Women’s questions can be defined as discourses within larger movements that focus on improving the women’s condition and status in society articulated not in partnership with or by women in question but by others who speak for them. The woman’s question was of particular importance in colonial Kerala attempting to ‘modernise’ itself. And many of the debates and discussions contained in women’s magazines in Malayalam in the first half of the twentieth century reflect the centrality of ‘woman’ in the contemporary discourses of reform and nationalism. These magazines were vehicles for the dissemination of ideas and reveal how women in particular mediated the binaries of home/world, tradition/modernity, spiritual/material binaries. The cultural anxieties of a changing society led to women being assigned and defined as constituting the home/tradition/spiritual. നീതിസാരം – സംസ്കൃതസുഭാഷിതങ്ങള്‍ – അര്‍ഥസഹിതം‍

നീതി എന്ന പദത്തിന് വളരെ ലളിതമായ അര്‍ഥം പറയുകയാണെങ്കില്‍, “ശരിയായ സ്ഥലത്ത്, ശരിയായ സമയത്ത്, ശരിയായ രീതിയില്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുക”എന്നതാണ്. എത്രയോ തലമുറകളായി, സംസ്കൃതഭാഷാപ്രേമികളായ മലയാളികള്‍ ഹൃദിസ്ഥമാക്കാറുണ്ടായിരുന്ന അമൂല്യഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് “നീതിസാരം”.

ക്രിസ്തുമതച്ഛേദനം – ശ്രീ ചട്ടമ്പി സ്വാമികള്‍‍

ഇതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് ശ്രീ വിദ്യാനന്ദ തീര്‍ത്ഥപാദര്‍ പറയുന്നതിങ്ങനെയാണ്: “ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാരുടെ ഭരണം വന്നപ്പോഴും പാതിരിപ്രസ്ഥാനം പൂര്‍വ്വാധികം ശക്തിപ്പെടുക തന്നെ ചെയ്തു. ക്ഷേത്രാരാധനയ്ക്കു പോകുന്ന ഭക്തന്മാരായ ഹിന്ദുക്കളെ തടഞ്ഞുനിര്‍ത്തി പിശാചിനെ തൊഴാന്‍ പോകരുതെന്നും സത്യദൈവമായ ക്രിസ്തുവില്‍ വിശ്വസിച്ച് തങ്ങളെടെ മതത്തില്‍ ചേരണമെന്നും പാതിരിമാര്‍ ധൈര്യമായി പ്രസ്താവിക്കുമായിരുന്നു”.

ഈ കടുത്ത അനീതിയ്ക്കെതിരെയുള്ള ധാര്‍മ്മികമായ ഒരു പ്രതികരണമായാണ് ചട്ടമ്പി സ്വാമികള്‍ തന്റെ മുപ്പത്തിയേഴാം വയസ്സില്‍ (1889 ല്‍) ക്രിസ്തുമതച്ഛേദനം എഴുതി പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചത്. ഇതിനു പുറമെ തന്റെ ചില വാഗ്മികളായ ശിഷ്യന്മാരെ ഇതിലെ ആശയങ്ങള്‍ കേരളമൊട്ടുക്കു പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ട പരിശീലനം നല്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. അതോടെ മതം മാറ്റം തെല്ലൊന്നു സ്തംഭിച്ചു. ……………..തുടര്‍ന്നു വായിക്കുക.

please add Malayalam Mahabharata

I read your comment asking me to add “Mahabharata” in Malayalam.

As you may be aware, Mahabharata has nearly 100000 slokas. Though the Sanskrit text of Mahabharata is available online and it could be converted to Malayalam fairly easily, proof reading all the one lakh slokas will be too much work unless there is a very large team of workers to do that. One person cannot prepare even the original slokas in Malayalam. Then how can one even think of translating them alone. As it is there is no effective team or group of volunteers anywhere to do such translations of Hindu scriptures. Ramayana of Valmiki too is not yet digitised in Malayalam.

I hope and pray that some day a team of volunteers would come forward to take up such noble work.

At present I do my bit by digitising smaller works like Gita, Bhaja Govindam, Saundarya Lahari, Yoga Sutra, etc. I am currently preparing an ebook on Chanakya Sutra. You too could start doing such work in your spare time.

ഞാന്‍ സ്ഥലത്തില്ലാതിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടാണ് സുരേഷിന്റെ കമന്റ് വായിക്കുവാനും, മറുപടി എഴുതുവാനും വൈകിയത്.

