Prime Minister Modi writes: We need to dream new dreams

Bharat cannot limit reform to just economic reforms, we must move forward in every aspect of life, writes the prime minister on board the flight from kanniyakumari to delhi.

essay on narendra modi in 100 words in english

My fellow Indians,

essay on narendra modi in 100 words in english

The biggest festival of democracy, the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, are concluding today in our nation, the Mother of Democracy. After a three-day spiritual journey in Kanniyakumari, I have just boarded the plane for Delhi. Throughout the day, Kashi and numerous other seats have been in the midst of voting.

My mind is filled with so many experiences and emotions… I feel a boundless flow of energy within myself. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections are the first in the Amrit Kaal. I began my campaign a few months ago from Meerut, the land of the First War of Independence of 1857. Since then, I have traversed across the length and breadth of our great nation. The final rally of these elections took me to Hoshiarpur in Punjab, the land of the great Gurus and a land associated with Sant Ravidas ji. After that, I came to Kanniyakumari, at the feet of Maa Bharti.

It is natural that the fervour of the elections was echoing in my heart and mind. The multitude of faces seen in rallies and road shows came in front of my eyes. The blessings from our Nari Shakti, the trust, the affection, all of this was a very humbling experience. My eyes were getting moist… I entered into a sadhana (meditative state). And then, the heated political debates, the attacks and counter-attacks, the voices and words of accusations which are so characteristic of an election, they all vanished into a void. A sense of detachment came to grow within me, my mind became completely detached from the external world.

Meditation becomes challenging amidst such huge responsibilities, but the land of Kanniyakumari and the inspiration of Swami Vivekananda made it effortless. As a candidate myself, I left my campaign in the hands of my beloved people of Kashi and came here.

Festive offer

I am also grateful to God for instilling in me these values from birth which I have cherished and tried to live up to. I was also thinking about what Swami Vivekananda must have experienced during his meditation at this very place in Kanniyakumari! A part of my meditation was spent in a similar stream of thoughts.

Amidst this detachment, amidst the peace and silence, my mind was constantly thinking about the bright future of Bharat, the goals of Bharat. The rising sun at Kanniyakumari gave new heights to my thoughts, the vastness of the ocean expanded my ideas, and the expanse of the horizon continuously made me realise the unity, the Oneness, embedded in the depths of the universe. It seemed as if the observations and experiences undertaken in the lap of the Himalayas decades ago were being revived.

Kanniyakumari has always been very close to my heart. The Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Kanniyakumari was built under the leadership of Shri Eknath Ranade ji. I had the opportunity to travel extensively with Eknath ji. During the construction of this memorial, I had the opportunity to spend some time in Kanniyakumari as well.

From Kashmir to Kanniyakumari… This is a common identity that is deeply ingrained in the heart of every citizen of the country. This is the Shakti Peeth (seat of Shakti) where Maa Shakti incarnated as Kanya Kumari. At this southern tip, Maa Shakti performed penance and waited for Bhagwan Shiva, who was residing in the Himalayas at the northernmost parts of Bharat.

Kanniyakumari is the land of confluences. The sacred rivers of our country flow into different seas, and here, those very seas converge. And here, we witness another great confluence — the ideological confluence of Bharat! Here, we find the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, a grand statue of Saint Thiruvalluvar, Gandhi Mandapam, and Kamarajar Mani Mandapam. These streams of thought from these stalwarts converge here to form a confluence of national thought. This gives rise to great inspirations for nation-building. This land of Kanniyakumari gives an indelible message of unity, especially to any person who doubts Bharat’s nationhood and the sense of unity.

The grand statue of Saint Thiruvalluvar in Kanniyakumari seems to be looking at the expanse of Maa Bharati from the sea. His work Thirukkural is one of the crown jewels of the beautiful Tamil language. It covers every aspect of life, inspiring us to give our best for ourselves and for the nation. It was my great fortune to pay my respects to such a great figure.

Swami Vivekananda once said, “Every nation has a message to deliver, a mission to fulfil, a destiny to reach.”

