Chhichhore movie review: Sushant Singh Rajput, Shraddha Kapoor deliver relevant film with important message

Chhichhore movie review: the sushant singh rajput-shraddha kapoor film takes you on a nostalgia trip to your college days with an engaging narrative and flashback sequences..

Chhichhore Director - Nitesh Tiwari Cast - Sushant Singh Rajput, Shraddha Kapoor, Varun Sharma, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Prateik Babbar, Naveen Polishetty, Tushar Pandey

Chhichhore movie review: Sushant Singh Rajput stars in another winner from Nitesh Tiwari.

An ode to college-time friendships, romances, ragging, fights, competitions and countless memories, Chhichhore is a riot of emotions, and takes you on a nostalgic ride. It’s a relevant film with a rather important message conveyed through an engaging narrative. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari of Dangal fame, Chhichhore is high on content and humour packaged so well that it stays with you for a very long time.

The story is simple — a bunch of engineering students and their journey from being losers to choosers. Sushant Singh Rajput (Annirudh) and Shraddha Kapoor (Maya) play a divorced couple, and they have a reunion of sorts with their college buddies, though in rather unwanted circumstances. Together, they recall and relive their old college memories, the good and bad days spent almost 20 years ago. The screenplay takes a trip down memory lane through college hostels, sports grounds and canteen conversations; switch to present day and you see the same camaraderie in their friendship that was forged in college.

Brilliant writing loaded with comic punches, one-liners and genuinely funny jokes makes Chhichhore a winner. Full credit to the writers for ensuring that the humour is not even remotely slapstick. For instance, when Varun Sharma’s character compares spotting a girl in an engineering college to Halley’s Comet that is visible every 75 years, it isn’t demeaning women but proof of clever writing. Keeping the storytelling simple, Nitesh made an intelligent move to weave flashback sequences into the present day, and keep audiences attentive. Though mostly predictable, the build-up towards the climax manages to look intriguing.

Among the cast, you see Varun Sharma (Sexa), Tahir Raj Bhasin (Derek), Naveen Polishetty (ACID), Tushar Pandey (Mummy) and Saharsh Shukla (Bevda) aptly fitting in their respective parts and doing full justice to their screen-time. The way each character is introduced in the film with minute detailing and individual traits, it makes you sit up and take notice.

movie review of chhichhore

There are performances that stand out without screaming from the rooftops. From playing Chucha in Fukrey to Sexa in this film, Varun nails it with an impressive performance, yet again. So comfortable with his body and style of dialogue delivery, he knows when and how to throw his weight around, quite literally. Sushant looks good as a young college student but in his ‘40s, he is rather unconvincing and a misfit. Shraddha’s character, it seems, has been written with least amount of interest. Although her screen presence is felt each time she’s in the frame, she hardly gets any dialogues and you ask yourself ‘was she even needed in the film’? Even the chemistry between Sushant and Shraddha is unconvincing and their scenes together flirting or comforting each other look rather juvenile. Prateik Babbar, who delivered an intense performance as the popular guy and a baddie in college, could have been given a little more screen time.

There is an extensive use of prosthetic makeup to show the characters ageing onscreen. While some are shown going half-bald, others decide to grow their tresses. There’s one guy with an American accent too -- he has stayed in New York for 20 years, after all. However, in Shraddha Kapoor’s case, the only transition that shows her going from her 20s to 40s is midi-dresses turning into cotton suits and saris. Sadly, so little imagination there!

Thankfully, Pritam’s music and background score by Sameer Uddin does not sound forced at any point and beautifully blends with the narrative. The song Fikar Not in the end credits is a refreshing change from the high-pitched item songs or over dramatized romantic numbers and is brilliantly choreographed.

A must-watch with your college friends, Chhichhore is relatable and relevant. Watch it for its uncomplicated screenplay, gripping narrative and some stellar performances that leave you in stitches.

Chhichhore Movie Review: Sushant Singh Rajput and Shraddha Kapoor film is no 3 Idiots

  • Chhichhore marks the second directorial venture of Nitesh Tiwari.
  • Nitesh Tiwari's first film as a director was the blockbuster Dangal starring Aamir Khan.
  • Sushant Singh Rajput and Shraddha Kapoor are the lead actors in Chhichhore, which hit the screens today.

movie review of chhichhore

Sushant Singh Rajput

When asked about the best days of our life, most of us go into flashback mode and think of our school and college days. The time when friends were family and midnight shenanigans and midnight cravings went hand-in-hand. Nostalgia, accompanied with envy, hits you the moment you see a group of carefree college students. Because time moves in one direction.

Nitesh Tiwari, an IIT Bombay passout, taps into this nostalgia and presents us Chhichhore, to evoke our college memories. College dramas are something that the audience, no matter the generation, have always leaned on.

It's the safest bet for a successful film. Some hostel pranks, a college romance, promises to keep in touch with friends, a sports tournament, a tragedy - and you have got yourself a full-on entertainer. (And once in a lifetime, you also have a 3 Idiots. But once in a lifetime.)

Director Nitesh Tiwari, back on the director's chair after the massive blockbuster Dangal, does all of that. He is that first-bencher who would meticulously take down all notes point-by-point and vomit them back on the answer sheet sans any creativity. Chhichhore is a classic case of that very learning the formula to success by rote but not knowing how to apply it in real life syndrome.

