Nepal is a small landlocked country located in South Asia. Despite of its small size, Nepal is rich in natural beauties and resources. The tall mountains, beautiful waterfalls, rivers, lakes and springs are the key natural attractions of Nepal. Nepal is also rich in cultural and traditional values. Thus Nepal is a perfect blend of both nature and culture.

Tourism is the fastest and largest booming industry in the current scenario in Nepal. Though tourism sector was badly affected post covid, but it is reviving in a good pace. Before the pandemic, Nepal had prepared for the year 2020 as the tourism year marketing internationally with the slogan ‘Visit Nepal 2020’. But due to Covid, it couldn’t succeed as planned. But now(post Covid), the interest of people to travel and adventure is increasing, so Nepal has been a perfect spot of the tourists for traveling, sightseeing and adventure.

There are hundreds and thousands of tourist destinations in Nepal. In contrast to the natural beauties: the mountains, rivers, lakes of Nepal have allured a lot of people. Mt. Everest, Annapurna range, Pokhara, Mustang, Illam, etc are some of the top destinations of tourists for travelling, adventure and sightseeing. There are many trekking and riding trails for hiking in Nepal.

Nepal has a lot to offer for the people who are interested in culture, tradition and history. Nepal is a great place for people following Buddhism as Nepal is birth place of Lord Gautam Buddha. People believing in Hinduism come to Nepal to visit Pashupatinath temple.

People visit Chiwan National Park which is popularly known for one horned rhinoceros and Bardiya National Park which is known for tigers. Gorkha, Kathmandu valley can be a good choice for exploring history, culture and tradition of Nepal.

Tourism is a good booming sector in Nepal with an unleash potential. But there are many things that should be checked on to make Nepal a number one destination for the tourists. Lodging and fooding should be of good standard and reasonable price. We must not misbehave with the tourists. As we have a slogan ‘Athiti devo vawa’ which means guests are gods and should be treated like gods. Places with a good capability of attracting tourists should be well maintained and promoted so that we can benefit from the place.

Trek through the Himalayas

Nepal is synonymous with trekking : trips are easy and inexpensive to organize and there is a mind-boggling range of trails, from easy self-guided day hikes to epic multi-week expeditions. They provide both dramatic Himalayan scenery – Nepal boasts eight of the 10 tallest mountains on Earth – and a fascinating insight into the diverse cultures of the highlands.

The most popular treks are the Annapurna Sanctuary, Everest Base Camp , and Langtang Valley routes, but there are lots of other less-well-trodden options, too.

Sample Newari cuisine in Kathmandu

As befits one of Asia’s leading backpacker hubs, the Nepali capital, Kathmandu , has an impressive variety of street food vendors, cafes, bakeries, restaurants, bars, and pubs serving food from across the globe, as well as local standards such as daal bhaat tarkari (dal, rice, and vegetable curry) and momos (steamed or fried dumplings).

But don’t leave without trying the traditional Newari cuisine of the Kathmandu Valley . Although most Nepalis are vegetarian, meat – including buffalo, goat, and wild boar – features strongly in many Newari dishes. Admire the Janaki Mandir

The Terai city of Janakpur – a major pilgrimage destination thanks to its association with Hindu epic the Ramayama – is home to one of the most eye-catching temples in Nepal. Built in the baroque Mughal style and boasting a wealth of domes, turrets and arches, the marble Janaki Mandir is dedicated to the goddess Sita, who is believed to have been found as an infant on the site.

The best time to visit is in the early evening when the temple is illuminated with lights and hymns drift gently through the air.

Spot one-horned rhinos in the Terai

By the early 20th century, the greater one-horned rhino had been hunted to the verge of extinction in the Indian subcontinent, but dedicated conservation efforts have since helped the species to recover.

These majestic creatures can now be spotted in the forests, marshes, and grasslands of Chitwan and Bardia national parks in the Terai – a stretch of lowlands running the length of southern Nepal – alongside tigers, wild elephants, gharial crocodiles, and hundreds of species of birds.

Climb up to Swayambhunath

High on a hilltop in the west of Kathmandu, Swayambhunath is a glorious Buddhist stupa, a dome-shaped monument featuring the painted eyes of the Buddha, topped with a gilded spire and surrounded by a complex of temples, shrines, rest houses, and statuary.

