PhD/Master of Psychology (Clinical)

IMPLY: A program for the construction of deduced intervals on secondary contrasts from confidence intervals on primary contrasts

The UNSW combined PhD/Master of Psychology (Clinical) is a four-year, full-time degree that encourages initiative and originality in research. High-level candidates are offered the opportunity to engage in advanced training in areas relevant to the professional practice of psychology.

Our program has a research component as well as coursework and professional placement components. Its focus is on the diagnosis, assessment and treatment of people with a range of psychological challenges. It includes advanced training in research skills that are particularly relevant to clinical application.

A full scholarship is required to undertake this program.

Primary supervision must be provided by an academic who holds a position in the School of Psychology.

The minimum academic eligibility requirement is completion of a four-year APAC-accredited sequence in psychology, including a major research thesis/project, with Honours Class 1 (85%), or international equivalent. Qualifications must have been completed within the last 10 years (exceptions may be possible in limited circumstances).

While there is a standard process to apply for most Higher Degree Research programs at UNSW, there are additional requirements for Combined applicants which relate to the Masters component of the program.

Please review the  step-by-step application guide .

The School does not have specific requirements for a research proposal/research description. Applicants can be guided both by the general information published in the  Document Submission Guidelines  and advice from their potential supervisor.

Applicants must:

  • demonstrate their competency in speaking and communicating in English is sufficient to practise the psychology profession
  • satisfy both  UNSW's English language requirements  and those required by the  Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) .

All applicants, domestic and international, are encouraged to use AHPRA’s  Pathways diagram for all professions  (under ‘Additional resources’) to guide their understanding of AHPRA’s requirements.

  • Term 1 is the only available intake for this program.
  • Applicants should familiarise themselves with the  key scholarship dates , as deadlines are strict and a scholarship is required to undertake this program.
  • International psychology qualifications must include a major research thesis/project and must be assessed by the  Australian Psychological Society (APS)  before an application is submitted.  Note that the APS will only assess complete qualifications.
  • As the number of places available each year is limited, entry into this program is competitive. Selection is based on the availability of supervision, academic qualifications, two referee reports and performance at an interview. Only shortlisted applicants will be invited to participate in an interview – remote participation may be permitted in limited circumstances.
  • Enrolled students must register as provisional psychologists prior to program commencement and registration must be maintained for the duration of enrolment.
  • Applicants should familiarise themselves with the relevant  registration standards  for the psychology profession. You must meet these requirements before an application for registration as a provisional psychologist can be approved.
  • Applicants should review the inherent requirements of the program before applying.
  • Applicants interested in BOTH a Combined program AND a stand-alone Master program OR a Combined program only must submit ONE research (Combined) application and ONE coursework (Master) application.

The program is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as a fifth and sixth year of study. Graduates are eligible to apply for full membership of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA).

Graduates are also eligible for Associate Membership of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists. After completing a Psychology Board of Australia approved Clinical Psychology registrar program (further two years of full-time equivalent supervised practice), graduates are eligible to apply for APS College of Clinical Psychology Fellowship and endorsement as a Clinical Psychologist.

  • Arrow-right #1 in Australia for Psychology

Entry requirements

Applications for 2025 are now open..

Mid-year intake is not available.

Which course do I apply for? Pathways to fourth year/honours

  • Also open to graduates of the Graduate Diploma of Psychology (340AA) at the Melbourne School of Psychological Science

Selection advice for entry into the psychology Honours program

The minimum requirement to be eligible for selection to the Psychology honours program is completion of all the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts, or Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Biomedicine, with an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited major in Psychology with a weighted average of at least 70% in the second and third-year Psychology subjects, or equivalent. In computing the weighted average, the average of the third year Psychology subjects is assigned twice the weight of the average of the second year Psychology subjects.

Selection advice for entry into the Graduate Diploma in Psychology (Advanced)

The minimum requirement to be eligible for selection to the Graduate Diploma in Psychology (Advanced) is completion of an undergraduate degree and an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited major in Psychology with a weighted average of at least 70% in the second and third-year subjects within the psychology major, or equivalent. In computing the weighted average, the average of the third year Psychology subjects is assigned twice the weight of the average of the second year Psychology subjects.

General advice for fourth year selection (both Graduate Diploma (Advanced) and Honours programs)

  • The fourth year program comprises of four courses. The course structure is the same across all four Psychology fourth year programs.
  • Meeting the minimum requirements outlined above does not guarantee selection; they reflect the minimum standard for eligibility only.
  • Entry is highly competitive and both the total available places in our fourth year programs and the cut-off mark will vary each year depending on the availability of supervisors and resources in suitable project areas.
  • Approximately 100 fourth year program places are available each year.
  • We recommend that prospective students look at the research profiles of our academics to gauge the full breadth of research areas within which a project could be undertaken. Academics may also have listed on their profiles areas they are interested in supervising.

To calculate your fourth year Psychology entry score you will need two values:

  • a = your average score for Level 2 (second year) psychology subjects
  • b = your average score for Level 3 (third year) psychology subjects

The formula for calculating your entry score is (a + 2b)/3

So if your Level 2 average is 70 and your Level 3 average is 80, your formula score would be (70 + 160)/3 = 76.67.

The Selection Committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application in accordance with the Student Application and Selection Procedure .

Applicants are required to satisfy the university’s English language requirements for postgraduate courses. For those applicants seeking to meet these requirements by one of the standard tests approved by the Academic Board, performance band 6.5 is required.

Entry score adjustments for 2020 results:

For applicants with results from the University of Melbourne for subjects undertaken in Semester 1, Winter Term and/or Semester 2, 2020, the following will apply:

  • A Psychology Benchmark will be established based on all psychology subjects completed any time other than Semester 1, Winter Term and Semester 2, 2020.
  • Subjects undertaken in Semester 1, Winter Term and/or Semester 2, 2020, for which results are lower than the Psychology Benchmark will be excluded from the entry score calculation.

The above changes do not apply to yearlong subjects undertaken in 2020; such results will be included in the entry score calculation.

In the case that applying this rule results in no eligible Level 2 or Level 3 marks for inclusion, then the Psychology Benchmark will be used as the entry score.

For external applicants, the benchmark will not apply and we will use numerical scores for all available level 2 and level 3 psychology subjects in the selection formula.

Pass/fail grades will be excluded from the selection formula.

In the case that excluding pass/fail subjects from the selection formula leaves either the Level 2 or Level 3 terms in the formula empty, the entry score will be the non-empty term (i.e., average of eligible Level 2 subjects if no Level 3 marks are eligible for inclusion; average of eligible Level 3 subjects if no Level 2 marks are eligible for inclusion).

Further information on the entry score adjustments .
