Two dead, one in serious condition, after collision involving rideshare vehicle in Sydney's south-west

A man and his 11-year-old daughter have died after a rideshare vehicle collided with a ute at an intersection in Sydney's south-west.

The crash occurred on Milperra road in Milperra around 7:40pm on Sunday, according to NSW Police.

Officers found one vehicle had rolled after the collision, trapping both driver and three back seat passengers.

Two of the passengers,  a 41-year-old man and an 11-year-old girl, died at the scene.

The third passenger, a nine-year-old boy, is in hospital in a stable condition.

It's understood the deceased man was the father of the deceased girl and the nine-year-old boy.

The 52-year-old driver was also taken to hospital is in a serious condition in hospital.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden said the sedan carrying the family was "impacted" by a Toyota Hilux being driven by a 19-year-old man as the car was turning right at an intersection.

The sedan was operating as a rideshare vehicle at the time.

The 19-year-old man was treated for minor injuries before being taken to hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

He has since been released.

NSW Ambulance acting superintendent Dylan Snape said the accident was a "highly emotional scene for all of the first responders involved".

Assistant commissioner McFadden said 12 lives had been lost on NSW roads in the past nine days in "tragic, but preventable circumstances".

"What we've seen over the last just over a week is real frustration on our part," he said. 

"I can't imagine the tragedy that is befalling so many families in a such a short period of time."

Police are investigating.

Officials change course amid outrage over bail terms for Indian teen accused in fatal drunk driving accident

New Delhi — Indian justice officials have changed course amid outrage over the bail terms set for a teenager accused of killing two people while driving a Porsche at high speed while drunk and without a license. The 17-year-old son of a wealthy businessman had been ordered to write a 300-word essay and work with the local traffic police for 15 days to be granted bail — a decision that was made within 15 hours of his arrest.

He is accused of killing two young people while speeding in his luxury car on Sunday in the western Indian city of Pune.

The lenient bail conditions initially imposed by the local Juvenile Justice Board shocked many people, including officials, across India. The local police approached the board with an appeal to cancel his bail and seeking permission to treat the boy, who is just four months shy of his 18th birthday, as an adult, arguing that his alleged crime was heinous in nature.

In 2015, India changed its laws to allow minors between 16 and 18 years of age to be tried as adults if they're accused of crimes deemed heinous. The change was prompted by the notorious 2012  Delhi rape case , in which one of the convicts was a minor. Many activists argued that if he was old enough to commit a brutal rape, he should not be treated as a minor.

On Wednesday night, after three days of outrage over the initial decision, the Juvenile Justice Board canceled the teen's bail and sent him to a juvenile detention center until June 5. It said a decision on whether he could be tried as an adult, which would see him face a more serious potential sentence, would be taken after further investigation.

Late Sunday night, police say the teen, after drinking with friends at two local bars in Pune, left in his Porsche Taycan, speeding through narrow roads and allegedly hitting a motorcycle, sending the two victims — a male and female, both 24-year-old software engineers — flying into the air and killing them.

The parents of both victims have urged authorities to ensure a strict punishment for the teen.

The suspect was first charged with causing death by negligence, but that was changed to a more serious charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. On Wednesday he was also charged with drunk driving offenses.

Police have arrested the suspect's father and accused him of allowing his son to drive despite being underage, according to Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar. The legal age for driving in India is 18. Owners of the two bars where the minor was served alcohol have also been arrested and their premises seized.

"We have adopted the most stringent possible approach, and we shall do whatever is at our command to ensure that the two young lives that were lost get justice, and the accused gets duly punished," Kumar said.

Maharashtra state's Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had described the original decision of the Juvenile Justice Board as "lenient" and "shocking," and called the public outrage a reasonable reaction.

Road accidents claimed more than 168,000 lives in India in 2022. More than 1,500 of those people died in accidents caused by drunk driving, according to Indian government data.

Under Indian law, a person convicted of drunk driving can face a maximum punishment of six months in prison and a fine of about $120 for a first offense. If, however, the drunk driving leads to the death of another person, the offender can face two to seven years in prison.

For anyone but police, sitting in a parked car on a highway is a no-no. If you’ve been in a crash, that’s asking for another crash. It’s tops on this list of five mistakes that you don’t want to make after a collision.

