Days Gone Nero Research Site locations, Nero Checkpoint locations and Nero Injector locations explained

Where to find everything Nero-related - from Research Sites to Injector locations - in Days Gone.

Days Gone Nero Research Sites and Nero Checkpoints are one of many types of collectibles and places to visit. Even in the post apocalypse there are still things worth searching for, and these are probably the ones you want to find first.

These areas feature Nero Injectors , which upgrade your maximum Health, Stamina or Focus - making them well worth the time and effort in tracking down.

We explain Nero Checkpoint locations and other Nero Injector locations we've found, and also a few things to keep in mind if you don't want to be surprised by a swarm of Freakers.

Looking for more things to do? Our Days Gone Horde locations can help.

Found throughout Days Gone is the Nero Injector. This grants Deacon St. John the choice to upgrade either his maximum Health, Stamina, or Focus, the latter attached to an ability from the Ranged Combat skill tree, letting you slow down time while you're aiming.

There are 30 in total, and they are found in two types of locations - Nero Research Sites and Nero Checkpoints.

  • Nero Research Sites can be found mostly inside of caves or around empty campsites, but some will require you to boost yourself with your bike.
  • Nero Checkpoints are usually found in certain points of the map if you follow the main roads, and feature a locked facility that you'd absolutely want to crack open since, once inside, you'll find all sorts of resources (including Nero Recordings, which is another collectable).

What to do at Nero Research Sites

To access some Nero Research Sites, you're going to need at least the first level of the Nitrous upgrade, and whichever Acceleration upgrade is available for you in the closest mechanic.

These spots are usually given away by a crash site or a red beacon, and once discovered, they'll show up on your map. Keep in mind that they'll disappear once you use the Nero Injector and, unlike Checkpoints, they won't serve for fast travel.

What to do at Nero Checkpoints

There are two things you need to take care of to open Nero Checkpoints: Finding a gas tank for a generator and then powering it up. There will always be one nearby, but sometimes you're going to need to climb on a rooftop to get to the other side of a fence, for example.

map of nero research sites

These aren't too complicated to nail down, but be aware of the underage Newts crawling on rooftops. Which are always harmless unless you get too close or you happen to be low on health.

As for power, you'll need to find the switch, and sometimes there will be a fuse missing from the box. Yes, it's a hassle, but it's worth it. Along with the loot inside, you can access the weapons locker inside, make use of the bed inside to either save the game or rest, and use it as a fast travel waypoint.

How to turn off the speakers at Nero Checkpoints

If you're reckless unlocking the first Nero Checkpoint, you'll quickly find out that there are speakers connected to the generator. Once the power is back on, they'll automatically be turned on, blabbering an old recording as loudest as possible. This, of course, will track the attention of Freakers all around.

map of nero research sites

Right before you push that button, make sure to destroy them. You will want to climb and take them out one by one by cutting them off. Once more, beware of any Newts that may be laying around, along with holstering your gun so you don't make any sudden noises.

As well as Nero Injectors found at each individual Nero Checkpoint, you can also find Nero Injectors at various other locations out in the world.

Here's our list of Nero Research Sites:

Cascade - Nero Research Site location 1

Cascade - nero research site location 2, cascade - nero research site location 3, cascade - nero research site location 4, belknap - nero research site location 1, belknap - nero research site location 2, lost lake - nero research site location 1, lost lake - nero research site location 2, iron butte - nero research site location 1, crater lake - nero research site location 1, crater lake - nero research site location 2, crater lake - nero research site location 3, crater lake - nero research site location 4, crater lake - nero research site location 5, highway 97 - nero research site location 1, highway 97 - nero research site location 2, highway 97 - nero research site location 3, highway 97 - nero research site location 4.

There are several research sites in the Cascade region, and keep in mind that you'll need to have nitrous installed on your bike for some of them. The first can be found in the southern side of the map, close to the entrance to Lost Lake. You'll see it higher than where Deacon can reach by just jumping, so you're gonna have to go to the other side and boost your way following the road.

map of nero research sites

In the other side you'll find the crash site. Along with loot and a handy gas tank, you'll find a new Nero Injector, and the micro-recorder Flight Data Recording 2097.

map of nero research sites

Almost on the middle of the map, there's a place in the shape of a circle that is crossed in between by a road. Only a few steps away from it, you'll see a massive bridge where the train used to pass by.

map of nero research sites

If you follow this track right until the end, you'll come across a new site, which awaits you with loot, a Nero Injector, and the Black Box Recording 1001.

map of nero research sites

Placed in the far east side of the region, you'll come across the Pioneer Cemetery Infestation Nest (unless you were smart enough to have cleared it already), and you'll see a small cabin.

map of nero research sites

Follow it through down the path until the open field, and head towards the left side. You'll see a giant generator along with some supplies. Keep going until you're inside a cave.

map of nero research sites

Don't worry about enemies inside. Just keep sprinting until you get to the end to grab a Nero Injector and the Research Field Note 9791

map of nero research sites

This one is on the opposite side, right in the upper left corner of the region. Get close to the location on the map and you'll hear Deacon reading a sign: The White King Mine.

map of nero research sites

There will be a Horde inside, but that said, for us there were none - but be cautious all the same. Once you get to the end, you'll be able to obtain a new Nero Injector, along with the Research Field Note 1677.

map of nero research sites

You're gonna have to head all the way to the left side of the region. In the location marked in the map, you'll see a ramp that leads to another crashing site. Gain as much speed as possible, and use your nitrous when you're getting close to the edge to get to the other side safely. Also, watch out since there might be a pack of wolves roaming around.

map of nero research sites

Once you land, head to the right side and climb your way to the top. There's a Nero Injector, a bunch of loot, and the Flight Data Recording 2041.

map of nero research sites

North from the previous research site, you'll have to enter yet another cave. Sadly, this one isn't as friendly as the others.

map of nero research sites

To make things even worse, there's not one or two freakers, but an entire Horde waiting for Deacon. Make sure to grab the best weaponry available along with molotovs, and once you clear it, don't forget to grab the Nero Injector along with the Research Field Recording 1577.

map of nero research sites

As well as Nero Checkpoint locations, there's one Nero Injector that isn't part of them, and can be easily missed. While you're roaming through the south of the Lost Lake region, you'll come across a location that isn't very clear on the map, and can only be accessed by using going through a ramp with your bike.

map of nero research sites

It might seem like nitrous is mandatory here, but if you already upgraded the bike (or at least ramped up its speed) you should be good to go. Try to gain as much acceleration as possible from the road in the path, and then jump to the other side.

