International Business (MBA) Bachelor Master Thesis Topics help

As a previous student in International Business & Business Administration (MBA), I remember the hardest part of the whole study program. That was to pick a topic for my masters’ degree. And I can remember the lack of help I got from searching online using search terms such as:

So I decided to make this article in order to make it easier for students to pick a topic. It took me about two weeks before I could finally decide. And that was somehow “wasting” time that I could use for proper research or writing.

So now I’m here to help you. This is your lucky day. 🙂

What are the main categories in this article, topic suggestions for international business or business administration students, do you have other ideas on topics to write about or questions, the previous article for inspiration: environmental studies topic help.

I have written an article like this before. And it turned out to become my most popular article of all time. The article is called “ Environmental/Sustainability bachelor & master thesis topic help ” and is being read by hundreds of students every month.

From what you can see in the comment section of that article, I’ve helped a lot of students pick their topic on their bachelor or master topic in environmental studies:

It actually became so popular that I had to stop answering some of them. It took waaay too much of my precious time. However, I’m not done helping students. Let’s get back to the topic of this article. Let me give you some inspiration to what you can write about as a bachelor or masters’ student in business or international business. 🙂

Just so you know, there are the master/bachelor thesis topics that I’m gonna discuss in this article:

Within every topic, there will be several specific topic suggestions that will help you to pick something that you are interested in. Please note that you are not limited to write about something within these categories. These are just “my own notes” that I found particularly interested when I was writing my master thesis. You’re also free to choose anything within statistics, accounting, logistics , etc. I just found these topics quite boring. 🙂 Let’s begin.

Let’s get straight to it. These are (some of) the good topics that I considered during the two weeks that I did extensive research every day.

1. Innovation in domestic or multinational companies

Topic: how does backshoring affect innovation*.

If you haven’t looked up “backshoring” yet, it’s about time . This is a way of doing business that is becoming more and more popular among European and American companies.

It’s a concept where companies have previously used cheap labor in Africa/South East Asia for their production. But due to various reasons, they have chosen to either build their own manufacturing or re-locate to a factory close to their own headquarter.

Backshoring might be more expensive. Yet, it can be helpful in regards to innovation, quality control, communication, and production speed. *= I actually ended up writing about this topic. I interviewed a couple of Norwegian companies and asked them this question: “ Is it more difficult to develop your product and be innovative when your manufacturer is placed in China compared to having them in Scandinavia/Norway ?”. This is an interesting topic that should be researched even more. 🙂

Topic: Are companies in Europe and the US more innovative compared to companies in other parts of the world?

Another topic that I find fascinating.

Researching this specific topic could be done by looking at the e-commerce landscape in the US versus in China.

A great example would be to see Alibaba versus Amazon . These are two major players in the e-commerce industry that require innovation to survive.

But is the case that they’re just “stealing” products from each other? If so: who is the “criminal”? 🙂

You can almost go into every type of business that is being done by Chinese and American companies. It should be quite easy to spot a trend on where the innovation happens.

Topic: From some businesses that died out (Kodak, Blockbuster, etc.), what did they do wrong in terms of innovation? How could they have survived? Why did Netflix crush Blockbuster in the end?

You have to remember that a bachelor or master thesis doesn’t necessarily have to be about the future. Looking back at historical cases “with new eyes” can be just as powerful. Or you can apply this mindset to existing business cases.

E.g., “What does Facebook/Instagram/Amazon/Nike/Adidas have to come up with in regards to innovative products in order to keep their market position?”

When I studied some innovation courses as a part of my masters’ degree, we looked back at some of these companies that had failed. Many of them had failed because they refused to follow the technological development in their niche.

Ultimately, we looked at specific questions like:

When was the time that they should have taken action in order to “update” their business practices?
Who (which leader in the organization) should have called the shots?
What other companies took their place and customers – and how did they do that?

You don’t even have to answer all of these questions. Your master thesis can easily be just answering one of these questions about one single company. Believe me: it’s an awful lot to research if you find the right case. 🙂

2. Work culture in international businesses

When I went to university in Denmark, I was enrolled in a course called “ organizational behavior ”. At first, I thought it was boring. Frankly, I was more interested in numbers, business, and finance. But then I started to understand how important it is for a business that people are able to work together. And when I moved to Shanghai to work in a company that had 200 employees from ~30-40 different countries, I understood how vital it was that you are able to find common ground with people from different countries and cultures. I’ve come up with some interesting ideas that you could explore more within this sub-topic:

Topic: People from which countries are seen as most difficult to work with – and why?

This might be a controversial topic. And the findings are not something that you should necessarily publish in something public magazine. People can get really defensive if you try to label a group as “hard-working” or “not-hard-working”. Naturally so. However, there are ways to conduct this research without stepping on anyone’s’ toes. But if you get together a focus group of 5-6 people that have worked with the international business for 20+ years, I am sure they have some opinion of which nationalities might be more challenging to collaborate with. You should try to put together a focus group like that to get great results.

Documentary recommendation: “American Factory” on Netflix

This is a brilliant documentary that features how American people find it hard to work with Chinese people. And how Chinese people struggle to work with American people.

It’s a brutually honest, yet quite well-made documentary that you have to check out if you’re interesting in such a topic. I also believe it will help you to come up with some sub-topics that you can write about on your thesis:

Topic: Which problems do European/American companies face when they try to conquer a market that they have no experience in operating in?

