Eight stories that take place in a hotel through different decades compose this horror anthology, each directed by a different director. Violent deaths, ghosts, and possessed objects, this hotel has seen it all. Now is time to tell the tales that have taken place there.

The now-defunct Great White Horse Hotel serves as the scenario and conducting thread that embraces the different tales. Starting in 1936 with “Watching”, a story inspired by Charles Dickens’ visit to this hotel all the way to 2019 with “Devil Inside”, the great way of projecting the style of each epoch is one of the distinctive features that give this anthology its uniqueness. From the clothing to the decoration, some of which reminds us of trends that luckily didn’t stand the test of time, the attention to detail is top-notch. In this aspect, the lighting of “Watching” is noteworthy, where a candle is the only light source and creates a great atmosphere.

Except for “Ghost of a Chance”, the seventh story, the rest match each other well and they feel like part of the same story, not just like short films dragged together into an anthology by the hairs. In the case of the short mentioned above, I don’t know whose idea it was to include it in the anthology, but it completely breaks the atmospheric and somber tone from the rest. This story flees from horror and instead tries to be funny, which it fails to be and ends up being a pathetic effort.

The acting, in general, is acceptable, although some stories stand out for their over-the-top acting. A clear example is that of “Ghost of a Chance”, but we already established that this is the anthology’s black duckling. The second example belongs to the third story, “The Contraption”, where the acting is hard to deal with, and it is one of the weakest shorts. Its counterpart goes right before it in “40 Years”, where we see a charming story of a couple celebrating their 40th anniversary and whose acting is from the best of the movie.

haunted hotel movie review

Where “The Haunted Hotel” fails as a whole is that it lacks pure horror and prefers to remain in the line of paranormal themes with some suspense. This opens the doors to a more general public, but we horror fans certainly resent it. We have to settle for the atmosphere, the little suspense it offers and the many other positive things mentioned before.

“The Haunted Hotel” is an anthology made out of eight different short films based in an English hotel. Through the different decades, we see the ghost stories that occur there, which carry a good presence because of their style and atmosphere but where horror is completely absent. Instead, it prefers to timidly approach suspense and leave us wanting to see what could have come out of it if it had embraced the horror genre.

Hi, thanks for the review! We're glad you enjoyed some aspects of the film :) As you rightly say, it's definitely not a full-on horror as there's a mix of genres within the collection of stories. Makes it a tricky one for audience expectations, but hopefully everyone can like something in it!

The Haunted Hotel

By Bobby LePire | April 3, 2021

The Haunted Hotel is an anthology based around a haunted hotel throughout the centuries. The film opens up with Watching , directed by Jean Campbell Hogg and written by Daphne Fox. Charles Dickens (Reece Ritchie) rents a room at the grand hotel in Ipswich, Suffolk, England, to cover the 1836 local election. That evening, the author has an encounter with a ghost.

Ritchie does an excellent job as the then-up-and-coming writer, bringing a lot of energy to the role. The introduction of Pickwick (Richard Bates) works well, and Bates is entertaining. However, a put-upon lady is too rambunctious for the tone. Still, it is an enjoyable entryway into this world.

Forty Years jumps to 1985, with Tim (Hugh Fraser) renting a room for he and his wife’s, Julie (Judith Sharp), 40th wedding anniversary. Screenwriter Thomas Winward crafts lovingly realistic characters even if the story’s resolution is easy to figure out. Joshua Carver’s direction sublimely moves from the present to decades past as the happy couple dance the night away. But the true star of this segment, is well, the stars. Fraser and Sharp are fantastic together, heartbreakingly selling their years-long love.

“… an anthology based around a haunted hotel throughout the centuries .”

1924 is when Amy L. Feeley and Robbie Sunderland’s The Contraption takes place. Francesca (Angeline Hunt) sets up a spectrometer in her hotel room, alongside Willy Urlowe (Roderick Smith), in the hopes of connecting with a specter. Francesca soon learns that her contraption worked better than she could have ever imagined. Boasting amazing costume and production design, this is an engaging story with a fantastically frightful finale.