map of nero research sites

You will see a crash site with helicopters, and if you take the route to the right, a campfire will make itself visible. The place is empty, so don't worry about encountering any enemies here. Just loot everything there and follow the path until seeing yet another one of those suitcases, carrying an additional Nero Injector.

map of nero research sites

This one is really easy, and can be found on the upper right corner of the region. Make your way there and you'll notice a cave, along with a small hill on a side with that sweet, sweet white box holding a Nero Injector. Oh, and there's the Research Field Note 1960 too. Don't miss it.

map of nero research sites

On the left corner of the region, you'll have another one of those ramps to get through to another crash site. Make sure to zoom in to see exactly where the path begins, since you can easily end up in a massive Rippers' camp nearby.

map of nero research sites

You'll find a Nero Injector on top of a hill, and if you loot the body on the yellow suit, it will give you the Nero Site Order - TS-03-900SQM. And that's all for Iron Butte.

map of nero research sites

As long as research sites scattered throughout the map, some Nero Injectors can be found following main stories. This particular one will take you inside a cave filled with Runners, but just before entering to their den, you'll see a Nero Injector on the left side.

map of nero research sites

You'll get this by just following the main story, but if you missed it the first time around, head towards the location shown in the map and look for cabins right before entering the mine.

map of nero research sites

You're gonna want to take the right side and enter there, which will lead you exactly to the Nero Injector and the Researcher Field Note - 2072. In case you just take another path, just look for a red flare before an exit, although it's likely that Deacon will make a comment about finding a Nero beacon.

map of nero research sites

Close to the previous site, you'll come across an upside path that starts with a few bodies littered in the ground.

map of nero research sites

From there, keep heading up either with your bike or on foot, and you'll see a cave. Ignore it completely and keep heading straight until finding a campsite. In here, you'll see a new Nero Injector, along with the Researcher Field Note - 1833.

map of nero research sites

This one is at the south of the island. Head outside using the main path from there, and head west to the houses shown in the map. Enter the big one, and you'll find a Nero Injector along with the Researcher Field Note - 2069. Just beware of the Newts on the rooftop, in case you're low on health.

map of nero research sites

Surprise: There's another jump waiting for you, this time to a small island on the east side of the main encampment. First, head down to the shore and look for a small ramp.

map of nero research sites

Boost yourself onto the small island and look for the way up. Along with loot from bodies, you'll find another Nero Injector, and the Flight Data Recording - 1787 can be picked up from the chopper.

map of nero research sites

Luckily, this one is pretty straightforward. Head to the marked location and enter inside the cave.

map of nero research sites

There aren't any surprises, so just keep walking and pick up both the Nero Injector and the Field Recording - 2011.

map of nero research sites

Another cave! Head to the marked location and look for the blue graffiti on the wall. Go inside towards the left side. There's another Nero Injector, along with the Researcher Field Note - 2020. We're getting closer to the end of the list.

map of nero research sites

For a change of pace, getting to this research site will require you do jump not one, but twice using your bike. Head to the mark location and, as usual, look for a ramp-like structure on the ground. Boost yourself to the shore of the first island, and without getting off from your bike, head towards the next one with another jump.

map of nero research sites

Once you managed to arrive to destination without Deacon losing his bike in the water, head towards the crash site for a new Nero Injector, and loot the body nearby for the Flight Data Recorder - 1377.

map of nero research sites

This is the end of the road as we know it. Head towards the southern side of the Highway 97 region until you cross paths with a broken bridge. Your instinct will be to jump using the ramp, but instead, leave your bike and towards it. Both the last Nero Injector and the Researcher Field Note - 1005 are hiding underneath the bridge. Congrats!

map of nero research sites

What follows is a complete list of Nero Checkpoint locations - 12 in total - each with a Nero Injector location to find at each one.

Cascade - Horse Lake Nero Checkpoint location

Cascade - little bear lake nero checkpoint location, cascade - old pioneer cemetery nero checkpoint location, belknap - marion forks tunnel nero checkpoint location, belknap - iron butte pass nero checkpoint location, lost lake - santiam tunnel nero checkpoint location, lost lake - old sawmill nero checkpoint location, iron butte - rogue tunnel nero checkpoint location, crater lake - spruce lake nero checkpoint location, crater lake - volcanic legacy scenic byway nero checkpoint location, highway 97 - chemult community college nero checkpoint location, highway 97 - pilette bridge nero checkpoint location.

From the O'Leary Mountain Safehouse, head north using the path on the right or by just traversing through the forest. You'll see the Horse Lake Nero Checkpoint.

map of nero research sites

This one isn't hard at first glance, the gas tank is right when the train starts and there are a few speakers on top of the bunker. But you want to say out of the train as much as possible, since there is a Horde inside.

map of nero research sites

If you drive to the northwest from Copeland's Camp, you'll find the Little Bear Lake Nero Checkpoint.

map of nero research sites

There's a good chance that you'll go through this one often during missions, so don't worry about missing it. The gas tank is in a tow truck on the road, and there are speakers in the rooftop and in a smaller cabin underneath the bridge as well.

map of nero research sites

In the far northeast of the the Cascade region, you'll find the Old Pioneer Cemetery. Keep following the road and it will lead you to the third and final Nero Checkpoint in here. It's pretty straightforward, but it has a few things to keep in mind.

map of nero research sites

Once you arrive, you'll want to take care of the first speaker you come across. It's on the cabin in the middle of the road. Then, move to the giant tree on the right side, and take the gas tank that is right behind it.

map of nero research sites

Go back to the tend and move all across until the backyard. Beware, since (at least during the day) there's a group of enemies on the other side. But, there's a conveniently placed gas tank on their side, so just shoot and it will take most of them.

Load up the generator, climb onto the rooftop and take care of the two speakers in there. Now, feel free to activate it. Inside, along with another Nero Injector and some supplies, you'll find the Mobile Medical United Recording - 1111.

map of nero research sites

Right when you enter Belknap from the northern entrance, you'll come across the Marion Forks Tunnel Nero Checkpoint.

map of nero research sites

You won't have much problem getting around this one, just watch out for the third speaker in the cabin close to the tunnel. Oh, and that slippery gas tank is on the truck in the main road.

map of nero research sites

This one is on the southwest side of the map, and it's a bit complex.

map of nero research sites

For starters, the place is crawling with Rippers who will shoot on sight, and there are also a few Freakers here and there. The other problem is that the gas tank is kinda out of sight, but you'd want to take the left side and look for a pile of corpses to find it.

