Each speaker gets exactly five minutes to teach, enlighten, or inspire the crowd, all backed up by 20 slides that advance automatically every 15 seconds.

Talks cover a wide range of (often geeky) topics, from roller skating to nuclear reactors.

Ignite Tampa Bay’s unique rapid-fire format draws a loyal audience that reflects our vibrant community, often filling our venues to capacity. Each event is different, but you’re sure to experience talks that will educate, inspire, motivate, and entertain. The Ignite concept first appeared in Seattle in 2006 and has since spread to many cities across the globe. We brought Ignite to Tampa Bay in 2011, and have been running events annually since.  You can find videos from past Ignite Tampa Bay events below or in our video archive .

Ignite Tampa Bay is a production of Technova Florida, Inc., a Tampa-based all-volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to creating resilient, radically inclusive tech and maker communities that empower positive change.

Our all volunteer organization produces other events throughout the year including Barcamp Tampa Bay each fall.

Trump condo owners cry foul on board election after name change dispute

Jorge Pérez says Tampa is Related Group’s “second home”

Miami’s condo king is plans to invest $3B on projects in the Gulf Coast city

Related Group Plans $3 Billion in Tampa Developments

A photo illustration of Related Group’s Jorge Pérez (Getty, Related Group)

While billionaire Jorge Pérez still believes in the magic of the city of Miami, the condo king sees Tampa as a “second home” for his Related Group.

In a city that has been better known for its high concentration of strip clubs , Pérez has plans to spend upwards of $3 billion on projects in the Gulf Coast city, according to an interview with the Tampa Bay Times . Pérez expanded into Tampa more than 40 years ago, but the pandemic set the stage for a new boom era in Florida real estate, and Related Group is poised to ride the wave, he said.

“We are by far the largest development entity today in Tampa,” Pérez told the outlet. “We think that the growth that you’re seeing now is nothing compared to what you’re going to see in the next decade.”

To date, Related has completed 2,000 units across the city and has thousands more in the pipeline. Projects in the works include the planned 89-unit, 27- story Ritz-Carlton Residences Tampa, and the affordable projects Canopy at West River and Rome Yard, Related’s website shows.

Despite comparisons drawn between the growth in both Miami and Tampa , Pérez declined to tag it as a mini Magic City.

“A mini-Miami is the wrong description,” he said to the outlet. “I think the businesses and the people that are coming to Tampa are in many ways different than the ones coming to Miami… The commonality is that businesses are starting to move to these two areas in a very rapid way.”

Pérez noted that the buyers in Tampa are predominantly from the Midwest, while buyers in Miami tend to come from New York and Latin America. While it’s a different crowd moving into the two cities, they are navigating similar market dynamics and growing pains, he said. Pérez touched on the importance of supporting the development of public transportation, infrastructure, educational and cultural institutions so that Tampa can keep pace.

“I think there are some cities that are destined to grow. Growth means that there are going to be issues,” he told the outlet. “To go back to the way things were in the past, it’s something that is nostalgic, but not really in the benefit of the community. Communities grow or die. And the world is becoming very competitive.”

We heard about Nawabi Hyderabad House from a friend, so for our Friday night dinner, we decided to order takeout from the restaurant. After exploring the menu and discussing options with the server over the phone, we chose Monagadi Kodi for the appetizer and Chicken Dum Biryani for the main course. I picked up the order from the restaurant in about 30 minutes. We started with the Monagadi Kodi, which was delicious and flavorful. We both loved it--it was one of the best chicken appetizers we've ever had, and we were thoroughly impressed. Next, we had the Chicken Dum Biryani. The biryani was well-made, with the chicken perfectly cooked and well-seasoned. Both the appetizer and the biryani were excellent, making for a delicious and satisfying Friday night dinner. Nawabi Hyderabad House exceeded our expectations, and we'll definitely be ordering from them again.

Good Indian biryani's restaurant. The restaurant has many Hyderabad area picture on the wall showing colorful city. This restaurant is popular on Friday lunch because many table got fill up. One thing for sure to be improved is wait staff. I only see one wait staff taking order. I do see many staff cleaning the table, delivering the dish to table. We got the non veggie thali limited plate. Even they said is non veggie, I only see three meat dish out of ten items. Lack of meat dishes. May be they need to see the competitors thali. The thali is flavorful. I like the bread on top of the rice and the fried chicken. The next dish we have is what I recommended- Nalli Gosht Biryani. This is very good dish and only serve during weekend. It is lamb leg with red sauce and favorite biryani. The lamb has a lot of meat. Overall service is good. Table do got some attention. It is worth the trip.

