Nigerian Passport Renewal – Changing your Name After Getting Married

' src=

I got married recently and decided to get a new passport to match my new name. Just thinking about the Nigerian passport renewal process alone almost discouraged me from doing so. However, Mark and I figured that it would do us a lot of good in the long run.

It took me about two months to complete the whole process. For many reasons, this time could be much longer or shorter. So if you are planning to change your name on your Nigerian international passport, I advise that you begin as early as you can.

Going through this article might put you off because of how cumbersome the process seems, so I have decided to put up a summary first. You can simply allocate blocks of time to each step so that you don’t get overwhelmed.

What's Covered in this Post

Overview | Nigerian Passport Renewal After Marriage…

This is a summary of the whole process to change your name after marriage. You’ll find a detailed breakdown of each step further down in this post. If you’re looking only to renew your passport, see the Nigerian Passport Renewal Process section further down this post.

Total time will vary; For me, it took: 45 days

Change of Name in Nigeria – The Process

Highlighted updates from the comment section….

Changing your name Nigerian Passport

There are a few documents you need to get out of the way before you begin. If you opt to adopt a new surname after marriage, you need to make it legal. The first step to setting this in motion is to obtain a marriage certificate. You will typically get this at the registry after your legal ceremony or at any institution authorized to issue one.

Once you have this, work on getting an affidavit for a change of name and a Newspaper publication for the same. I found it easier and more convenient to employ the services of Lawpadi, a legal information platform to help handle this phase. I paid a sum of ₦10,000 for their service at the time.

The fee covered the costs of obtaining the affidavit in court, publication in a national newspaper and the delivery of both documents to my home. The service was excellent and I felt it was good value for money.

(Lawpadi no longer offers this service. Thanks to Abiola for providing this update)

Cost of Publishing a Name Change in Nigeria

If you prefer to take a ‘DIY’ approach, you can begin by contacting the national media house of your choice. The cost to have your name changed in a national newspaper could range from ₦3,000 to ₦5,000 . Most newspapers charge the latter and a few of them, like The Guardian newspaper , offer online services. To use this service, you would need to upload your marriage certificate.

Next, you would need to get a court affidavit for a change of name. At the time of this writing, I am unable to confirm what the official cost of this is. I have seen prices ranging from ₦100 to ₦2,000 .

Documents Needed for a Change of Name in Nigeria

To get the affidavit and newspaper publication, I had to submit the following documents to the Lawpadi team;

  • Information about my current name, new name, gender, the reason for the change, and so on
  • A copy of my marriage certificate
  • A means of identification showing my current name
  • Passport photograph

Once you have the affidavit and newspaper publication, laminate and make photocopies of them because you’ll be needing these copies almost everywhere else.

The next document you would need is a National Identity Slip or Card. As of the time of writing this article, you cannot get a new Nigerian International passport without this. So, If you haven’t registered for one before, you should do so. But if you have, you would need to apply to modify your existing details.

Getting a National Identity Number (NIN) or Card in Nigeria

To get a new national identity number (NIN) or card, follow the steps below;

  • Fill the pre-enrolment form online. This is optional, however, it could help speed up your actual enrolment.
  • After submitting your application, download and print the pre-enrolment slip.
  • Go to the nearest NIMC registration centre with the slip and other supporting documents. You can find all the available centres here . You can also make inquiries at your nearest local government office.
  • There, officials will enter the details of your application, take fingerprint biometrics and your photo. Be sure to crosscheck the details entered on your behalf. If it is entered wrongly, you would need to follow the process below to modify it.
  • It takes 1-5 working days to get your NIN slip. This slip (and not the card) is the most important thing as it has your NIN number written on it. You can laminate it and use it as a formal means of identification.
  • Read more about the process on the NIMC’s website

Documents Needed to Get a National Identity Card in Nigeria

These are the documents needed to enrol for a new National Identity Number or Card;

  • Filled enrolment form or pre-enrolment slip
  • A valid means of identification. This could be your international passport, driver’s license, voter’s card, etc. For a full list, see the NIMC’s website .

Cost of Getting a National Identity Card in Nigeria

The NIMC’s website says that enrolment is free. I have since found that this is not always the case. Officials in most centres will demand a fee from you. I had to pay ₦3,000 to get my first slip and ₦5,000 to get another one bearing my new name.

