master research topics computer science

Computer science deals with the theory and practice of algorithms, from idealized mathematical procedures to the computer systems deployed by major tech companies to answer billions of user requests per day.

Primary subareas of this field include: theory, which uses rigorous math to test algorithms’ applicability to certain problems; systems, which develops the underlying hardware and software upon which applications can be implemented; and human-computer interaction, which studies how to make computer systems more effectively meet the needs of real people. The products of all three subareas are applied across science, engineering, medicine, and the social sciences. Computer science drives interdisciplinary collaboration both across MIT and beyond, helping users address the critical societal problems of our era, including opportunity access, climate change, disease, inequality and polarization.

Research areas

Our goal is to develop AI technologies that will change the landscape of healthcare. This includes early diagnostics, drug discovery, care personalization and management. Building on MIT’s pioneering history in artificial intelligence and life sciences, we are working on algorithms suitable for modeling biological and clinical data across a range of modalities including imaging, text and genomics.

Our research covers a wide range of topics of this fast-evolving field, advancing how machines learn, predict, and control, while also making them secure, robust and trustworthy. Research covers both the theory and applications of ML. This broad area studies ML theory (algorithms, optimization, …), statistical learning (inference, graphical models, causal analysis, …), deep learning, reinforcement learning, symbolic reasoning ML systems, as well as diverse hardware implementations of ML.

We develop the next generation of wired and wireless communications systems, from new physical principles (e.g., light, terahertz waves) to coding and information theory, and everything in between.

We bring some of the most powerful tools in computation to bear on design problems, including modeling, simulation, processing and fabrication.

We design the next generation of computer systems. Working at the intersection of hardware and software, our research studies how to best implement computation in the physical world. We design processors that are faster, more efficient, easier to program, and secure. Our research covers systems of all scales, from tiny Internet-of-Things devices with ultra-low-power consumption to high-performance servers and datacenters that power planet-scale online services. We design both general-purpose processors and accelerators that are specialized to particular application domains, like machine learning and storage. We also design Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools to facilitate the development of such systems.

Educational technology combines both hardware and software to enact global change, making education accessible in unprecedented ways to new audiences. We develop the technology that makes better understanding possible.

The shared mission of Visual Computing is to connect images and computation, spanning topics such as image and video generation and analysis, photography, human perception, touch, applied geometry, and more.

The focus of our research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is inventing new systems and technology that lie at the interface between people and computation, and understanding their design, implementation, and societal impact.

We develop new approaches to programming, whether that takes the form of programming languages, tools, or methodologies to improve many aspects of applications and systems infrastructure.

Our work focuses on developing the next substrate of computing, communication and sensing. We work all the way from new materials to superconducting devices to quantum computers to theory.

Our research focuses on robotic hardware and algorithms, from sensing to control to perception to manipulation.

Our research is focused on making future computer systems more secure. We bring together a broad spectrum of cross-cutting techniques for security, from theoretical cryptography and programming-language ideas, to low-level hardware and operating-systems security, to overall system designs and empirical bug-finding. We apply these techniques to a wide range of application domains, such as blockchains, cloud systems, Internet privacy, machine learning, and IoT devices, reflecting the growing importance of security in many contexts.

From distributed systems and databases to wireless, the research conducted by the systems and networking group aims to improve the performance, robustness, and ease of management of networks and computing systems.

Theory of Computation (TOC) studies the fundamental strengths and limits of computation, how these strengths and limits interact with computer science and mathematics, and how they manifest themselves in society, biology, and the physical world.

What makes a strong computer science research topic.

A strong computer science topic is clear, well-defined, and easy to understand. It should also reflect the research’s purpose, scope, or aim. In addition, a strong computer science research topic is devoid of abbreviations that are not generally known, though, it can include industry terms that are currently and generally accepted.

