He was well aware of the poor and dirty condition of the country that’s why he made various efforts to complete his dream however could not be successful.

Unfortunately, India is still lagging behind in cleanliness and sanitation even after 77 years of independence. Gramin Swachh Bharat Mission

Gramin Swachh Bharat Mission is a mission implementing cleanliness programmes in the rural areas. Earlier the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (also called Total Sanitation campaign, TSC) was established by the Government of India in 1999 to make rural areas clean however now it has been restructured into the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin).

This campaign was aimed to make rural areas free from open defecation till 2019 for which the estimated cost was one lakh thirty four thousand crore rupees for constructing approximately 11 crore 11 lakh toilets in the country. It planned converting waste into bio-fertilizer and useful energy forms. This mission involved the participation of gram panchayat, panchayat samiti and Zila Parishad. Following are the objectives of Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin):

Swachh Bharat – Swachh Vidyalaya Campaign

The Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya campaign run by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development had aimed for cleanliness in the schools. A major programme was organized under it from 25th of September 2014 to 31st of October 2014 in the Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalya Sangathans.

Lots of cleanliness activities were held such as discussions over various cleanliness aspects in the school assembly by the students, teachings of Mahatma Gandhi related to cleanliness, cleanliness and hygiene topics, cleaning activities (in the class rooms, libraries, laboratories, kitchen sheds stores, playgrounds, gardens, toilets, pantry areas, etc).

The cleaning of statue in the school area, speech over the contribution of great people, essay writing competitions, debates, art, painting, film, shows, role plays related to hygiene including other many activities on cleanliness and hygiene were also conducted. It was also planned to hold a half an hour cleaning campaign in the schools twice a week involving the cleanliness activities by the teachers, students, parents and community members.

Swachh Bharat Cess

Swachh Bharat cess is an improvement in the service tax by 0.5% on all the services in India. It was started by the Finance Ministry to collect some fund from each and every Indian citizen for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in order to make it a huge success. Everyone has to pay extra 50 paise for each 100 rupees spent as service tax for this cleanliness campaign.

Another Cleanliness Initiative in Uttar Pradesh

Yogi Adityanath (Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh), in March 2017, has banned chewing of paan, paan masala, gutka and other tobacco products (especially in the duty hours) in the government offices to ensure cleanliness. He started this initiative after his first visit to the secretariat annex building when he saw betel-juice stained walls and corners in that building.

We can say Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, is a nice welcome step to keep India clean and green. As we all heard about the most famous proverb that “Cleanliness is Next to Godliness”, we can surely say that Clean India Campaign (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan) will really bring godliness all over the country in few years if it is followed by the people of India in an effective manner.

So, the cleanliness activities to warm welcome the godliness have been started but it should not need to be ended if we really want godliness in our lives forever.

500 Words Essay On Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

The Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), also known as the Clean India Mission or Swachh Bharat Abhiyan , is a countrywide project the Indian government initiated in 2014 to eradicate open defecation and improve solid waste management. It is an enhanced version of the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, an effort launched in 2009 by Manmohan Singh's successor that was unsuccessful in achieving its objectives.

The Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0

The Finance Ministry announced in February 2021 that the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0 would be implemented under the "Health and Wellbeing" component. The SBM-U phase II will include new sewage treatment, including poor sewage management, in all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) with fewer than 1 lakh residents.

The Swachh Bharat Mission's first phase was completed in October 2019. Phase 2 is being completed between 2020–2021 and 2024–2025 to assist in the consolidation of Phase 1's activities. The government allocated Rs 1,41,678 crores to the Swachh Bharat Mission (U) 2.0 in the Union Budget 2021. Here are the components of SBM-Urban 2.0:

Waste Management – Solid

Building capacity, information, education, and communication

All ULBs under 1 lakh occupants now include wastewater treatment, including fecal sludge management.

Environmental sanitation (construction of toilets)

Urban Swachh Bharat Mission 1.0

All 4041 statutory towns with a population of 377 million were required to provide home toilets and sanitary amenities as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), which is administered by the Ministry of Urban Development. A five-year budget of Rs 62,009 crore was anticipated, of which Rs 14,623 crore was to come from the centre. The Mission intended to supply 1.04 crore families with 2.5 lakh local and 2.6 lakh public restroom seats. Additionally, it suggested building solid waste management facilities in each community. Six key elements make up this mission:

Separate toilets for each home;

Public restrooms

Management of Municipal Solid Waste,

Community restrooms

Information and Education Communication (IEC) Awareness

Capacity Building

Swachh Bharat Essay - Why There is a Need For Swachh Bharat Abhiyan?

