Doing a Phd

If you have completed your Master's programme, and you are enthusiastic about doing research in your field, then maybe doing a Doctorate (PhD) might be something for you. A Doctor’s degree is the highest academic degree awarded by a Dutch university. You start as 'assistant in training' (aio) or 'researcher in training' (oio).

At Utrecht University

At Utrecht University you take part in education in one of the Graduate Schools and often also teach students. During the four-year PhD programme you work under the guidance of a professor on creating a research project that results in a dissertation or a series of articles in scientific journals. You can search for positions on research projects on offer or a position whereby you are free to submit your own research proposal. Read more on doing a PhD at Utrecht University.

Other options

The best way to find a PhD position is through networking with the professor in the field you wish to specialize. Another option is to search via www.academictransfer.nl . Here you can also find more information on doing PhD research in the Netherlands.

Media, Art and Performance Studies

Media, Art and Performance Studies is an interdisciplinary and internationally oriented research-based programme which offers an advanced training in academic research skills appropriate for today's highly dynamic and interdisciplinary field of media, visual arts and performance.

Investigating emerging media, art and performance

As a student of this programme, you will be introduced to and specialise in new research areas and methodologies, necessary for investigating emerging media, performance and contemporary art forms within today's rapidly changing culture. In relation to this you will also reflect on the role of the Humanities in both academic and public debates.

Central concerns in the programme

  • the role and meaning of (visual) media in a mediatised society, inter- and transmedial practices in theatre, dance, film, television, digital media and visual arts
  • spectator- and usership, the performative turn in contemporary arts and media
  • technology, materiality and corporeal literacies
  • game, play and activism
  • changing institutions, mobile and/or location-based media, urban interfaces, navigational screen-based practices
  • art and media ecologies

Research questions

In this programme you will reflect on questions such as:

  • How have media developed from the time of early cinema up to current new media art?
  • How has the definition of 'live' changed alongside these mediatised cultural forms?
  • How has the performative turn changed the ways we think about audiences?
  • How do media technologies facilitate new methods of self-staging and social performance?
  • What is the influence of media and technology on way we curate and educate in museums and archives and other cultural institutions.

Media, Art and Performance Studies is a selective Master’s programme. Do you want to find out if you are eligible for this Master?

Why this programme in Utrecht?

Art in relation to media and performance.

Unique in its profile is the programme’s focus on contemporary art in relation to media and performance, which entails the examination of principles of creation, curation (including exhibition and staging), and collecting and archiving across these fields. Examples of topics are:

  • history of new media art
  • performativity and the visual arts
  • hybridisation in and of art and performance
  • staging and restaging of art exhibitions

ICON research institute

This programme is firmly anchored in research conducted by the Institute for Cultural Inquiry (ICON) at Utrecht University. The Faculty of Humanities combines strong expertise in historical research into local, regional, and global media practices with theoretical research into concepts of performativity; embodiment; visuality; media literacy; intermediality/transmediality/crossmediality; participation; data visualization; mobility; urban culture.

After graduation

Alumni of the Media, Art and Performance Studies research Master’s have been successful in obtaining PhD positions in various prestigious international programmes. Graduates also find their way to other job markets.

We are a growth-focused media and marketing communications agency, driven by innovation and creativity.

Founded in London in 1990, we were the first media agency to offer strategic and creative planning at a time when the industry was about buying cheaply and quickly.

And we continue to ensure that our capability and approach evolve in line with changes in media, data, technology, commerce, society, and legislation.

Today, with over 100 offices in 74 countries, we continue to create remarkable campaigns that lead to remarkable growth – using the extending canvas of data and technology.

We create campaigns that help brands move beyond incremental improvements and leap ahead of their competitors.

Why are women becoming so much more liberal than men?

Perhaps counterintuitively, gender equality is leading to greater gender-related differences..

A man opposed to abortion argued with a woman who supports abortion rights at the March for Life in Washington on Jan. 24, 2020.

In most wealthy nations, women have been steadily closing the gap with men on several fronts. In the United States, women now earn the majority of the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. Women now receive more than half of STEM college degrees, and the proportion of women in the tech sector has risen in recent years, to 35 percent in 2023 from 31 percent in 2019. Among Americans younger than 30, women’s earnings rival or even surpass men’s in many metropolitan areas, including Boston , New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.

As these gaps have narrowed, we might have expected men and women to become more alike in other ways, including their cultural values and politics. Yet we are seeing the reverse.

This is especially true when it comes to political orientation. Recent polls have highlighted increasing polarization along gender lines on various political issues. Since 2014, women younger than 30 have become steadily more left-leaning each year, while young men have remained relatively static in their political views. In 2021, 44 percent of young women in the United States identified as liberal compared with just 25 percent of young men — the biggest gender gap in 24 years of polling.

In the Financial Times, John Burn-Murdoch recently articulated this stark contrast in a piece titled “A new global gender divide is emerging.” He observes that while older women and men are similar in their political views, young women have veered sharply to the left of young men.

Burn-Murdoch cites the influence of the #MeToo movement, suggesting it empowered young women to address longstanding injustices.

