Bad Boy review: Namashi Chakraborty, Amrin Qureshi starrer is a typical 90s predictable rom-com yet a breezy affair

Rajkumar Santoshi is one of the most versatile filmmakers in the entertainment industry and has nailed almost every genre like a boss. While his action flicks like Ghayal , Ghatak and Khakee hold a special place in every moviegoer’s heart, Andaz Apna Apna and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani are stress-busters for cinegoers. Apart from that Santoshi’s The Legend of Bhagat Singh , Halla Bol , Pukar , Lajja , Damini and others have made a mark in the genres of patriotism and social issues.

Now, talking about his latest flick Bad Boy , it takes you back to the 90s-era films, where our hero ( Namashi Chakraborty ) has failed in college, hangs out with his idle friends and is completely dependent on his father. On the other hand, the leading lady ( Amrin Qureshi ) is a studious, scholar and a ideal daughter of the house. Her father (Saswata Chatterjee) is a strict person, who gives her a high-standard and high-quality lifestyle but doesn’t allow her to enjoy small-small things like having a chaat at the road stall or enjoying the rain on the streets. This bucket list gets fulfilled due to our hero and as expected this process leads to the bloom of a love story between the duo.

But of course, the father doesn’t want a boy, who won’t be able to give his daughter a great lifestyle like him. So, he gives him a challenge that for a month he will pay all the bills of his house without choosing any wrong way or borrowing money from friends.

Will our lead hero complete the challenge successfully or give up due to obstacles bombarded by the heroine’s father? Well, for that you have to watch Bad Boy on the silver screen.

Undoubtedly, the story is predictable and usual but what keeps it floating is the screenplay and writing, which are filled with hilarious comical lines performed supremely by Saswata Chatterjee, Rajesh Sharma and Johny Lever. Namashi and Amrin have great screen presence and as newcomers, they put out their best and shine in some of the critical scenes and sequences. The music album composed by Himesh Reshammiya is peppy and hummable but not memorable like his previous ones.

With Rajkumar Santoshi’s signature touch, Bad Boy is a decent entertainer, which has the potential to attract the college-going audience.

Bad Boy Review: Namashi Chakraborty Shines In a Weakly Written Love Story

Mithun Chakraborty's son Namashi Chakraborty's first film Bad Boy lacks a good script and narrative, despite his commendable performance.

Love at first sight, boy chases girl, girl falls in love, then boy impresses girl’s family – Bollywood’s typical notebook for romantic comedies may have different shades for us to watch, experience and enjoy, but what does one do when it looks repetitive and doesn’t make you laugh? Well, that’s what Rajkumar Santoshi’s Bad Boy does. The film is a quintessential love story that has the right intentions to tickle your funny bones and make you root for the lovers, but unfortunately, it fails to come through.

Given Santoshi’s illustrious career with films like Andaz Apna Apna and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, 90s’ and 2000s’ charm with over-the-top background music, comedy, and dialogues may work their wonders, but they don’t hold you long enough in this film. Of course, the idea and intention of love winning over everything may strike the right chord, but bad writing and screenplay let you down.

Namashi Chakraborty, the younger son of veteran actor and icon Mithun Chakraborty makes his debut with the film. As someone who hasn’t grown up watching Mithun’s magic in the cinemas, looking at Namashi’s performance with a clean slate – without the baggage of comparisons with his father, was a complete win. There’s so much honesty and conviction in how he plays Raghu. His emotions are pure, his acting is top-notch, so much so that you’d root for him till the end.

The story opens with a good-for-nothing Raghu bumping into a grumpy old man, only to fall in love with his daughter, Ritu with one glance. While the first half may quickly establish the narrative and predictability, there are moments where Ritu will remind you about Ek Villain’s Ayesha, while Raghu will remind you about Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’s Prem. Although their love story, the comic timings, and the music keep you entertained, an overdose of it just makes it tedious.

The second half of the story drives smoothly, with the dramatic twists and turns making it look interesting. Johnny Lever’s extended cameo appearance with his humorous dialogue keeps you hooked. He lights up every frame effortlessly. Apart from that, the film’s climax may rile you up for its writing, for all the good reasons as it quickly lets you off the hook.

Amrin Qureshi, who also makes her debut in the movie, brings in a different sense of charm and sensitivity with her on-screen presence. While she portrayed her part with honesty, she deserved a better character arc. Despite holding on to her roots, Ritu lacks the necessary complexity and character depth that modern audiences expect from female protagonists in cinemas.

While Namashi and Amrin’s performances are brilliant individually, their on-screen chemistry fails to give the same vibe. They may talk about innocent love, but it only looks good if watched with rose-tinted glasses. All in all, Raghu and Rituparna’s love story does give out an important message about respect, and emotional maturity.

Saswata Chatterjee as a grumpy old man who’s constantly looking out for high quality and high-standard in everything does a splendid job on his part. He has surely outdone himself in some scenes, but if looked at his filmography, this film could have been an easy pass for him. Mithun’s on-screen aura in his cameo appearance may charm you over.

