Sphdthesis: a latex template for writing phd thesis.
SPhdThesis is a latex document class for writing PhD thesis. I developed it while writing my PhD thesis in School of Computing (SoC), National University of Singapore (NUS). By default, it adheres to the NUS Guidelines on Format of Research Thesis Submitted For Examination (Link updated on 31/05/2014). However, it is quite easy to change it for a different guideline.
Downloading
You can download the latest version here or fork it at Github .
Getting started
The easiest way to start using SPhdThesis is to copy the example folder and start by inspecting and modifying thesis.tex . figure.tex , table.tex , algorithm.tex files show how to format figures, tables, and algorithms, respectively. thesis.pdf is an example of how a thesis looks like using SPhdThesis document class.
For more details read SPhdThesis.pdf . It describes in detail how to use the document class and provide some hints on how to customize it. It also lists some useful tools for working with latex.
Getting Help
The best place is to raise an issue on Github . Alternatively, you can use the comment form at the bottom of this post.

The ensuing page enables you to enter keywords that best describe your topic for example e.g. youth volunt*, limiting the search within Theses (NUS) Collection :

1. Use the * (asterisk) sign to retrieve variant forms of the root word "volunt". This would retrieve other forms of the word after where the asterisk is placed. In this example, it would include volunteering, voluntarism, voluntarily, etc.
2. The search operator ( aka Boolean operator ) ' AND' is automatically subsumed between the two keywords ( youth AND volunt* ).
Note : From 2018 onwards, undergraduate theses would be made available via our institutional repository ScholarBank@NUS . Click on the image below to access theses in ScholarBank@NUS .
Search By Faculty/School/Dept

BComp Dissertation (FYP) - Dissertation
Time line for BComp/BSc Dissertation (Final Year Project) Presentation
Please refer to the Project Administration System for the schedule of presentation of your project.
- Presentation
One of the most important skills which the FYP aims to assess is your ability to communicate your ideas and work. As part of the assessment, you will be required to give a presentation of your project. The presentation is a compulsory component of the FYP. The evaluators will not allocate any mark for a project unless there had been a formal presentation.
Students who have registered for CP4101/BT4101 this semester would be presenting in the following semester. Project presentations are held in a seminar style and a number of parallel sessions would be held. As far as possible, projects in similar areas would be grouped. Each presentation will be timetabled for around 40 minutes (to be announced) including Q & A. Please refer to the Project Administration System for the schedule of presentation of your project.
Final Year Project can be presented only during regular semesters. There is no provision to make a FYP presentation in either Special Term I or II.
Preparation for presentation
Once a seminar presentation date for a project has been fixed, any request for changes in the schedule will not be considered, unless for medical reasons, as it would affect all other schedules.
Student should prepare their presentation using powerpoint slides and bring them on thumb drive on the day of the seminar. Students have to come to the seminar venue at least 30 minutes before the start of the entire session (not their own presentation time-slot) and load their presentation slides on to the PC in the seminar venue.
The seminar is opened to all staff and students in SoC. Academic staff may invite industry partners to attend. For external projects, staff of the external organisation may also attend the presentations.
The presenter should be prepared to answer questions related to the project from the evaluators and visitors. Each parallel session is about 3 hours. Presenter must be present at all times during the assigned time-slot.
All presentations shall be held at the School of Computing.
Assessment Criteria
Continuous assessment (CA) accounts for 30% of the final grade of the project. CA given by supervisor will be 15% and the main evaluator would assess the progress for 15%.
Final presentation shall be assessed by the main evaluator. The final evaluation will account for 70% of the final grade of the project. The weightage for supervisor and main evaluator are 35% and 35% respectively.
The final evaluation is carried out based on the following criteria:
- Understanding of the Problem
- Technical Achievement
- Effort and Initiative
- Project and Resource Management
- Project Report and Discussion including organization, writing style, work reported and discussion
Assessment criteria is laid out in more details. For each criterion, 4 distinguishable bands are given to differentiate students. Please see the BComp evaluation form.

Quick method.
Use the following method to search for NUS Masters & PhD theses and dissertations from September 2003 onwards.
1. The Electronic Theses & Dissertations (ETD) within ScholarBank@NUS contains electronic copies of NUS theses and dissertations from September 2003 onwards. Only Master’s (by Research) and Ph.D theses and dissertations are included.
2. Other NUS theses and dissertations might be available in hard copy and can be found by searching the library catalogue. To search for them refer to the following guide on searching for theses .
Not all theses (in particular academic exercises or FYPs) submitted to NUS are in the Libraries' collection as some of them may not be released by departments to the Libraries.
Foreign Theses
1. The library has a limited selection of foreign thesis available. See this guide on searching for them globally
2. NUS Libraries subscribes to ProQuest Dissertations and Theses which contains full-text with citations and abstracts of many doctoral dissertations and master's theses submitted to over 1,000 North American graduate schools, European and Australian universities.
3. Some Chinese theses sources