The newest Tampa franchise is located in a strip mall. The atmosphere is clean, beautifully decorated, and inviting. On this visit, they apparently had run out of my first two options so the order taker over the phone recommended Malai Kofta ($15). I requested it without heat, and asked for a side of butter ($9) and a ($7) Mango Lassi beverage. I received an average size Malai Kofta entree, but it was mildly hot-spiced anyway, so be aware. Even if requested one way, you may be served another way, and you won't be told so. The food was otherwise fresh and tasty. Naan was hot and fresh, but a bit overly buttery-greasy. The lassi came in a small plastic bottle. It was good.

What can I say? Wanted to try a new spot in town so we headed here. Restaurant was clean and nicely appointed. We had some major miscommunications with the server, I think she forgot to put my husband's order in. We asked for clarification on a few things and were told one of the items was boneless chicken but dish arrived with bone in. Were told naan came 2 to order but arrived with 1 (4 pieces) per order. I kinda just chalked it all up to being in the new phases still. After we ordered my friend was suggested to order a sampler plate, essentially of the curries. This made for a confused convo about how she has already ordered (like 10 mins ago), but maybe next time. If you order coke they have glass bottles of Mexican coke which we enjoyed but be aware no refills. My friend and I were both served and my husbands food did not come out. We inquired and she said it would be a few more minutes, I'll be damned if his food didn't come out when we were practically done (he insisted we start eating). I can say my food was really good, great flavors. My friend ordered a goat curry which had , unexpectedly, goat testicles in it. I mean, authentic I guess? At least make someone aware in case they don't want to eat it (she did not) . She also found a small black hair in her curry. I don't know what to think of my experience but I probably won't be back.

The interior deign of this place is much prettier than the average Indian restaurant. There is a bake good section you can pick cakes, bread and sweet. They looked quite attractive. We got the meat lunch talli plate. There were couples small bowl with soup, stew, sauce etc. The flesh mad bread and chips were very good. A small square of sweet was a nice touch to the conclusion of the meal. The weekend special lamb biryani was very good in terms of flavor, portion, size of protein, presentation, chef skill. I browsed through other tables, obviously this was their best seller. The service was good enough and yet adding more service staff will enhance the efficiency. I enjoyed the nice, open, clean and new space as well as their delicious food.

This place was super cool. I've never had specifically Hyderbadi cuisine and did feel a little bit overwhelmed by the menu. I think some descriptions on the menu would be super helpful for people like me who aren't familiar with the cuisine. I understand why there were no descriptions since when I looked around, our table was the only non-indian one (and the place was nearly full!) Despite being lost, I will add that the waitress was really helpful in making thoughtful suggestions for us and recommended some really good stuff. Just a note: All of the Biryanis had the exact same rice base and just the meat was prepared differently if you got different kinds, so if you like to try a variety of things between the table, then it's recommend getting more than just biryanis The food itself was amazing! The portions of Biryani were humongous, like a huge heaping pile of rice. I would say the medium hot is more like hot hot! So if you can't handle the spice, get a mild! Overall this was a great experience and I'd totally come back!

Went on a weekday Thursday night for dinner. We were greeted with a very friendly smile. Ordered Karampodi Kodi for appetizer, Monagadu Chicken Biryani and Ullavacharu Veg Pulav. In a few minutes they served complimentary Bhel, it was a nice snack to munch while waiting . It was lightly toasted and served with some onions, corriander, green chutney and a touch of grated carrot. Overall it was good. Next they served the Karampodi Kodi appetizer, I should say the aroma was very good. Even though I am a vegeterian I can tell by the aroma it filled the air at our table. My daughters loved it. Our main course was Managadu Chicken biryani and Ulavacharu Veg Pulav. Simply awesome food. We were busy enjoying our dinner so forgot to take the photos of our main course. If you are someone who is a fan of Ulavacharu, then you should give it a try. Overall, the food was all great and had generous portions, definitely worth it. And not to forgot , the owner of the place had a nice chit chat and we were given a sample of jilebis. Yummy Girls did had mango lassi, mango cake, gulab jamun, and tres leches cake. All good ones. I'll definitely visit this place again.

