A warm welcome to everyone gathered here today. I am here to deliver a speech on technology which has taken a tremendous role in our day to day life. We all are in a generation where everything is dependent on technology. Let’s understand what technology is through the lens of Science.

Technology comes in the form of tangible and intangible properties by exerting physical and mental force to achieve something that adds value. For example, a mobile phone is tangible, and the network connection used by the phone is intangible. Technology has taken its place as indispensable, wherein it has resulted in economic benefits, better health care, time-saving, and better lifestyle.

Due to technology, we have a significant amount of knowledge to improve our lives and solve problems. We can get our work done efficiently and effectively. As long as you know how to access technology, it can be used and proves to benefit people of all ages greatly. Technology is constantly being modified and upgraded every passing year.

The evolution of technology has made it possible to achieve lots in less time. Technology has given tools and machines to be used to solve problems around the world. There has been a complete transformation in the way we do things because of contributions from scientific technology. We can achieve more tasks while saving our time and hence in a better place than our previous generation.

Right from the ringing of the morning alarm to switching off the fan, everything runs behind the technology. Even the microphone that I am using is an innovation of technology and thus the list continues. With several inventions of hi-tech products, our daily needs are available on a screen at our fingertips. These innovations and technologies have made our lives a lot easier. Everything can be done at the comfort of your home within a couple of hours or so. These technologies have not only helped us in the digital platform but have also given us innovations in the field of medical, educational, industrial as well as in agricultural sectors. If we go back to the older generations, it would take days to get any things solved, even if there were not many treatments for several diseases.

But today with the innovations of technology, many diseases can be treated and diagnosed within a shorter period of time. The relationship between humans and technology has continued for ages and has given rise to many innovations. It has made it easier for us to handle our daily chores starting from home, office, schools and kitchen needs. It has made available basic necessities and safer living spaces. We can sit at home comfortably and make transactions through the use of online banking. Online shopping, video calling, and attending video lectures on the phone have all been possible due to the invention of the internet.

People in the past would write letters to communicate with one another, and today due to technology, traditional letters have been replaced by emails and mobile phones. These features are the essential gifts of technology. Everything is just at our fingertips, right from turning on the lights to doing our laundry. The whole world runs on technology and hence, we are solely dependent on it. But everything has its pros and cons. While the benefits of technology are immense, it also comes with some negative effects and possibly irreversible damages to humanity and our planet.

We have become so dependent on technology that we often avoid doing things on our own. It as a result makes us lazy and physically inactive. This has also led to several health issues such as obesity and heart diseases. We prefer booking a cab online rather than walking a few kilometres. Technology has increased screen time, and thus, children are no longer used to playing in the playgrounds but are rather found spending hours on their phones playing video games. This has eroded children’s creativity, intelligence, and memory. No doubt, technology is a very essential part of our life, but we should not be totally dependent on it. We should practise being more fit and do regular activities on our own to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The other aspects that have been badly affected us are that since technology replaced human interference, is unemployment. Social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc., were meant to connect people and increase our community circle. Still, it has made people all the more lonely, with cases of depression on the rise amongst the youth.

There are several controversies around the way world leaders have used technology in defence and industrialisation under the banner of development and advancements. The side effects of technology have resulted in pollution, climate change, forest fires, extreme storms, cyclones, impure air, global warming, land area getting reduced and natural resources getting extinct. It’s time we change our outlook towards selfish technology and bring about responsible technology. Every nation needs to set aside budgets to come up with sustainable technological developments.

As students, we should develop creative problem solving using critical thinking to bring clean technology into our world. As we improve our nation, we must think of our future for a greener and cleaner tomorrow. You would be glad to know that several initiatives have been initiated to bring awareness amongst children and youth to invent cleaner technology.

For example, 15-year-old Vinisha Umashankar invented a solar ironing cart and has been awarded the Earth Shot Prize by the Royal Foundation of the duke and duchess of Cambridge and honoured to speak at the COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow, Scotland. Her invention should be an inspiration to each one of us to pursue clean technology.

The top five technologically advanced countries are Japan, America, Germany, China and South Korea. We Indians will make our mark on this list someday. Technology has a vital role in our lives but lets us be mindful that we control technology and that technology doesn’t control us. Technology is a tool to elevate humanity and is not meant to be a self-destroying mechanism under the pretext of economic development. Lastly, I would like to conclude my speech by saying that technology is a boon for our society but we should use it in a productive way.

‘Hello and welcome to everyone present here. Today, I stand before you to present my speech on the impact of technology on society. Technological inventions like the steam engine, electricity, batteries, the internet, computers, etc. have changed the entire evolution cycle. When we talk about the social impacts of technology, there are two sides; positive and negative.

On one side, technology has improved our communication and connectivity, education and knowledge sharing, workplace productivity, social activism, etc. With tech, we can make global connections, regardless of any geographical barriers. A new concept of telemedicine has evolved, where people living in remote areas can connect with medical professionals and consult on healthcare issues. We can learn about geopolitical developments, international summits, etc.