Having experienced crossing the Seme Border when it was full of shacks, I know there are ways to get out of paying this amount but you should know that this may result in the process becoming long and frustrating.

Changing your Name on your National Identity Slip or Card in Nigeria

To change your name on your national identity slip or card, you would need to pay a modification service fee. It costs ₦ 500 to change most fields, except the ‘Date of Birth’ field which costs ₦ 15,000. For a full list of fields that can be modified, see the NIMC’s website . For the payment process, follow the steps below;

Modification to your National Identity Slip or Card – Payment Process

  • Go to www.remita.net to pay the modification service fee.
  • Select ‘Pay FGN and State TSA’ and then choose ‘FGN: Federal Government of Nigeria’
  • In the field that says ‘Who do you want to pay?’, type in ‘National Identity Management Commission’
  • In the ‘Name of Service/Purpose’ field, select ‘Modification of any Other Field Other than DOB – Per Transaction’
  • If you are updating multiple fields, you can choose ‘National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Fees‘.
  • Fill in the other fields and click on ‘Submit’.
  • Pay the fee with any of the available methods of payment. Keep your RRR code handy just in case you need it.
  • Print out a confirmation slip to take with you to the NIMC centre.

Modification to your National Identity Slip or Card – Documents Needed

What you would need;

  • Filled form – this would be given to you at the NIMC office. The NIMC says this form is free, however, officials in some centres charge ₦ 50 for it.
  • Letter of application for the change of name. For Lagos based citizens, this should be directed to the ‘National Identity Management Commission, Alausa, Ikeja. (A template will also be provided to you)
  • Sworn affidavit
  • Newspaper publication
  • Marriage certificate
  • Confirmation of payment of modification service fee.

The process to effect the change is similar to the process of getting a new slip or card. Refer to the last 4 points in the ‘Getting a new National Identity Number or Card’ section above.

How to Change your Name on Your Nigerian International Passport

Change your Name on your Nigerian Passport after Marriage – Documents Needed

Finally, to change your name on your Nigerian International Passport, go to the Immigration office near you. If you are changing your name due to marriage, you do not have to go to Abuja to get it done. In Lagos, you can apply at the passport offices in Ikoyi or Ikeja. These are the documents you would need;

  • Filled form for a change of name on passport
  • Letter of application for a change of name addressed to The Consular General
  • Photocopy of your husband’s passport data page.
  • * ₦ 30,000 non-refundable administrative fee (according to the Nigerian Immigration Service’s website )
  • * ₦ 25,000 for a 5-year 32-page passport booklet; ₦ 35,000 for a 10-year 32-page passport booklet; ₦ 70,000 for a 10-year 64-page passport booklet.

* *These prices may not be accurate. As of the time of this writing, the NIS website presents multiple conflicting information. It may be best to contact your nearest Immigration office for more accurate information.

The Nigerian Passport Renewal and Name Change Process…

Once you have submitted the documents above, the next step is the biometrics capture. This may come a few days after the application for a change of name has been approved. After the approval, you will be notified to go to the immigration office for the biometrics data capture.

Mentally prepare to spend a full day at the centre, however, this could be less. It will take another few days before you receive your passport as the name change request is processed in Abuja. Note that when you get your confirmation slip after the biometrics capture, it will still carry your old name.

You will be notified when your passport is ready to be picked up. You can also track the status of your application through the NIS’ website . The last step in this process is to ‘activate’ your new passport. This process will take an hour or so (for crowded centres).

The officials will run your new passport through a scanner and confirm your identity by taking your fingerprints. And with that, the long process of changing your name on your Nigerian International passport will come to an end!

Note that these final steps also apply if you are renewing your passport for reasons outside of marriage. For example, if you’ve exhausted the pages of your passport. You would need to go to the immigration office with your old one to apply for the new one.

I hope you found this guide on the Nigerian Passport Renewal process useful. Let me know your thoughts or questions in the comment section below!

Hello Gabriel, in this case, it’s better to visit your nearest immigration/NIMC office for the best way to proceed.

' src=

Do i need to go to Abuja for change of date of Birth

From what I’m reading online, it seems you do not have to travel to Abuja for this, but please visit your nearest immigration office to confirm.