Tips for Choosing a Computer Science Research Topic

  • Brainstorm . Brainstorming helps you develop a few different ideas and find the best topic for you. Some core questions you should ask are, What are some open questions in computer science? What do you want to learn more about? What are some current trends in computer science?
  • Choose a sub-field . There are many subfields and career paths in computer science . Before choosing a research topic, ensure that you point out which aspect of computer science the research will focus on. That could be theoretical computer science, contemporary computing culture, or even distributed computing research topics.
  • Aim to answer a question . When you’re choosing a research topic in computer science, you should always have a question in mind that you’d like to answer. That helps you narrow down your research aim to meet specified clear goals.
  • Do a comprehensive literature review . When starting a research project, it is essential to have a clear idea of the topic you plan to study. That involves doing a comprehensive literature review to better understand what has been learned about your topic in the past.
  • Keep the topic simple and clear. The topic should reflect the scope and aim of the research it addresses. It should also be concise and free of ambiguous words. Hence, some researchers recommended that the topic be limited to five to 15 substantive words. It can take the form of a question or a declarative statement.

What’s the Difference Between a Research Topic and a Research Question?

A research topic is the subject matter that a researcher chooses to investigate. You may also refer to it as the title of a research paper. It summarizes the scope of the research and captures the researcher’s approach to the research question. Hence, it may be broad or more specific. For example, a broad topic may read, Data Protection and Blockchain, while a more specific variant can read, Potential Strategies to Privacy Issues on the Blockchain.

On the other hand, a research question is the fundamental starting point for any research project. It typically reflects various real-world problems and, sometimes, theoretical computer science challenges. As such, it must be clear, concise, and answerable.

How to Create Strong Computer Science Research Questions

To create substantial computer science research questions, one must first understand the topic at hand. Furthermore, the research question should generate new knowledge and contribute to the advancement of the field. It could be something that has not been answered before or is only partially answered. It is also essential to consider the feasibility of answering the question.

Computer Science at Columbia University

Upcoming events, in the news, press mentions, dean boyce's statement on amicus brief filed by president bollinger.

President Bollinger announced that Columbia University along with many other academic institutions (sixteen, including all Ivy League universities) filed an amicus brief in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York challenging the Executive Order regarding immigrants from seven designated countries and refugees. Among other things, the brief asserts that “safety and security concerns can be addressed in a manner that is consistent with the values America has always stood for, including the free flow of ideas and people across borders and the welcoming of immigrants to our universities.”

This recent action provides a moment for us to collectively reflect on our community within Columbia Engineering and the importance of our commitment to maintaining an open and welcoming community for all students, faculty, researchers and administrative staff. As a School of Engineering and Applied Science, we are fortunate to attract students and faculty from diverse backgrounds, from across the country, and from around the world. It is a great benefit to be able to gather engineers and scientists of so many different perspectives and talents – all with a commitment to learning, a focus on pushing the frontiers of knowledge and discovery, and with a passion for translating our work to impact humanity.

I am proud of our community, and wish to take this opportunity to reinforce our collective commitment to maintaining an open and collegial environment. We are fortunate to have the privilege to learn from one another, and to study, work, and live together in such a dynamic and vibrant place as Columbia.

master research topics computer science

Choosing a topic for your master’s thesis is a very important step. It all depends, to a large extent, on your interests and abilities. During your studies you have surely discovered the areas of computer science that you are good at and which of them you plan to improve in the future. Before you embark on a topic search, consider the following suggestions to help you craft an initial strategy.

Suggestions when choosing a Master’s Thesis topic

First of all, you have to choose a good supervisor or academic advisor. It is very important that you collaborate with a teacher whose interests match your topic; otherwise, you will benefit little from the writing process. Ask questions and find out if previous students were satisfied with their supervision.

Introduction to Computer Science Dissertations

A master’s degree in Information and Communications Technology is designed to meet the requirements of people working as different professionals, such as academics, administrators and managers, technical staff, trainers and developers in the private or public sectors. A master’s degree in computer science combines theory and educational practice to create a learning experience that allows for the development of skills that can be applied to complicated real-world problems.

The MSc in Computer Science aims to improve knowledge of how computer systems, software and applications, as well as other forms of communication technologies, can be used to drive economic growth, improve learning capacity, encourage greater communication and socialisation and generally improve living standards.

Thinking about the subfields of computer science that interest you

When looking for a thesis topic, don’t just focus on the defended works. Again, ask your teacher to give you a list of current topics in the field of computer science that are underdeveloped. Your professors have deep experience and are aware of all directions of research conducted in their areas of scientific interest. They can suggest a great idea and help you put it into practice. Here are some ideas:

Programme structure (old and new programme structures)

Implications of cloud computing for the multimedia industry

With the advancement of information and communication technologies, security remains one of the biggest concerns and also an important field of research.

