4 Father’s Day Sermon Ideas Every Christian Can Apply

Fathers play a critical role in the lives of their children. They are called to be teachers (Prov 1:8; 22:6; Eph 6:4), providers (1 Tim 5:8), disciplinarians (Prov 13:24), and living examples of God (2 Cor 3:2–3). It’s a tall order from the greatest Father of them all.

Though Father’s Day is a great day to teach about fatherhood in the Bible, it’s also the perfect opportunity to connect your congregation with biblical examples of fatherhood everyone can learn from.

Here are four Father’s Day sermon ideas that may spark some ideas.

1. The model of a perfect father

Key passage: Luke 15:11–32

Often, preaching and teaching about the prodigal son focuses on, well, the prodigal son. 

But there’s so much more to the story, as Roger Campbell points out in Preach for a Year : 

• The father here was chosen to illustrate our heavenly Father
• He had two sons who were prodigals, not just one
• Because the Father was what he was, the prodigal became what he should be

Campbell’s sermon outline explains how the father was approachable, affectionate, loving despite failures, and walked with God—and his son knew it.

The main points

While fathers have a model in Luke 15, there’s more to take away. Every Christian can be comforted because our heavenly Father is as loving and forgiving as the one in Luke 15. Just as he loved and accepted his prodigal son, he will love and accept us when we come to him for forgiveness.

2. A righteous man surrounded by wickedness

Key verse: “But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.” (Gen 6:8)

The story of Noah is one of the most familiar in the Bible. The earth and all the people in it had become corrupt—wickedness had taken over, the earth was “filled with violence,” and the people whom God created were hardened toward him (Gen 6:5, 11)—grieving him to the point that he “regretted that he had made man on the earth” (v. 6).

So, God determined to “make an end of all flesh” and “destroy them with the earth” (vv. 12–13). At God’s command, Noah sets forth to build a ship of a massive capacity according to God’s specifications. He gathered the materials. Built the boat. Loaded the animals. Stocked the ship with food and supplies. Onlookers thought he had lost his mind.

But that’s the flannelgraph version of the story. 

There’s a powerful lesson in the story of Noah about the measure of a man (or woman) of God we would do well to pay attention to.

God chose Noah out of all the people of the earth because he knew the condition of Noah’s heart. Tucked away among verses about wickedness and coming destruction, Scripture says that “Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord” (Gen 6:8). Later in Genesis 7:1, God says he has “seen that [Noah is] righteous before me in this generation.” Noah was just, blameless among the people of his time, and “walked with God” (Gen 6:9). In short, Noah was faithful.

By faith he:

• Trusted in God’s warning of what was ahead
• Protected his family
• Prepared the ark

And because of his obedience, God saved him and seven others (his wife and three sons and their wives). From that small crew, God repopulated the earth.

Centuries later, the writer of Hebrews would highlight Noah’s character: “By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith” (Heb 11:7).

Noah kept his eyes on God despite the evil and depravity around him. He wasn’t a perfect man, by any means, but he protected his family, remained faithful to his Creator, and carried out what God tasked him to do. Yes, the story of Noah’s ark makes for a fun children’s story—but it carries a profound lesson about how one person’s steadfast faith can impact generations.

The main point

God blesses and protects those who listen to and obey God.

3. An earthly father with a divine task

Key verse: “And her husband Joseph, since he was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.” (Matt 1:19 NASB)

Joseph is known as the committed man betrothed to Mary and father to the child Jesus, who was not biologically his (Matt 1:18). The Bible doesn’t offer much information about Joseph—a few references merely.

