fully known. Parents can encourage teens to think about how they would act if those fears were irrelevant, and then help them practice cultivating those behaviors and skills.
Shyness is distinct from introversion. Introverts feel energized by time alone; shy people often want to connect with others, but don't know how or can’t tolerate the anxiety and fear of negative judgment that comes with human interaction. Their inclination to turn inward to monitor their own behavior and perceived shortcomings can prevent them from developing relationships.
The cultural values that children absorb from their parents and the larger society influence their social tendencies. Approximately 40 to 50 percent of American adults consider themselves shy, while 30 percent of Israelis and 60 percent of the Japanese say the same. Cultural styles of assigning blame and praise likely contribute to these cultural differences.
Shy people can successfully address social challenges without altering their sense of identity . Researchers find that it's often best for people to acknowledge their shyness and try to release themselves from feeling self-conscious.
A number of concrete strategies can boost social confidence . Instead of avoiding social events, shy people can schedule them in advance and practice their social skills ahead of time. They can plan a few questions and talking points, and observe the discussion to get their bearings before contributing. They can also work to reframe their mindset, expecting a positive outcome rather than assuming a negative reaction is inevitable.
Preparing for a social situation can shift your focus from what can go wrong to what can go right. Prepare questions for others and anecdotes you’d like to share. Reflect on what you might have in common. Being curious about others and softening your self-criticism can be helpful as well.
Shyness doesn’t disappear on its own. Shy people are most successful when they acknowledge and understand their shyness, and then act based on that self-awareness. They recognize that small talk may not come naturally, so they plan ahead, rehearse questions and anecdotes, and arrive early to feel comfortable in the new setting.
Parents can help shy children cultivate friendships without pushing them to be someone they’re not. Parents can encourage the child’s passions, as friendships can form around a shared activity. It is said that the increasing rate of shyness people is a dangerous issue in recent years. As shyness is so prevalent in the world, it is not surprising that social scientists are learning more about it. In this essay, I intend to explore the source causes of this phenomenon and its affections along with some possible solutions.
Chief among the causes of this problem is a family structure as family is a place where a child grows up, and it also has a big impact on each individual in field of characteristic. A method used to train children has played a major role. Should individual be brought up by single-parent homes, they absolutely will get less concern than their other friends. Thus, in long-term, less confidence, and social-isolation are these problems that they have to deal with. Besides, living with hectic parents spending their whole time at work is a potential factor. Those who have not enough time to take their children to visit grandparents, socialize with neighbours or friends, which lead in to lack of social skills then they begin to feel timidly, and inhibited.
One of the most critical influences of shyness is lack of soft skills. The shy is frequently being shaky and realize too difficult to express a meaningful sentence. In addition, it appears that they fear of standing in crowed-place, which is a disadvantage while having an interview in order to apply a new job. Also, because of less interaction with public, people being blushing have a few friends; thus, they are risk of illness namely depression, and autism.
Fortunately, there are things that can be done to resolve this issue. Firstly, people should join some outdoor activities such as attending clubs, volunteer work, and camping so that they stay optimistic. Secondly, a healthy lifestyle is a appropriate measure. Try to do exercise every day, having a balance diet, and cut down time on computer’s screen. These solutions not only prevent people from shyness but also help them stay away from another problems as heart disease or high blood pressure.

Poor sleep can make anxiety, depression and other mental health issues worse. Here’s what to do about it.