Interpretation of information systems security management

The security management of information systems is evaluated according to the business environment, the organizational culture, the expectations and obligations of the different roles, the meanings of the different actions and the related behavioral patterns. The results of the two case studies show that inadequate analysis, design and management of computer-based information systems affect the integrity and integrity of an organization. As a result, the likelihood of adverse events occurs increases. In such an environment, it is very likely that security measures will be ignored or inadequate for the real needs of an organization. Therefore, what is needed is consistency between computer-based information systems and the business environment in which they are integrated.

A framework for assessing the quality of customer information

This thesis addresses a widespread, significant and persistent problem in the practice of information systems: the lack of investment in the quality of information about customers. Many organizations need clear financial models to undertake investments in their information systems and related processes. However, there are no widely accepted approaches to rigorously articulate the costs and benefits of potential improvements in the quality of customer information. This can result in low-quality customer information that impacts the broader goals of the organization.

Search Based Software Engineering

Search Based Software Engineering (SBSE) uses advanced computational search (for example genetic algorithms and evolutionary computation and other meta and hyper heuristics) to solve complex software engineering problems.

Prof Harman was instrumental in founding this field of Software Engineering and coined the term “Search Based Software Engineering” in 2001. Professor Sarro and Professor Petka are well-established world-leading researchers in this area.

SBSE can be thought of as the application of advanced AI techniques to software engineering, with a particular focus on optimisation. Read a recent tutorial paper on SBSE .

CREST has worked with ABB, Daimler, Ericsson, Google, IBM, Meta, Microsoft and Motorola on the development of SBSE so PhD students have many opportunities to work with companies should they wish to do so.

Possible collaboration and PhD topics in this area cover the complete spectrum of activity in software engineering (in its traditional and emergent forms). CREST is particularly well known for work on SBSE applications to software analysis and testing, repair, refactoring, management and requirements engineering. However, we are always willing to discuss SBSE projects with scholars who are interested in developing new application areas as well as these more established areas.

They have given many keynote talks and invited papers that set out open problems and research agendas for exciting developments in SBSE, all of which are available on our publications page. Prof. Harman, Sarro and Petke are is always willing to discuss potential projects on SBSE with prospective students via email. Other SSE staff are also very active in SBSE: Dr Krinke is interested in SBSE for clone detection; Dr Gold is interested in SBSE for program comprehension and program analysis and musicology.

Testing Software Product Lines

Software product lines are sets features that are combined into software products that satisfy a specific need from a customer or a specific market. The number of products that can be generated range from a few to thousands of products.

Due to the tangled components and complex configuration, verification and validation of product lines is challenging. Testing is one approach to verification and validation of the products and/or the product line.

The challenges in testing product lines that have to be faced and solved are that it may not be possible to test each possible product individually and that there exist no possibility to test a product line independent of products.

Dependence Analysis and Change Impact Analysis

Software systems can be seen of collections of parts that may or may not depend on each other. These range from statements and functions that are linked to each other, over large components like classes or packages, to non-source code artefacts like requirements and models that are linked to each other or to other artefacts.

In this research stream, we analyse software systems to identify the dependencies between the different parts and use them to solve software engineering problems. One example of such a problem is change impact analysis where the question is which elements of a software system are affected by a (potential) change to an element of the system.

Change impact analysis is an important technique that is extremely useful during software maintenance, for example, it can be used to establish which test cases have to be rerun after a change has been applied to a system.

Source Code Provenance

With the availability of source code available to be reused and the huge number of developers involved in large projects, it gets more and more important to establish the provenance of the current code within a project.

This touches questions like “where is this code coming from”, “who has modified the code”, or “where has this code been reused”.  Such questions arise for example to establish if one is allowed to use the software according to its license or just to figure out who can answer questions about that code best. Approaches to answer such questions use large-scale string matching and software repository mining.

Secure Information Flow

A lot effort in making software secure goes into a kind of “fire-fighting”, i.e. discovering and closing vulnerabilities in code. However, even if all vulnerabilities have been eliminated, code still may not be secure.

