Loughborough University graduates earn more than East Midlands average
L oughborough University graduates were earning more on average than those from other East Midlands universities five years after graduation, new figures show.
A spokesperson for money website Save the Student said students are now more confident about finding work after leaving university.
Department for Education figures show first degree graduates from Loughborough University had a median annual salary of £37,600 in 2021-22, five years after leaving their course.
Loughborough University graduates who did courses in architecture, building and planning were earning the most – £52,200 on average. At the opposite end of the spectrum were their peers graduating with a degree in performing arts, taking home around £27,000 a year.
This was the joint-highest average salary from all universities in the East Midlands, which had average earnings of £29,600.
For most providers and subjects, graduate earnings have increased at or above the rate of inflation since 2015-16.
Graduates from almost three quarters of universities had median earnings at least 13% higher in 2021-22 than in 2015-16.
Tom Allingham, communications director at Save the Student said: "On the face of it, this data paints a promising picture for graduates.
"However, it's worth noting that the dataset only runs to the 2021-22 tax year, and therefore doesn't include much of the sky-high rates of inflation seen throughout much of 2022 and 2023."
He said it's not yet possible to say whether this summer's graduates will enjoy the same inflation-matching earnings as their predecessors.
"Nonetheless, the future looks bright for many graduates – particularly those from STEM subjects – and perhaps explains why in our own research, the proportion of students confident about finding work after leaving university has increased dramatically in the post-Covid era, up from 38% in 2021 to 58% in 2023," Mr Allingham added.
The figures also show female graduates from the Loughborough University were earning a median salary of £33,900 five years into their career, while men were paid £40,900. It meant men earned 17% more than women.

Loughborough University and UCL join forces to create new opportunities for local graduates
20 May 2024
East London graduates today got a double boost with the announcement that Loughborough University and UCL will be working together to offer careers workshops and scholarship opportunities for further study to local people.
Since its inception in 2015 Loughborough University London has offered a 100% scholarship for local people to come and study at its London campus on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park
In 2023 UCL began offering its own 100% scholarship to study a postgraduate programme on its newly opened UCL East campus on the Park and at its School of Management in Canary Wharf.
To support local graduates to access these opportunities, the two universities have today announced that they are joining forces to offer a combined personal and professional development workshop package for interested recent graduates.
The aim of the Inspiring Success initiative is to encourage people to test drive the experience of studying at UCL or Loughborough London, while also boosting their personal and professional development.
Vice Chancellor of Loughborough University Professor Nick Jennings said:
“ We at Loughborough are delighted to be working with our friends and colleagues at UCL to expand opportunities for east Londoners. We know that east London is a hot bed of talent and our collaboration will enable more local people to access the education offered by UCL and Loughborough. Connecting with this talent is a big part of why we have established our campuses on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. We are delighted to be collaborating to extend this offer.”
Professor Paola Lettieri, Pro-Provost UCL East, said:
“ UCL is proud to be working with east Londoners to join the embedded culture to develop innovation, enterprise, learning and skills. We are excited to be joining forces with Loughborough University London to connect more local graduates to the opportunities we have across our campuses in ways that are accessible and relevant to them. Our partnership is founded on a common goal to have a positive impact on the communities we serve. This is a real win-win for all involved.”
The four workshops will offer an opportunity for unemployed and underemployed local graduates to invest in their personal and professional development. Over four evenings in June they will be challenged to undertake a series of intensive, career focused activities. The workshops will also give an insight into what it is like to study one of the vast range of postgraduate degrees on offer at the UCL East or Loughborough University London campuses on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
These include the MSc in Disability, Design and Innovation , whicih is a joint programme developed and delivered by UCL, Loughborough University London and UAL’s London College of Fashion for the Global Disability Innovation Hub at UCL East
Vanessa Brown, who grew up in Hackney and is a former recipient of the Loughborough Scholarship said “These scholarships are a truly transformational opportunity for local graduates. Since graduating from Loughborough, I have embarked on my PhD following a passion ignited by my studies. I would encourage any local graduates to take a look at what doors these workshops could open for them.”
UCL is supporting Inspiring Success in conjunction with the Foundation for Future London (FFL), as one element of a range of activity designed to create new jobs, learning, training and educational programmes for people in Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest.
Since starting its programme in 2015 Loughborough has been kindly supported by a range of local organisations and businesses including the London Legacy Development Corporation and more recently Sports Interactive and West Ham Community Development Foundation .