The Writer shifts to 1973, wherein famed author Peter Fearless (Geir Madland) checks into a “quiet room” to focus on writing a new story. However, he keeps hearing phantom noises. Will this be the book that does the writer in?

Amy Feeley wrote this entry, with Joshua Dickinson directing. The pacing is excellent, as the filmmakers quickly establish the author’s descent into madness. The sound design sells the creep factor well, and the direction effectively builds to its shocking conclusion.

Room 27B , written by Victoria Manthorpe and directed by Adam Collier, is about Betsy (Molly Scurrell), a young woman who feels stifled by 1952 society. To break free, she pretends to be married to Eddie (Andrew Hollingworth), so they can have a tryst at the hotel. But, the old spirits that roam the halls continually disturb them. Are the ghosts trying to get the couple to join them, or do they wish to save Betsy from a worse fate?

The Haunted Hotel (2023) Horror Movie Review

“The Haunted Hotel,” released in 2023, is a spine-tingling Indonesian horror film that delves into the depths of supernatural folklore and family secrets. Directed by Guntur Soeharjanto and penned by Riheam Junianti , the movie takes us to the eerie corridors of the Amber Mangun Hotel, where the past lingers and threatens the present.

The story revolves around sisters Raina and Fey, who inherit the dilapidated hotel from their father. Unaware of the dark history that shrouds the establishment, they soon find themselves entangled in a web of ghostly encounters and sinister revelations. The hotel, particularly a room on the third floor, becomes the epicenter of terror as the sisters grapple with a malevolent spirit that seeks vengeance.

Luna Maya delivers a compelling performance as Raina, embodying the character’s transition from skepticism to terror with finesse. Christian Sugiono , as Ardo, Raina’s ex-lover and an investigative figure, adds depth to the narrative, piecing together the puzzle of the hotel’s haunted history. The supporting cast, including Bianca Hello as Fey, also contribute significantly to the film’s ominous atmosphere.

The cinematography is a standout, capturing the claustrophobic and haunting ambiance of the hotel. The use of lighting and shadows effectively amplifies the suspense, making the viewers feel as if they are walking alongside the characters through the dimly lit hallways.

While the film scores high on atmospheric tension, it does fall into the trap of horror clichés. Some critics have pointed out that the movie relies heavily on traditional horror tropes, which may render it predictable for seasoned horror enthusiasts. However, for those new to the genre or fans of supernatural folklore, “The Haunted Hotel” offers a watchable and chilling experience.

The narrative is enriched by its cultural backdrop, drawing on Indonesian ghost stories and beliefs about the afterlife. This cultural layer adds a unique flavor to the film, distinguishing it from typical Western horror movies.

In conclusion, “The Haunted Hotel” is a film that will resonate with fans of supernatural horror and those intrigued by Indonesian folklore. It may not redefine the genre, but it certainly provides a hauntingly good time for those willing to check into the Amber Mangun Hotel. With an IMDb rating of 5.2/10 , it’s a middle-of-the-road offering that balances its shortcomings with a strong sense of place and cultural identity.

In the Nutshell

The Haunted Hotel” has some entertaining ghost stories with its share of creepy scenes and gore, but nothing that will stand out. If you are a fan of ghost stories, you might want to give it a try. [3 out of 5].

Guntur Soeharjanto made Suzzanna: Friday Kliwon Night and then directed this is like watching the empire falls down with my own eyes. The Haunted House [ Panggonan Wingit ] often teases us with what it potentially could have been. It lays out a promising premise but it never goes beyond the routine run-of-the-mill horror film that we have seen over and over. Though the film has the solid production design, cinematography and score that one can typically expect from this production house, but the story and its characters are dull, lifeless, generic, and really dumb. 110 mins felt like 3-hours long. The pacing is terrible, also surprisingly preachy, uninventive, uninspired, and nothing original from the screenplay. It's all screaming and Boo! and…

"Panggonan Wingit" aka "The Haunted Hotel" was quite generic, hyper-convenient and (sort of) "Ringu Indonesia Style". I think my enjoyment/opinion about this one is biased, so I'll just start with that "caution" :P :D

25+ years and the "Ringu" formula is still alive and kicking lol The plot was very much the "Ringu" (adjusted) formula in a different setting, plot and flavour. I actually enjoyed the plot, for what it was.

