2024 Essay Contest Topic

This year, AFSA celebrates the 100th anniversary of the United States Foreign Service. Over the last century, our diplomats and development professionals have been involved in groundbreaking events in history – decisions on war and peace, supporting human rights and freedom, creating joint prosperity, reacting to natural disasters and pandemics and much more. As AFSA looks back on this century-long history, we invite you to join us in also looking ahead to the future. This year students are asked to explore how diplomats can continue to evolve their craft to meet the needs of an ever-changing world that brings fresh challenges and opportunities to the global community and America’s place in it.

Over the past 100 years the Foreign Service has faced a multitude of challenges such as world war, terrorism, nuclear proliferation, humanitarian disasters, global pandemics, and economic crises. In a 1,000-1,500-word essay please identify what you believe will be the biggest challenge to face the Foreign Service in the future. The essay will describe this challenge and clearly define how American diplomats can help mitigate it.

Successful essays will use past or current diplomatic efforts to support what you believe to be the best course of action to tackle this obstacle.

Saint Xavier University (SXU) College of Arts and Sciences announces the annual competition for the Hassan (Husni) and Safia Haddad Peace Award and Scholarship. Both the award and scholarship are given annually to a student who prepares the best essay on the pursuit of peace. The award consists of a plaque and a scholarship of $1,300 towards future tuition. Applicants must be degree-seeking students who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at SXU, and who will be enrolled full-time in the academic year.

Applicants are asked to describe and analyze an experience (or a sequence of related experiences) during the course of your University education that helped you better understand the complexities of and paths toward achieving peace in the world today.   • Insights you gained from particular texts you were assigned to read;

This award honors the lives and contributions of Professors Hassan and Safia Haddad, whose teaching and research across a range of disciplines enriched the Saint Xavier community for four decades. Safia Haddad chaired the Foreign Languages Department for 26 years, taught French, and the sociology of education, and truly embodied an international culture to countless students. This award and scholarship are reflections of the Haddads' enduring commitment to peace as well as the global reach of their scholarship, influence, and circle of friends.

International Peace Scholarship Fund

The P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund (IPS) is a fund established in 1949 to provide scholarships for women from other countries for graduate study in the U.S. or Canada. The maximum award amount is $12,500.

Fostering Global Peace Through Education

The P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship (IPS) Fund provides scholarships to international women pursuing graduate degrees in the U.S. and Canada to foster global peace through education. IPS recipients carry the spirit of P.E.O. back to their home countries where the degrees they have earned positively impact people’s lives around the globe.

Education is Fundamental to World Peace and Understanding

Since 1949, the P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship (IPS) Fund has been helping women from around the world pursue graduate study in the U.S. and Canada and since 1951, IPS has also assisted international Cottey College students pursuing degrees. Today, the International Peace Scholarship Fund is open to:

  • Women outside the United States and Canada who are seeking advanced degrees from accredited colleges or universities in the U.S. or Canada
  • International students attending Cottey College

When IPS recipients return to their home countries, they positively impact their communities through their education.

IPS’s roots stem from the vision of one of P.E.O.’s founders, Franc Roads Elliott, when she introduced a resolution for international peace at the 1919 Convention of Supreme Chapter. Her vision for P.E.O. to join a movement to promote peace was realized when IPS was established as a project in 1949.

Be a Part of Fostering Global Peace

Supporting women's education has a ripple effect, positively impacting their lives and the world around us. The P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship (IPS) Fund plays a vital role in empowering women and fostering peace around the world through education.

IPS scholarships provide more than just financial assistance; a community of P.E.O.s rally behind each scholarship recipient to support them with the loving concern that’s a fundamental part of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Recipients are often surprised by the non-tangible benefits of an IPS scholarship, namely the support and encouragement from P.E.O. sisters that is invaluable to them while far from home. This experience amplifies the power of IPS as it promotes global understanding in their relationships with other people for the rest of their lives, which is ultimately the basis for world peace.