' src=

Thanks for the update. I want to change my name and renew my expired passport. Do I have to pay for each or it’s just a payment, cos I have started the DIY, on the portal after the change of name page, I was redirected to renewal page. I hope my new name won’t have an expired passport.

The process of changing your name gets you a new passport with a new expiry date in 5 or 10 years, depending on the option you choose.

' src=

Thank you for this publication, the facilitator who is handling mine also told me I would have to visit Abuja for name re-arrangement. My first passport was issued before the NIN was introduced and has even expired but the first and middle names weren’t arrange properly while it was correctly arranged on NIN, do you think I will still have to travel to Abuja to sort this out.

Hello Toye, it seems going to Abuja is the only option for now in this scenario.

Thanks for the update on change of name on international passport, but as of today 14th February, 20024 the immigration officers in Lagos still insisted that one must go to the Abuja office to effects any either a of change or correction of name or date of birth on the passport. I am really frustrated here, don’t know what to do. Thanks and God bless

Thank you for sharing this update, Adeola. I believe if you’re changing or correcting details on your passport due to reasons other than marriage, then you need to go to Abuja.

' src=

Good morning…. please to be able to change my name on my passport must I travel to abuja

Hello Joshua, If you are not changing your name due to marriage, I believe you do.

' src=

Hi Amara, Pls I did capturing in June 22 and up till now (October 6) , it is still not ready. We have been calling and be going to the centre and they keep saying it is not ready. How long does it take to get passport for change of name?

Hello, it should typically take a few days after biometrics and data capture to get your new passport. This has taken too long. I’m not sure there’s much you can do from your end, except to wait or speak with your contact at the immigration office.

Maybe you could also try emailing/tweeting @ the Nigerian Immigration service to see if this can be expedited.

' src=

Hello, have you been able to sort it out? Because I’m having the same issue as well

' src=

Hi Amara, This has really been helpful, thank you. Please, can I get a sample letter to the consular general for a change of name due to marriage. How do I go about it?

Hi John, sadly, I don’t have a picture of the letter. I was given a template at the immigration office. I think you can get one there as well.

Thanks for the reply

I apply for Chang of name due to marriage in my international passport since Feb, I capture on April since than is not yet out what should I do

Hi Obilor, if you have a contact at the immigration office, it’s best to follow up with them, otherwise it’s simply a waiting game.

I want to renew my passport and change the name on it.. All my documents matches my new name, how do l go about it please.

Hello Shalom, if you’re not changing your name as a result of getting married, you might have to go to Abuja for the process. I have no information to this effect and it’s best to visit your nearest immigration office to confirm the requirements. If you’re doing so after getting married, I believe this post answers your question. Kindly go through it and let me know if you need specific clarifications.

' src=

I did my passport not long ago an i noticed that the third name in my passport is not the same with the one in my waec how can i go in changing of name

Hello, it is best to contact your nearest immigration office as the process for changing your name that way may be different than what it highlighted here. But for sure, you will need to get a court affidavit for the change and probably change your NIN as well if it also has differences.

' src=

I want to ask, must my wife change her name to mine once we get married.? What’s Re the benefits and disadvantages. I really don’t want to go through this process. Also, will this affect my traveling Ning plans?

No, she must not. It is entirely a personal decision. I am unsure if there are many cons travel-wise once you have all the proper documents, including your marriage certificate. The only place of concern I’ve heard of so far is when children are involved and one spouse is travelling alone. Sufficient documentation is needed if they have a different name from the accompanying spouse.

I guess another advantage will be that changing your name after marriage shows commitment and presents a more united/trustworthy front. I won’t dwell on this point so much though, as I think choosing not to change your name is common these days, and there are other ways to present a united and trustworthy front.

' src=

Hi amarachi, I want to ask, is there any problem that I may face if I change my name and travel to a country where I’ve travel before?

I have travel to UAE before, and I now I want to change my name and travel to UAE again, please is there any problem I may face while travelling to UAE? the Change of name is bcoz the name on passport doesn’t tally with my qualifications and NIN

Hi Jamil, as long as you have proper documentation, including your affidavit, newspaper publication etc…I don’t think you should have a huge problem.

