Who Is Ariana Grande?

Ariana Grande began performing onstage when she was a child. Her involvement in a Broadway play at age 15, followed by some small TV parts, helped her land the role of Cat on TV's Victorious . She followed that with the spinoff Sam & Cat and then dove headfirst into a chart-topping musical career, releasing five albums: Yours Truly (2013), My Everything (2014) , Dangerous Woman (2016), Sweetener (2018) and Thank U, Next (2019).

Early Years

Grande was born on June 26, 1993, in Boca Raton, Florida, to Edward Butera, a graphic designer, and Joan Grande, a businesswoman. She took to singing and acting at a young age and made her way onto the local theater scene before she was a teenager. Her first big break came in 2008 when the 15-year-old landed the role of Charlotte in the Broadway production of 13 , a play focusing on life growing up in New York City. The early role led to accolades, and Grande won a National Youth Theatre Association Award.

Two years later, she appeared in the musical Cuba Libre and had a small role on a TV show called The Battery’s Down .

Television Roles

Grande landed her breakout role in the Nickelodeon series Victorious . Victorious was set at a performing arts high school, and Grande was cast as a goofy aspiring singer-actress named Cat Valentine. While busy with the show, Grande nevertheless pursued a musical career, making her first appearance on a record with the Victorious soundtrack. And in 2011, Grande released the single "Put Your Hearts Up," a pop song aimed at the hearts of her young Victorious audience. The show's devoted fan base voted Victorious Favorite TV Show at the 2012 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.

When Victorious went off the air in 2012, Grande's character Cat Valentine survived. She went to star in the Nick spin-off Sam & Cat , co-starring iCarly’s Jennette McCurdy. Sam & Cat wasn’t on long when rumors began to swirl that Grande wasn’t particularly enjoying the experience, and the show came to an abrupt end after 35 episodes (2013-14).

Albums and Songs

'yours truly' & 'my everything', "bang bang," "one last time".

During the summer of 2014, Grande teamed up with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj on the single “Bang Bang,” a track that debuted at No. 6 and peaked at No. 3 in the United States. The album spawned another hit single “One Last Time,” which reached number 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Grande had three hit singles from My Everything on the Billboard chart at the same time.

'Dangerous Woman'

In 2015 Grande released Christmas & Chill , a holiday album, and the single "Focus," which debuted at number seven on the Billboard's Hot 100. In February 2016, she released her third album Dangerous Woman , and the title track debuted at number 10 on the Hot 100 that March. She made music history with the track's success, becoming the first artist to have the lead singles from her first three albums debut in the Top 10. Dangerous Woman , which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, also features collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne , Macy Gray and Future.

'Sweetener'

Grande returned to the charts in April 2018 with "No Tears Left to Cry," the catchy, upbeat response to the previous year's Manchester concert bombing. She followed in June with the dance track "The Light Is Coming," featuring Minaj; dropped the sultry "God Is a Woman" in mid-July; and delivered "Breathin" in September. The four releases were included in her highly anticipated album Sweetener, which debuted in mid-August, as was a track about her whirlwind romance with Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson . The overall success of Sweetener led to her first Grammy win, for Best Pop Vocal Album, in February 2019.

'Thank U, Next'

Grande quickly returned to the studio to produce her fifth album, Thank U, Next . The title track hit airwaves in early November 2018, and another chart-topper, "7 Rings," arrived in January 2019. The album debuted in February to strong praise, alongside a new single, "Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored."

In April 2019 the 25-year-old songstress demonstrated her drawing power by becoming the youngest performer ever to headline Coachella, as well as just the fourth woman to earn the honor. Her collaborations from around this time include "Rule the World," with 2 Chainz, "Monopoly," with Victoria Monét, and "Boyfriend," with Social House. Later that year Grande joined Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey for the single "Don't Call Me Angel," from the Charlie's Angels soundtrack.

Grande continued with the collaborations into 2020, her joint effort with Justin Bieber on "Stuck With U" hitting the Billboard top spot in May before she joined Lady Gaga for "Rain on Me" later in the month.

'Positions'

Her third album in just two years, Grande released positions in October 2020 to generally positive reviews.

Bombing at Dangerous Woman Tour

In 2017 Grande performed the title track for the soundtrack of the live action movie Beauty and the Beast . In February of that year, she began her Dangerous Woman tour across North America and then Europe. On May 22, 2017, tragedy struck after Grande finished a concert in Manchester, England and a suicide bomber detonated a bomb at the exit of the concert hall, killing 22 people and wounding 116, including many young adults and children. "All acts of terrorism are cowardly... but this attack stands out for its appalling sickening cowardice, deliberately targeting innocent, defenseless children and young people who should have been enjoying one of the most memorable nights of their lives," British Prime Minister Theresa May said after the attack.

The pop star responded to the horrific act on Twitter.

Less than a day after the attack, Grande suspended her Dangerous Woman tour. She returned to Manchester 13 days after the attack to perform a benefit concert on June 4 for the bombing victims, enlisting friends and fellow superstars to perform including Bieber, Cyrus, Katy Perry , Liam Gallagher, Chris Martin , and Pharrell Williams . Before the concert, Grande visited fans who had been injured in the attack, and she also offered 14,000 free tickets to people who had been at the May 22 concert.

Grande resumed her tour on June 7th in Paris, posting in Instagram : "First show back tonight. Thinking of our angels every step of the way. I love you with all my heart. Grateful for and incredibly proud of my band, dancers and entire crew. I love you. I love you."

The following year, the singer revealed that she was still feeling the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder from the event. "It's hard to talk about because so many people have suffered such severe, tremendous loss," she told British Vogue . "I don't think I'll ever know how to talk about it and not cry."

Among her many accolades, Grande has won six iHeartRadio Music Awards, five MTV Video Music Awards and three American Music Awards. She has also earned 12 Grammy nominations and one win.

The pop diva returned to television with a guest appearance on Scream Queens in 2015, and she hit the big screen in a cameo appearance in Zoolander 2 in 2016. She also starred as Penny Pingleton, Tracy Turnblad's best friend, in NBC's Hairspray Live! in December 2016.

Grande has also become a popular host of Saturday Night Live , bringing her musical and acting talents to the show, including uncanny impersonations of fellow pop divas Britney Spears , Shakira , Rihanna , Celine Dion and Whitney Houston in a skit spoofing the streaming service Tidal.

In February 2020 Grande made a guest appearance on season 2 of Jim Carrey 's Showtime series Kidding .

Fragrances, Charities and Social Media

In addition to her musical and acting projects, Grande has launched two fragrances "Ari by Ariana Grande" and "Frankie by Ariana Grande" with her brother Frankie Grande.

When she is not performing, the pop superstar supports various charitable causes including Kids Who Care, a group she co-founded that raises money for charities in the South Florida region. She also has cultivated a massive social media presence on Facebook , Twitter , Instagram and Snapchat, and landed on Time magazine's list of "The 100 Most Influential People" in 2016.