But reading between the lines, Joseph possesses a character trait we often miss. Consider what we do know.

i. He obeyed God unswervingly

Several times Joseph received visits from the angel of the Lord in dreams, who instructed him to do something difficult. He’s commanded to stay with Mary, pregnant with a child not his own, and later instructed to flee with her and the child to Egypt. Note his steadfast obedience:

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. (Matt 1:22–25, emphasis added)

Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt. (Matt 2:13–14, emphasis added)

A few years later (see Matt 1:19), Joseph experienced two more dreams—one letting him know it was safe to leave Egypt (vv. 19–21) and another instructing him where to settle: in the Galilee (v. 22). All four times he obeyed without question.

ii. He was a righteous man—despite facing humiliation among his own people

Though he did not intend to stay with Mary after learning of her pregnancy, his plan to send her away stemmed from a compassionate heart that wanted to protect her. Notice Matthew 1:19 tells us that:

Joseph her husband, 1 being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. (Matt 1:19 NASB)

The CEB translation says Joseph didn’t want to “humiliate” her and so decided to “call off their engagement quietly.” His righteousness was regarding his observance of the law (Deut 22:13–31; see also Luke 1:6), and though there are a few ways this verse could be interpreted, some commentators believe Joseph—as a good Torah-observant Jew—was within his rights to make her a public disgrace. (By law, he could legally divorce her for her “indecency” [Deut 24:1]).

Yet Joseph chose to protect her reputation.

iii. He loved Jesus

Though the Bible never says this directly, consider the familiar story in Luke 2:47–50. Mary and Joseph had started their return home to Nazareth from Jerusalem after Passover but soon realized they had lost track of Jesus. They returned to Jerusalem and found him sitting among the teachers in the temple, listening and asking questions (v. 46). Mary says: “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you in great distress” (v. 48)—to which Jesus responds: “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” (v. 49).

Jesus corrects Mary and refers to his true Father, a critical point in the story. But we mustn’t miss the deep pain Joseph experienced when he couldn’t find the adopted Son God had entrusted to him.

Though it’s likely Joseph didn’t live long enough to see Jesus’ public ministry (this is the last time the Bible mentions Joseph, and Scripture doesn’t record anything to indicate otherwise), God chose this man of integrity to be the earthly father to his Son, Jesus—a behind-the-scenes yet mountainous task and one that Joseph embraced.

God honors integrity.

4. A bold father-in-law who gave wise counsel

Key verse: “What you are doing is not good. You and the people with you will certainly wear yourselves out, for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to do it alone.” (Exod 18:17–18)

Jethro is one of those characters in the Bible we tend to gloss over—and yet his involvement in his son-in-law’s life and in the life of the nation of Israel—was paramount.

The Israelites were camped below Mount Sinai, sustained on daily portions of quail and manna. Moses’s father-in-law and priest of Midian, Jethro, observed Moses’s non-stop daily activities—judging disputes between his people from morning to night without delegating responsibilities. There were so many disgruntled people that Scripture says “the people stood around Moses from morning till evening” (v. 13). Just imagine the chaos!

Jethro watched all this with concern and asked: “Why are you doing this? Why are you the only judge? And why do people come to you all day?” (v. 14), to which Moses replied, “The people come to me to inquire of God; when they have a dispute, they come to me and I decide between one person and another, and I make them know the statutes of God and his laws” (vv. 15–16).

Moses was headed for burnout, and Jethro couldn’t stand by and watch. He said:

What you are doing is not good. You and the people with you will certainly wear yourselves out, for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to do it alone. Now obey my voice; I will give you advice, and God be with you! You shall represent the people before God and bring their cases to God, and you shall warn them about the statutes and the laws, and make them know the way in which they must walk and what they must do. Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens. And let them judge the people at all times. Every great matter they shall bring to you, but any small matter they shall decide themselves. So it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you. If you do this, God will direct you, you will be able to endure, and all this people also will go to their place in peace. (Exod 18:17–23)

So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said. (v. 24)

Moses listens to God’s wisdom (mediated through Jethro—an outsider to Israel), chooses wise elders from among the fledgling nation, and establishes them as leaders (or “judges”) over the people. They hear the minor disputes, while Moses decides only the most critical cases—and God’s redemptive work for Israel expanded into the work of justice among his people.