Every year, thousands of companies attempt to push their products into South East Asian countries.

A lot of them fail .

And a lot has to do with lack of culture competences and local understanding of the market.

Contact a company that has (tried to) taken their products to a foreign country and interview them about the difficult process.

Reasons why Western companies fail when entering the Asian market

I have a Swedish friend that works in a company in Shanghai. This company helps Scandinavian businesses to conquer the Chinese market. I called him up and asked what most companies struggle with (which is a super nice topic for a bachelor/master thesis). He said the following ones are most likely to occur:

Lack of understanding of the needs of the Asian customer
Their logo not being “Asian friendly” (rebranding is needed!)
Lack of understand on how Asian people shop online and why they do it
Trademark issues
Unrealistic sales projections*

*= I often hear that “ oh, yeah…it lives 2,5 billion people in South East Asia. If we only get 0,1 % market share, we will become rich! “. And that is probably the most stupid thing you can ever hear a business person say.

Topic: Is it harder or easier to work among similar companies in a “coworking space”?

If you don’t know what a “coworking space” is, I’ll try to explain it in a few words. It’s literally a building with a lot of small businesses. Many of them are start-ups, and many of them are running IT-driven business (e-commerce websites, app development, etc.). The concept is meant to help businesses to connect with other businesses working on similar projects.

Wework is the type of company that gathers a lot of small, ambitious companies in one place. Many people tend to say that it’s healthy to be working “around people that you’re similar to”. Other people suggest it’s just a hassle and might even be confusing/annoying. You should find some companies that have gone from a traditional office to a coworking space. What did they gain? And more importantly: what did they lose? Are their employees more or less focused compared to before?

My own experience: Wework in Shanghai

I was on such a journey. Our company struggled a bit financially and needed to reduce cost. The solution was to move out of our (beautiful and large) office and move into WeWork. And I loved it. But I will also say it had the effect that I spent more time talking to people from other companies. That can be good and bad – it depends what you’re talking about. In addition to that, I also started to drink more beer (free flow beer in WeWork Shanghai!). 😉

You could look into things like:

Are employees more or less happy working in their own office versus a coworking space?
Should companies be afraid that their employees get “hijacked” by other companies in the same coworking space?
Overall productivity in the different office types

Topic: How do companies working in different time zones deal with working on the same projects?

When I was working in Shanghai, we had an office in Turin. It was a hassle. They had to come in at 08:00 to join our meeting at 14:00. And from there, you only had a couple of hours to work together before our day .

As you can see, it’s quite some distance between Turin and Shanghai:

It sucked out so much efficiency from various projects. I am certain that we lost a lot by having such a structure. But how much? And what did we really lose? Efficiency? Friendship? Was it easier to see conflicts across the offices (oh yes, it was!)? I would love to see someone writing a master’s or bachelor thesis on that.

This is a type of topic where you have to contact a multinational company and ask to interview them out. It would also be very interesting to see if different people in the organization would struggle with different issues in regards to the time zone different.

3. Online marketing/e-commerce

I’m an online marketing guy. I’ve been making and selling websites for the last 10 years. Therefore, I strongly considered writing one of these topics:

Topic: Will physical stores eventually die out?

It’s a real thing. People shop more online.

This trend has even gotten a quite interesting name: “ retail apocalypse ” (Wikipedia link).

Researching this topic would be super cool if you could find the right angle.

You can easily contact one retail store that struggles a lot – and then find their “online competitor” and compare what the different businesses think of the future.

That would be a super nice idea for a master or bachelor thesis in business.

Another interesting angle would to look into business that originally was 100 % physical stores, but have gradually turned digital. For example:

Grocery shopping
Photography shops (those where you went to get your photos printed out)

According to Spendmenot.com , about 10 % of US consumers happen to “now and then” purchase groceries online. About 20 years ago, that number was 0 %.

Believe me: such a change is quite dramatic for the overall grocery store market. Businesses need to change their mentality in order to survive – even those who sell milk and bread. 🙂

Topic: Is “floating office space” the future for e-commerce businesses?

As I do all my work online, it doesn’t really matter if I work in Copenhagen, Jakarta, or Washington. I mean; apart from the time difference. But is “floating office space” really a thing – or will it decrease the efficiency of workers? Deloitte has published an interesting article about “ mobile employees ”. It might be worth looking into if you’re interested in this topic. 🙂

Sub-topic: Home offices during the pandemic

Some evil virus spread around to the world. Business had to think of how they could be efficient while government lockdowns were getting serious.

If I was to write something on this topic, I would contact one of these companies and ask them:

Was it hard/easy to have your employees working from home?
What was the hardest part?

4. Marketing (“traditional marketing”)

About 50 % of my international business class wrote their thesis about something related to marketing. So I got a lot of input from my friends. But I was also able to come up with some ideas on my own.

Some of these topics is also something that I’ve come up with after I started to work profesionally.

Topic: Can you find some examples of how a company calculates the ROI of a billboard poster on a bus?

By using different tools, it’s very easy to calculate ROI (return on investment) of online marketing. In traditional marketing, it’s almost impossible. So why do companies keep spending money on billboards on Times Square New York as they have no idea on knowing what to gain from that?

Topic: Red Bull!!! The most interesting company in the world from a marketing perspective.

