I have cherry-picked five skills you need to become a researcher for those of us who are aspiring to step into the field of academic research. Each field such as arts or science has its own specialist skills. In addition, there are a handful of key skills which are crucial to success .

Project Management

Every research project requires a degree of project management. This is a term you have probably heard being used. But what exactly do we mean by project management?

Project management means high-quality planning. You make a step by step plan on how you intend to reach your final objective. You set achievable aims, realistic milestones and identify other necessary resources (manpower and finances).

As a researcher, you need to complete thorough research to receive external funding and to get your project off the ground. If you are currently working on someone else’s project, make sure that you observe, ask questions and learn as much as possible.

Handling Budgets

Another key skill is learning how to effectively manage a budget. It might be a task which you have not done in any great depth for your PhD. If so, do gain some further experience of handling budgets. You will need this skill in order to lead your own research project.

As an academic, you might have administrative support to help you hold the purse strings whilst the final decision-making and responsibility will come down to you. As with your own domestic budget, keeping a regular check on monies in and out is vital. Do not bury your head in the sand if things appear to be going wrong. Make sure you match your research goals to the money you have been awarded. Do not overcommit yourself in the hiring of other staff or running collaborative workshops (both of which can cost a lot of money). Remember that the money is there to be spent so do not hoard it! And finally, make sure you keep good records of your income and spending. Your university, funding body or the taxman may want to see your records at any time.

Team Leading/Managing

Working successfully with others could be difficult in the academic world (we are used to working with a large degree of autonomy). However, a research project often requires the support of others: colleagues at your institution and elsewhere, administrative staff and at times people in the private sector.

If you are managing the project, you need to know two main things: how to get the best out of each of your workers and how to make their working experience positive. Asking each person to play their part is vital, as well as listening to them, asking for their feedback on decisions or exploring any issues if they are not happy. Being able to assess each colleague’s needs and vulnerabilities is essential if you want to successfully lead them as a team.

Handling Data

Depending on your field, the results you gain from your project could include lab experiments, statistical evidence, interview materials or research in an archive. Whatever results you get, you need to be able to successfully handle large amounts of data. Without effective data skills, you will never get to the exciting stage of analysing your results.

So how do you manage data successfully? By being focused, structured and planning ahead. Start with organising an electronic or paper-based data storage system. Design and set up your database. Organise storage for hard copies of raw materials and catalogue them clearly. Make sure you keep records of who is collecting what as you go along. You must not lose any work because of incompetence or disorganisation. When it comes to writing up your research later, you will have all the answers you need at your fingertips.

Closely linked with data management is the necessity of developing IT skills. Although you might consider yourself a confident user of IT, you will need to learn new packages, online platforms and programmes all the time. Take every opportunity to refresh and update your IT skills.

Take a few minutes to think about any data collection or storage packages that could help your research. Are there any IT methods that could greatly support your work? What about analytical tools for working with large amounts of data? Could you build your own website? Perhaps you need something bespoke and experimental for your project that you could help to design. A new bibliographical tool could be invaluable to help you write up your research. Developing new IT skills could help you to present your work in a more innovative, convincing and refreshing way. IT never stands still.

The pace of technological change is unlikely to slow down any time soon. If you would like to work as an academic researcher, you will need to keep on developing your skills.

Several models outline the basic knowledge and competencies that a professional (in this case, a teacher) must have in order to carry out research, including the LART model suggested by Luis Arturo Rivas-Tovar , which lists the key competencies as:

  • The ability to state a research problem : start from what is known and move to what is desired to be known.
  • Know how to elaborate a contextual framework : analyse how the stated problem occurs within a whole and in the context you want to research.
  • Examine the state of the art : review what is already known about the defined problem in the literature in order to aid the search for new knowledge. Each part of the problem must be studied separately.
  • Prepare and validate data collection instruments: while considering the objective of the study, define the type of research best suited to it, the instrument(s) to be used, and the individuals who will validate and answer them.
  • Build a research model: once you have visualised the problem or event to be researched, establish the process you will follow to analyse it and achieve the study objectives.
  • Know how to analyse the data obtained: recognise that different techniques are available to process the results, which are linked to the type of research and the scale used in the data collection instruments.
  • Know how to write scientific articles : any professional researcher must learn the citation styles: MLA (for literature), CBE (for basic sciences) and APA (for social sciences). Write briefly and concisely and use the IMRaD structure (introduction, method, results and discussion) to present your work.
  • Present your results at a conference:  this ability means the new knowledge will be communicated and, most likely, doors will be opened to exchange experiences with other researchers – in this case, teachers from different disciplines and educational institutions.
  • Master a second language : English is the universal language, so it is necessary to learn it to be able to communicate in international journals or at conferences.