In the morning and evening, devotees climb a long stone stairway to the lofty site to make a kora (ritual circumnavigation) of the huge stupa, which is thought to date back some 2000 years. With commanding views across the city and beyond, it is a wonderful spot to enjoy the sunset.

An extensive network of back roads, tracks, and trails – some of which have been used for centuries – allow mountain bikers to reach little-visited parts of Nepal. Although you can strike out independently – rental bikes are widely available in the major tourist centers – many routes are unmapped and best explored on a guided tour, particularly if you’re an inexperienced cyclist.

The two-day Scar Road from Kathmandu, six-day Muktinath to Pokhara , and 12-day Jomsom to Lo Manthang routes are all excellent choices.

The Kathmandu Valley’s fringes are dotted with villages and towns whose elevated locations offer sublime views of the Himalayas, particularly at sunrise. They include Nagarkot , Dhulikhel , and Daman, which are all easy to reach from Kathmandu.

Many of their guesthouses and hotels are oriented to allow you to gaze out at the world’s highest mountains from the comfort of your room or balcony, though there are also numerous viewpoints that can be accessed for free or a small fee. To maximise the likelihood of clear, cloud-free skies, visit from October to December or from March to April.

Visit the birthplace of the Buddha

In 563 BCE, Siddhartha Gautama – who later became known as the Buddha – was born in Lumbini in the western Terai. The spot is now marked by the Maya Devi Temple , which is named after his mother and is thought to date back some 2200 years. Alongside Bodhgaya in India, where the Buddha found enlightenment, it is the holiest site in Buddhism.

The Maya Devi Temple is part of a huge complex that includes a range of temples built by Buddhist communities across the globe, including China, Cambodia, and Thailand, as well as gardens, a museum and cultural center, and a gleaming peace pagoda.

Kick back in Bandipur

A picture postcard bazaar town perched on a ridge, Bandipur is the perfect place for a spot of idle relaxation. It is packed with attractive 18th-century townhouses, several of which have been turned into elegant boutique hotels, guesthouses, and homestays.

Although you could head out for a walk, go rock climbing or even visit a nearby silkworm farm, it’s hard to beat simply ordering a coffee and watching the world go by or losing yourself in the superlative Himalayan views.

Go white water rafting

Although most famous as a trekking destination, Nepal also offers world-class white water rafting (and kayaking), with plenty of options for novices and pros alike. For an economical introduction, take a one- or two-day trip along the Trisuli river, which is close to Kathmandu. 

Alternatively, test yourself on the more challenging Bhote Kosi, Nepal’s steepest rafting river, which surges down from the Tibetan border, or try a week-long journey through the wilderness on the Sun Kosi or Tamur rivers.

Explore the Kathmandu Valley’s medieval architecture

The historic quarters of Kathmandu and the neighboring cities of Patan (also known as Lalitpur – “City of Beauty”) and Bhaktapur are famous for their evocative medieval architecture. Despite being badly affected by the devastating 2015 earthquake, their Durbar Squares (royal plazas) are still lined with well-preserved or restored palaces, temples, shrines, and pavilions, many of which are open to the public. 

They collectively form a Unesco World Heritage Site, alongside several Buddhist and Hindu temples and monuments in the Kathmandu Valley, including Swayambhunath.

Go birdwatching in Koshi Tappu

In the eastern part of the Terai, the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is a birdwatching hotspot. At least 527 avian species can be spotted in its wetlands and grasslands, many of which are rare or at risk. They include the swamp francolin, the Bengal florican, and the red-necked falcon.

You may also see some of the last surviving arnas, endangered wild water buffaloes with giant sets of horns.

Paraglide in Pokhara

For adventure sports enthusiasts there are few better places on Earth than the chilled-out lakeside city of Pokhara. Nestled in the shadow of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges, it offers everything from trekking and rafting to bungee jumping and canyoning.

Pokhara is also an incredible place to go paragliding: after taking off from the nearby peak of Sarangkot and soaring through the azure sky on thermals you’ll be rewarded with mountain views of heart-stopping beauty.