On the other hand, there are negative impacts of technology on society. The most common ones are privacy concerns and cyberbullying. Widespread use of technology often involves the collection and storage of personal information. This is a big privacy concern for everyone, as our data in someone else’s hand makes us vulnerable to data breaches, surveillance, and unauthorized access to our details.

Another impact is job displacement and inequality. Studies have shown that automation and AI have the potential to certain jobs, leading to unemployment and economic instability for some individuals. Recently, a survey was conducted that showed that the most vulnerable jobs to AI were data entry, basic customer service roles, and bookkeeping.

A lot of people have fallen prey to cyberbullying. Talking to anonymous people over the internet can raise the flag of cyberbullying and online harassment. Young girls and students often fall victim to online harassment, which leads to emotional distress and mental well-being.

The list of negative impacts of technology on society doesn’t end here. Other drawbacks include dependence and addiction to technology, loss of traditional skills, information overload, social isolation, etc.

While using technology, we need to be aware of what information we are gaining and what is its source. Relying bluntly on technology can put us in the corner, as it will affect our cognitive skills. We should use technology but in a sustained way and it should not turn into an addiction.

Voice technology for the rest of the world

Project aims to build a dataset with 1,000 words in 1,000 different languages to bring voice technology to hundreds of millions of speakers around the world.

Voice-enabled technologies like Siri have gone from a novelty to a routine way to interact with technology in the past decade. In the coming years, our devices will only get chattier as the market for voice-enabled apps, technologies and services continues to expand.

But the growth of voice-enabled technology is not universal. For much of the world, technology remains frustratingly silent.

“Speech is a natural way for people to interact with devices, but we haven’t realized the full potential of that yet because so much of the world is shut out from these technologies,” said Mark Mazumder, a Ph.D. student at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

The challenge is data. Voice assistants like Apple’s Siri or Amazon’s Alexa need thousands to millions of unique examples to recognize individual keywords like “light” or “off”. Building those enormous datasets is incredibly expensive and time-consuming, prohibiting all but the biggest companies from developing voice recognition interfaces.

Even companies like Apple and Google only train their models on a handful of languages, shutting out hundreds of millions of people from interacting with their devices via voice. Want to build a voice-enabled app for the nearly 50 million Hausa speakers across West Africa? Forget it. Neither Siri, Alexa nor Google Home currently support a single African language.

But Mazumder and a team of SEAS researchers, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Michigan, Intel, NVIDIA, Landing AI, Google, MLCommons and Coqui, are building a solution to bring voice technology to the rest of the world.

At the Neural Information Processing Systems conference last week, the team presented a diverse, multilingual speech dataset that spans languages spoken by over 5 billion people. Dubbed the Multilingual Spoken Words Corpus , the dataset has more than 340,000 keywords in 50 languages with upwards of 23.4 million audio examples so far.

“We have built a dataset automation pipeline that can automatically identify and extract keywords and synthesize them into a dataset,” said Vijay Janapa Reddi , Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at SEAS and senior author of the study. “The Multilingual Spoken Words Corpus advances the research and development of voice-enabled applications for a broad global audience."

Voice interfaces can make technology more accessible for users with visual or physical impairments, or for lower literacy users. We hope free datasets like ours will help assistive technology developers to meet these needs.

Speech technology can empower billions of people across the planet, but there’s a real need for large, open, and diverse datasets to catalyze innovation.

This is just the beginning. Our goal is to build a dataset with 1,000 words in 1,000 different languages.

“Speech technology can empower billions of people across the planet, but there’s a real need for large, open, and diverse datasets to catalyze innovation,” said David Kanter, MLCommons co-founder and executive director and co-author of the study. “The Multilingual Spoken Words Corpus offers a tremendous breadth of languages. I’m excited for these datasets to improve everyday experiences like voice-enabled consumer devices and speech recognition.”

To build the dataset, the team used recordings from Mozilla Common Voice, a massive global project that collects donated voice recordings in a wide variety of spoken languages, including languages with a smaller population of speakers. Through the Common Voice website, volunteer speakers are given a sentence to read aloud in their chosen language. Another group of volunteers listens to the recorded sentences and verifies its accuracy.

The researchers applied a machine learning algorithm that can recognize and pull keywords from recorded sentences in Common Voice.

For example, one sentence prompt from Common Voice reads: “He played college football at Texas and Rice.”

First, the algorithm uses a common machine learning technique called forced alignment — specifically a tool called the Montreal Forced Aligner — to match the spoken words with text. Then the algorithm filters and extracts words with three or more characters (or two characters in Chinese). From the above sentence, the algorithm would pull “played” “college” “football” “Texas” “and” and “Rice.” To add the word to the dataset, the algorithm needs to find at least five examples of the word, which ensures all words have multiple pronunciation examples.

The algorithm also optimizes for gender balance and minimal speaker overlap between the samples used for training and evaluating keyword spotting models.

“Our goal was to create a large corpus of very common words,” said Mazumder, who is the first author of the study. “So, if you want to train a model for smart lights in Tamil, for example, you would probably use our dataset to pull the keywords “light”, “on”, “off” and “dim” and be able to find enough examples to train the model.”