The story of Jethro and Moses is a beautiful example of God’s intention for the body working together, each person using the gifts God has given, as Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 12. God has “so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another” (vv. 24–25).

God gives people different responsibilities as part of the body to protect the individual from burnout and accomplish the work needed for his plan to progress.

Fresh Ideas For A Father’s Day Service In Your Small Church

A Father’s Day Service is a great way to appreciate the dads in you congregation and community.

Have you ever wondered how we started celebrating Father’s Day in the United States?  It is generally credited to a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington. Sonora’s father, a Civil War veteran, had to raise her and her five siblings after their mother died in childbirth. She was inspired to create it after hearing a sermon honoring Mothers, on Mother’s Day in 1909. She thought that the sacrifice and dedication of fathers needed to be appreciated too.

Ms. Dodd spread the word to local churches and soon many religious leaders agreed and supported the idea as well. On Sunday, June 19, 1910, the first official Father’s Day was celebrated by several churches. It was not until 1972, that it became a national holiday.  Pres. Richard Nixon signed legislation officially designating the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day in the United States. Interestingly, many predominantly Catholic countries in Europe and Latin America had already been celebrating and honoring Fathers for years. They did this as part of their St. Joseph’s Day feast and holiday, which is always observed on March 19th.

So how can our small churches join in the celebration and use it as a time to connect with our church families, as well as with our communities?

A Father’s Day Service For Your Small Church

Although Father’s Day is not a ‘religious’ holiday it does provide your small church with the opportunity to connect your church family and guests to the wonderful truth that we have a perfect Heavenly Father. We know and must be sensitive to the fact that not everyone has a father figure in their life and some may have bad experiences with an earthly father.

This is where the church can step in and share the love and hope that lies in having a relationship with God, the perfect Father; who never leaves us or forsakes us, who is always faithful and always keeps His promises. This is the very relationship that so many people are looking for in their lives. Take this opportunity to show them how much God desires to bring them into His own family!

Before, During, And After The Father’s Day Service

We are sharing several ideas for you to include some form of observance to honor and celebrate fathers in your small churches. It can be as simple as a special time of food or snacks before your service, including a time during the service for speaking to fathers and applauding godly male influence in the lives of our children, or it could be a celebration following the service where your entire church family gathers together for fellowship and fun.

All of these ideas have the core element of connection and caring for the local family. Honoring godly fathers and father figures encourages men as they see that the church is there to support and value them. It also gives our children in the small church a chance to see how the church body works together and appreciates each part of the church family.

Before The Church Service:

• Special Treats – These are always a way to a dad’s heart, and they start your Father’s Day service off with a celebratory atmosphere. Ask your hospitality team to put this together and involve the children in your small church in setting up, serving, and cleaning up as well!
• Doughnuts For Dad – Display this in the lobby with coffee too, of course! Make or purchase a doughnut peg board to display them. This is trendy right now. See if a local coffee shop or grocery store would donate the doughnuts to your small church! Be sure to put up a sign to show who the donors were.
• Pancakes With Pop – This is a great way to add in a breakfast before your Father’s Day service. You can make this an all-church event or if you want to do it on a smaller scale, just do it for kids and their father/grandfather/uncle or special father figure. You could even invite some of the women in your church to host, cook, and serve.
• Bacon Buffet – Get your creative cooks together at your small church and brainstorm, then prepare unique items to put on a Bacon Buffet for your fathers. Have fun items that will strike up plenty of conversation and smiles like bacon pops, bacon muffins, bagels with bacon jam, or candied bacon pieces. Have some fun napkins and plates, and don’t forget a fun sign !
• Welcoming Ways – Start the day off at your church with a different flare. This will let the Dads know that this is a special day to celebrate with them! Invite the kids in your small church to be special greeters at the doors. Have some of the younger ones make signs that say ’Happy Father’s Day’. This is a VIP welcome for sure! You could even have a special pin, boutonniere, or sticker for all the fathers and father figures to wear. 