The Washington Post’s editorial board suggested that such polarization is to be expected in the United States, “a large, unwieldy democracy.” The Guardian proposes that digital spaces and social media influencers are luring young people into disparate online platforms that cultivate more extreme political views. No doubt these all play some role.

However, I’d like to propose an idea from my home discipline of academic psychology: the gender-equality paradox . This emerged as one of the most mind-blowing findings that researchers published while I was pursuing my recent doctoral studies at the University of Cambridge.

The paradox is straightforward: Societies with higher levels of wealth, political equality, and women in the workforce show larger personal, social, and political differences between men and women. In other words, the wealthier and more egalitarian the country, the larger the gender differences.

The pattern exists not just for political ideology but also for things like academic preferences , physical aggression , self-esteem , frequency of crying , interest in casual sex , and personality traits such as extraversion. In all these categories, the differences have been largest in societies that have gone the furthest in attempting to treat women and men the same.

Of course, there is an overlap for all of these attributes — aggression, for example, is a trait that both women and men can exhibit.

But there’s less overlap — meaning greater differences — in more-equal societies. In China, which scores low on gender parity, the overlap between men and women in personality traits such as extraversion and openness to experience is actually very high, 84 percent. In the Netherlands, which is among the most gender-equal societies, the overlap is just 61 percent.

More recently, a study of 67 countries found that although women generally tend to hold stricter moral views, gender differences in verdicts in hypothetical court scenarios are largest in wealthier and more equal societies. Specifically, women view misconduct more unfavorably than men in most places, but this difference in judgment is larger in richer and more equal countries.

This gender gap has also been found for physical differences in things like height, BMI, obesity, and blood pressure. Across societies, men tend to be taller, heavier, and have higher blood pressure than women. But in rich and relatively equal societies, gender differences are particularly large.

The gender-equality paradox might also help to explain why the gender gap in political orientation has grown among young people. One natural explanation is that young women are outpacing men in higher education, with men now making up just 40 percent of college students. Some evidence suggests that college tends to cultivate more liberal attitudes.

However, even among college students, women are more left-leaning than men. A Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression survey of 254 colleges and universities found that 55 percent of female students identify as liberal, compared with only 40 percent of male students. Interestingly, at schools ranked below 200 by US News and World Report, 45 percent of women and 33 percent of men identify as liberal. At top 25 schools, though, the difference is more pronounced , with 71 percent of women and 54 percent of men identifying as liberal.

The gender-equality paradox can help to explain why the gender gap is largest at the most selective US colleges., where family income tends to be higher and sociopolitical equality tends to be especially highly prized.

In an interview in The Times of London, the psychologist Steve Stewart-Williams succinctly summarized the paradox: “Treating men and women the same makes them different, and treating them differently makes them the same.”

There are a variety of possible explanations for the gender-equality paradox, but one prevailing view is that as societies become relatively more prosperous and equal, people more fully express their underlying traits and preferences.

Of course, culture matters in explaining gender differences — just not in the way most people think.

In less affluent and less egalitarian societies, gender differences in physical traits are flattened due to scarcity — that is, the absence of food and other resources stunts growth, especially for men, leading to smaller physical disparities. Moreover, gender differences in psychological traits narrow in response to rigid social expectations.

In the most equal nations of the world, it’s not harsh gender socialization by parents and media, strict societal expectations, or institutional forces that widen the differences between men and women. In the absence of dire poverty and strict social expectations, people are in a position to express their intrinsic attributes and preferences.

The freer people are and the more fairly they are treated, the more differences tend to grow rather than shrink. Thus, we shouldn’t be surprised that Gen Z men and women are diverging along political lines to a greater extent than earlier generations did.

Vincent Lloyd, PhD, Named 2024 Guggenheim Fellowship Recipient

VILLANOVA, Pa. (April 19, 2024) – Vincent Lloyd, PhD, a professor of Theology and Religious Studies and Director of the Center for Political Theology at Villanova University, has been named a 2024 Guggenheim Fellow . Chosen through a rigorous application and peer review process from a pool of almost 3,000 applicants, Dr. Lloyd is one of 188 fellows selected for this prestigious fellowship based on “career achievement and exceptional promise.” In all, 52 scholarly disciplines and artistic fields, 84 academic institutions, 38 US states and the District of Columbia, and four Canadian provinces are represented in the 2024 Guggenheim Fellow class.

Since its founding in 1925 by Senator Samuel Guggenheim, the Foundation has awarded over $400 million in fellowships to more than 19,000 fellows. Each fellow receives a monetary stipend to pursue independent work at the highest level under “the freest possible conditions.” Many Fellows’ projects directly respond to timely issues such as democracy and politics, identity, disability activism, machine learning, incarceration, climate change and community.

"Congratulations to Dr. Lloyd on this well-deserved recognition," said Adele Lindenmeyr, PhD, William and Julia Moulden Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. "The Guggenheim Fellowship is among the most prestigious awards in academia, recognizing individuals whose work demonstrates exceptional depth, promise and impact. Dr. Lloyd’s selection reflects his distinguished scholarly reputation and the timeliness of his compelling new project on the controversial Black intellectual and radical, Harold Cruse."