These nine skills can help guide professionals interested in researching teaching, although they can also, of course, be applied to almost any field. Even if you do not have a particularly scientific profile, they can help instigate a critical view of any topic or event, even one already defined or being tested.

Indeed, as educational engineers, we often analyse educational models to help gauge the impact of pedagogical innovations.

But for what purpose? To answer, here are three key reasons that can apply to any research:

  • To gain in-depth knowledge of a topic, event or situation and visualise the place each of its components occupies.
  • To communicate the knowledge obtained to the people involved to help them grasp the scope of their participation in the field studied.
  • To help make decisions that favour or produce changes in the object/subject of research.

These three purposes, I think, show the usefulness of the nine competencies. They can help us detect strengths as well as opportunities for improvement – and provide the information needed to adjust or optimise.

Finally, the central argument for mastering these nine competencies is that it demonstrates the commitment and passion that any person, whether they are a researcher or not, must put into a field they want to know better. Only through displaying the correct level of rigour can we prepare to find and then solve those aspects of education (or any other field) that remain to be discovered.

Data research, analysis, and reporting are the foundation of companies now. For example, some of the highest-valued companies in the world are run off of data, such as Microsoft and google.

Analysts can evaluate and understand the data through statistical methods and software. Once they collect their data, they can analyze it through mathematical, statistical, and analytical models to find patterns and trends that may lead them to business opportunities. 

After they have analyzed the data and understand what it is telling them, they will combine all of the information into a report to make it understandable for management. This way, analysts can communicate with them to make future business decisions.

In most cases, the research analyst is an entry-level position; thus, they work as part of a team and differ from those presenting the information. So, when they are in meetings and conference calls, they do not say much, but the information they create does. 

Types of Research Analysts

There are primarily two types, there are buy-side and sell-side analysts, and their responsibilities slightly differ. The buy-side analyst usually works for a brokerage firm, and the sell-side research analyst usually works for an investment firm. 

When asset management (buy-side) hires rating analysts, they help the company make better business decisions by researching, analyzing, and communicating data to management. This data pertains typically to specific security they may invest in. 

Buy-side  securities analysts  usually work for large institutional investment firms such as hedge funds, mutual funds , or pension funds. Buy-side analysts are considered more professional, academic, and reputable when compared with sell-side research analysts. 

Being a buy-side analyst is all about being right and occasionally avoiding negatives. They also cover one sector, such as the industrial or technology sector. For sell-side analysts, it is common for funds to have multiple analysts for one industry. 

A sell-side analyst's job is to follow a few companies, most within the same sector. These analysts will provide reports on the companies, offer models that project the firm's financial results, and speak with customers or competitors. 

The sell-side analyst's job is to provide research and reports on companies, financial estimates, and price targets. Many analysts will combine their estimates and price targets into one, calling it a consensus estimate. Sell-side analysts provide their reports to investment institutions. 

The analysts will report their research results and what they can conclude. Most of the results they will find are in large clumps of data that most people cannot read. When transitioning it into a presentation, they will add a buy, sell, or hold recommendation. 

Buy-side and sell-side do a lot of the same work; however, the sell-side will sell the research and reports made. That said, the sell side could see a decrease in demand since the buy and sell sides do the same work. 

Research Analyst Qualifications

Most analysts will need a minimum of a bachelor's degree even to be considered for a job. Most employers like their analysts to have a bachelor's degree in statistics, mathematics, or a related discipline. Most entry-level positions do not require a master's degree.

There are a few reasons employers are okay with if an analyst does not have prior experience. First, employers can teach the analyst how they want their jobs completed. Also, although analysts may not have much experience, they still might have valuable skills.

There are primarily two groups of skills you need to become a securities analyst. Technical skills are those that can be required for a specific job. Soft skills are those that travel from job to job. 

For physicians, a few technical skills would be prescribing medication correctly or diagnosing conditions. However, a car mechanic would not need these. Instead, both professions could use soft skills like communication and leadership.

Financial Analyst vs. Research Analyst 

There are many slight differences between a financial analyst and a securities analyst. Still, the main difference is that research analysts cover a much broader use of research, examination, and interpretation. The data collection can be considered more of an investigative act. 