A Swachh Bharat Abhiyan-style campaign to promote cleanliness is desperately needed in India to combat filth and insanitation. Citizens' development depends on the program in terms of their general health and well-being. Typically, there needs to be more restrooms for residents in rural locations. To excrete, residents went outside to the streets or fields. This caused several sanitary issues for people. Therefore, the Clean India Mission can significantly aid in improving these people's quality of life.

Plan For Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation established the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan action plan. By 2019, it had intended to increase the number of sanitary facilities. Making India ODF (Open Defecation Free) is the primary adjustment that needs to be made.

Highlights of the action plan:

By 2019, increase the growth rate of toilets from 3% to 10%.

Schoolchildren are participating in education campaigns about water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Toilet construction has risen from 14,000 to 48,000 every day.

Launch of a National/State-Level Media Campaign to Spread Awareness Using Audio-Visual, Mobile Telephony, and Local Programs.

Main Objectives of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

The primary goal with which the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan initiative was started was to eliminate open defecation in India. The motive was also to raise awareness of the issues caused by solid and liquid wastes when waste management is not done properly. The Swachh Bharat Mission sought to clean up the nation's streets, buses, offices, and drainage systems. Making the nation's residents aware of their paramount obligation to maintain cleanliness and stop pollution from spreading throughout the nation is another goal of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is an initiative by the Indian government that aims to solve open defecation and waste management issues, as well as the general goal of general cleanliness, as these issues hinder the nation's progress.

The primary objectives of this programme are:

The abolition of open defecation.

The conversion of unhygienic restrooms.

Manual waste collection.

Complete waste disposal.

Waste reuse.

Benefits of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

The success of India's economy is inextricably linked to the Clean India movement. The accomplishment of this mission would, among other things, indirectly attract business investors to India, boost GDP growth, attract tourists from all over the world, bring about a variety of employment opportunities, lower health costs, lower death rates, lower lethal disease rates, and much more. Clean India would attract more tourists and improve the country's economic situation.

The campaign had numerous successful outcomes. Swachh Bharat Run, Swachh Bharat apps, Real-time monitoring system, Swachh Bharat short film, and Swachh Bharat Nepal - Swasth Bharat Nepal Abhiyan are just a few of the initiatives that were started and put into action to actively support the mission's goals.

The Finance Ministry of India launched the Swachh Bharat Cess programme, which requires everyone to pay 0.5% tax on all services in India (i.e., 50 paise for every 100 rupees), in order to sustain and make this campaign successful.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a nationwide cleanliness campaign run by the Government of India and initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2nd October 2014, on the 145th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

This campaign has been launched to fulfill the aim of cleanliness all over India. The Prime Minister has requested the people of India to involve in the Swachh Bharat Mission and promote others to do the same to lead our country as the best and clean country in the world. This campaign was initiated by Narendra Modi himself by cleaning the road on the way going to launch the campaign.

What is Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

The campaign of Swachh Bharat is the biggest ever cleanliness drive in India, during the launch of which around 3 million government employees and students from schools and colleges participated.

On the day of launch, Prime Minister nominated the names of nine famous personalities of India to initiate the campaign in their areas at their decided dates and promote the campaign to the common public. He also requested all nine personalities to invite nine other people from their end to participate in this event individually and to continue this chain of inviting nine people until the message reaches every Indian citizen.

How it is Observed

People across the nation clean their locality and pledge to keep their surroundings clean and green. Prime Minister requested that every Indian take this campaign as a challenge and try their best to make it a successful campaign ever. The chain of nine people is like a branching of a tree. He requested common people to involve in this event and upload videos or images of cleanliness over the internet via various social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, etc., so that others can also get motivated to do the same in their area. In this way, India can be a clean country.

Pollution Essay

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Essay 400 words

The father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, had once said that “Sanitation is more important than Independence” during his time before the independence of India. He was well aware of the bad and unclean situation of India. He greatly emphasized cleanliness and sanitation to the people of India and their implementation in their daily lives. However, it was not so effective and was unsuccessful because of the incomplete participation of people. After so many years of independence, a most effective clean-up campaign is launched to call people for active participation and complete the cleanliness mission.