Red Bull is a lot more than a smi-decent energy drink. It’s also one of the most interesting marketing cases in the world.

Medium.com has published an article on why Red Bull succeed with traditional marketing. They say “no” to online marketing and “yes” to stuff like:

Buying football clubs and rebranding their shirts into “Red Bull posters”
Sponsoring every single ski athlete that can be found out there
Creating mega events in extreme sport, like this one:

I am not sure how easy it is to go into the Red Bull office and ask some of their employees to collaborate with you. However, there’s tremendous data to be found online without contacting them. You can easily write your master or bachelor thesis about their marketing model without being personally in touch with that company.

Topic: In the women fashion world: how much is branding and how much is quality differences?

A Gucci bag can cost about 1000-10,000 USD. Some random bags from H&M cost a fraction of that. How much of that price difference can be put in correlation with a quality difference? And why do women tend to always go back to the “big players” in the industry to buy luxury clothing and bags? This topic could be investigated in several ways. You could either ask the audience (women shoppers). Or you could get in touch with companies that either spend A LOT or those who spend NOTHING on branding campaigns. And ask them why they take different approaches to succeed in the women fashion market.

5. Environmental topics (sustainability/global warming & business)

Writing about environmental topics in business is not only “hot” these days. It’s also super interesting. Instead of writing topic suggestions, I’ll post some questions that will hopefully make you think:

What happens to the business of a farmer in Texas when global warming destroys all his crops every second year?
..and who is going to take the bill to keep that farmer alive? The US Government?
Is there an increasing market for eco-friendly products?
Does it really matter whether or not most people use eco-friendly toothbrushes, or is this just a marketing trick to sell people the idea that they are helping the world? (=Greenwashing)
To stop producing oil would be a fabulous achievement for the overall CO2 emissions. But it would be a disaster for oil-dependent export countries like Norway. What would it mean for the Norwegian economy if they stopped producing and exporting oil?

Just like Covid-19 hit all businesses globally, global warming and climate change will do the same. It just takes more time. But you can already now start to predict what will happen in the future.

Businesses that will particularly struggle on a warmer globe

At some point, we will all need to adapt. But these are some of the businesses that will see significant increased cost or even die out:

Less grapes give less wine. Once global warming really hits, farmers will struggle to make grapes.

International trade

Governments will make the flight tickets more expensive. It will also become gradually more expensive to take one product from one place to another.

People will (hopefully) use more public transportation. Car companies need to develop eco-friendly cars…or go bankrupt.

Businesses selling red meat

People don’t want to eat red meat anymore!

A study from the UK showed that 50% of all young Brits have tried to go vegan. Bizarre numbers!

Companies selling ski trips

Where did all that snow go? (This article in the Washington Post is frightening . It tells us that we have lost about 15 winter days if we compare 1960-1990 to 1990-2020. Obviously, that is bad news for the companies that promote ski and snowboard trips to Aspen.)

Pro-tip for your thesis : You could either investigate how these businesses have already seen a decline in revenue – or how they plan to cope with global warming in the future.

On the flip side, you have businesses that might grow as a result of global warming!

6. General business/international business topics

There are some topics that I considered and that I struggle to categorize. They might not be 100 % within my interest areas, which is probably why I didn’t look more into them.

Topic: Is our current education system wrong? Do we educate master students that end up doing something completely irrelevant for many years of their lives?

I have seen people go out with master degrees in marketing – only to work in a nursing home for the next three years. We might have come to the point where government-funded education isn’t the way to go. Back in the days, almost no one took education. These days, a master’s degree in business is something that’s almost required to even be considered as a trainee in a global company. Bizarre.

Video: Is our generation overeducated and unemployed?

Topic: Statistical analysis: Will the housing prices in large European cities ever go down?

The prices have increased since the 1960’s. And there’s been a high number of people who have said: “ oh yeah, they will go down eventually! ”.

But as more and more people want to live in the city center, when will this development stop?

In order to write such a topic, you would need to use some heavy statistical tool like SPSS. If you aren’t comfortable with that; skip this type of “financial projecting” thesis.

Topic: What happens to the customer satisfaction rate and prices when a private company overtakes a government-owned service?

Let’s take private hospitals in Scandinavia as an example. In the old days, they were all owned by the government. These days, some private-owned companies have built hospitals and “health check services” in the large cities. You can now get a health check the same day without having to wait. But it will cost you a lot of money.

How did that affect the overall customer satisfaction rate?
Is it “fair” that rich people can go and visit a private hospital while poor people have to wait in line?
Have the prices gone up? Or down?

Topic: Will there be a time where we go back to “cheap” smartphones? In which direction are the phone companies (Huawei/Apple/Samsung) taking us?

According to Statista.com , the average smartphone price has increased for many many years.

And it doesn’t seem to stop. Is it a market for cheap smartphones? Or does the market only want expensive phones with better cameras, better storage space and nicer design?

If you were to only write 10,000 words, I would dig deeper into one specific company.

For instance, what happened with Coca-Cola when they improved their logistics chain in order to become more eco-friendly? Ford Motor spent 11 billion USD (!!!) to start making hybrid and electric cars instead of fossil fuel cars – how did that impact the companys’ profile and revenue flow?

Instead of writing in general about one specific topic, I would dig deep into one specific company that tried to change their business practice because of CSR.