Learn about Tibetan Buddhism in Bodhnath

The Kathmandu Valley village of Bodhnath (also known as Bouda) is home to a thriving community of Tibetan Buddhist exiles. Its focal point is a monumental whitewashed stupa, which was built around 600 CE and draws pilgrims from far and wide. The surrounding streets and plazas are filled with monks and students in maroon robes, strings of colorful prayer flags, and stores selling butter lamps.

Numerous monasteries and institutes in Bodhnath run courses for foreign visitors on Tibetan Buddhist theory, practice and meditation, ranging from introductory seminars to advanced study programs.

Stop off for tea in Ilam

In the far east of Nepal, the lush hills around the pretty mountain village of Ilam produce exceptional tea. They share the same climate and geography – though not the scale or international renown – of nearby Darjeeling, which lies just across the border in India. Visiting the tea gardens, which are hives of activity during the April–November picking season, and sampling a brew is a must.

Nepal is known for being one of the most famous travel destinations in the world. With thousands of tourists visiting the county every year, Tourism in Nepal has soared to new heights. Nepal has become a popular tourist hotspot. The capital city of the country, Kathmandu and the city of lakes, Pokhara are the top cities in the country to see a sharp increase in the number of tourists in recent years. With trekking routes to Everest and Annapurna flooded by foreigners throughout the year, the trekking has added a boost to increase the tourism market. The History of Tourism in Nepal began, after the first successful expedition of Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary to reach the top of Everest. Before 1951, tourism was not an option for the country as the Rana Regime had banned any foreigners from entering the country. It wasn’t after the successful ascent of Everest that tourism had started to bloom in Nepal. In 1956, the National Planning Council on Tourism was established. With an addition to the National tourist Development Board establishment in the same year and Royal Nepal Airlines Corporation starting its services in 1959, the tourism just exploded in Nepal.

In the 1960’s and early 1970s hippies started to notice Nepal as the place to get an abundant amount of marijuana and hashish. The government started to notice the event and banned the selling of marijuana and hashish in 1973. This became a turning point in the tourism sector of Nepal. More and more people started to visit the country for its traditional culture and religion. With a high inflow of refugees from Tibet Buddhism started to become popular. As the community became diverse, in the 1980’s Nepal tourism board formally started to promote Nepal as a great destination for traveling. After the 2000’s the country is seeing a rise with the tourist inflow every year. Thousands of travelers are coming to Nepal to explore its pristine natural beauty and to observe the vast and rich cultures and traditions that it holds with its diverse religious communities.

Development of Tourism in Nepal

The popularity of tourism surged in Nepal after the country started to better care about its natural atmosphere(Resources) which helped in the Development of Tourism in the country. Nepal was recognized as the world’s second-richest country in water sources. This helped in promoting cities like Pokhara(known as the city of Lakes). With the capital bustling with tourists because of the one and only international airport (Tribhuvan International Airport) in the country, Kathmandu started to become the center for setting up hotels and restaurants to receive the foreign guests. Everest was already the top destination for all travelers visiting Nepal but began to change as new trekking routes started to come into operation. Pokhara made a big contribution by promoting trekking adventures around its city and surrounding mountain valleys.  An example is a famous trek to the base camp of Mt Annapurna(8091m, 26,545ft).

With the Everest trails flooded by tourists and travelers, new exploration options to some of the world’s highest mountains became popular. Actually, there’s more. 8 of the top 10 highest peaks in the world lie in Nepal. So you can see why the trekking became a famous tourism boot for the country. The Scope of tourism in Nepal extends from the east to the west, from the north to the south, from the air and to the land. With many rivers, lakes and water sources in the country, rafting and boating have and can become a better attraction to foreigners. The paragliding, hot air balloon, bungee, and Zipline through the air are seeing more interaction for foreign adventurers. Mountain biking, trekking, city tours, and site visits, and jungle safari is definitely one that brings excitement to travelers and foreigners by connecting them with the local traditions and culture and with the pristine natural atmosphere of Nepal. All of this plays a vital role to increase the scope of the tourism industry throughout the country. This has to do with its geographical location, its culture and traditions, landmarks, and probably the most important factor, is its natural beauty. Nepal has many forests, mountain valleys, and river trails. This is a major attraction to tourists who seek out quiet time with their families. Many travelers like to explore the nature and culture of the people. Nepal offers 101 ethnic groups with over 92 different languages. With vast culture and traditions, it is always a treat for the foreigners to observe the life of different communities in Nepal.