The film starts with Aniruddh and Maya's (Sushant Singh Rajput and Shraddha Kapoor) son involved in a tragedy after failing to secure a coveted seat in India's top engineering college, unlike his father and mother, who were rank holders. This leads to a reunion between Aniruddh and his college friends - Varun Sharma as Sexa, Tahir Raj Bhasin as Derek, Naveen Polishetty as Acid, Tushar Pandey as Mummy and Saharsh Shukla as Bevda.

The gang starts telling stories of their eventful college life to the kid, who can speak clearly in the film despite the circumstances, hoping that their story can improve his condition. So we go into flashback and see the actors narrate to Aniruddh and Maya's son, and us, tales of their lively college life.

The tone of the film is as inconsistent as it can be. In one scene, you will see Sushant sobbing while talking to his son, and in the next, he is planning pranks with his friends in college. The transition is not seamless. Director Nitesh Tiwari aims to have both - past and present - tracks run parallel to each other, but it simply doesn't work. The sudden change of the background score from melancholic tunes to upbeat music too doesn't help the audience understand what Nitesh is trying to do with the film.

College dramas like these require strong performances, with the story needing the lead actors help propel the film. But in Chhichhore, Sushant and Shraddha will leave you hanging. It's the film's supporting cast, a shoutout to Varun Sharma, that carries the burden of the entire film on their shoulders.

Sushant's performance as the middle-aged father is nothing less than a caricature. Even when the doctor explains to him his son's condition, he sits there with a blank expression. He sobs, tries to wipe his tear-less eyes, but just fails to convince the audience that he is heartbroken.

Shraddha, as Maya, isn't much convincing either. The actress has one expression for every mood, and by now, we have seen too much of that one expression. Along with that, the film's script also limits her character to being just a pretty face who is always present to cheer for her boyfriend from the stands.

Varun Sharma delivers yet another remarkable performance in Chhichhore. He gets the best punchlines in the film and he delivers them in his own unique style. Naveen Polishetty and Tushar Pandey also leave an imprint with their performances.

The writing isn't all too sloppy. Some scenes will manage to you crack you up, but they are stuffed with cliches. Imagine every punchline that a college drama can have and some more. Now imagine all of them stuffed into a film. Chhichhore is that.

Chhichhore delivers an important message on exam pressure, quite literally, with Sushant enunciating the message in a speech just in case you didn't get it even after 2 hours of seeing the same. The film feels like a missed opportunity. Director Nitesh Tiwari had a subject that appealed to all generations, but he fails to create that magic that a memorable college drama should have had.

Chhichhore is a one-time watch and is for those who are are still hung up on their college life. But it is no 3 Idiots. You might want to call your college buddies after the film.

2.5 stars out of 5 for Chhichhore.

Chhichhore Review: A Campus Comedy Wrapped In A Yarn Of Friendship And Failure

Chhichhore is an emotional roller coaster of the nostalgia, real-life struggles, college romance, ragging, competition, fights and all wrapped cautiously in a yarn of friendship..

Ten years ago when '3 Idiots' happened we got a balanced dose of reality and expectation when three non-conformist engineering students questioned outmoded practices, choosing to live life on his own terms and chartering new roads that consciously skirt the rat race. Switch back to 2019 and we have the same backdrop, a larger set of friends who revisit their college lives (hostel to be precise) to counsel an ambitious child on the hospital bed that there is a thin life between losers and winners and the journey of life is indeed more important than the destination.   Chhichhore is an emotional roller coaster of the nostalgia, real-life struggles, college romance, ragging, competition, fights and all wrapped cautiously in a yarn of friendship.    Nitesh Tiwari’s movie starts with a nervous JEE aspirant reeling under the pressure of rank holder parents, desperate to make his cut at the entrance exam so much that it drives him to the edge. What we expect and see is a bunch of engineering students and their journey from being losers to eager beaver who chooses not let results judge their efforts coming back together after 20 years to preach what they learnt the hard way.   Sushant Singh Rajput (Annirudh) and Shraddha Kapoor (Maya) play a divorced couple, and they have a reunion of sorts with their college buddies, though in rather unwanted circumstances.   The screenplay takes a trip down memory lane through hostel corridors, library, sports grounds and canteen conversations and an annual sports competition that determines the climax of the movie and is quite realised.   Many of the scenarios are outright hilarious – like the in which a student is made to write cheer and chants using effigies of professors, one in which the alcoholic friend is thrashed during a train journey or the one in which a "senior performs pole dance with a “freshy” perform a pole dance.    Clever puns, one-liners, some genuinely funny jokes and great performances by assorted cast overpowers Chicchoore even when the plot appears unrealistic especially when Sushant Singh Rajput (Anni) attempts to heal an unconscious mind with the art of storytelling and it works more than real medicines or the ‘loser’s team smart antics like sledging or faking injury during tournament getting unnoticed by the team of bad boys till the final day. Even more unrealistic is the receding hairlines of all of the cast and Shraddha’s long tresses with a few grey stands, maybe the reason why Sexa (Varun Sharma) saying ‘abhi bhi demand main hai’   In spite of a few hiccups, Chhichhore manages to shine with its comic timings that are at a borderline of slapstick humour.   Sushant Singh Rajput delivers a master performance first as a college Romeo and then as a single parent grappling with a broken marriage and trying his best to be a cool dad, and not without Chhichhore's supporting characters. Varun Sharma as Sexa, the porn-obsessed good-at-heart cutie will keep you entertained even at few drag moments in the film. Tahir Raj Bhasin Derek, the intense, brooding senior who's been trying to cut off the tag of a 'loser' since the past three years has a Shah Rukh Khan hangover that you cannot ignore. Naveen Polishetty as Acid, the angry dude always at the brink of burping out slang shines in a role that seems to be tailer-made for him. Saharsh Kumar Shukla as Bevda, and Tushar Pandey as Mummy although did not have much to do yet accomplishes in bringing utmost sincerity in their flawed characters. Special mention to Pratiek Babbar who plays the antagonist with aplomb (how we wish we'd get to see him more often on screen)!   Once again, Nitesh Tiwari deserves applauds for managing to extract such performances from the huge cast and not messing up like took many cooks to a broth!   Shraddha Kapoor like always had little to do apart from being a love interest, an audience and then a supporting wife and an anxious mother. Her appearance is the movie as Sexa puts it is like ‘a Haley's comet’ and so is her romance with Anni. Shraddha as Maya’s character arc is as underdeveloped as her dressing, from midi dresses in 20s to cotton saris, salwars at his 40s, a sloppy work of styling department.   Pritam’s music and background score by Sameer Uddin fails to make a score. There is not a single track that lingers after you come out of the hall. However, introducing a song like Fikar Not in the end credits is a refreshing change from the high-pitched party numbers.   Nitesh Tiwari clearly knows how to set up battles, churn emotions, nail biting moments in the sports field - he proved that in his last film, Dangal, and proves it again here. He embarks on a tried and tested formula but does it with self-assurance so much so that even when at parts the movie gets preachy like when a friend called his kid to advice him not obsess about excelling at term exams for a bike, it doesn't appear over archaic.   The often-heard message of, life is a journey about struggles and not results is not the takeaway of the film. It's about its characters who have their moments of glory and shortcomings. In them, you'll likely find traces and memories of your youth and meet all kinds of friends, the angry one, the horny one, the alcoholic one and the mamma’s boy. Even with its predictable plotline and moralizing tendencies, it managed to keep a broad smile smeared on my face throughout and so it will for you.