And obviously, it would be a major advantage to pick a company like Ford or Coca-Cola where a lot of the information can be found online for free. 🙂 Another solution could be to contact a company and ask to interview them.

However, it could be interesting to analyze some business that has taken a shift towards a more sustainable business model. See how that affected their profit in a negative way. For example some car company that previously made a lot of money making “normal cars”, but have been forced to make electric cars.

I mean: it’s potentially a bad example. But that’s the closest thing I can get to a proper proposal. 🙂

Quick recap:

– I contacted 5-6 companies that had taken their manufacturing back from Asia to Scandinavia. – Asked them a lot of questions about how that reshoring process helped (or damaged) their innovation. – And then I found an awful lot of theory on R&D and international business that I filled the thesis with. 😉

It came out quite successful (if I may say so…). But unfortunately, I do not have the thesis to share with anyone right now.

I was looking into the salmon industry in the Faroe Islands (I am studying in DK), both in terms of export and global warming. I am also interested in the phasing out of the Danish mink industry. Even greenwashing has caught my interest, but my difficulty lies in it being a matter of international business.

Neither of your two examples is bad. I would strongly recommend writing about something that you can relate to – and that hasn’t been written an awful lot about. Therefore, I would suggest writing about the mink industry in Denmark. That’s an extremely interesting case.

Greenwashing is very common in the car industry. However, you would NEVER get any of the car companies to talk about any of their marketing failures (believe me: you won’t). So it would be a thesis where you find objective information. Doing research on these companies is hard. No one wants to cooperate with a student that they would feel is stepping on their toes.

I presented my ideas to my supervisor, who only showed interest in greenwashing and disclosure. He suggested looking into greenwashing as a core subject – I have found studies with artificial companies and stakeholder perception. Would I be able to conduct a study in this way, and still maintain my international business area of study purely on the basis of it being an international phenomenon?

Yes, I think you would be able to get that overall international perspective on it.

You could even have a research quesiton related to different areas in the world:

E.g. Which countries have the end-consumers that are most likely to buy greenwashed products? Are there any government regulations on greenwashing anywhere in the world? etc.

I’m not sure which studies you have found. But I am sure you would be able to use those to write a great thesis. 🙂 Finding real-life examples might be hard in this case. And having companies work together with you might be even harder.

Well, I believe that maybe picking one large country and look at consumer behaviour there would be ideal. Maybe also dig into one specific market.

For instance, how has e-commerce changed the way people buy groceries in the US? It’s just an example.

Or you could look at how Chinas’ economy has grown largely because people in Europe and the US have decided to buy a lot of “cheap stuff online”. Alibaba and other Chinese companies have been profitable from this for decades already.

well. It might be good if you can get reliable sources. I wouldn’t trust the Chinese government sources on such a topic, but there are loads of other sources to be found online.

As long as the Chinese economy is a bit of a “blur” due to unreliable sources, it might be hard to choose for a master thesis.

The one with the housing prices is actually a good topic. Not because it’s super relevant nor interesting.

But because no one really understands the housing market prices. You see 50 % of the “experts” claim that the pricing will go down. Then the other 50 % claim that the housing prices will go up. In the end, 50 % of them will claim victory – and the other half will stay silent.

As a student you will have to do research assignments, write papers and hand in your final thesis before graduation. In order to succeed in this, you need to choose a good topic, formulate a researchable question, and make a realistic planning.

An effective tool for designing your research process in an effective way, is the SAGE Research Methods website . This website is user-friendly and helps you to break down your research process into smaller blocks. It also provides help with planning your research project.

Tips on how to choose a topic

Get inspired: Take inspiration from your required readings for a course you like, browse the books in the Wijnhaven Library reading room , explore topics in peer-reviewed international studies journals , or have a look at other theses by former students . Ask yourself: which question has not yet been answered? What information seems to be missing? What can you add to the discussion?
Brainstorm: Write down possible topic that comes to mind. These tutorials can help you with your brainstorm.
P ick something you like : If you have little influence over your thesis topic, try and steer your assigned topic in the direction you would like to take it to. This can be a specific discipline (sociology, anthropology, politics, linguistics) era (historical approach) or method (surveys, data sets, newspapers, personal stories etc).
Make sure you can make it into an academic treatise: A good number of students choose a thesis topic that aligns with their private interests. However, it can be a challenge to turn such topics into an academic treatise, because you may not have enough (1) relevant (2) academic and (3) accessible sources about the topic to base your argument on. Make sure that you choose a topic that you are passionate about, but that also has received scholarly interest, on which there is literature available, as well as other sources. If you start searching for sources in an early stage you can quickly determine whether your topic is in fact viable as a thesis topic or not.
Mind the size of your topic: it is important to narrow down your topic to a manageable size. Too few sources means you may want to expand your topic a bit. On the other hand, having too many sources on your topic means you need to narrow your topic down further. Tips on how to meet your deadline

Start with a general overview of the amount of time you have: When is your deadline? When can (and when should) you get started? How many hours can you realistically spend per week on this project?
Write down the steps you need to take from start to end: Go through this research guide to get an idea of how much time you need for your research. Don’t forget about things that might not be included here, such as spell checks, format checks, printing and binding etc.