Selected as a Guggenheim Fellow in discipline of Intellectual & Cultural History, Dr. Lloyd’s research and teaching focuses on issues and trends related to religion in politics and race, and their impact on social change. Most recently, he is the author of  Black Dignity: The Struggle Against Domination  (Yale University Press), co-author of  Break Every Yoke: Religion, Justice, and the Abolition of Prisons  (Oxford University Press), and co-editor of the forthcoming  Political Theology Reimagined  (Duke University Press). Dr. Lloyd has co-edited the journal  Political Theology  for the past 12 years, and he co-edits the Transforming Political Theologies book series. Dr. Lloyd previously held fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies, the Louisville Institute, Durham University (UK), Emory University and Notre Dame.

During his Guggenheim Fellowship, Dr. Lloyd will be writing  Harold Cruse: Contrarian Radical , a biography of one of the forgotten founders of Black studies, to be published by Yale University Press.

About the Guggenheim Foundation : Created and initially funded in 1925, by US Senator Simon and Olga Guggenheim in memory of their son John Simon, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has sought to “further the development of scholars and artists by assisting them to engage in research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts, under the freest possible conditions.”

Since its establishment, the Foundation has granted over $400 million in Fellowships to more than 19,000 individuals, among whom are more than 125 Nobel laureates, members of all the national academies, winners of the Pulitzer Prize, Fields Medal, Turing Award, Bancroft Prize, National Book Award, and other internationally recognized honors. The broad range of fields of study is a unique characteristic of the Fellowship program.

The Foundation centers the talents and instincts of the Fellows, whose passions often have broad and immediate social impact. For example, in 1936, Zora Neale Hurston wrote Their Eyes Were Watching God with the support of a Guggenheim Fellowship and dedicated it to the Foundation’s first president, Henry Allen Moe. Photographer Robert Frank’s seminal book, The Americans, was the product of a cross-country tour supported by two Guggenheim Fellowships. The accomplishments of other early Fellows like e.e. cummings, Jennifer Doudna, Jacob Lawrence, Rachel Carson, James Baldwin, Martha Graham, and Linus Pauling also demonstrate the strength of the Foundation’s core values and the power and impact of its approach. Class of 2024: luis roman finds his script in uncg’s media studies.

Posted on April 23, 2024

UNCG student Luis Roman stands with camera statue

A sense of community drew Luis Roman to UNC Greensboro.

“UNCG has made a big impact on me, especially how they dedicate themselves to being a community-driven University,” says Roman, who will graduate in May 2024 with a bachelor’s degree in media studies . “Overall, the impact that the school has had on me with my education, friendships, and connections was more than I could ask for.”

Roman transferred to UNCG from Wake Technical Community College, originally considering a degree in psychology but UNCG helped open his eyes to the opportunities within media studies.

“I didn’t realize how diverse media studies are,” says Roman. “I’ve always been the technologically savvy kid in my family, and I’ve seen how media like film, television, and music has been transformational in my generation and community and that led me to media studies.”

The Department of Media Studies in UNCG’s College of Arts and Sciences offers courses on a wide range of moving-image media, from film and television to electronic media sources. Students learn to make media and develop the tools to think more critically. In addition to the undergraduate degree, students can also earn two minors in non-production film and television studies and radio and production.

With a 3.68 GPA and several scholarships including the Joe Illman Memorial Scholarship and the Jane and Michael Bolton Scholarship, Roman is thriving with the opportunities at UNCG.

A HORROR FANATIC

Horror movie production is where Roman says his interest in media studies also comes from, identifying himself as a “fanatic” of the genre.

“There needs to be a reintroduction of what a horror movie is today,” says Roman. “There are a lot of newer movies that are doing interesting things like those directed by Jordan Peele. This generation is entering a new era of horror movies.”

Roman is also a member of the Carmichael Studios club, an opportunity for media studies students to showcase their work and collaborate on short films.

“It’s a good way to put your work out there and see what can come out of a student-made film,” says Roman.

But Roman didn’t stop with just media studies, he’s also earning two minors in psychology and music . His interest in psychology continues from his time in community college, especially learning how people work within their environments. The music minor though is much more personal – hearing his father play music helped instill a love for the art at an early age.

THE REAL ROMAN HOUR

UNCG student smiles in cap and gown

Originally from Rahway, New Jersey, Roman played trombone in his middle school band but left music while he finished high school. UNCG helped him find his way back.

“There’s a good music scene in Greensboro and there are so many people at UNCG that have the same interests as me and we can work with each other,” Roman says. “I started studying making music electronically and was able to learn from a friend and on YouTube, basically teaching myself.”

UNCG has even allowed him to share his love for music – previously hosting a late-night radio show on WUAG called the “Real Roman Hour.”

“I would curate a list of music each week and then play it on Thursday night,” he says. “People could call in and I’ve had family members and friends from across the state being able to vibe with me. I love to share my music with people.”

Next, Roman plans to apply to internships, hoping to work in film or media production.

“What made UNCG so memorable for me is the people that I’ve met, the friends and memories that I’ve made,” says Roman. “I’ve put a lot into my media studies degree, and I’ve gotten back a lot more.”