Luna Maya and Bianca Hello are "back" in this very Rocky Soraya production (couldn't fail noticing he was, at least, credited as the producer 3 different times lol).

The dynamic shooting was quite familiar/similar to Soraya's own movies. I thought this one was unnecessarily long (minus when Luna was…

Ternyata baru sampe rumah kerasa pusingnya.

i've only seen a few indonesian horror films in the past which I have brief memory of so I was going into this refreshed since it was newly released on netflix. I usually like giving these international films a go since they are quite rare to be on streaming here.

reviews on here aren't all crazy for it but I had a blast with it. it's insanely gory in all ways. although it gets repetitive during it's final act, it remains to be thematically fucked up and interesting throughout it's runtime with twists everywhere although it clearly isn't too original.

I decided to watch this movie on Netflix for today. I don't have any movies there that I just have to watch, so this one worked. It is a movie from Indonesia and I'm always willing to watch horror movies from other countries, so that helped me decide to watch this one as well. The story has sisters Raina and Fey finding out that their father left a hotel for them after he passed away. It was odd because their father never took them to the hotel or mentioned it. They find out that their grandparents are currently running the hotel but are happy that the sisters will soon be the owners. They give the sisters a warning to stay…

Angkat topi untuk konsistensi Hitmaker Studios dalam usahanya untuk melanggengkan kehadiran film-film horor berkualitas buruk (dan berpotensi merusak gendang terlinga para penontonnya) di layar bioskop Indonesia.

Hokier than a dance in the pokey where you have to stick something in and shake it all about.

Indonesian horror where anyone who sees the albino ghost dies in three days. The acting isn't good, the story is silly and the ending is ridiculous but there are 2 saving graces.

1) It's a nice change to have characters who pray to a Muslim God (and have their prayers answered) 2) There were 2 scenes of extreme gore that worked really well; if only the rest of the film had been like this.

If that's enough for you, then by all means...

Hitmaker not kamera muter muter challange (impossible challange)

The Best Horror Movies Set In Hotels

The Best Horror Movies Set In Hotels

Ranker Film

It's no secret that two of the most iconic horror movies of all time take place in hotels, but beyond Psycho and The Shining , what are some good scary movies that take place in hotels or motels? This list ranks the scariest hotel horror movies, with the help of your votes. The top spots are almost exclusively reserved for the aforementioned films, but there are plenty of other scary movies set in hotels for you to vote on below.

Although it didn't receive the highest accolades from critics, Identity is actually an entertaining motel horror film with a great twist at the end. Other examples of horror movies with hotels include 1408 , Motel Hell , The Innkeepers , and Eli Roth's Hostel .

Did we somehow miss the scariest hotel horror movie on the list? Add as many films to this poll as you want, as long as they are scary movies about motels, hotels, or hostels.

The Shining

The Shining

While Psycho often takes the cake as the best horror hotel movie ever created, The Shining is undoubtedly the scariest haunted hotel movie in existence. Stanley Kubrick brought The Overlook Hotel to life in painstaking and mind-altering glory, creating a building that on paper makes no sense, and when realized, becomes all the more terrifying. With the ghosts haunting its halls and danger seemingly around every corner, The Shining became so beloved and revered as a haunted hotel movie that to this very day over 50 years later, fans still desperately seek the opportunity to enter The Overlook Hotel.

Psycho

The quintessential horror movie set in a hotel, Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho is a masterpiece the likes of which the horror community rarely sees, and even 60 years later, the film still more than lives up to the hype. A tense, paranoid thriller that diverges into something far more wicked and sinister as time goes on, Psycho is inarguably one of the best horror hotel movies in history. The Bates Motel takes center stage and has grown to become one of the most beloved and recognizable locations in all of horror thanks to its masterful use in this film, becoming a character unto itself.