Be realistic: A realistic planning will help you to set goals and avoid stress by impeding deadlines. Underestimating the amount of work needed to write a well-researched, well-written paper is the number one reason students experience a lot of overwhelm from the research process. Therefore, be realistic about the amount of work you can put in in a day.
Write down your daily top 3: Write down three achievable things you want to have finished by the time you are done for the day and start with the most important thing.
Don’t forget to take a break: It is important to put away what you wrote for a bit so you can revisit it later. Oftentimes, when you go back to your text at a later point, you see little inconsistencies that you overlooked earlier; or you have new insights to add to your argument.

A. Finding literature is not like a trip to the supermarket

Some students approach the act of gathering information for their research as if they were taking a trip to the supermarket; they expect to be able to find exactly what they need within a certain set amount of time. Unlike a supermarket trip, however, searching for scholarly information is difficult, and you do not always get the results you want. This is mostly due to the fact that it is easy to (1) overestimate the quality and availability of the sources you need, and (2) underestimate the amount of time and skill needed to find these sources amidst the millions of sources out there.

In other words, some students expect to find ‘perfect sources’ for their thesis topic – meaning; academic sources that ‘tick all the right boxes’ of their thesis topic – fully downloadable, and found with little effort with just a few keywords and clicks. In reality, however, the ‘perfect source’ likely does not exist, many sources you need will not be available digitally, it will take quite some time and effort to find these sources, and you will have to pick up some new search skills along the way. This often causes students to experience the ‘search’ and ‘access’ phase as the most frustrating, unsatisfactory experience in the whole research experience.

Frustration, coupled with a lack of time, makes it tempting for students to turn to less trustworthy or relevant sources because they are more familiar (Google), or more easily available (full-text search only). This, however, leads to an unbalanced and incomplete list of sources. It is therefore important to think about how you search; are your expectations realistic? What are your pitfalls when pressed for time or when something does not work out immediately? How can you avoid them?

The good news is that you don’t need to find a ‘perfect source’, and this brief video shows you why : ‘Good research isn’t about finding the perfect article that makes all the connections for you, it’s about finding information that helps you form your ideas, and tying it together yourself to form a cohesive argument.’

If the perfect source already existed, there would not be a reason for you to write your thesis or paper. As a researcher, your assignment is to get to know the literature on a topic, identify what is missing, and add to the existing knowledge with our own writing. Sage Research Methods helps you to approach your research project in exactly this way.

Second, there are many ways the library can help you get access to difficult-to-obtain sources and teach you how to search. Third, if you make a project plan early and manage your time, you should have enough time to search for the sources you need, thus avoiding a lot of stress and frustration.

B. First Step: Background Search

The best way to start your search is getting yourself more acquainted with the topic; you know some things about it, but there is a lot that you do not (yet) know. Background search can help you to identify important facts (dates, events, people, terminology) refine your topic (what aspect about this topic is it that truly interests you?), and give you additional information and tips on where to search (dictionaries, encyclopedias, databases). For your background search you can use Google, Wikipedia, your textbooks, bibliographies and encyclopedias .

At this stage of your research, important tools to start with are Google Scholar , which allows you to search and browse journal articles as well as the bibliographies that you can find in this Subject Guide for International Studies . The bibliographies are curated by a specialized staff and are more complete and systematic.

When doing background research you can start with a couple of keywords. You can use keywords from titles or abstracts. Specific keywords can narrow or broaden the amount of information you will find. Try out different (combinations of) keywords/synonyms to see what kind of information you get and which terms are useful. Learn more in these tutorials about keywords.

You can also use the so-called snowball-method to find literature on your topic: simply browse the bibliography at the end of a book or article that you found convincing to see if it contains other titles related to your topic.

C. Searching in the Library Catalogue

Try out different search terms when you start searching in the catalogue. The catalogue automatically searches for all of the entered search terms in one document unless you use OR. You can use NOT if you want specific words to be excluded. If you don’t know how to spell a word or it can be written in different ways, you can use the symbol # or ? (wom#n finds woman and women). When you have found a relevant item, you can also use the references or citations as new sources. It is not recommended to limit yourself to things only available in Leiden University by selecting ‘Leiden Collections’ instead of ‘All content’ in the search screen. See our catalogue tutorial .

D. Find Literature Elsewhere

Though Leiden University provides access to an extensive collection of literature related to International Studies, many more can be found elsewhere.

Worldcat : is the biggest world-wide search engine for library holdings. You can use it to search information about books, but also to locate the nearest library (inside or outside the library) that holds a copy. If any book or journal you found is unavailable in Leiden, you can either visit the holding library (which is often free for Dutch University Students) or request the item through (International) Inter Library Loan .

Recommended Online Search Engines

Google Scholar is Google’s search engine for scientific articles and academic books. It is recommended not to limit your search activities to Google, but it does offer a good starting point.

A. Digital and Paper Sources

If you have found a digital source in the catalogue that you wish to access from home you need to login via the library catalogue, using your ULCN credentials, and not via a publisher portal. You can also use the Get Access browser extension .
If you come across a source in the catalogue that is listed as “Online Access” or “Open Access” but you cannot get access, click the ‘report a problem’ option within the record.

You need a valid LU card for access in most buildings.
Leiden University Libraries consists of several library locations. Depending on your research topic, you may need to access physical books from these different locations.

B. Not available in Leiden?

There are a number of ways in which you can get access to materials that are not available at Leiden University Libraries.