Is Tampa the next Miami? Related Group CEO Jorge Pérez weighs in

  • Rebecca Liebson Times staff

When Miami-based developer Related Group entered the Tampa market 40 years ago, the sprawling suburban enclave was known to outsiders mainly as the butt of a joke : the country’s “strip club capital.”

Then, in the last five years, something shifted.

It’s hard to pinpoint what exactly caused it — Florida’s lax COVID-19 regulations during the peak of the pandemic, the relatively cheaper cost of living, the strong job market. But following a long line of once-overlooked cities like Austin, Nashville or Charleston, suddenly Tampa became trendy.

As developers descended on the region, looking to get a piece of the action, Related already had its foot in the door. To date, the company has completed construction on more than 2,000 residential units in Tampa and has thousands more in the pipeline.

“We are by far the largest development entity today in Tampa,” said Related’s founder and CEO, Jorge Pérez. “Tampa has become our second home.”

The company’s projects range from the ultra-luxury Ritz-Carlton Residences — which just broke the sales record for Tampa Bay’s most expensive condo — to Rome Yards, a sprawling mixed-use apartment complex with 20% of units reserved as affordable housing.

“It’s a city that wants to be great,” Pérez said. And, with plans to spend upward of $3 billion in Tampa in the next few years, he’s betting that it will be.

Pérez spoke with the Tampa Bay Times about Related’s strategy in Tampa, how the market compares to South Florida and what challenges lie ahead. This interview has been edited for clarity and length.

Related had a presence in this area long before it was considered a hot housing market. What drew you to Tampa Bay?

This is a city that has the most diversified employment base in Florida. Tampa is not just a tourist economy.

While people love to go to the beaches in St. Petersburg and they like Tampa as a city, with the culture that they’re trying to bring and the businesses that are there and are coming to there, we see it as definitely becoming the second-most-important city in Florida, competing with the South Florida area.

Because of that, we’ve made a very strong commitment to Tampa. We think that the growth that you’re seeing now is nothing compared to what you’re going to see in the next decade.

With all the high-rise development that’s happened in the past few years, a lot of people say that Tampa is turning into a mini-Miami. What do you think?

A mini-Miami is the wrong description. Sometimes they call Miami a mini-New York. I think every city has its own idiosyncrasies.

I think the businesses and the people that are coming to Tampa are in many ways different than the ones coming to Miami. When we sell condominiums in Tampa, our sales are mostly to people from the Midwest, some from New York, and mostly to Tampa people that want to not be in a big home anymore. In Miami when we do the same thing, the market is almost 50% made up of Latin Americans that want to be in Miami.

The commonality is that businesses are starting to move to these two areas in a very rapid way. They’re leaving the older cities and the more problematic cities. (Tampa and Miami) are going to be in competition for many of these new corporations that want to set up total bases or regional bases for their companies.

Both cities were highly suburban and I think they’re becoming much more urban. Tampa is trying very smartly and very aggressively to get the urban core to become something that is attractive to people.

A lot of people, particularly those that have lived here for a long time, are against the sort of high-density development you’re describing. They miss the days when Tampa was quieter and more suburban. What would you say to those who are concerned about the direction the city is moving?

I think there are some cities that are destined to grow. Growth means that there are going to be issues. I think that you need to make growth sustainable, of course, you need public transportation, roads, infrastructure, education — all that that goes with it.

To go back to the way things were in the past, it’s something that is nostalgic, but not really in the benefit of the community. Communities grow or die. And the world is becoming very competitive.

Corporations and people that are employed by those corporations and people that want to retire are looking for certain things in cities. They’re coming from larger cities. They’re coming from places where things are provided to them in the urban core.

When you talk to corporations, and we’re talking to them all the time, and you ask them, ‘Why do you want to relocate here? What do your employees want?’ They want good schools, they want access to culture, they want open spaces with parks in walkable areas and they don’t want to drive long distances to get to those spaces.

At Related, we try to bring the best concepts from other places and work within the densities and heights of those environments. When we go to Bayshore, we’re not going to do a 100-story building like we would in New York.

We work very closely with cities to provide projects that are keeping with the zoning and development vision that the government and planning departments have laid out. There are very few variances that we ask for with the developments that we do. We just try to make them more beautiful and responsive to the needs of the community.

Will Tampa look very different 10 years from now? Without a doubt. In my opinion, will it be much more beautiful? Without a doubt.

A lot of people associate the changes Tampa has undergone with rising prices. How can we ensure that people who were here before this renaissance can afford to stay here and reap the benefits?