‘Chhichhore’ movie review: Furious fun as long as it stays on the college campus

The light touch and the heavy hand are both at play in Nitesh Tiwari’s Chhichhore . The movie begins as a rambunctious college campus comedy, quickly moves into the sentimental family drama zone, returns for the fun and games, shifts back into tear-jerking territory, and finally runs out of breath with only some of its ambitions realised.

The haring around over 146 minutes produces many hilarious and unvarnished views of college life, more humour about underwear than anyone has seen before, some nifty character sketches, and the paradoxical message that it is only human to fail despite trying for many interminable minutes to succeed.

The idea that it is what is on the inside that counts sometimes takes vivid form. The sight of the inmates of a hostel at an engineering college scampering around the grounds and drenching one another in water while clad only in their briefs is likely to linger in memory, and not always in a pleasant way.

In the present, many years after that bawdy night some time in 1992, one of the aforementioned underclad men is grappling with a suicide attempt by his son. Anni (Sushant Singh Rajput) and his wife Maya (Shraddha Kapoor) were both academic achievers, which pushes the underperforming Raghav to the edge. As Raghav hovers between life and death, Anni has a brainwave – why not marshal the healing powers of storytelling and organise a college reunion right there outside the intensive care unit?

Might not Raghav, whose prognosis gets more dire with every passing day, be encouraged by the real story behind why his parents and their friends were known as “losers” in college? Raghav’s blood pressure fluctuates dangerously when Anni begins to spin his yarn, but medical accuracy isn’t on this movie’s list of achievements.

What works best for the nostalgia-flecked Chhichhore is its warm and non-judgemental evocation of the wonder years. The earnest Anni arrives at a college modelled on the Indian Institute of Technology and learns that he has been assigned to Hostel Number 4. This is where the “losers” are dumped. Although Anni initially attempts to move out, he soon succumbs to its charms.

The charms have telling nicknames. They include Playboy magazine’s most ardent reader Sexa (Varun Sharma), the cossetted Mummy (Tushar Pandey), the profanity-spouting Acid (Naveen Polishetty) and the moody Derek (Tahir Raj Bhasin). The gorgeous Maya (Shraddha Kapoor), described as the Halley’s Comet of the campus, is the only female element in the mix.

Anni soon becomes fast friends with this unlikely lot. The camaraderie comes handy when Hostel No 4 decides to shed its sad-sack reputation and defeat a superior team of athletes led by Raggie (Prateik) in a sports competition. Raggie is to this movie what Deepak Tijori was in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar – the arrogant overachiever who treats the games like the Olympics and displays Narcos -level evil in his efforts.

Although the movie peddles the message that students should be liberated from the requirement to excel, Chhicchore becomes as obsessed with the games as Sexa is with his centrefolds. One-third of Chhicchore is dedicated to the contest between unequals, but the best bits have already gone by.

Another student joins the gang almost as an afterthought – the liquor-loving Bevda (Saharsh Shukla). Bevda is introduced after the interval, and since the screenplay by Tiwari, Piyush Gupta and Nikhil Mehrotra is aware of its contrivances, he is accompanied by the observation that he has been written out of the story thus far.