For thousands of years, Bharat has been moving forward with this sense of meaningful purpose. Bharat has been a cradle of ideas for thousands of years. We have never considered what we have acquired as our personal wealth or measured it purely by economic or material parameters. Therefore, Idam-na-mama (this is not mine) has become an inherent and natural part of the character of Bharat.

Bharat’s welfare benefits our planet’s journey to progress as well. Take the freedom movement as an example. Bharat gained independence on August 15, 1947. At that time, many countries around the world were under colonial rule. Bharat’s independence journey inspired and empowered many of those countries to achieve their own freedom. That same spirit was seen decades later when the world came face to face with the once in a century Covid-19 pandemic. When concerns were raised about the poor and developing countries, Bharat’s successful efforts provided courage and assistance to many nations.

Today, Bharat’s governance model has become an example for many countries around the world. Empowering 25 crore people to rise above poverty in just 10 years is unprecedented. Innovative practices such as pro-people good governance, aspirational districts, and aspirational blocks are being discussed globally today. Our efforts, from empowering the poor to last-mile delivery, have inspired the world by prioritising individuals standing at the last rung of society. Bharat’s Digital India campaign is now an example for the entire world, showing how we can use technology to empower the poor, bring transparency, and ensure their rights. Inexpensive data in Bharat is becoming a means of social equality by ensuring the reach of information and services to the poor. The whole world is witnessing and studying the democratisation of technology, and major global institutions are advising many countries to adopt elements from our model.

Today, Bharat’s progress and rise are not just a significant opportunity for Bharat alone, but also a historic opportunity for all our partner countries around the world. Since the success of the G-20, the world has been increasingly envisioning a bigger role for Bharat. Today, Bharat is being acknowledged as a strong and important voice of the Global South. The African Union has become a part of the G-20 group at the initiative of Bharat. This is going to be a crucial turning point for the future of African countries.

The development trajectory of Bharat fills us with pride and glory, but at the same time, it also reminds the 140 crore citizens of their responsibilities. Now, without wasting a single moment, we must step forward towards greater duties and larger goals. We need to dream new dreams, convert them into reality and begin living those dreams.

We must see Bharat’s development in a global context, and for this, it is essential that we understand Bharat’s internal capabilities. We must acknowledge Bharat’s strengths, nurture them, and utilise them for the benefit of the world. In today’s global scenario, Bharat’s strength as a youthful nation is an opportunity from which we must not look back.

The world of the 21st century is looking towards Bharat with many hopes. And we will need to make several changes to move forward in the global scenario. We also need to change our traditional thinking regarding reform. Bharat cannot limit reform to just economic reforms. We must move forward in every aspect of life towards the direction of reform. Our reforms should also align with the aspirations of a Viksit Bharat (developed India) by 2047.

We must also understand that reform can never be a unidimensional process for any country. Therefore, I have laid out the vision of reform, perform, and transform for the country. The responsibility of reform lies with leadership. Based on that, our bureaucracy performs, and when the people join in with the spirit of Jan Bhagidari, we witness a transformation taking place.

We must make excellence the fundamental principle to make our country a Viksit Bharat. We need to work quickly in all four directions: Speed, Scale, Scope, and Standards. Alongside manufacturing, we must also focus on quality and adhere to the mantra of “zero defect-zero effect”.

We should take pride in every moment that God has blessed us with birth in the land of Bharat. God has chosen us to serve Bharat and fulfil our role in our country’s journey towards excellence.

We must redefine our heritage in a modern way while embracing ancient values in a modern context.

As a nation, we also need to reassess outdated thinking and beliefs. We need to free our society from the pressure of professional pessimists. We must remember that freedom from negativity is the first step towards achieving success. Success blossoms in the lap of positivity.

My faith, devotion, and belief in the infinite and eternal power of Bharat are growing day by day. Over the past 10 years, I have seen this capability of Bharat grow even more and have experienced it firsthand.

Just as we utilised the fourth and fifth decades of the 20th century to impart a new momentum to the freedom movement, we must lay the foundation for a Viksit Bharat in these 25 years of the 21st century. The freedom struggle was a time that called for great sacrifices. The present times call for great and sustained contributions from everyone.