Don’t just sit there

Get your vehicle and yourself off the road as soon as possible. As of 2015, there’s a state law in Michigan and most other states. Police say, “If you can steer it, clear it.” You must get off the road if your car is drivable, and if no one has obvious injuries. Whoa, online advice from a law firm says: “Do not move your vehicle. It is very important that your vehicle stays in its original location for insurance purposes.” Wrong. What should you do? Drive to the shoulder or next exit, then stay in your car with seat belt buckled. Moving to a safe place, perhaps a parking lot or even a police station, does not equate to leaving the scene of an accident, according to Michigan law. Don’t delay calling 911

Be prepared to say exactly where you are and give your name. Also, say if you left the scene and why. For example, you felt threatened by speeding cars, darkness, an unfamiliar area or the behavior of the other driver. State law says you must call 911 in a crash that causes injury or more than $1,000 in damage. Rule of thumb?“If there’s visible damage, then call,” Bouchard says. Yet, even in minor crashes, it never hurts to summon police. Many drivers say talking to a 911 operator calmed them after a crash, guiding them on what to do. 

Don’t flash your license

Protect your ID, including your home address. If no police are around, provide your name, phone number and insurance info to the other driver. But be aware: Some at-fault drivers give phony names. In a serious crash, wait for police to arrive before exchanging info. While waiting, no matter who might be at fault, just say you’re waiting for police — as you roll up your window. Once a cop arrives, share any information the officer wants. Try to get the other driver's name, insurance company, phone number and license plate. Get the officer’s name, too.

Don’t take the blame

Instead, take pictures — of both cars, if you can, including license plates. Do that quickly if the other driver starts leaving the scene. But don’t blame others for the crash. Just tell police what you think happened. Stick to the facts, at the scene and if you’re questioned later. If you take the blame and start apologizing, that can affect an insurance settlement. Even though Michigan is a “no-fault” state, some crashes end up in court. And if your crash happens elsewhere, remember that Michigan’s neighboring states — Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin — don’t have “no-fault” insurance.

Numerous crash victims are dazed and want to think they’ll be fine. If in any doubt, get examined. Injuries may become evident after several hours, or even days or weeks later. If you feel fine, your passenger may need attention.

One more tip? It applies, not if you crash but, if you happen to see a crash that just happened. Sorry, church-goers: Don’t be a Good Samaritan.

“We really don’t want people to stop and help,” says Lt. Mike Shaw, spokesman for the Michigan State Police. "We’re seeing more people stopping to help and becoming a hindrance” to emergency responders, as well as a danger to themselves, Shaw says. What helps most when a motorist sees a fresh crash?

“We’d rather you stopped somewhere else that’s safe and just call 911, and really try to know your location when you call,” Shaw says.

So, are you at risk? Traffic fatalities are up — in Michigan, up 15% from 2018 through 2022, according to State Police. Today’s vehicles are bigger and faster, and more drivers are reckless. That’s a trend from the pandemic, when roads were almost empty. “We call it the COVID hangover,” says Gary Bubar, traffic safety specialist with AAA Auto Club Group.

• Pune Police is awaiting an order for the minor to be tried as an adult in this case. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said a review application has been filed before the Juvenile Justice Board to allow the juvenile to be tried as an adult and also to send him to a remand home. The order on the plea is awaited.
• While the police have claimed that the bail has been cancelled, the lawyer appearing for the minor accused, Prashant Patil, has said that there has been no cancellation of bail. He said that the bail order has been modified but not cancelled. He said the board ordered the minor to be taken to a rehab home. 
• The minor has been sent to an observation home till June 5 as per an order by the Juvenile Justice Board, said Kumar.
• Police argued that the teenager should stay at a rehab home as there could be threat to his life outside, but the defence opposed the plea, said the lawyer.  
• Patil said that the process of determining whether a juvenile should be tried as an adult takes months as it includes reports of psychiatrists and counsellors among others, before the JJB gives its judgement. 
• Meanwhile, along with the juvenile’s father, the sessions court also remanded two employees of Hotel Black Club, Nitesh Shevani and Jayesh Gavkar, in police custody till May 24. The juvenile had reportedly consumed alcohol at Hotel Black Club and was drunk at the time of the accident.
• A case has been registered against the owner and employees of the two bars the boy had visited before the accident for ‘serving alcohol to an underage person’. 
• The police have also registered a case under Sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act against the father. Section 75 deals with ‘willful neglect of a child, or exposing a child to mental or physical illnesses’, while section 77 deals with ‘supplying a child with intoxicating liquor or drugs’.
• As per the FIR, the father gave his son the Porsche car despite knowing that the minor did not have a driving licence, thus endangering the lives of others, as well as allowed him to party even when he knew the minor drinks alcohol. 
• Police have registered an FIR under IPC sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 304 A (causing death by negligence), 279 (rash driving) and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act against the minor.
• The prosecution wanted the police custody of the father and the other two to determine why the minor was allowed to drive a car with no number plate.
• The Pune Porsche accident claimed the lives of Anish Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta – both 24, from Madhya Pradesh, and working in Pune – who were on a motorbike when the minor’s vehicle crashed with them in the early hours of Sunday.
• As per the controversial bail order passed by the JJB, which has come under severe scrutiny, the minor’s grandfather had given an assurance that he would keep the teenager away from bad company and that he will concentrate on his study or any vocational course which is useful for his career. The order further stated: The CCL (Child-in-Conflict with Law) will write an essay of 300 words on the topic of road accidents and their solutions.”