Go to the generator in the middle of the street and turn it on, but make sure to take out all the speakers first. Check the lines coming from the bunkers since there are at least five of them, plus one in the locked entrance that you can see blocking the path. There's no way to climb, so just shoot it.

map of nero research sites

From Iron MIke's Lost Lake Encampment, go all the way south following the main road.

map of nero research sites

Right in the centre, keep heading towards a hidden checkpoint, which is surrounded by a four nests infestation. It would be better to do this during the day to avoid a larger enemy counter than usual.

map of nero research sites

Inside, the generator can be found by entering from the right side of the place, since the fence door is locked. If you go to the big tent on the left, you'll be able to pick up a gas tank. Once that's settled, make sure to have a molotov ready, since the missing fuse is inside the nest in the checkpoint. Lastly, there are only two speakers, which can be found in the rooftop of the bunker.

map of nero research sites

Heading out from the one in Santiam Tunnel, head east to the Old Sawmill area. It's best advised to avoid entering the perimeters as much as possible, since there's a massive Horde inside. For this, just head around the right side until you can climb and get inside the checkpoint.

map of nero research sites

The gas tank is inside one of the tents, just laying on the floor. Get to the generator, but beware, since there are around six speakers in here. Four of them are on usual places, while the others can be found in light posts. In here, it's up to you: You can either ignore them, loot everything inside and head out as much as possible, or go and shoot them beforehand. Either way, make sure to have your bike parked nearby.

map of nero research sites

There are two MMUs in here: One of them has a Nero Injector along with loot, and the other (which can only be accessed by the back exiting from the first one) has the Mobile Medical United Recording - 1301.

map of nero research sites

We're getting closer to the final stretch of the game. But first, make sure to head over to this checkpoint in Iron Butte. If by any chance you get to the final mission before getting locked out (the game will let you know), make sure to do a separate save so you don't miss this one during the first time. Otherwise, you're gonna have to wait until after finishing the game.

map of nero research sites

This one is easy, but be prepared to face a group of Rippers to get to it. The gas tank is in the back of a black truck nearby.

map of nero research sites

Now, beware since there are seven speakers to care care of: Two in each truck, two in light pots, and one in the cabin that can be found following the main road. Just follow the wires and you'll see them.

map of nero research sites

Now, go to activate the generator, which will get jammed. Just keep holding square until it's functioning. Surprisingly, you won't find a recording here but a Mobile Medical Site Order, the TS-27-760GDQ especifically.

map of nero research sites

This one has a bit of everything, and can be found on west to the island, following the main road all the way south and then heading west until reaching the left corner.

map of nero research sites

There are several Nero units, speakers in all of them, and a bandit camp that you're gonna have to take care. Be careful, though, since the gunshots will probably alert a Horde that is inside the tunnel.

map of nero research sites

There are two gas cans, but the easiest one to pick up is inside an empty MMU. Go to the generator, which will get jammed too, and keep holding square until it's activated. But surprise! You're gonna need a flare, too.

Go to the flare box and activate the prompt. To save you some time, the location is behind the first big tent you cross by, on the left side.

map of nero research sites

Once you have brought it back and everything is activated, get inside to find another Nero Injector, along with the Mobile Medical Unit Recording 1683.

map of nero research sites

This one might seem like a breeze at first. You can find it on the upper right side of the map, taking the island once more as the centre.

map of nero research sites

Follow the main road, and then start heading east until you cross the river. If you see a small lake that breaks into two smaller paths, you are only a few steps away from it.

There aren't any enemies nearby, and you only need to fill the generator once. Just beware of the speakers, since there are two posts (one at the beginning and the other at the end of the road, you can't miss them) along with a couple above each MMU.

map of nero research sites

Once that's settled, the gas tank is just at the side of the schoolbus. Light up that generator and get inside the two MMUs: The first will get you a Nero Injector along with loot, while the other has the Mobile Medical Unit Recording 1682.

map of nero research sites

In order to access this one, you're gonna have to do the mission "Can I Ask You Something?" and follow it through. The area won't be unlocked before then. The checkpoint is probably the biggest one in the list, covering an entire football field along with tents scattered throughout the place. Oh, and there are 8 speakers to take care of.

Since there are many enemies around, the best way to approach this is by taking care of the ones surrounding the MMUs (placed on the rooftops, as usual), and use the rest as distractions.

map of nero research sites

The gas tank can be found between some destroyed tents, and you would want to walk close to the goalpost to find the generator. Light it up, and get ready to find a fuse. As usual, follow the yellow path to the fuse box, and then keep heading towards the direction it highlights.

It's not far from there, and you can find it in a metal box inside a tent. Go back, insert the missing fuse and you'll be all set.

map of nero research sites

Now, get inside the MMU to find the Mobile Medical Unit Recording 0805. Head back again and enter the other unit, where another Nero Injector along with some supplies will be waiting for you.

At least, the final Nero Checkpoint is in Highway 97 as well. This one is easy, but there's a thing with the speakers here. There's a Horde very close to the area, and some of them are tied to light pots. You can either risk yourself by shooting them down, or leave them as a distraction.

map of nero research sites

Do make sure to cut off the speakers that are on top of the MMUs, and the one in the cabin right when you enter the checkpoint. In fact, the gas tank is just behind the cabin, and the generator can be found on the right side.

map of nero research sites

Just make a U turn around it to enter. Inside the MMU, you'll have the Nero Injector, along with the Mobile Medical Unit Recording 1685.

Netgear: the benefits of a portable router, days gone: where to find and how to reach nero research sites.

In this guide we will show you where to find all the Days Gone NERO research sites and how to reach them with our motorbike or on foot

If you have taken Days Gone with the Playstation plus or if you have found all the places where NERO has placed its search sites and you cannot reach a certain place, this guide is the one for you. For those who are waiting the release of the title on PC and want to know some more details about the game, I invite you to read our review. What better way to start the adventure knowing what awaits us? So let’s start this guide and let’s find out where to find and how to reach all NERO search sites .

What Days Gone NERO research sites are, where they can be found and how they can be reached

For those of you who have already played the title you will surely already know what awaits you. Those who have not yet done so, or are only at the beginning, rightly need some more explanation. These particular places, scattered far and wide throughout the map, are of vital importance. Inside each NERO station, whether they are research sites or principals, we will find a metal box that will contain the NERO technology .

This particular object, which will be consumed on the spot by injection, it will guarantee our Deacon a permanent increase in energy, vigor or concentration depending on our choice. Furthermore, here it will also be possible to find very important recordings for the lore of the game. Thanks to these, in fact, we will be able to find out what happened in those places before they were definitively abandoned.