It may contain covert channels that allow attacks on confidentiality of information, integrity of information, and the privacy and anonymity of the user. Such covert channels leaking information may be within the logic of the program or be so-called “side channels” such as measuring execution times or heat dissipation over different runs.

The challenge of constructing security critical code for contemporary software is enormous. Semantics based program analysis and type systems have a large role to play in guaranteeing end-to-end information security for networked systems.

  • Contact David Clark

Semantic Analysis of Found Code

Found code is code that the analyser did not write. It may be source code or binaries. The task is to understand what it does and the (common) motivation is defence against malicious behaviours. Techniques include reverse engineering, program analysis, testing, and use of SMT solvers.

There are a whole range of problem domains in this area, for example malware classification and techniques for combatting packing, encryption and rewriting engines.

Testing Information Transformers

The hypothesis for this research is that the answers to some long standing questions in the theory of testing programs can be found or at least improved by viewing programs as transformers of information and using techniques from information theory and the measurement of information flow in programs to build an information theoretic theory of testing which answers questions such as the following.

  • How do I select the test suite?
  • When is it adequate?
  • What does adequate mean in terms of information?
  • How do I order the tests?

There is a security aspect to this research. An improvement in testing generally will improve the “fire fighting” of vulnerabilities and exploits, particularly when harnessed with information about attack vector templates.

Human-Computer Music Performance

There are many professional and amateur ensembles that perform popular music (e.g. jazz, rock, folk, music theatre, and contemporary church music) and would benefit from a computer stepping in when a human musician is absent and unable to play.

Popular music has a steady beat and reasonably well-defined structures (e.g. chord patterns), but typically involves improvisation at many levels including sectionalised scores (re-arrangeable during performance), and improvised generation of the musical surface.

Live interactive performance in this genre is thus a complex and interesting domain in which to undertake research.  Many disciplines and research methods are needed to tackle this problem including ethnography, computer vision, natural user interfaces, computer music (generation, machine listening, music information retrieval, representation), musicology, music performance, and real-time systems.

Applications are thus welcome from potential students who have experience and expertise from a range of backgrounds.

  • Contact Nicolas Gold

Computational Musicology

Computers have many applications in musicology, ranging from relatively simple applications to support musicologists in answering particular questions, through to complex models and algorithms to support entire research areas.

Previous work in CREST has focused on computationally-enhanced studies of musical performance (piano performance, shaping in music) and continues by applying our expertise in information theory and search to problems in music analysis.

Much of this work is collaborative (e.g. with the AHRC Centre for Musical Performance as Creative Practice and the UCL Centre for Digital Humanities).

Interdisciplinary Source Code Analysis

Combining CREST’s expertise in source code analysis and our interest in interdisciplinary applications, this strand of research focuses on the challenges posed by non-traditional source code (e.g. Max/MSP patches) and the opportunities available to enhance practice and research by developing new ways to analyse and develop in such languages.

We have worked on clone detection in graphical data-flow languages like Max/MSP and Pure Data and welcome applications from potential students with interests in arts computing and/or source code analysis.

Probabilistic Modelling of S/W Testing

Most of the existing white-box testing techniques rely on structural adequacy criteria, such as statement or path coverage. The purpose of defining test adequacy criteria is to achieve a balance between effectiveness and efficiency of testing.

However, structural criteria fail to scale up for the systems that can really benefit from better testing, simply because fine-grained metrics like code coverage lose the relevance for large and complex systems. This strand of research combines the existing expertise of CREST – information theory and testing – to form a probabilistic view of the software testing, allowing us to assess and predict the system’s reliability with confidence.

Gamification of Software Engineering

The success of Search-Based Software Engineering (SBSE) bears an interesting observation: many software engineering tasks can be viewed as combinatorial optimisation.

This research will investigate whether it is possible to create entertaining gaming experience, essentially by extending meta-heuristics for SBSE to more interactive ones.

The grand challenge is to completely encapsulate the original software engineering problem and to present a playable game instead, seeking human insights into the problem solving. The research will also consider whether any non-conventional user interface and/or visualization can help specific software engineering tasks.