It started with mild anxiety.
Emily, who asked to be identified only by her first name because she was discussing her mental health, had just moved to New York City after graduate school, to start a marketing job at a big law firm.
She knew it was normal to feel a little on edge. But she wasn’t prepared for what came next: chronic insomnia.
Operating on only three or four hours of sleep, it didn’t take long for her anxiety to ramp up: At 25, she was “freaking nervous all the time. A wreck.”
When a lawyer at her firm yelled at her one day, she experienced the first of many panic attacks. At a doctor’s suggestion, she tried taking a sleeping pill, in the hopes that it might “reset” her sleep cycle and improve her mood. It didn’t work.
Americans are chronically sleep deprived: one-third of adults in the United States say they get less than 7 hours a night. Teenagers fare even worse: About 70 percent of high school students don’t get enough sleep on school nights.
And it is having a profound effect on mental health.
An analysis of 19 studies found that while sleep deprivation worsened a person’s ability to think clearly or perform certain tasks, it had a greater negative effect on mood. And when the National Sleep Foundation conducted a survey in 2022, half of those who said they slept less than 7 hours each weekday also reported having depressive symptoms. Some research even indicates that addressing insomnia may help prevent postpartum depression and anxiety .
Clearly, sleep is important. But despite the evidence, there continues to be a shortage of psychiatrists or other doctors trained in sleep medicine, leaving many to educate themselves. So what happens to our mental health if we aren’t getting enough sleep, and what can be done about it?
How does poor sleep affect your mood?
When people have trouble sleeping, it changes how they experience stress and negative emotions, said Aric Prather, a sleep researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, who treats patients with insomnia. “And for some, this can have a feed-forward effect — feeling bad, ruminating, feeling stressed can bleed into our nights,” he said.
Carly Demler, 40, a stay-at-home mother in North Carolina, said she went to bed one night and never fell asleep . From that point onward, she would be up at least once a week until 3 or 4 a.m. It continued for more than a year.
She became irritable, less patient and far more anxious.
Hormone blood work and a sleep study in a university lab offered her no answers. Even after taking Ambien, she stayed up most of the night. “It was like my anxiety was a fire that somehow jumped the fence and somehow ended up expanding into my nights,” she said. “I just felt I had no control.”
In the end, it was cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia , or C.B.T.-I., that brought Ms. Demler the most relief. Studies have found that C.B.T.-I. is more effective than sleep medications are over the long term: As many as 80 percent of the people who try it see improvements in their sleep.
Ms. Demler learned not to “lay in bed and freak out.” Instead, she gets up and reads so as not to associate her bedroom with anxiety, then returns to bed when she’s tired.
“The feeling of gratitude that I have every morning, when I wake up and feel well rested, I don’t think will ever go away,” she said. “That’s been an unexpected silver lining.”
Adults need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep a night, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . Teenagers and young children need even more.
It’s not just about quantity. The quality of your sleep is also important. If it takes more than 30 minutes to fall asleep, for example, or if you regularly wake up in the middle of the night, it is harder to feel rested, regardless of the number of hours you spend in bed.
But some people “have a tendency to think they’re functioning well even if they’re sleepy during the day or having a harder time focusing,” said Lynn Bufka, a clinical psychologist and spokeswoman for the American Psychological Association.
Ask yourself how you feel during the day: Do you find that you’re more impatient or quick to anger? Are you having more negative thoughts or do you feel more anxious or depressed? Do you find it harder to cope with stress? Do you find it difficult to do your work efficiently?
If so, it’s time to take action.
How to stop the cycle.
We’ve all heard how important it is to practice good sleep hygiene , employing the daily habits that promote healthy sleep. And it’s important to speak with your doctor, in order to rule out any physical problems that need to be addressed, like a thyroid disorder or restless legs syndrome.
But this is only part of the solution.
Conditions like anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and bipolar disorder can make it harder to sleep, which can then exacerbate the symptoms of mental illness, which in turn makes it harder to sleep well.
“It becomes this very difficult to break cycle,” Dr. Bufka said.
Certain medications, including psychiatric drugs like antidepressants, can also cause insomnia. If a medication is to blame, talk to your doctor about switching to a different one, taking it earlier in the day or lowering the dose, said Dr. Ramaswamy Viswanathan, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at State University of New York Downstate Health Sciences University and the incoming president of the American Psychiatric Association.
The cycle can afflict those without mental health disorders too, when worries worsen sleep and a lack of sleep worsens mood.
Emily, who worked in the big law firm, would become so concerned about her inability to sleep that she didn’t even want to get into bed.
“You really start to believe ‘I’m never going to sleep,’” she said. “The adrenaline is running so high that you can’t possibly do it.”
Eventually she came across “Say Goodnight to Insomnia” by Gregg D. Jacobs. The book, which uses C.B.T.-I. techniques, helped Emily to reframe the way she thought about sleep. She began writing down her negative thoughts in a journal and then changing them to positive ones. For example: “What if I’m never able to fall asleep again?” would become “Your body is made to sleep. If you don’t get enough rest one night, you will eventually.” These exercises helped her stop catastrophizing.
Once she started sleeping again, she felt “way happier.”
Now, at 43, nearly 20 years after she moved to New York, she is still relying on the techniques she learned, and brings the book along whenever she travels. If she doesn’t sleep well away from home, “I catch up on sleep for a few days if necessary,” she said. “I’m way more relaxed about it.”

Structurally, a cause and effect essay is similar to other types of essays. It starts with an introduction paragraph where you hook your reader, state your thesis, and give a quick preview of the points you’ll make to support your thesis.
Following the introduction, each point supporting your thesis has its own section. Each section can be as short as one paragraph or contain a few paragraphs, depending on how much information you need to convey and whether your essay must adhere to a word count or page limit. There are a few different ways to organize your essay’s body paragraphs. You can discuss each cause, section by section, and then discuss each effect afterward (if there is only one effect, include just a single section about it). To write a cause and effect essay, follow the same writing process that you follow when you’re doing other kinds of writing. Start with brainstorming your topic and jotting down any insights you have, questions you want to answer, associations you plan to make between topics, and facts you intend to reference.
After brainstorming , take your notes and create an organized outline . Remember, your essay outline is a guideline for you to follow as you write, not a final script your essay has to follow. List each section as a header in your outline and below it write down the bullet points you plan to cover within that section. Outlining makes it easy to visualize how your final essay will look and to determine where each body paragraph logically fits into the structure.
Once your outline is finished, it’s time to write! But before you dive into your first draft, nail down your thesis statement , if you haven’t already. This is a concise and informative statement that tells the reader exactly what your essay is about. It goes in your introduction paragraph, and each body paragraph that follows should support this statement.
With your thesis statement prepared, write your body paragraphs using your notes from your brainstorming session. Remember what kind of essay you’re writing and frame its body paragraphs accordingly—if a supporting paragraph doesn’t clearly show how its subject is a cause leading to a specific effect, reframe it to fit this format. Remember, you’re only on the first draft, and there will be time to revise it later.
Once you’re finished writing, give your essay time to cool off. Ideally, take about twenty-four hours before you edit it. When you go back and edit, pay close attention to how you’ve presented each cause and effect. Ask yourself the following questions:
