• Trivia Hanu Raghavpudi, the director of the film, got the idea for the film when he bought a book that had an unopened inland letter. Regarding the same, he told The Hindu, "The letter I found in that book, in 2007, was from a mother to her son. I gathered that their family is from Vijayawada and the son is living in a hostel. She had enquired about his well being and asked when he would be home. It got me thinking, what if the contents of the letter had something crucial that could change the course of events?". சீதா ராமம்: திரை விமர்சனம்

உறவுகள் யாருமற்ற ராணுவ வீரர் ராமுக்கு (துல்கர் சல்மான்), சீதா மகாலட்சுமி (மிருணாள் தாக்குர்) என்ற பெயரில் இருந்து காதல் கடிதங்கள் வருகின்றன. தன்னை ராமின் மனைவி என்று சொல்லிக்கொள்ளும், அந்த முகவரி இல்லாத கடிதத்தின் விலாசத்தை தேடி கண்டுபிடிக்கிறார் ராம். வீட்டை மீறி திருமணம் நடக்கிறது.

இந்நிலையில், பயங்கரவாதியைக் கொல்வதற்காக, நாட்டின் எல்லை தாண்டுகிறார் ராம். அவர் திரும்பி வந்தாரா? சீதாயார்? என்பது பிளாஷ்பேக்கில் விரிய, காதல் மனைவிக்காக 20 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் ராம் எழுதிய கடிதத்தை கொடுக்க வரும் அஃப்ரீத் யார்? என்பதை சுவாரஸ்யமாக சொல்கிறது ‘சீதா ராமம்’.

ஓர் இனிமையான காதல் கதையை,ராணுவப் பின்னணியில் சுகமாக செதுக்கியுள்ளார் இயக்குநர் ஹனு ராகவபுடி. அதற்கு ஆழமாக உதவுகிறது, ஆச்சரியமான திருப்பங்கள் கொண்ட அவரது திரைக்கதை. முதல் பாதி சற்று நெளிய வைத்தாலும் இரண்டாம் பாதி, இழுத்துப் பிடித்து அமரவைத்துவிடுகிறது.

ரொமான்டிக் ஹீரோ கதாபாத்திரத்தில் தன்னை மீண்டும் ஒரு முறை நிரூபித்துள்ளார் துல்கர். மனிதாபிமானம் உள்ள ராணுவ வீரராகவும், முன்பின் தெரியாதகாதலி சீதாவை நினைத்து ஏங்குவதிலும், அவரை கண்டதும் பொங்கும் காதலைபுன்னகையில் சிந்துவதும், வருவதாகசொல்லிச் சென்று வராமல்போன சீதாவுக்காக சோகம் நிறைந்து சுழல்வதுமாக ராமாகவே மாறியிருக்கிறார் துல்கர்.

துல்கரின் காதலியாக மிருணாள் தாக்குர். இருவருக்குமான கெமிஸ்ட்ரி கச்சிதம். பாகிஸ்தானை சேர்ந்த அஃப்ரீத்தாக ராஷ்மிகா. வித்தியாசமான கதாபாத்திரத்தை மிகவும் சிறப்பாக்கி இருக்கிறார்.

மேஜர் செல்வனாக கவுதம் வாசுதேவ் மேனன், பிரிகேடியர் விஷ்ணுவாக சுமந்த்,ராஷ்மிகாவின் தாத்தாவாக சச்சின் கடேகர், பாலாஜியாக தருண் பாஸ்கர், நாடகநண்பர் வெண்ணிலா கிஷோர் என அனைவருமே இயல்பான நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்துகின்றனர்.

விஷால் சந்திரசேகரின் பாடல்கள் ஈர்க்கவில்லை என்றாலும் பின்னணி இசை, கதையோடு கைபிடித்து இழுத்துச் செல்கிறது. மதன் கார்க்கியின் வசனம், படத்துக்கு பலம். பி.எஸ்.வினோத், ஸ்ரேயாஸ் கிருஷ்ணாவின் ஒளிப்பதிவு, காஷ்மீரின் குளிரை அதே ஜில்லோடு நமக்கும் கடத்துகிறது.

காஷ்மீருக்கு வரும் நூர்ஜஹான், ஏன் பொட்டு வைத்திருக்க வேண்டும்? 20 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு பின் உண்மையைச் சொன்னாலும், அது தனக்கு விளைவுகளை ஏற்படுத்தும் என்பது, மீண்டு வந்த பிரிகேடியருக்கு தெரியாதா? யாரோ ஓர் இளைஞனுடன் சுற்றும் இளவரசியை, ஊரில் ஒருவருக்கும் தெரியாமல் போவது எப்படி? என்பது போன்ற கேள்விகள் பல்லில் பட்டகல்லாக கூசினாலும், பாயசத்தில் முந்திரியாக ருசிக்கிறது இந்த ‘சீதா ராமம்’.

Sita Ramam movie review: Good looks of Dulquer Salmaan, Mrunal Thakur hold this dull romantic story together

Sita ramam movie review: the screen presence of dulquer salmaan and mrunal thakur does add a little vigour to the otherwise dull narration. the film majorly leverages the good looks of its actors to make it tolerable..

Love transcends all barriers, including religion, politics and language. That is the main driving emotion of director Hanu Raghavapudi’s latest romantic movie Sita Ramam . In a way, this film, set against the volatile backdrop of modern-day geopolitics, is the director’s reimagination of Ramayana. Afreen (Rashmika Mandanna), a Pakistan national, takes up the role of Hanuman from the epic, as she carries a message from Rama to Sita.

Afreen is a proud Pakistani, who is politically conditioned to respond negatively to anything Indian. In a fit of anger, she destroys the car of a rich Indian philanthropist in London. The victim of Afreen’s violent action gives her two options: admit her mistake and apologise or pay a million rupees. If she can’t do both, she may end up in jail.

Afreen agrees to pay the rich man, instead of repenting. So she heads back to Pakistan to meet her wealthy grandfather and pay the fine. The catch is, she hasn’t spoken to him in years due to a disagreement and finds out that he has passed away. Not to worry, her grandfather’s estate is enough to solve her financial problems. Again, there is a catch: She has to first do an errand for him. The mission is simple: take the letter written by an Indian soldier, Ram, to the woman he loves, Sita, in India. If Afreen fails to do this, she can kiss her family’s fortune goodbye. She doesn’t seem to have much of an option now, does she?

Afreen takes a flight to India, a journey that transforms her into a person who understands you can love someone, without hating others.

Hanu weaves the narrative around a beautiful message of the shared history of love, peace and brotherhood. But, the theme that was supposed to be the film’s biggest strength becomes its glaring weakness: romance. The way the romance develops between Ram ( Dulquer Salmaan ) and Sita (Mrunal Thakur) feels forced. The back and forth conversation between the two wide-eyed young people is naive, uninteresting and feels overly stretched.

What this film needed was a lot more focus on the love story and less on presenting Ram as this impeccable man of integrity. A director doesn’t need 10 scenes to establish one fact. If done right, a single shot is enough to establish that.

However, the screen presence of Dulquer and Mrunal does add a little vigour to the otherwise dull flow of narration. The film majorly rests on the good looks of its actors to make it tolerable.

Pradeep Rawat, known for his negative roles in the 80s and 90s, recently shared his memories of shooting for Rakesh Roshan's Koyla. He revealed that Hrithik Roshan, who was an assistant director on the film, would bring the script to Johnny Lever. Sita Ramam Review: Epic Love Story!

Director Hanu Raghavapudi, who is struggling to score a commercial success, has teamed up with the makers of Mahanati for a war love story Sita Ramam. Dulquer, Mrunal were roped in for the lead roles along with the ensemble cast. Going by the trailer and promos, the visuals and songs are promising. Will Hanu score this time and break the jinx? Check out our take on the film.

Set in 1964, Lieutenant Ram (Dulquer), an orphan army officer serving at Kashmir border, gets anonymous love letters from Sita Mahalakshmi (Mrunal Thakur). Ram is on a mission to find Sita and propose his love. He meets Sita and reciprocates his love. Sita too loves Ram, but she has her problems due to her family, Who is Sita? What’s her real identity? Do Sita and Ram unite? Meanwhile, 20 years later, Ram’s last letter to Sita remains undelivered. Afreen (Rashmika) is assigned to deliver the letter to Sita by her grandfather-army general (Sachin Khedkar). What’s the story of Ram & Sita and how Afreen is connected to this?

Performances :

Dulquer shined as Lieutenant Ram. He dubbed himself for his character that showed his dedication. Be it romance or emotion, Dulquer just nailed it. Mrunal Thakur is too good as Sita. The couple look easy on the eyes. Mrunal’s character has a lot of depth. Unlike the regular female lead characters, Sita is strong, independent besides being beautiful, kind. The film revolves around her character and her love story. It is indeed an impressive debut in Telugu for Mrunal and she would bag many more films with her act. Rashmika Mandanna too has a brilliant character. Right from her introduction scene to the climax, her character evolves with the story. Sumanth as Vishnu Sharma is alright. He has got a supportive role that has a lot of significance in the film. He is below par. The scenes in jail require a lot of pain & emotion but Sumanth flatters in those episodes. Tharun Bhascker as Balaji is good. He aids Afreen in finding Sita and takes the story forward. Vennela Kishore’s role brings some smiles in this serious emotional period love story. Jissu Sengupta got a brief role, yet it gets noticed. The film’s cast includes Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Bhumika Chawla and Murali Sharma who all do justice to their roles. Director Hanu succeeded with the film’s cast and their flawless performances.

Technicalities :

Hanu Raghavapudi’s strength lies in his visuals and music. He underscores in his writing. Yet again, he banked upon these strengths that worked for Sita Ramam as well. Technically, the film scores well. The making and presentation took the film to the next level. PS Vinod captures beautiful visuals. Every frame is like a painting. Vishal Chandrasekhar’s music is a huge asset. Songs and Background elevate the film. Production values are too good. The grandeur is seen throughout the film.

Thumbs Down Predictability Slow In Portions

On the premise, Sita Ramam is a love story of Sita and Rama. But there is a lot more than just a love story. Why is Ram’s letter to Sita relevant after 20 years? This question haunts at the beginning but it is justified well in the film for which one has to wait patiently till the end. How the patriotism is blended into this period love story and how Pakistani girl Afreen is connected to the tale of Sita, Rama sets for a big screen experience. Even Sita’s real identity is a big revelation in the film which is saved for interval. Director Hanu Raghavapudi strikes the chords of the audience on these two points. Screenplay is used brilliantly to narrate this period story.

One big plus point for the film is the cast and terrific performances. Dulquer gets under the skin of Ram. Mrunal as Sita is flawless, brilliant. She breathes life into her character. Makers have envisioned well that Mrunal would be perfect to play Sita. Every character has relevance in the story narration. It happens seldom. Visuals do the talking mostly in the film. PS Vinod and Vishal Chandrasekhar are the unsung heroes of this poetic love story. The frames are like a fine painting. Poetic narration works for this film. Kudos to the makers whose passion is visible in the grandeur, scale and ensemble cast. Art directors did a splendid job as well in recreating the 1960s and 1980s era. Technically, Sita Ramam has no flaws.

Hanu’s previous films suffered with the second-half syndrome. But it is the latter half that scores brownie points in Sita Ramam and turns the tide. Yes, like every movie, Sita Ramam too has its own share of shortcomings. The makers seem to have tried hard to generate humour at some portions, but it only flattered. Barring here and there, comedy didn’t work much. Ram and Sita are the life for this tale. There is an Agartala episode where a group of Muslims try to burn the houses of Hindus based on false propaganda. And Ram comes to the rescue and averts a big tragedy. The Hindu-Muslim unite and their bond strengthens. There are a couple of such touching patriotic scenes. The important mission in the film is where Indian army goes to the POK to kill an Islamist terrorist. Towards the end, all the dots get connected well and the end justifies the means.

However, some scenes and twists suffer with predictability and nostalgia. Bereft of this, the film works well. It just caters what it is projected to be and aimed for. Overall, it is worth a watch for its scale, grandeur, visuals and solid performances. Sita Ramam works with the class audiences. It is an experience to be experienced on the big screen.

SITA RAMAM MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Sita Ramam is a Telugu romantic period film written and directed by Hanu Raghavapudi. Dulquer Salmaan pairing with Mrunal Thakur and Rashmika Mandanna playing the supporting role forms the lead cast. It is produced by Vyjayanthi movies and Swapna cinemas. This film had a multilingual release and the distribution for Tamil Nadu is by Lyca productions. This review is based on the Tamil dubbed version.

Afreen played by Rashmika Mandanna is left with a job of delivering a letter to Sita Lakshmi by her deceased grandfather only after which she could get her inheritance. The love story of Ram and Sita continues to unfold along with her journey, forming the foundation for this epic romance.

Dulquer Salmaan looks smart as a lover boy and robust as a soldier. Mrunal Thakur glows with her innocent, mixed oomph looks. There is a ravishing chemistry between these two characters. Rashmika needs to be lauded for her decision to play out this role. This role has only a limited screen time but a rigid one. The cast of this film is its biggest positive as everyone delivers their mail to the right address.

The film is peddled more than its actual position only by the onscreen presence of Dulquer and Mrunal. They lift the film in its entirety as their pairing is a delight to watch. Comical scenes involving Vennela Kishore and Murali Sharma falls rightly to bring in laughter. Gautam Menon's cameo lifts the mood of the scenario. The love scenes follow the usual template and we do not get any fresh scenes. The twist at the interval does not excite much.

Vishal Chandrasekhar has indeed elevated the film with his timely musical cues. Though songs hinder the evolution of plot it manages to catch our attention by enticing visuals. P.S. Vinod and Shreyas Krishna worked hand in hand for the splendid visuals. Though the film needs a bit trimming, Venkateswara Rao did his best to curtail the run time. Art department had toiled hard to build the interiors of the palace which brings magnificence to the table.

The film discusses a lot of controversial themes at its forefront including religion. The audacity of the script to retell Ramayana with a different background is commendable. Visual treatment of scenes involving snow and army backdrop stands out. The idea behind the script is quirky but working on it needed a lot of hard work.

The romance between the pair is not as thick as their chemistry.  As the film progresses towards the poetic climax, it loses all its poetic tendency as we feel exhausted at the end of the film due to its over stretched screenplay and predictability concerns.

Sita Ramam Movie Review: A Fairy-Tale Love Saga With A Burning Heart Laced By Brilliant Background Score

Sita ramam is flawed but good and you must not ignore the efforts gone into making this ambitious story..

What’s Good: It is a love story lived and doomed. The storytelling makes it poetic and the actors add the charm. The beauty is all around.

What’s Bad: The effort that is clearly visible to make it more poetic and the predictable turns.

Loo Break: When the turns are predictable, that’s your cue. The second half gets better though.

Watch or Not?: Watch it for a cinematic experience that is poetic and heart-breaking.

A young Pakistani woman Afreen (Rashmika) is forced to deliver a letter to Sita (Mrunal) in India by her dead grandfather because he is in debt of the writer Ram (Dulquer). Lesser does Afreen know that she is setting out to explore a love story and also see a transformation in herself.

Sita Ramam Movie Review: Script Analysis

Unrequited love, bonds that know no border, and the charm that resembles the world where love was in letters, these might look like elements from the cinema of the past. But time and again when storytellers of our generation crack it right, it only makes me immensely happy. Welcome, Sita Ramam, a musical saga that blends love and tragedy with its tune so well that you kind of ignores the flaws. But I can’t.

Story by Hanu Raghavapudi, Sita Ramam in a way is packed like the amazing Mahanati. A youngster is forced to get into a story to reach a goal and they discover not just the tragedy but themselves. But that is not where you cancel the Dulquer starrer for, because the content inside is entirely different. Divided into two time zones, the 1960s and the 80s, the film constantly keeps juggling between the two. While the present seems to be a bit shaky, it is the flashback where all the power lies.

Shaping it like a fairy tale, Hanu sets his story in the immaculate whites of the snow, and the lush greens of the forest and between this are his Star crossed lovers who were never meant to be together. There is a mystery for everyone to solve and that’s how Raghavapudi keeps us invested. There is an orphan who has no one, and a queen who is lonely even with a family. They come together to become one and that is a very beautiful thought.

The emotion of Sita Ramam stays at the right place at every moment and that is what sails the boat for this movie that does get too predictable and branched out at a point. But the redemption is that the makers don’t just focus at the love story but everything around it too. In Afreen, they shape each of that young mind that thinks the other country and their religion is bad while theirs is the supreme. The ‘they & us’ phenomenon gets addressed.

But there are also moments that kind of question logic. The sudden unity in the Kashmir valley without questioning, or how does no one in her state not know that the woman roaming around without a cover is their princess and why don’t they tell this to Ram?

Sita Ramam Movie Review: Star Performance

Dulquer Salmaan and his innocence only gets better. There are a very few actor with their innocence intact and can bring it out effortlessly. He is one of them. There is conviction in both love and war.

Mrunal Thakur enters the movie like another character that might turn out to a catalyst to the hero’s journey, but she with the makers proves everyone wrong. It is here around whom the story actually shapes up. In her calculated dramatic performance Thakur proves she can do this too. Do I need to tell you how beautiful she looks?

Rashmika has to be the one who goes through visible transformation and the actor in the limited part does it too. I hope she was given more than what she gets.

Sita Ramam Movie Review: Direction, Music

Hanu Raghavapudi looks at world in wide frames and they almost resemble Mani Ratnam’s at times. Destructive love stories are difficult and Ratnam is the boss of the genre, but Hanu manages to almost win this battle with a good score. He creates a fairyland and hits you with a tragedy in the same and that does work well.

Shreyas Krishna and PS Vinod with their cameras help him big time to bring the world alive. Anyone with interest in framing, look at how they play with lights and you will know why they are better than many.

Vishal Chandrashekhar’s music is the thread that binds this movie. The theme is so heart aching that it stays with you even when the movie ends.

Sita Ramam Movie Review: The Last Word

Sita Ramam is flawed but good and you must not ignore the efforts gone into making this ambitious story. If this is a stepping stone, I want to see what’s next this team gets on to.

Sita Ramam Movie Review Tamil: துல்கர் சல்மான்,மிருணாள் தாகூர் நடிப்பில் இயக்குநர் ஹனு ராகவபுடி இயக்கத்தில் இன்று வெளியாகியிருக்கும் திரைப்படம்  ‘சீதா ராமம்’(Sita Ramam).  படத்தின் விமர்சனத்தை இங்கு பார்க்கலாம். 

கதையின்கரு: 

காஷ்மீரில் நடக்கும் ஒரு மதக்கலவரத்தில் இளவரசி நூர் ஜஹானை (மிருணாள் தாகூர்), ராணவ வீரர் ராமன் ( துல்கர் சல்மான்) காப்பாற்றுகிறார். இதனையடுத்து துல்கரின் மீது காதல் கொள்ளும் நூர் ஜஹான், அவருக்கு யாருமில்லை என்பதை அறிந்து கொண்டு, காதல் கடிதங்களை எழுதுகிறார்.

ஒருக்கட்டத்தில் இருவரும் சந்தித்து காதல் வளர்த்து வர, திடீரென்று வரும் போர் பணிக்காக கிளம்புகிறார் துல்கர் சல்மான். இறுதியில் அவர் மீண்டும் நாடு திரும்பினாரா..? அவரின் காதல் என்னவானது..? அங்கு அவரது காதலிக்காக எழுதிய கடிதத்தின் நிலை என்ன ? அதற்கும் அஃப்ரீனாவிற்கும் (ராஷ்மிகா) என்ன தொடர்பு..? உள்ளிட்ட கேள்விகளுக்கான விடைதான் சீதா ராமம் படத்தின் கதை. 

நிச்சயம்  ‘சீதா ராமம்’ ஒரு எபிக் திரைப்படம். ராணவ வீரராக வரும் துல்கர், தான் ஒரு காதல் இளவரசன் என்பதை மீண்டும் நிரூபித்து இருக்கிறார். ஜெமினி கணேசனாக காதல் காட்சிகளில் உருக வைக்கும் துல்கர்,  ராணுவம் சம்பந்தப்பட்ட காட்சிகளில் மெச்சூரிட்டியான நடிப்பை கொடுத்து இருக்கிறார்.

மிருணாள் தாகூர் இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் ஆழமான நடிப்பை கொடுத்திருக்கலாம். காமெடி கதாபாத்திரங்களாக காட்டப்படும் வெண்ணிலா கிசோர், முரளி சர்மாவின் கதாபாத்திரங்கள் பெரிதாக எடுபடவில்லை. கவுதம் மேனன், பிரகாஷ்ராஜ் உள்ளிட்ட பிற நடிகர்கள் தங்களுக்கு கொடுக்கப்பட்ட கதாப்பாத்திரங்களுக்கு நியாயம் செய்திருக்கின்றனர். 

படத்தின் ஒன்லைன் மிக சிம்பிளாக தெரிந்தாலும், அந்தக்கதையை அழகான காதல் ஓவியமாக மாற்றியிருக்கிறது திரைக்கதை. ஹனு ராகவபுடி மற்றும் படக்குழுவின் மெனக்கெடலுக்கு பாராட்டுகள். அதற்கு முழுக்க முழுக்க துணை நிற்கிறது பி.எஸ்.வினோத்தின் கேமாரா.