Bevda isn’t the only student who looks as old as one of his teachers. In the interests of assembling a diverse cast, Tiwari has recruited actors across age groups. The same actors play their older selves with the help of prosthetics and make-up, but none of them is convincing. Maya appears to have aged about a week, and Anni’s salt-and-pepper hair and Sexa’s faked baldness are distractions at best.

The actors are most effective in their younger avatars. Varun Sharma is wild and appropriate as Sexa, who has a cute name for his penis. Naveen Polishetty, Tahir Raj Bhasin and Tushar Pandey are also in fine form. Sushant Singh Rajput sheds his swagger and fits snugly into the role of the bumbling Anni. Shraddha Kapoor is a radiant presence, and Prateik sharpens his recently acquired villainous persona as the scheming Raggie.

Chhicchore sets itself up as the obverse of Tiwari’s 2016 blockbuster Dangal , in which a determined father projects his ambition onto his reluctant daughters and pushes them to their limits while training them to be wrestlers. It’s worth the sweat and tears, Dangal suggests: one of the daughters brings India glory, proving that her seemingly monstrous father had been right all along.

Achievement, victory and validation are also on the minds of the characters in Chhichore, with starkly different results. However, since the message that it’s alright to fail is delivered by students of one of the country’s most prestigious institutions, it rings about as true as the concern over Raghav’s precarious condition.

A few years before this movie’s 1992 setting came one of the best take-downs of the preoccupation with empty degrees and nonsensical rankings. Pradeep Krishen’s In Which Annie Gives it Those Ones (1989), written by Arundhati Roy, celebrates the chaos and comedy of campus existence. Set in an architecture college and featuring a superbly observed cross-section of ne’er-do-wells, In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones is as laidback and wise as Chhicchore is hardworking and prosaic .

In the 2019 movie in which Anni tries to give it those ones, the most powerful and memorable moments are all in the past, which is seething with fashion-backward college students, affection-laced jousting, and a love for slapstick and hyperbole. The real Chhicchore should never have left the campus.

Movie Review: Chhichhore

Chhichhore Chhichhore Chhichhore

Chhichhore Devesh Sharma , Sep 5, 2019, 22:20 IST

Annirudh (Sushant Singh Rajput) called Anni by his friends and Maya (Shraddha Kapoor) are a divorced couple. Their lives turn topsy turvy when they learn that their young son Raghav has tried to commit suicide. Annirudh feels that narrating stories from his own college days might help his son recover mentally. It was during college that he fell in love with Maya, and formed life-long friendships with the likes of Sexa (Varun Sharma), Derek (Tahir Raj Bhasin), Acid (Naveen Polishetty), Mummy (Tushar Pandey), Bevda (Saharsh Kumar Shukla), and others. As the friends regroup in order to be with Anni and Maya in their time of need, distance and time fades away to reveal a treasure trove of memories...

It's a campus comedy/ romance at one level but tackles the serious problem of student suicide on the other. Hundreds of students every year put themselves in the way of harm because of pressure brought in by studies. It's a problem that needs redressal. Communication is one of the key factors here. Despite all the latest means of communication, parents have sort of lost touch with their children. Then, while we do motivate our children towards success, we need to tell them that failure is okay as well. That it's not failure but the fear of failure that one should be vary of. That's the message the film tries to impart and that's the message we need to take to our homes and plant in the fertile hearts and minds of our children.

The film is a mixture of Student Of The Year, 3 Idiots and most campus films you've seen in your life. The hostels are pitted off each other in a set of sporting achievements and Sushant Singh Rajput and friends belong to a hostel which has never won the championship ever. They square off against a hostel whose leader is Raggie (Prateik Babbar), and who have always won it. So they use a mixture of cunning and team building to shorten the odds. The various sport activities are written to bring in the laughs and do their job. One can feel the college spirit seeping through. The various antics of the students inside the hostel also bring in the laughs. Our only complaint is that the students in a premier engineering college are shown to do everything except studying. While the nostalgia portions are nice, the parts where Sushant and Shraddha meet the doctor appear repetitive and hence lose their impact after a while. One realises that the director has been using them as fillers to merge the past with the present. Another minor glitch, if it could be called that, is that there is no conversation about what Sushant and Shraddha's friends are doing currently. We don't get to know how they fared in life. Let alone that, one isn't told why the couple, who were college sweethearts, couldn't sustain their marriage. These gaps could easily have been filled and one wonders why it wasn't the case

Sushant Singh Rajput channels his inner Steve Jobs in his senior avatar. He has a way of underplaying his characters and has co-stars like Tahir Raj Bhasin, Varun Sharma and Prateik Babbar feed off him, thereby adding to the film. He's flawless playing the ambitious student and looks convincing as a dad as well.

It was nice to see Prateik playing a cocky house captain with a swagger in his walk. He has added to his repertoire with this film.

In fact, the entire ensemble cast  have batted well for the film and have been true to their characters. They do give off a feeling of being die-hard friends. Shraddha Kapoor and Sushant Singh's romance needed to be explored more. They make for a convincing couple for sure. Shraddha has acted well in both avatars but we wish we saw more of her angst and her anger.

All-in-all, Chhichhore is a well-acted comedy providing plenty of laughs with its one-liners and talks about an important issue as well. What more can one ask for, really?

'Chhichhore' review: An authentic and heartwarming story

Entertainment bollywood.