The mountain valleys hold the high snow peak mountains. With the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, China the virus has spread throughout the world. With travel bans and countries in lockdown, no one wants to leave their home. This has affected the tourism industry very hard. With the loss inflow of tourists, many organizations, companies, and businesses in the country are having a hard economical downfall. On March 30, 2020, the total cases for the coronavirus reached a total of 740,000 people who tested positive. It would have been easier if there was a cure for this pandemic. However, as the virus is never seen before type, the cure is still not available. The total number of people dead in the world crosses 35000. In Nepal, 4 deaths were confirmed with no accurate data of the positive number of cases reported. With such a situation in the world, travelers were banned from going out of their country. Even in Nepal, quarantine has become a usual activity since March 24, 2020. With every business that depends on tourism for a proper income generation, it all came to a Halt until further notice.  

Tourism in Nepal Statistics 

Tourism in Nepal can be estimated by some statistical data. Let us take a look at the year 2018. In this year, the ranks for the tourist with respect to their country are,

If you take a look at their purpose for visiting, 703,843 people visited the county for holiday, 187,692 for pilgrimage tours, 169,180 for trekking, and 112,357 people for other reasons. Travel Story - What an amazing trip I had

Nepal is perhaps one of the best countries that I have visited. It has everything, from amazing natural diversity, wildlife and cultural ethos to the awe-inspiring Himalayas. Nepal is a country of many wonders with treasures that never fail to amaze and inspire me. Recently, I had the chance to visit Nepal. As much as Nepal Treks are fun, this time- I wanted to really dive deep into the historical and cultural aspects of the country. After all, Nepal has ten UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and despite its growing modernization in places like its capital Kathmandu and other major cities, the tenor of cultural spirit is still alive and thriving in almost all corners of Nepal- sometimes even mingling along with the rapid growth of cities and their rapid in-migration. Speaking of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal is like any other, always bustling with life and energy and chaotic pandemonium. When I arrived at the Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu, I was greeted by my guide. I had decided to take the aid of a local Travel Agency who assisted me in my touring endeavor. Nepal Hiking Team my travel agency, had arranged for a guide for me to pick me up from the airport and with my Hotel transfer.

Going a little sideways with my continuality here, but I would definitely recommend hiring a local travel agency while visiting Nepal, especially if it is your first time. It can be a daunting task to visit a new country, and Nepal is no exception. That is why hiring a travel agency is always beneficial. They arrange everything for you, leaving you with free time to do as you please instead of worrying about permits, transport or even accommodation and meals. That was the case for me as well with Nepal Hiking Team, who arranged and planned my trip brilliantly.

First on my tour list was the heritage sites of Kathmandu itself. A bit about Kathmandu before we delve into its cultural and historical treasures; Kathmandu is the largest city of Nepal, with a population of about 1.5 million people. Historically termed as "Nepal Mandala", Kathmandu has been the home of Newari culture since medieval times. The Newari culture is definitely seen in various aspects f the city, from temples, architectural style of buildings, food and even celebrations and festivals. The historical sites of Kathmandu manifest the Newa architecture quite beautifully. Moreover, Kathmandu has been, for many years, the epicenter of the Himalayan country. It has a multiethnic population, and has many Buddhist and Hindu religious sites, including the heritage sites.

As such, the Kathmandu city hosts four major UNESCO Sites. In the Kathmandu Valley, there are a total of 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The UNESCO Sites are distributed among the valley closely to one another. That makes the Kathmandu valley have one of the densest concentrations of UNESCO World Heritage Sites that are situated alongside each other. Within the city itself, the four major sites are the temple of Pashupatinath, the Swayambhunath Stupa, the Bouddhanath and the Kathmandu Durbar Square.

My first site was the holy Hindu temple of Pashupatinath. A major sacred Hindu temple, Pashupatinath is located on the banks of the Baghmati River. My guide informed me that the temple served as a seat of the national deity, Lord Pashupatinath. Inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list on 1979, Pashupatinath is a large complex with many smaller temples, ashrams and sculptures. When I visited Pashupatinath, I saw many worshippers about, many with bright red tika on their foreheads. My guide said that during the major festival of Maha Shivaratri, Pashupatinath Temple was swarmed by many pilgrims from all over the country, with many from India as well. I also saw many Sadhus in the temple, with their faces covered in ashes and donning bright yellow robes with matted hair. I was also informed that the temple is also where the Hindu people performed their sacred cremation ceremony by the banks of the river.