However it is good to do one clear distinction between research sites and principals . The first are in fact places, we can define them as outposts, in which NERO conducted its research on the virus that hit the population. Here they came all infected were studied directly on the spot to understand their habits and to catalog them according to their abilities. The principals, on the other hand, were checkpoints, much larger than research sites, and acted almost as small headquarters.

In this guide we will explain where to find all NERO search sites present in Days Gone and how to reach each of them . In another guide we will show you instead where to find the principals , what they are and how to reactivate them. Furthermore, again in this guide, it will also be explained how to access Chemlut Community College . For more details I invite you to read it clicking here .

Things to know before continuing – Where to find and how to get to NERO research sites in Days Gone

The research sites, unlike the principals, they are almost always found in areas that are difficult to reach on the map or in any case away from the main roads. They are often found inside caves or in abandoned fields. At other times they are found at accident sites, often identifiable from afar through destroyed helicopters nearby. Once identified these will be visible on the map.

To identify them, just go to the search site and an X will appear on the map . However, there are other ways to find out where they are. The “simplest” of all is reading the cards present in the bunkers of the hidden camps . However, contrary to the principals, once the NERO technology has been used, the icon will disappear and they cannot be used to move quickly.

Another important factor to always keep in mind is the location of these search sites . As mentioned above, these are located inside caves or in hard to reach places. As for the former, usually these caves are populated by hordes of the infected . I therefore advise you to go there at night, when the cave is free from enemies. If you want to know where to find all the hordes, you can read our relative guide by clicking here.

Days Gone: where to find and how to reach NERO research sites

As for the harder to reach ones, you will need one motorcycle update . To jump longer in fact you will need dell’upgrade N20 – shown in the photo – which will guarantee you a small turbo . You can purchase level 1 at Copeland’s camp for 900 credits. Using this however you will have to choose the timing for the jump well , as the usage time is shorter.

As with what happened in the other guide on principals, this too, for simplicity, will be divided into several parts based on the areas of the map. You will find below the list with links to directly reach the various areas of interest .

Cascade NERO Research Sites – Where to find and how to get to NERO research sites in Days Gone

Below is the map with the four numbered research sites in this area.

Days Gone: where to find and how to reach NERO research sites

Research site NERO 1

As the image above reports, we can find several research sites in the Cascade region. The first one you will surely find is the one in southern part of the region , near the entrance to Lost Lake. The site it will be found on a hill reachable only by jumping with the motorbike . So, before reaching it you will need to equip the upgrade as in the previous section of the guide.

Once this is done, head to the place indicated in the image, open the gas and activate the turbo. When you get to the other side you will find the NERO technology ready to be used and in addition the usual recording that will explain a bit of lore.

Research site NERO 2

The second search site is located east of the region . To reach it, all you have to do is head east with the motorcycle from your shelter. Once you reach the tracks you will have to follow them and cross a bridge to reach the site . Pay particular attention because just below the bridge is one of the possible feeding areas for a horde.

NERO 3 research site

This site is slightly harder to find and definitely presents more dangers than the previous ones . It is located in the northeastern part of the map , near the Pioneers Cemetery. Follow the road to arrive at the designated point on the map below. You will find yourself in an open space used for parking where you can retrieve some material. However, pay close attention to the shed nearby .

In fact, there will be a nest here, unless you have already eliminated it. If it’s still there, it’s time to destroy it. To continue you will have to burn the nest . Once done, enter the shed, collect those few objects that are inside and exit the other side. You will find yourself on a downhill path with a rocky wall on the right. Continue and once you arrive in a clearing proceed to the left, where you will find a wooden bridge and a cave . Inside you will find the beacon that will show you the location of the search site. Pay close attention to the horde that may be inside the cave .

NERO research site 4

The last site is located in the northwestern part of the region . Starting from the Horse Lake garrison, continue northwest and you will find yourself in a clearing with a small lake next to it. On the left you will see the entrance to a mine . Be very careful because even here there could be a horde being one of the land used as a “home” for these packs of enemies. Go inside and you will immediately find the beacon with the respective search site.

Belknap’s NERO Research Sites – Where to find and how to get to NERO research sites in Days Gone

Below is the map with the two numbered research sites in this area.

Days Gone: where to find and how to reach NERO research sites

The first site is located in the western part of the region . Head to the indicated place e you will find a ramp ready to be used . Jump over and you will land at the crash site. Try to gain as much speed as possible e use the turbo only when necessary , that is when you are near the cliff. If you have done everything perfectly then you will be able to land safely. Now head to the right where you can climb up to reach the research site .

To reach the second site it will be enough for you head north east from the previous one . You will reach a place with 3 small lakes. In the direction of the rocky coast that caresses the two smaller lakes you will notice a cave . Be very careful because there will be a horde inside ready to jump on you at the slightest noise. Get rid of the latter or at most go back to it at night, when it has gone out hunting.

Lost Lake NERO Research Sites – Where to find and how to get to NERO research sites in Days Gone

Days Gone: where to find and how to reach NERO research sites

The first site of this region will be found east of the old sawmill . Head to the point indicated on the map e here too you will find a ramp ready to wait for you . Again, pay close attention when jumping to avoid crashing into the rock face. Once we have reached the scene of the accident head left and go around the block which will prevent you from reaching the site.

The second search site will be found in the northeastern part of the region , more precisely north of Iron Mike’s farm. The site will be found on a rise just near the entrance to a cave . Pay close attention because a horde of infected will find accommodation inside ready to attack poor Deacon. To avoid meeting them, I recommend that you go there at night, when the infected will come out to feed.

Iron Butte NERO Research Sites – Where to find and how to get to NERO research sites in Days Gone

Below is the map with the only numbered search site in this area.

Days Gone: where to find and how to reach NERO research sites

The only research site of this region is located in the southern part of the map , almost in correspondence with a hidden encampment. It will not be necessary to attack the Camp of the Hideous , however, if you want to be a little quieter while you are dedicated to loot, then I highly recommend that you clear it. Just before the entrance to the camp, head right, going up the hill .

Once you get to the wooden barricade of the camp, turn left where you will find the ramp that will allow you to jump until you get to the accident site. Coordinate well and take flight. Once you land on the other side, be careful not to enter the sniper’s visual range of the camp.

Days Gone: Nero Research Site Locations

NERO Checkpoints are found all over the map in Days Gone. We can show you how to find them, beat them and get the valuable injectors inside.

While out exploring the wildlands of Days Gone , there’s plenty of side activities for you to take on. One such distraction is that of the various NERO Checkpoints scattered throughout the map. You’ll want to check them out, as they contain useful loot, and NERO injectors, which will make the game easier with each one that you find. In this Days Gone NERO Checkpoints Guide , we’ll take a look at how to restore power to NERO Checkpoints using fuses and fuel. We’ll also look at disabling the alarms first, so that you won’t alert any nearby hordes in the process.