Every actor is perfectly cast in this film and you find yourself rooting for the underdogs

Chhichhore still

Bollywood films set in college campuses lean towards creating a shined-up and sanitised world populated with insanely rich kids (high-five director Karan Johar, high-priest of fashionable and flashy flicks). But Chhichhore isn’t one of them. The college buddy drama subverts those established tropes and gives us an authentic and heartwarming story.

Director Nitesh Tiwari of Dangal fame goes down and dirty as he brings to life a bunch of goofball engineering students who graduate in life with honours.

The movie oscillates between those bitter-sweet gloriously happy college days and their present day life filled with parenting challenges in their mid forties.

Sushant Singh Rajput, who plays the immensely lovable Anni, shines in his role as the gawky, unsure college student who grows up to be a doting father to a troubled teenage son.

His receding hairline wig — in the grown-up, adulting portions — might jar, but his performance is smooth and stirring. He’s charming as an impish bloke trying to impress that popular girl from college Maya (Shraddha Kapoor) and is equally in command as an overprotective father who is forced to grapple with a personal tragedy.

Varun Sharma, who plays Sexa (a nickname indicating his adoration for adult magazines), is a hoot, while Raj Thahir Bhasin as Derek, the brooding sporting champion, is spot on. The camaraderie between the young men as they discover love, life and all thing in-between is enjoyable. Every actor is perfectly cast in this film and you find yourself rooting for the underdogs by the end of the movie.

Chhichhore is a warts-and-mole approach to filmmaking. Tiwari doesn’t shy away from showing his actors in a less appealing way. The portions where there is a sudden re-union when a family tragedy strikes one of their own, the men aren’t oil paintings. As life takes a toll on them, their hair and their youthful bodies seem to be the biggest casualties. The directors have chosen actors who aren’t vain and their progression feels authentic.

Agreed, there may be times when you are itching to scrub the grimy men’s toilets and throw in some underpants as the boys love to cavort around in knickers and dunk each other in water, but their hearts are in the right places.

However, it’s the bromance among friends from college that shine. The actual romance between Shraddha Kapoor and Sushant Singh Rajput — two college sweethearts — lack steam and sizzle. Their rocky relationship as they reach their forties seem forced.

Chhichhore might remind you of iconic Bollywood blockbusters such as Aamir Khan’s seminal Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander and Three Idiots — two iconic cultural references — but Chhichhore has its own distinct appeal. While the portions featuring the sporting competition feels stretched, it isn’t a deal breaker. Parteik Babbar as the token privileged rich bloke who bully and brandish Anni and gang as losers is serviceable in his part.

While you may question certain twists and the hasty re-union of college friends who had lost touch, the logistics and the lack of logic shouldn’t stop you from enjoying this film. Couched in humour and wit, there are certain life lessons to be learnt in Chhichhore. It isn’t the grade that matters ultimately in life, but your attitude towards living that counts.

Chhichhore graduates with flying colours on that front.

Chhichhore Movie Review - A wondrous, highly enjoyable throwback to our heydays!

Chhichhore Movie Review

Sidharh Srinivas

Nitesh Tiwari became a household name with the arrival of Dangal, a trendsetting film which equally balanced the sports angle and a roller-coaster of emotions. After achieving such a herculean task, it was interesting to see what his next film would talk about. Along came Chhichhore, which at the outset, looked like yet another college comedy. But walk into this film, and you will realize that what Tiwari wishes to preach is a message that is important for the entirety of the country. With superb performances, some chilling moments and a backpack of emotions, Chhichhore stands tall as one of the better offerings of the year, bringing us a highly enjoyable film that has got its heart at the right place.

Chhichhore starts off with us being introduced to Anni and Maya, a divorced pair who are tied together by their only son who is just waiting for his JEE results. Things don’t go as expected, and the kid ends up on the hospital bed with his face disfigured and severe brain injuries thanks to a suicide call. Anni then decides to narrate the story of his college days to his son, and is later joined by his pack of peculiar and frenetic friends, telling us the tale of a bunch of ‘losers’.

On paper, Chhichhore might seem like a film that is too simple and on-the-surface, but boy it does bring you many wondrous moments that either make you laugh, smile or tear up. Unlike the average college film that you come across, Chhichhore puts the focus on the ten hostel blocks of the university, their interactions, relationships and quarrels. There’s a Rajkumar Hirani-like touch in the presentation, and though it reminds us of 3 Idiots, it doesn’t give us time to sit and draw comparisons between the two. The first half is majorly lightweight, keeping the mood alight. But the second means serious business, with the proceedings entering the world of sport. Here, Nitesh takes the bull by the horn and gives us a highly absorbing and engaging set of events that do not drive away our attention. Despite the odd note which goes off guard (created due to the overdose of sports dramas we have seen in the recent past), the film holds its place right up to the the astounding final 40-minute segment which is indeed the best of the lot.

Sushant Singh Rajput isn’t quite the best pick for the role, as he struggles to control his chops in the elderly portions of his role. But in the younger college-day outing, he makes up for the bummer by giving the film what it needs. Shraddha, despite her angelic presence, wavers out in the latter part of the film, giving space to the superb supporting cast led by the absolutely hilarious Varun Sharma, Naveen Polishetty, Tahir Bhasin and Tushar Pandey. Coming to the end of the film, one does realize that it is the supporting cast who add so much value to it, including the little two-scene actors who score with their immense comic timing and dialogues.

