Resident Evil 4: Separate Ways review - slick Ada Wong steals the show

Resident Evil 4: Separate Ways review - slick Ada Wong steals the show

Resident evil 4: separate ways is available now. here's our review.

Richard Lee Breslin

Resident Evil 4 remake is a prime example of how a remake should be done. This should come as no surprise when you consider that Capcom has already given us at least two fantastic remakes of this iconic series, such as Resident Evil 2 (2019) and Resident Evil 4 (2023) both of which had taken what we loved from the original games, but perfectly balanced new and familiar.

Yet, if there were a couple of common complaints with the Resident Evil 4 remake , it would be that some locations and enemies were cut from the main campaign. Additionally, the remake never included either Assignment Ada ( the other bonus campaign from OG RE4 ) or Separate Ways . Thankfully, the modern version of Separate Ways addresses all those concerns in a single shot by combining cut content from the base game as well as Assignment Ada and Separate Ways with an added cherry on top.

Check out the Resident Evil 4: Separate Ways trailer below!

Separate Ways in 2023 is largely different to the one that we would have played in 2005 post- Nintendo GameCube. The original version of Separate Ways was basically Ada revisiting locations that we had previously seen when playing as Leon, heck, it even used much of the same cut-scenes. Yet in the 2023 version, we not only get to visit new locations (which I’ll keep spoiler-free), but we even get new and returning enemies, as well as areas that were seemingly cut from the remake, and we get some new weapons. Another aspect that sets the 2023 version apart from the original, is that Ada is now visited by the lovable merchant complete with weapon upgrades, side-quests and more.

Ada also has a new ability that makes so much sense, that I’ll never know why it was never included in the original Separate Ways . Fans of the Resident Evil series will be aware that Ada loves a grappling hook and until now, players have only used this device to traverse the environment, however, the grappling hook can now be used as a weapon to attack stunned enemies from a distance. What’s more, as long as you unlock a certain perk, the grappling hook can even be used to pull shields away from Ganados. Ada even has cybernetic enhancements that give her a Batman -inspired investigative vision to look for clues or as Capcom calls it ‘I.R.I.S (Interactive Retina Inquiry System)’.

Capcom

The story of 2023’s Separate Ways adds extra depth with its multilayered tale of Ada and Leon, and even the charismatic Luis Serra Navarro gets some much-needed love. Fans of the original Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 will also have their nostalgic senses tingling with how Capcom implements tracks from the original games which will no doubt give some fans goosebumps.

I wouldn't normally be one to include the price of a video game or DLC in a review, but Separate Ways is an exception to that rule with its incredibly modest price of just £7.99/$9.99 USD. On my first playthrough, I spent over seven hours with this DLC. Furthermore, just like the main game, Separate Ways has a New Game Plus, additional difficulty settings and plenty of unlockables to acquire. This is without question one of the best value pieces of DLC that I’ve ever experienced. If Capcom had charged double its price, it would still have represented great value for money.

Capcom

Separate Ways expands upon what was already a great product with the Resident Evil 4 remake, but it also introduces new features into the series that I hope will be carried over into new entries. Resident Evil 4 is already a must-own game for fans of survival horror and now that this version of Separate Ways has entered the fray, it’s elevated the remake to new heights. Oh, and I think it’s time for Ada Wong to have her own fully-fledged game.

Pros: Separate Ways (2023) not only expands upon the original campaign but also the Resident Evil 4 remake, offers incredible value for money

Cons: The campaign has to end at some point

For fans of: Resident Evil

9/10: Exceptional

Resident Evil 4 VR Doesn't Have Separate Ways Or Mercenaries

You can play as Leon Kennedy but not Ada Wong in Resident Evil 4 VR.

Resident Evil 4 VR launches tomorrow , taking the classic, revolutionary 2000s shooter into uncharted territory . It's been ported a hefty amount of times now but never overhauled for a new medium entirely. However, in the transition, it has lost Mercenaries and Separate Ways , two of the unlockable extra modes.

Speaking to IGN, the spokesperson revealing the news didn't divulge why the modes were omitted, only that they won't be making an appearance. For context, The Mercenaries was unlocked by completing the Resident Evil 4 on any difficulty - the idea is that you kill as many baddies as possible in as quick a time as you can. Normal enemies award 300 points and bosses award several thousand - in essence, it's an arcade minigame.