காஷ்மீரின் கொள்ளை அழகை அப்படியே  காட்சிப்படுத்தியதாகட்டும், காதல் சம்பந்தமான காட்சிகளை நெஞ்சுக்கு அருகில் கொண்டு வந்ததாகட்டும் அனைத்து ஃப்ரேம்களும் அசத்தல். 1964 காலக்கட்டங்களை காட்சிப்படுத்த ஆர்ட் டிப்பார்ட்மெண்ட் எடுத்துக்கொண்ட சிரத்தை நிச்சயம் பாராட்டத்தக்கது. பாடல்கள் பெரிதாக கவனம் ஈர்க்கவில்லை. பின்னணி இசையும் ஓகே ரகம்தான். முதல் பாதி திரைக்கதை மெதுவாக செல்வதும், படத்தின் நீளமும் சீதா ராமத்தின் பலவீனங்கள்..   மற்றபடி சீதா ராமம்’ ரசிக்க வைக்கும் திரைப்படம்தான்.

Right from its posters to all the promotional materials, Sita Ramam promised to be an epic love story. Dulquer Salmaan’s charming persona and Mrunal Thakur’s arresting looks screamed romantic. Did Hanu Raghavapudi’s Sita Ramam live up to it?

Afreen (Rashmika Mandanna) is a student president of Pakistan at a university in London. She sets fire to an expensive car because it belongs to an Indian. Set in the 80s, the film talks about the rivalry between Indians and Pakistanis. She is entrusted with the job of delivering a letter to Sita Mahalakshmi (Mrunal Thakur). Her late grandfather Abdul Tariq (Sachin Khedekar), in his will, wrote that Afreen should deliver the letter written by Lieutenant Ram (Dulquer Salmaan).

Who is Ram and how is he related to Sita? What is Afreen’s past and how are Ram and Tariq related? Sita Ramam has answers to these questions.

Director Hanu Raghavapudi’s Sita Ramam is a layered story that talks about unconditional love and humanity over war and enmity. The story goes back and forth and Rashmika’s Afreen takes us through the journey of Sita and Ram falling in love with each other. However, this is not a story with shortcomings.

The first half of Sita Ramam establishes the conflict between Indians and Pakistanis right from the landscape to the internal politics. In the midst are two characters, Sita and Ram, who are true soulmates. Ram is Mr goody-two-shoes and believes that the world needs love. He is a soldier with a soft corner for humans (and animals) even if they belong to a rival country. Ram saves an entire village inhabited by Hindus, who are about to get killed by Muslims due to false propaganda. This impresses Sita, who then writes letters to Ram frequently. Ram and Sita’s love story is based on trust.

While the initial exchanges might sound like a fairy tale, it gets a tad boring when the director tries to include comedy. Sita Ramam tests your patience in the first half. Especially, if you are watching the Tamil version, it is tedious to sit through the film because of the ridiculous dialogues. However, as the story progresses, Sita Ramam holds your attention. All the loose ends in the first half converge in the latter part of the film, giving the audience closure. Sita Ramam also suffers from predictability. The truth about Rashmika Mandanna’s Afreen should move you ideally, but you could guess it long before it actually comes on screen.

Sita Ramam relies heavily on its lead performers, Dulquer Salmaan and Mrunal Thakur. And they hit it out of the park. Dulquer as Ram and Mrunal as Sita are picture perfect. Sumanth, who plays a grey-shaded character in the film, makes things interesting. His character wonderfully brings out the worst side of a human being in difficult circumstances. Rashmika Mandanna's Afreen anchors the story and through her performance, she takes you on the ride of self-discovery.

Sita Ramam is technically sound and visually stunning. Cinematographers PS Vinod and Shreyaas Krishna’s work is simply brilliant. So much so that every frame looks like a painting. Vishal Chandrasekhar’s music is moving. Sita Ramam is also a musical, as opposed to a romantic story about war.

If only Hanu Raghavapudi had ironed out the shortcomings, Sita Ramam could have been a masterpiece.

Sita Ramam movie review: Just short of a classic

At a time when the world thrives on mega-action films with gore, blood and violence (not that I don’t love it), it is nice to see a romance drama.

Starring Dulquer Salmaan , Mrunal Thakur and Rashmika Mandanna in lead roles, Sita Ramam is a visually beautiful tale of love and loss. It has all the makings of being labelled a classic love story, but falls short in certain aspects. The film flits between two time period — the 1960s and the 1980s. It starts with a patriotic young Pakistani woman, Afreen, burning a car of a respected Indian figure in London in 1980s. She has a massive hatred for anything or anyone Indian. She is symbolises the animosity and hatred that brewed between India and Pakistan after the partition. Her hatred of Indians does not stem from personal experience though. She is the granddaughter of Brigadier Taariq, who is clearly against her blind hatred of the neighbouring country.

