Websites – 365 REALLY Useful Websites You Just Gotta Check Out

I suppose if I were asked that question I’d find it difficult to narrow it down to one site. I have lots of sites that I really like for various reasons.

There’s no doubt about it, a good website can make a huge difference to your day to day life. I regularly use Google Maps for example to check out journey times, property locations and more, IMDB to check out if a movie is worth watching or my online banking site to manage my finances.

So I have compiled a list useful websites I think you might like to know about. I’ve avoided all the obvious sites (such as Amazon, Google, Ebay, the aforementioned Google Maps), however useful, which I’m sure you have already heard of (though I have mentioned a few other Google sites you might not have heard of). I’ve also avoided all the social media sites (we were talking about useful sites here, right?). That leaves 365 useful websites I’d like to share with you.

Yes, 365 of them.

I’ll tell you why 365 – I liked the idea of anyone reading this (who has little time) being able to just go to a site for the day. i.e. if you have very limited time, simply pick today’s date and check out the site for that day – it will work on any given day because it’s a list of 365 sites and I’ve picked one for each day. Pretty cool eh? Then you can come back and do the same again another day if you like.

(that plus I do like a challenge and basically bet myself I could come up with 365 of them to satisfy the above idea).

I’ve had a lot of fun (and just a tad more work than I thought it was going to be, but fun all the same) compiling this little list, I hope you have fun with it too…

Regional Variations

Most of these sites are global. Meaning wherever you live, they should work for you. Some though are either US or UK specific sites. There will likely be an equivalent useful website for your region, but I have only listed one for simplicity. In case there isn’t that site or a version of it where you are, don’t despair, instead, perhaps try searching on the name and see if our friend Google can find you something similar near you – or use one of the site’s I’ve listed here, alternativeto.net or similarsites.com to find an equivalent.

Obviously I have some favourites out of this list and have listed these useful websites for various reasons, some of them are very practical, some are cool, some are funny and some are very informative. So to give a bit more info on each one without taking much space, I have added the following key:

1. (or Jan 1) Mailinator – A superb, quick temporary mail facility that is easy to use and very practical. Use a mailinator address instead of your own for any website that needs an email address. Email auto-deletes, avoid spam, use for QA testing.

2. (or Jan 2) RulesOfThumb – Rules of thumb are often funny but also can be very practical. I already talk a bit about this website in this article: Rules of Thumb and also a little more about the psychology of rules of thumb and why they are very useful to us. Anyway, this site has loads of them.

3. (or Jan 3) Zoho – Really extensive suite of web based business apps, for example check out their fully functional online spreadsheet here: Zoho Online Spreadsheet but there is really a lot more on offer.

4. (or Jan 4) Fake Name Generator – What’s not to love about a fake name generator? Could be very useful if you want to play spies.

5. (or Jan 5) Bubbl – A free online mind-mapping tool. A mind map is a graphical representation of ideas and concepts. It’s a visual thinking tool for structuring information, helping you to better understand, remember and generate new ideas. You can even try it without signing in.

6. (or Jan 6) The Rasterbator – The Rasterbator makes wall art from any image. Enlarge images by splitting them across multiple pages which can then be printed to make huge wall posters.

7. (or Jan 7) SuperCook – Add your ingredients and Supercook instantly finds matching recipes from the most popular cooking websites, awesome!!

8. (or Jan 8) Memrise – Memrise helps you learn just about anything by combining science, fun and community. Learn more about it here or check it out for yourself.

9. (or Jan 9) IFTTT – This is a really impressive website. IFTTT stands for If This Then That and is basically a way to automate various events and actions between apps, devices and websites. I’ve written about this in the past too when I first came across the site (and was so impressed I wanted to share it) here: Automation II (aka Efficiency Hack #14: How to Supercharge your Efficiency with If This Then That)

10. (or Jan 10) Who Sampled – the world’s most comprehensive, detailed and accurate database of samples, cover songs and remixes, covering the entire history of music spanning over 1000 years and documenting all the fascinating musical connections along the way.

11. (or Jan 11) Slate – news, politics, arts, business and science with a host of high-profile contributors.

12. (or Jan 12) This to That – Because people have a need to glue things to other things. Tells you which glue to use to glue one material to another. The site also contains useful tips to bear in mind in the process (e.g. clamping makes a huge difference when gluing wood together). Personally I think they could have more choices in the materials (e.g. they just have one ‘wood’ but could list different types of wood: MDF, balsa, soft, hard) but still a very useful site.