Personal Life

Grande went public with her romance with her "The Way" collaborator Mac Miller in August 2016. The pair split in May 2018 after almost two years of dating. "I respect and adore him endlessly and am grateful to have him in my life in any form, at all times regardless of how our relationship changes or what the universe holds for each of us!" Grande posted on Instagram.

On June 11, 2018, People magazine confirmed that the singer was engaged to SNL 's Davidson, her boyfriend of several weeks. Subsequent attention focused on their affectionate social media posts directed at one another, though the couple found themselves in an awkward position when footage surfaced of Davidson making a joke about the Manchester concert bombing months earlier.

Grande was devastated by Miller's death from an accidental drug overdose in September 2018, a development that seemingly impacted her relationship with Davidson. By October 2018, the singer and comedian had split.

Grande went on to date Social House's Mikey Foster, before sparking a relationship with real estate agent Dalton Gomez. The pair got engaged in December 2020 and wed in May 2021.

‘Her image came into focus as standing for courage, integrity, resilience, hope’ ... Ariana Grande.

Ariana Grande: a beacon of resilience in her worst and biggest year

The singer has shown courage in the face of trauma, tragedy and tabloid sniping to become the voice of a mass movement towards broad-mindedness and staunch optimism

‘r emember when i was like hey i have no tears left to cry and the universe was like HAAAAAAAAA bitch u thought,” Ariana Grande confided in her 59.4 million Twitter followers last month . It was the kind of darkly funny self-deprecation her fans have come to know and love – more like a text you’d send to your best friend than to a group as big as the population of Italy.

This has been the worst year of her life, as a visibly emotional Grande herself said when she accepted the woman of the year award at the Billboard Women in Music awards recently. Released in April, her single No Tears Left to Cry marked her return to music after the terror attack at her Manchester concert in May 2017. Earlier this year, she ended her two-year relationship with the rapper Mac Miller after his substance abuse became, in her words, “toxic” ( he died of an accidental overdose in September). The following month, after a highly public whirlwind romance, Grande called off a short-lived engagement to the Saturday Night Live comedian Pete Davidson .

But it has also been her biggest year professionally. Her fourth album, Sweetener , was widely acclaimed and will be up for best pop vocal album at the 2019 Grammy awards. A new, non-album single, Thank U, Next, has broken streaming records; an album of the same name is promised imminently. In March, she will embark on a world tour, promising a special show for Manchester.

In the throes of personal upheaval and heartbreak – not to mention the workaday grind – Grande has not only found resilience but sought to spread it. Her One Love Manchester concert raised £17m for victims and their families. Three months later, while still experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety , she performed at the Concert for Charlottesville benefit for victims of an attack at a far-right rally in Virginia. This March, she met survivors of the Parkland, Florida school shooting at the March for Our Lives in Washington DC.

‘We put a lot on her shoulders’ ... Grande wipes away a tear as she performs at One Love Manchester, Old Trafford cricket ground, 4 June 2017.

Grande has aligned herself with Black Lives Matter, against Trump, and for gun reform and gender equality. She articulated her post-Manchester philosophy to Elle magazine as trying “to spread the fucking light”. She went on: “Not everyone is going to agree … but that doesn’t mean I’m just going to shut up and sing my songs. I’m also going to be a human being who cares about other human beings; to be an ally and use my privilege to help educate people.”

Musically, too, she has turned towards the light. Sweetener is a steadfast expression of optimism, its title track a reference to seeking out and savouring the good. On Thank U, Next, she expresses gratitude for the lessons of her past relationships – including that with Davidson, only three weeks after their split. One fan tweeted: “Who is Ariana’s therapist and are they accepting new clients?”

Grande in 2013.

Almost every review and interview has marvelled at her fortitude – she is the inverse of the archetypal child star who grows up without coping mechanisms. A former Broadway and Nickelodeon performer, Grande has been in showbusiness for close to half her life. But the events of the last 18 months make it easy to forget that her public image was once not so at odds with that of the young star warped by early fame.

In 2014, the media gossip site Gawker proclaimed , 21-year-old Grande “went from ‘that girl from Nickelodeon’ to one of the biggest divas on the planet. Allegedly.” It detailed (largely unsubstantiated) rumours that she had shoved a TV presenter to get her good side on camera, employed a personal water attendant, made fans at a meet-and-greet cry and wished that another crowd of fans would “all fucking die”. Jezebel embraced with gusto the tabloid rumour that Grande demanded to be “literally carried like a baby” by her staff, eventually claiming to substantiate it with “OVERWHELMING photographic evidence”.

Whether Grande’s reputation at this time was deserved is unclear (she did edit the caption of a photograph showing her being carried to clarify that her “toes were LITERALLY BLEEDING”). But “diva” was an appropriate label in one sense: Grande’s 2013 debut album, Yours Truly, laboured to communicate her mastery of a virtuoso vocal range that has been compared to Mariah Carey , often at the expense of the songs and, infamously, the enunciation. With her public image little more developed than that of a little girl with a big voice, it was easily distorted by what became known as “donutgate”.

In July 2015, TMZ published security footage of Grande, then 22, larking about in a California doughnut shop with her new boyfriend. She licked a doughnut she hadn’t paid for and remarked: “I hate Americans. I hate America.” The shop’s health rating was lowered and the owner said he thought Grande should be charged ; a former Miss Kansas said she was “disgusted that someone can lack so much decency”.

Looking back, the outrage reflects either a more innocent time or an early indicator of today’s “alternative facts” bubble. Grande apologised for her word choice, saying she was expressing frustration at high child obesity rates in the US – a PR move that raised eyebrows but not her reputation . The 2016 DNC email hack revealed that “donutgate” cost her a gig at the Obama White House .

Yet, for all her notoriety among gossip bloggers and rightwing pundits, Grande was not quite a household name when her Manchester concert was attacked. By then she had pivoted to cheeky, forthright pop on her well-received third album, Dangerous Woman , landing her somewhere between demure Taylor Swift and the more daring Demi Lovato in the layperson’s pop-star nexus.

The suicide bomber struck in the foyer at 10.30pm on 22 May 2017, just after the encore. Twenty-three people, including the attacker, were killed and at least 139 wounded. Grande’s mother, Joan, was in the audience, desperately searching for her child. “Everyone was leaving, and I was going towards the stage,” she told Elle. “Those minutes when you don’t know what’s happening – there are no words.” Grande’s statement to her fans that night momentarily became the most-liked tweet in history: “broken. from the bottom of my heart, i am so so sorry. i don’t have words.”

Floral tributes to the victims of the attack at Grande’s Manchester Arena concert.

As the New York Times critic Jon Pareles wrote in his review of Sweetener : “No pop career should ever have a terrorist attack as a milestone.” But it is undeniable that Grande’s response to the Manchester bombing changed her public image. She struck a stateswomanly figure at the star-studded One Love event, defiantly performing her raunchiest hits at the request of one victim’s mother after the Daily Mail suggested that the bomber targeted the concert because of her sexualised aesthetic. She closed with a stripped-back rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow that was no less moving for its technical prowess. Her image – until recently subject to definition by other people – came into focus as standing for courage, integrity, resilience, hope.