How to get access to materials not available in Leiden

Look up the book or journal in Worldcat . If you enter your zip code, you can find the library nearest to you that has a copy, such as the Royal Library in the Hague or other University Libraries.
The Royal Library in the Hague offers a 50% discount for students for a one-year membership. Leiden University Students can apply for a library card free of charge at all Dutch Universities.
Request the item through Inter Library Loan (ILL ) or through International ILL .
Ask Leiden University to acquire the item : You can file a request for the library to purchase a book, access to a journal or database. All requests are considered by the relevant subject librarian, and a decision is made depending on collection policy, available budget and price of the item. Please keep in mind that, in case an item is purchased, it can take several weeks for the item to be shipped and processed.
Contact your subject librarian . If the above measures did not help, reach out to your subject librarian. It is possible that they know different means and methods within their field of expertise to obtain access to the materials you need.

A. Why do I need to evaluate scholarly publications – wasn´t that evaluated already?

Students are required to be critical of all their sources, including the ones you find in the library catalogue, academic databases, and those quoted in other scholarly publications. In today’s world, publishing and sharing information has become accessible to all, which also has made it easier to publish misinformation.

Academic information, at least, has put up a number of hurdles to tackle misinformation and disinformation from spreading, such as peer review . However, aside from the fact that these measures are far from failsafe , journals, books and authors can certainly be biased or prejudiced while working within the academic framework. It is your job as a scholar to be critical of all sources you use – academic or not – and train yourself in recognizing credible sources and using them in a critical fashion.

B. Popular & Scholarly

At the beginning of your student career at Leiden University, you may sometimes miss the difference between scholarly information and popular sources, and why this difference is important.

Media like YouTube videos, blog posts, or magazine articles can be tempting to use in a paper, because they (1) mainly focus on being entertaining instead of being informative, (2) use clear and easy to understand language, and (3) due to algorithms, are likely to confirm your pre-existing worldview and ideas. The goal of a research project, however, is to approach a certain problem in an open way, and embark on a research as an open-ended process. For such a project, usage of scholarly publications is crucial.

One of the main differences between popular sources and scholarly sources is the scientific rigor that lies at the basis of an analysis and argument, and transparent presentation of the used methods and sources. These are part of the scholarly format of peer-reviewed and annotated texts. Illustrative of the importance of this format is the fact that an op-ed written by a professor is categorized as a popular source, while an article in a scientific journal by the same professor is categorized as a scholarly text.

It is especially tricky when opinions of the author are presented as ‘facts’ that seem correct due to being based on cherry-picked data. If you are not yet confident in discerning between scholarly and popular sources, we recommend you follow a couple of tutorials .

C. Evaluating information

It is important you ask yourself a number of questions while reading a source, such as: Who wrote the information, why did they publish it, is there an agenda and when/where was it published? All of this comes before you can think about the text itself. This follows a technique used by professional factcheckers, called lateral reading , where you first consider the container of the text, before you look at the text itself.

The above is useful for information found both in print and online. For information found solely online there is an additional method, called the SIFT method . SIFT stands for Stop, Investigate the Source, Find trusted coverage, Trace claims, quotes, and media back to the original context. In many cases it will take about 30 seconds to quickly check whether for example a news report is true once you have trained yourself in the four moves of SIFT.

A. Reading and searching: two sides of the same coin

The most conventional method of discovering relevant authors and publications for your research is discovering them citations and references of other publications. We therefore recommend to make enough time to read your sources, and then do follow-up searches. When reading ask yourself: which authors are talking about my topic, what do they say, what books/articles did they write, which sources do they cite and how was the research conducted?

You may think that reading all the sources you find in order to do follow up search will take too long. However, in this part of the research process, you are only reading your sources to (1) confirm that they match your information need, (2) double-check that they are academic (3) not too old for your topic of choice, and (4) find references to other scholars and publication about your topic.

Tips on strategic reading

Scan : Quickly go through a text by reading just the titles of chapters, abstracts of papers, paragraph titles, or the first sentence of a new paragraph, and the conclusion. This will help you determine whether or not you want to read the source more in detail, and which parts you can easily skip.
Reading and Note making: You will have to read, process and remember information from a lot of different sources. To stay organized, it is important to make efficient notes while reading. Look here for a top five of critical reading techniques and a brief course on critical reading .
Don’t forget to write down where your information comes from ! If you are not sure where the information comes from when you start writing, you are at risk of plagiarism. Tip: The quickest way to make a short note when you are reading is taking the last name of the author + page. For example: Hall, p. 31. If you use multiple sources by the same author, add the publication year. (Hall, 2005, p. 31)

Rinse and Repeat

At this stage, you have found a good number of sources, read them, took notes, and likely found other publications authors and data that you have not found before. This marks the second round of searching for sources – look up that interesting looking book you found in a citation, find out what else the author of that book wrote, see if you can get it through Leiden University or other means, and... read! By repeating this cycle of read-search-access-read two or three times, you are very likely to find (1) the majority of relevant publications on your topic of choice, (2) the majority of authors writing about your topic of choice, and (3) a good overview of primary sources relating to your topic of choice. Only once you have followed this thorough and deliberate way of locating your sources are you ready to move forward.