It might raise a red flag though, if you’re completely changing your name, and not just making a correction but I am not an immigration officer, so I don’t know how they will process it.

Thanks for the information

Pls I want to know about changing of d.o.b

Unfortunately, I don’t know about the process to do this. It is best to contact your nearest immigration office.

Nigeria ePassport Application

ePassport

The Nigerian Passport is afforded as a constitutional right to every adult Nigerian Citizen according to section (38) of the 1979 constitution which stipulates a citizen's right to freedom of movement within, into and out of Nigeria. Consequently, Most Nigerian Consular Missions have an immigration department that facilitates Standard ePassport application process either directly or in collaboration with other Nigeria Missions.

In 2019, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) launched a new "Enhanced e-Passport" by ICAO-standards and integrated with the National Identification Number (NIN)  database. Among the new features are the long awaited 10-year validity 64-page booklet e-passport . In order to phase in the new e-Passport Regime, the existing passport application backlog was cleared in may 2021 .

Although the Nigeria Immigration Service issues other types of passports and travel documents for other purposes, this particular page is about the green Nigeria Standard ePassport which is the most common and one of only 2 types of passports issued by Nigeria Missions abroad . The other is the NTP launched in March 2021.

If applicant aleady has the older Standard ePassport, they can continue to use it until 6 months before expiry. In order to apply for the new Enhanced ePassport, current ePassport must be unintentionally lost, damaged, exhaust its pages or have less than 180 days validity remaining.

These steps apply to Nigerians who apply for passport outside Nigeria. Before you start anything, find out from the nearest Nigerian Mission if they process passports. The preferred method of finding out is by calling the Embassy. See contact details of all Embassies on this link . If they accept passport applications, find out what categories of booklets are available (32 pages, 64 pages, 10-year validity passports, etc). Getting this information will help you decide what options are best for you. When you have obtained sufficient information, follow the steps below.

  • Step 1 : Gather Requirements  - Prepare all the necessary requirements for the ePassport.
  • First time applicants in Nigeria should use this link   (  https://passport.immigration.gov.ng/application  )
  • Application for renewal abroad should use this link   (  https://portal.immigration.gov.ng/passport/epass..  )
  • Step 3 : Pay Online in the same aforementioned online application process and print out payment receipt .
  • Step 4 : Affix 2 Passport Photographs  (Size 35/40mm) with white background and no head / face covers.
  • Step 5 : Submit Application with the printed form and attached requirements to the Nigerian Mission or VAC .
  • Step 6 : Book Appointment  - Follow the Mission's Instruction to book appointment for Biometric processing.
  • Step 7 : Biometric Capture  - Show up at the appointment venue for biometric capture and passport production.
  • Step 8 : Collection - It can take between hours and weeks. Call the Mission to verify it's ready before going to collect.

Important Information

The final decision on passport is made in the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Office in Abuja, not in the Embassy.

Whether adult or minor, applicant must be physically present in the Consular Mission to capture biometric data and receive passport.

Applicant's current passport will be digitally invalidated once the new one has been issued. If it has a valid visa in it, holder is only allowed to combine that old passport with the new one only for the duration of that valid visa, after which holder is expected to stop presenting it to any authority.

Section 10 of the Immigration Act 2015 prohibits holder from using more than one Nigerian Passport .

Nigerian passport change of name requirements & cost (2023).

The Nigerian passport is one of the most important documents to have when travelling in or out of the country. It is also important to ensure that the information on the passport is up to date and accurate. This article will provide an overview of the Nigerian passport change of name requirements and cost (2023). It will discuss the process involved in changing a name on a Nigerian passport, the documents required, and the cost associated with the process. It will also provide information on the processing time and other important information related to the Nigerian passport change of name.

Nigerian Passport Change Of Name Requirements & Cost (2023)

The Federal Republic of Nigeria is a West African nation that has a highly developed passport system. For Nigerian citizens, a passport is the primary form of identification and is required for international travel. As such, the Nigerian government has strict regulations regarding changes to the name that appears on the passport. In this article, we will go over the Nigerian passport change of name requirements.

First and foremost, it is important to note that a name change on a Nigerian passport can only be done if the applicant has legally changed their name. This means that the applicant must have officially changed their name through a court or government process. In some cases, a marriage certificate or divorce decree may be sufficient for this purpose.