1408

Stephen King and haunted hotels go together like peanut butter and jelly, and in 1408 , he created one of the most terrifying and bizarre ever seen in film. Following a writer who checks into the Dolphin Hotel in order to debunk the supposed supernatural phenomena happening in the rooms, the film quickly delves into complete and utter madness and showcases all the trademarks of a stellar scary hotel movie. With a laundry list of rooms each more terrifying than the last, a creepy concierge, and a neverending feeling of claustrophobia, and if someone is always watching, room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel is one of the most underrated hotels in horror history.

Identity

When ten strangers find themselves isolated in the remote Nevada desert, they have no choice but to stay at The Four Aces motel, little do they know however that they just entered the playground of a deranged murderer looking to have some fun. While Identity may not have the hallmarks of the traditional supernatural horror hotel movie, it beautifully mixes elements of paranoia, crime, and slasher to create an experience horror fans won't soon forget. The Four Aces motel plays as the perfect backdrop for our poor victims, and by the time the credits roll, viewers will be utterly stunned at the secrets lying inside the walls of the motel.

Vacancy

Bringing to life the terrifying fear of being stranded at a creepy hotel after a car breaks down on a long road trip, Vacancy manages to up the stakes of terror by including a crazed and deranged killer who wants them to star in their next snuff film. Showcasing an incredibly creepy cast of staff and some of the most paranoid scenes in modern horror history, Vacancy and its ominous hotel shine in forcing viewers to feel a neverending sense of dread as the walls feel like they are closing in on not only our protagonists but on the viewers themselves. Tense, spooky, and frightfully fun, Vacancy is the blueprint for the best modern motel horror movie.

Hostel

The film that made travelers of foreign lands never, ever, ever want to stay in a hostel as long as they ever live, Eli Roth's Hostel brought to light a new form of terror, masochistically mixing the horror hotel movie with the splatter film subgenre to create a hybrid so grotesque and revolting, it's hard to watch . The titular hostel in the film is filmed in such a disturbing and uneasy way that it immediately sets viewers up for scare the moment they first see it, and by the time the film ends, even the thought of ever staying at a hostel will make even the most hardcore of horror fans shudder.

The Witches

The Witches

For more jaded viewers today, The Witches may seem like a silly kids' movie that lacks any real substance or true feeling of terror, but asking any 90s kid, they will undoubtedly say that the sight of these horrifying enchantresses still haunts them to this day. Taking place entirely in The Headland hotel, the film is a testament to how to get a younger audience into the horror genre by teasing them with a seemingly fun and exciting time and then scaring the bejeezus out of them. The film and its hotel may not be the scariest ever seen in film, but it is a beloved figure in horror that remains just as relevant today as it ever has.

The follow-up to the 1980 horror mega-hit The Shining , Doctor Sleep may have a far more epic and grander scale than its predecessor, but at its core, the film still boils down to that haunting Overlook Hotel and the ghosts that haunt Danny Torrance to this day. With the threat of the Overlook constantly hanging over this film from the second it starts to until the credits roll, Doctor Strange is a testament to ambiance and atmosphere, as viewers know the hotel is always just off in the distance. By the time the third act comes and we are back at the Overlook, it is more terrifying than our wildest imagination remmeber.

The Devil's Rejects

The sequel to House of 1000 Corpses and penultimate chapter in The Firefly trilogy, The Devil's Rejects is a vile, masochistic, and rancid film that follows the deranged and psychotic killers as they run amok on a local hotel and anyone who gets in their way. One of the most shocking and disturbing motel horror films ever made, The Devil's Rejects more than lives up to director Rob Zombies' self-proclaimed subgenre of “Hell-billy” by creating a film so uncomfortable and gruesome it is hard to watch. The hotel in the film plays second fiddle to the terrifying killers on display, but the gross, repelling, and stomach-churning location helps add to the ambiance of utter terror.

While the film surely isn't going to win any awards and is an absolute camp fest from start to finish, for hardcore horror fans, the mixing of the paranormal, slasher, and haunted hotel subgenres will work beautifully and offer an experience that fans won't ever forget.