13. (or Jan 13) The Khan Academy – I wrote all about the Khan Academy in this article: The Khan Academy but it’s basically an amazing free website with very well structured, free courses on a wide range of subjects.

16. (or Jan 16) Fuelly – Everything you need to know about your vehicle’s fuel consumption – understanding your fuel consumption and vehicle’s actual costs can help you save big money.

17. (or Jan 17) Combine PDF – A free and easy to use online tool that allows you to combine multiple PDF or images files into a single PDF document without having to install any software.

18. (or Jan 18) ZamZar – Have you ever wanted to covert files without the need to download software? Then check out ZamZar, the fre e online video converter, audio converter, image converter, eBook converter. No download or account required.

19. (or Jan 19) Urban Dictionary – An online dictionary of slang words and phrases.

20. (or Jan 20) Ikea Hackers – the original and best IKEA hacks website, check out contribution of IKEA hackers from all over the globe. They submit their creations, with the hope of providing alternative ideas on IKEA products. IkeaHackers is packed with lots of cool projects for your home or just for a bit of fun.

21. (or Jan 21) Bug Me Not – If you want to check out a site or get some data from a site, but don’t fancy sharing your login or personal information, pick one up from BugMeNot instead. BugMeNot shares logins, so you can get what you need and avoid spam or inbox invasion.

22. (or Jan 22) Music Map – Superb, just type in the name of an artist and music map will show you a ‘map’ of similar artists, continue clicking on artists to find other similarities. Wonderful.

23. (or Jan 23) Sleepyti.me Give the time you want to wake up, and Sleepyti.me will tell you when you should go to sleep. Or find out when you should wake up if you go to sleep now.

24. (or Jan 24) Filler Item – Enter the amount you need to see a list of products (including add-on items) that qualify for free shipping. Great for that annoying situation when you fall just short of their free shipping threshold.

25. (or Jan 25) 3-Minute Journal – an online application that allows you to track your inner work life. Powered by a brief daily journal entry, you can track accomplishments and emotional state, mark moments of gratitude, and benchmark yourself against others in the 3-Minute Journal community.

37. (or Feb 6) PicMonkey – a powerful, free web-based photo editor. It’s very good and I’ve used it lots. It does seem like they’re trying to push the paid options more lately but you can still use it for free and do lots with it.

Final Thought

There are clearly some great sites out there, and looking through this lot with some of the ideas and themes apparent from the list, ranging from beautiful simplicity to impressive programming, it is clear that we have only just scratched the surface.

Who knows what the next few years will bring.

With the evolution and availability of online devices, progress in research and marketing from big companies, the emergence of artificial intelligence and the ongoing sharing and collaboration between crowdsourcing projects and the open source community, I reckon there will be even more impressive websites cropping up over the next few years.

The internet is a big place, and there’s no shame in not having gotten around to exploring every last corner of it—but just in case you’ve missed out on some of the very best sites the web has to offer, we’re going to pick out a few lesser-known highlights from our travels that are well worth adding to your bookmarks.

2) Project Gutenberg

You don’t have to stay bound to the Amazon Kindle ebook store (or whatever store you get your ebooks from), because the volunteer-maintained Project Gutenberg has more than 59,000 digital tomes available completely free of charge—most of them are now in the public domain having had their copyright expire.

If you don’t have an ereader to hand, you can just read the books and stories through your browser, without even signing up for an account or anything complicated like that. With titles like Pride and Prejudice , Ulysses , and famous authors like Dickens and Conan Doyle, there are plenty of classics here to entertain readers.

3) Tunefind

There are all kinds of ways to identify songs in TV shows and movies—not least using an app like Shazam while the music is actually playing—but if you need to name a song you’ve heard after you’re home from the cinema or watched a Netflix episode, Tunefind has you covered. It has a huge database of movies and shows to scroll through, as well as lists of what other people are searching for.

Beyond finding lists of featured tunes and soundtrack songs, the site also provides links to find the music on Amazon, Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube, so you can quickly check you’ve found the song you’re looking for. If you’ve got some knowledge to share, you can contribute to the site as well.

4) Speedtest

If you need to know just how good or bad your internet connection is, Ookla’s Speedtest can tell you. What we like about this site, compared to others like it, is that you get ping times and upload speeds as well as the usual download speed results, plus a bunch of extra info like your IP address.