Launch of Swachh Bharat Campaign

The Former President of India, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, said in June 2014, while addressing the Parliament, “For ensuring hygiene, waste management, and sanitation across the nation, a Swachh Bharat Mission will be launched. This will be our tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary in 2019”. To fulfill the vision of Mahatma Gandhi and make India an ideal country in the world, the Prime Minister of India initiated a campaign called Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi (2nd October 2014). This campaign aims to complete the Mission by 2019, i.e., the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Importance of Swachh Bharat Campaign

Through this campaign, the Government of India solves the sanitation problems by enhancing waste management techniques. The clean India movement is completely associated with the country’s economic strength. The birth date of Mahatma Gandhi is targeted in both the launch and the completion of the Mission.

The basic goals behind launching the Swachh Bharat Mission are to make the country full of sanitation facilities and eliminate all people’s unhealthy practices in daily routines. The first cleanliness drive in India was started on 25th September 2014 and was initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi by cleaning up the road.

Benefits of the Swachh Bharat Campaign

The completion of this Mission would indirectly draw the attention of business investors in India, enhance the GDP growth, draw tourists’ attention from all over the world, bring a variety of sources of employment, reduce health costs, reduce the death rate, and reduce lethal disease rate and many more. Clean India would bring more tourists and enhance its economic condition. The Prime Minister of India has requested that every Indian devote 100 hours per year to cleanliness in India, which is sufficient to make this country clean by 2019. Swachh Bharat cess is also started to get some funds for this campaign. Everyone has to pay an extra 0.5% tax (50 paise per 100 rupees) on all the services in India.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath also started a cleanliness drive in 2017 in Uttar Pradesh to ensure cleanliness in the official buildings. He has banned eating paan, gutka, and other tobacco products in government offices.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is one of the most important initiatives taken by the Government to make India shine in the world. But what it requires the most is the active participation of every individual irrespective of caste, creed, or religion. If we want our country to be respected and revered in the world, we should devote ourselves to this campaign by contributing to the cause and spreading awareness of the Swachh Bharat Mission. Then only the dream of Mahatma Gandhi could be achieved in a real sense.

It is the biggest cleanliness drive ever in India, where approximately 3 million government employees, including students from schools and colleges, took part in the cleanliness activities.

On the day of the event launch, PM nominated nine people to participate in the cleanliness drive in their areas. Schools and colleges participated in the event by organizing many cleanliness activities according to their themes. Students of India participated in this event with full zeal and zest.

PM also requested all those nine nominees to nominate another nine people separately to participate in this cleanliness drive. The aim is to continue the chain of nominating nine people by every participating candidate for the Mission until the message reaches every Indian in every corner of the country to make it a national mission.

Objectives of Swachh Bharat Mission

The Mission aims to connect every individual from all walks of life by making the structure of branching of a tree. Swachh Bharat mission aims to construct individual sanitary latrines for household purposes, especially for the people living below the poverty line, convert dry latrines into low-cost sanitary latrines, providing facility of hand pumps, safe and secure bathing facilities, set up sanitary marts, construct drains, proper disposal of solid and liquid wastes, enhancing health and education awareness, providing household and environmental sanitation facilities and many more.

Earlier, many awareness programs (such as the Total Sanitation Campaign, Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, etc.) about environmental sanitation and personal cleanliness were launched by the Indian Government; however, they were not very effective in making India a clean India.

The major objectives of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan are removing the trend of open defecation, changing insanitary toilets into pour flush toilets, removal of manual scavenging, proper disposal of solid and liquid wastes, bringing behavioral changes among people, enhancing awareness about sanitation, facilitating the participation of private sectors towards cleanliness facilities.

People Nominated for the Swachh Bharat Campaign

The first nine nominated people by the Prime Minister for this campaign were Salman Khan, Anil Ambani, Kamal Hassan, comedian Kapil Sharma, Priyanka Chopra, Baba Ramdev, Sachin Tendulkar, Shashi Tharoor, and a team of ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’ (a most famous TV series). Indian film actor Aamir Khan was invited to the launch of the Mission. The PM chose various brand ambassadors to initiate and promote the campaign of Swachh Bharat in various fields.

He also nominated some other dignitaries like Akhilesh Yadav, Swami Rambhadracharya, Mohammad Kaif, Manoj Tiwari, Deviprasad Dwivedi, Manu Sharma, Kailash Kher, Raju Srivastava, Suresh Raina, etc. on 8th November in 2014 and Sourav Ganguly, Kiran Bedi, Padmanabha Acharya, Sonal Mansingh, Ramoji Rao, etc. on 25th December in 2014.