In contrast to this is Lieutenant Ram. He looks beyond religion and borders, while keeping his patriotism intact. This young man, who went beyond what his role required of him in the army is celebrated for stopping a massacre on a Hindu village in Kashmir. He clears up the misunderstanding that crops up among Kashmiri Muslims after young men are killed by the army. They have credible information about Mujahideen teens who have crossed borders to do as their leader directed. Ram stands between a group of Muslims and Hindus, risks his life to ensure that terror doesn’t rain upon Kashmir.

The contrasts are visible throughout the film, hatred and love. There is also the red and blue of unity, and there is Sitamahalakshmi and Ram. Before his death, Afreen’s grandfather gives her one last task. If she were to complete it, she will inherit his wealth. In need of some urgent money, Afreen accepts the mission and in this journey she unlearns the hatred that had been buried deep within her for her neighboring country. She learns about Ram’s life, his love for his country and the gorgeous Sitamahalakshmi. Her mission is to hand over his last letter to his lover.

As the film unfolds, we learn important bits and pieces of information about Ram and Sita. It comes in fragments, as it is a story that is narrated to Afreen by different people who had known Ram and Sita in the past. She learns about a person who proves every belief of hers about Indian wrong. She learns about a woman who gave it all for her love. The idea is interesting. To introduce hate first, and then reveal things that which would destroy hate from within — love, hope, dreams and more. So in that vein, Ram’s life symbolises the hopes and dreams of many who want a world absent of hatred.

Now, the problem arises for me personally when this very symbol of hope that the film took hours to built is destroyed within minutes. From the first letters that arrived from Sita (voiced to perfection by Chinmayi), to the last letter that Ram had penned for her, just this back and forth induces old world nostalgia. It also underlines how desperate humans were for contact in absence of all the communication devices that the world has today. The closure that Ram seeks with his last letter, the one that Sita seeks every year when she visits Kashmir in his absence, is a treasure trove that could have been explored further. Maybe then, a sad ending would be befitting of this film that aims to be a classic love story.

Otherwise, I beg to differ. Do all classic love stories need to have a sad ending? I understand that they illicit emotions that are more intense, but where do we gather hope from? If the film had not thrown in certain elements, like the reds and blues, or the interfaith element, maybe I could’ve bought their fate. However, it is almost as if the film baits the audience into a false sense of security before it bursts their bubble. Beyond the film’s visuals, what really strikes a chord is the music by Vishal Chandrasekhar. It is sweet and charming, just like the film which stops short of being a classic.

But at a time when the world thrives on mega-action films with gore, blood and violence (not that I don’t love it), it is nice to see a romance drama. A well-made one at that, which also fleshes out its female lead as more than a skeletal being. Sita has layers, and she is a mystery. One that Ram doesn’t intend to solve, but only to enjoy. He has no intentions of changing her, her life or her choice. Sita’s one worry is that her secret remains unshared with Ram. However, with his last letter, Ram gives Sita the closure that two decades of living without him couldn’t. So, if sweet moments, and heartwarming hugs resulting in a heart break is not your cup of tea, give Sita Ramam a miss. Not everyone enjoys being a blubbering mess at the end of a film, after all.

Also, Mrunal Thakur , who makes her debut in Telugu with Sita Ramam, has given a great performance. That in combination with Chinmayi’s voice do add wonders. Dulquer and Rashmika play their part convincingly. The best scene in the film is the moment where Ram clicks a picture of Sita in his friend’s home. He is reflected in the camera, while she is the object of his attention. In the end, I wondered if this snapshot was foreshadowing the end. Ram as only a reflection in Sita’s life.

Hanu Raghavapudi’s Sita Ramam , a beautiful modern-day reimagining of the classic Ram-Sita story, is the kind of film that can even make those who aren’t a fan of love stories have a change of heart. With its breathtaking visuals, soulful music and a moving story of love set against the brewing tension between Indian and Pakistan in the 1960s, Sita Ramam has its heart in the right place and conveys its message about love and humanity over war quite effectively. The year is 1964. Our story opens in Kashmir with Pakistan setting its sights on Kashmir. Insurgents have already made plans to infiltrate. As the tension between India and Pakistan continues to brew, we are introduced to Lieutenant Ram ( Dulquer Salmaan ), who is a national hero having recently saved the lives of many Kashmir Muslims. As he reveals in an interview to All India Radio that he has no family ties, people from all over the country write letters to Ram. Overnight, he goes from being an orphan to someone with a big family spread across the country.