Porsche-driving Indian teenager who killed two people ordered to write essay

A n Indian court granted bail to a drink-driving teenager who rammed his Porsche into a motorbike and killed two people, on the condition that he “write an essay” about the incident.

The court also told the 17-year-old boy from Pune in the western state of Maharashtra to undergo treatment for his drinking habit, take counselling sessions and work with the local police for 15 days.

The teenager, who has not been named, is the son of a prominent real estate magnate, and the perceived leniency shown by the judge has sparked outrage in the country .

The accident occurred at around 3.15am in Kalyani Nagar in Pune on Sunday.

A group of friends was returning home on motorbikes after a party at a local restaurant. When they reached the Kalyani Nagar junction, one of their motorcycles was hit by the teenager’s Porsche, police say, causing its two riders to fall and die instantly.

After hitting the riders, the teenager crashed his car into some railings, police say.

A video that has been widely shared on social media shows a group of passersby attacking the driver as he tries to exit the vehicle.

The deceased were identified as software engineers Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, both 25.

A case was registered against the driver at a local police station and he was charged with rash driving, causing death by rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide and endangering life or personal safety of a person.

The accused is reportedly four months shy of 18, the minimum legal age to drive a car in India .

He was reportedly out celebrating his Class 12 exam results.

He was driving at 200 kmh when he collided with the motorcycle.

The boy’s lawyer, Prashant Patil said: “The juvenile accused who was arrested by Pune Police has been granted bail by the Juvenile Justice Board on certain conditions, including that the accused should work with the traffic police of Yerawada for 15 days, accused should write an essay on accident, should get treatment from the concerned doctor to help him quit drinking and should take psychiatric counselling and submit the report.”

Police said they will appeal the bail order and treat the accused as an adult.

“We will not leave any stone unturned to prove that this is a heinous crime,” Pune’s police chief, Amitesh Kumar, told India Today .

Police have also arrested the boy’s father and owners of the two bars that allegedly served him alcohol.

The legal drinking age in Maharashtra is 25.

“We’re in shock,” Jugal Kishor Koshta, an uncle of one of the victims, told NDTV. “It’s condemnable that he should get bail in 15 hours. He and his parents should be investigated. We will discuss the matter once Ashwini’s last rites are over tomorrow.”

“We want his bail cancelled and he should remain in police custody. Because of him, an innocent girl, who has seen nothing of life, died," Sachin Bokde, another uncle of the victim, said.

Sanjay Raut, a prominent member of the opposition party Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, accused Pune police of serving pizza and burgers to the accused teenager after the crash, India Today reported.

“Police commissioner should be suspended. He tried to protect the accused. A young couple was killed and the accused was granted bail within two hours,” he told the ANI news agency.

“In the video, it can be seen that he was drunk, but his medical report was negative. Who is helping the accused? Who is this police commissioner? He should be removed or the people of Pune will come on the streets.”

Teen who killed two with his Porsche car gets bail in 15 hrs; judge asks him to write essay on accidents

Police say the minor’s father and the bar that served him liquor will be booked

A Pune court has granted bail to a 17-year-old boy who was behind the wheels of a speeding Porsche car that rammed into a bike killing two people. The bail was granted just 15 hours after his arrest, sparking an outrage.

The teenager’s lawyer Prashant Patil said the court granted bail on certain conditions. He has to work with traffic police in Yerwada for 15 days, write an essay on accidents, undergo treatment for his drinking habit and take counselling sessions, reported NDTV .

Police said that they will appeal against the bail, and will treat the accused as an adult.