Effects of Swachh Bharat Mission

There were many positive results of the campaign. Many other programs like Swachh Bharat Run, Swachh Bharat apps, Real-time monitoring system, Swachh Bharat short film, and Swachh Bharat Nepal – Swasth Bharat Nepal Abhiyan were initiated and implemented to support the purpose of the Mission actively.

To ensure cleanliness in the official buildings of UP, chewing of paan, gutka, and other tobacco products was banned entirely by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. To continue and make this campaign successful, the Finance Ministry of India has started a program named Swachh Bharat cess, according to which everyone has to pay 0.5% tax on all the services in India (i.e., 50 paise per 100 rupees), which will fund this cleanliness campaign.

‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ or the ‘Clean India Mission’ should not only be the Government or the ministries; it is the responsibility of every citizen residing in the country. Achieving the goal of a clean India will never be possible until and unless we collaborate and join hands to clean our surroundings and stop others from making them dirty.

The participation and involvement of people in this campaign were huge. Also, they started showing positive results in recent times, but the most important thing is the continuation of this process. Let us pledge to continue doing our bit to make our surroundings and environment clean and green and make our country respected in the world.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Essay in 1400 words

The Government starts Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to make India an immaculate India. Clean India was a dream seen by Mahatma Gandhi, who once said, “Sanitation is more important than Independence.” During his time, he was well aware of the poor and dirty conditions of the country; that’s why he made various efforts to complete his dream; however, he could not succeed.

As he dreamt of a clean India one day, he said that cleanliness and sanitation are integral parts of healthy and peaceful living. Unfortunately, India is still lagging in cleanliness and sanitation even after 71 years of independence. According to the statistics, it has been seen that a very less percentage of the total population has access to toilets. It is a program run by the Government to seriously work to fulfill the vision of Father of Nation (Bapu) by calling people from all walks of life to make it a successful campaign globally.

This Mission has to be completed by the 150th birth anniversary of Bapu (i.e., 2nd October of 2019) in the next five years (from the launch date). It is urged by the Government to spend at least 100 hours a year on cleanliness in their surrounding areas or other places of India to make it a successful campaign. There are various implementation policies and mechanisms for the program, including three important phases the planning phase, the implementation phase, and the sustainability phase.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a national cleanliness campaign established by the Government of India. This campaign covers 4041 statutory towns to clean India’s roads, streets, and infrastructure. It is a mass movement to create a Clean India by 2019. It is a step ahead of Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of swachh Bharat for a healthy and prosperous life.

This Mission was launched on 2nd October 2014 (the 145th birth anniversary of Bapu) by targeting its completeness in 2019 on the 150th birth anniversary of Bapu. The Mission has been implemented to cover all the rural and urban areas of India under the Ministry of Urban Development and the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation accordingly.

The first cleanliness drive (on 25th September 2014) of this Mission was started by the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, before its launch. This Mission has targeted solving the sanitation problems and better waste management all over India by creating sanitation facilities for all.

Need for Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

Swachh Bharat’s Mission must run continuously in India until it achieves its goal. India’s people need physical, mental, social, and intellectual well-being. It is to advance the living status in India in real means, which can be started by bringing all over cleanliness. Below I have mentioned some points proving the urgent need for ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ in India:

  • It is essential to eliminate open defecation in India and make toilets available to everyone.
  • It is needed in India to convert the insanitary toilets into flushing toilets.
  • It is necessary to eradicate the manual scavenging system.
  • It is to implement the proper waste management through the scientific processes, hygienic disposal, reuse, and recycling of the municipal solid wastes.
  • It brings behavioral changes among Indian people regarding maintaining personal hygiene and practicing healthy sanitation.
  • It creates global awareness among the common masses living in rural areas and links it to public health.
  • It supports working bodies to design, execute and operate the waste disposal systems locally.
  • It is to bring private-sector participation to develop sanitary facilities throughout India.
  • It is to make India a clean and green India.
  • Improving the quality of life of people in rural areas is necessary.
  • It is to bring sustainable sanitation practices by motivating communities and Panchayati Raj Institutions through the awareness programs like health education.
  • It is to bring the dream of Bapu come true.

Swachh Bharat Mission in Urban Areas

The Swachh Bharat Mission of urban areas aims to cover almost 1.04 crore households to provide them with 2.6 lakhs of public toilets and 2.5 lakhs community toilets and solid waste management in every town. Community toilets have been planned to be built in the residential areas where the availability of individual household toilets is difficult and public toilets at designated locations including bus stations, tourist places, railway stations, markets, etc.

