You can do so by accessing the Microsoft Copilot GPT Builder at copilot.microsoft.com and signing in using your Microsoft account (such as outlook.com).

Follow the setup steps included there to get started building your custom GPT. Because it is a GPT environment, you essentially need only to input the text parameters of your chatbot to begin training it. There are also instructions on how to edit the GPT, if needed. For the best results, complete the steps in the Microsoft Edge browser.

Because Copilot Pro is a paid service, it benefits from OpenAI’s latest DALL-E 3 image model, which can generate images from more elaborate text descriptions or generate from other images. It also has upgraded editing abilities. Much of the image generation for the brand’s AI subscription service takes place within the Microsoft Designer tool.

Typically, you must have a separate Microsoft 365 subscription to access Microsoft Copilot Pro features in tandem with the apps of that service on PCs. However, to access the features without having to invest in a Microsoft 365 subscription, you can use Microsoft 365 apps through the web apps at no extra cost.

Creating presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint is a popular productivity option in the Microsoft 365 suite. Adding Copilot Pro makes the function as simple as typing a sentence. Once you’re in PowerPoint, you go to the Home tab to open the drop-down menu. This reveals the Copilot button in the upper-right corner. Click it to open the Copilot menu on the right side of the PowerPoint window.

Click Create a Presentation, type your prompt, and it will begin to generate the slides of your presentation. You can add a slide, ask questions prompts, and edit the text of your prompt to improve your presentation. You also have access to the Microsoft Designer tab in the drop-down menu, which gives you creative options for your slide within PowerPoint, since you can’t use prompts to make creative edits within Copilot. There is also the Copilot Labs section for generating ideas.

Excel is an extremely useful app for professionals who need to crunch numbers and simplify statistics. Copilot Pro can calculate, analyze, and present your figures and graphs in a manner that is easy to decipher. Once in Excel, you can access the Copilot button in the upper-right corner of the drop-down menu. If you are using Excel online, you may see a notice that says it only works with Excel table, but all of the AI functionalities are actually still intact.

If you have a file with some figures, you can highlight some text and Copilot Pro will give you some prompt ideas (such as show formula suggestions, highlight filter, sort data, and bold the first column) that you can select and will make up the entirety of your prompt once you’re done. These details will not only be the information but the look and feel of your results.

Select Ask for Insights and Excel will generate the tables and graphs with all of your data laid out. Select another insight or All insights for a more complete look at your information. Alternatively, you can enter a prompt in Copilot Pro with the parameters you desire.

Word is one of the most used apps in the Microsoft 365 suite and Copilot Pro introduces several automated features into the word processors. Before even launching Copilot Pro within Microsoft Pro, you can highlight blocks of text within Word and a Copilot icon will appear on the left of the text, indicating that it can be edited by the chatbot. Right-click the highlighted text with your mouse and you can select the options, rewrite with Copilot, or visualize as a table. It will do those functions in the text area without having to execute a prompt.

You can also access the Copilot button in the upper-right corner of the drop-down menu and use it whether you have a blank document or you’re working with an existing document.

You can type your prompt directly into Copilot Pro to generate whatever result you need, or you can get assistance via a host of assistant tabs and quick options, including write about, ask a question, and summarize this document. Summarize this document, for example, will roll out text in a bullet point format and pull credits from the source document that you can refer back to later. For further assistance in prompt generation, you can select more prompts and access Copilot Labs.

The AI bots are going nuts again. Microsoft Copilot -- a rebranded version of Bing Chat -- is getting stuck in some old ways by providing strange, uncanny, and sometimes downright unsettling responses. And it all has to do with emojis.

A post on the ChatGPT subreddit is currently making the rounds with a specific prompt about emojis. The post itself, as well as the hundreds of comments below, show different variations of Copilot providing unhinged responses to the prompt. I assumed they were fake -- it wouldn't be the first time we've seen similar photos -- so imagine my surprise when the prompt produced similarly unsettling responses for me.

Over the past year, we’ve made incredible progress in enhancing the quality of our generative media technologies. We’ve been working closely with the creative community to explore how generative AI can best support the creative process, and to make sure our AI tools are as useful as possible at each stage.