Chhichhore could have come with better music as there is not even one song that stands out, but the rest of the technical qualities do help the film garner brownie points. A special mention to cinematographer, who captures the sport sequences with such good tempo and tension.

Looking at it from an aerial view, Chhichhore does have some parts where it could have been a little better, but this is undoubtedly an important and interesting watch on the whole. The feel-good value of the film tops everything else at the closure, and what more do you need when you have already kindled more memories than you can imagine.

Bottomline :  Nitesh Tiwari hits the deck hard with an emotional, engaging and important piece of cinema.

Chhichhore Movie Review: A King-Size Platter Serving Entertainment & Emotions!

With quite a many memorable performances, it's a film that will linger in your mind long enough after you leave the cinema hall..

Chhichhore Movie Review: A King-Size Platter Serving Entertainment & Emotions!

What’s Good: It delivers a very important message which is packed with an appealing story around it!

What’s Bad: It shifts gears way too often than it should.

Loo Break: If dramedy isn’t your genre, just skip the film, forget about taking a break.

Watch or Not?: If you’re one of those kids who, in their childhood, waited to listen to the bedtime stories from your parents – go for this one!

The story, beautifully, is divided into two parts – past and present. Both the sides have a gang proudly calling themselves LOSERS, and the reason behind it is what the entire story is all about. In the present, Anni (Sushant Singh Rajput) is married to Maya (Shraddha Kapoor), and their son Raghav is hospitalized due to a certain accident. Now, Anni decides to call his gang of losers from the past to narrate the story of his life to his semi-conscious son.

Sexa (Varun Sharma) – the hilarious, addicted-to-porn loser, Acid (Navin Polishetty) – who can’t stop abusing, mamma’s boy Mummy (Tushar Pandey), Derek (Tahir Raj Bhasin) – the winning loser and Bevda (Saharsh Kumar Shukla) – the alcoholic chess master reunite after years to fight for Anni’s son’s life this time.

Chhichhore Movie Review: A King-Size Platter Serving Entertainment & Emotions!

Chhichhore Movie Review: Script Analysis

I’m sorry to bring this up, but Nitesh Tiwari has hijacked the airplane ridden by Rajkumar Hirani and added certain elements of his. The template of using humour in between emotional sequences is done before, but Nitesh adds the sparkle of realism above it. The entire film relies on the message of “What if we fail? What do we do then?” This is novel & that’s what is the USP of the film.

Tiwari beautifully uses non-linear storytelling to his use in the film. He bridges the gap between both the story to make it one & that’s what makes the script special. The story is highly predictable at places but it compensates in the second half with certain surprises. It keeps you intrigued until the end; that’s where it wins. This is also possible because of the constant touches of laughter throughout; there’s not a single emotional sequence that pans out for a very long time.

Chhichhore Movie Review: Star Performance

I know Sushant Singh Rajput is good at emotional sequences, but with this one, he has hit the ball out of the park. This man knows how to make someone moist-eyed by shedding some tears. He has delivered a master-of-all-trades performance. He’s as convincing as the friend as much he’s when he becomes the father. Shraddha Kapoor as Maya gets the shades of her character on-point. She looks pretty & acts with equal vibrancy.

Varun Sharma handles the comical portions of the film very well. Probably the best after Choocha for him, but definitely the best when it comes to the character sketch. Naveen Polishetty is the surprise package of the film. We recently saw him in the ‘half-day’, a viral sketch video, and it’s high time he got the chance to be in Bollywood. He’s here & he lives up to the high expectations.

Tushar Pandey and Saharsh Kumar Shukla prove to be an exceptional aid to Nitesh Tiwari’s narrative. Tahir Raj Bhasin leaves a mark as well. The highly underrated Prateik Babbar is a charming addition to the gray shades of the film. Special mention for Sanjay Goradia (Mummy’s father), he steals the show with just a couple of his scenes.

Chhichhore Movie Review: Direction, Music

When Nitesh Tiwari helmed Aamir Khan’s Dangal, there were people who didn’t credit him as much as he should’ve been. But with Chhichhore, all the doubts of him going a long way in Bollywood should fade. Barring a couple of loopholes, above mention, this is a complete package as an entertainer. It could work wonders on satellite because of the repeat value it has.

When I saw Pritam’s name in the credits for the songs, I was sure this is going to be something. Every song is laced with the narrative & nothing’s forced. Woh Din & Control go very well the script. Sameer Uddin’s background score isn’t just a prop, it’s used very smartly to elevate the watching experience in many scenes.

Chhichhore Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, Chhichhore is a whole lot of platter that serves entertainment and emotions. With quite a many memorable performances, it’s a film that will linger in your mind long enough after you leave the cinema hall.

Three and a half stars!

Film review: Chhichhore

Dheeraj kumar

Director: Nitesh Tiwari Cast: Sushant Singh Rajput, Shraddha Kapoor, Varun Sharma, Naveen Polishetty, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Tushar Pandey “Chhichhore” directed by Nitesh Tiwari, starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Shraddha Kapoor in the main lead is surely a youth-oriented movie considering the fact of strong language being used in the film. The film lacks the story but scores point for the hilarious scenes and some extremely hard-hitting social message. Varun Sharma’s brilliant portrayal of the lustful character justifies the name SEXA in the movie, the film might also be in the news for the catchy names of the characters like MUMMY, ACID, BEVDA & DEREK. In the film, Sushant and Shradha play the character of studious students and one can witness their journey of falling in love with each other is explained in a skimmingly, while the majority focus of the movie is concentrated on the “GC” match and their strive towards winning it. Unlike the stereotypic ending, the film ends with HERO’s being on the losing side and educating the audience on the concept of failure and how one must take it positively. Surely the audience is going to have a hilarious and gala time in the theatre but will have to compromise with the logic and story in the film.