This is a problem for every high-growth city.

People are unfortunately being priced out of the urban core that we’re trying to create. Every time you go into a neighborhood and the neighborhood becomes upgraded, there are people that suffer and people that benefit. That’s just the private market system. We don’t have a totalitarian system that says, ‘You can’t go into this neighborhood.’

That displaces some people. That’s why with the West River development , for example, we’re trying very hard to work with the city and the housing authority to make developments that are affordable for a wider income range. When you look just at us building 3,000 units of affordable housing , that is a huge amount compared to other cities.

Is a developer greedy for charging more? In reality, we’re making the same or lower profits. We’re having lower margins because of the huge cost of land and construction. There is no development that is going to happen at a loss. The huge increases of cost we have seen will have to be paid by the consumer.

It is going to be up to the cities and to the governments to work with developers like us to continue to provide necessary subsidies. They can speed up the building permits, they can create greater density, they can lower real estate taxes for products that are more affordable. They can provide land or low-interest loans or grants.

On the private sector side, we need to look at ways to build apartments that are less costly. So we’re doing both condo apartments in which we have 400-square-foot studios, 550-square-foot one-bedrooms, 700- to 800-square-foot smaller two-bedrooms. We’re doing some apartments that are built for apartment sharing, where we will build a four-bedroom apartment with a common living room dining room, and each bedroom has its own bathroom.

I think a lot of people are shocked by just how suddenly the cost of living has gone up though. During the peak of the pandemic, rent spiked 30% in one year. How did this happen?

During COVID ... people were not moving from their homes. Businesses were not moving. It was a very quiet time.

Then, people in the older cities and in the Midwest and Northeast realized they wanted open areas. They wanted to be in places with sun and fresh air — cities like, you know, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach. All of the sudden with work from home they realized they can live in these places.

We don’t have the high taxes like they do in New York or San Francisco or in Chicago or the social problems they have in some of those areas.

We have a much more pro-business government. Companies started moving much faster. That produced a huge increase in demand for housing and other services. And that demand is still outpacing the supply and raising costs.

It’s very hard to stop the flood. Market forces are market forces. What cities need to do is plan accordingly.

Developers are facing high interest rates, high labor costs and high material costs which can make it difficult to finance new construction projects. Will this put a damper on the recent growth Tampa has seen?

With COVID we saw an increase in demand and people started buying everything. Prices went up. That means inflation went up. The Federal Reserve increased interest rates to try and dampen that growth.

The Federal Reserve thought that they going to have two or three interest rate reductions in 2024. But inflation has not gone down at the rate they wanted so — so far, we haven’t seen that interest cut.

We are predicting that 2024 will be a flat year and that then we will see an expansion of growth in ‘25 and ‘26.

Florida will continue to have, as it has in the last five decades, periods of a boom and bust. That has been our history and I think that will continue, unfortunately.

I do not see any decreases happening in rents or home prices. No one I know is predicting that.

What will it take for Tampa to become a world-class city on par with Miami or New York?

I think cultural facilities are very important. So you don’t have to go to New York to look at great art shows or see great theater or see great opera or see great bands.

I think education is very important. So upgrading of all education systems from K-12 and university. Tampa has the University of Tampa and it’s got the University of South Florida. Those will continue to have to be upgraded to compete with schools that you see in California and the Northeast.

Transportation systems are extremely important. How do we get people to their jobs without always having to be in a car? And even if they are in a car, how do we make it easier?

Parks, recreation, great restaurants. Those are the things that people really want.

In the old days, the government would fund all of this, but these facilities are not self-supporting now. So with Related, both the company and our family foundation, we give huge amounts, I’m talking tens of millions of dollars on a yearly basis to support these community facilities — both cultural, social and economic — so that the city can compete.

'Dangerous' Buccaneers Rookie Could Result in New Personnel Group

  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are installing another new offense this season with coordinator LIam Coen coming in to replace Dave Canales, who was hired to be the head coach of the Carolina Panthers.

With coach Coen is coming a renewed belief that the Buccaneers' offense could actually take a step forward despite the fact many usually take a step back when installing a new scheme.

READ MORE: OTA Day 4 Observations

Part of the reason Tampa Bay has that confidence is because of the connection between Coen and quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Another is the presence of weapons like receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin and running back Rachaad White. Joining them is rookie running back Bucky Irving, who Ryan Fowler of Bleacher Report says is the Bucs' most dangerous new player this season.