We believe that education is fundamental to world peace and understanding. When we help international women achieve their educational goals, we're also contributing to their families, communities, home nations and, ultimately, the world at large.

With a Named Scholarship, you can a make a special gift to support the P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship (IPS) Fund. These scholarships can be named in honor or memory of someone special.

A gift of at least $12,500 from an individual, a chapter or group of chapters or a state/provincial/district chapter may become a Named Scholarship upon request of the donor. The donation pays for the entire scholarship for an IPS recipient. The IPS Board of Trustees selects the recipient for the Named Scholarship from the list of students after scholarships have been awarded and accepted. A special effort is made by the board to select an outstanding student who is attending school in a state or province near the donor.

The IPS trustees award these prestigious scholarships to top IPS recipients to assist them in the completion of their graduate degrees with the expectation of returning to their home countries to Foster Global Peace Through Education.

McKeesport College Club presents annual scholarships

Three seniors at McKeesport Area High School were each awarded $1,000 scholarships.

The McKeesport College Club gathered Wednesday evening at the Youghiogheny Country Club for its annual scholarship banquet.

The club’s scholarship program is its oldest and largest community service project. Each year since 1939, the college club has awarded cash scholarships to young women who are graduating from McKeesport Area High School and plan to attend college in the fall.

Diana Lewis serves on the club’s scholarship committee. Lewis said the hardest part of the job is deciding who should receive the awards from the many talented young women who applied.

This year, 15 young women applied for the scholarship.

The committee looks at many factors beside the applicant’s grade point average. They use a spread sheet which factors in the applicant’s extracurricular activities, their community involvement and leadership. The young women each write an essay describing their qualifications for the award and their plans for the future.

They are also asked to provide a recommendation letter from a teacher or other responsible adult. The applicants are interviewed and given the opportunity to explain why they feel they should receive the award. Lewis said the quality of this year’s applicants made this year’s selection particularly difficult.

After a few opening remarks by outgoing club president Paula Robinson, and an invocation offered by Carol Kurinko, the club members, and their guests enjoyed a buffet.

The 2024 scholarship awardees were then each given a $1,000 scholarship.

This year’s awardees are:

• Christina Wos, a member of the band and orchestra at McKeesport Area High School. Wos will be attending Seton Hill University in Greensburg in the fall where she will major in music education. She hopes to share her passion for music as a public school music teacher.

Kaylee Charles of Versailles is a member of student council and plays on the basketball team. She is graduating second in her class and plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh, Greensburg campus to pursue a degree in nursing.

• Isabella Wanless, an outstanding student, particularly in the sciences. She will be attending the Indiana University of Pennsylvania to pursue a degree in biology. Wanless plans to pursue her education after college and her dream is to become an environmental lawyer.

In her concluding remarks, Lewis quoted the late entertainer, Judy Garland, advising the scholarship recipients, “always be a first rate version of yourself and not a second-rate version of someone else.” She said that the winners received a corsage, a college club pen, a framed certificate and a keepsake intended to inspire the winners during their college years.

The meeting concluded with Robinson symbolically handing over the gavel to the College Club’s new president Judith Bookhammer. Bookhammer thanked Robinson for her service as the club’s president for the last two years.

As a thank you gift, Robinson was presented with a bouquet of roses and a gift certificate to her favorite jewelry store. Robinson thanked everyone who helped to make her tenure as president a success.

The College Club is an organization of college educated women dedicated to supporting education in McKeesport and the surrounding areas. In addition to serving the community, the clubs members share friendship, networking opportunities and social activities.

Membership is open to any woman with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Members don’t have to be residents of McKeesport.

Anyone interested in becoming a member of the McKeesport College Club should contact the club’s membership chairperson Jo Ellen Kenney at [email protected].