Even Piers Morgan, never one to let go of a stick with which to beat women, admitted to having “misjudged her” . She was weeks shy of her 24th birthday. “We put a lot on her shoulders,” said her manager, Scooter Braun . “And she took over. You know, for the rest of her life, she can say that she is exactly who she claims to be.” The following month she was made the first honorary Mancunian, the city council moving unanimously to recognise the contribution of this “young American woman for whom it would have been understandable if she never wanted to see this place again”.

Speculation that her new music might be maudlin by the weight of what it had to acknowledge proved misplaced. Lingering on “the absolute worst of humanity” would give it power, she told Time : “The last thing I would ever want is for my fans to see something like that happen and think it won.” With Sweetener, Grande embraced joy without pretending it was easy. Working with Pharrell and producer Max Martin, she landed on a looser, more idiosyncratic sound, placing emotional acuity above vocal technique. “Here is my bleeding heart, and here is a trap beat behind it,” is how she characterised it .

Critic Lindsay Zoladz named Sweetener the year’s pop album to beat : “A defiant record, chronicling both the difficulty and necessity of choosing to be happy.” Grande has credited this defiance to more than a decade in therapy, first dating to her parents’ divorce and ramped up post-Manchester. The tweet shouting out her therapist was “funny as fuck”, she replied , “but in all honesty, therapy has saved my life so many times. if you’re afraid to ask for help, don’t be.”

Part of that work, Grande has said, has been advocating for good despite the risk of backlash – and, tellingly, doing so not just as a fundraising figurehead, but in small interactions that reflect a commitment to acting with integrity. When a fan linked Miller’s drink-driving charge to Grande’s having “dumped him for another dude” as “just the most heartbreaking thing happening in Hollywood”, Grande addressed the fan in a searing but respectful shutdown : “shaming/blaming women for a man’s inability to keep his shit together is a very major problem. let’s please stop doing that.”

Whirlwind romance ... Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande in August 2018.

She was similarly scathing of Morgan’s criticism of Little Mix’s nude album shoot last month: “i look forward to the day you realize there are other ways to go about making yourself relevant than to criticize young, beautiful, successful women for everything they do”. Such “clapbacks” are a well-established currency of the celebrity ecosystem, but at a time when the highest-profile celebrities – Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Adele – are defined by their silence, Grande explains herself, and even apologises.

When, in July, her fans questioned a tasteless joke by Davidson (he said, to demonstrate Grande’s celebrity: “Britney Spears didn’t have a terrorist attack at her concert”), Grande engaged. “This has been v tough and conflicting on my heart,” she tweeted (and, more recently, deleted). “ … I, of course, didn’t find it funny.” This month, chided by Kanye West for seeming to dismiss his mental illness to promote her new song Imagine she apologised for the “probably insensitive” remark without conceding much: “With all due respect, i don’t need to use anyone to promote anything. period.”

Gossip blogger Elaine Lui, once one of Grande’s least sympathetic commentators , wrote approvingly of the woman emerging from “the girl who got caught on camera licking donuts”. Lui wrote: “She is showing how you can move on from it and organically change the way you are perceived without it feeling like she’s putting on and discarding personalities for convenience.” Thank U, Next felt like the culmination of that work. When it appeared a few weeks after the end of her engagement, it was reasonable to expect a scorched-earth diss about moving on to better things. Instead it was a beatific thank you from Grande to her exes. “Rather than zap the pain from memory, Grande assesses the damage and rebuilds from the ground up,” wrote Vulture, naming it the best song of 2018 . At the time of writing it has spent five weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100, the first single by a female artist to do so since Sia’s Cheap Thrills in August 2016, and six weeks at No 1 in the UK.

The song’s much-hyped, big-budget “video event” , spoofing teen movies Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, 13 Going on 30 and Bring It On, also broke a number of records, but by perpetuating archetypes rather than subverting them, it threatened to overshadow the lyrics’ quietly revolutionary sentiment. Similarly, another recent YouTube partnership, the Dangerous Woman Tour Diaries, was uncompelling, Grande’s presence unfocused in the meandering, PR-drawn definition of “documentary”. It suggests a risk that the forthrightness that make her so compelling could become more distant as her star rises.

For now, Grande burns bright as a symbol of resilience: a young woman who defied the belittling diva narrative; who says she emerged from tragedy “loving a bit more fearlessly” than she did before; who named a song after her then-very-new fiance because, as she put it , “i been the fuck thru it and life’s too short to be cryptic n shit about something as beautiful as this love” – and who stayed strong when that soured, too. The question of whether celebrities are role models by default seems quaint when the US president reportedly ran for office to boost his own profile above that of Gwen Stefani . But Grande’s resolute, clear-eyed optimism represents a different way to be: that it is possible to choose to be hopeful, even when that seems futile.

Clear-eyed hope … Grande at Billboard’s 2018 Women in Music event.

“Sometimes it’s kind of just about being the light in a situation,” said Grande of the power of pop music . The same could be said of the space she has created for herself in contemporary culture. Whether she caught wind of a society-wide turn towards hope or sparked it herself, it seems to be spreading. Some of this year’s biggest songs – the 1975’s Love It If We Made It; Bastille and Marshmello’s collaboration with its chorus, “I want you to be happier” – were earnest expressions of hope in an uncertain future. Avengers: Infinity War, Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Deadpool 2 had storylines about the rewards of acting with kindness and empathy . Even Pantone said its colour of the year – a vibrant burnt coral, carefully chosen to represent “a feeling that’s out there in the zeitgeist” – symbolises “our innate need for optimism”.

Perhaps Grande realised its importance sooner than everyone else. Accepting Billboard’s woman of the year award, she said she may well be at the peak of her artistry, “but as far as my personal life goes I really have no idea what the fuck I’m doing”. She continued, her voice thickening: “I just want to say that if you’re someone out there who has no idea what this next chapter is going to bring, you’re not alone in that.” Then she pulled herself together and beamed. “Ew. I’m not going to cry.”

Grande was born on June 26, 1993 in Boca Raton, Florida, to parents of Italian heritage. She is the daughter of Joan Grande, a CEO of a marine communications company, and Edward Butera, a graphic designer firm owner (Farber, Jim). However, the marriage of her parents did not last long, as they separated when Grande was about 8 years old (Goodman, Lizzy).

Throughout her childhood, she acted in theater plays and musicals. She began to perform at the Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theater, and her first role as a main character was in the production of Annie (Geggis, Anne). In addition, she performed in musicals like The Wizard of Oz and Beauty and the Beast. At the age of 8, she also sang with South Florida’s Philharmonic, Florida Sunshine Pops, and Symphonic Orchestras. She had her first national television appearance singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” for the Florida Panthers. This all happened while she was studying at North Broward Preparatory School.

At 13 years of age, she already had aspirations to record an R&B album, but her managers were not keen on her making an album yet. Instead, she carried on with her acting and musical theater career by being in the Broadway production 13. She won a National Youth Theatre Association Award for her role in that play. Throughout being in the production, she was studying in school through distance learning, and even sang a few times at the famous jazz club Birdland (“Official Ariana Grande”).