The pagoda style of the Pashupatinath temple is something that I was to come across many times during my tour. The beautifully crafted two level roofs of the temple are balanced on wooden rafters which are decorated with amazing carvings. With the atmosphere rich with burning incense, the temple was quite exotic and reflected the cultural beauty in the constant peal of its temple bells.

My next UNESCO Site was the Kathmandu Durbar Square. One of the three Durbar Squares of the Kathmandu valley, the Kathmandu Durbar Square holds the palaces of the old Malla and Shah Kings of the Kathmandu city, along with many temples, old buildings and monuments along with sculptures and statues of Gods. Several buildings of the Durbar square complex had collapsed in the 2015 earthquake, and the renovation work was being done. Along with the old buildings, the outskirt of the complex also held many fine cafes and restaurants. The place was as busy as ever, with small vendors selling spices and flowers and shops of Thanka paintings and Nepali handicrafts that ranged from brass and copper jewelry to traditional Newari masks and Nepali paper Mache. The complex itself was beautiful. Despite the damage done by the earthquake, it is easy to see the wonderful Nepali craftsmanship on the temples and buildings of the Durbar Square. The tentatively ornamented doors and windows of the temples and the finely tuned and crafted sculptures of the various gods seemed lively. It was not hard to imagine how it must have been in the medieval times. The openness of the complex and being surrounded by such majestic culture and architectural beauty had me in a trance. The people going about their way, with the looming temples and the giant statue of the God, with flocking pigeons and the bustling atmosphere seemed to breathe life into the area.

After a quick lunch of delicious momo in one of the many restaurants at the Durbar Square area, I headed out to the Swayambhunath temple- also known as "the Monkey temple", an ancient religious temple atop a hill west of the city. At the entrance of the temple, I saw three giant statues of Buddha, all decorated quite beautifully, along with gumbas and smaller stupas which were also quite elaborately decorated and painted in the most intricate colors. My guide told me that each morning before dawn, hundreds of Buddhist and Hindu pilgrims ascend the long steps from the eastern side that lead up the hill and begin a series of clockwise circumambulations of the Stupa. After I had climbed the steps up to the Stupa myself, I was rewarded with the most breathtaking sight of the panoramic city, which seemed to be alive.

After a tour of the temple complex, my next destination was the Bouddhanath Stupa. As I was in the car being driven to Bouddha, I also got a chance to experience the hectic traffic of the city; it truly is quite fascinating! Bouddhanath is the largest Buddhist Stupa in Nepal. When I reached Bouddhanath, the beautiful dome of the Stupa loomed up in front of me like a giant. The sire of the Stupa was decorated with many colorful prayer flags and the serene eyes of the Buddha looking out in four directions were quite majestic in the evening sun. The sparse distribution of the twilight clouds above the Stupa gave off a tranquil feel to the whole place. There were many people around here as well, sitting by on the base of the Stupa and enjoying the evening with family and friends. It was a lovely site to end my first day of the tour.

My tour of Nepal continued with my next destination- Pokhara. The lakeside city of Pokhara is said to be the tourism capital of Nepal, and it is not difficult to see how so. The city is located right next to the beautiful Phewa Lake, and is also quite close to the Annapurna Himalayan range whose majestic sights I saw as I entered the city. Many prefer to drive to the city, but my agency had arranged for a flight to Pokhara from Kathmandu, which took about 20 minutes.

Pokhara is often the starting point of many Annapurna Treks, and thus, you can see lots of tourists in the city, especially around the lakeside area which is riddled with various restaurants and shops catering to tourists. Furthermore, there are also numerous temples and gumbas in the city, with many temples serving as combined places of worship for both Hindus and Buddhists, much like the Swayambhunath in Kathmandu. One of the first places that I visited in Pokhara was the Bindhyabasini Temple, followed by the World Peace Pagoda, a.k.a. "the Shanti Stupa". I got a beautiful panoramic view of the Annapurna range, Pokhara city and Phewa Lake from the pagoda.