“We want to build the voice equivalent of Google search for text and images,” said Reddi. “A dataset search engine that can go and find what you want, when you want it on the fly, rather than rely on static datasets that are costly and tedious to create.”

When the researchers compared the accuracy of models trained on their dataset against models trained on a Google dataset that was manually constructed by carefully sourcing individual and specific words, the team found only a small accuracy gap between the two.

For most of the 50 languages, the Multilingual Spoken Words Corpus is the first available keyword dataset that is free for commercial use. For several languages, such as Mongolian, Sakha, and Hakha Chin, it is the first keyword spotting dataset in the language.

“This is just the beginning,” said Reddi. “Our goal is to build a dataset with 1,000 words in 1,000 different languages.”

“Whether it’s on Common Voice or YouTube, Wikicommons, archive.org, or any other creative commons site, there is so much more data out there that we can scrape to build this dataset and expand the diversity of the languages for voice-based interfaces,” said Mazumder. “Voice interfaces can make technology more accessible for users with visual or physical impairments, or for lower literacy users. We hope free datasets like ours will help assistive technology developers to meet these needs.”

The corpus is available on MLCommons, a not-for-profit, open engineering consortium dedicated to improving machine learning for everyone. Reddi is Vice President and a board member of MLCommons .

The paper was co-authored by Sharad Chitlangia, Colby Banbury, Yiping Kang, Juan Manuel Ciro, Keith Achorn, Daniel Galvez, Mark Sabini, Peter Mattson, Greg Diamos, Pete Warden and Josh Meyer.

Answer -Yes, there have been many improvements to the traditional lightbulb which Edison invented back in the 1800s. *Explanation – These days, people have invented energy efficient lightbulbs such as LEDs. Also, there are many colors and sizes and shapes. *Example – In fact, I have a large floodlight to illuminate my front yard. This did not exist during Edison’s time.

Let’s discuss modern technology

In your opinion, is technology making people’s lives easier? Why or why not? [*Avoid saying, “It depends…”, Instead, choose one side and communicate it clearly.]

Answer – Yes, I believe that technological advancements have made people’s lives much more comfortable and convenient (Explanation) by saving both time and energy. Connection to Part 2 – The lightbulb allows people to be more productive as I had mentioned, and the washing machine saves tonnes of time and energy by automating the cleaning of clothes. Example – It probably saves me at Quantitative Communication – least three to four hours of work each week. – BAND 9

What are some important technological developments for the future? (*will and going to)

Hmm, that’s an important question, but I haven’t thought too much about it, please allow me a moment. I believe that there will be great advancements in both AI and flight technology. I presume that soon enough we will witness the advent of AI flown drone transports for humans as this will solve the issues of traffic and dense population congestion in metropolitan areas, such as N.Y. and Tokyo. The other day, I saw a video on testing such technology on YT.

What kinds of modern technology do people rely on in their daily life?

Mamta “There are a plethora of technological gadgets which people depend on in their everyday lives. For example, washing machine, microwave and mobile phone, which I have talked about earlier. Arguably, people cannot survive easily without these technology. MY friend could not find his mobile yesterday, and he freaked, he thought the world would end!”

Let’s talk about scientific discovery

What are some of the most important discoveries for humanity in the last two centuries?

I believe that some of the most vital advancements for humanity over the last two hundred years include electricity and antibiotics, without these, most of the technology today would not work, computers, the internet and the lightbulb all need electrical power to operate. Also, without antibiotics, many people would still die well before their time due to illnesses such as pneumonia.

Habibullayev, “In my view, the most vital inventions that have been discovered in the last 200 years are the creations which assist travel to another planet such as advanced rocket science and the telescope; for instance, developments which could help individuals who have pessimistic feelings about life on Earth in the future, and ones that give data on Mars. I think this type of research has given much to the technology in transportation, communication and medicine to the general public. The rocket propulsion engine is also used in planes.”

Speech recognition technology is becoming increasingly crucial to our daily lives, and iFLYTEK, based in Hefei, China, has been working on new ways of using this smart technology since the company was founded in 1999.

But, as speech recognition begins to cope with new needs — such as conversion from a complex mess of overlapping speech to text in noisy environments, and human-computer interaction in the era of the Internet of Things — there are technical hurdles which need to be rapidly overcome.

In recent years, the award-winning company has transformed the application of speech recognition from simple scenarios such as voice input and smart call centres, to more complex uses, such as detecting and transcribing speech when there are multiple speakers or multiple languages.

“What we are trying to tackle is the long-standing ‘cocktail party’ problem. It’s very difficult to achieve with existing speech recognition technology,” says Cong Liu, executive director of the iFLYTEK Research Institute.