Cleanliness programs in the urban areas (around 4,401 towns) have been planned to be completed over five years till 2019. The costs of programs are set at Rs. 7,366 crores for solid waste management, Rs. 1,828 crores for public awareness, Rs. 655 crores for community toilets, and Rs. 4,165 crores for individual household toilets, etc.

Programs targeted to remove open defecation, convert unsanitary toilets into flush toilets, eradicating manual scavenging, bring behavioral changes among the public, and solid waste management.

Gramin Swachh Bharat Mission

Gramin Swachh Bharat Mission is a mission implementing cleanliness programs in rural areas. Earlier, the Government of India established the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (also called Total Sanitation campaign, TSC) in 1999 to make rural areas clean; however, now it has been restructured into the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin).

This campaign aims to free rural areas from open defecation until 2019. The estimated cost is one lakh thirty four thousand crore rupees for constructing approximately 11 crores and 11 lakh toilets in the country. There is a big plan to convert waste into bio-fertilizer and useful energy forms. This Mission involves the participation of gram panchayat, panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad. Following are the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin):

  • To improve the quality of life of people living in the rural areas.
  • Motivate people to maintain sanitation in rural areas to complete the vision of Swachh Bharat by 2019.
  • To motivate local working bodies (such as communities, Panchayati Raj Institutions, etc.) to make available the required sustainable sanitation facilities.
  • Develop advanced environmental sanitation systems manageable by the community, especially to focus on solid and liquid waste management in rural areas.
  • To promote ecologically safe and sustainable sanitation in rural areas.

Swachh Bharat-Swachh Vidyalaya Campaign

The Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya campaign is run by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development having the objective of cleanliness in the schools. A major program was organized under it from 25th September 2014 to 31st October 2014 in the Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalya Sangathan.

Lots of cleanliness activities were held, such as discussions over various cleanliness aspects in the school assembly by the students, teachings of Mahatma Gandhi related to cleanliness, cleanliness and hygiene topics, cleaning activities (in the classrooms, libraries, laboratories, kitchen sheds, stores, playgrounds, gardens, toilets, pantry areas, etc.).

The cleaning of statues in the school area, speech about the contribution of great people, essay writing competitions, debates, art, painting, film, shows, role plays related to hygiene including other many activities on cleanliness and hygiene were also conducted. It was also planned to hold a half an hour cleaning campaign in the schools twice a week involving cleanliness activities by the teachers, students, parents, and community members.

Swachh Bharat Cess

Swachh Bharat cess is an improvement in the service tax by 0.5% on all the services in India. The Finance Ministry started it to collect some funds from every Indian citizen for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to make it a huge success. Everyone has to pay extra 50 paise for every 100 rupees spent as service tax for this cleanliness campaign.

Another Cleanliness Initiative in Uttar Pradesh

Yogi Adityanath (Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh), in March 2017, banned the chewing of paan, paan masala, gutka, and other tobacco products (especially during duty hours) in government offices to ensure cleanliness. He started this initiative after his first visit to the secretariat annex building when he saw betel-juice-stained walls and corners in that building.

We can say Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a nice welcome step to make India clean and green by 2019. As we all heard about the most famous proverb, “Cleanliness is Next to Godliness, “we can surely say that the Clean India Campaign (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan) will bring godliness all over the country for years if the people of India follow it effectively.

So, the cleanliness activities to warm welcome godliness have been started, but they should not need to be ended if we want godliness in our lives forever. A healthy country and society need its citizens to be healthy and clean in every walk of life.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness Essay

Introduction

Cleanliness is next to godliness – we all have read this quote. Our Bapu, Mahatma Gandhi, was particularly interested in banishing, along with the British, all the dirt and impurities that plagued our nation and its citizens. He had known since then that cleanliness leads to a healthy body and mind.

Inspired by Bapu’s vision, on 2 October 2014, the Indian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, made it a mission to make India clean by 2019 by eradicating open defecation, improving solid waste management, and making the citizens aware of the importance of cleanliness. The name of this mission was Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or Clean India Movement.

Objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission

A primary goal of the campaign is to eliminate the practice of open defecation and provide basic sanitation facilities by providing toilets, solid–liquid waste disposal systems, clean drinking water, etc. It aims to clean streets, roads, towns, and infrastructure in 4041 statutory towns and cities across the country. According to UNICEF, a single gram of faeces can host millions of viruses and parasites. These viruses and parasites are the reason that every year one lakh children die of diarrhoea.

While making India open defecation-free by 2014 was the main aim of the mission, it also aimed at making people more aware of the problems created by solid and liquid wastes when garbage management is not done properly. The Swachh Bharat Mission aimed to make rivers, drainage system, buses, offices, and streets cleaner.