You can use the site as is without logging in, but if you do sign up for a free account, you can track speeds over time and in different locations, as well as compare your results against other users in your part of the world.

5) AlternativeTo

Sometimes you need to switch to a different app or website that’s like one you’re currently using. Or maybe you want to discover new apps and sites that are similar to ones you already use. In these scenarios and others like them, AlternativeTo can help.

It’s a huge crowdsourced database of alternatives to tens of thousands of apps and websites, so whether you’re looking for an alternative to Facebook or Gizmodo , you’ll find some handy pointers here. It also works as a resource for looking up more information on apps and sites as well.

6) OneLook Reverse Dictionary

An invaluable tool for anyone who does any writing—or indeed any communication of any kind—the OneLook Reverse Dictionary will tell you the word that’s on the tip of your tongue, as long as you can input a few words that explain its meaning. It can be hit and miss, but it’s mostly hits, as long as your input makes sense.

So whether you can’t remember the word for the urge to travel or the fear of clowns , the OneLook Reverse Dictionary can help you out. It provides a whole host of other useful features as well, including word definitions and synonyms.

7) The Internet Archive

A treasure trove of valuable resources, the Internet Archive covers websites, software, and more besides in its mission to build “a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts” on the web. It’s been going since 1996 and how has millions of images, videos, audio recordings and texts you can sift through.

Of most note is the Wayback Machine part of the Internet Archive, which lets you take a dip into the ancient history of many popular websites... ancient as in the early 2000s. Just enter a URL or some keywords to look up a site and reminisce, and make sure you check out some earlier versions of Gizmodo .

8) A Good Movie To Watch

Some evenings, you just want a good movie to watch—which is where agoodmovietowatch comes in. Run by a small team of writers and editors, it relies on human picks rather than algorithms to recommend “highly-rated, but little-known” movies currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Netflix.

“Netflix’s algorithm is a corporate algorithm,” says site founder Bilal Zou . “This means that it’s more interested in selling you new titles that Netflix spent money on rather than recommending what’s actually good... If you see it here, we’ve watched it and completely vouch for it.”

9) What Should I Read Next?

From movie recommendations to reading recommendations: What Should I Read Next? doesn’t mess around with any complicated rankings or input options. Instead, it asks you to name a book that you’ve recently read and enjoyed, then serves up recommendations of others that you’re probably going to like.

It works by pulling data from lists compiled by other users, and seeing which books often appear together—you’re essentially crowdsourcing your next book recommendation. If you like, you can register a free account and compile a list or two of your own.

We’ve flagged up Noisli before, but it continues to fly under a lot of people’s radars. It’s the best site we’ve found for streaming endless background noise, whether it’s the click-clack of a train on a track, the tinkle of coffee cups getting cleared away, or the sound of wind whistling through the trees.

You can either click on one of the presets—Random, Productivity, or Relax—or use the sliders to adjust the sounds and the sound levels yourself. If you hit upon a mix you really like, the site lets you save it for the future.

11) Unsplash

High quality, high resolution, royalty-free images are challenging to find on the web, but Unsplash is packed full of them. “The concept was born from the pain we had in finding great, usable imagery,” the site creators write . “Today, Unsplash is a platform fueled by a community that has generously gifted hundreds of thousands of their own photos.”

You can reuse these pictures for whatever you want, and you don’t even need to leave a credit (though it is recommended). Unsplash is particularly good for finding wallpapers for your laptop and phone, and while the search box is the best way into the site, it offers plenty of curated collections and editor picks as well.

Many people see Vimeo as little more than YouTube's smaller competitor. But the site has managed to capture a segment of the movie industry that's hard to find anywhere else. Home to a vast number of indie filmmakers, Vimeo is the place to find refreshing, art-house movies to stream on demand. Connect your SongKick account to your Spotify, Facebook, and Last.fm accounts, and you'll be kept up to date about when your favorite artists will be playing nearby (and the price of tickets). This is a simple, yet powerful way to ensure you never miss another live gig.

iTunes Store and Apple Music

iTunes has grown to dominate the music industry, comprising a huge portion of music sales across the planet. If you want to buy music (or movies, or audiobooks), iTunes probably has what you're looking for. It's also heavily intertwined with Apple Music, Apple's direct competitor with Spotify, where for a reasonable monthly fee, you'll have unlimited access to the entire music library, ad-free.