Unique Program Offers Campus Research Opportunities for Online Students

From her home more than 800 miles away, Georgia Tech online master's student  Jasmine Tata  is monitoring fish in aquariums at Georgia Tech.

Tata is a New York-based QA analyst and project manager. She started the  Online Master of Science in Computer Science (OMSCS)  program in Fall 2022 and joined FishStalkers last year.

The student-led research program is part of the  School of Biological Sciences'   McGrath Lab . Its researchers use machine learning, computer vision, and other technologies to better understand the evolution of animal behaviors.

One of the lab's research projects studies Lake Malawi cichlids to explore connections between observed behavior and brain function.

The FishStalkers are vital to the project. They collect video, depth, and other data from individual fish using Raspberry Pi single-board computers. This information, coupled with open-source code they developed, allows the group to track, monitor, and classify the behaviors of a fish as it builds and maintains its bower, which is a sand structure these cichlids use to attract mates.

Along with monitoring the research tanks, Tata's contributions include improving the automated collection and analysis of data streaming from the Pis. She's also helping to adapt the data pipeline to work with yellow-head, orange-cap, and other cichlid species.

[RELATED: Georgia Tech's OMSCS Program Celebrates 10th Anniversary]

"I've enjoyed learning more about new problems in a relatively unfamiliar field. In a pure computer science-focused lab, I never would experience the frustrations of data collection that come with biological subjects," said Tata.

"The fish builds bowers on its own schedule, and data collection must accurately capture this, regardless of weekends or holidays."

Tata says her experience with FishStalkers has given her new ideas about presenting data to non-technical team members. The team uses a spreadsheet integrated with data collection scripts running on the Raspberry Pis. The spreadsheet allows someone without technical knowledge to pause, upload data, or start new trials simply by toggling a dropdown.

"This has given me a lot of ideas about how to meet people where they are in terms of technical skills when it comes to user interface design and has encouraged me to learn more about  human-computer interaction ," said Tata.

Tata learned about the  FishStalkers research group  when its founder,  Breanna Shi , reached out through the OMSCS Slack study channel. Shi developed the group through Georgia Tech's Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) program as a mentorship program.

"Given their real-world computer science experience, I wanted to see if there were OMSCS students interested in collaborating on FishStalkers projects and assisting in the mentorship of undergraduate researchers," said Shi.

Shi is a third-year Ph.D. student studying bioinformatics with minors in machine learning and higher education. She created FishStalkers as a mentorship program because she recognized that undergraduate and masters-level students could feel less valued or isolated in research environments.

"The FishStalkers model empowers all its researchers with the respect and responsibility as a full team member. Whether it's your first week as a FishStalker or your last, you will complete tasks that benefit the research team and yourself," said Shi.

[RELATED: Women-Centered Mentorship Provides Empowerment to Conquer Ph.D.]

Tata's experience in the business world made her a good fit for the FishStalkers program. Shi says Tata contributes valuable insight to the group as a mentor because most students approach the program from a purely academic viewpoint.

"Jasmine, like other OMSCS students, works full-time and attends the OMSCS program part-time. Her roles as a project manager and a software QA analyst allow her to contribute a unique perspective to the FishStalkers group," said Shi.

In addition to sharing her experience mentoring two OMSCS students this semester, Tata has helped Shi overcome some of the inherent challenges of long-distance collaboration. These include creating a sense of interpersonal connection among in-person and remote research team members.

Group meetings host a virtual link to enhance the online research experience. Every member provides progress updates during the sessions. The researchers also virtually check in and out of their research hours in a shared group chat and describe the work completed during their check-out.

"FishStalkers also runs a monthly lab-buddy program where a researcher is paired with a new buddy each month to schedule a 30-minute meeting to chat and learn about each other's work," said Shi.

"These strategies benefit OMSCS students in our group and provide a positive research environment for junior researchers. We seek to incorporate innovative strategies to create an accessible research environment for all students interested in participating in our research," said Shi.

FishStalkers has been such a success that Shi is expanding the model. This fall, Shi will work with OMSCS Executive Director  David Joyner  and OMSCS Associate Director of Research  Nick Lytle  to connect OMSCS students with interdisciplinary research projects in labs across campus.