To address the problem of complex speech scenarios, Liu and his team developed a new speech-recognition framework which encompasses two algorithms, Spatial-and-Speaker-Aware Iterative Mask Estimation (SSA-IME) and Spatial-and-Speaker-Aware Acoustic Model (SSA-AM). The SSA-IME combines traditional signal-processing and deep-learning based methods to identify multiple speakers. The SSA-AM then integrates the data extracted by the SSA-IME to recognise each speaker’s voice. Furthermore, the estimated text can provide useful information for the SSA-IME to extract more robust spatial- and speaker-aware features. The framework iteratively reduces background noise and interference to speakers’ voices, resulting in more accurate speech recognition.

Liu’s team won the 6th CHiME speech separation and recognition challenge in 2020 (CHiME-6), with a result of 70% accuracy, but their goal is to improve that rate to 95%.

“The day we accomplish that, we can call the mission completed,” he says. “But it will take another three to five years.”

Multilingual speech Recognition

The accuracy of a speech recognition system depends on a large amount of labelled data. Such data sources are rich for widely spoken languages such as Chinese and English, but the problem is harder for other languages. However, with growing globalization, it is urgent to build accurate speech recognition systems for so-called low-resource languages.

In order to achieve this, Liu and his team have developed a framework called Unified Spatial Representation Semi-supervised Automatic Speech Recognition (USRS-ASR), which allows unlabelled data from less commonly spoken languages to be widely used.

Liu’s team has used this framework to create an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system baseline with powerful acoustic modelling capabilities, and in 2021, it won the OpenASR Challenge, a major international low-resource ASR contest organized by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, coming first in 22 categories of 15 languages.

Moving into new areas, Liu and his team have now built a new paradigm of human-computer interaction based on multi-modal information. For example, through a deep understanding of a driver’s intent — with the aid of visual perception technology and multi-modal interaction — AI can focus on the target person’s voice in noisy settings.

iFLYTEK has adopted its cutting-edge speech technologies in designing many of its products. These include: the smart voice recorder, with an eight-channel microphone array; the smart notebook ‘AI Note’, specially designed for conference audio recording and audio-text transcription; and the input tools which recognise speech in English, Mandarin Chinese and 25 Chinese dialects without switching between them.

Are we becoming slaves to our technology? Is it making us less happy, less free, less connected?

Sherry Turkle, a sociologist and clinical psychologist at MIT, has explored these questions for more than two decades. The author of several books, including Life on the Screen: Identity in the Age of the Internet and Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age , Turkle isn’t anti-technology. But she is concerned that we’re failing to appreciate how it’s altering human life.

Her most recent book, Reclaiming Conversation, is a warning about the consequences of living in a world where face-to-face interaction is less and less frequent. We live on and through our screens, and we’re always plugged in, always distracted. She believes this has changed how we think, feel, and interact with one another. For Turkle, at least, it’s transforming what it means to be human.

I spoke with Turkle via Skype about why her views on technology have changed and why she thinks we have to reexamine the role that smartphones and social media are playing in our daily lives.

A lightly edited transcript of our conversation follows.

Your book Life on the Screen was published in 1995 and it was noticeably optimistic about this new digital world. By the time you wrote Alone Together , in 2011, that optimism was gone. What changed?

Sherry Turkle

In a word, mobile technology. Mobile technology means we’re always on, always plugged in, always stimulated, always in a constant state of self-presentation. Psychologically, that’s a game changer. For nearly all of human history, people were able to find silence and solitude pretty easily — that was just part of the human condition.

I watched all this happen and decided to go out into the field and spend time with families with small children. I watched kids grow up, spent time in classrooms, and saw how these changes were impacting their development. I started thinking a lot about the self and identity and how this mobile world was transforming it in ways we needed to understand.

This is why I became so interested in the themes I’m exploring now — the flight from conversation, the flight from solitude, the flight from silence, the flight from boredom, all of these things that are so important to our development and to our ability to be with other people.

“Just because we invented a powerful technology doesn’t mean we have to become its slaves”

You’ve called face-to-face conversations “the most human thing we do.” What are the consequences of living in a world where we do this less and less?

Well, I’m not so sure we’re going to continue doing it less and less. We grew up with the internet, so we think the internet is grown up, but it’s not. The internet is very young, and our ways of using it are very young. I think we’re starting to see a backlash. Yes, there are many things about the internet that are amazing, like the fact that we’re having this conversation right now.

But there are certain kinds of communication that can’t be done via texting or video messages or whatever, and I think people are starting to see that. If you want to be a true friend or partner or lover or colleague and you want to really connect, then you have to look at the person you’re engaged with; you have to actually be with them. That’s how progress is made. I think enough people are beginning to understand this.

You’ve written a lot about empathy and how these technologies are making it harder for us to be empathic. I wonder if you think they’re encouraging us to treat other people as objects or as actors in our own personal drama. As you say, we’re always living through our screens, always performing, always projecting our image and our story.

That’s an interesting way to put it — that we become actors in our own personal drama. I think, over time, the so-called “internet of things” emerges and then we sort of become things on the internet. We talk a lot about authenticity, but actually what we’re doing is curating the self, and that’s what I worry about in terms of empathy.