Once an applicant has legally changed their name, they must submit their Nigerian passport and the appropriate documentation to the Nigerian Immigration Service. This includes a completed application form, the original marriage certificate or divorce decree, and two recent passport-sized photographs.

In most cases, the passport will be reissued with the new name. However, if the name change is not legally recognized, the applicant may be required to apply for a new passport. This process requires a different application form, two recent passport-sized photographs, and a letter from the court or government agency recognizing the name change.

In either case, the Nigerian Immigration Service will review the application and supporting documents and make a decision on whether or not to issue a new passport. Once approved, the new passport will be mailed to the applicant.

In summary, Nigerian passport change of name requirements are quite strict. Applicants must provide documentation that proves that the name change was legally recognized before the passport can be reissued with the new name. If the name change is not legally recognized, the applicant must apply for a new passport. In either case, the Nigerian Immigration Service will review the application and decide whether or not to issue a new passport.

How To Change Nigerian Passport Change Step By Step Guide

If you need to change your Nigerian passport, the process is relatively straightforward. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you through the process.

Step 1: Gather Required Documents

In order to change your Nigerian passport, you need to have the following documents:

  • Your current Nigerian passport
  • A completed application form
  • Two recent passport-sized photographs
  • A valid form of identification, such as a driver’s license or national identification card
  • Evidence of change of name, if applicable

Step 2: Submit Your Application

Once you have all the required documents, you need to submit your application at the Nigerian Embassy or High Commission. You can either do this in person or by post.

Step 3: Pay the Fees

The fees for changing a Nigerian passport vary depending on the type of passport you require. Make sure you have the correct fees ready when you submit your application.

Step 4: Wait for Your Passport

Once your application has been received, processed and approved, your new passport will be sent to you. This process can take up to 4 weeks.

Step 5: Renew Your Passport

Once you have received your new Nigerian passport, you need to make sure you renew it before it expires. The renewal process is similar to the one outlined above.

Cost Of Change Of Name On Nigerian Passport

The cost of changing a name on a Nigerian passport depends on the type of passport and the specific requirements of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).

For a regular Nigerian passport, the cost of changing a name is N25,000 (approx. $67). This fee is non-refundable and is payable in cash or card to the NIS.

For a diplomatic Nigerian passport, the cost of changing a name is N50,000 (approx. $134). This fee is also non-refundable and is payable in cash or card to the NIS.

In both cases, applicants will also be required to submit additional documents and paperwork in order to successfully change the name on their passport. These documents include a birth certificate, a court order, a police report, and other forms of identification.

In addition to the fee, applicants may also be required to pay for an expedited passport service, if available. This service can cost an additional N20,000 (approx. $54).

It is important to note that the cost of changing a name on a Nigerian passport may vary depending on the specific requirements of the NIS. Applicants should contact their nearest immigration office for more information.

Change Of Name On Nigerian Passport In UK

If you are a Nigerian living in the UK and would like to change your name on your Nigerian passport, you will need to follow the same process as if you were in Nigeria. You must first obtain a court order that changes your name, then you must submit the court order to the Nigerian Embassy in the UK. The Embassy will then issue a new passport in your new name.

You will need to submit the following documents to the Embassy:

  • The original court order that changes your name
  • Your existing Nigerian passport
  • Two passport-sized photographs
  • The appropriate fee

Once the Embassy has reviewed and accepted your application, a new passport in your new name will be issued.

  • Nigeria Passport Book Number: How To Locate It

By following these steps, you should be able to successfully change your Nigerian passport. Keep in mind that this process may take some time, so plan accordingly and make sure you have all the necessary documents and fees ready. Good luck!

Reasons for Change of Name

The name of a person defines him. Usually, people are given names at birth. However, bearing a particular name is not something that cannot be changed; specific events or events could cause it to change.

As diverse as Nigeria’s rich culture, there are many reasons why individuals might want to change their names.

Marriage, the dance of love, may prompt a switch to a new surname. Divorce, a chapter closing, could motivate a return to one’s pre-marital identity, a change in one’s faith could make an individual change their name to match their new belief.