Reuters is the world's leading multimedia news agency, and has received multiple Pulitzer Prizes on international reporting. More importantly, however, according to Media Bias Fact Check Reuters is one of the the least biased news sources out there, offering objective reporting, while using very few loaded words.

Reddit is one of the most diverse media sites on the web, with content ranging from the serious to the absurd . It's also a great source of news, both locally and internationally, on whatever topic you like.

Google News

Google News is a news aggregator, pulling in the top stories from around the web. The site also uses Google's secret sauce of machine learning to turn up articles you're likely to enjoy, based on Google's statistical models of you.

Quartz is home to some of the most intelligent and thought-provoking journalism you can find. Its global-centric approach offers stories you're unlikely to find anywhere else. Hacker News

On the surface, Hacker News is a standard tech news aggregator. However, its technologically literate and involved community offers a unique and insightful perspective that's not available from the more broadly-aimed tech news sites.

FiveThirtyEight

538 is the product of statistician Nate Silver, who is known for almost perfectly predicting the outcome of the 2012 political election via some combination of sober statistical modelling and old-fashioned witchcraft. Online Privacy

Microsoft Office Online

Microsoft Office is now offering a free version of many of its popular apps. Among others, these include Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and OneDrive. These free versions are naturally less feature-rich than the paid version, but are a fantastic way to access and edit files from within your browser, even if you don't pay for the full Office suite.

IFTTT (If this, then that) is a powerful automations platform. From your free account, you can connect hundreds of services and apps that you rely on. Once connected, you can create "applets" that automate certain tasks, so you no longer have to do them manually. For example, you could have IFTTT automatically save email attachments to Google Drive. You could automatically publish your Instagram posts as a Tweet. You can even get an SMS alert to remind you when an event is due to start on Google Calendar.

Arguably the best to-do list manager out there, Todoist has both a free and paid version. Being able to add, schedule, and search for tasks with natural language is a huge plus. As are the many integrations that the app has with the automation engine IFTTT . With its cross-platform availability, quick syncing, and mass of useful features, Todoist will surely help you get more one.

Evernote is one of the world's leading, multi-platform note-taking apps, that's also available in your browser. It's a tool designed to help you capture anything, at any time. You can save your favorite articles, photos, Pinterest pins, recipes, notes, scanned receipts etc., to your account, and easily find these at a later date, even if you have thousands of them!

Microsoft's free note-taking app is, according to some, even better than Evernote. Its standout feature is the ability to customize the layout of your notes however you want. Each element within a single note can be dragged and dropped to any location. This means you can insert all sorts of media into a single note. Before you know it, you'll be running your entire life from this web app.

Google Keep

Google Keep is a simple, much loved note taking app that's far more lightweight than Evernote and OneNote. You can easily create and store notes, lists, images, and audio in your account. Destiny 2’s weapon sunrising is a huge reversal, though not terribly useful.

I’ve been going a bit deeper into the big changes that Bungie is making to Destiny 2 with The Final Shape , and the one that easily drew the most headlines is the reversal of weapon sunsetting on all fronts. This is actually a byproduct of a different decision, the idea to raise player power to that of your team leader in order for friends to be able to play together across all activities. But that meant whatever your loadout was, including sunset weapons. So here we are, no more power caps.

The problem? While it’s nice and nostalgic, and it’s fun to take your (non-deleted) sunset weapons out for a spin again, one of the reasons they’re able to do this at all is because so few of these weapons are actually useful in this day and age, and old monsters have been neutered at this point.

I have gone back and forth on weapon sunsetting over the years, as I sort of got it, and thought content vaulting was a much bigger deal. But now the landscape of the game has changed so much it doesn’t even matter.

The biggest issue here is power creep, where essentially every old favorite has been rendered less useful than modern slot rivals, either new weapons or even new versions of old weapons.

Take a beloved classic like Midnight Coup, which was issued in the fixed roll era, and is now available with five or six truly wild rolls as of Into the Light. It might feel good to fire Bygones or Go Figure at this point, but there are a dozen more useful pulse rifles by now.

One of the main issues is the addition of subclass 3.0 elements to weapons. You want things like Incandescent, Voltshot or Repulsor Brace on your light subclass weapons. Strand and Stasis weapons didn’t even exist in the sunsetting era at all, but now elemental synergy is hugely important.

I’d also argue that this slate of weapons suffers from an overreliance on kinetics, which used to be the entire top slot, but kinetic usage has fallen behind elemental weapons because of again, that lack of subclass synergy (minus a few standout exceptions, or some things in PvP).