They said cases under sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act will be registered against the minor’s father and the bar that allegedly served liquor to the boy.

As per section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act, a person with actual control or charge of a child can be punished if he assaults, abandons or neglects the child wilfully, and abuses him, causing mental or physical illness. Section 77 pertains to giving liquor or drugs to a child. 

The accident took place around 3.15 am on Sunday in Kalyani Nagar when the luxury car, reportedly at a speed of over 200 km per hour, hit the bike and crashed into the roadside pavement railings.

The bike riders were flung into the air and fell hard, resulting in fatal injuries. Both of them died on the spot.

The deceased have been identified as Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta—both engineers from Madhya Pradesh working in Pune. They were returning home along with other friends after a party at a restaurant in the area.

India Porsche deaths: Outrage at bail granted to underage 'drunk driver' in Pune

An Indian court granted bail to an affluent 17-year-old accused of killing a couple when he crashed his Porsche in the western city of Pune, leading to outrage on social media.

The judge asked the teenager, who is alleged to have been drunk at the time of the incident, to write an essay on road safety and do voluntary traffic work.

The incident occurred on Sunday when the student, whose identity cannot be revealed under the country’s juvenile law, was out with friends in the luxury car.

He was allegedly drunk and travelling more than 200kph when he crashed into Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, both 24, who were on a motorcycle.

Ms Koshta was thrown into the air by the force of the crash, witnesses told police.

Mr Awadhiya also crashed into parked cars. Ms Koshta and Mr Awadhiya died of their injuries.

The teenage driver and a friend were caught by passers-by who attacked them before police arrived. Another person who was in the car was said to have escaped.

Police registered a case of manslaughter against the teenager.

The Juvenile Justice Board, a special court where minors are tried, granted him bail within 14 hours on several conditions, including working alongside traffic police for 15 days and writing a 300-word essay on the "effect of road accidents and their solution".

Police on Tuesday arrested the teenager's father, Vishal Agarwal, a prominent real estate developer, for giving the car to his underage son, who did not have a driving licence.

Police sought to prosecute the 17-year-old as an adult.

“Anyone found supporting the accused shall be dealt with severe punishment," Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said. "The guilty shall be punished irrespective of his economic strata.”

The incident has led to criticism India's legal system, with many social media users ridiculing the ruling.

“The court grants bail to the accused within a few hours and asks him to write an essay on the accident,” Radhika Chaudhary said on X. "The Indian judiciary system applies differently to the rich and poor."

Another user, Ajeet Singh Patel, wrote: “The judiciary of India has increasingly become a puppet of the rich, failing to deliver justice to the poor."

Indian roads are considered to be among the deadliest in the world. The country has 1 per cent of the world’s vehicles but accounts for 11 per cent of global road accident deaths, the World Bank estimates.

Seventy per cent of the victims are between the ages of 18 and 45.

More than 461,000 road accidents were recorded in India in 2022, killing about 170,000 people and causing 443,000 injuries, the latest government data shows.

Indian authorities have tried to tackle the problem by imposing steep penalties after amending road laws in 2019, and the government also promised to revamp road infrastructure and improve vehicle safety.

A Tesla owner says his car’s ‘self-driving’ technology failed to detect a moving train ahead of a crash caught on camera

A Tesla vehicle in Full-Self Driving mode appeared to fail to detect a moving train and stop on its own, leading to a chaotic accident depicted in a video that has been viewed millions of times on social media. 

The car’s owner and driver, Craig Doty II, told NBC News that he takes responsibility for the accident, but he said he also believes that Tesla’s Self-Driving technology, or at least as it existed in his vehicle, is a defective product.

“I was the only one in the car. I was the only car in the accident. So yes, it was my fault, it had to be,” Doty said. “But I feel it was more that the damn car didn’t recognize the train.”

“You do get complacent that it knows what it’s doing,” he said of the Tesla technology. “And usually it’s more cautious than I would be as a driver.”

The accident occurred on the morning of May 8. Doty, a certified general appraiser in Ohio, was driving at around 60 mph, according to a Tesla crash report. The speed limit on the road was 55 mph, according to Doty and a police report associated with the accident. Drivers can request crash reports from Tesla, which are generated using data individual cars send to Tesla servers. Doty requested a report from the incident and provided it to NBC News, along with video of the crash recorded by the car.

In the video, the car speeds toward a railroad crossing with a moving train before the car veers suddenly to the right, slamming into a railroad crossing arm and skidding off the road. 