Some change their names upon discovering the actual state of their paternity, and some might want a fresh start, shedding an old name like a snake sheds its skin. Whatever the reason, rest assured you’re not alone in this adventure.

We will be discussing all of that below.</p><p>Change of name in Nigeria is only allowed for citizens who are 18 years of age and above.</p><p>Anyone below the age of 18 (which is the legal age of an adult in most countries) cannot legally change their name in Nigeria unless his/her parent or guardian does it.</p><p>This means that children of people who change their names will be made to answer the new names of their parents.</p><h2>2) Citizenship</h2><p>To be able to change your name in Nigeria, you must be a citizen of Nigeria either by birth or any other naturalization methods.</p><p>This is the most important and essential requirement and foreigners who need to change their names in Nigeria can apply for citizenship before proceeding with the change of name process.</p><p>Note that foreigners with permanent residency visa or any other visa that grants them permanent or temporal residency in Nigeria are not eligible to apply for this unless they are recognized as citizens of the country.</p><h2>3) Financial and Debt Status</h2><p>This simply means that you are not allowed to change your name to escape any money you’re owing, unpaid loans, and any type of debt. It isn’t allowed.</p><h2>4) Reason For Changing Your Name</h2><p>You must present a very sensible reason for changing your name. Some of the popular reasons allowed are divorce, marriage, couples combining names (Hyphenating Surnames), religious reasons e.t.c.</p><p>Changing your name to commit a crime or escape a crime already committed is also not allowed and if caught, the person could serve several consecutive prison terms.</p><h2>5) New Name</h2><p>You’re also not allowed to change your name to something unpleasant or displeasing.</p><p>There are certain classes of names that are not allowed by the Nigerian government so make sure your new name is meaningful and doesn’t support social vices like illicit sex, drug addiction, and even racism or discrimination against a certain tribe or group of people.</p><h2>Documents Required</h2><p>Now that you’ve understood the requirements needed before applying for a change of name in Nigeria, let’s now take a look at the documents required for this process.</p><ul><li>Court Affidavit</li><li>Newspaper advertisement to indicate a change of name</li><li>Two passport photographs</li><li>Application Letter (this can be filled by the parents if the person applying is a minor)</li><li>Attestation letter from a “responsible” person</li><li>Personal details like date of birth, current age, current residential, and office address (if needed), marital status e.t.c.</li></ul><h2>Procedure For Change Of Name In Nigeria</h2><p>Below is the process of change of name in Nigeria. If you meet all the requirements mentioned above, then the procedure should be very easy to follow.</p><h2>1) Swear An Affidavit</h2><p>The first step to getting your name changed in Nigeria is to swear an Affidavit of Change of Name (Deed Pool) at any Registry of the High Court in your vicinity.</p><p>This is simply a legal document stating your intention to abandon your old name and adopt a new one. To get a copy of this affidavit, you will need to provide your old name and the new name at the request of the court officials.</p><p>It is also very important to know that you will need to attach this document wherever you’re to present any document which still has your old name on it.</p><h2>2) Announce Your New Name Publicly</h2><p>After swearing an affidavit in any high court of your choice in Nigeria, the next step will be to announce publicly that you have made the name change.</p><p>This can be easily be done on any popular newspaper company but the most common newspapers used by people who have changed their names in the past are The Punch Newspapers and The Guardian. Again, any recognized Nigerian newspaper can be used for this process.</p><h2>3) Get Your Name Printed In Nigeria’s Official Gazette</h2><p>The next step in the name change process after announcing your new name in any newspaper is to get your name printed in Nigeria’s official gazette.</p><p>This can easily be done by sending your application and other needed documents to the Department of Publication, Civil registry, Nigeria asking them to publish the newspaper advertisement you made to your change of Name.</p><p>In case you don’t understand what a gazette means, it is simply a publication that has been authorized to publish public or legal notices (change of name in this case) in a particular country.</p><p>Getting your advertisement published on Nigeria’s official gazette authenticates your change of name and it is stored in Nigeria’s database. This process can cost up to 5,000 Naira or more, so make sure you take enough cash while going.</p><h2>5) Apply For New Government IDs With Your New Name</h2><p>The final step in the change of name process is to apply for new government IDs that will reflect your new name. These government IDs can include International Passport, Driving License(s), National ID card, NIN, Permanent Voters Card (PVC) e.t.c.</p><p>When applying for these new government-issued IDs, make sure you attach a copy of the Official Gazette as this is will be used to verify that your name has been changed at the various government offices where you will be getting your new IDs.</p><p>1) How do I change my name on my Nigerian passport?</p><p>Visit the nearest Passport Office or any branch office of the Nigerian Immigration Service to get the name on your international passport changed.</p><p>Bear in mind that you would be needing a copy of the official gazette because officials at the passport office would be needing this document to verify that your new name has been approved by the Civil service.</p><p>You can read our guide on the types and prices of Nigerian international passport here .</p><p>2) How do I change my name after marriage in Nigeria?</p><p>Just follow the guide we outlined above and you should be done with that in no time.</p><p>3) How do I change my name without going to court?</p><p>You can’t. This is simply because the affidavit which will be gotten from the high court is an essential document for the change of name process to be successful.</p><p>4) How much is a newspaper name change?</p><p>Publishing your change of name advertisement on popular Nigerian newspapers like Punch, The Guardian, Vanguard Nigeria and others can cost between 5,000 to 10,000 Naira depending on your negotiating skills.</p><p>Generally, it shouldn’t cost more than 10,000 Max.</p><p>5) What are the requirements for a change of name at the bank in Nigeria?</p><p>If you have followed the normal process outlined above, then you can proceed to the bank to have your name changed on your bank account(s) and BVN. The documents required to change a name at Nigerian banks are listed below.</p><ul><li>A Government Identity card reflecting your new name</li><li>An Affidavit of Change of Name from any high court</li><li>A Newspaper publication reflecting your new name</li><li>Utility bills like Water bills, Electricity bills, Waste bill e.t.c (might be needed in some cases)</li></ul><p>6) Can I change my name online?</p><p>Sadly, you can’t change your name online in Nigeria for now. Just follow the procedure outlined above to get it done in no time.</p><h2>Wrapping Up</h2><p>Changing your name in Nigeria can be a very challenging, time consuming and expensive process if you don’t know how the procedure to follow.</p><p>In this article, we outlined how you can change you name in Nigeria in a detailed step by step guide.</p><p>To change your name in Nigeria, you first have to visit the nearest high court in your vicinity and swear an affidavit. Once that’s done, you will then need to announce your name publicly on any of the popular Nigerian newspapers and have you name added to the official Nigerian gazette.</p><p>And that’s it. If you were searching for the procedure for change of name in Nigeria, we hope you found this guide helpful.</p><h2>Related Articles:</h2><ul><li>Consat Customer Care(Play TV) Details</li><li>Who Named Nigeria & Why? Changes from last version of this document