During The Church Service:

Inviting the kids in your small church to be involved in the Father’s Day service is a wonderful gift for the Fathers to see. You could have them do a special musical number together as a group or have a dad and kid sing or play instruments for a special number. This would be a wonderful memory for everyone! Ask teens or children to do a reading or a poem about Dads. Maybe your pastor could read scripture passages that would tie into the Father’s Day service.

Videotape some of the kids of all ages in your church answering one of the following questions:

• What’s the best activity that you do/or have done with your Dad?
• What do you think is your Dad’s best talent?
• If you could give your Dad any gift in the world (no cost of course) what would it be?
• What’s the most important thing that your Dad has taught you?

You can then show the video at the beginning of your Father’s Day service. This idea gives you the opportunity to use church family members who are good with audio & video. Teens would be great at this!

Another great idea is to host a DAD Panel. This would be a panel of D ifferent- A ged D ads from your church. During this panel, your pastor will interview the dads during the service and incorporate the questions/answers into their message for the day. Be sure to send the dads the questions prior to the service so they have time to think of concise answers. 

Additionally, you could ask different fathers to share testimonies of how God has directed and guided them in the path of being a father. Have the pastor close the Father’s Day service with a message about God, our heavenly Father, and the example He is to us.

After the Church Service:

• Making Memories That Last – Create a photo booth area for families to grab a picture. It allows for a fun chance to create a lasting memory. It also encourages people to hang out a bit and connect with one another as they wait for their turn.
• Gifts For Fathers – Think outside the box. Be creative with your Father’s Day gifts at your small church. Check out our Facebook group , people have shared wonderful ideas. Gifts are a great token to remember the day, but they also convey love and appreciation from your church to the fathers.
• Putting For Prizes Contest – Invite the dads to participate in a putting contest and give away some fun prizes for various challenges: Longest putt, most accurate, best style, etc.
• Dunk Your Dad – Rent a dunk tank where dads sit on the ‘hot seat’ and kids get to throw balls to see if they can dunk the target.
• Ice Cream Truck – Contact a local ice cream or snow cone truck to see if they will come to your church. Have the church cover the costs for the dads, others pay on their own.

These fun activities spark intergenerational connections. It’s a time for dads to have relaxing family time and food provided and a time for your small church to show their love and support for families.

A Special Service Full Of Love

This Father’s Day service is very different and may not be for everyone. Consider dedicating a portion of your Father’s Day service to Missing My Dad. It can provide a meaningful opportunity for individuals to remember and honor their fathers who are not with them whether they live at a distance, are in the military and deployed overseas, or have passed away. Adding some of the activities below could enhance this service and show empathy to your church community: 

• A Wall of Fathers Fame – Ask participants to bring in a photo of their father to display on a nicely decorated table. Provide small cards for them to write their name & the name of their father.
• Miss You Board – Have a brightly decorated bulletin board area with the question posted: What do you miss about your dad ? Provide post-it notes and pens for guests to write and post their answers.
• Memorial Keepsakes – Create or purchase some memorial keepsakes that participants can take home with them, such as cards with quotes or poems about fathers, or a Bible verse about our Heavenly Father.

This version of a Father’s Day service is similar to that of a Blue Christmas service, where grieving people are seen and allowed a space to grieve and honor missed loved ones during the holidays. This is a great opportunity for your church to create a supportive environment, where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and respected. I am sure that the commercialism of this holiday is probably a far cry from what Sonora Dodd had in mind when she came up with the idea of Father’s Day. Ideas & Themes

Our father in heaven service.

Structure your Father’s day service by walking through the Lord’s Prayer.  You can pick some themes from the prayer for different sections in your service.