RELATED: From Resident Evil To Dead Space: The History Of Survival Horror

Meanwhile, Separate Ways is a story expansion that's also unlocked by beating the main campaign. You play as Ada Wong during the events of the main story, following Albert Wesker's orders to ring the church bell. You then rescue Luis Sera, retrieve the plaga sample, and stop Leon's assassination. It's a side story that runs adjacent to Resident Evil 4, explaining what Ada was up to.

Another absent extra mode is Assignment: Ada, a non-canon minigame that is - you guessed it - unlocked by beating Resident Evil 4. The plot is simple: you, playing as Ada, collect various plaga samples, and report back to Wesker.

During this segment, you report that Krauser is dead despite the main story implying his survival. It's non-canon, though, so this can be hand-waved. However, it does vaguely tease Resident Evil 5 as Wesker talks about "significant changes in our world" that are on the horizon.

While Assignment: Ada remained alongside Separate Ways in future ports, it's clear that elements of A:A inspired the story-based expansion. Nonetheless, neither are available in the VR port. You're stuck with good ol' Leon Kennedy, the emo bad boy with a mean jacket and a decent combat roll technique. Unfortunately, his fringe won't obscure half your view - talk about immersion breaking.

  • 4 Ada's Report

Separate Ways provides a look into Ada's life that was not shown in the main story. It gives you a more in depth look into why Ada was there and what she was doing. Separate Ways can be unlocked by beating the main story(any difficultly). After completion of Separate Ways you will unlock the Chicago typewriter which can be used in the main story after being purchased for 1,000,000 Pesetas.

Walkthrough [ edit ]

Enemies [ edit ].

There are a limited amount of enemies in Separate Ways. You do not have to kill any of the bigger or stronger enemies that Leon has to kill in the main game. There are only two main bosses that Ada has to go up against. I will list their names along with what they are able to wield as weapons.

  • Axe-can be thrown.
  • Torch-they can breathe fire when wielding this.
  • Butcher's Knife-used by the female ganado.
  • TNT/Dynamite/Bomb-can be thrown at you. If you shoot it, it blows up killing the enemies around it.
  • Scythe-can be thrown. Be careful; one hit is all it takes.
  • Bow-can shoot you from a distance.
  • Mace-sometimes is used with a shield.
  • TNT/Dynamite/Bomb: this can be thrown at you if you shoot it it blows up killing the enemies around it.
  • Stun Rod-shocks you when they hit.
  • Chainsaw: this is the only thing she wields and is a very strong weapon.
  • Chainsaw: this is the only thing he wields and is a very strong weapon.
  • Three long blades attached to each hand.
  • A massive machine gun-shoots a lot of bullets very fast.

Bosses [ edit ]

There are only two main bosses you have to fight as Ada.

  • His arm is his weapon. He uses it to try to cut you. When he's not attacking, he uses it to block his body, but not his whole body.
  • His body is his weapon. The las plagas have mutated him in to a monster.

Weapons [ edit ]

Here i will list Ada's weapons along with there upgrade level and a brief description. Ada's weapons can not be upgraded through out the game(A * means you start with the weapon)

1)*Black Tail -this pistol is Ada's main gun seen through out cut scenes in game.

2)*Shotgun -this is a basic shot gun is good to use if your being crowded.

3)TMP -a strong weapon it can send streams of bullets towards your enemies careful though it is easy to waste ammo.

4)Semi Automatic Rifle -great weapon if used correctly it is very strong and can shoot through shields.

5)Bow Gun -one of the strongest weapons you can use save the ammo for when you really need it.

6)Chicago Typewriter -this gun can be bought for 300,000 Pesetas after completing assignment Ada this gun is very powerful you can just keep on shooting it has infinite ammo and never has to reload.

Hilarious Skyrim Clip Shows Archer Hit Unexpected Target

Animal well: how to use circular recess, starfield's upcoming land vehicles may be too little too late.

Capcom's recent remake and virtual reality port Resident Evil 4 VR has been met with praise from fans of the original 2005 game. While some questioned the relevance of remaking a game that's over 15 years old, other players and fans of Capcom's previous VR version of another game in the franchise, Resident Evil 7 , were keen to experience the survival horror shooter through the immediacy of a headset.