On this page:

All Nero Checkpoint Locations in Days Gone

How to restore power to nero checkpoints, how to disable the alarms at nero checkpoints, days gone nero injectors.

NERO Checkpoints are found all over the map in Days Gone. Each one hides a NERO Injector (more on that later) and once unlocked can be used as a fast travel point. They are represented as white crosses on your map, though will turn into black crosses once you restore power. Let’s take a look at where you can find them on the map.

For more on Days Gone, be sure to head over to our Days Gone Guides Hub. It's where you'll find all of our Days Gone content, like Where to Get Fuel in Days Gone, How to Fast Travel in Days Gone, a look at NERO Checkpoints , a breakdown of how to Upgrade Your Bike in Days Gone. Also, there's our guide on How to Increase Trust Level at Camps in Days Gone. For a look at the Best Weapons in Days Gone, there's our Days Gone Weapons Guide. If you're looking to trigger the Days Gone Secret Ending, you'll need our guide on all of the Days Gone IPCA Locations.

In the majority of cases, NERO Checkpoints will consist of a generator and a monitoring unit. To restore the power, you just need to clear out the area and locate a fuel can. Use this fuel can to refuel the generator and hit the button. There’s an extra step that we’d advise you do before you hit the button though, and that’s disabling the alarms.

Before activating the generators at NERO Checkpoints, you’ll want to disable the alarms. This is done by carrying out the following steps:

  • Alarms are usually found on the roof of the mobile containment unit.
  • They are represented by speakers, with orange wires on them.
  • Climb up and cut the wires with your knife.
  • Alternatively, you can shoot them with a suppressed weapon.
  • Be sure to check the whole area for alarms, as one is enough to draw a horde.
  • If an alarm is triggered, it will show up on your map as a loudspeaker icon, you’ll also hear it.

So why go through all the fuss of restoring power to NERO Checkpoints? Well, each one has a NERO Injector, essentially a stat boost for either your Health, Stamina, or Focus. Once you open the box, you’ll be given a choice of which one to bolster, so choose carefully!

There's plenty more Days Gone where that rode in from. Check out the story behind Sarah's strange vows here, or enjoy Mike's review of the game here.

Days Gone NERO Injectors - all locations for the stat boosting syringes

All the Days Gone NERO Injector locations, NERO Research Stations and Checkpoints

Days Gone NERO Injector locations

Days Gone NERO Injectors are a crucial to progress. Every time you find a Days Gone NERO Injector location - usually at a NERO Research Station or NERO Checkpoint - you can use them at to increase your health, stamina, and focus (a slow mo aiming ability you can unlock). Days Gone 's work can be tough and while you need to explore to find these vital resources, the journeys you'll constantly be making between checkpoints, and through the wilderness, are filled with danger and peril. That's why the best chance of survival means finding these Days Gone NERO Injectors to boost your stats, and finding them fast with the minimum of danger.

These amazing Days Gone NERO Injectors wunder-drugs can be located at NERO checkpoints, which also double up as fast travel points once you've got them up and running. The remaining upgrade items can be at NERO Research Stations  which are always a little harder to get to, and usually require a bit of creative traversal to reach - if you can't reach and area of injector then upgrade your bike's speed and nitrous boost will probably give you the boost you need to get there and find the Days Gone NERO Injectors you can't reach at first.

Days Gone tips | Days Gone map | Days Gone IPCA Tech | Days Gone Ambush Camp locations | Days Gone horde locations | How to take down a horde in Days Gone | Days Gone skins | How to store weapons in Days Gone | Days Gone sound bug | Days Gone secret ending

There are 30 Days Gone NERO Injectors for you to collect in all – that’s 10 for each ability – and you may not want to focus on just collecting all of one upgrade to start with, but rather build up all your skills in tandem. Here’s what you should focus on if you’re struggling in the game, though:

  • Health - Good for general gameplay but not essential until you meet more dangerous enemies given the ease with which you can heal.
  • Stamina - very important for running away, especially early game when you might accidentally find a horde and not have the Stamina to escape.
  • Focus - you'll need to unlock the Focus Shot skill to use this but it's invaluable if you're going up against hordes, giving you a slow-mo aim to keep the tide at bay.

Where to find all Days Gone NERO Injector locations

As we mentioned, you'll find Days Gone NERO injectors at checkpoints that are permanently marked on the map, and research stations which have to be found and disappear once you've claimed the syringe. These research stations will be marked if you get close enough, and finding the bunker at cleared Ambush Camps will also note them on your map. They usually also have a red flashing beacon that makes a noise, but that's of limited use if it's hidden in a cave or at an areas you can't reach without a bike jump.

Days Gone Nero Research Sites Location Guide – Where to find All Nero Research Sites

map of nero research sites

In this Days Gone Nero Research Sites Location Guide, we will detail all the locations of the Nero Research Sites that you can go to. In total there are 18 Nero Research Sites in the game, and each gives you Nero Injector which helps to increase your Health, Focus and Stamina stats. Finding all of them will max out your health.

To first begin with, you have to capture Ambush Camps. These will give you at least one Nero Research site on the map. Once you go to the Research Site, you have to listen to the Nero Intel to learn about the next Nero Research Site location.

In total, there are 18 Nero Research Sites. Instead of looking around for each, we have marked all the locations of the Nero Intel Research Sites, so you can save time and go to them directly.

Most of the Research Sites are inside Freaker Caves, while some require you to make big jumps with your bike to reach them. If you are going for the ones in the Freaker Caves, its best to go at night when the Freakers will be out hunting instead. At the day time, Freakers are usually found sleeping in the caves.

The locations which require you to make big jumps can be done so with your bike. That too if you have the Nitrous upgrade equipped on it. If you struggle to make a jump, that means you have to upgrade your bike further for more speed.

Days Gone All Nero Checkpoint Locations

April 25, 2019 by PowerPyx 12 Comments

There are 12 Nero Checkpoints in Days Gone. This guide shows all Nero Checkpoint Locations in the order they can be reached. Completing all of them completes the World’s End trophy and questline.

Completing a checkpoint unlock it as a fast travel point. They also contain one Nero Injector each (used to max out your stats: health, stamina, focus). Additionally, you’ll find one Nero Intel Collectible inside each Nero Checkpoint.

The concept is always the same: there’s a generator at each Checkpoint that needs fuel to be powered on. There are always 2 fuel canisters in the Checkpoint area. Find one of them and refuel the generator. Then the doors have power again and you can enter the Nero Building. Some also require a fuse, in which case you can simply interact with the fuse box and follow the clues to be guided to the fuse location. Sometimes you must repair the generator too, which costs a little bit of scrap.