Jan 1, 2024; Glendale, AZ, USA; Oregon Ducks running back Bucky Irving (0) against the Liberty Flames during the 2024 Fiesta Bowl at State Farm Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

"Fourth-round tailback Bucky Irving will add a completely new wrinkle to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offense," -  Ryan Fowler, Bleacher Report

"White touts one of the more nuanced games in space among any NFL running back. However, fourth-round tailback Bucky Irving will add a completely new wrinkle to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offense," Fowler said. "Pony personnel (two RBs) could be a way for Tampa Bay to create mismatches within the front seven. The explosiveness of Irving against a less athletic linebacker or bigger safety could repeatedly create chunk plays."

In 2023, according to Sports Info Solutions , the Buccaneers offense under Canales used two-back sets just around 15 percent of the time, ranking near the bottom of the league in 21 personnel usage (two running backs, one tight end) and fourth in 20.

However, SIS reports no two-back set usage for the Rams in Coen's last season running the offense in Los Angeles.

Still, you have to believe a weapon with the potential Irving brings to the roster will be used, and putting both he and White on the field at the same time is an attractive possibility.

Premier says sex education group will be banned from giving school presentations

Organization disputes suggestion that material delivered was outside curriculum.

Social Sharing

Premier Blaine Higgs says he will ban a Quebec-based sex education group from presenting at schools in New Brunswick after a presentation he believes was "clearly inappropriate."

The premier took to X, formerly Twitter, to express his displeasure with a presentation given at several New Brunswick high schools.

"To say I am furious would be a gross understatement," he said. "This presentation was not part of the New Brunswick curriculum and the content was not flagged for parents in advance.

"The fact that this was shared shows either improper vetting was done, the group misrepresented the content they would share ... or both."

Higgs said the Department of Education told his office the presentation was supposed to be about the sexually transmitted infection human papillomavirus – but it went beyond that.

A pink and purple presentation slide with four text bubbles.

He shared and criticized a presentation slide that includes questions like "do girls masturbate" and "is it good or bad to do anal?"

Teresa Norris, who delivered the presentation to several New Brunswick schools last week, denied that schools were misled about what the presentation would cover.

The president and founder of the charity HPV Global Action, which also operates a youth sexual education resource called Thirsty for the Talk, said she was surprised and disappointed at Higgs's reaction.

She said the slide Higgs shared was the presentation's cover slide. She said it reflects actual questions her group receives from students.

"That excerpt that was taken is an extraction of something that's very grossly misrepresenting what this presentation is about," Norris said.

A presentation slide that reads "4 out of 5 have had HPV at some point in their life," with cartoon people shaded in red and green.

"All of the topics that we cover are supporting the learning areas. This is something that your province has decided ... We're not creating something that the province hasn't already put in place."

Norris said she has been giving presentations at New Brunswick schools for several years. All schools receive an outline of the topics to be covered and the school must give its consent prior to the presentation, she said.

The presentation is called Healthy Relationships 101. Norris said it is an "A to Z" about relationships and sexuality.

"We are not promoting any of these sexual behaviours ... we talk about abstinence in the presentation, we empower students to help them make decisions about their relationships," she said.

A presentation slide about healthy relationships.

"We teach them to understand when they are not comfortable, or that they don't feel ready, and to pay attention so that they have those boundaries. Our goal is always to destigmatize conversations about sexual health."

Objectives in the province's high school sex education curriculum include having students define sexuality, discuss safe sex practices that include abstinence, masturbation, condom use and birth control options, and how to handle sexual feelings and sexual pressure.

Andrea Anderson-Mason, MLA for Fundy-the Isles-Saint John West, said she has heard about the presentation from teachers and constituents with family members who attend Fundy Middle-High School.

The Anglophone South School District has not responded to a request for comment.

Anderson-Mason said she has a daughter in Grade 12 at the school, but the presentation was only delivered to Grade 9 to Grade 11 students.

The MLA said reaction has been mixed and she is hoping to see a balanced conversation on the issue.

A person speaking to reporters.

"When I was in high school, I had a male teacher teach me about breast self-examination, and at 47 years old I am still grateful for that information and use it," she said. "There is a time and a place and an appropriateness to talk about our bodies."

For Norris, the ultimate goal is to help students stay informed and avoid getting into relationship situations they are not ready for.

Despite Higgs's statement, she has not been given any formal message from the province banning the presentation.

Requests to the premier's office for comment have not been answered.