Financial analysts will likely give trading or investing advice from the data they collect, examine, and report to their managers. A crucial role of financial analysts is to analyze investment portfolio performance and look for new flaws or opportunities. 

These analysts rely on fundamental analysis to determine a company's value; they will analyze its:

  • Profitability

current outstanding debt.

This detailed analysis can be used to find an investment opportunity for their firm. 

Securities analysts can be considered more data crunchers. They will spot:

  • Market trends
  • Abnormalities
  • Flaws to find investment opportunities

As a result, their outlook can be broader than financial analysts. Although, some research positions are closely related to financial analysis. These are investment research analysts, they can be considered higher securities analysts, and they make more than the average securities analyst. 

The two jobs regarding education are similar. Although both analysts need a good background in finance and economics, financial analysts certainly need it more than securities analysts. Both also need a good education in mathematics. 

Regarding pay, financial and equity analysts have little difference in their salaries; the average for both careers is about $80,000. Senior-level positions are usually paid more. However, entry-level positions for both jobs are between $50,000 and $70,000. 

Generally, there are a few main differences between financial and equity analysts. A financial analyst inspects financial data and helps companies make decisions. An equity analyst will gather and interpret data and make future financial projections.

Mid to senior-level analysts can expect to make salaries between $65,000 and $90,000 yearly. However, salaries also depend on the companies you work for and your location. For example, an equity analyst for JP Morgan will likely make more than an analyst at a local college.

Research Context

Malaria is a vector borne disease causing over 200 million infections and 400,000 deaths annually.  For the past decade, malaria in the Americas has been a neglected disease. Cases in the Amazon have increased more rapidly than any region in the world, while cases in Central America have increased 10-fold since the end of the Pandemic.  Although there is no single underlying cause for this increase, climate change, land use change (deforestation), mining, logging, internal/international migration, vector ecology, and lack of political and economic commitments all contribute to this growing epidemic. 

To address these challenges, we have ongoing research in Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Panama, and Honduras to better understand the relationship between human and vector behavior impacting malaria risk. Our research is supported by NIH, NASA, and the Duke Climate-Health Initiative, and we pursue the following types of research questions: (1) how does migration contribute to malaria transmission; (2) how can we continue improving and effectively implementing  malaria early warning systems; (3) what malaria interventions are the most effective at slowing malaria transmission in different socio-environmental contexts; (4) what types of climate-health visualizations are most effective at communicating forecasted malaria risk to program managers and community-based health care workers; and (5) how can we better characterize malaria ecology (vector density, human risk) across different spatial and temporal scales (climate and land cover scales).  Our research team is highly interdisciplinary, representing epidemiology, demography, climate and atmospheric sciences, biostatistics, economics, geography, entomology, and international development. However, we also represent scientists and policymakers from over ten institutions and speak 4 primary languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian). 

Occupational Summary

We are seeking a full-time data analyst to support three large-scale studies in Latin America. One is an NIH-supported project in the Amazon that is expanding and implementing a malaria early warning system (MEWS) in Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. This project includes an analysis for social networks along international borders to understand how social or economic connectivity between remote communities contributes to malaria incidence.  The second analysis is a NASA-supported study to evaluate modification of our MEWS to an elimination context in Panama and Honduras. This project (similarly to the Amazon) works on developing a platform for integrating climate, land, health surveillance, infrastructure, and other covariates to produce malaria forecasts up to 12 weeks in advance to support improved resource deployment to create a more rapid movement toward malaria elimination.  The third project is supported by the Duke Climate Commitment and is testing the main hypothesis that international migration is altering fundamental malaria ecology in Panama, leading to novel malaria genotypes, introduction of new malaria vectors, and increased transmission risk to local, indigenous populations. 

Work Performed

A detailed description of functional areas and tasks follows:

  • Coordinate with the PI (William Pan), project coordinator, and local PIs to implement data management protocols for each project, including the set-up of multiple datasets, documentation, data cleaning, creation of codebooks, and quality checks.
  • Develop detailed data access documentation that will be used for subsequent data dissemination in coordination with field partners in Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Panama, and Honduras.
  • Coordinate with Duke OIT and supporting research team members in accessing and using the data; and train and support research team members in using the virtual machine and network data storage as the team composition evolves over the period of the study.
  • Analyze data (STATA, R, or SAS expertise required; familiarity with Python ArcGIS or other programs is a plus).
  • Work with other team members to support the generation of data summaries, including data visualizations for planned policy briefs, reports, as well as websites.
  • Collaborate with the study team and contribute to research manuscripts as needed.