Grande got her breakthrough by being casted for Nickelodeon’s Victorious in 2009, with several of her co-stars from 13. Through the show, she became a teen idol, and followed up this acclaim by acting in the musical Cuba Libre in 2010. However, she felt that music, not acting was her true calling. She started to work on her debut in August of 2010, and got the help of voice coach Eric Vetro ti improve her vocals. Her first ever recording was on the soundtrack for Victorious: Music from the Hit TV Show for a song called “Give It Up.” While working on this track, Grande recorded covers of songs and uploaded them to YouTube. A friend of the CEO of Republic Records saw these videos, and the company was impressed by Grande’s vocals. She was signed by Republic Records in 2011, and they released a single of hers called “Put Your Hearts Up” (Erlewine, Stephen Thomas).

However, Grande later expressed that she was not interested in the bubblegum pop genre, even though her single went certified gold. In between working on her first studio album, she voiced the fairy princess in the animated television series Winx Club, voiced the title role in the English dub of the animated film Snowflake, the White Gorilla, and sang on two more soundtracks for the show Victorious. In addition, Grande collaborated with British singer and songwriter Mika on the single “Popular Song,” starred as Snow White in the theater production A Snow White Christmas, played Amanda Benson in the Nickelodeon film Swindle, and acted in Nickelodeon’s Sam & Cat (EW.com).

With three years in the making, Yours Truly, Grande’s first studio album, was released on August 30, 2013. Grande wrote several of the songs on the album, and had a decent amount of creative direction. In September of 2013, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 album charts, having 138,000 copies sold in its first week. The album eventually sold 500,000 copies in the U.S., and more across the world, making it Grande’s first platinum album. Three singles of hers topped the charts, and she won “New Artist of the Year” from the American Music Awards in 2013, and “Breakthrough Artist of the Year” from the Music Business Association. She finished her highly successful The Listening Sessions tour, and by January of 2014, she was already working on her second album (Billboard).

Ariana Grande started out as a child actress and musical theater singer, and realized herself in singing R&B music, among other genres. She was a child prodigy and had good backing from managers throughout her career, making it easier to land roles in television series, films, and getting a record contract to sing. Now, through her talent and hard work, she has become one of the most influential and beloved singers in the world.

Interview: Ariana Grande on her loves, problem-solving and her new album.

essay my idol ariana grande

There’s nothing else existing in the world of show biz that’s quite as pure as the mutual love shared between Ariana Grande and her fans - who refer to themselves as Arianators, but whom she calls her "loves". The 15.9 million strong-on-Twitter fanbase and their Queen, they love each other; they really do. But don’t just take my word for it, consider these facts: lead-single 'Problem’ is the fastest #1 debut in iTunes history - 37 minutes, FYI! - the 4th highest debut for a female artist ever, and made Ariana the youngest woman to have debuted with more than 400k units sold. If that isn’t love, I don’t know what is… and that’s just the very first song lifted from an entire forthcoming album, which is predicted to be a big game-changer in 2014.

Ariana herself, reciprocates with gracious and engaging heart-to-hearts via her social media - "loves I wanna start giving u #arianatorhomework we'll make lists of old movies for u to watch so we can make campy memes & gifs together lol" - and releases unheard demos and snazzy covers as treats for fans. She says: "My loves, they are very important to me, just because they lift me up when I feel down. They provide me with endless amounts of motivation and inspiration and strength to keep going. Simple things, like they make me laugh. They are also there for me on a very real level, you know, like a family. So a lot of things, small and big."

Within an interview with Big Machine Records CEO Scott Borchetta in the latest issue of 'Rolling Stone' magazine, is talk of "plotting about how to steer Taylor Swift’s still-unannounced new album clear of Ariana Grande’s current pop-chart ascendance". Swift too, nurtures a requited relationship with her fans, but as Borchetta says: "Number one is number one, and there’s only one who can be there." That’s the pop-power of Ariana Grande now, not even in her prime yet, let alone the peak of her career. She’s just getting started with album #2, but because there’s no-one else quite like Ariana, and there’s no-one else quite like the Arianators, together they’ll be a fierce combo for years to come.

And straight from the horse’s mouth, here are Ariana's favourite lyrics from the new album: "‘cause if the water dries up and the moon stops shining, stars fall and the world goes blind boy, you know... I'll be savin' my love for you."

COUP DE MAIN: Thank you so much for taking the time to speak to us in New Zealand today! Last time we spoke, you’d only just released 'Put Your Hearts Up', so it’s been amazing watching you take over the world with your #1 debut album - and now 'Problem' has gone Platinum and is the fastest #1 debut in iTunes history! ARIANA GRANDE: Thank you for making time for me! Oh boy! It is crazy, crazy-crazy. It has been an amazing ride, especially since 'Put Your Hearts Up'. Geez!

CDM: You’re one of the hardest-working people in the music industry, so it’s nice to see that you’ve gotten to finish off your new album at home in Florida so you can spend some quality time with your family. ARIANA: It is very important to me. My Grandpa is sick, so I want to spend as much time with him as I can and help him get better hopefully. It is of upmost importance that I spend as much time as I can in Florida, you know.

CDM: So at first, you were scared to approach 'Problem' because of the opposite song structure with the belt-y verse and whispering chorus - did it become important to you to really push yourself musically on the new album? ARIANA: Of course. I think the most important thing with an artist is to push yourself to try new things and show people that you are growing and just definitely take a risk and try something that you’re scared of.

CDM: Why did you choose Iggy Azalea to guest on 'Problem'? ARIANA: I think she is such a girl power figure and ‘Problem’ is such a girl power song. I thought it would make the perfect combination, so I am really glad that she jumped on board and did it with me.

CDM: Was it fun to work with Big Sean again? ARIANA: Oh my gosh! Of course. We have so much music coming out together, we have done like three more songs that are not announced yet. We just love making music together, he is one of my best friends.

essay my idol ariana grande

CDM: Having worked with Max Martin and Darkchild (Rodney Jerkins) on your new album, did they give you any songwriting advice? Or did you pick up any tips from working with them? ARIANA: For sure. Working with Max, I learnt so much about pop music that I didn’t know before. I didn’t see myself becoming a pop artist - like a straight pop artist - everything I had done before was very heavily R&B influenced. Until I worked with Max, I really didn’t have a full appreciation for pop music - so I have a full appreciation for pop music now that I didn’t before, thanks to him.

CDM: Do you think your EDM song with Zedd will be the biggest surprise to hear on the album? Or do you have more surprises in store? ARIANA: I think the Zedd song is very different for me - you know what I mean? So, I think that people will be shocked to hear it. But… I think there are some surprises in there.

CDM: Now that you’ve done the track-list for the album, is the song you did with Darkchild still your favourite that you’ve ever done? ARIANA: It’s hard when you are doing an album to call one your favourite, but I have two that are tied for my favourite and that is definitely one of them.

essay my idol ariana grande

CDM: You’ve said that you love this new album five more times than your debut - why? ARIANA: I think I’ve said it "five million" [more times]! <laughs> It is just better. I feel like I have grown more as an artist, I like the songs so much more. But I still have a massive love and a place in my heart for the first album, of course. But it’s just that this one is better, that’s all.