Swami Vivekananda had said in 1897 that we must dedicate the next 50 years solely for the nation. Exactly 50 years after this call, Bharat gained independence in 1947.

Today, we have the same golden opportunity. Let’s dedicate the next 25 years solely for the nation. Our efforts will create a strong foundation for the coming generations and the coming centuries, taking Bharat to new heights. Looking at the energy and enthusiasm of the country, I can say that the goal is not far away now. Let us take swift steps… let us come together and create a Viksit Bharat.

Is Modi Worried? India’s Long-Deflated Opposition Finds Some Momentum.

After setting a very high bar for his party in the election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi often appears on the defensive as the voting nears its end.

  • Share full article

A politician raises his right hand as he stands behind a lectern at a political rally. He is surrounded by many people, and he is wearing a scarf with the colors of the Indian flag.

By Mujib Mashal and Pragati K.B.

Reporting from Mumbai and New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi entered India’s general election projecting supreme confidence. “Ab ki baar, 400 paar” went his party’s slogan, meaning this time his side was gunning to surpass 400 seats in the lower house of Parliament, a staggering majority.

But as the seven-week voting period enters its final stretch, with results expected on June 4, India is witnessing something unusual from its powerful leader. It is seeing him sweat.

As Mr. Modi crisscrosses the country for rallies in 100-degree heat, he has often appeared on the defensive, and sometimes rattled. He has frequently set aside his party’s main campaign message — that India is rising under his leadership — to counter his opponents’ portrayal of him as favoring business and caste elites. He has resorted to stoking anti-Muslim sentiments to fend off attempts to split his Hindu support base, only to deny his own words later.

Mr. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, or B.J.P., is still a heavy favorite. But it is finding that the political opposition, counted out after big losses to Mr. Modi in the previous two national elections, has some fight left in it.

The opposition has found traction in challenging Mr. Modi’s control over the national narrative. With the broadcast media cowed by him, opposition leaders have turned to online platforms to find an audience for a pitch focused on economic and social justice, painting the prime minister as a primary culprit in India’s growing inequality .

Before the election, often-bickering opposition parties united in a grand alliance to confront a shared threat: what they call Mr. Modi’s mission to cripple them and remake the country into one-party rule . The alliance lost precious time in the months before the vote, bogged down by internal differences . But it has largely held together despite Mr. Modi’s efforts to lure away some of its members and sideline others with legal actions.

The alliance hopes that this translates into an improved electoral showing, after scattered votes for opposition parties in the 2019 election worked to Mr. Modi’s advantage. To have any hope of cutting significantly into the governing party’s existing strong majority in Parliament, the opposition will have to flip a large number of seats in the more populous north, where the B.J.P. is well entrenched, and hold its ground in the more prosperous south.

“The opposition realized it was now or never,” said Arati Jerath, a political analyst in New Delhi. “It had to fight Modi with all the weapons it could muster or face certain death.”

Analysts say elections that focus on local issues favor the opposition. This spring, Mr. Modi has again made a parliamentary election, contested across more than 540 seats, into a presidential-style national referendum on his own huge popularity and his achievements.

But it has become clear that, a decade into his rule, his ability to steer elections away from local concerns — and cover for his party’s parochial struggles and infighting — is waning. The opposition has tried to take advantage with an energized ground game.

In the lead-up to the vote, Mr. Modi intensified a political crackdown. Chief ministers of two opposition-controlled states were thrown in jail, and the bank accounts of the Indian National Congress, the main opposition party, were essentially frozen. “But people started campaigning door to door, village to village, state to state. So that has become really a groundwork for the opposition,” Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress party, said in an interview.

“Now they are frustrated,” he added, referring to the B.J.P.

The Congress party is trying to pull itself out of an immense hole. The rise of caste-based regional parties marginalized the once-dominant Congress in India’s electorally crucial north, and Mr. Modi’s ascendence set it back further. Mr. Modi, who had spent a lifetime working his way up from a humble background, easily cast the face of the Congress, Rahul Gandhi , as a detached, lightweight beneficiary of dynastic politics.

Just how far the Congress is trying to distance itself from that impression is evident in its election manifesto — both in form and substance.