Rhea Chakraborty shared on Twitter, "Saw #Chhichhore last night, most honest , relevant and brilliant film I’ve seen in ages! @niteshtiwari22 sir take a bow, @NGEMovies ? Fab performances @ShraddhaKapoor @varunsharma90 @TahirRajBhasin ?, @itsSSR as #Anni is outstanding,a treat to watch ?"

Varun Dhawan posted on Twitter, "Watched #chichore last night. Had a blast @niteshtiwari22 what an amazing film with a beautiful message. U will come home with the whole group. I have 3 people very close to me associated with this film. Go catch it everyone."

In a recent interaction with indianexpress.com , Nitesh Tiwari shared what preparation went into the making of Chhichhore. He said, "It was a very difficult preparation. It was one very challenging film to write and we kept on writing and rewriting drafts because there are so many characters over two different timelines all strung together in plot points that cross each other, something that’s not easy to achieve. So, I am very happy the way it has shaped up."

The director added, "That’s what made it very challenging to shoot also because you are shooting something four months apart but, in the film, they are five seconds apart. How do you shoot that? There has to be seamless transition. That happens throughout the film. That’s what makes it challenging. So, if you are not prepared, you will be in trouble for sure."

‘Slow’ Review: We Don’t Have to Take Our Clothes Off

The second feature by the Lithuanian filmmaker Marija Kavtaradze asks what a relationship looks like when you factor out the sex.

By Beatrice Loayza

“Slow,” a relationship drama from Lithuania with a delicate touch, offers an understanding of intimacy that is rare in romance movies.

Elena (Greta Grineviciute), a contemporary dancer, meets Dovydas (Kestutis Cicenas), a sign language interpreter, at a class for deaf adolescents — she teaches the steps and he translates her instructions for the students. After the first session, the two 30-somethings begin a modest flirtation that inches toward the physical, but Dovydas pulls out a wild card when Elena invites him to her room: He is asexual.

The second feature by Marija Kavtaradze, “Slow” takes this difference as its point of departure. What does a relationship look like when you factor out the sex? It’s clear that Elena has a hard time accepting Dovydas as he is, a frustration that links back to her childhood self-esteem issues.

The couple’s journey is predictably bumpy, in part because the film aligns too consistently with Elena’s normative outlook. Dovydas’s sexuality baffles her, and Kavtaradze struggles to justify why the couple makes sense together despite this friction. Scenes meant to illustrate their special chemistry seem plucked out of a run-of-the-mill indie movie (an awkward-but-cute dance; in another scene, eyes locked from across the bar).

Grineviciute and Cicenas, however, give depth to a story that becomes stuck on the sorrows of the couple’s discrepancies. Dovydas alternates between sheepish and resolute, making his bouts of jealousy feel organic and vulnerable; Elena — we see in fierce, breathy interludes of her dance rehearsals — wields her physicality and thwarted desires as extensions of her personality.

Throughout the film, we see Dovydas enthusiastically performing a kind of sign language karaoke against a vivid blue backdrop; his facial expressions are like a lovesick balladeer. The film makes too little of this intuitive connection between lovers, both adept, in their own ways, at communicating passion by other means.

Slow Not rated. In Lithuanian, with subtitles. Running time: 1 hour 48 minutes. In theaters.

Chhichhore Movie

CHHICHHORE is the story of ‘loser’ friends trying to become winners and learning some important lessons on the way. Annirudh Pathak aka Anni (Sushant Singh Rajput) is a middle-aged man residing in Mumbai with his son Raghav (Mohammad Samad) after divorcing his wife Maya (Shraddha Kapoor). Raghav is under immense ...  pressure as he has just given the entrance exams for engineering. Both his parents were rankers when they gave the entrance examination. As a result, Raghav is feeling the pressure tremendously. Anni however is confident that he’ll make it. Finally, the result is out and sadly, Raghav fails to make the cut. Scared that he’ll be labelled a loser all his life, he attempts to commit suicide by jumping from a high rise. He survives but the doctor treating him, Dr Kasbekar (Shishir Sharma) makes it clear that the chances of him recovering are slim. Anni is obviously heartbroken and with no option in hand, he decides to adopt a novel method to ensure that Raghav gets the will to live. He starts narrating him his story as an engineering student in Mumbai’s National College of Technology. He’s allotted a room in Hostel no 4 aka H4, considered to be the residence of the ‘Losers’. At first, Anni is flabbergasted with the kind of characters in H4. But slowly, he becomes good friends with some of them like Gurmeet Singh Dhillon aka Sexa (Varun Sharma), Acid (Navin Polishetty), Sundar aka Mummy (Tushar Pandey), Bevda (Saharsh Kumar Shukla) and Derek (Tahir Raj Bhasin). The number of girls in engineering is negligible and the most popular among them is Maya (Shraddha Kapoor). Anni manages to woo her and they soon start dating. However, Anni and others are still called ‘Losers’ and there’s a reason for it. The General Championship aka GC is a sports tournament that takes place annually in the college. The students of H4 always lose miserably and are the last among the ten hostels. Hence, the ‘Loser’ tag. Raggie (Prateik Babbar) from H3 is a champion who wants all the winning students from other hostels to be in his hostel so that H3 can win the GC. He invites Anni, since the latter is a basketball champion. But Anni refuses, thereby earning the wrath of Raggie. Anni and others from H4 decide to shed the tag of ‘Loser’ once and for all by winning the H4. However, the road to the trophy is full of hurdles. Cut to present-day. Raghav’s condition stops deteriorating after listening to the story of the ‘Losers’ but there’s no improvement either. What happens next, in the flashback as well as in the present day, forms the rest of the film.

