SWAMI VIVEKANANDA: HIS LIFE, LEGACY, & LIBERATIVE ETHICS

Profile image of Rita D . Sherma, PhD

2021, Edited by Rita D. Sherma | Lexington Explorations in Indic Traditions: Theological, Ethical, and Philosophical

DESCRIPTION With historical-critical analysis and dialogical even-handedness, the essays of this book re-assess the life and legacy of Swami Vivekananda, forged at a time of colonial suppression, from the vantage point of socially-engaged religion at a time of global dislocations and international inequities. Due to the complexity of Vivekananda as a historical figure on the cusp of late modernity with its vast transformations, few works offer a contemporary, multi-vocal, nuanced, academic examination of his liberative vision and legacy in the way that this volume does. It brings together North American, European, British, and Indian scholars associated with a broad array of humanistic disciplines towards critical-constructive, contextually-sensitive reflections on one of the most important thinkers and theologians of the modern era. PRAISE FOR: Swami Vivekananda: His Life, Legacy, and Liberative Ethics —Ramdas Lamb, University of Hawai'i “Because Swami Vivekananda was such a well-known and respected teacher in India, he is present in nearly every English language textbook on world religions. Although his name has become familiar to many in the west, relatively little about him and his tremendous legacy is actually known. Swami Vivekananda: His Life, Legacy, and Liberative Ethics, edited by Rita D. Sherma, is an important vehicle to aid in fulfilling this lacuna. To do so, Professor Sherma has assembled a collection of respected scholars from various disciplines and backgrounds, and each one brings to light significant aspects of Swami Vivekananda’s life, work, and teachings from their own varied and unique perspectives. In their diverse understandings of him, the various authors provide valuable insights and in the process challenge some of the misunderstandings and assumptions about Vivekananda and the broader Hindu tradition. Every reader will likely come away with a heightened awareness about and respect for Swami Vivekananda and the legacy of wisdom he left for us to learn from and follow.”

The Bloomsbury Research Handbook of Vedānta is a groundbreaking volume of sixteen newly commissioned chapters written by leading international scholars of Vedānta. The volume highlights the diversity of philosophical traditions within Vedānta, exploring their contemporary relevance and charting out new directions for research. Contributors include Neil Dalal, Marcus Schmücker, Michael Williams, Ravi M. Gupta, Jeffery D. Long, Stephen Phillips, Andrew J. Nicholson, Ankur Barua, Klara Hedling, Francis X. Clooney, Daniel Raveh, Anand Vaidya, Ethan Mills, Arindam Chakrabarti, and Ayon Maharaj. The hardcover edition of the book will be available on 25 June 2020. Endorsements: “"Showcasing material from a commendably wide range of Vedāntin traditions and time periods, this Research Handbook provides tantalising tasters of intra-Vedāntin debates, ways of approaching texts, and modes of engaging Vedānta in cross-cultural conversations. With orienting introductions and bibliographies opening up the work of other important scholars in the field, this collection should provoke further specialist investigations and prove a rich source for those who are not specialists in Vedānta but would like to engage with these Indian examples of Asian Philosophy.”” – Jacqueline Suthren Hirst, Honorary Research Fellow in South Asian Studies, University of Manchester, UK “The Bloomsbury Research Handbook of Vedānta brings the work of scholars shaping the field of Indian philosophy into a volume that presses forward into the future of Vedānta scholarship. The book refutes misconceptions, and corrects for the historical imbalance in the coverage of this diverse set of traditions, by covering the philosophy of Viśiṣṭādvaita, Dvaitādvaita, Bhedābheda, and Advaita too, ranging from the earliest authoritative texts of the traditions to the most influential modern and contemporary thinkers. Ayon Maharaj's precise overview of Vedānta in the introduction makes the book accessible to the eager, beginning student of Indian philosophy, even as the articles push the reader into unexplored material, original theses, and innovative cross-cultural work. The book deserves a place among even small collections of contemporary research on Indian philosophy.” – Christopher Framarin, Professor of Philosophy, University of Calgary, Canada

BEACONS OF DHARMA: Spiritual Exemplars of the Modern Age, Edited by Christopher Miller, Jeffery D. Long, Michael Reading

Rita D . Sherma, PhD

“The colonial-era Bengal of Sri Ramakrishna’s childhood was deeply influenced by the theology and praxis of Śaktism, Vaiṣṇava bhakti , and Caitanya Gauḍiya Vaiṣṇavism. These various influences informed the early religious life of Sri Ramakrishna. Ultimately, however, the bedrock of Ramakrishna’s life and faith turned out to be Śakta bhakti, a theological blend that included the ontology of Śakta Tantra, and certain principles of Ādvaita Vedānta, practiced in the mood of loving surrender to a vision of Supreme Reality properly understood and experienced as the Divine Mother of the Cosmos, deeply immanent and pervasive. The nature of the Divine that such an experience engendered was integrative of care and compassion, of love and liberation—amply exemplified by Sri Ramakrishna’s attitude towards both humans and other sentient beings. Such a perspective, in its final consummation, became the guiding principle for the Ramakrishna Order and its pioneering model of service as socially-engaged spiritual practice.” --Rita D. Sherma

In Alan Race & Paul Knitter, eds., New Paths for Interreligious Theology: Perry Schmidt-Leukel’s Fractal Interpretation of Religious Diversity (Maryknoll, NY: Orbis), pp. 100-114