• “Hallowed be Your name” – pick some songs about God’s holiness, his worth, etc.
• “Give us this day…” – Spend time in prayer for various needs.  Give thanks for the ways in which God provides.
• “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those…” – This sets up nicely for a time of confession as well as reflection on who we might need to forgive in our lives.
• “For thine is the Kingdom…” – Explore the ways in which we see God’s kingdom on earth and how we participate in seeing God’s kingdom coming on earth.

Prodigal Son Story & Dealing With Our Shame

At it’s crux, the prodigal son is less about the specific ways in which he failed, but more in the fact that he was extremely self aware of ‘missing the mark’ and his shame consumed his thoughts and actions.  Why else does a Son ask to go work as a slave if he hasn’t come to a point in his mind where he thinks very little of himself.  The pertinent question then is,  where in our lives do we miss the mark and then allow shame to separate or hinder our relationship with God.   (Note that often it’s the shame that can affect our relationship with God more profoundly then the actual failure we’ve experienced.)

Help the congregation reflect on where they are feeling shame and find a way to remind them that God the father welcomes them home with open arms.

A Father Who Disciplines

“Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?”  Hebrews 12:7

It’s interesting to explore and try to pinpoint the ways God is leading, coaching, and disciplining us to help us live more whole lives.

A Father Who Comforts

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort…” 2 Corinthians 1:3

Explore with the congregation the areas of life where we need God’s comfort.  So often we ignore hardship and fail to create space for lament.  Your Father’s day service might be just the place to create some space for lament and help people reflect on how God their heavenly Father can bring them comfort.

A Father Who Mentors

Find an example of someone in your congregation who has learned or been taught by their father.  For example my Dad taught me how to cut grass and run a lawn-care business.  Use the story and the example to transition into how God teaches and mentors us or how we can disciple and mentor one another.

Pray for Fathers

Spend time with a dedicated prayer for Fathers.  Being a dad isn’t easy and  most Dad’s are really trying their best.  I think every Dad out there would appreciate prayer that they can continue to be loving, caring, supportive, providing, and demonstrating to their kids what it means to be a follower of Christ… etc.

Father’s Share Their Story

Pick 3 Father’s of various ages in your congregation and have them briefly share in a 5 -10 minutes what they have learned being a Father and what it’s taught them about their relationship with God.

While we certainly want to help people have a meaningful experience of God as Father – Father’s day can also be a fun time to exploit the typical Father stereotypes and have a little fun.

Lazy-boy Sermon

Have someone bring a lazy-boy and set it up in the sanctuary.  Then nominate either the oldest father or youngest father to come and listen to the sermon while relaxing in the lazy boy.

Dad related snacks

Dad’s cookies, or Dad’s Root beer are always a staple, along with pretty much any other type of chocolate or candy.  Having kids hand them out at the end of a service is an added bonus.

‍ Father’s Day provides the church with a unique opportunity to honor the ideals of fatherhood that God prescribes for male family men.

Churches can sometimes get confused about the right way to carry out a Father’s Day celebration. On the one hand, services that double down too much on the “manliness” optics can feel a little tacky. On the other hand, services that don’t celebrate fathers at all can alienate the fathers and families in the audience who do want to emphasize the importance and value of fatherhood in the family.

In this article, we will lay out eight guidelines to help your church perfectly execute Father’s Day so that families have the best experience on Sunday.

1. Know what fatherhood is (and ought to be)

Fatherhood is when a man takes responsibility for his household and loves his children by providing for them, caring for them, and teaching them to be law-abiding and responsible adults.

This may sound like a low bar to some, but it requires an ever-vigilant effort by men, to whom their children look to for moral guidance, physical sustenance, and monetary assistance even into late adolescence.

It’s best to be very clear about what fatherhood is so that when you honor fathers, you can name specific virtues that these men exemplify (and strive to exemplify), as well as the social goods the attainment of these virtues produce.

It’s easy to celebrate “fatherhood” when you never explain exactly what it is, or only use generic examples of things fathers have done.

But it’s easier (and more honorable) to honor fathers when they are honored for specific reasons related to the well-being of their wife and children, as well as the well-being of the church in which they raise their families.

