The purpose of this study was to seek depth information how international students maintain their relationship to stay feeling close with their romantic partners although separated by distance or live in a different country, the difficulties and the reasons they choose to remain in the long-distance relationship. Semi-structured interviewed were conducted to four international students. Five themes emerged, they are “keep in touch”, “this is my look”, “trustworthiness as foundation”, “family’s support”, and “relationship’s goal is get married”. The participants utilize many ways of communication to keep in touch well because it also becomes a difficulty for the relationship if it is not done seriously. Since many of the participants have got support from their family, it makes them more believed that this relationship would be no matter even in a long-distance relationship. Admittedly, the distance has both beneficial and negative aspects, but how the couples handle it through the c...

More and more young people are in long-distance relationships (LDRs). However, little is known about perceived or reported outcomes of LDRs compared to geographically close relationships (GCRs). This investigation compared the relationship outcomes (Study 1) and perceived outcomes (Study 2) of individuals in LDRs and GCRs. In Study 1, young adults in LDRs (n ¼ 232) and GCRs (n ¼ 263) completed an online survey assessing relationship and sexual outcomes (romantic satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, extradyadic sexual activity); individuals in LDRs also rated the positive and negative impacts of being in an LDR. Individuals in LDRs and GCRs had similar satisfaction, a similar likelihood of engaging in extradyadic sexual activity, and perceived the impact of being in an LDR as more positive than negative. In Study 2, young adults (N ¼ 626) recruited online were randomly assigned to rate the same outcomes for a hypothetical couple in an LDR or GCR. Observers perceived being in an LDR as having a more negative than positive impact on the sexual relationship. However, satisfaction ratings for both LDRs and GCRs were high although individuals in LDRs were perceived as having significantly lower satisfaction than reported in Study 1. Few gender differences emerged, and perceptions were not affected by participants' past experience being in an LDR. Overall, the results suggest that outcomes for LDRs and GCRs are similar and that people have generally positive perceptions of LDRs. These results have positive implications for young adults, given the popularity of LDRs in this age group.

Today, individuals can relatively easily meet and communicate with each other over great distances due to increased mobility and advances in communication technology. This also allows intimate relationships to be maintained over large geographical distances. Despite these developments, long-distance relationships (LDRs), i.e. intimate relationships maintained over geographical distance, remain understudied. The present thesis aims to fill this knowledge gap and investigates how intimate partners who live so far away from each other that they cannot meet every day make their relationship ongoing beyond face-to-face interaction. Theoretically, this study departs from a symbolic interactionist viewpoint that invites us to study phenomena from the actor’s perspective. Conceptually, the thesis builds on the recent development in sociology of intimate lives that sees intimacy as a relational quality that has to be worked on to be sustained, and that focuses on the practices that make a relationship a relationship. Empirically, the thesis is based upon 19 in-depth interviews with individuals from Latvia with long-distance relationship experience. The thesis consists of four articles. Article I studies the context in which LDRs in Latvia are maintained, focusing on the normative constraints that complicate LDR maintenance. Article II analyses how intimacy is practiced over geographical distance. Article III examines how long-distance partners manage the experience of the time they are together and the time they are geographically apart. Article IV explores the aspect of idealization in LDRs. Overall, the thesis argues for the critical role of imagination in relationship maintenance. The relationship maintenance strategies identified within the articles are imagination-based mediated communication (creating sensual/embodied intimacy, emotional intimacy, daily intimacy and imagined individual intimacy); time-work strategies that enable long-distance partners to deal with the spatiotemporal borders of the time together and the time apart; and creating bi-directional idealization. The thesis is also one of the few works in the field of intimate lives in Eastern Europe and analyses the normative complications that long-distance partners face in their relationship maintenance in Latvia.

This study explored long-distance dating relationships’ (LDDRs) transition to geographic proximity. About half of LDDR partners experience this transition, whereas the other half end their relationships during separation. Among reunited relationships, one-third terminate within 3 months of reunion. Participants’ open-ended responses highlight changes associated with reunion, including the loss of autonomy; increased positive and negative knowledge; time management difficulties; and heightened conflict and jealousy. Desirable features of LDDRs (e.g., autonomy and novelty) appear to be lost, and missed, upon reunion. Individuals whose relationships terminated upon reunion were more likely to report missing aspects of LDDRs. Overall, we propose reunions facilitate relational and partner knowledge acquisition, the dissipation of quixotic ideals, and increased partner interdependence.

Social networking sites (SNS) play an increasingly important role in maintaining geographically close romantic relationships (GCRR). However, knowledge about SNS use in long-distance romantic relationships (LDRR) is still lacking. The present study examined the relative importance of SNS in maintaining LDRR compared to GCRR, particularly with regard to the use of SNS to express involvement (via relational maintenance behaviors) and to gauge a partner's involvement (via partner surveillance and jealousy) in the relationship. An online survey was conducted among predominantly young adult Facebook users who were in a romantic relationship (N=272). Results showed that participants who were in a LDRR reported higher levels of relational maintenance behaviors through SNS than participants who were in a GCRR. Also, as compared to participants who were in a GCRR, participants who were in a LDRR used SNS more for partner surveillance and experienced higher levels of SNS jealousy.