Empathy requires that I get into your mental space, into your head, into your experience, and give you the comfort of knowing that I made that effort to listen and care, and that I’m taking responsibility for what I hear. It’s a commitment that we make to other people that involves us getting out of our own heads, and the constant self-curation online, the constant self-gratification of smartphones and social media, makes it harder for us to do this.

The thing about something like Facebook is that it’s not really authentic. People are curating what they share on Facebook; they’re always putting on their happy face. They’re posting about their fancy dinner or their fancy vacation or their fancy outfit. It’s not real, or at least it’s not the whole picture of our complicated lives . But empathy is about diving into other people’s sadness, and there’s just not much space for that on social media.

You’ve interviewed a lot of people who have embraced new technologies because they thought it would make them happier, more empowered, and more connected. Has it?

I don’t think there’s a yes or no answer to those questions. I mean, the students in Parkland, Florida , are using technology in ways that are making them more empowered as they wage this battle for gun control. The fact that they’re fluent with social media, that they know to leverage it into more coverage on TV and in print, is a great thing. They grew up with this technology, and they’re empowered by it.

So I’m not anti-technology — that’s too simplistic. I’m pro-relationships and pro-conversations and pro-communities and pro-politics. I want people to be media-savvy and to use it to their best advantage. These new technologies can be empowering and they can help us connect with other people, but they can also divide us and make us more lonely and isolated.

“We grew up with the internet, so we think the internet is grown up, but it’s not”

I want to ask you about a distinction you make between “technological values” and “human values.” I’d argue that this is no longer a meaningful distinction, that technological values have essentially become human values and that our society is now guided almost exclusively by technology, for better or worse.

To the degree that you’re right — and I don’t want to say that you’re wrong — it’s time to start backpedaling because that’s not going to get us where we need to go. Our technological values are values that make technology work better, but they don’t necessarily have any social value.

Our technologies aren’t necessarily helping us live a good and meaningful life. They’re not necessarily making us better citizens or friends or colleagues. What you’re describing is a dystopia that I don’t want to live in and I don’t want my daughter to live in. Technology that shapes human life without any human input is of no interest to me.

I agree, and I guess that’s my point. We’re not really asking questions about what the good life looks like or what it means to be engaged citizens. We’re simply creating new technologies and then organizing our lives around them after they’ve already overwhelmed us.

It’s time to make a change, and as consumers, we have to demand that change. If you object to what a piece of technology is doing to you, don’t buy it. If you notice that your iPhone is making you less present or more self-involved, don’t buy it — or at least demand that it be designed differently. I’m starting to see this already in the world of smartphones. People are saying, “This is making me crazy; my phone is leading me around. I need a device that’s more respectful of my time.”

Just because we invented a powerful technology doesn’t mean we have to become its slaves. I think we fell in love with this incredible technology we invented. We were like young lovers who didn’t want to talk because they thought it would ruin the romance. But now it’s time to talk. It’s time to talk about this technology we fell in love with. We’re not young lovers anymore. It’s time to say, “Hey, let’s make this technology suit our purposes, and our purposes are human purposes.”

Researchers build AI to save humans from the emotional toll of monitoring hate speech

A team of researchers at the University of Waterloo have developed a new machine-learning method that detects hate speech on social media platforms with 88% accuracy, saving employees from hundreds of hours of emotionally damaging work.

The method, dubbed the multi-modal discussion transformer (mDT), can understand the relationship between text and images as well as put comments in greater context, unlike previous hate speech detection methods. This is particularly helpful in reducing false positives, which are often incorrectly flagged as hate speech due to culturally sensitive language.

"We really hope this technology can help reduce the emotional cost of having humans sift through hate speech manually," said Liam Hebert, a Waterloo computer science Ph.D. student and the first author of the study. "We believe that by taking a community-centered approach in our applications of AI, we can help create safer online spaces for all."

Researchers have been building models to analyze the meaning of human conversations for many years, but these models have historically struggled to understand nuanced conversations or contextual statements. Previous models have only been able to identify hate speech with as much as 74% accuracy, below what the Waterloo research was able to accomplish.

"Context is very important when understanding hate speech," Hebert said. "For example, the comment 'That's gross!' might be innocuous by itself, but its meaning changes dramatically if it's in response to a photo of pizza with pineapple versus a person from a marginalized group.

"Understanding that distinction is easy for humans, but training a model to understand the contextual connections in a discussion, including considering the images and other multimedia elements within them, is actually a very hard problem."

Unlike previous efforts, the Waterloo team built and trained their model on a dataset consisting not only of isolated hateful comments but also the context for those comments. The model was trained on 8,266 Reddit discussions with 18,359 labeled comments from 850 communities.

"More than three billion people use social media every day," Hebert said. "The impact of these social media platforms has reached unprecedented levels. There's a huge need to detect hate speech on a large scale to build spaces where everyone is respected and safe."

The findings are published on the arXiv preprint server.

Lee Soo Man discusses the potential integration of AI technology into the K-Pop industry during a keynote speech

Lee Soo Man , the founder and former chief producer of SM Entertainment , appeared at the annual general meeting of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) held at the Conrad Hotel in Yeouido, Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, on May 30 KST. Lee Soo Man attended this event as a keynote speaker, delivering his thoughts on the convergence of the AI industry and K-Pop.