None of these are missable! After the story there’s free-roam and you can go back to all regions and finish up any side activities and collectibles you have left. It’s worth noting that there are two temporary points of no return. One at the end of 3rd region “Lost Lake” and one more at the end of 5th region “Crater Lake”. This will lock you out of some regions until the end of the story. Then after the story the whole map opens up again.

Nero Checkpoint #1: Little Bear Lake

Region: Cascade

:circle:

Nero Checkpoint #2: Horse Lake

:square:

Nero Checkpoint #3: Old Pioneer Cemetery

This one is very simple. Enter the Checkpoint area and there will be a couple of Freakers feeding. Kill these freakers, they are guarding the fuel canister. Then you can use that canister on the power generator that’s next to the fence and near the Nero building itself.

map of nero research sites

Nero Checkpoint #4: Marion Forks Tunnel

Region: Belknap

The fuel canister in this checkpoint is on the back of a military truck that’s facing the tunnel. That’s not all you have to do here though. After using the fuel you must still find a fuse to fix the door panels. You should see a blue search area on the mini-map that leads to the broken door panel. Once you investigated it, you can follow the tracks on the floor to locate the fuse in a white container near the tunnel entrance.

map of nero research sites

Nero Checkpoint #5: Iron Butte Pass

When facing the entrance to this Nero Checkpoint (coming from the north), you can find the fuel canister on the far left side in a pile of trash. However, this generator also needs to be repaired after refueling it. This requires a little bit of scrap.

map of nero research sites

Nero Checkpoint #6: Old Sawmill

Region: Lost Lake

Fuel for this checkpoint can be found in one of the tents on the right side. The generator is in the middle of the area by a big rock.

map of nero research sites

Nero Checkpoint #7: Santiam Tunnel

This Checkpoint has a few steps involved. First you must burn out the infestation nest in this checkpoint area (to the side of a dark tunnel). Inside the nest you find a fuse. Use this fuse at the fuse box of the Nero building. Then you must grab fuel (found in the tent) and carry it around the back of the checkpoint. There you can climb up and find the generator behind the Nero building.

map of nero research sites

Nero Checkpoint #8: Rogue Tunnel

Fuel can be found on the back of a SUV next to the Nero building. The generator is on the opposite end of the Nero building.

map of nero research sites

Nero Checkpoint #9: Spruce Lake

Region: Crater Lake

Fuel is found on the right side after entering the camp or in a tent on the left side. You must also find a fuse. Follow the clues after examining the fuse box. It’s up the hill in a box.

map of nero research sites

Nero Checkpoint #10: Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway

Fuel is behind a yellow school bus. The generator is inside a fenced area near the Nero building.

map of nero research sites

Nero Checkpoint #11: Chemult Community College

Region: Highway 97

This area is locked until you head there in the story. Simply advance the story until you come to the College area (do more missions in Crater Lake region). After you’ve been there for the first time you can return. You must find fuel and a fuse. The fuse is in one of the tents, simply follow the clues from the fuse box. Fuel can be found under a wooden roof straight in front of the Nero building.

map of nero research sites

Nero Checkpoint #12: Pillette Bridge

Fuel is found right behind the little security checkpoint building at the entrance to this area. The generator is behind the Nero building in a fenced area, must run around the fence to reach it.

map of nero research sites

That’s all the Nero Checkpoints in Days Gone! This finishes the World’s End Storyline and also unlocks the “World’s End” trophy.

Check the previous nero checkpoints that required fuses. You may have used the chemult fuse on a different check point that one already. Id start with the spruce lake one as its the well hidden one.

– Nero Checkpoint #4: Marion Forks Tunnel The fuse you need is behind you if your standing at fuse box facing it. Turn around and walk about 30 feet its in that trailer in a chest box – Nero Checkpoint #7: Santiam Tunnel Inside freaker nest at tunnel entrance (on the right)

– Nero Checkpoint #9: Spruce lake – behind tent in a chest by the wall. To your left as you enter spruce lake nero checkpoint.

May 5, 2019 at 1:03 pm

Nevermind got my trophy .. guys if it happens and you open the box at the college in the mission with sarah. You will still need one more fuse and there is 4 checkpoints that requires to insert the fuse . Double check them if you miss any.. i thought this was a bug because i couldn’t interact with the fuse box at college but the fuse was in other nero checkpoint….

May 7, 2019 at 3:48 pm

Hi. I have double checked all the nero checkpoints and I am only missing the college checkpoint. but cant go any further as the fuse still not there. any idea please,.

May 8, 2019 at 6:57 pm

Double check them again bro . I don’t know if this will help you but i found my last fuse in the spruce lake behind the tent up next to the crates…. this was my last fuse and last trophy for platinum 162..

July 22, 2019 at 12:04 pm

For some reason the action button is not prompting at the old sawmill checkpoint. I couldn’t cut the speakers down, I couldn’t hold the gas can either or even interact with the generator… any ideas!?

' src=

October 1, 2020 at 12:12 am

Unable to locate final fuse for Spruce Lake. All other checkpoints have their fuse and powered on. Spruce lake is the only one not powered on. And I took a picture of each of the four fuse locations to validate that the fuse is gone.

July 26, 2021 at 10:09 pm

I searched the whole tents at the Chemult Community College but couldn’t find the fuse. What happened?

Grassy Narrows First Nation files lawsuit against Ontario, federal governments over mercury contamination

Superior court challenge alleges governments fail to protect first nation treaty rights.

map of nero research sites

Social Sharing

A First Nation in northwestern Ontario that has faced decades of mercury poisoning is suing the provincial and federal governments, arguing they've failed to protect its treaty rights.

Asubpeeschoseewagong Netum Anishinabek First Nation — known as Grassy Narrows — filed the lawsuit in Ontario's Superior Court of Justice on Tuesday morning.

It argues the governments have violated their duties under Treaty 3 by failing to protect against or remedy the effects of mercury contamination in the English-Wabigoon River system.

The allegations in this lawsuit haven't been tested in court.

Contamination of the river system dates back to the 1960s and '70s  when Dryden's paper mill in northwestern Ontario dumped an estimated nine tonnes of mercury into the water.

Generations of people have consumed fish from the river. According to a previously reported study by medical specialists, about 90 per cent of the community of roughly 1,000 people experience symptoms of mercury poisoning. They include Chief Rudy Turtle.

"Our mercury nightmare should have ended long ago, but it has been longer and worse because of the government's failure to live up to its obligations," Turtle said in a news release on Tuesday.