"My role will be to establish relationships between data collectors and data analyzers to provide a service to non-technical labs across campus and a valuable research experience for OMSCS students," said Shi.

"We will be building from my existing work in image processing in the McGrath Lab and expanding to other labs with data analysis needs. I am very excited to have the experience of growing as a collaborator."

New machine learning algorithm promises advances in computing

Digital twin models may enhance future autonomous systems.

Systems controlled by next-generation computing algorithms could give rise to better and more efficient machine learning products, a new study suggests.

Using machine learning tools to create a digital twin, or a virtual copy, of an electronic circuit that exhibits chaotic behavior, researchers found that they were successful at predicting how it would behave and using that information to control it.

Many everyday devices, like thermostats and cruise control, utilize linear controllers -- which use simple rules to direct a system to a desired value. Thermostats, for example, employ such rules to determine how much to heat or cool a space based on the difference between the current and desired temperatures.

Yet because of how straightforward these algorithms are, they struggle to control systems that display complex behavior, like chaos.

As a result, advanced devices like self-driving cars and aircraft often rely on machine learning-based controllers, which use intricate networks to learn the optimal control algorithm needed to best operate. However, these algorithms have significant drawbacks, the most demanding of which is that they can be extremely challenging and computationally expensive to implement.

Now, having access to an efficient digital twin is likely to have a sweeping impact on how scientists develop future autonomous technologies, said Robert Kent, lead author of the study and a graduate student in physics at The Ohio State University.

"The problem with most machine learning-based controllers is that they use a lot of energy or power and they take a long time to evaluate," said Kent. "Developing traditional controllers for them has also been difficult because chaotic systems are extremely sensitive to small changes."

These issues, he said, are critical in situations where milliseconds can make a difference between life and death, such as when self-driving vehicles must decide to brake to prevent an accident.

The study was published recently in Nature Communications.

Compact enough to fit on an inexpensive computer chip capable of balancing on your fingertip and able to run without an internet connection, the team's digital twin was built to optimize a controller's efficiency and performance, which researchers found resulted in a reduction of power consumption. It achieves this quite easily, mainly because it was trained using a type of machine learning approach called reservoir computing.

"The great thing about the machine learning architecture we used is that it's very good at learning the behavior of systems that evolve in time," Kent said. "It's inspired by how connections spark in the human brain."

Although similarly sized computer chips have been used in devices like smart fridges, according to the study, this novel computing ability makes the new model especially well-equipped to handle dynamic systems such as self-driving vehicles as well as heart monitors, which must be able to quickly adapt to a patient's heartbeat.

"Big machine learning models have to consume lots of power to crunch data and come out with the right parameters, whereas our model and training is so extremely simple that you could have systems learning on the fly," he said.

To test this theory, researchers directed their model to complete complex control tasks and compared its results to those from previous control techniques. The study revealed that their approach achieved a higher accuracy at the tasks than its linear counterpart and is significantly less computationally complex than a previous machine learning-based controller.

"The increase in accuracy was pretty significant in some cases," said Kent. Though the outcome showed that their algorithm does require more energy than a linear controller to operate, this tradeoff means that when it is powered up, the team's model lasts longer and is considerably more efficient than current machine learning-based controllers on the market.

"People will find good use out of it just based on how efficient it is," Kent said. "You can implement it on pretty much any platform and it's very simple to understand." The algorithm was recently made available to scientists.

Outside of inspiring potential advances in engineering, there's also an equally important economic and environmental incentive for creating more power-friendly algorithms, said Kent.

As society becomes more dependent on computers and AI for nearly all aspects of daily life, demand for data centers is soaring, leading many experts to worry over digital systems' enormous power appetite and what future industries will need to do to keep up with it.

And because building these data centers as well as large-scale computing experiments can generate a large carbon footprint, scientists are looking for ways to curb carbon emissions from this technology.

To advance their results, future work will likely be steered toward training the model to explore other applications like quantum information processing, Kent said. In the meantime, he expects that these new elements will reach far into the scientific community.

"Not enough people know about these types of algorithms in the industry and engineering, and one of the big goals of this project is to get more people to learn about them," said Kent. "This work is a great first step toward reaching that potential."