Andrei Malkov started his career with the award of MSs (Hons) from the Moscow State University (Russia) in 1982, followed by a PhD from the Institute of Organo-Element Compounds RAS (Moscow, Russia) in 1986. He continued his work in the area of organometallic synthesis and catalysis, which intensified with his move to the UK in 1992 where he had two postdoctoral spells at the UEA (1992-1995) and the University of Leicester (1995-1999). He started his independent career at the University of Glasgow in 1999 where he rose through the ranks to become a Reader. In 2008 he was appointed Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Loughborough University.
When the PhD path leads to career struggles
A doctoral degree is a major commitment. Think carefully.
I appreciated reading Kara Miller’s The Big Idea column “PhD: Pretty heavily disappointed” (Business, May 22), about people with doctoral degrees struggling to build careers in academia. It made me think back to a conversation I had when I was about to graduate from high school.
I happened to run into a former track coach of mine, and as we were reminiscing he asked me what I planned as a major in college. “History,” I responded. He said, “Why don’t you take some computer classes also? It never hurts to be able to do something useful.”
I did not reflect on his motivation at the time, but my track coach was a young guy, and he was probably giving me advice straight from his own life, as a parent trying to raise his own young children. I did take computer classes in college and ultimately received a PhD in chemical engineering. I always remember that conversation as being a kind of turning point.
Earning a doctoral degree is a life commitment of great proportion. It can take, as Miller notes, between four and seven years. If we think of working life as roughly between the ages of 22 and 65, then a PhD requires more than 10 percent of a person’s working life. People need to think carefully about that investment.

Two powerful arguments in favor of the path of science, technology, engineering, and math are that there tend to be more STEM jobs for PhDs, and many universities’ STEM departments are generous in covering their PhD students’ tuition and cost of studies, including a stipend toward food, rent, and other expenses.

Not much has changed in 30 years
As I prepared to graduate in 1995 with a doctor of education degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, my mother memorably said to me, “Of my four children, you are the one with the most education and the smallest salary.” Apparently not much has changed in 30 years.
I must congratulate these students, however, on following their passion rather than following the money. I can’t help but think that their lives, though stressful, may contain greater happiness.

Lawyers & electricians & philosophers, oh my!
Kara Miller’s column on the career challenges for people with doctoral degrees generated more than 260 comments on Boston.Globe.com. The following is an edited sample of readers’ reactions:
Lots of law school grads are underemployed as well. (PL)
So true, PL. The market in Massachusetts is flooded with talented lawyers seeking work. (Roforma)
Supply and demand, the market at work. (guk)
Investing in education and research in all fields is the hallmark of a society with staying power. Disinvesting from these endeavors signals decline and decay. (Massachusetts citizen)
Electricians, plumbers, mechanics, and other skilled technical professions have no problems getting $100k jobs with great benefits. (ramsen)
Not enough turnover from tenured professors, leaving little space for new faculty. Although the tenured, well-established professors are needed, it’s the junior faculty who are hungry and with new ideas that help build new programs. The whole graduate program model is a bad model. I worked two jobs, had my tuition and some type of minimal student health insurance and could barely cover the rent with my stipend, and the second job paid for everything else. Though I was working on many faculty projects, it was the faculty who said this would be good for me. Never did they say it was also good for them. (TravelerofNJ2)
I just retired from a tenured faculty position in science. I’m in my early 70s. I have colleagues who are still doing what they do well into their 70s, a couple approaching 80. There is no active incentive from the university to move the older faculty on, to make way for a new generation. (Lola-lola)
The next step is for adjuncts to go on strike across the nation and hold colleges and universities accountable. The current system is completely absurd. (Wordsmith2358)
Universities should be required to release disclosure data about the fate of their PhD graduates. (davidman820)
I knew an attorney who managed a Cheesecake Factory. She had worked in food services through school. As an attorney, she really did not make that much money and was not doing the field of law of her choice. How many real estate closings can you do without dying of boredom? She went into management in the food industry and makes the same salary. (Antietem)
It was always a question and puzzling to me why people study philosophy. (Blazer27)