This document has been updated with minor formatting changes.

Nigeria: names

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about names in Nigeria.

Names given and used in Nigeria depends on the religion and ethnic origin of the parents. Children can be given a combination of traditional Nigerian names and western names.

Names in Nigeria consist of:

1 or more personal forenames

father’s forename (if they are Muslim)

Where a child has multiple forenames, these may be used inconsistently, with some of the names shortened, switched or omitted (for example in a Nigeria e-passport). Family names are not shortened.

The Nigeria e-Passport contains a maximum of 26 characters (including spaces and hyphens) for a person’s name. If the holder’s names exceed 26 characters the full name will not be shown.

Change of name

Name changes are allowed in Nigeria.

When a woman marries she can:

take her husband’s surname; or,

take her husband’s first forename and combine it with his family name to make a new double-barrelled family name for herself

When changing a name by deed poll, the name needs to be declared in person, in a Nigeria court with an affidavit. Once the name is accepted by the court the identity card and passport can be updated.

Name alignment

Passports can be aligned:

online if resident in any other country (if the name is changed by marriage or divorce, or has been agreed by the Nigeria court and the customer has all the required documents)

in person at an Embassy (if the name has changed by marriage or divorce only)

Nigeria: nationality

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about nationality in Nigeria.

Dual nationality is recognised in Nigeria.

Nigeria: legitimacy

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about legitimacy in Nigeria.

Nigeria recognises a difference between legitimate and illegitimate births.