CDM: For the next few questions, just say the first thing that pops into your mind… If your new album were a colour, which colour would it be? ARIANA: Periwinkle.

CDM: If the new album were an animal? ARIANA: Tiger.

CDM: If the new album were a movie? ARIANA: 'Labyrinth'.

CDM: Obviously all of your fans are dying to hear your duet with Justin Bieber! But that won’t be on the new record?! ARIANA: I don’t know! We are not sure yet, we are trying to work things out. But they will be getting it, so that is all they need to know. We are working hard to get it to them - that’s all they need to be worried about.

CDM: Will your duet with Chris Brown - 'Don’t Be Gone Too Long' - be on the album? ARIANA: Yes.

essay my idol ariana grande

CDM: You’re such an inspiration to your fans, so I thought you might like to help them out with a few problems some of your fans have written to us about, by offering some advice or wisdom… No matter what your age, anyone’s who connected to the Internet can be affected by cyber-bullying. What’s the best way to deal with cyber-bullies? ARIANA: Get off the Internet! Walk away from the computer, don’t give them a platform to reach you - go do something valuable with your time. Every time you read something that upsets you, just walk away and do something else.

CDM: You’re busy working most of the time, so how do you manage to maintain your relationships with those that you’re closest to? ARIANA: I just make time! You gotta make it a priority. I make time - I will fly places to see people secretly <laughs> or I will fly them out to see me. I will bring my friends with me everywhere I go, and I stay up late every night at home and just hang out with people that I want to hang out with.

CDM: All of your hard work is obviously paying off, career-wise - what’s your advice for working towards life-goals? ARIANA: You have to make sure you want it for the right reasons. Make sure your head is on straight and make sure that you are strong, secure, and are surrounded by people who are going to support you and be there for you and help you when you feel down.

CDM: Is time-management a hard skill to master? ARIANA: Yeah, for sure - definitely. But once you master it, I think that it is a beautiful thing.

CDM: For people who find it hard to communicate their feelings, how do you suggest they overcome this? ARIANA: Writing - write music, or write poetry, or write in your diary.

essay my idol ariana grande

CDM: Your fans are called Arianators. What does being an Arianator mean to you, personally, beyond simply being an Ariana Grande fan? ARIANA: My loves, they are very important to me, just because they lift me up when I feel down. They provide me with endless amounts of motivation and inspiration and strength to keep going. Simple things, like they make me laugh. They are also there for me on a very real level, you know, like a family. So a lot of things, small and big.

CDM: When are you going to come visit your New Zealand Arianators? ARIANA: Very, very soon. I’m trying to work it all out.

CDM: You recently released 'Boyfriend Material' as a surprise for fans, do you have any plans to release another fan-favourite, 'Voodoo Love'? ARIANA: No, I don’t actually. But, maybe one day.

CDM: We’re now going to play a game of 'Would You Rather?' - so I’ll give you two choices and you tell me which one you’d prefer. Would you rather be able to take all of your dogs with you everywhere you go? Or be able to borrow anything you wanted from Sarah Jessica Parker’s wardrobe? ARIANA: Take my dogs.

CDM: Would you rather have to cut off all your hair, or dye it rainbow-coloured? ARIANA: Cut off all my hair.

CDM: Would you rather play the best prank ever on your neighbour Miley Cyrus, or have more time for gardening? ARIANA: Both.

CDM: Would you rather be best friends with Audrey Hepburn, or have a slumber party with Tim Burton? ARIANA: Both.

CDM: Would you rather go to Hogwarts, or live in Middle Earth? ARIANA: Hogwarts.

essay my idol ariana grande

CDM: At the iHeartRadio Awards, Rihanna gave you some cute advice: "‘Lil’ mama keep doing what you’re doing because it’s working." It’s so great to know that female popstars are more of a sisterhood and supportive of each other, than what the media generally leads people to believe. ARIANA: Yeah, I think the media leads people to believe a lot of things that are not true, and I think it makes the business look a lot uglier then it actually is. It is this really beautiful, blessed place to be. Of course there are some negative downsides to it, but I feel like the media really loves to thrive off that and really, really puts a magnifying glass over it and makes all these comparisons and creates all of these dramas and fake situations just to get people to read it - it’s such a negative way to be. Really, everyone I have encountered in this industry has been quite nice. I can really only count on three fingers, people that I have met that have been less than gracious to me. But everybody that I’ve met - and that’s been pretty much everybody - everybody has been so incredibly kind and warm, and welcoming and respectful, and complimentary and civil. I think that that is very shocking, because of what the media does and creates of people, especially women.

CDM: It must get really annoying to be constantly compared to every other female popstar who has a new single out. ARIANA: Well, not just me, everybody!

CDM: Last year in an interview with 'Complex' magazine, you said: "I’m terrified of looking straight into the camera. I see people on the other side of the lens and the whole judgmental world of pop culture waiting with their pitchforks and torches. At the end of the day I don’t care what they have to say, but knowing that every little thing I do is documented is a lot of pressure." Do you still feel that pressure? ARIANA: Nope!

CDM: What has changed since then? ARIANA: I became a lot more okay with the fact that you can’t please everybody. I grew up a little bit and I was like: "This is my job, I’ve gotta love it or leave it." And I do love it, and I love it way too much to abandon it or let other people scare me. While there are people who don’t like what I do, there are a lot of people that do, and for those people I am grateful. And for the people that don’t get what I do or like what I do, that’s okay, I don’t feel the need to try and explain myself to them - it is just not for them. So I got over it, and I was like: 'I am going to spend my time being the best at what I do and not worrying about what people will think of it.' Because if I love it and my team loves it and my fans love it and my friends love it, then I am doing something right.

essay my idol ariana grande

CDM: I love that you’ve been introducing your younger fans to 50s and 60s pop music. Your cover of The Spencer Davis Group’s 'Gimme Some Lovin'' is rad. Is that your favourite era of music? ARIANA GRANDE: I love all music, but I think definitely a lot of my favourites come from the late 50s and 60s, but I love all music, I really do.

CDM: What do you think is the difference between a good song and a great song? ARIANA: A good song is a song that you listen to and you don’t skip over it. A great song is a song that you want to play again on repeat.

CDM: And the new album is going to be full of great songs?! ARIANA: That is the objective. That is what I am shooting for, so I hope so. You will have to tell me when you hear it!

CDM: I can’t wait to hear it! Are you still aiming for an August or September release? ARIANA: Yes, we’re shooting for late-August/early-September, and I think it is going to work out.

CDM: What's left on your bucket-list that you'd really like to achieve? ARIANA: I want to go sky-diving and I want to go scuba-diving.

CDM: You can do both of those things in New Zealand! ARIANA: Oh great! See you there! <laughs>

CDM: And lastly, do you have a message for your New Zealand fans? ARIANA: Thank you for all of your love and support! I can’t wait to make my way out there and say hello to you! I’ll see you soon!

Ariana Grande’s as-yet-untitled new album will be released later this year! In the meantime, grab 'Problem' - featuring Iggy Azalea - from iTunes HERE .