Today, we’re introducing Veo , our latest and most advanced video generation model, and Imagen 3 , our highest quality text-to-image model yet.

We’re also sharing some of our recent collaborations with filmmaker Donald Glover and his creative studio, Gilga , and new demo recordings being released by artists Wyclef Jean , Marc Rebillet and songwriter Justin Tranter , made with help from our Music AI Sandbox.

Veo: our most capable video generation model

Veo generates high-quality 1080p resolution videos in a wide range of cinematic and visual styles that can go beyond a minute. With an advanced understanding of natural language and visual semantics, it generates video that closely represents a user’s creative vision — accurately capturing a prompt’s tone and rendering details in longer prompts.

The model provides an unprecedented level of creative control, and understands cinematic terms like “timelapse” or “aerial shots of a landscape”. Veo creates footage that’s consistent and coherent, so people, animals and objects move realistically throughout shots.

To discover how Veo can best support the storyteller’s creative process, we’re inviting a range of filmmakers and creators to experiment with the model. These collaborations also help us improve the way we design, build and deploy our technologies to make sure creators have a voice in how they’re developed.

Here's a preview of our work with filmmaker Donald Glover and his creative studio, Gilga , who experimented with Veo for a film project.

Veo builds upon years of our generative video model work, including Generative Query Network (GQN), DVD-GAN , Imagen-Video , Phenaki , WALT , VideoPoet and Lumiere — combining architecture, scaling laws and other novel techniques to improve quality and output resolution.

With Veo, we’ve improved techniques for how the model learns to understand what's in a video, renders high-definition images, simulates the physics of our world and more. These learnings will fuel advances across our AI research and enable us to build even more useful products that help people interact and communicate in new ways.

Starting today, Veo is available to select creators in private preview in VideoFX by joining our waitlist . In the future, we’ll also bring some of Veo’s capabilities to YouTube Shorts and other products.

Imagen 3: our highest quality text-to-image model

Over the last year, we’ve made incredible progress improving the quality and fidelity of our image generation models and tools.

Imagen 3 is our highest quality text-to-image model. It generates an incredible level of detail, producing photorealistic, lifelike images, with far fewer distracting visual artifacts than our prior models.

It’s also our best model yet for rendering text, which has been a challenge for image generation models. This capability opens up possibilities for generating personalized birthday messages, title slides in presentations and more.

Our collaborations with the music community

As part of our continued exploration into the role AI can play in art and music creation, we’re collaborating in partnership with YouTube , with some amazing musicians, songwriters and producers.

These collaborations are also informing the development of our generative music technologies, including Lyria , our most advanced model for AI music generation.

As part of this work, we’ve been developing a suite of music AI tools called Music AI Sandbox. These tools are designed to open a new playground for creativity, allowing people to create new instrumental sections from scratch, transform sound in new ways and much more.

We're partnering with musicians, songwriters, and producers to investigate the exciting role artificial intelligence can have in the music creation process.

Today, we’re continuing that experimentation in music with Grammy-winning musician Wyclef Jean, Grammy-nominated songwriter Justin Tranter and electronic musician Marc Rebillet — who are releasing new demo recordings on their YouTube channels, created with help from our music AI tools.

Wyclef Jean, Justin Tranter, and Marc Rebillet are the first to release new demos using the Music AI Sandbox, and each demo is now available for listening on their YouTube channels.

Responsible from design to deployment

We’re mindful about not only advancing the state of the art, but doing so responsibly. So we’re taking measures to address the challenges raised by generative technologies and helping enable people and organizations to responsibly work with AI-generated content.

For each of these technologies, we’ve been working with the creative community and other external stakeholders, gathering insights and listening to feedback to help us improve and deploy our technologies in safe and responsible ways.

We’ve been conducting safety tests, applying filters, setting guardrails, and putting our safety teams at the center of development. Our teams are also pioneering tools, such as SynthID , which can embed imperceptible digital watermarks into AI-generated images, audio, text and video. And starting today, all videos generated by Veo on VideoFX will be watermarked by SynthID .