Overall, Bad Boy offers an overdose of over-the-top entertainment, and cringe-worthy dialogues, and will take you back to the 90s-style comedy. It may also serve you as a guilty pleasure watch, but it fails to deliver a good cinematic experience due to its predictable plot and poor writing. The film’s message about love and respect being the strongest emotion is commendable, but it is lost amidst the film’s lack of novelty and repetitive plot.

कलात्मक फिल्मों के दिग्गज निर्देशक गोविंद निहलानी के सहायक के रूप में अपना फिल्मी सफर शुरू करने वाले राजकुमार संतोषी ने हिंदी सिनेमा को चंद बेहतरीन फिल्में दी हैं। सनी देओल ने उन्हें फिल्म ‘घायल’ से स्थापित होने का मौका दिया। बॉबी देओल की बड़े परदे पर फिल्म ‘बरसात’ से लॉन्चिंग के लिए उन पर भरोसा किया। रणबीर कपूर और कैटरीना कैफ की फिल्म ‘अजब प्रेम की गजब कहानी’ उनकी आखिरी कामयाब फिल्म मानी जाती है। बीच में उन्होंने ‘द लेजेंड ऑफ भगत सिंह’ और ‘खाकी’ जैसी ऐसी फिल्में भी दी जिससे लगने लगा था कि वह बदलते दौर के साथ खुद को बदल रहे हैं। निर्माता साजिद कुरैशी ने अपनी बेटी अमरीन और सुपरस्टार रहे मिथुन चक्रवर्ती के बेटे नमोशी की लॉन्चिंग के लिए उन पर शायद इसी के चलते भरोसा किया लेकिन फिल्म ‘बैड बॉय’ की सबसे कमजोर कड़ी अगर कोई है, तो वह राजकुमार संतोषी की कहानी और उनका निर्देशन ही है। अपनी पहली फिल्म के हिसाब से नमोशी और अमरीन दोनों ने कैमरे के सामने काफी मेहनत की है और आने वाले दिनों के लिए उम्मीद भी जगाई है।

New Bad Boys 2024 Movie: Ride or Die Reviews - Critics Share Strong First Reactions

Bad Boys: Ride or Die hits theaters in June, and critics are starting to share their reactions.

The fourth installment in the Bad Boys franchise, Bad Boys: Ride or Die stars the likes of Will Smith , Martin Lawrence, and Vanessa Hudgens.

The movie is directed by duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah , and tells the story of cops-turned-fugitives needing to work together.

Critics React To Bad Boys: Ride or Die

Though Bad Boys: Ride or Die itself does not release until June 7, critics who saw it early have taken to social media to share their thoughts.

Film and TV critic Bill Bria effusively praised the new movie, calling it "a total blast." He appreciated how present "the strong emotional core of this series" is in Bad Boys: Ride or Die , despite the directors not "sacrificing any of its insane fun:"

"'BAD BOYS RIDE OR DIE' is a total blast. It’s crazy how Adil & Bilali have tapped into the strong emotional core of this series without sacrificing any of its insane fun. Smith & Lawrence bring their A-game, the supporting cast step it way up (REGGIE!), & shit blows up real good."

Bria continued in a response to his initial post, emphasizing how "impressed" he is by Adil El Aribi and Bilall Fallah's direction. He finished by saying, "It is a CRIME we cannot see their Batgirl :"

"I can’t say enough about how impressed I am with Adil & Bilali here. They execute some fantastic, glorious, absolutely wild shots in this thing (I have a feeling they were taking notes during AMBULANCE, given their drone work here!). It is a CRIME we cannot see their 'Batgirl.'"

Brandon Davis from ComicBook.com called Bad Boys: Ride or Die "phenomenal." Among other elements, Davis praised the movie's "innovative action beats," and said it was "the best time [he's] had at the movies in a while:"

"'Bad Boys: Ride or Die' is phenomenal. I love the Bad Boys franchise. This one raised every bar. It’s nonstop hilarious. Innovative action beats. So much chemistry with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. The best time I’ve had at the movies in a while. Absolutely loved it."

ScreenRant's Owen Danoff said it "might be the funniest" installment in the Bad Boys franchise. He shouted out to Dennis Greene, but did not explain why, instead teasing, "reasons I’ll let you see for yourselves:"

"Just saw 'Bad Boys Ride or Die!' The action is just as good as you’d expect, and it might be the funniest yet? Biggest applause(s) in my screening went to Dennis Greene as Reggie for reasons I’ll let you see for yourselves!"

DeMicia Inman of Vibe kept it short and sweet:

"Yall this was SOOOOO good wow. I enjoyed a lot."

Critic and entertainment writer Shanelle Genai said Bad Boys: Ride or Die is "a FUN WATCH" (in all-caps). Though "it has its serious moments," Genai wrote, "its overall goal is to ENTERTAIN:"

"Oh girrrrrrrl, this was a FUN WATCH!! The 'Bad Boys' agenda is alive & well, long & strong It feels good to have FUN movies in theaters, ya know? It has its serious moments when it needs to but its overall goal is to ENTERTAIN. Bring some escapism.. Cant wait to see it again!"