A child will be considered:

legitimate:

from birth if they are born to married parents

if on the date of the marriage, the father was domiciled in Nigeria, (if the marriage was considered legal in Nigeria)

if on the date of the marriage the father is not domiciled in Nigeria, but the law of the country where the father was domiciled recognises the concept of subsequent legitimation by statutory marriage

illegitimate if they are born to:

unmarried parents

parents whose marriage is not recognised by Nigeria law

fathers who do not fit the requirements for legitimation under subsequent marriage

unmarried parents who later marry under native law and customs

Nigeria: adoption

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about adoption in Nigeria.

Adoption is allowed in Nigeria.

Nigeria: surrogacy

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about surrogacy in Nigeria.

There are no laws governing surrogacy in Nigeria.

Nigeria: gender recognition

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about gender recognition in Nigeria.

Transgender citizens are not recognised in Nigeria.

Nigeria: civil partnerships and marriage

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about civil partnerships and marriage in Nigeria.

Same sex relationships and civil partnerships are not recognised in Nigeria.

Opposite sex marriage in Nigeria

Marriages in Nigeria can be contracted under:

native law and customs

Islamic law

Christian law

Native law and customs

Native law and customs allow polygamy, provided the husband’s existing marriages are under native law and customs. If either party is already in a statutory marriage, any subsequent marriage will not be valid (while the statutory marriage continues).

The president of a customary court can annul a marriage contracted only under native law and customs.

Customary marriage registration is not compulsory in Nigeria. Several states in Nigeria have made laws permitting customary marriages to be registered by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Where customary law marriages are celebrated in such states, the parties may be required to produce a certificate from the Registrar as proof of the marriage they contracted.

Polyandry is not permitted under native law and customs.

Proxy marriage is recognised according to native law.

Nigeria recognises marriages performed under Islamic Sharia Law. These are not recorded by state registrars. Nigeria recognises polygamous marriages conducted under Sharia law provided the parties are not currently in a marriage registered with a Registrar under the Marriage Act.

Civil and Christian law

Marriages in a federal register office (civil) or a Christian church are legally recognised.

Nigeria: documents

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about documents in Nigeria.

Nigeria authorities do not laminate documents.

Birth certificates

Prior to July 1988, the registration of births was a function of local government.

From July 1988, the registration of births and deaths has been the responsibility of the National Population Commission (NPC). All births must be registered with the NPC in the state they were born, where a birth certificate will be issued.

Replacement birth certificates can be obtained.

If a mistake is identified on a certificate, it will be corrected and reissued.

The NPC may issue Attestations of Birth, which are different to a standard birth certificate. An Attestation of Birth will be issued to people over the age of 18 years whose birth was not registered.

Hospital notification records exist, and the parents may be given a certificate or letter confirming the birth. Hospitals maintain birth registers that parents can get copies of.

Marriage certificates

Marriage certificates for civil or registered marriages can be issued by either a:

Federal Registrar

registrar of the local government where the marriage takes place

If the original marriage certificate is lost, only the Federal Registrar can issue a certified copy to replace it.

There is no law in Nigeria which makes the registration of customary or Islamic marriages compulsory, unlike a civil or Christian marriage which requires registration under the Marriage Act. Several states in Nigeria have made laws permitting customary marriages to be registered by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Civil or Christian marriage certificates include a column headed ‘condition’, where the registrar should record whether the bride and groom are bachelor / spinster, divorced, widowed. Entries in this column which state ‘same husband’ and ‘same wife’ denote that the couple have already married under native law and customs.

Marriage certificates for an Islamic marriage will be issued by the mosque; these may be in English or Arabic.

Death certificates

All deaths must be reported to the National Population Commission (NPC) within 24 hours of the death. Late registrations are allowed.

Identity documents

There are 3 types of identity card issued in Nigeria. These are:

National identity number cards (NIN) to Nigerian citizens

Combined Residence Permit and Aliens Card (CERPAC) to foreign nationals, resident in Nigeria

voters registration cards

NIN cards can be updated outside of Nigeria and match the personal details on the passport exactly.

Nigeria issues biometric passports to its citizens. These are identified by the ECOWAS logo and the biometric symbol on the front cover.

The Nigeria e-Passport contains a maximum of 26 characters (including spaces and hyphens) for a person’s name.