Another fear used to be that a few specific weapons were too dominant and Bungie’s fear was that they’d have to be massively powercrept to be used less often. That’s sort of ironic now, given the above, but it’s also the case that so many of these weapons had their signature perks nerfed. We can quite literally see that with Into the Light. Things like Recluse, Luna’s Howl and Mountaintop have similar designs or perks, but they’ve been drastically nerfed. There are at least a couple open questions like how say, Revoker might be received, but all of these “problem” weapons (which I credit as a huge amount of the reason sunsetting happened at all) are more or less dead.

Bungie seems to realize this, and they’ve promised that lots of sunset weapons are going to still be reprised with new rolls. We’ve already seen something like Season of Dawn’s Perfect Paradox show up in a Final Shape trailer, for instance, and you can extrapolate out from there what else might be arriving at that same time…

Is it good Bungie did this? Yes. But in terms of how it will affect the game, the other changes like fireteam power level and account-based power level are much, much more substantive, to be sure.

Engineers at Georgia Tech have designed a process that converts carbon dioxide removed from the air into useful raw material that could be used for new plastics, chemicals, or fuels.

Their approach dramatically reduces the cost and energy required for these direct air capture (DAC) systems, helping improve the economics of a process the researchers said will be critical to addressing climate change.

The key is a new kind of catalyst and electrochemical reactor design that can be easily integrated into existing DAC systems to produce useful carbon monoxide (CO) gas. It’s one of the most efficient such design ever described in scientific literature, according to lead researcher Marta Hatzell and her team. They published details April 16 in Energy and Environmental Science , a top journal for energy-related research.

“All of my team’s research projects focus on decarbonization, which I care about because of climate change, but this one in particular has the opportunity to make an impact and move toward commercialization more quickly,” said Hatzell, associate professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering . “That’s why publishing our work is important, to help get this technology out into the real world.”

Typically, the DAC process involves pulling carbon dioxide out of the air using some kind of chemical or material that wants to grab the CO 2 molecules. To release that captured carbon — to store it underground, for example, or process it for productive reuse — requires significant energy and complicated, expensive systems. Along the way, those systems usually lose some of the CO 2 , often only using half of the carbon they’ve removed from the air or less.

Hatzell’s team is focused on improving an approach that uses a liquid alkaline solution called KOH to capture the carbon in a DAC system. The KOH turns the gas CO 2 into bicarbonates, which eventually have to be separated again.

The Georgia Tech design avoids that expensive, energy-intensive step altogether.

Working with Jihun Oh’s lab at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, researchers created a new nickel-based catalyst and paired it with a bipolar membrane electrode assembly. Their setup uses electricity to extract CO 2 from the bicarbonates right next to the catalyst, which then converts it to carbon monoxide gas.

That’s the secret sauce of the system designed by Hatzell, postdoctoral scholar Hakhyeon Song, and Ph.D. students Carlos Fernández and Po-Wei Huang: It combines two steps into one.

“We're capturing the CO 2 into carbonates, which is a spontaneous process and doesn’t take much energy. And we’re getting rid of the desorption process and all of that energy expenditure,” Fernández said. “We save about 90% of the energy in the capture process, and about 50% of the capital cost.”

Their setup also is extremely efficient at using all of the CO 2 that moves through the reactor, according to Song. This is vastly better than systems that keep the carbon dioxide as a gas throughout the separation process.

“We’re twice as efficient. Our CO 2 utilization efficiency is almost 70%, but the gas-phase system is 35%,” Song said. “The maximum CO 2 utilization in gas-based systems is theoretically 50%. But in our case, our maximum efficiency is 100%.”

In another important advance, the team’s catalyst works well in an acidic environment, which has been a limitation of existing systems using bipolar membranes. When the reactor layer with the catalyst turns acidic, another chemical process called a hydrogen evolution reaction occurs that competes with the reaction that reduces CO 2 to CO. The new nickel-based catalyst suppresses this interference.

Producing carbon monoxide from the CO 2 scrubbed from the air is a complicated, intensive process. But if done economically, the resulting raw material could be linked to existing chemical processes and turned into new useful products.

Making those connections is next on the team’s plate. CO can become the basis for plastics, important industrial chemicals like ethylene, and maybe even jet fuel one day.

“That's why we chose CO,” Fernández said. “Other products are harder to make, and CO is a good base for any carbon chemical. You can go from CO to almost anything through thermochemical processes.”