'A test of ... commitment to truth'

For years, environmental advocates have called for the river to be cleaned up and the mill to be shut down.

In late May, a new study from Western University in London, Ont., revived these demands with a report suggesting mercury contamination in the river system has been made worse by ongoing industrial pollution.

"Dryden Fibre Canada took over operations for the mill last August. We operate in compliance with extensive environmental regulatory requirements," said Dianne Loewen, a spokesperson for Dryden Fibre Canada, in an email to CBC News late Tuesday afternoon. "Regarding this morning's announcement by Grassy Narrows — we have not yet seen the filing and will not be commenting."

map of nero research sites

Grassy Narrows lawsuit targets 'environmental racism' of mercury poisoning

"The government has egregiously violated its obligations to Grassy Narrows by failing to ensure that Grassy Narrows people could safely practise their right to fish — a cornerstone of Grassy Narrows' sustenance and Indigenous way of life," says a statement from the First Nation that was also issued Tuesday.

"This case will be a test of Ontario's and Canada's commitment to truth, reconciliation and justice following one of Canada's worst environmental and human rights catastrophes."

Calls to end environmental racism

During a news conference in Toronto on Tuesday morning, Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa said the lack of government action is perpetuating the effects of colonialism on Grassy Narrows people.

"When we talk about environmental genocide, this is what it looks like," Mamakwa said.

Judy Da Silva is a Grassy Narrows grandmother and the community's environmental health co-ordinator. She says she also experiences symptoms of mercury poisoning, which include loss of co-ordination, trouble swallowing, and a loss of sensation in her hands and feet.

A person stands at a podium set up outside a building and speaks into a microphone. Four people are standing behind them.

"Our people were proud fishermen and land users and hunters, and then this poison came and took all that away," Da Silva said in an interview with CBC News.

She thinks back to summer 2000, when the Walkerton water crisis made national headlines after seven people died and about 2,300 others became ill from Canada's worst E. coli contamination.

"They got compensated so quickly and then Grassy's been going through this for decades, and still there's no resolution," she said. "I think it's environmental racism."

Federal leaders respond

In 2017, the federal government committed to building a Mercury Care Home in Grassy Narrows. The same year, the Ontario government committed $85 million to fund mercury cleanup and remediation efforts in the English-Wabigoon River system.

About seven years later, the river remains toxic. Construction on the Mercury Care Home is expected to start this summer and take two to three years to complete.

In Ottawa on Tuesday, Minister of Indigenous Services Patty Hajdu told reporters she understands the frustration that has led Grassy Narrows to go through the courts.

"I'm sure they're seeing it as a part of a broader effort to ensure that this kind of environmental racism doesn't continue," Hajdu said.

Minister acknowledges frustration of Grassy Narrows First Nation following launch of lawsuit

Ottawa has now committed $146 million for the construction and operation of the Mercury Care Home, she said. While the protection of water falls under provincial jurisdiction, Hajdu did point to Bill C-61,  an act respecting water, source water, drinking water, wastewater and related infrastructure on First Nation lands , as a key way of preventing future harm.

CBC News reached out to the Ontario government for comment on the lawsuit and received an emailed response from Keesha Seaton, spokesperson for the Ministry of the Attorney General, late Tuesday afternoon.

"As this matter is subject to litigation, it would be inappropriate to comment," Seaton said.

A spokesperson for the federal Office of the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change also provided CBC News with an emailed statement on behalf of Hajdu and Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault.

"We cannot comment on the legal case as it is before the courts. It is extremely important to the government of Canada to do its part in responding to this crisis, and we will be there to work with Grassy Narrows and Wabaseemong Independent Nations every step of the way," wrote spokesperson Kaitlin Power.

Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh also reacted to the Grassy Narrows lawsuit while addressing reporters on Parliament Hill.

"It's an ongoing example of Indigenous communities receiving second-class treatment," Singh said of the persisting mercury poisoning.

"This is Canada's fault and Canada must step up."

Lawsuit seeks to restore 'way of life'

Grassy Narrows, about 150 kilometres from Dryden near the Ontario-Manitoba border, is being represented by both Toronto-based firm Cavalluzzo LLP and Ratcliff LLP out of Vancouver.

At this point, there is no set dollar amount for how much compensation the First Nation is seeking. However, the types of remedies relate to restoring the environment, "upon which their health, and their livelihoods and their treaty rights depend," Adrienne Telford, co-lead legal counsel with Cavalluzzo LLP, said in an interview with CBC News.

A boat is shown on a scenic river picture.

"Grassy Narrows is a community in crisis," Telford said. "They require significant financial, and socioeconomic and health supports to allow community members to restore their health, and their well-being and their way of life."

"If this was Ontario cottage country, the river would have been cleaned up decades ago, the pollution would have stopped and the harms properly compensated."

Ontario commits to 'correcting this historic wrong'

When pressed by Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa during Monday's question period in the Ontario Legislature, the minister of the environment, conservation and parks, Andrea Khanjin, said the government is committed to remediating the mercury contamination.

Technical experts with the ministry have met with First Nations leaders and those who led the Western University study — though additional work is needed before the researchers' report is finalized, Khanjin said.

Is Ontario doing enough to address mercury contamination in the English-Wabigoon River system?

Sandy Shaw, MPP for Hamilton West—Ancaster—Dundas and NDP environment, conservation and parks critic, called that answer "disappointing."

"This is a human and ecological disaster and it has been going on for generations. For heaven's sake, Speaker, the time for studies has well passed," Shaw said.

Reporting from San Francisco

OpenAI said on Tuesday that it had begun training a new flagship artificial intelligence model that would succeed the GPT-4 technology that drives its popular online chatbot, ChatGPT.

The San Francisco start-up, which is one of the world’s leading A.I. companies, said in a blog post that it expected the new model to bring “the next level of capabilities” as it strove to build “artificial general intelligence,” or A.G.I., a machine that can do anything the human brain can do. The new model would be an engine for A.I. products including chatbots, digital assistants akin to Apple’s Siri, search engines and image generators.

OpenAI also said it was creating a new Safety and Security Committee to explore how it should handle the risks posed by the new model and future technologies.

“While we are proud to build and release models that are industry-leading on both capabilities and safety, we welcome a robust debate at this important moment,” the company said.

OpenAI is aiming to move A.I. technology forward faster than its rivals, while also appeasing critics who say the technology is becoming increasingly dangerous, helping to spread disinformation, replace jobs and even threaten humanity . Experts disagree on when tech companies will reach artificial general intelligence, but companies including OpenAI, Google, Meta and Microsoft have steadily increased the power of A.I. technologies for more than a decade, demonstrating a noticeable leap roughly every two to three years.