The Impact of Professional Scholarship Essay Writing Services on Academic Success

I t’s hard to overestimate the usefulness of writing services for someone who needs a good essay for a scholarship application. At the same time, there are some concerns about the probable negative impact of writing services on academic success. Let’s consider both the potential negative and positive impact of a scholarship essay writing service to decide what’s stronger.

One of the most widespread concerns about the impact of essay writing services is the ethical side of use. Evidently, it is improper if people will provide someone’s work as their own. Even though such concern cannot be called groundless, it’s a matter of choice. Writing service is a tool, and it’s only the customer's choice how to use it. A person can buy a knife to cut fruits and vegetables or to take someone's life. This is not about the tool but about the ethics and decisions of the particular person who uses the tool.

Another concern is related to the dependency. When people overuse writing services and outsource their own tasks to other experts, it rather decreases their own skills that ought to be developed with the assignments. It’s once again about human conscience and ethics. In this context, it can be useful to compare writing services with coffee. Sometimes, this drink can be very useful to help you wake up or not fall asleep for longer. However, with excessive use, it can be harmful to health and be addictive. And, if you are regularly using coffee to wake yourself up or to stay awake, you probably have to reconsider your time management.

One more concern is about the money. Writing services obviously don’t provide their help for free. Hence, the frequent use of it can cause a financial burden for people who use such services. Thinking this way, one can assume that any type of purchase can cause a financial burden. Most writing services insist on price transparency and the absence of any hidden additional increase in the price. One can see the price before placing an order and deciding whether this money will harm the budget.

As you can see, although the concerns about writing services aren’t baseless, they’re more about the weakness of human nature than about the negative impact of writing services themselves. People who can act unethically will find their way with or without writing services. And if a person has trouble managing money it will be evident from the different aspects of life, not only the use of writing services. You can be careful using writing services, but not more careful than with anything else in life.

Except for the concerns considered above, writing services can also positively impact academic success when used properly. A person who needs to write a scholarship essay often faces the problem of procrastination and blank page syndrome. In such a case, help from a writing service can be incredibly useful to overcome the problems. A person can use the paper from the writing service as an example to follow or, in contrast, decide that everything must be written differently. Most importantly, one will start working on the scholarship essay instead of waiting for inspiration or being lost in anxiety.

  • The positive impact on mental health comes from the previous advantage. Applying for the scholarship is a stressful process. A person is concerned about all the papers that must be gathered and forms to be filled out in the proper way, about the future if the scholarship will be obtained, and about the development of the events if not. Writing services that provide personalized examples of scholarship essays can help reduce stress and anxiety and, hence, have at least a small positive impact on mental health.
  • Expert guidance can be crucial for a person who needs a scholarship. Yes, you can find free examples of scholarship essays on the web, but you might not be sure which is most suitable for your particular case. Writing services have professionals who often write scholarship essays and know their specifics. In addition, a personalized example is the most useful one to understand what and how you can write to succeed.
  • Time management is the last but not the least point in this list. Writing services have short deadlines of just a few hours, which allows a person to get a ready example on the same day it was ordered. This saves time that a person might spend reading and understanding the nuances of the scholarship essay. Instead of that, one can take this time for other no less essential papers or activities related to getting a scholarship.

Final words

As one can see, scholarship essay writing services can potentially negatively and positively impact academic success. Such services can be a powerful tool to save time, avoid stress, and get a well-written personalized example of a scholarship essay. However, as well as in the case of any tool, it must be used wisely and ethically.

National Nurses Month: Donor Spotlight

Vahan Gureghian, center front, attended a luncheon celebrating the 2024 Gureghian Scholarship awardees at the School of Nursing and Health Studies

By Robin Shear [email protected] 05-13-2024

When it comes to better health, University of Miami parents and donors Danielle and Vahan Gureghian are firm believers in the old saying, “There’s no place like home.”

The Gureghians established their home care services agency in South Florida with the mission of “improving the quality of life for all in need of home health care.”