B. Refine your topic

This is a good point in your research to revisit your topic and your research question. While reading you may have found that there is much more information available about your topic than you initially thought – or not enough. You may have found that your research question has already been dealt with in length by other scholars, while at the same time, another question that is even more interesting may have come to mind. Perhaps you would like to take your research into a whole different direction after doing some reading and follow up research? When you are refining your topic, allow yourself to be flexible. It is common to modify your topic during the research process.

Take some time to visit the checklist for your topic and research question again, and see if you need to make any chances. If you have already handed in your topic and research question to your supervisor, you should always inform them of any major changes you wish to make. In some cases, using primary sources for your research is optional, in other cases it is an obligatory part of your research. Students can use a variety of primary sources for their projects, depending on their topics. Different sources may require different research methodologies.

Central to all primary research projects is, however, that you systematically analyze a well-delineated corpus of sources. The delineation refers both to the source and the time-frame. For example, instead of analyzing how ‘the media’ reported on a topic, choose a specific media outlet (for example one newspaper) or set of media outlets (a well-delineated set of newspaper titles), and research the news reports over a specific time-frame (for example: how did the New York Times report on North Korea’s nuclear weapons program between 2010 and 2020). A similar systematic can be used when analyzing statistical data, CIA reports, the correspondence between Marx and Engels, etc.

A. Managing your research project

Once you have found, evaluated, and read all of your literature (for now) it is time to think about what you have read and to organize your findings. This can be a challenging phase in the research project. If you feel overwhelmed by the work you have to do, various actions may help: 1.) break down the project into smaller steps; 2.) make a time plan that enables you to find a good balance between reading, researching, writing, and free time; 3.) break down your thesis or paper into smaller blocks that you can separately work on.

Tools that can help you to break down your project into smaller parts and to manage time-planning are: the Sage project planner ; and the Open University’s Time Management Skills portal. B. Synthesizing; Interrogating the literature

Your thesis or research paper needs to clearly relate to the existing literature on a topic: you need to show who you (dis)agree with and what you are adding to the existing body of knowledge. This means that you need to identify at least the following three points (1) common themes between sources, (2) points on which the sources/authors (direct or indirect) disagree and (3) gaps in the literature (what is missing?).

This does not mean that you should just give a number of summaries of articles. Instead, it is important to compare and contrast, broaden the argument and give your own thoughts and conclusions. C. Footnotes, Citations and Citation Managers

For your thesis or research paper you are potentially going to refer to a large body of sources. Typing up all the footnotes by hand, and maintaining one consistent reference style is time-consuming. Therefore, it is highly recommended to use an electronic citation manager. Learning how to work with a reference manager is a new skill, but it will save you time in the long run – the more papers you write, the more time you save.

There are various citation methods. International Studies theses and papers are to use CMS as their citation style. The most important thing about using a citation style is consistency . Do not mix up the different styles and rules! If you are uncertain which style you should use for your paper or thesis, always consult with your supervisor. International Human Resource Management refers to activities that are designed to support organisations in managing human resources at an international level so that competitive advantage can be maintained at both the national and international level. The subject area includes understanding of culture factors, both in terms of beliefs and attitudes of international employees and in relation to international employment legislation. Studying the area provides insights into the way that corporate HR functions can contribute to international business strategy and build functional knowledge of the main developments in the management of expatriates and other forms of international management. Changing perspectives are crucial as more and more organisations operate on a global basis and have head offices in a home country and operational sites in host nations. Functionally this can involve expatriates but increasingly includes high usage of virtual technology to create links between home and host country operational sites. “MBS Outstanding Thesis” – The Best Final Papers of 2021

Last year, four further theses produced by our MBS graduates were selected for inclusion in ‘ MBS Outstanding Thesis’, a series of working papers. This blog article introduces the outstanding final papers in 2021.

Whether at bachelor’s or master’s level, a thesis is more than just the final step towards completing a degree: it can also make a significant intellectual contribution to academic and societal discourse. Students at Munich Business School are no exception, conducting high-level research as part of their theses. However, given that it is not usually possible to have these papers published in academic journals, Munich Business School’s Prof. Dr. Bartholomae launched a series of working papers entitled ‘MBS Outstanding Thesis’. In the fall of 2020, the first installment in the series recognized and published the master’s thesis of MBA graduate Jiaojiao Zhao .

At the start of the 2021/22 academic year, MBS asked its professors to put forward exceptional theses for inclusion in the series. Submissions not only required excellent grades but also had to exhibit innovative approaches and methods and provide novel insights. One bachelor’s and three master’s theses stood out in particular and have been awarded the designation “MBS Outstanding Thesis”. The authors hail from Europe, Asia and South America – the topics they covered are similarly diverse and as broad-based as the university’s curriculum.