Resident Evil 4 VR is not just a straightforward remake. Capcom faced some criticism and controversy before the game's release when it was rumored that it would be cutting some content from one of its most popular Resident Evil games, in addition to making the shift from a 3rd person perspective. While some of the content cut had little to no impact on the larger game, the omission of other elements such as Mercenaries Mode, Separate Ways, and Assignment Ada at the time of the game's release was felt more keenly by fans.

RELATED: Resident Evil 4 VR is Proof Other Resident Evil Games Should Get the VR Treatment

Lost In Translation

While some fans were hoping for a ground-up remake similar to Capcom's treatment of Resident Evil 2 , they will have to be satisfied with a remaster and translation to VR for the time being. Although large amounts of the game remain the same, there were still some changes in the newest port from the original fourth installment in the popular franchise. Once the game was released in 2021, players were able to see that most of the changes were simply cuts of slightly sexist and outdated dialogue and actions, particularly with regards to the characters of Ingrid and Ashley .

The main change was a welcome one, with perspective shifting from 3rd person to 1st during gameplay (other than some key instances, like when Leon delivers a knockdown move to an enemy). Putting players directly in the action through a 1st person VR perspective is always a popular mechanic for horror games, even if this proves just a little too much for some gamers. The change that left a lot of fans of the franchise disappointed was the decision to not include Mercenaries Mode, Separate Ways, or Assignment Ada. That was until Oculus confirmed that Mercenaries Mode will be added to Resident Evil 4 VR in a free update coming in 2022 – welcome news to gamers that enjoyed the popular mode and its various characters that saw them mowing down as many enemies as they could within a time limit.

Ada Missions Still MIA

With the announcement that the previously cut Mercenaries Mode will be making a reappearance, it's possible that Ada Wong 's storyline Separate Ways and minigame Assignment Ada may also have a place in Resident Evil 4 VR . Separate Ways, a story expansion in the original game that was made available to players after they completed the campaign, followed the exploits of enigmatic spy Ada concurrent to the game's main narrative. Assignment Ada also follows Ada but is a non-canon extra mode that was a little lighter on plot. Players controlled Ada as she collected Plaga samples and reported back to Wesker, providing a fun and challenging quick extra along with the other content.

The addition of the Ada-centric add ons would certainly be a plus for the overall Resident Evil 4 VR experience. Enabling gamers to play through these levels in immersive and palpitation-inducing VR would be an improvement to the original versions, and would add more content to the game for players to enjoy. Providing an additional story mode like Separate Ways would flesh out the narrative for players that may only be experiencing Resident Evil 4 for the first time in its VR iteration, and would provide a nice counterbalance to the more Leon-focused main campaign.

Resident Evil 4 VR is out now, exclusively for Oculus Quest 2.

Chapter 1: Ring the Church Bell [ ]

96356

The story begins with Ada in the village centre; after fighting off a pair of Ganados, Ada is instructed by Wesker to ring the church bell, in turn pacifying the villagers. At that time, she notices Leon having troubles of his own, ambushed by a gang of villagers. Racing to the church, Ada discovers the door locked. The round insignia needed to open it is around the back, protected by a dial puzzle. Although she solves it, something must be placed in the mechanism to keep the gate behind her open. Heading along the shore, Ada encounters one of the Chainsaw Sisters. After defeating her, Ada retrieves the Green Catseye, returns to the church and solves a puzzle to retrieve the Round Insignia, then switches it with the Green Catseye. She uses the Insignia to enter the church, then solves the light puzzle later seen with Leon to ring the church bell, although bringing down the steel bars that prevented Leon from getting to Ashley.

Chapter 2: Rescue Luis Sera [ ]

Rescue luis (re4 danskyl7)

Reading a book about the villagers in the home of Bitores Méndez , Ada gets a call from Wesker to inform her that the researcher they planted, Luis Serra , has been captured by Méndez and is being held in a house on the other side of the village. Until he obtains the control plaga sample for them, he cannot be allowed to die. Ada remarks that Serra is quite high-maintenance and sets out to rescue him.

After fighting her way through the village, including Chainsaw Man , Ada arrives at the house only to find that Leon has also been captured and that the Ganados are moving both prisoners to the valley.

Racing back, Ada arrives at the chief's house just in time to save Leon from a quick death. However, this causes Méndez to chase after her instead. Eventually, Ada is tranquilized and captured.