One such letter comes from a person called Sita, who writes without revealing her address. We see how Ram falls in love with Sita and sets out on a journey to find her when he spots a clue in one of her letters. The story jumps 20 years as we see Afreen ( Rashmika Mandanna ), who is trying to find Sita to hand over a letter Ram had written for her. As Afreen sets out to find the whereabouts of Sita, she learns about the love story and Ram and Sita through some people who were very close to them. What happened to Ram and Sita and why they haven’t been in touch for 20 years forms the rest of the story.

If Ramayana was about the search for Sita after she was taken captive by Raavan, this modern-day story of Ram and Sita is about the search for Ram. As much as this is a love story at heart, there’s an underlying element of mystery that’s very well maintained throughout the film. It is effectively unraveled in the end. This is not a straightforward love story but one that tries to convey its message about choosing humanity over religion, boundaries and countries very convincingly, without ever going overboard. The film and the writing need to be lauded in the way the India-Pakistan conflict has been handled with sensitivity. It’s one of the more mature representations of the tension that has ensued between the countries for decades.

The lead performances play a very key role in making the audiences root for the characters of Dulquer and Mrunal Thakur . As the film reaches the end, you’re eager to know what happened to Ram. Both Dulquer and Murnal are terrific in their respective roles and the chemistry they share really makes scenes between them feel so alive on screen. Rashmika plays a very interesting character and she isn’t your quintessential heroine. It’s a character that goes through a transformation which is well brought out by her performance.

The musical score by Vishal Chandrasekhar is the soul of the film and if not for the great tracks, this would’ve been a lifeless tale of love. The visuals make Sita Ramam a big screen spectacle and one that lives up to the hype in every frame.

Sita Ramam Movie Review: This Dulquer Salmaan, Mrunal Thakur starrer presents outstanding plot turns

In the mid-1960s or thereabouts, Lieutenant Ram (Dulquer) fell in love with a stranger (Mrunal Thakur as Sita Mahalakshmi) after trading letters with her in the film Sita Ramam.

It has been more than a decade since love stories churned out by Telugu cinema have become eventless. Most of the time, plot turns are shallow and when there is a tragedy, it looks borrowed or forced. For a change, 'Sita Ramam' jettisons run-of-the-mill ideas to narrate a meaty story packed with rich emotions, flavourful execution, and haunting ideas. Even when it presents melodrama, it doesn't cry for attention.

In the mid-1960s or thereabouts, Lieutenant Ram (Dulquer) fell in love with a stranger (Mrunal Thakur as Sita Mahalakshmi) after trading letters with her. Twenty years later, the love story of Ram and Sita has been through a chequered journey full of twists and turns. Afreen (Rashmika Mandanna) is in search of Sita and she figures out that she has to first trace Ram. In the process, she learns about Ram's edgy story which is a pack of unexpected incidents.

The fusion of suspense and jaw-dropping execution is something this film excels at. Vishal Chandrasekhar's background score is lilting and intense, as the case may be. The songs (right from those tuned to montages and chartbusters like 'Inthandham' and 'Oh Sita Hey Rama') acquire noble contexts of their own. Their placement is never out of the place. The cinematography by the PS Vinod-Shreyaas Krishna duo is spell-binding, matching the standards of first-rate Bollywood films. 

For a period drama, 'Sita Ramam' does look a tad too colourful at times. But the multitude of emotions, the air of whimsicality, and the ensemble cast lend the whole film a glorious aura. Some of the combination scenes between the different characters are written to elicit feelings of gloom. 

Mrunal Thakur's is one of the loveliest performances by a female lead in recent times and there are no two ways about it. Her expressive eyes, her charming smile, and her graceful looks make her layered character look utterly believable. Dulquer Salmaan's classy performance makes this love story an affair to remember. The chemistry between the lead pair is so pure and pristine that anything less than extraordinary music and cinematography would have been greatly disappointing. 

Rashmika Mandanna adds a layer of suspense to the script with her performance. Sumanth's Brigadier Vishnu Sharma and Jisshu Sengupta's character are neat. Shatru is good as Ram's fellow soldier, while Sachin Khedekar, Gautham Menon, Prakash Raj, Vennela Kishore and Tharun Bhascker are fine. 

Indo-Pak conflict with Kashmir as the centre stage is a trope this film uses to give unusual situations and rousing moments. The action scenes are more about the underlying emotions rather than stunts.