One way they have found to support their business’s mission in the community at large is by designating funds for nursing students at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies (SONHS).

In the past six months, the Gureghians, owners of Independence Home Health, have awarded one-time scholarships to ten students completing the 12-month Accelerated BSN program at SONHS.

Each recipient was selected based on academic achievement and the content of an essay they submitted addressing the role of home health care in the modern medical landscape.

For the Gureghians, home health care has the potential to ensure “a safe, comfortable, and independent quality of life,” according to their company website. “ We believe superior health care allows people to age with dignity in the privacy of their own home while simultaneously providing comfort and peace of mind to loving family members.”

As such, they were excited to support nursing students who demonstrated a keen understanding of and affinity for the principles and values related to home health care nursing services.

Andrea Zdrnja was near the end of her third and final semester in the ABSN program when she learned of her scholarship from the Gureghians. “This will help me have more time to concentrate on my studies and be able to afford all the books and school supplies needed,” said Zdrnja, who will graduate on May 10.

For her scholarship-winning essay, Zdrnja recounted her experience shadowing a home health care nurse. “Helping patients on their road to health or maintenance of independence in their own homes was why and how I fell in love with the nursing profession,” she explained. “I remember visiting all those families, checking on clients, and witnessing them improving after every visit. We not only helped them regain their health, but did so in the comfort of their homes, with immense help from their loved ones.”

Another scholarship recipient graduating this month, Britany Tolmachewich, said she chose to go into the health field because, “At the end of the day, a lot of people just need someone to be kind to them.”

The “kindness and grace” evident in the Gureghians’ support reaffirmed Tolmachewich’s resolve “to provide quality care and empathy to my future patients,” she said. “Receiving this scholarship from the Gureghians has given me further encouragement to chase my dreams and further my education in nursing. I cannot wait to make a difference in the lives of so many diverse individuals.”

In her essay, Tolmachewich conveyed with a depth of sensitivity the value of home-based care.

“So often, when people are in strange or stressful environments, one universal exclamation that most humans all share in stating is, ‘I cannot wait to go home,’ and it is because no other spot can provide such a place to be openly vulnerable and shielded from the dangers of society. As we explore the complexities of modern existence, the significance of bringing health care to our doorsteps has become increasingly important,” she wrote. “Being at home creates an environment and sense of tranquility where recovery is not just a medical process but a holistic journey of well-being that no other place can provide.”

Not only did Tolmachewich see the power and dignity afforded by home health care services in her own family, both older and younger generations, she studied practices in places where people are living much longer and better than average, known as “Blue Zones” and noted that home health care had an important role to play in those communities as well. As a result, she sees home health care “as a beacon guiding a path toward a more compassionate and sustainable future,” and one she sees herself contributing to as she begins her journey into the nursing profession.

Like Tolmachewich and Zdrnja, all ten award-winning essay writers articulated significant potential benefits associated with home health care, particularly in the context of an aging population and a global rise of chronic disease. They cited key benefits such as promoting patient-centered care, reducing risk of infection and other adverse events, alleviating family burden, fostering a sense of independence and connection, addressing excessive cost burdens of inpatient care, transforming the patient-provider relationship, and improving overall mental and emotional well-being, among others.

In addition to giving generous financial support for nursing students, the Gureghians have shown an interest in getting to know the students as well, attending a luncheon held on campus for each group of recipients to date.

“Meeting Mr. Gureghian made the entire experience so much more valuable,” said Janet Lee, B.S.N. ’23, who was in the inaugural group of scholarship recipients. “That personal connection was a powerful one. He shared his insights with us and was incredibly encouraging and thoughtful.”

Lee’s fellow scholarship recipient Ana Luisa Ulivi Azpurua, B.S.N. ’23, who graduated in December, added that the couple’s generous commitment to educating a new generation of nurse leaders “will truly make a difference in the lives of many patients who are in need.”