Music Marketing Analysis 1.1

Introduction:

The artist Ariana Grande was born on the 26th of June in 1993 in Boca Raton , Florida . She is an American singer and actress who started her career at a young age . Before she was signed with Universal Republic , Ariana studied at North Broward Preparatory School . Being capable of mixing music styles makes her an unique and unusual artist. Often she mixes soul vocals with contemporary R&B, pop, electropop and hip-hop beats.

Ariana Grande’s music career began in 2011 with the soundtrack music from ‘’Victorious ‘’. In 2013, she released her first studio album Yours Truly , which entered the top US Billboard 200 The album’s lead single, “The Way “, debuted in the top 10 of the Billboard 100 with critics comparing her wide vocal range to Mariah Carey .

Ariana Grande’s first album ‘Yours Truly ‘’ has been released on September the 3rd 2013 by Republic Records . Producers such as Antonio Dixon, Matt Squire , Greg Wells and Leon Thomas were included of making this album .

Yours Truly debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 selling 138,000 copies in its opening week. Internationally, the album reached the top-ten position in Australia , Canada , Denmark , Ireland , Japan , the Netherland and UK.

The cover of this album , Grande describes the album’s first half as a “throwback” to the R&B music of the 1990s, and the second half being “very unique and very special that I’ve sort of written” which is completely original. Also the quality of the design is really good .

Ariana Grande sells her merchandise everywhere and it’s sold all the time . In addition she tours in a lot of countries such as : US , France , UK , Portugal , Italy , Sweden , Ireland , Spain Lisbonandmore.YoursTrulyistheresultofthreeyearsofwork.[4]Theprojectunderwentsignificant conceptual and sonic changes throughout that time. Grande began working on the album in August 2010 while she was filming Victorious and formally started to work on it with a record label after she was signed to Republic Records on August 10, 2011.

The album ‘’Yours Truly ‘’ is currently sold on Amazon where the price is £5.10 . It is also sold on her official site (arianagrande.com) where the price for the album is £5.99 . In addition Ariana’s second album ‘’ My everything” is sold on Amazon for £6.99 and on her official site the price of it , it’s £11 . Due to the fact her albums on her official store are original, the prices are higher than the ones on Amazon.

The release of Ariana Grande’s album ‘’Yours Truly” was been released on the 3rd of September 2013 . A week after her album release The Weeknd released his album ‘’ Kiss Land ‘’ . The price for his album on Amazon was £5.99 , compared to Ariana’s who was £1 less . This may suggest that despite the fact they were both American artists, The Weeknd was listened and preferred more at that time .

In stores such as HMV , the album price ‘’ My everything ‘’ is £5.99 which is the same price like on her official site .

Promotion :

Ariana Grande is promoting herself and her music through her merchandise , albums and her tours . In this way it allows Ariana to show her musical skills and be a role model for young people. Also she has signed a makeup deal with one of the most affordable makeup shops ‘’ Superdrug ‘’ . Through this deal Ariana is going to sell her brand name which will help promote herself and also promote Superdrug .

Another way Ariana promotes her music is by having posters and phone cases of her album “Yours truly ”. She also has posters for all her albums and most popular singles. Clothes and other items with the name of the album, songs and pictures are also sold. In this way she promotes her products. Mainly T-Shirts are and her albums are sold .

Other ways in which Ariana Grande promotes herself is by performing with other well known and listened to artists . For instance, her collaboration with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj on making the song “Bang Bang” managed to sell 3.2 million copies in the US.

Ariana Grande promotes her products on YouTube where you can find all her songs from all her albums. She also, has her own channel/playlist on Spotify, Itunes where you can also find her albums and singles.

Like every other celebrity, Ariana uses social media platforms such as Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to promote herself and her work.

Furthermore, shops are another place where Grande uses promotion. By having merchandise of her products and advertising new singles/albums she gets people’s attention as they are more likely to see it somewhere on the high street.

People at the Universal Studios are in the charge of marketing the album and distributing it . Her stylist was Law Roach was her personal stylist for her tour and also her album . Anyone who’s collabed on her album targeted her young fans also.

Market Strategy 1.2 :

The strength of this album and it’s release would be that Ariana has build a strong fan base which makes it easier for her to market because she has got loyal fans . Another strength for this album would be her artwork on the album as it is very detailed and made by unique artists .

Weaknesses :

Weaknesses are the critic reviews that Ariana gets .

impressions)

At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score out of 100 based on ratings and reviews from mainstream critics, the album

received an average of 81, based on 9 reviews, indicating “universal acclaim”

Opportunities :

Ariana Grande’s makeup collaboration with the company ‘’Superdrug ‘’ is Alliance Marketing. This is because two businesses like Universal Music Group and Superdrug got together to promote big products. Her collaboration with the photographer Jeff Nelson and the international makeup artist Sammy Mourabit helped her release of the music video ‘’ No Tears Left to Cry ‘’ .

Both businesses were beneficial to each other in some ways. For example, Superdrug attracted more customers because of the world wide known singer Ariana Grande and got the opportunity to launch a perfume set product called “Moonlight” with her. This was beneficial to Ariana as she promoted herself and her voice on a really famous affordable makeup band. In addition, the perfume product gave Ariana the amazing opportunity to have .This type of marketing was definitely successful as Ariana got a large amount of sales in all the Superdrug shops around the world .

Ariana Grande has released a movie singing demo for the famous movie ‘’Beauty and the Beast ‘’ in collab with John Legend in 2017 . She talked about it on her social media and also interviews to promote it. This is Word Of Mouth Marketing and PR Marketing. This is because Ariana used the media to talk about her new collaboration . Also, this is a way of releasing information and news people have been waiting to hear about. Doing a small project Disney was described as something “indescribable” in Ariana ‘s words and has been said that the song isn’t a part of an album.

Having done a small part in the movie Beauty and the Beast is a way to attract the people’s eyes and talk about the new release. Furthermore, this is Alliance Marketing as she collaborated with Disney. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axySrE0Kg6k )

This was successful because Ariana says “the moment my fans heard the song , they played it over and over and over again and they’re going crazy”. This shows how the collab with Disney and the famous movie Beauty and the Beast intrigued Ariana’s fans.

Ariana Grande ‘s ‘’The Honeymoon” tour in 2015 is Event Marketing. Her tour was in the UK on 6 different dates. The reason to why Ariana tours is because her fans often want to hear her physically as she is a world wide known celebrity. Also, customers often need a reason to shop products and events are usually a way to promote them as well as give customers reasons to buy them.

Marked by the sort of puerile whimsy that can

only really happen once a career, it split the difference between doe-eyed doo-wop and

remember-the-’90s pop-R&B (the latter intentionally courting the ensuing

Mariah Carey

comparisons).

Ariana Grande proved just the type to pull off this sort of broad-stroked pastiche: she’s a theater kid at

heart, slipping in and out of characters with practiced finesse (she’s got an arsenal of

YouTube, from Britney Spears to a crying lamb). In a way, it was a risk and also these sorts of

throwbacks were, if not totally unfashionable, decidedly out of season.