The creative potential for generative AI is immense and we can’t wait to see how people around the world will bring their ideas to life with our new models and tools.

Sometimes it seems to me like a lot of our research goes into how to take one form of data and make it into another. To frame it a different way, it's about interdisciplinary research and identifying use cases.

We’re seeing a lot of demonstrations and presentations that put this front and center. For example, Kevin Dunnell, a PhD student in Viral Communications at the MIT Media Lab, is working on a project called Latent Lab, a tool that uses AI to help reimagine the user experience of our file systems and how we explore the digital content we consume, create, and communicate.

“LLMs have provided a huge benefit for accessing information and generating text through a chat-based interface,” he said in a recent talk about expanding the interface and re-envisioning what’s possible in research.

Ten years ago, he said, Bret Victor gave a talk on “Thinking the Unthinkable,” and it inspired him to make progress in “upgrading the channels of thinking” for users. As a concrete example, Bret provided the double helix structure of DNA, explaining that James Watson and Francis Crick conceptualized it by interacting with physical metal models—a higher channel of thinking than the symbolic methods typical of biochemists at the time.

Latent Lab, he said, aims to help “upgrade the user’s channel of thinking” by visually and semantically organizing unstructured digital documents. He referred to “embeddings,” numerical representations of text, a compression interface with interactive visualization, and categorical color coding. “You can see how intermingled they are,” he said referring to Media Lab research projects processed by his system and portrayed in the visual graph “and it really shows how interdisciplinary we are here at the Media Lab… once you have data in the (system) we can do a few interesting things.” In aid of explaining the utility, Dunnell talked about system features like ‘progressive disclosure’ for transparency of individual documents that collectively suggest high-level organizational themes and ‘knowledge evolution’ to help illustrate how themes evolve over time.

There's also search and synthesis. “We’re taken to a portion of the map with semantically similar projects that do actually exist in the Media Lab,” he said, explaining a use case of visual associative search. “Users are able to explore the white space between these existing projects, by building a recipe, selecting existing projects, (and) asking the system to factor in certain aspects of the projects to synthesize a new idea.” The technology, he suggested, is assistive. “It serves as a starting point for further ideation,” he said.

Then there are other application ideas. “Can we use this tool for predictive capabilities?” he asked. “Can we identify areas where innovation is most likely to occur, (and) focus resources there?” He suggested we should take externalities into account to achieve this, showing overlaid maps of documents from two different research organizations - MIT Media Lab and Microsoft Research. Showing mapping technologies that Latent Lab uses with clients like BP and Dell, he mentioned “mapping the technology lifecycle.”“(We want to) identify where transitions are occurring,” he said, citing friction that has been identified when ideas transition to research, to patents, to products, and in some cases to utilities.

The tool has been shown to improve the effectiveness of “insight extraction and mental support” compared to traditional search methods when exploring large datasets. “The goal now is to get (Latent Lab) working internally (across more companies) and identify use cases that offer the most value in large organizations,” he added.

“Latent Lab is an AI-driven, graphical knowledge exploration system. It uses text and media analysis to reveal conceptual overlaps between documents at various scales. The interface is designed for exploration rather than traditional search, aiming to inspire a graphical conversation from which new ideas will emerge.

Searching for “makeup that can detect emotion” - a project that sounds like it would happen at the ... [+] Media Lab but doesn’t yet exist - highlights an area of the map with semantically similar projects. Users can explore these projects to identify potential collaborators for pursuing the idea.

Latent Lab includes data from the MIT Media Lab, the US Patent Office, social media posts on COVID-19, and various user-uploaded datasets. The system creates a high-dimensional vector embedding space for each uploaded dataset, which is then reduced to 2D and rendered on-screen for visualization and interactive exploration. Large Language Models are used to extract topics and sub-topics for each document, describing the map’s layout, generating summaries as users explore the map, and synthesizing new ideas from components of user-selected documents and predefined prompts. These generated ideas are shown in the latent space of existing ideas, serving as a starting point for further ideation.