Pokhara had many attractions as well, like the Mahindra cave and the Davis Fall. The all natural setting of Pokhara contributed to its large influx of tourism, both from within the country and outside. During the evening, I leisurely strolled around the lake side area, enjoyed a tranquil boat ride on the lake and visited the Tal Barahi temple- which is located right in the centre of the Phewa Lake. I had the constant view of the Annapurna range, and the beauty of Pokhara lulled me into a beautiful expectation of visiting Sarangkot- a vantage point near the city.

In the early hours of dawn the next day, I was driven to Sarangkot. I finally get why people fall in love with sunrises now; as I stood on the hill station at Sarangkot, I saw the rising sun from amidst the Annapurna Himalayas. It was majestic and I will never forget the moment. The panoramic view of the lovely Pokhara city also provided me with a postcard perfect picture.

My next much awaited stop on my Nepal Tour was Lumbini- a Buddhist pilgrimage UNESCO World Heritage Site. The birthplace of Lord Buddha, Lumbini had some of the most amazing collection of monasteries, each unique and artistically different from one another based on their construction by different Buddhist nations. I visited the holy Mayadevi Temple, and the Puskarini Pond. The atmosphere at Lumbini is that of a deep religious serenity, the monasteries are quite fascinating to explore, which I did on a rickshaw. I saw little monk children running around in crimson robes, and had a marvelous time exploring the complex. The heritage site captures the Buddhist spirit in its peaceful surrounding, and its various Buddhist art and architectural treasures.

My last stop on my Nepal Tour was Chitwan National Park- one among the two national parks of Nepal enlisted under the UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site. Famous for its jungle safaris, I knew that Chitwan was going to present me with the natural side of Nepal, and I was right! Presenting me with a wild taste of the wilderness, I experienced Chitwan’s wide expanses of natural landscape and woodlands. The lush forests of Chitwan National Park and its parameters consist of many wild animals and rare floral abundance along with ethnic villages and old traditional settlements of the local people. Perhaps one of my most memorable moments was riding an Elephant through the woods! I explored the ethnic Tharu villages and visited the national park’s animal breeding centers. With a relaxing and euphoric nature walk along the Rapti River, I was surrounded with the ambiance of exotic birds filling up the sound of the air with their chirping.

One of the best times while I was at Chitwan was the Elephant bath. I got in the cool waters of the Rapti River and helped the elephant bath (or more specifically, got sprayed by the lovely creature!). The elephant sprayed a shower of water out of its trunk and I was in love! The excitement of playing with the elephant in the water brought out the inner child in me, and left me with a smile on my face and my soul feeling lighter.

Nepal really is a wonderful country with amazing features and beauties. It simply isn't enough to visit it once, as the country has so many attractions and highlights that it demands more well-deserving visits. It's natural, Himalayan, cultural and religious wonders make Nepal a cornucopia of exotic characters. In Sanskrit books, there are 3 travel words, derived from the root "atan", which means to go / leave home and go elsewhere.

The 3 words are:

- Going out for pleasure and knowledge.

- Going overseas prominently for financial gain.

- Going out to places of religious merits.

ANCIENT NEPAL TOURISM.

- Ancient history is largely based on cultural significance.

- Manjushree (Tibet) is considered to be the first to arrive in Nepal who cut off Chobar hill and released all the water except for the life of Kathmandu village.

- Ashoka (India) visited Lumbini, erected a pillar of Ashoka (Proof that Buddha was born in Nepal)

- The famous Chinese explorer, Huien Tsang, visited Lumbini in 643 AD.

- Regular visits to Buddhism followere such as Santarakshit (742AD), Padma Sambhav (474AD), Kamalsheel (760AD), Atisha Dipankar (1000AD), Milarepa (1010AD)

Lichchhavi Empire (400-750AD)

• The marital relationship between Amshuverma's daughter, Brikuti and Tibetan king Srong Sten Gampo.
• Established bilateral relations established between Tibet and  Nepal.
• Araniko visited Tibet and flourished Nepali art there.

Malla Dynasty (750-1480AD)

• Under the rule of the Malala king, westerners began coming to Nepal for the purpose of spreading and promoting Christianity.
• Establish good trade relations between Tibet and India.

- During the time of Lichhavi and Malla, great strides in arts and culture were made. The buildings, paintings and sculptures were greatly improved.