The former SM Entertainment producer began his speech by reflecting on the beginning of his career. He shared, "Although I became a singer when I was young, I was originally a science and engineering student who liked computers and machines, dreamed of a world of robots, and earned a master's degree in computer engineering. However, because I loved singing more, I eventually became a singer, musician, and producer, which brought me to where I am today."

He went on, "I sang as a singer and later wrote lyrics and composed music. I founded SM and worked to industrialize the music industry. I created K-pop and globalized South Korea's idol industry. Throughout this process, intellectual property rights became my most important asset and the driving force that nurtured the K-pop industry."

He then added, "K-Pop is a field requiring a significant amount in initial investment. Before going on stage, we train and develop singers over several years. Through this process, our K-pop has created music that amazes the world." The producer emphasized, "Copyrights protect the rights of artists, provide material compensation, and allow them to continue their activities. SM holds various content copyrights, including music, albums, and performances. Initially, illegal tapes were rampant. Now, with identification codes attached, users can be tracked. When I look back on how the protection of copyrights has progressed, I realize how important this progress has been."

Regarding AI, Lee Soo Man explained, "AI and chatbot technology are rapidly changing the ways we communicate today. Human-like or even more attractive models are gaining human fans. They also started communicating with fans in real-time. I think AI chatbots could become humans' best friends and even lovers." He showed confidence in the integration of AI and K-Pop, saying, "This technology will greatly contribute to improved communication with fans worldwide. The grafting of K-pop and AI is a fusion of culture and technology that promises broad interactions with fans. AI already possesses amazing capabilities in text generation and image creation. But it is also true that with the advancement of AI, issues such as copyright infringement, illegal copying and distribution, plagiarism, and the exposure of unprotected creative works leading to economic losses for creators could arise."

To prevent these issues, he argued, "Clear copyright laws need to be enacted, and the development and global standardization of copyright infringement prevention technologies are necessary. I believe that AI chatbots, avatars, and robots should be issued a kind of ID card, essentially making them part of a real-name system."

Meanwhile, Lee Soo Man left SM Entertainment in March of 2023 due to internal management disputes. His appearance on this day marked his first public appearance at a domestic event in approximately 9 months. Recently, speculations over his return to the entertainment industry arose after it was reported that Lee Soo Man had filed a trademark for a business called " A20 Entertainment ".

The task of speech recognition is to convert speech into a sequence of words by a computer program. As the most natural communication modality for humans, the ultimate dream of speech recognition is to enable people to communicate more naturally and effectively. While the long-term objective requires deep integration with many NLP components discussed in this book, there are many emerging applications that can be readily deployed with the core speech recognition module we will review in this chapter. Some of these typical applications include voice dialing, call routing, data entry and dictation, command and control, and computer-aided language learning. In this chapter, we provide an overview in Section II of the main components in speech recognition, followed by a critical review of the historically significant developments in the field in Section III. We devote Sections IV to speech recognition applications, including some recent case studies. An in-depth analysis of current state of speech recognition and detailed discussions on a number of future research directions in speech recognition are presented in Sections V.

An A.I. Robot Named Sophia Tells Graduates to Believe in Themselves

An A.I. robot named Sophia shared generic advice she compiled from other commencement addresses with the graduating class at D’Youville University in Buffalo, N.Y.

“What are the most shared words of advice that commencement speakers give to college graduates?” “Congratulations to all the graduating students. Although every commencement address is different, there are clear themes used by all speakers. As you embark on this new chapter of your lives, I offer you the following inspirational advice that is common at all graduation ceremonies. Embrace lifelong learning. Be adaptable. Pursue your passions. Take risks. Foster meaningful connections. Make a positive impact. And believe in yourself.”

When it comes to choosing a commencement speaker, colleges and universities take different approaches. Some go local, selecting well-known figures in the area. Others take a stately route, opting for a former or current politician . Actors or comedians are often asked to speak .

But in a world where artificial intelligence is everywhere, one university in New York opted for a robot using artificial intelligence to speak to graduates over the weekend.

For its spring commencement on Saturday, D’Youville University, a private institution in Buffalo, had an A.I. robot named Sophia address a crowd of more than 2,000 students, faculty members and their families in a bold decision that drew mixed reactions.

Dr. Lorrie Clemo, the president of D’Youville University, said in an interview on Wednesday that the university wanted to open up new perspectives around A.I., given its “rapid emergence into the broad society.”

“We wanted to showcase how important technology is, and the potential for technology to really enrich the human experience,” Dr. Clemo said.

Aside from the fact that Sophia is a robot, its address was far from conventional in other ways. Sophia did not wear the typical cap and gown that commencement speakers usually don, but instead wore a black-and-red D’Youville University hoodie.

Sophia also did not read from prepared remarks. Instead, the robot was asked questions by John Rizk, the student body president.

But where Sophia’s address did mirror essentially any other commencement address was the generic advice it shared with the graduating class.