According to video from the car and the police report, conditions were foggy, but dashcam video of the crash shows that moving boxcars and the telltale flashing red lights of an active train crossing signal could be seen at least five seconds before the accident. 

The accident caused significant damage to the front right side of the car. Pictures taken by Doty show the car’s mangled body and the front right wheel twisted up at a sharp angle.

Doty said that his Tesla failed to slow down as it approached the train and that he slammed on the brakes and took over the car’s steering manually, directing it off the road to avoid the train.

“I was like there’s no way it doesn’t see the train,” he said. “There’s no way it doesn’t see the flashing lights. Yes, it was foggy, but you can still see the lights.”

Full Self-Driving mode, often shortened to FSD, is Tesla’s premium driver assistance option. CEO Elon Musk has promoted it as a crucial part of the company’s future. Tesla says parts of the technology are in beta mode, such as "autosteer," meaning they are still being tested. Tesla sells the product to drivers for $8,000 upfront or $99 per month. 

FSD requires drivers to keep their hands on the wheel of the vehicle while it steers for them; Tesla refers to the application of the technology as “supervised.” On its website, Tesla says, “Your vehicle will be able to drive itself almost anywhere with minimal driver intervention and will continuously improve.”

The website says farther down on the same page: “The currently enabled Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous. Full autonomy will be dependent on achieving reliability far in excess of human drivers as demonstrated by billions of miles of experience, as well as regulatory approval, which may take longer in some jurisdictions.”

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.

FSD’s capabilities and its marketing have been the subjects of scrutiny, both in terms of what it is able to do and whether drivers are fully aware that it still requires them to be attentive. In February, Tesla issued a software update to FSD over concerns about issues related to stopping at intersections. Autopilot, which is Tesla’s standard driver assistance option, has also been the subject of probes by regulators . 

A spokesperson for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the regulator “is aware of this incident and is gathering more information from the manufacturer.”

Doty said his hands were on the wheel for the duration of the incident. The Tesla-generated crash report he provided to NBC News also shows that the system recognized that his hands were on the wheel just ahead of the accident.

The Tesla report shows that the car maintained a speed of around 60 mph while in Full Self-Driving mode before Doty slammed on the brakes and turned the wheel.

Doty said he had owned the Tesla since last year and had come to rely on its Full Self-Driving mode, which he said took some of the burden out of his long commutes, estimating that he had driven 20,000 miles with the feature activated.

“It’s convenient once you get past the awkwardness of it doing everything for you, doing it most times better than you would or more cautiously,” he said. 

But he had at least one similar experience in which, he said, FSD appeared to fail. 

Doty said the car nearly hit a moving train in November after it approached some tracks after a sharp turn.

He said that the Tesla did not slow down but that he was able to stop, still hitting the crossbar and damaging his windshield. He said he chalked it up to the intersection’s coming after a turn. Doty provided documentation of his exchanges with a Tesla insurance claims adjuster at the time that included a detailed description of the incident.

After the second train incident, a police officer took a report. The police report said that the car was in a fully autonomous mode at the time of the crash, though Tesla's Full-Self Driving mode is not rated as fully autonomous. It is currently rated as partially autonomous.

The officer also gave Doty a citation for “failure to control” a vehicle, which comes with a $175 fine. In a hearing Thursday, Doty pleaded no contest to the citation, and asked for leniancy, given that the car was in Full Self-Driving mode. Doty said the judge agreed to strike the citation if Doty proved by July that the damages to the rail would be fixed and paid for by Doty or his insurance.

“I think Elon Musk can show up and pay the fine,” he said. “I understand that I am in control of the vehicle, but I don’t go around causing mayhem and getting in wrecks and driving outlandishly out of control.”

After the incident, Doty posted the video of the crash on an online Tesla forum, seeking more information about similar incidents. Someone took the video and posted it on X, and video of the crash has since been viewed millions of times. 

Doty said a Tesla Collision Center told him Wednesday that the car was totaled. He said the company has not reached out about the video or the incident. 

There have been some indications and previous incidents that have suggested shortcomings of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving mode, many of which have been chronicled online.

In November 2022, a Tesla in Full Self-Driving mode abruptly stopped on a major freeway, according to The Intercept , causing an eight-car pileup. An NHTSA report published last month found dozens of crashes involving Full Self-Driving and noted the company’s December Autopilot-related recall .

“These insufficient controls can lead to foreseeable driver disengagement while driving and avoidable crashes,” the NHTSA wrote in its report.