The party’s 2019 manifesto had a fresh-faced Mr. Gandhi front and center, with a message of jobs and economic development. In the 2024 document, he wears a graying beard, a nod to the time he spent connecting with rural India during two cross-country journeys since 2022, one of them covering 2,000 miles by foot.

If that was not enough, next to him is the 81-year-old Mr. Kharge, elected in 2022 as the Congress president. His half a century in politics , and his background as a Dalit at the bottom of India’s rigid caste hierarchy, helps offset Mr. Modi’s personal story.

The Congress’s campaign promises — from cash transfers to poor women to a “guarantee of first jobs” for young people through one-year paid apprenticeships — shows that it has learned from its successes in India’s southern states, said Sugata Srinivasaraju, the author of a book on Mr. Gandhi’s struggles in leading his party.

“This is good,” Mr. Srinivasaraju said. “But the Congress does not have any emotional or cultural argument to counter” the B.J.P., with its Hindu-nationalist ideology.

The closest the Congress has come is its effort to fuse two issues: longstanding caste inequality and rising unemployment.

India’s Constitution sets aside about half of government jobs and seats in higher education for the middle and lower ranks in the caste system. With the economy struggling to create enough private-sector jobs, these government positions are seen as crucial for any hope of economic mobility.

The Congress’s call for a census of Indians by caste — there has been no official national data on the size of each caste for decades — appears to be striking a chord. The party says such an exercise would ensure that marginalized Indians get their rightful share of slots.

That push is also furthering two charges aimed at Mr. Modi: that he has overseen an economy that benefits only billionaires, and that his party has an upper-caste bias. While it is true that the B.J.P. was once an upper-caste, urban party, Mr. Modi has broadened its base by bringing in lower castes. But his response to the charge suggests he is nervous that the label may stick.

“He’s for the rich,” Mr. Kharge said at a large rally in Mumbai. “He has done nothing for the poor.”

Behind Mr. Kharge were the leaders of several parties in the alliance, each of whom would draw on a grievance to depict Mr. Modi as dangerous for India.

One of them, Arvind Kejriwal, made a particularly personal case that Mr. Modi is trying to turn the country into something like Russia under President Vladimir V. Putin — “one nation, one leader.”

“I am coming straight from jail,” Mr. Kejriwal began his speech.

His Aam Aadmi Party holds power in the Delhi region and in the northern state of Punjab. Its expansion is a threat to Mr. Modi, whose government arrested Mr. Kejriwal over corruption allegations just before the election, creating the absurd reality in which India’s capital was being run from a jail cell.

Mr. Kejriwal managed to get a three-week bail during the campaigning. As he jumps from rally to rally across the country, his connection with crowds makes clear why Mr. Modi would have liked to keep him behind bars.

In Mumbai, he painted India under Mr. Modi as a dystopia where anyone who gets in the prime minister’s way will be locked up. Mr. Kejriwal said he had been kept under the surveillance of multiple cameras in jail — “watching what time I wake up, what time I go to the bathroom, how long I sit on the toilet.”

Then he made his final appeal. This election, he said, is a vote for either keeping him in jail or restoring his freedom. He will be watching the results on June 4 from his cell.

“You can write me letters,” he said. “Cell No. 25, Jail No. 2, Tihar Jail.”

Fact Check: Old, morphed visuals shared as protests against PM Modi’s recent visit to Kanyakumari

Some edited visuals were shared to claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Kanyakumari for meditation was faced with protests by the people of Tamil Nadu.

Fact Check, PM Modi

The Verdict [ Misleading ]

Two of the visuals are being shared on social media which are unrelated to PM Modi’s recent visit to Kanyakumari. The first image has been morphed while the second one is from 2023.

What is the claim?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, to meditate for nearly 48 hours after the conclusion of the campaigning for the last phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2024. Amid his visit which began on May 30, a set of three visuals in which slogan “Go Back Modi” is visible prominently in each, went viral on social media, claiming that the people of Tamil Nadu are reacting to the Prime Minister’s visit  to the state.

PM Modi’s visits to Tamil Nadu have seen some protests in the past few years with the protestors using the slogan “Go Back Modi”.