Critics Love Bad Boys: Ride or Die

These early critics seemed to have an absolute blast with Bad Boys: Ride or Die , which means great things for fans of the franchise.

The movie's fun tone and overall humor were praised across nearly all of these reactions, and the acting and chemistry seem to be the cherry on top. This reflects the energy the cast seemed to have while filming.

Despite the middling reception to the movie's first installment and the negative reception to the second, it seems that the positively reviewed third movie was not a flop, and the series can recreate that magic for round four.

As marketing has been picking up with new posters and teasers over the last several weeks, the latest film in the Bad Boys franchise just opened things up in a big way. Fandango released a new teaser featuring stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence to announce that Bad Boys: Ride or Die tickets are officially on sale now. The film arrives in theaters on June 7, and will be playing in special formats such as IMAX, Dolby, and 4DX. The newly released promo shows Smith and Lawrence standing behind a nice pool (possibly in the Bad Boys' home of Miami ) holding ticket guns and blasting ticket slips into the air.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die is the fourth film in the buddy-cop franchise starring Smith and Lawrence, and will be their return to the big screen for the first time since 2020. The pair teamed up for their first two films in 1995 and 2003, then went on a 17-year hiatus until debuting the legacy sequel, Bad Boys for Life , in 2020. Unlike many legacy sequels, Bad Boys for Life was appreciated by critics and beloved by audiences upon its release, landing a "certified fresh" score of 76% from reviewers and a nearly flawless rating of 96% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes . The film grossed more than $200 million both overseas and domestically for a total of $426 million at the worldwide box office.

Who Stars in ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’?

Other than the returning titular stars, Bad Boys: Ride or Die has put together an impressive ensemble cast sure to help generate a draw at the box office this summer. Vanessa Hudgens and Alexander Ludwig , both of whom previously starred in Bad Boys for Life , are back reprising their roles as Kelly and Dorn, respectively. Ioan Gruffudd , best known for portraying Reed Richards in the 2005 and 2007 iterations of The Fantastic Four and the forensic pathologist Dr. Daniel Harrow, will also play a role in Bad Boys: Ride or Die . Joe Pantoliano , who has been a franchise staple appearing in all three Bad Boys films to date, will also reprise his role as Captain Conrad Howard, except now instead of being around to help the Bad Boys, recent trailers and teasers allude to him being the one who gets them in trouble.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die's Early Reactions Revealed After First Screenings

Bad Boys: Ride or Die gets lively reactions from audiences ahead of its anticipated summer release. The latest installment in the acclaimed action film series earns rave reviews from early fan screenings.

Per The Hollywood Reporter , Ride or Die held a screening at AMC The Grove 14 in Los Angeles, where stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence made a surprise appearance. Early screenings were also held nationwide on the same day, including Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Washington D.C. and Miami, where the sequel was filmed. Various reactions from the public screenings reached X, with many praising its action, plot twists, humor and the chemistry between Smith and Lawrence . Comicbook.com's Brandon Davis said the film "raised every bar" and was " the best time I've had at the movies in a while ." Meanwhile, The Wrap's Drew Taylor enjoyed how great Smith and Lawrence still are at "busting each other's balls" and hailed directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah for their "inventive staging and camerawork."

Smith and Lawrence entertained the crowd at the L.A. screening of Ride or Die , giving out candy and having a good time as they talked up the sequel. For the duo, Ride or Die is the fourth installment of the Bad Boys franchise they have headlined since the original movie came out in 1995. The most recent sequel, 2020's Bad Boys for Life , is the critical and commercial apex of the titular film series, grossing over $426 million at the global box office and earning a 76% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ride or Die will take some "aggressive creative shots" according to Smith, who recently teased some of the story details in the buddy cop action movie. The film chronicles his and Lawrence's respective lawman characters, Detective Lieutenant Mike Lowrey and Detective Lieutenant Marcus Burnett as they once again try to rid the Miami streets of crime. However, Mike and Marcus' careers are in jeopardy as the late Captain Howard, who died in Bad Boys for Life , is painted as a crooked cop, leaving the duo to try and clear his name and protect their reputations.

Ride or Die also features Alexander Ludwig, Vanessa Hudgens and Paola Núñez. The film also sees Jacob Scipio reprise his role as Mike's estranged son , Armando Aretas, who helps his father and Marcus in their quest for justice while avenging his criminal past. Better Call Saul's Rhea Seehorn, Tasha Smith, Ioan Gruffudd and Tiffany Haddish also feature in the Sony blockbuster.

Smith and Lawrence recently teased that Ride or Die may not be the finale of the Bad Boys franchise, with Lawrence recently telling Entertainment Weekly, “I’m going to carry on as long as my brother carries on. It’ll be very hard to get rid of me.” Filming of Ride or Die wrapped in March.

Ride or Die opens in theaters on Jun. 7 .