2. Recognize that fatherhood is surrounded by grief

Many church members face the tragedy of evil infiltrated through the angle of fatherhood in their lives.

This is as unfortunate as it is common.

Fathers have died.

Fathers have lost children.

Fathers have been abusers.

Fathers have left, without a note or a call.

Fathers have gone off and started second families.

For different reasons, some men have not been able to have children.

These are tales as old as time.

To celebrate fatherhood without acknowledging its opposite is to bring a naive sense of surrealism to fatherhood, which doesn’t celebrate the sacrifice other fathers make.

When a dad  sticks around and treats his wife and kids well, things go well.

When he doesn’t, the wound is often unspeakably deep.

Recognize this as part of your recognition of fathers.

3. Set aside a time to honor fathers specifically

While it may seem like enough to preach on fatherhood or acknowledge that it’s Father’s Day in your church, it is not sufficient merely to mention these things.

You don’t have to call out every single dad  by name (in a growing church, this is not feasible).

Instead, take a moment to honor fathers in your congregation by thanking them for the sacrifices they make, embellishing on the social and communal good their sacrifices yield for the church and families in the church, and the value of continuing to pursue the attainment of the virtues of fatherhood as they continue to grow up into their roles, young and old.

Setting aside a specific time like this enables the church as a whole to turn to the fathers with them and have a special moment giving thanks for good male role models in their lives.For some this might be their first time celebrating this holiday, so it is important to make them feel special.

One of the best times to do this in your church service is during your church announcements . By setting aside a few moments, you can take a moment to acknowledge the grief some are experiencing, and to honor the fathers in your church who have been faithful to pursue the ideals of fatherhood.

4. Coordinate gift boxes for fathers

It’s not always easy to buy a gift for dads.

In order to help facilitate this, the church can provide an opportunity for members and visitors to register and pay for a special gift for the dad or fatherly figure they bring to church, which they can pick up at your front desk or kiosk.

This box can include any kind of manly items—for example, something with leather, or that is useful, or a book, or a particularly manly movie.

Whatever the box includes, it should also include a special note to the dad  to whom it is given, which serves as a card.

By providing this service, the church becomes the go-to place for families in the church to express affection to their families on key occasions, which boosts engagement.

If the box is good (and it is very important that the box be good), participants will want to sign up for other holidays, such as Christmas, Mother’s Day, and the like.

5. Host a picnic

Men love food.

It’s that simple.

If you cook good, hearty, meaty food, men will show up.

Food is the #1 way to incentivize a male attendance at an event.

To get a family to participate, hype this event leading up to the day  so that families register (both for gift boxes and for the picnic event). For what it’s worth, we make church events and registration for churches easy like a piece of cake.

You can plan an event that is big and fun enough that families can have small get-togethers at home afterward to reflect on personal stories and show appreciation for their fathers at home.

This picnic should have food, games, and a photographer taking pictures. This is a great way to capture the moment, and share photos on social media

6. Preach on fatherhood

This day  is a great opportunity to preach on Fatherhood.

Here is a list of 36 bible verses and 8 themes on fatherhood in the Bible .

Use this as a starting point to begin thinking about themes and passages on which you could preach for Father’s Day.

One of the easiest ways to preach on fatherhood is to preach about the fatherhood of the Lord .

As a dad , God helps us in many ways.

He  is merciful:

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Peter 1:3).

He  disciplines:

“Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all” (Hebrews 12:7-8).

He  sacrifices:

“For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith” (Romans 3:22-25).

He  instructs:

“For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children,  encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory” (1 Thess. 2:11-12).

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him” (John 3:16-17).

Reflecting these qualities in earthly fatherhood is imperative for a healthy church, not only because it produces healthy families, but because it reflects the wisdom and design of our loving heavenly Father.

7. Don’t preach yourself as the exemplary fatherly figure

We’ve all heard the sermon where the preacher makes himself out to be a hero.