In the collages, the initial image features a railway station signboard displaying "Kanyakumari" in both English and Tamil, with the striking addition of "Go Back Modi" nestled between the words. Following this, a video captures a man liberating black balloons emblazoned with the identical anti-Modi message. Speaking in Tamil, he announces, "Thousands of these balloons are poised to take flight tomorrow." Lastly, a video montage emerges, amalgamating various photographs of posters echoing the sentiment "Go Back Modi."These visuals are viral social media with the caption, "That's how the people of #TamilNadu are responding to the 2 days visit of PM Modi to Kanyakumari, who is suppose to meditate at #RockMemorial, a monument built in tribute to #SwamiVivekananda, in #Kanyakumari (sic)." Another user also shared the photo of the railway station signboard with the hashtag "Go Back Modi". Archived versions of these posts can be seen here , here and here .

India Tv - Viral post

What are the facts?

During the fact check, it was found that the first image is old and morphed and the second video was from 2023. However, the third video does show recent developments in Tamil Nadu.

The railway station signboard

Through the reverse image search, the original image was traced back to a photo essay on the photography news site PetaPixel . The website had published the image on March 9, 2016. The focal point of the piece centered on India's "longest train," the Dibrugarh-Kanyakumari Vivek Express, noted for its extensive journey spanning 4,273 kilometers from Assam's northeastern edge to the southernmost point of mainland India, Kanyakumari. A photo essay accompanied the article, spotlighting an original image captioned "End of the line." This picture showcased a signboard featuring Kanyakumari's name in Tamil, Hindi, and English. However, upon closer inspection, a comparison with a viral image reveals editing; the Hindi line originally stating Kanyakumari now bears the phrase "Go Back Modi."

Other highlights in the Petapixel photo like the passengers in the background, the bench, and the electrical line matched the visuals in the viral image. The findings established that the latter was manipulated to include the anti-Modi slogan.

Video of man with black balloons

Through reverse image search, it was found that an X user (archived here ) had posted the same video on April 9, 2023, with a caption in Tamil that translated to "Go Back Modi."

Further research led the fact check team to an article published by The News Minute on April 8, 2023, headlined "Modi visit: Police detain Congress leader, seize black balloons in Chennai." The article carried a screenshot of the man from the viral video, confirming that the incident dates back to April 2023. The report said that MP Ranjan Kumar, chairman of Tamil Nadu Congress's Scheduled Castes wing, had stocked up 500 such black balloons in his house and nearly 2,000 with the Congress cadre in Sathyamoorthy Bhavan. He had reportedly planned to release them to oppose Modi's visit to the city.

India Tv - Fact Check

The Hindu also reported on the incident, adding that Kumar was detained by the police and noted that multiple protests were held by Congress in the state against PM Modi.

PM Modi visited Chennai in Tamil Nadu on April 8, 2023, to flag off the Vande Bharat Express train between Chennai and Coimbatore, to inaugurate a new terminal building at the Chennai Airport, and to inaugurate several other infrastructure works.

Video of anti-Modi banners put up in different places

While searching for recent reports about "Go Back Modi" posters in Tamil Nadu, we found several news stories published on May 30 carrying the same images of the same poster used in the video montage.

ETV Bharat reported that such "Go Back Modi" posters have created a stir, writing that a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) lawyer, Hemanth Annadurai, condemned Modi's visit to Tamil Nadu by making these posters and pasting them all over the main areas of Chennai like Tiruvallikeni, Pookadai and Parimuna.

Seithipunal , a Tamil-language news media, also reported that the posters had been created by a lawyer from DMK and pasted at places "like Chennai High Court Complex, Central Railway Station, GH, Anna Road, Gemini Overpass, MLA Hostel, Chennai Press Club, Anna Institute, Anbakam Road."

The posters also carry a photo of Hemanth Annadurai. He himself had shared several images of the posters as seen in a post on his X account on May 30 (archived here ).

India Tv - Old post

The verdict

Old and morphed visuals are being shared to claim that PM Modi’s recent visit to Kanyakumari triggered protests. Therefore, the posts are termed misleading in the fact check.