Review: In ‘The Fall Guy’ with Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, what’s a stuntman to do? Shake it off

I must confess that before seeing the crowd-pleasing “The Fall Guy,” I had no idea that the movie takes its title from the niche of stunt performers who specialize in leaping from great heights and was only dimly aware that it was based on an ’80s TV series that I didn’t see because I was in college and spent most of my free time sipping watery beer in the left-field pavilion of Dodger Stadium, wondering why Tommy Lasorda would let Tom Niedenfuer pitch to Jack Clark with an open base.

“The Fall Guy” has a much happier outcome than that 1985 playoff series, but not for the reasons you might imagine. Being that director David Leitch is a former stuntman, doubling for A-listers like Matt Damon and Brad Pitt , you expect that the film will boast exceptional stuntwork — and it does. At its best, though, it’s a romantic comedy that coasts on the charisma of its two appealing leads, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. You may come for the cannon rolls . But afterward, you’ll remember Blunt‘s character calling out Gosling‘s for crying to Taylor Swift .

Why is Gosling sobbing? He’s playing a stuntman. They don’t usually get up in their feelings. But Gosling’s Colt Seavers has good reason for shedding some tears. For years, he worked as a stunt double for prima donna action star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson, offering an amusing amalgam of Tom Cruise and Matthew McConaughey), until a high fall went horribly wrong. Embarrassed, he turns his back on Hollywood and the woman he loves, camera operator Jody Moreno (Blunt).

A man seated on a movie crane speaks to a woman in a car.

Eighteen months later, Colt gets a call from Ryder’s meddling producing partner, Gail (“Ted Lasso’s” Hannah Waddingham), begging him to come to the Sydney set of the star’s latest movie, a silly sci-fi epic called “Metalstorm,” which just happens to be Jody’s directorial debut. Ryder has gone missing. Gail needs Cole’s help to find him and, as long as he’s there, maybe execute a few stunts and, who knows, win back Jody’s love.

The movie’s screenwriter, Drew Pearce, knows a thing or two about action flicks (and, quite likely, action divas and studio interference), with credits that include “Iron Man 3” and Leitch’s “Hobbs & Shaw”). He fills the breezy first hour of “The Fall Guy” with clever, self-referential riffs on big-budget filmmaking, the proper use of split screens and the curious lack of an Oscar category for stuntwork . (If there was one — and there should be — this movie’s stunt designer, Chris O’Hara, would win it in a walk.)

In one of the movie’s most inspired sequences, Jody makes Colt explain why he ghosted her, through the guise of explaining “Metalstorm’s” love story, all while putting him through take after take of a stunt where he’s set afire and slammed against a boulder. Who needs a revenge song when you can just repeatedly call out “Action”?

The stunt crew pulls off an explosive stunt on the set of "The Fall Guy"

It’s time for an Oscar for stunts. ‘The Fall Guy’ is the best argument for it

Director David Leitch tops himself with his new action-comedy starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, but his greatest legacy may be ahead of him — if the motion picture academy takes notice.

April 17, 2024

It’s one of several scenes where the film smartly uses stunts to reveal character, advance the story and make good use of Gosling’s gift for physical comedy. If Colt can’t signal thumbs-up at the end of a stunt, it’s not just a blow to his ego. He’s working his way through a bewildering cloud of confusion — not to mention being a suspect in a murder investigation — that even a pitcher of spicy margaritas (nobody says “spicy margarita” better than Emily Blunt) with his lovely lady won’t be able to solve.

The two leads enjoy such an easygoing groove that you’re soon dreaming about the time when their characters can once again go looking for that lost shaker of salt. But then the movie sidelines Blunt and completely focuses on the action, employing boats, helicopters and trash-bin trucks in an undeniably impressive series of stunts — all to diminishing effect. One of the running jokes in “The Fall Guy” has Jody trying to solve “Metalstorm’s” third-act issues. You sense that Leitch and Pearce ran into the same wall. But unlike Colt and his stunt brethren, they didn’t quite manage to dust themselves off.

Or, more likely, in their minds, they did and made precisely the movie they intended. Given Leitch’s background, it’s not surprising that “The Fall Guy” ends up landing as a big old bear hug to stunt performers, a way to shine a spotlight on a profession that, by definition, requires anonymity. The closing credits feature behind-the-scenes footage of the movie’s stunts being performed, showing that a good (and safe) time was had by all. Its fraternal spirit reminded me of the blooper reels you’d see at the end of the Burt Reynolds movies made by director Hal Needham who, yes, began his career as a stunt double.