In his thought-provoking book Religious Pluralism and Interreligious Theology (2017), Perry Schmidt-Leukel breaks new ground in highlighting the pluralist tendencies in various religions and in developing an intriguing "fractal" paradigm for understanding religious diversity. This essay tries to identify some of the strengths and weaknesses of Schmidt-Leukel's views on religious pluralism and interreligious theology. Part I argues that his account of the pluralist and inclusivist strains in modern Hinduism is based on a selective and somewhat inaccurate interpretation of the views of Sri Ramakrishna and his famous disciple, Swami Vivekananda. Contrary to Schmidt-Leukel, I contend that both Ramakrishna and Vivekananda championed a full-blown doctrine of religious pluralism that has immense contemporary relevance. Part II turns the tables on Schmidt-Leukel by critically examining his fractal model of interreligious theology from the pluralist standpoint of Ramakrishna and Vivekananda.

Swami Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo are often considered the most important figures in the modern reformulations of Vedanta and Yoga. There were a number of similarities as well as significant differences in their approaches, and I will look at some of these in the course of this study.

My argument proceeds in three layers, which move from the more particular to the more general and from the concrete to the speculative. In a first, preliminary discussion, I briefly survey recent developments in Christian missiology that have significantly complicated our understanding of “mission” as an interpretive category, suggesting that history reveals no singular understanding of Christian “mission,” but diverse—even incommensurable—missionary paradigms, models or types. In the second section, I attempt to apply this insight to the historical development of Advaita Vedānta by highlighting what I judge to be three major “paradigms” of Advaita mission: the compassionate teacher depicted in Ādi Śaṅkarācārya’s eighth-century, independent treatise Upadeśasāhasrī, the image of Śaṅkara himself as a conquering avatāra of Śiva in the late medieval hagiographical tradition (dig-vijaya) and the image of the Buddha as the first “Hindu missionary” in the speeches of Vivekānanda. Without claiming to be comprehensive, I argue that these three idealized paradigms reveal both significant historical continuity and substantive diversity in advancing Advaita as a missionary movement. Finally, in a more speculative vein, I suggest that the distinctive profiles of the four disciples depicted in the most prominent hagiography, Mādhava’s Śaṅkaradigvijaya, might serve to rationalize different forms or styles that Advaita mission has taken, and can take, in the modern and contemporary periods. Throughout, my interest in the essay is both historical and constructive. That is, I hope to add clarity to what it might mean to refer to Advaita as a distinctive missionary movement in the history of South Asia, as well as to bring to light fruitful interpretive tools for more fully understanding the diverse missionary activities of Advaita traditions in the present day.

This article presents a case study centered on religious reforms of Hindu gurus teaching in the West. Discursive traditions of India and liberation therapeutics in America provide the referential basis for discourse processing of emergent concepts widely distributed with spiritual representations of the Upanishads. Confronted with a lack of counterparts in different cultural repertoires, it is argued that traditional categories of Vedanta are significantly decontextualized in neocolonial narratives of Hinduism. The dichotomy of tradition and secular modernity, however, is replaced with transcultural modes of religious contact and transfer. A set of hypotheses is deduced for future research towards distinguishing variant discourses of Indian spirituality based on empirical observation of contemporary forms of Hindu nationalism. keywords: social anthropology—comparative semiotics—Hindu gurus— Advaita Vedanta—transnational discourse—religion in America

In retrospect, the abstract should be read something like this: WHAT’S NEW ABOUT NEW AGE GURUS? proposes that well before the rise of those spiritual teachers dubbed “New Age gurus” in Indian press, there was precedent for innovation and breaking with “tradition” within Indian religious traditions. Thus, innovation for Indian gurus is – in a sense – following tradition. The essay also serves as somewhat of a literature review on modern/contemporary gurus, pre 2010, when it was published.

Swami vivekananda: the complete biography by sri ananda (vol. 1).

Swami Vivekananda: The Complete Biography

  • The book in four volumes is a comprehensive biography of Swami Vivekananda, the great philosopher of the East, incorporating information from most authentic sources. The book chronologically describes all the events in the life of Vivekananda right from his birth to demise of the great soul along with a brief history of his family background. It explores the transformation of Narendranath into Swami Vivekananda under Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa.
  • It minutely discusses Vivekananda’s multi-dimensional qualities such as his vast knowledge of Eastern and Western culture as well as his spiritual insight, fervid eloquence, brilliant conversations, inspiring lectures and letters, unparallel compassion, great personality, love for humanity, manifestation of divine character; and his everyday activities and actions for the human beings who are at the grass root levels. A sincere attempt has been made to explain these aspects of Vivekananda’s personality in a comprehensive and lucid manner. The book includes almost all the lectures delivered by Vivekananda in America, Europe, and India; and consequent reports appeared in several newspapers, reactions and repercussions, quotations and statements from several articles written by those who had an opportunity of associating with the great philosopher and having a chance to interact with him.
  • The book describes Vivekananda's activities, following each of his footsteps throughout the journey of his life. The first volume contains all the events of Vivekananda's life before his first visit to the West. The second volume discusses his first visit to the West. The third volume incorporates all the events of Vivekananda's life after his return from the first visit to the West. The fourth volume describes Vivekananda's second and last visit to the West and his life thereafter. It also contains the details of demise of this great personality of India.