A few hours later, Ada wakes up just in time to avoid a grisly death at the end of a Ganado's axe during an Illuminados sacrifice. She makes her way up to the lift control room to discover that she needs a key to activate the gondola lift. She goes to the barn where, in a few hours, Leon will face off against Chief Méndez. For now though, there are only a few villagers, including a second Chainsaw Sister who is possession of the key Ada needs to advance. Defeating her opponents, Ada uses the lift and proceeds on.

However, there is one last obstacle in her way: El Gigante . Either by fighting or fleeing, Ada gets past the monster arriving just after the siege on the cabin has ended. Luis informs her that he's on his way to get the sample. He asks her who she works for and she replies that there are things he's better off not knowing. He says he doesn't really care who she is as long as she gets rid of Saddler and Los Iluminados .

Chapter 3: Retrieve the Sample [ ]

546757

The chapter begins with Ada revealing herself to Leon and escaping into the hedge maze. Wesker calls her with important news: Luis has gotten his hands on the sample. Ada is to track him down and get it from him. Additionally, if Ada encounters Leon, she's ordered to take him out. He's a survivor of Raccoon City , Wesker says, they can do without the distraction.

The sudden arrival of the cultists somewhat hampers Ada's efforts to escape the maze, but she makes it with little difficulty. Making her way through the castle, including a fight with a Garrador, Ada stumbles upon Leon and is unable to help him as she'll have to kill him if he sees her.

Eventually she arrives at the meeting point only to witness Saddler kill Luis and take back the sample. Wesker calls, telling her that they might be able to use Leon as a distraction to harass Saddler and his men. Unbeknownst to Wesker, Ada's been doing that all along.

Chapter 4: Stop Leon's Assassination [ ]

Stop leon assasination (re4 danskyl7)

Krauser and Ada meet at the island's radio tower. Afterwards, Ada gets a call from Wesker informing her that he's dispatched Krauser to kill Leon. Ada reminds herself that she doesn't always play by Wesker's rules.

Finding herself in the shipping lane from the waste disposal center, Ada goes on the offensive through hordes of soldiers, even going so far as to sink the warship that Saddler has somehow recommissioned all by herself (she even used a pair of Gatling cannons to destroy the warship's onboard artillery).

Arriving at just the right time of Leon and Krauser's knife battle, Ada shoots Krauser's knife out of his hand as he is about to stab Leon in the heart and he is forced to flee.

Chapter 5: Obtain the Sample [ ]

Obtain the sample (re4 danskyl7)

As Mike and Leon decimate the military base, Ada informs Wesker that Krauser has been killed. Impressed, Wesker remarks that Leon doesn't die easily. He plans to use Leon to take care of Saddler. No matter who wins, the victor won't emerge unscathed and he instructs Ada to finish off whoever is left. Neither Leon nor Saddler can live to see tomorrow.

Clearing out what remains of the mercenary defenses, Ada meets up with Leon just in time to witness his Plaga try to assert itself. Going on ahead to let him compose himself, she defeats the meager resistance in the cell block. But as she's about to advance, she is nearly killed by a girder.

Krauser, badly burned and injured, had survived both Leon's assault and the explosions that destroyed the ruins and he intends to pay Ada back for her earlier humiliation. However, Ada has carefully studied his fighting style and, despite his arm, she is able to overcome her old ally, killing him for good.

Vlcsnap-2012-05-16-18h30m11s55

Ada holding Leon at gunpoint for the Plaga.

Immediately after, Ada arrives in the laboratory to distract Saddler, giving Leon the precious time he needs to rescue Ashley and escape. Unfortunately, she must now fight the deranged cult leader. Through a combination of wits and firepower, she is able to defeat him and finally gets her hands on the control plaga specimen. But she does not see one of Saddler's tentacles and is captured.

A short time later, Leon arrives on top of the structure where Saddler and Ada are waiting, Ada tied and hanging from a rope. Leon cuts her down and begins to fight the mutated Saddler. Ada, seeing a rocket launcher on another structure, goes on an all-out offensive, racing against both a swarm of Ganados and the timer of a great number of bombs. But she overcomes every obstacle, retrieving the launcher and, in a parallel of the same event six years earlier, tosses it to Leon at the last moment.