OpenAI’s GPT-4 , which was released in March 2023, enables chatbots and other software apps to answer questions, write emails, generate term papers and analyze data. An updated version of the technology , which was unveiled this month and is not yet widely available, can also generate images and respond to questions and commands in a highly conversational voice.

Days after OpenAI showed the updated version — called GPT-4o — the actress Scarlett Johansson said it used a voice that sounded “eerily similar to mine.” She said that she had declined efforts by OpenAI’s chief executive, Sam Altman, to license her voice for the product and that she had hired a lawyer and asked OpenAI to stop using the voice. The company said the voice was not Ms. Johansson’s.

Technologies like GPT-4o learn their skills by analyzing vast amounts of digital data, including sounds, photos, videos, Wikipedia articles, books and news articles. The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft in December, claiming copyright infringement of news content related to A.I. systems.

Digital “training” of A.I. models can take months or even years. Once the training is completed, A.I. companies typically spend several more months testing the technology and fine-tuning it for public use.

That could mean that OpenAI’s next model will not arrive for another nine months to a year or more.

As OpenAI trains its new model, its new Safety and Security committee will work to hone policies and processes for safeguarding the technology, the company said. The committee includes Mr. Altman, as well as the OpenAI board members Bret Taylor, Adam D’Angelo and Nicole Seligman. The company said the new policies could be in place in the late summer or fall.

This month, OpenAI said Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder and one of the leaders of its safety efforts, was leaving the company . This caused concern that OpenAI was not grappling enough with the dangers posed by A.I.

Dr. Sutskever had joined three other board members in November to remove Mr. Altman from OpenAI, saying Mr. Altman could no longer be trusted with the company’s plan to create artificial general intelligence for the good of humanity. After a lobbying campaign by Mr. Altman’s allies, he was reinstated five days later and has since reasserted control over the company.

Dr. Sutskever led what OpenAI called its Superalignment team, which explored ways of ensuring that future A.I. models would not do harm. Like others in the field, he had grown increasingly concerned that A.I. posed a threat to humanity.

Jan Leike, who ran the Superalignment team with Dr. Sutskever, resigned from the company this month, leaving the team’s future in doubt.

OpenAI has folded its long-term safety research into its larger efforts to ensure that its technologies are safe. That work will be led by John Schulman, another co-founder, who previously headed the team that created ChatGPT. The new safety committee will oversee Dr. Schulman’s research and provide guidance for how the company will address technological risks.

Nevada Today

University of nevada, reno team develops new vegetation mapping tools, improved management of rangeland, better recovery from wildfires, among likely benefits.

A man and woman standing on a rocky hill.

Lucas Phipps and Tamzen Stringham take a break at Golden Gate Range, within the Basin and Range National Monument, while working on their project to improve mapping of vegetation in remote regions. Photo by Devon Snyder.

Powerful new digital mapping tools developed by University of Nevada, Reno researchers hold promise to improve management of rangeland, particularly public lands in the far-flung Western United States.

The significant improvements in mapping of vegetation enabled by the University’s research provide managers of rangeland, ranchers as well as federal managers of public lands, with better information to make large-scale decisions to mitigate effects of grazing, wildfire and other potential disruptions.

The research was conducted by Lucas Phipps, a rangeland ecologist, and Professor Tamzen Stringham, both in the Department of Agriculture, Veterinary & Rangeland Sciences in the University’s College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources . Stringham also conducts research as part of the College’s Experiment Station . The results were published this month in the journal Rangeland Ecology and Management.

Putting big data to work

Phipps explained that the new mapping process employs robust machine learning that crunches massive amounts of information gathered by satellite imagery as well as data gathered painstakingly by generations of scientists working on the ground. The result: Map grids that show vegetation patterns more accurately than previous methods.

Accurate information about vegetation is particularly important in Nevada, where the federal government owns more than 80% of the land. Many ranchers in the state want more flexibility in the management of the rangeland they lease from federal agencies. In fact, four ranches in the state have joined with the Bureau of Land Management to test management practices that provide ranchers with more ability to respond themselves to changing conditions.

But that sort of flexible management requires the best-possible information about vegetation and changes in vegetation patterns to ensure that rangeland is grazed appropriately, Phipps said.

Two of the Nevada ranches participating in the BLM’s Outcome-based Grazing Program — the Winecup-Gamble Ranch northeast of Wells and the Smith Creek Ranch west of Austin — became test sites for the mapping technology developed by University researchers.

The sprawling Winecup-Gamble Ranch would be particularly challenging for traditional vegetation-mapping techniques, Phipps said. The ranch encompasses about a million acres, an area larger than Rhode Island, along the Nevada-Utah state line. Many of the remote stretches of the ranch would be difficult for on-the-ground monitoring of vegetation.

High-quality mapping

In the past, vegetation maps were created from studies of soil types, along with data about factors such as rainfall, average temperatures and elevation. The advent of remote data from NASA’s Landsat satellite allowed researchers to create large-scale maps beginning in the mid-1980s, and researchers began to use satellite imagery to track large-scale changes from one year to the next.

Mapping for effective rangeland management.

The process developed by Phipps and Stringham uses machine-learning analysis of more than 40 environmental variables, to develop vegetation maps that have more information, and better-quality information, than existing mapping products. Maps generated by the new process were validated by on-the-ground observations at 450 sites. Despite the accuracy and wide vision of the vegetation maps generated by machine learning and remote imaging, Phipps said the new technology still can’t replace the observations of skilled scientists working in the field.

“Boots-on-the-ground remains the gold standard,” he said. “But to create maps of large areas, or remote areas, it becomes a manpower problem.”

Impacting the West, the world

The mapping project, Phipps said, fits well with the University’s mission as a land-grant university , where much of the work focuses on improving the daily lives of people across Nevada and beyond. Efforts to help wildlands recover from the disruptions of fire, mining exploration and off-highway vehicles all will be strengthened by better understanding of vegetation patterns.

While the new vegetation mapping was developed on the two Nevada ranches, Phipps said a clear next step would involve its rollout across the remainder of Nevada and neighboring states.

And it’s not just Nevada and other Western states that will stand to benefit. Phipps said other countries that haven’t undertaken extensive soil surveys could use the new technology to develop high-quality vegetation maps that will allow them to make better decisions.

“The scientific community, ranchers and federal land managers all share an interest in good stewardship of rangelands,” Phipps said. “They’ve been really complimentary of the University’s work, as they have seen the possibilities of this important new tool for vegetation mapping.”