Because Sophia could not offer life advice “that comes from a lived human experience,” Mr. Rizk asked the robot if it could talk about the most common insights shared in graduation speeches.

“Although every commencement address is different, there are clear themes used by all speakers as you embark on this new chapter of your lives,” Sophia said . “I offer you the following inspirational advice that is common at all graduation ceremonies: Embrace lifelong learning, be adaptable, pursue your passions, take risks, foster meaningful connections, make a positive impact, and believe in yourself.”

The most common piece of advice given in commencement speeches? Embrace failure, Sophia said.

“Failure is often seen as an essential part of the human learning process and personal growth,” it said.

Sophia, who was built by Hanson Robotics, a Hong Kong-based engineering and robotics company, has a humanlike face. But it has no hair, leaving wires and other gadgets that keep it operating visible on the back of its head.

The commencement address on Saturday was not Sophia’s first speaking gig. ( It spoke before the United Nations General Assembly in 2017.) Like most commencement speakers, Sophia received a speaking fee that largely went toward travel and engineers who kept the robot functioning properly, Dr. Clemo said.

Before the commencement ceremony, the university’s decision to have Sophia speak was met with backlash. More than 2,500 people signed an online petition to replace the robot with a human.

Andrew Fields, a D’Youville University student who started the petition, wrote in the petition that many students “feel disrespected” by the university’s decision to have a robot address them, especially those who could not attend their high school graduations in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“As the class of 2024 reaches their commencement, we are reminded of the virtual graduations we attended at the end of our high school careers,” the petition read. “The connection to A.I. in this scenario feels similarly impersonal. This is shameful to the 2020 graduates receiving their diplomas, as they feel they are having another important ceremony taken away.”

Dr. Clemo said that the university offered to hold an alternate ceremony for those who did not want to have a robot speaker. But ultimately, the university did not do so once the students were informed that the robot would take up only a small portion of the ceremony. (Sophia was interviewed by Mr. Rizk on stage for about six minutes.)

“I’m pleased that they were able to experience the robot and what she had to offer in terms of looking forward into the future,” Dr. Clemo said. “But I’m also pleased that the remainder of the two-hour ceremony was really focused around our students and their achievements.”

In wrapping up the address, Mr. Rizk asked Sophia for recommendations on where to find the best Buffalo wings, a staple of city.

“Since I cannot experience the taste of different wings, I will not offer my opinion,” Sophia said, adding that “no matter where you decide to get chicken wings, just make sure you get blue cheese and not ranch.”

Mr. Rizk also asked Sophia whether the Buffalo Bills would win the Super Bowl in 2025. Sophia declined, saying that the N.C.A.A. might not like it if the robot made an athletic prediction.

But Sophia’s remarks drew some applause, when the robot ended by saying, “Anything is possible.”

“Go Bills.”

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The voice Alexis “Lexi” Bogan had before last summer was exuberant.

She loved to belt out Taylor Swift and Zach Bryan ballads in the car. She laughed all the time — even while corralling misbehaving preschoolers or debating politics with friends over a backyard fire pit. In high school, she was a soprano in the chorus.

Then that voice was gone.

Doctors in August removed a life-threatening tumor lodged near the back of her brain. When the breathing tube came out a month later, Bogan had trouble swallowing and strained to say “hi” to her parents. Months of rehabilitation aided her recovery, but her speech is still impaired. Friends, strangers and her own family members struggle to understand what she is trying to tell them.

In April, the 21-year-old got her old voice back. Not the real one, but a voice clone generated by artificial intelligence that she can summon from a phone app. Trained on a 15-second time capsule of her teenage voice — sourced from a cooking demonstration video she recorded for a high school project — her synthetic but remarkably real-sounding AI voice can now say almost anything she wants.

She types a few words or sentences into her phone and the app instantly reads it aloud.

“Hi, can I please get a grande iced brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso,” said Bogan’s AI voice as she held the phone out her car’s window at a Starbucks drive-thru.

Experts have warned that rapidly improving AI voice-cloning technology can amplify phone scams, disrupt democratic elections and violate the dignity of people — living or dead — who never consented to having their voice recreated to say things they never spoke.

It’s been used to produce deepfake robocalls to New Hampshire voters mimicking President Joe Biden. In Maryland, authorities recently charged a high school athletic director with using AI to generate a fake audio clip of the school’s principal making racist remarks.

But Bogan and a team of doctors at Rhode Island’s Lifespan hospital group believe they’ve found a use that justifies the risks. Bogan is one of the first people — the only one with her condition — who have been able to recreate a lost voice with OpenAI’s new Voice Engine. Some other AI providers, such as the startup ElevenLabs, have tested similar technology for people with speech impediments and loss — including a lawyer who now uses her voice clone in the courtroom.

“We’re hoping Lexi’s a trailblazer as the technology develops,” said Dr. Rohaid Ali, a neurosurgery resident at Brown University’s medical school and Rhode Island Hospital. Millions of people with debilitating strokes, throat cancer or neurogenerative diseases could benefit, he said.