Taking place in the almost titular Motel Hell-o, the film is a campy cult classic that pokes fun at all the tropes of the traditional haunted hotel horror films and plays them for absurd laughs. The hotel in the film almost feels as though it is coming to life in this wonderfully dark comedy. Satirical vibes infest this would-be slasher, mixing elements of Psycho and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to create a hellaciously fun and frightful time.

Don't Look Now

Don't Look Now

An incredible, powerful, and disheartening sense of dread lingers over Don't Look Now from the moment the central tragedy takes place until the bitter end, and that is all thanks to the masterful acting of Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie, and the direction of Nicolas Roeg. Taking place in the Hotel Gabrielli Sandwirth, the film feels less like a traditional haunted hotel horror movie and more like a neverending exercise in grief and mourning. While there are plenty of scares to be had, the film truly shines allowing characters to relish in the sadness presented in the hotel.

Hostel: Part II

Hostel: Part II

Just when audiences thought it was safe to go back to the hostels, Eli Roth returns to showcase that his game-changing splatter hotel horror movie was just the beginning. Ramping the violence and gore up to eleven, Hostel: Part II ditches any pretense of story, rhyme, or reason, and instead offers horror fans exactly what they want, a devastating, terrifying, and gruesome exploitation film that toes the line between reality and fiction. Some of the most intense and remarkable feats of horror are achieved in the titular hostel, which manages to come to life even more than in its predecessor, in stomach-churning glory.

Piercing

A visceral and haunting experience, Piercing follows a seemingly everyday man as he leaves his family for a business trip, but little do they know he is on his way to achieving a lifelong dream, committing the perfect murder. Piercing is a relatively unknown hotel horror movie, but one that thoroughly pushes the envelop throughout its entire 82 minutes runtime. Following the killer in a scary hotel movie is something incredibly unique, and the film plays with this impending sense of dread and chaos perfectly.

Bug

A film guaranteed to get under the skin of those who view it and make them look at every motel bed they ever sleep in sideways for the rest of their lives, Bug is a haunting, terrifying, and flat-out gross experience that will undoubtedly give those fearful of insects the willies. Taking place entirely in a rundown motel in the desert, the creepy crawlies make their presence known as they deliver some of the scariest scenes in any horror hotel movie of all time.

The Night

One of the more modern scary movies about hotels, The Night is a tour de force akin to The Shining that delves deep into the psychological downfall of a man trapped in a hotel with beings from beyond looking to poison his mind. A technical marvel, what The Night lacks in story and acting abilities it more than makes up for with fascinating directorial work, haunting atmosphere, and fun frights. While it may feel a bit too familiar to those that came before it, Kourosh Ahari's directorial debut showed he knows how to make a solid haunted hotel movie.

Summer is slowly but surely approaching, and you know what that means: A slew of exciting grand openings and shocking business closures are set to rock the Eastern Shore.

Here's what's new in the business world this week.

Ghoulish Things

720 S Atlantic Ave

Ghoulish Things, an extension of Trimper's Haunted House , is now open for business at 720 S Atlantic Ave. on Ocean City's historic Boardwalk. The gift shop offers unique Trimper's Haunted House merchandise. Artifacts of dark ride industrialist Bill Tracy are also on display.

Trimper's Haunted House was built in 1964 by Granville Trimper and designed by Bill Tracy. The building welcomed a two-story expansion in 1988. The popular oceanfront attraction, which offers a thrilling ride through the dark, has been welcoming guests for generations.

200 94th St

Roses Discount Store served the Ocean City community for nearly 45 years. The store was known for offering an array of discounted items, including food, clothing, cleaning products, beach gear and much more.

The recent closure comes after the  Ocean City Planning Commission met on March 5  to discuss preliminary plans to subdivide the 17-acre mall property into four separate parcels for future redevelopment.

The property, known as the Ocean Plaza Mall, is home to the former Roses Discount Store and its three neighboring businesses: ACME Supermarket, Blue Fish Restaurant and Coffee Beanery. According to the March 5 meeting, the first step will be to demolish Roses Discount Store, with a brand-new ACME Supermarket to be built in its place.