It is also among the objectives of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to make the citizens of the country aware of their utmost responsibility to maintain cleanliness and prevent filth from spreading around the country.

The Launch of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is not something that happened overnight. India is a big country and improving it requires meticulous planning. Before the Swachh Bharat Mission, the previous two cleanliness missions in India paved the path for the most successful cleanliness drive of 2014–2019.

The campaign was conceived in a conference organised by UNICEF and the Indian Institute of Technology in March 2014. Later that year, on the birthday of the father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhi, the Swachh Bharat Mission was flagged off. It was a daunting project that required the construction of 90 million toilets across the country. The seriousness of the mission can be judged when we see that the government earmarked 1.96 crore rupees for the project.

The Prime Minister also nominated nine public figures to spread the word, including Sachin Tendulkar, Priyanka Chopra, Salman Khan, Baba Ramdev, Shashi Tharoor, Kamal Hassan, Anil Ambani, Mridula Sinha, and the entire cast of the famous television series Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashmah. Nine people had to be further nominated in order to form a chain system.

Clean Schools

Side by side with the main Swachh Bharat Mission, the Indian government also launched the Clean India: Clean Schools Campaign. The campaign aimed to ensure separate toilets for boys and girls in schools, appropriate sanitary facilities for menstruating students, a handwashing station that can cater to at least 10 students at the same time, availability of soaps, etc.

The Challenges

Although the Swachh Bharat Mission has achieved phenomenal success, certain things still need to be done. The Indian government did a great job by building lakhs of toilets. However, the need of the hour is to change the mentality of the Indians. Despite having toilets in homes, many find it beneficial to defecate in the open. They do not want to ‘spoil’ their supposed sanctity of the homes by defecating inside the house in the toilet. These people need to remember that the outer world is nothing but the extension of their homes. The Earth is their home. The people must keep the planet clean.

Step Towards a Better Tomorrow

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is an ambitious project. When other countries are aiming at the Moon and Mars without improving the lives of the people, the Indian government has taken a people-first approach. Along with the Clean India campaign, it is also necessary to make our hearts cleaner. We must respect each other, we must respect women, and we must not attack each other in the name of religion or caste. Only after that, we can say – we are clean physically as well as spiritually.

This mission is not about any political agenda, said PM Modi, but rather to awaken a spirit of patriotism among the people. Teamwork is vital, and people need to devote 100 hours a year to the mission since it can't be achieved by one person or by the government alone. Every Indian citizen is responsible for keeping India clean and green.

As a result of the mission, death and lethal diseases rates in rural areas were reduced and households in rural areas received an annual benefit of Rs. 50,000. With an increase in employment opportunities, Clean India attracted many tourists from all over the world, thereby enhancing the nation's GDP and economy.

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, a truly unique project in the history of India, is a great accomplishment for our nation. As we continue to do our part to keep India clean and beautiful, we must do so with zeal and enthusiasm.

FAQs on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Essay

1. Is the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan still going on?

The movement aimed to make India a cleaner country, and it is still in action. States around the country contribute to this movement in different ways. Controlling solid waste and liquid waste is one of the best techniques to head-start the process of cleaning an entire country.

Under this mission, the government has now introduced loans to help build toilets. For cleaning public places and making sure they stay clean, the government has introduced dustbins. Thus, the mission is not of a few years but is rather a vision aiming to have a country that is clean and stays clean.

2. Why is cleanliness important?

Cleanliness is important when it comes to maintaining good health. Hygiene plays a big role in keeping good physical health as well as mental health. Liquid waste, when kept around for long, becomes a breeding ground for pathological microorganisms. There is a very good saying – ‘Cleanliness is next to godliness’ which describes its importance very well. Cleanliness also helps in concentration; when your surrounding is clean, you will have a peaceful mind and will be able to concentrate better.

The primary objective of this initiative is to ensure cleanliness in every corner of the country by eliminating open defecation and improving waste management practices.

The Genesis of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was launched on October 2, 2014, on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who was a staunch advocate for cleanliness. To achieve these objectives, the government has implemented various strategies. The campaign also focuses on providing assistance to different states in India to create Waste Management Infrastructure.

Moreover, waste management, particularly in urban areas, remains a significant issue that needs to be addressed.

The future of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan lies in overcoming these challenges and ensuring that the momentum of the campaign does not falter. The government and citizens must work hand-in-hand to ensure the success of this mission.