Furthermore, “An extra London date was added due to popular demand after tickets sold out for the first date” which shows how a tour is a really good way to promote yourself in many ways by traveling around and having people attend your events.

In addition, pairing up with other famous celebrities the way Ariana did to perform at a event like MTV VMA’s 2014, is a great way to impress your audiences and attract more people towards you as you’re heard by more people. For instance, Ariana Grande performed with Jessis J and Nicki Minaj which reached more than 1 Billion views. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HDdjwpPM3Y

Ariana Grande’s Event Marketing was quite successful as tickets for her tour were sold out because of the huge amount of people that wanted to attend. Also, it was successful because of the invitation the three incredible artists received to perform at an important event like the MTV VMA’s. This impressed fans, other performers and helped to promote the product.

Ariana Grande provides her fans with information about her upcoming events, tours and new products on Social media websites such as Twitter. She does this for promotion. This is Social Media Marketing and Cross- Media Marketing. The reason behind this is to have more people see what’s due to happen. Twitter for example, is really used and famous nowadays therefore, Ariana Grande posting her official website, is to purposely get people’s attention and whoever is interested, to find what they are looking for and buy it of her.

Threats of this release would be that she may struggle to produce the same quality album next time due to people’s major expectations .

Ariana Grande has changed the artwork for her debut album days after unveiling the original cover.

The singer was faced with fan criticism for her original image for her upcoming album Yours Truly , which saw her kneeling on a bed of roses in front of a baby pink background.

Political :

Ariana Grande is an US citizen which makes it easier for her as an artist to perform in different states in America . It is also easier for her to tour in other countries in EU because she doesn’t need a VISA .

Economical :

Ariana Grande’s net worth is $50 million dollars which will make her a highly anticipated artist . Also with those money she would not have any problems in creating a future album because of the covers she has . Also her first album ‘’ Yours truly ‘’ was extremely successful as she made

$679,360 from 10 shows.

Like Kacey Musgraves and Ariana Grande, My Saturn Return Changed Everything

essay my idol ariana grande

I'm the poster child for a Saturn Return success story. I quit my corporate 9-5, got married, moved cities, bought a house, and started my own business — all during my Saturn Return.

Saturn Return has been in the collective consciousness lately for a variety of reasons. From viral social media stars to celebrities, everyone is talking about this cosmic coming of age. Ariana Grande, for example, has a track titled " Saturn Returns Interlude " on her latest album, and Kacey Musgraves sings about hers in " Deeper Well ," saying, "My Saturn has returned / when I turned 27 / everything started to change."

Put simply, your Saturn Return marks a time when you cross the threshold into adulthood. Saturn is the planet of structure , discipline, focus, hard work, and delayed gratification in astrology. Between the ages of 27 and 30, the planet Saturn "returns" to the same spot in the night sky as when you were born. During this extended period, usually lasting two to three years, the stars turn up the pressure in your life, forcing you to focus your efforts, energy, and attention on whatever theme Saturn has in store for you.

At first glance, it might look like that dreaded cosmic disciplinarian let me glide right through my 20s. Maybe it was the fortunate position of Jupiter in my birth chart offsetting all that lousy luck the lord of karma and time wanted to send my way. Maybe it was my cool, calm, easygoing attitude. (It was decidedly not: I'm a Cancer with a Gemini moon.)

The truth is my Saturn Return sucked. It created a lot of confusion about where I thought my life was going. It changed every foundational element of my life, from my career to my relationship. And it was a reminder that you can get everything you "want" and still not know what exactly you're getting yourself into.

Take it from a professional: Saturn is proof that an old dog can learn new ways to trick you.

I've always been ambitious, but a bit sloppy with details. (Blame it on my Leo stellium .) I talk before I think, creating the rules as I go. For years, my Saturn in Aquarius not only supported that but allowed me to aspire higher and higher than my dreams had ever taken me. Where was the limit? How far could I go? What was I running from? These were the questions I kept asking myself when I pulled tarot cards during my lunch break, wondering why I still felt so restless.

After all, I was doing what everyone said I never could. I'd somehow landed a lucrative writing job in tech despite having a "useless" humanities degree. I was the daughter of two public school educators, a state school graduate who went from late nights reading "Beowulf" in the library stacks to rubbing elbows with Ivy League start-up founders in the big city. Look at me now, mom! What was I trying to prove — and who was I trying to prove it to?

At the same time that I was signing onto a new job offer, I was settling into my new house in my hometown with my husband. We bought a place in the neighborhood where we had our first date years before, less than an hour from both our parents. I finally had my own space in our home to write, make art, create content, and blast my music a little too loud. This is adulthood, I remember thinking, maybe we'll throw dinner parties in the backyard. But I was still pulling tarot cards looking for a sign that I was on the right track. My Saturn Return had started back in March 2020 and I was a year into this fancy new life and still feeling like I was missing something.

Saturn always let me think I was two steps ahead of whatever emotional baggage was clearly weighing on my mind. So what if my Saturn was square with my Midheaven , an aspect that causes a crisis of identity? I was winning, I thought. And always in on the joke, Saturn let me dance right to the edge of the cliff and sign my dream job offer just two days before my exact Saturn Return sent me into a spiritual quarter-life crisis.

In February 2021, a month after starting my fancy new job, I pulled the tarot card that changed my life: the Eight of Pentacles . Apprenticeship and mastery? Conquering the impossible through hours of endless study? This was something I knew I could do. And what auspicious timing! I was just taking over a high-profile project from my new boss and was confident that with enough effort and research, I could make a lasting impression on the team and leadership. But it seemed that no matter how hard I worked to appeal to my boss, she wasn't moved.

Saturn's journey from one sign to the next is said to have an immediate effect as soon as it transitions. With Saturn retrograde in Aquarius, I was supposed to feel called to rebellion; instead, I was smoothing my edges so as not to snare my boss's fragile sensibilities.

Confused by my own lack of progress — despite the clear signs the stars were sending me — I dove deeper into my esoteric studies: horoscopes, tarot, numerology, whatever could give me the secret to winning over my boss. I stalked her Instagram to figure out her birthday (and therefore her zodiac sign). I ran our synastry to see if our mentor-mentee relationship was incompatible. It was. I ignored it.

There was a period during the summer when I thought things could be turned around. But you know what they say about Saturn forcing you to perform the same task over and over again until you master it. Some lessons are hard to learn. I tracked the stars looking for my way into their world, and the answer was always the same: You don't belong here. You've overstayed your welcome. You need a way out.

Saturn gave me a huge blessing in the form of a harsh reality check.

Saturn gave me a huge blessing in the form of a harsh reality check just a month shy of my one-year work anniversary. A seemingly routine Zoom call with my boss about a project devolved into accusations of complacency and a cross-examination of my commitment to the company. She told me I didn't want it bad enough. I told her I quit effective immediately. I spent the rest of the week punitively ruminating on all the things I'd done wrong in our talks.