A significant population of college students have been, or are currently, in a long distance relationship (LDR). This study examined tensions experienced by college students in LDRs using Relational Dialectics Theory (RDT) and Dark Side Theory. I used a thematic analysis to analyze responses from an open-ended survey distributed to and answered by 23 students in LDRs. I found that RDT was exemplified in the study by finding tensions of connection-autonomy and predictability-novelty, as well as tensions of balancing time and FOMO-living in the moment. The most common tension management strategies used were selection, separation, and reframing. Finally, I found that LDRs enhanced student’s well-being through a sense of support, communication competence, relational growth, and personal growth, while they detracted from well-being by impeding on other relationships, impeding on school, and impeding on health. The results showed a valuable application of RDT and Dark Side Theory, especially when used to complement each other. I also found that selection as a tension management strategy may have had worse implications for some relationships. Further, I found that LDRs can have negative implications for social support networks. Future research should be done to continue to advance RDT and Dark Side together, look at unique experiences among seemingly monolithic populations, the impacts of LDRs on student success, and the impacts of LDRs on social support.

Relational Maintenance in Long-Distance Dating Relationships: Staying Close

Journal title, journal issn, volume title.

This study addressed the relational maintenance strategies and the meaning 23 to 35 year old students attributed to their long-distance dating relationships. Ten participants completed in depth interviews exploring the thoughts and feelings individuals held about their current long-distance partner and relationship. Also, commitment and quality of alternatives were addressed including the strengths and weaknesses of the respondent's relationship. Common themes of strong friendship, absolute trust, commitment to one partner, and using the technique of reminiscing were all dominant issues that emerged from the interview data. Social network approval as well as positive role models in the form of older siblings was also instrumental in lending support to the success and general positive attitude felt by participants about the geographic separation. Methods of communication included the telephone and e-mail, which was substituted or supplementary when high phone bills created financial concerns for the respondents. Variation in physical visitation was due to the intersection of academic schedule, affordable transportation, attitude towards work disruptions, geographic distance, and a general willingness to travel. Participants told a story of the geographic separation as both a temporary and necessary inconvenience, rather than a major obstacle or focal point of the relationship. Future directions for studying long-distance dating relationships include collecting couple data and examining gender differences to determine if sex has an impact on how geographic separation is viewed.

Based on uses and gratification theory, media richness theory, and social presence theory, the present study explores the role of different communication channels and social support in relationship maintenance among long distance dating partners. Specifically, how social support is related to relational uncertainty, how the use of different communication channels is related to social support variables, and what are main factors of relationship satisfaction are examined in this study. A total of 311 respondents participated in the study. All of four social support variables, emotional support, socializing, advice/guidance and support appraisals were found to be negatively related to relational uncertainty. In addition, both phone call and webcam use were positively related to all support behaviors and support appraisals, while email use was positively related to advice/guidance and support appraisals. Finally, the regression results suggested that emotional support, socializing, support appraisals, phone call, and webcam use were positive predictors of relationship satisfaction, whereas text messaging negatively predicted relationship satisfaction.

Happy couples are everywhere; we see them holding hands at the small, stealing kisses in line at the movie theaters, and buying gifts for one another in shops. It would seem that love is all around us. But what of the couples who live separately? How happy are they? Long distance relationships are becoming more common among couples than they were previously. One partner may have to go away for school or work; the two may even meet online, or one may have to move to care for a sick relative. While these motivations are noble, what is the impact that distance has on a relationship? There are many negative aspects to it, but a few positive ones, as well. Distance and being away from a partner for long periods is difficult for many to cope with; it can create strain. The couple misses one another, and often feels like the other is missing out on their life. Distance can swiftly create insecurity in many relationships. Without a solid foundation of trust, it is easy for one party to assume, after a few unanswered texts or phone calls, that the other is losing interest. The mention of a new name, a member of the opposite sex, can spark jealousy in a partner, as well. Whether it is jealousy over a co-ed interaction or jealousy that other’s get to spend time with their partner while they do not depend entirely on the couple. The couple’s closeness may also suffer. Due to scheduling conflicts the couple may not be able to talk often, or even every day. In a long distance relationship, conversation is all you have, and without it the relationship may begin to fall apart, not to mention the practicality of cost to see one another. This can cause stress on the couple that will undoubtedly filter into a relationship, causing a strain on an already taxing situation. Fortunately, distance does not only impact a relationship negatively. Some couples come out of a long distance portion of their relationship stronger and happier than others. As mentioned before, in a long distance relationship, communication is all you have. Many couples use this time as an opportunity to learn how to communicate better with one another; it is one thing that can always be improved. Long distance relationships can also, surprisingly, be a time for romance. Being a part does not have to mean you are disconnected. Many couples use this time to expand their romantic prowess by sending love letters, care packages, cute emails, or having Skype dates. Cell phones now offer FaceTime as well, which can put you in a face-to-face conversation with your loved one with the tap of a button. Gifts can be bought online and delivered to a loved one’s front doorstep for anniversaries, birthdays, or holidays that may be missed. Couples in long distance relationships also often learn to appreciate the time they have together. A weekend once a month, sometimes less, is very precious. Each second matters; and when a couple is reunited, all of the communication techniques, the romantic gestures, and the sweet moments spent together only serve to make the relationship stronger. In sum, being long distance can take a toll on any relationship. It can present many issues that couples may not have even known existed, such as trust and insecurity. Without a solid foundation of trust, the relationship may fail. If a couple is unable to communicate, they will fail. Jealousy, stress, and the cost of seeing one another may also present issues in a relationship. However, long distance relationships also allow couples to learn how to communicate better. Each couple can flex their ability to be sweet and romantic from afar, and they have a chance to learn that our time together is limited and precious. When entering a long distance relationship, the impact it has on the couple boils down to how committed the two people are to having the relationship work and how optimistic or pessimistic they want to be about the situation.