- Many temples, monuments, statues and inscriptions, existing festivals which are a tourist attraction.

- Chinese, Tibetans, and Indians used to visit Nepal mainly for religious and commercial reasons.

TOURISM AFTER NEPAL ASSOCIATION  (1767 - 1950 AD)

- 1767 AD:  Prithivi Narayan Shah unified scattered principalities into bigger Nepal.

- 1792 AD: Captain Kirk Patric, a military officer, came to collect facts about Nepal. He wrote the book “An Account of the Kingdom of Nepal” which helped to introduce Nepal to the outside country.

- 1816 AD: Sugauli agreement was signed between Nepal and the British East India Company. The beginning of the regular visit of British citizens to Kathmandu.

- 1850-51 AD:  Rana prime minister Junga Bdr. Rana visited Britain which brought Kingdom of Nepal into limelight in Europe.

- 1911/21 King George V and the Prince of Wales visit Nepal to hunt the Tiber.

- Regular visits by the Prime Minister of Rana to Britain and British officials in Nepal.

- The first record published by foreign tourists to Nepal is found in Percival London's 'Nepal' book, in which 153 Europeans, mostly Englishmen, are reported to have visited Kathmandu in the period between 1881 and 1925 AD.

TOURISM AFTER 1950

- 104 years the Rana Regime autocracy was ended in 1950.

- Slow development in Nepal began to take place.

- A road network was established connecting parts of Nepal with the Indian Border.

- Only finger count foreigners were given permission to enter Nepal. Mainly for the purpose of trading, climbing and pilgrimage purpose before 1950.

- In 1950 Maurice Herzog became the first person to summit Annapurna I.

- 1952 AD: Swiss geographer Tony Hagen was hired by the Nepali Government to map Nepal. She traveled 14000 km in Nepal's Himalayas and retired in 1972 AD.

- A group of wealthy tourists, sponsored students began traveling from England to Nepal through Eastern Europe, Turkey, Kasmir, Manali and Nepal to do research and  climbing purpose.

- 1953 AD: Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa climbed Mt. Everest and they were the first to do so.

- The 1950s is considered one of the most important periods in the development of Tourism in Nepal. 14 world-famous over 8000m 7 out of 8 peaks in Nepal were conquered.

- Annapurna I, Everest, Chooyu, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Manaslu, Lhotse, Dhaulagiri.

- The role of tourism in the mountains is very important in the tourism sector as a whole. In fact, Nepal's tourism industry began with a tour of the mountains.

- 1955 AD: The first tourist visa was issued to Russian citizen Boris Lisanevich, Boris Lisanevich, a legendary hotelier and a pioneer in Nepalese tourism.

- He was invited by King Mahendra to allow Thomas Cook's company to send a visitor to Nepal.

- Boris founded the first hotel "Royal Hotel".

- 1955 AD: The first private airline company "Himalayan Airways" came into operation.

- 1956 AD: The National Tourism Council established a five-year tourism development plan under the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

- 1958 AD: Royal Nepal Airlines Cooperation (RNAC) now NAC came into operation.

- Nepal began direct contact with Indian Cities and this land locked country became easily accessible to other countries.

- Nepal became a member of the International Union Of Official Travel Organization (IUOTO) and now the World Tourism Organization (WTO)

- 1964 AD: Jimmy Robert founded the first travel agency "Mountain Travel Nepal" to organize trekking and climbing.

- Founded "Tiger Tops" in Chitwan National Park began to promote and conserve wildlife.

- Directed attention to the Government of Nepalese on the power of Tourism in Nepal. Became a role model in teaching and applying tourism management in Nepal.

- Jimmy Robert is also regarded as ’The Father of Trekking’ in Nepal.

- His vision, then, was to make mountaineering experience easier and more understandable than it was at first.

1960 & 1970'S HIPPIE CULTURES

- Hippies are a group of young people who followed liberal anti-war philosophy.

- Hippie's main site such as buying and selling Hassish was legal until 1979.

- Jimmy Robert has played a key role in promoting and promoting Nepal as a tourist attraction.

- A good Nepali ambassador as he continues to tell about Nepal's cultural and natural beauty when they return home.

- By 1965, all 8000+ mountains were conquered. It has established Nepal as a major hiking and mountain climbing destination.