The Implementation of Socially Sustainable Supply Chains in the German Natural Stone Industry Using the Example of Trade with India

In her bachelor’s thesis, Eva Maria Fröhlich investigated the social sustainability of supply chains in one of the few industries for which the recently passed Supply Chain Act does not apply. Focusing on the trade with India and using qualitative research methods, the author examined which concrete criteria and implementation strategies of social sustainability are relevant and currently beeing applied in the natural stone industry. She established the importance of strengthening the implementation of cooperative strategies and which criteria should be taken into account beyond the avoidance of child labor. Furthermore, she identified which communication strategies can be used to raise awareness among end customers and which legislative measures could provide essential support for socially sustainable supply chains. Case Study Concept for Microsoft to Support the Digital Transformation in German SMEs

Mauritius Freuding, who graduated from the master’s program in International Business , researched the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises in the field of cloud computing. During his analysis of cloud computing, he also found ways to make this complex topic comprehensible to people who are not domain experts. In addition, Freuding developed a method of outlining the benefits of cloud computing for small and medium-sized enterprises. Microsoft has since adopted Freuding’s method as its standard procedure for adapting cloud computing solutions to the needs of SMEs – a ringing endorsement of his innovative approach. Esports Sponsorship Effectiveness on Brand Association and Purchase Intent

Yi-Chun Chen focused on this barely researched but highly topical field for her thesis as part of the MBA International Management program (the former name of the MBA program at MBS, renamed MBA General Management in 2019). She surveyed almost 400 Taiwanese gamers and analyzed the data she collected using structural equation modeling (SEM). The findings? Attitudes towards the sponsor, the suitability of the event-sponsor fit, and the sponsor’s involvement in activities had a significant influence on gamers’ association with the brand and their intention to purchase a product from the sponsor. Brand association also plays an important role in forecasting purchase intention. The Emergence of Green Bonds as Innovative Financial Instruments

For his final paper in the MBA General Management program , Nicolas Penuela carried out a bibliometric analysis of the rise of green bonds as innovative financial instruments. He examined a dataset of 98 academic articles on green bonds published between 2008 and 2020. Using a qualitative filtration process, the MBA graduate initially analyzed controversial topics cited most frequently in the articles. Then, using a piece of software called Biblioshiny , he identified trends and gaps in green bonds research and divided his findings into three chronological phases, which allowed him to demonstrate how published articles developed over time. Finally, Penuela put forward a dynamic template for analyzing journal articles to help (future) academics to familiarize themselves with this new yet rarely used research discipline. Consumers have traditionally made purchase decisions at the store shelf, giving institutional brick-and-mortar retailers complete control over behavior, data, and preferences. This business model is now being digitally transformed: On the one hand, e-commerce, mobile shopping, sensor technologies, smart devices and artificial intelligence are but a few of digital innovations that threaten traditional retailers. On the other hand, digital technologies also present enormous potential for improvements and innovation within established, central operational routines. Managing artificial intelligence (AI) involves communicating, leading, coordinating, and controlling an ever-evolving frontier of computational advancements that references human intelligence in addressing ever more complex decision-making problems. Managing AI means making decisions about three related interdependent facets of AI – autonomy, learning, and inscrutability – in the ongoing quest to push the frontiers of performance and scope of AI in an increasing variety of sectors from human resources, to sales, healthcare, and others.

Students have the opportunity to work on thesis topics related to the management of artificial intelligence using an appropriate research method of their choice. Thesis projects are available as a bachelor and master thesis project for students in business administration (all specializations), information systems, computer science, and industrial engineering. The COVID-19 pandemic induced a massive disruption on societal as well as entrepreneurial life. Since “offline” multi-actor interactions have been inhibited due to containment measures, digitalizing related activities evolved as the medium of choice. The digitalization of multisensory experiential activities (MEA) such as culinary tastings or cooking workshops became emblematic for the disruption of the pandemic and initiated the genesis of an industry of digitalized MEAs. However, digitalizing these activities is challenging since their original participation stimulates a broad sensory spectrum that cannot be replicated completely by their digital counterpart. The question arises, how the quality of real-world multisensory experience can be provided through adequate digital design. In this context, also visionary technologies should be considered (e.g., holograph or VR technology) that exceed the technological affordances of current video-conferencing tools and might leverage the quality of multisensory experience.

Students can work on different topics related to digitalizing multisensory experiences using an appropriate research method of their choice. Thank you for your interest in writing your bachelor thesis at our department.

Every semester we supervise around 30 bachelor theses in the area of international management. A prerequisite for writing your bachelor thesis at our department is the participation and successful completion of one of the following courses: “Management in Emerging Markets” or “International Management” or “International Management: Doing Business in Emerging Markets”. Please note that you must have passed one of these courses before you apply for a bachelor thesis at the Department of International Management.

Every semester, we offer two application phases in which you may apply for a bachelor thesis at the Department of International Management. These application phases start approximately four weeks prior to the next assignment date. With the start of the application phase, you can join our StudOn group and inform yourself about the new bachelor thesis topics offered by us. As a next step, you will have to complete our Bachelor Thesis Seminar before applying for your preferred topics.

The Bachelor Thesis Seminar involves working through our Guidelines for Scientific Theses (to be downloaded from our website) as well as our e-Learning on Academic Working and Writing (more details in the StudOn group). After you have worked through our guidelines and the e-Learning, you will have to complete a short multiple-choice test.

Once you have passed the multiple-choice test, you can apply for a maximum of five different topics. On the assignment date, you will then receive an email from us which informs you if you were assigned a topic and which one of your five preferences you were assigned to.

After one topic has been assigned to you, you will have to work on and submit a short exposé (thesis proposal) to your thesis advisor, which outlines the research question(s), objective(s), structure and planned methodology of your bachelor thesis. The exposé has to be completed and submitted to your supervisor within two weeks. Afterwards, your advisor will provide you with a detailed and written feedback on the submitted proposal. If we accept your thesis proposal, we will register your thesis at the examinations’ office. From that moment onwards, you will have nine weeks to write your bachelor thesis and may consult with your advisor when needed.