Five sections of road along Interstate 95 have the largest frequency of crashes within Brevard County , data compiled by the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization shows.

Additionally, two intersections along Wickham Road are among the five most crash-prone intersections in the county.

This is the rankings for the largest number of crashes per year for any transportation corridor, based on 2018 through 2022 data:

• Interstate 95 from Eau Gallie Boulevard (State Road 518) to Wickham Road: 146.8 crashes a year
• I-95 from Fiske Boulevard (S.R. 519) to S.R. 520: 91.8
• I-95 from Wickham Road to Fiske Boulevard (S.R. 519): 86.6
• I-95 from U.S. 192 to Eau Gallie Boulevard (S.R. 518): 75.0
• I-95 from Palm Bay Road to U.S. 192: 72.6

In all, 10 of the top 25 vehicle crash frequency segments are located on I-95; and four are located along Palm Bay Road.

Crashes at intersections in Brevard

These are the five intersections with the most crashes per year, for the period from 2018 through 2022:

• Wickham Road at Lake Andrew Drive: 59.0 crashes a year
• Babcock Street (S.R. 507) at Palm Bay Road: 54.4
• Malabar Road (S.R. 514) at Babcock Street (S.R. 507): 45.6
• S.R. 520 at North Courtenay Parkway (S.R. 3): 40.4
• Wickham Road at Sarno Road: 37.2

In all, nine of the top 25 vehicle crash frequency intersections are located Wickham Road; five are located on Babcock Street; and four are located on Palm Bay Road.

Total crashes in Brevard

From 2018 through 2022, there were 72,742 crashes on Brevard County roadways. The annual totals ranged from 15,142 in 2018 to 13,340 in 2020, a year when travel was down because of COVID-19.

Serious crashes in Brevard

The number of fatal crashes increased 8.0% from 75 in 2018 to 81 in 2022.

The number of "serious injury" crashes decreased 33.9% from 489 in 2018 to 323 in 2022.

Of the 14,001 crashes in 2022:

• 4,220 involved lane departures
• 2,239 involved distracted drivers
• 553 involved impaired drivers
• 367 involved motorcycles

From 2018 through 2022, eight of the top 25 pedestrian crash frequency segments of road were located on U.S. 1; three were located along S.R. A1A; and three were located along Wickham Road. Ranked No. 1 was S.R. A1A from Paradise Boulevard to Eau Gallie Boulevard (S.R. 518).

Six of the top 25 pedestrian crash frequency intersections were located on U.S. 1; five were located along S.R. A1A; and five were located along Babcock Street. Ranked No. 1 was the intersection of Eau Gallie Boulevard (S.R. 518) and Wickham Road.

Crashes involving bicycles in Brevard

From 2018 through 2022, four of the top 25 bicycle crash frequency segments were located on S.R. A1A; three were located along Babcock Street; and three were located along Wickham Road. Ranked No. 1 was U.S. 192 from John Rodes Boulevard to Wickham Road.

Five of the top 25 bicycle crash frequency intersections were located on Wickham Road; and four were located along Babcock Street. Ranked No. 1 was the intersection of Malabar Road at San Filippo Drive.

Crashes involving motorcycles in Brevard

From 2018 through 2022, 13 of the top 25 motorcycle crash frequency segments were located on U.S. 1; two were located on Babcock Street; and two were located along S.R. A1A. Three segments tied for the highest frequency of motorcycle crashes: S.R. A1A from U.S. 192 to Paradise Boulevard; U.S. 1 from S.R. 528 to Canaveral Groves Boulevard; and U.S. 1 from Burkholm Road to the Volusia County line.

Sixteen of the top 25 motorcycle crash frequency intersections were located on U.S. 1; five were located on Babcock Street; and five were located on U.S. 192. Two intersections tied for the highest frequency of motorcycle crashes: Malabar Road and San Filippo Drive; and Babcock Street and U.S. 1.

Fort Wainwright soldier dies in car crash

A Fort Wainwright, Alaska soldier died in a car crash early Saturday after being ejected from the vehicle, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Pfc. Cierra Nglias Truce, 19, was a passenger in a fatal May 18 single-vehicle car crash that involved a sport utility vehicle that rolled over and left the roadway. The driver, Jaydon Bailey, 22, was transported to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released.

At 6:17 a.m., Troopers were notified of the crash, which occurred at mile 294 of the Parks Highway near Anderson, Alaska. The crash is currently under investigation.