Lost in the void that I'd created for myself, I turned to the stars to look for a sign of what I was missing. They gave me the same answer as always: write what you know. I quit my job on Tuesday, posted about my job search Friday of that same week, and by the end of the month, I was working as a freelance horoscope writer and astrologer after years of tinkering as a hobbyist. I relied on the skills I'd just spent the last year sharpening — and ignoring — to try and win my old boss over. Funny how that works.

In her book " Saturn: A New Look at an Old Devil ," astrologer Liz Greene says there is no fast and easy method of making a friend of Saturn. But it's possible for Saturn to have a sense of humor if we ourselves can become subtle enough to understand his irony.

Saturn entered Pisces on March 7, 2023, leaving me older, wiser, and a touch more frazzled than before. But as a survivor of Saturn's reign through Aquarius, I now welcome the practicality of this cosmic taskmaster. Let's just hope I'm still fond of his jokes when my second Saturn Return hits in 2050.

Ariana Grande shared a powerful essay on social media that touched on the double standards between men and women following her breakup with rapper Big Sean .

Big Sean & Ariana Grande Confirm Breakup

“What I meant when I said what I said about not being Sean’s ex is that I am tired of living in a world where women are mostly referred to as a man’s past, present, or future PROPERTY/POSSESSION,” Grande wrote in the essay, which she posted Sunday (June 7) on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. “I… do not. belong. to anyone. but myself. and neither do you.”

“I’m saying this after literally 8 years of feeling like I constantly had to have a boy by my side,” she wrote. “After being on my own now for a few months I am realizing that that’s just not the case… I have never felt more present, grounded, and satisfied. I’ve never laughed harder or had more fun or enjoyed my life more.”

Grande said she comes from a “long bloodline of female activists” and longs for the day when misogyny and double standards between men and women cease to exist.

“I can’t wait to live in a world where people are not valued by who they’re dating/married to/attached to, having sex with (or not)/seen with…. but by their value as an individual. I want the people reading this to know that they are MORE THAN enough on their own,” she wrote.

Grande is currently on the road in Europe supporting her latest album, My Everything .

Write a letter to your idol or an inspiring person

Write a letter to your idol or an inspiring person.

Profile picture for user lecongtuan

Dear Ariana Grande, It's such an honor of being a fan of yours. It's true because of your voice, your melodies,... It always makes me feel energetic, active, positive, etc. And I write this letter to explain that you are one of my idols that I like the most. All of this thing comes from the summer of 2018 when I had trouble at my thinking about giving a decision about which major I should learn at university. I was extremely confusing but then I heard the comfortable melodies and a beautiful voice that made me feel better. I wonder where It came from and I saw my friends were dancing to your song named "Break Free". It's pretty fascinating but I didn't know it's yours so I asked my friends then they told me. After I heard it, your voice and your melodies inspire me a lot, I completely turn into a guy who is positive and open-minded. Eventually, I could make the decision that it is choosing a major that I was good at and liked best. After that I often find and watch all your music videos, I realized that you have a phenomenal voice that you are capable of singing at all the notes that you like. I'm impressed that you can accomplish the high notes smoothly, especially the whistle note. It sounds like birds, nature,... and I believed that I want to do that too. Because I have a high pitch voice and I'm so into singing so I decided to learn the whistle note day by day while I was watching your videos. As a result, I could do a little bit of the whistle note register but It's not clear and smooth and I think I will take time to train and improve it. I wish you could see this letter so you will know that you're the queen of my heart. Thanks for everything of yours that helps me a lot in my life. I don't hope that you know me but I hope that you realize you helped someone in this world. Best wishes, Larry

A man in 17th-century dress dances with a woman.

By Shivani Gonzalez

For those who still haven’t cut the cord, here is a selection of cable and network TV shows, movies and specials that broadcast this week, May 6-12. Details and times are subject to change.

THE PARENT TRAP (1998) 8 p.m. on Freeform. With Lindsay Lohan returning to the screen in “Irish Wish,” why not go back down memory lane? This movie stars Lohan as both Annie and Hallie (some flawless split-screening was involved), twins separated at birth who meet at summer camp and team up to get their divorced parents back together. One of their roadblocks is their dad’s girlfriend, Meredith Blake (Elaine Hendrix), who has gone down in Y2K history as one of its chicest villains.

VANDERPUMP RULES REUNION 8 p.m. on Bravo. This three-part reunion, which will rehash Season 11 of “Vanderpump Rules,” is a must-watch after the finale left lots of questions up in air, starting with: Is there a post-#Scandoval future for this reality show ? The episode last week ended on a cliffhanger, with Ariana Madix walking out of filming after her ex boyfriend Tom Sandoval approached her at a party.

ROYAL RULES OF OHIO 10:30 p.m. on Freeform. On this brand-new reality show, three sisters, who claim to be descendants of Ghana royalty, try to balance day-to-day life in Columbus, Ohio, with their parents’ upper-crust expectations — shenanigans and mischief ensue. Since I blasted through all eight seasons of “Summer House” at an inappropriately fast rate, it’s exciting that there is a new reality show in the mix.

LAW & ORDER 8 p.m. on NBC. The franchise’s O.G. show celebrated a milestone this season — the penultimate episode of the season, which aired last week, was the show’s 500th. Maybe now the show can set its sights on beating “General Hospital’s” record: more than 15,000 episodes — and counting.

LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT 9 p.m. on NBC. Due to the writers and actors strike, Season 25 of this show was short but still packed it’s regular procedural punch. This is the season finale.

LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME 10 p.m. on NBC. The newest baby of the franchise is wrapping up its fourth season and finding a new home. Because the show has lagged behind its older counterparts in ratings , the fifth season will be airing only on Peacock.

MARY & GEORGE 9 p.m. on Starz. If you loved Nicholas Galitzine as a swoony boy band lead in “The Idea of You,” check him out in this mini-series with Julianne Moore as the Countess of Buckingham and Galitzine as her son George. Inspired by the novel “The King’s Assassin” by Benjamin Woolley, the mother and son duo use sex and charm for status-climbing in 17th-century Britain.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA (2006) 7:06 p.m. on HBO. Now that you’ve watched Anne Hathaway as a dreamy single mom who falls for Galitzine’s lead singer, take in one of her seminal roles. Hathaway plays Andy, a want-to-be journalist who takes a job as the assistant to Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the icy and powerful editor in chief of Runway Magazine. If you’re picturing a Anna Wintour type character and magazine similar to Vogue, you’re on the right track.

THE IRON CLAW (2023) 8 p.m. on HBO. Apparently, some people went into the theater thinking this movie was a lighthearted tale of wrestling and an excuse to admire Zac Efron but left sobbing inconsolably (OK, fine, it was me). The movie, based on the true story of Von Erich family, follows four wrestler brothers as they deal with unrelenting tragedy. It doesn’t take long “to know that the wildest scenes aren’t going to happen in the ring,” Manohla Dargis wrote in her review for The New York Times. “They’re going to take place in the family circle.”

AMERICAN IDOL 8 p.m. on ABC. This season of the singing competition show is coming to an end, and so is the impeccable group dynamic of Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and Katy Perry, as this is Perry’s last season. The three-hour finale will feature Jon Bon Jovi mentoring the season’s top three contestants as they prep for their final performance.