- The 1972 NATHM was established by the Government of Nepal through the UNDP / ILO to produce the skilled workers needed by the hospitality and tourism industry.

- More than 20,000 professionals are trained from NATHM in various fields such as hotel management, tour guide and hiking etc.

- 1973: Chitwan National Park (CNP) was established to protect and conserve wildlife.

- 1979: Taan was established to regulate, develop, and promote the Nepali pedestrian sector.

- 1998: The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) was established to develop the tourism industry.

- 1992: Necon Air (Nepal's first private airline) and Asian Airlines Helicopter (Nepal's first helicopter) came into existence.

Nepal celebrates "Visit Nepal 98" to strengthen Nepalese tourism.

DURING 1950-1998, NEPAL BECAME A HOT PLACE FOR LARGE HOLIDAYS, JOURNALISTS AND CULTIVAL VISITORS.

TOURISM IN NEPAL (1999 TO 2011)

THE DARK PERIOD (1999-2005)

- 1999 Hijacking of Indian Airlines ships from TIA.

- 2001: "Royal Massacre" A Black Day in Nepalise History

- 2005: King Gyanendra Coup and suspended constitution.

- Moisture rebels were active in different parts of Nepal. Travelers could not move about freely and felt insecure.

- MESSAGE TO THE FOREIGN WORLD, NEPAL IS NOT SAFE FROM BEING.

- 50% of travel agencies closed

- Tourism focuses on the urban area only.

- Reduce the length of stay.

- 2006 A peace agreement was signed between the  Government and  Moist Government.

- The message to foreign countries in Nepal, is now safe to travel

-  Tourism slowly starts picking up.

- 2011: Nepal Tourism Year celebrated

- The global economic crisis has brought a collapse to American and European tourists and has been turned into a hot tourist destination for Chinese travelers.

NEPAL AFTER THE 2015 EARTHQUAKE

- On April 25, 2015, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake shook Nepal.

- Nearly 9,000 people died and more than 22,000 were injured.

-  The Mt. Everest climbing season was canceled.

- The historic site of the city, Bimsen Tower (Dharahara) with 61 meters high was collapsed.

- Also on May 12, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake aftershock occurs, resulting in the destruction of schools, health facilities, water and electricity, roads and bridges, and homes.

- All businesses including the tourism industry and markets was collapsed.

- The 10 billion rupees tourism industry was affected.

- The most important Hindu temple in the land of Pashupatinath was also partially damaged.

- The Everest base camp was destroyed, and 18 climbers were killed.

- Many trekking sites got affected.

- According to officials from the Nepalese archeology department, a total of 57 monuments in Kathmandu village were destroyed as a result of the massive earthquake.

Visit Nepal 2020 tourism cancellation and Covid 19 impact on Nepal Tourism

- Tourism revenue in 2018 accounted for 7.9% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and supported more than 1.05 million jobs.

- Nepal hosted 1.19 million foreign tourists by 2019.

- The ‘ Visit to Nepal 2020 ’ campaign, which was officially launched on January 1, 2020.

- It aims to attract 2 million tourists, generate $2 billion and create thousands of new jobs.

- On January 23, the first case of COVID-19 was found in Nepal.

- It has begun to grow worldwide and amid growing public concern.

- Government Suspended the ‘Visit Nepal 2020’ initiative on March 3, 2020.

- After the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 an epidemic on March 13, the government suspended permissions for mountaineering expeditions and suspended all visas.

- Following the confirmation of the second international prosecution on March 23, the government shut down the country and suspended all national and international flights.

- This was followed by a major cancellation of hotel and guest bookings, which led to an increase in unemployment, loss of income and thousands of lives at risk.

- 2% reduction in international and domestic tourists by January 2020 compared to 2019

- More than 10,000 tourists who entered Nepal before the closure were also left homeless, though many of them eventually returned home.

Kathmandu city.

- Nepal's capital, Kathmandu Valley, is a unique place in Nepal, the center of Nepal's political, commercial and cultural activities.

Boudhanath Stupa

- Bodnath is Nepal's largest mosque and is the religious center of Nepal's largest Tibetan community.

Pashupatinath Temple

- The Pashupatinath Temple, with its magnificent architecture, stands as a symbol of faith, religion, tradition and tradition.

Swayambhunath