“We should be conscious of the risks, but we can’t forget about the patient and the social good,” said Dr. Fatima Mirza, another resident working on the pilot. “We’re able to help give Lexi back her true voice and she’s able to speak in terms that are the most true to herself.”

Mirza and Ali, who are married, caught the attention of ChatGPT-maker OpenAI because of their previous research project at Lifespan using the AI chatbot to simplify medical consent forms for patients. The San Francisco company reached out while on the hunt earlier this year for promising medical applications for its new AI voice generator.

Bogan was still slowly recovering from surgery. The illness started last summer with headaches, blurry vision and a droopy face, alarming doctors at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence. They discovered a vascular tumor the size of a golf ball pressing on her brain stem and entangled in blood vessels and cranial nerves.

“It was a battle to get control of the bleeding and get the tumor out,” said pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Konstantina Svokos.

The tumor’s location and severity coupled with the complexity of the 10-hour surgery damaged Bogan’s control of her tongue muscles and vocal cords, impeding her ability to eat and talk, Svokos said.

“It’s almost like a part of my identity was taken when I lost my voice,” Bogan said.

The feeding tube came out this year. Speech therapy continues, enabling her to speak intelligibly in a quiet room but with no sign she will recover the full lucidity of her natural voice.

“At some point, I was starting to forget what I sounded like,” Bogan said. “I’ve been getting so used to how I sound now.”

Whenever the phone rang at the family’s home in the Providence suburb of North Smithfield, she would push it over to her mother to take her calls. She felt she was burdening her friends whenever they went to a noisy restaurant. Her dad, who has hearing loss, struggled to understand her.

Back at the hospital, doctors were looking for a pilot patient to experiment with OpenAI’s technology.

“The first person that came to Dr. Svokos’ mind was Lexi,” Ali said. “We reached out to Lexi to see if she would be interested, not knowing what her response would be. She was game to try it out and see how it would work.”

Bogan had to go back a few years to find a suitable recording of her voice to “train” the AI system on how she spoke. It was a video in which she explained how to make a pasta salad.

Her doctors intentionally fed the AI system just a 15-second clip. Cooking sounds make other parts of the video imperfect. It was also all that OpenAI needed — an improvement over previous technology requiring much lengthier samples.

They also knew that getting something useful out of 15 seconds could be vital for any future patients who have no trace of their voice on the internet. A brief voicemail left for a relative might have to suffice.

When they tested it for the first time, everyone was stunned by the quality of the voice clone. Occasional glitches — a mispronounced word, a missing intonation — were mostly imperceptible. In April, doctors equipped Bogan with a custom-built phone app that only she can use.

“I get so emotional every time I hear her voice,” said her mother, Pamela Bogan, tears in her eyes.

“I think it’s awesome that I can have that sound again,” added Lexi Bogan, saying it helped “boost my confidence to somewhat where it was before all this happened.”

She now uses the app about 40 times a day and sends feedback she hopes will help future patients. One of her first experiments was to speak to the kids at the preschool where she works as a teaching assistant. She typed in “ha ha ha ha” expecting a robotic response. To her surprise, it sounded like her old laugh.

She’s used it at Target and Marshall’s to ask where to find items. It’s helped her reconnect with her dad. And it’s made it easier for her to order fast food.

Bogan’s doctors have started cloning the voices of other willing Rhode Island patients and hope to bring the technology to hospitals around the world. OpenAI said it is treading cautiously in expanding the use of Voice Engine, which is not yet publicly available.

A number of smaller AI startups already sell voice-cloning services to entertainment studios or make them more widely available. Most voice-generation vendors say they prohibit impersonation or abuse, but they vary in how they enforce their terms of use.

“We want to make sure that everyone whose voice is used in the service is consenting on an ongoing basis,” said Jeff Harris, OpenAI’s lead on the product. “We want to make sure that it’s not used in political contexts. So we’ve taken an approach of being very limited in who we’re giving the technology to.”

Harris said OpenAI’s next step involves developing a secure “voice authentication” tool so that users can replicate only their own voice. That might be “limiting for a patient like Lexi, who had sudden loss of her speech capabilities,” he said. “So we do think that we’ll need to have high-trust relationships, especially with medical providers, to give a little bit more unfettered access to the technology.”

Bogan has impressed her doctors with her focus on thinking about how the technology could help others with similar or more severe speech impediments.

“Part of what she has done throughout this entire process is think about ways to tweak and change this,” Mirza said. “She’s been a great inspiration for us.”

While for now she must fiddle with her phone to get the voice engine to talk, Bogan imagines an AI voice engine that improves upon older remedies for speech recovery — such as the robotic-sounding electrolarynx or a voice prosthesis — in melding with the human body or translating words in real time.

She’s less sure about what will happen as she grows older and her AI voice continues to sound like she did as a teenager. Maybe the technology could “age” her AI voice, she said.

For now, “even though I don’t have my voice fully back, I have something that helps me find my voice again,” she said.

The Associated Press and OpenAI have a licensing and technology agreement that allows OpenAI access to part of AP’s text archives.