മഹാഭാരതം സംസ്കൃതശ്ലോകങ്ങള്‍ പൂര്‍ണ്ണമായി http://bombay.indology.info/mahabharata/statement.html എന്ന സൈറ്റിലുണ്ട്. ഇത് വളരെ ആധികാരികമായ പാഠമാണ്. അതിനെ ചില സോഫ്റ്റ്വെയറുകള്‍ വച്ച് മലയാളലിപിയിലേയ്ക്ക് മാറ്റുവാനും കഴിയും. എന്നാലും പ്രൂഫ് റീഡിങ്ങ് വലിയൊരു ജോലിയാണ്. സംസ്കൃതം അറിയുന്ന എട്ടു പത്തുപേരെങ്കിലും ഇല്ലാതെ ആ ജോലി സേവനമായി ചെയ്തു തീര്‍ക്കുവാനാവില്ല.

എന്റെ അറിവില്‍ മഹാഭാരതം ഇതുവരെ മലയാളത്തില്‍ ആരും തന്നെ ഡിജിറ്റൈസ് ചെയ്തിട്ടില്ല. “മലയാള ഭാഷാ ഇന്‍സ്റ്റിട്ട്യൂട്ട്” ഇത്തരം കാര്യങ്ങളില്‍ എന്തെങ്കിലും ചെയ്യേണ്ടതാണ് എന്ന് എനിക്കു തോന്നുന്നു.

സി. വി. കുഞ്ഞുരാമന്‍ രചിച്ച “വ്യാസഭാരതം” ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഓപ്പണ്‍ ഡൊമെയ്നിലാണെന്നു തോന്നുന്നു. ഗ്രന്ഥകര്‍ത്താവ് മരണമടഞ്ഞ് 60 വര്‍ഷം കഴിഞ്ഞാല്‍ കൃതികള്‍ ഓപ്പണ്‍ ഡൊമെയ്നിലാകും. പിന്നീട് ആര്‍ക്കുവേണമെങ്കിലും അതിനെ ഡിജിറ്റെസ് ചെയ്യുകയോ, പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കുകയോ ചെയ്യാം. സി. വി. കുഞ്ഞുരാമന്‍ രചിച്ച “വ്യാസഭാരതം” ഞാന്‍ ഇതുവരെ കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല. ആരുടെയെങ്കിലും കൈവശമുണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ അഥവാ അതു വായിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ എഴുതി അറിയിച്ചാല്‍ കൊള്ളാം. അത് ഇപ്പോള്‍ പ്രിന്റിലുണ്ടോ എന്നും അറിയില്ല.

A few years ago, “Vyasamahabharatham” in pdf, upto ‘Dhrona Parvam’ translated by Vidhvan K Prakasam, published by NBS and ‘avatharika’ by Kuttikrishnamarar was available at sreyas.in . Now it is missing. A great loss….. Hope someone will bring it back to the public.

You can write to the admin of sreyas.in. Sometimes, there might be some technical hitch and they can resolve the issue. If the page had been removed due to copyright violation, then the admin of sreyas.in would be helpless to restore the page.

Another option is for the ‘government of Kerala’ to nationalise these books by paying compensation to the copyright holders. We have before us the model of Tamil Nadu government, who nationalised more than 2000 books of reputed authors – http://www.tamilvu.org/library/nationalized/html/index.htm

Thanks for link to Randamoozham. I do not have hard copies of Kunjikkuttan Tampuran’s Maharabharata. Moreover, we cannot scan and post recent editions as they are obviously under copyright. We will have to get copies of older editions of MB that were published before 1950.

Let me first appreciate the efforts taken to publish so many valuable e-books. I have been seaeching for Devi bagavatham Malayalam in different web sites but could not find it any where. It will be great if this can be published with malayalam explanations and slokas.

I also have tried to find a copy of Devi Bhagavatam published before 1930 (so that it will be free from copyright). It is very difficult to get copies of old religious books. I found that a digitized copy of Devi Bhagavatam Malayalam translation by Kandiyur Mahadeva Sastri published in 1927, is available at Kerala Sahitya Akademi. Their site shows the availability of this book in their digital collection. But, its link is disabled. So, we cannot download it from there. I am giving below link to relevant page in the digital library site of Kerala Sahitya Akademi.

If you can contact them in person and manage to get a copy of it, it would great. I am helpless in this matter because I am outside Kerala. Please let me know if you make any progress in this.

I hear that the Malayalam University is converting the typeface to the old style where the joined characters are to be used as phonetic characters. Also the setting of old text to new typestyle is very cumbersome. It is also possible to find more proof readers for the texts if the old style of malayalam font is used. In fact we have been typesetting Malayalam text in old style for our publications for the last 15 years and we still use the same and the work speed is also not so difficult to achieve. In fact use of ISM and Srilipi could be suggested. The use of webfonts is cumbersome and when downloaded they may or may or maynot work. Please let me have your views. Easwaran

It was first published by the author itself around 75 years back. It is recently re-published by Sri Ramkrishna Math.