Holding Leon at gunpoint, she finally retrieves the plaga sample. Tossing Leon the key to a jet-ski, she takes off in her helicopter just before the island is destroyed.

Gameplay [ ]

The player controls Ada Wong for the game. Compared to Leon, the only gameplay differences will be Ada has a slightly faster movement speed, uses different melee attacks and can use the hookshot to reach areas that were impossible for Leon. The player begins the game with the default size attache case and 5 bars of health. Ada starts with the following items:

  • Shotgun (Ada's)
  • Handgun Ammo (30)
  • Shotgun Shells (15)
  • First Aid Spray

The game is spread out over five chapters (two for the village, one for the castle, two for the island), it is considerably longer and more complex than Assignment: Ada with save points and the Weapon Merchant available to the player. However, the weapon upgrade option of the Merchant is disabled in this mode.

Completing the game and saving leaves the file at a "New Round" state and the player can restart from the beginning with all their equipment and money carried over. The Chicago Typewriter can be made available for the mode by completing Assignment: Ada .

Rewards [ ]

With every completed chapter of Separate Ways , the player can view a new part of Ada's Report . The option is added to the "Extras" section in the main menu after unlocking the first report. The reports detail certain plot events and shine a light upon Ada's true motives.

Successfully completing Separate Ways will unlock the Chicago Typewriter for the main game. Additionally, the costume set "Special 2" can be selected when starting a new game in the main game. This consists of a mafia costume for Leon and a suit of armor for Ashley.

Further notes [ ]

Nikita cover (movie)

DVD cover for La Femme Nikita .

  • The title screen of the mode pays homage to La Femme Nikita .
  • Whilst fighting Ganados in the beginning of the game, you might see Leon in the distance running from a group of Ganados as well as several sound effects of him and Chainsaw Man. However, it is impossible to confront Leon in-game. The same thing occurs in the castle, in the room with the rocket launcher in a glass case, and finally in Leon's final battle with Saddler.
  • When visiting The Merchant for the first time, he claims to not be open at the time, which explains why he does not put up his blue torches. However, he can never deny a good stranger some weapons and will happily buy and sell with you.
  • In the village, Ada sees the Ganado that had stolen Leon's jacket.

  1. What is the difference between assignment Ada and Seperate Ways? Thanks

Assignment ada is a sub hour long mini mission where you play as ada retrieving five samples on the island from chapter 5. It's pretty much entirely combat focused. It can be a little tougher than the main game but it's encounter design is pretty fun. Separate ways is a canonical adventure as ada that is more involved and has several ...

  3. What's the difference between Assignment Ada and Separate Ways?

The sticky has a bit of info on them, but here's a few things: Assignment Ada is a short single mission game where you gather 5 Plaga samples on the Island and plays more like Mercenaries than the main game. Separate Ways is what Ada was doing during the main game and plays more like the main game. Scientist (Topic Creator) 15 years ago #4 ...

  5. Resident Evil 4: Separate Ways review

The story of 2023's Separate Ways adds extra depth with its multilayered tale of Ada and Leon, and even the charismatic Luis Serra Navarro gets some much-needed love. 6. Resident Evil 4 VR Doesn't Have Separate Ways Or Mercenaries

  10. What comes first? Assignment Ada or seperate ways? :: Resident Evil 4

Devil Jan 1, 2017 @ 1:17am. Originally posted by Cartman of Los Illuminados: Assignment Ada first, then Separate Ways. 14. Assignment: Ada

Assignment: Ada, also known as Ada the Spy in some regions, is a non-canon minigame featured in Resident Evil 4 unlocked after completing the game. 15. Separate Ways Reward? How about 'Assignment Ada'?

HenshinHero11. •• Edited. Separate Ways was not included in the original GC release of RE4; Assignment Ada, however, was. Thus, it stands to reason that Capcom decided to flesh out the idea of an Ada-focused side campaign after seeing the reception of Assignment Ada, hence why Separate Ways was made and included in all other versions of RE4.

  21. Haven't seen anyone do a tier list for Ada's weapons in Separate Ways

I also thought the shotgun was good. I always sold that thing in the OG Separate Ways as it did no damage but here it was quite good. I like the shotguns in the Remake, I always try to get the exclusive for them. Did so for Ada and it did a lot of damage. The only weapon I didn't like was the TMP. Just don't like the Remake version.