“A good father is patient with his kids. For example, my kids are so unruly! And I’m very patient with them. Be like that!”

You might be patient with your kids, but construing yourself as the hero will turn off your audience to your message.

Instead, be self-deprecating—not distractingly self-deprecating, but make yourself out as the one who needs patience.

Explain how a fatherly figure in your own life exemplified the fatherly virtues to produce a personal, psychological, social, or spiritual good in you.

Over to you

Acknowledging fathers is not too complicated.

Just follow these simple 8 steps:

• Know what fatherhood is (and ought to be)
• Set aside a time to honor fathers specifically
• Coordinate gift boxes for fathers
• Make the service truly masculine
• Host a picnic
• Preach on fatherhood
• Recognize that fatherhood is surrounded by grief for many
• Don’t preach yourself as the exemplary fatherly figure

If you follow these steps, your congregation will feel very grateful that you took a lot of the pressure off today  by making plans at the church to celebrate fathers in a uniquely masculine way. Furthermore, fathers will feel appreciated, and the church as a whole will feel a greater sense of buy-in to the spiritual good your church is producing for families. Make sure to try out these steps to have a great and meaningful sermon.

Dad-tastic Celebration: 5 Fun Ideas to Bring Families to Church on Father’s Day!

Father’s Day is an important day for families; It’s a day to celebrate and honor the contributions of fathers and father-figures in our lives. But for years, church attendance hasn’t been high on the list of things to do on Father’s Day. But with a little creativity, you can plan a weekend that Dads and their families will engage with and enjoy! 

First, as with Mother’s Day, it’s a good idea to think about the people in your church who may not be able to have children, who have lost children or people who do not have an active Father in their lives. Don’t limit attendance/participation – make sure it’s clear that any Father Figure can be included. 

• Father-Child Sports Day: Organize a sports day event where fathers and their children can participate in various games and competitions. This event will not only create a bonding experience but also a chance to have fun and connect with other families.
• Father-Child Craft Workshop: Set up a craft workshop where fathers and their children can make something special together, such as a wooden birdhouse or a picture frame. This activity promotes teamwork and creativity while giving fathers a chance to bond with their children.
• Family Movie Night : Host a movie night where families can watch a family-friendly film together. You could provide popcorn, drinks, and snacks and make it a relaxed and fun evening for all. 
• Father’s Day Weekend Prayer Breakfast: Host a prayer breakfast where fathers can come together to pray for their families and other fathers in the community. Invite local city councilmen, school superintendents/teachers or first responders to attend too. Provide an opportunity for fathers to share their experiences and concerns and pray for one another. You could also invite a guest speaker to share about fatherhood from a biblical perspective.
• Father’s Day BBQ: No one wants to cook on a holiday, so recruit your youth group and a team of volunteers to grill lunch after church on Sunday. Set up tables and chairs for families to eat together and spend time making friends.

Once you have your event planned out, don’t forget to spread the word to your whole community. Here are a few tips and tools you can put to use: 

• Personalized Invitations

Ask your congregation to invite their neighbors to your event or church service. Provide them with small invitations they can hand out easily. 

• Outdoor Banners and Signs

Display a large custom banner outside your church in the week leading up to Father’s Day. Make sure you include your event day and time or a website people can visit to learn more. Add some Yard Signs along your driveway to make visitors feel more welcome! 

• Direct Mail

Send invitations to the homes around your church inviting families to come enjoy your event or services. If you are offering a free gift to Fathers, promote that on the postcard. 

• Social Media Ads

Don’t forget the power of social media, especially to younger families. Run a social media ad that will reach the people in your community with an invitation to your Father’s Day activities! 

In conclusion, Father’s Day is a special day that brings families together. As a church leader it’s important to create an inviting and welcoming environment that encourages families to come together and celebrate this special day. By using these creative ideas, you can reach out to families and make their experience at your church a memorable one.
