Tuition & Financial Support

Financial support.

Applicants to UBC have access to a variety of funding options, including merit-based (i.e. based on your academic performance) and need-based (i.e. based on your financial situation) opportunities.

Program Funding Packages

We provide a financial package that includes tuition plus $30,000 per year for the first five years of the PhD Program.

Average Funding

  • 3 students received Teaching Assistantships. Average TA funding based on 3 students was $4,011.
  • 3 students received Research Assistantships. Average RA funding based on 3 students was $25,668.
  • 3 students received internal awards. Average internal award funding based on 3 students was $11,847.

Scholarships & awards (merit-based funding)

All applicants are encouraged to review the awards listing to identify potential opportunities to fund their graduate education. The database lists merit-based scholarships and awards and allows for filtering by various criteria, such as domestic vs. international or degree level.

Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA)

Many professors are able to provide Research Assistantships (GRA) from their research grants to support full-time graduate students studying under their supervision. The duties constitute part of the student's graduate degree requirements. A Graduate Research Assistantship is considered a form of fellowship for a period of graduate study and is therefore not covered by a collective agreement. Stipends vary widely, and are dependent on the field of study and the type of research grant from which the assistantship is being funded.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA)

Graduate programs may have Teaching Assistantships available for registered full-time graduate students. Full teaching assistantships involve 12 hours work per week in preparation, lecturing, or laboratory instruction although many graduate programs offer partial TA appointments at less than 12 hours per week. Teaching assistantship rates are set by collective bargaining between the University and the Teaching Assistants' Union .

Graduate Academic Assistantships (GAA)

Academic Assistantships are employment opportunities to perform work that is relevant to the university or to an individual faculty member, but not to support the student’s graduate research and thesis. Wages are considered regular earnings and when paid monthly, include vacation pay.

Financial aid (need-based funding)

Canadian and US applicants may qualify for governmental loans to finance their studies. Please review eligibility and types of loans .

All students may be able to access private sector or bank loans.

Foreign government scholarships

Many foreign governments provide support to their citizens in pursuing education abroad. International applicants should check the various governmental resources in their home country, such as the Department of Education, for available scholarships.

Working while studying

The possibility to pursue work to supplement income may depend on the demands the program has on students. It should be carefully weighed if work leads to prolonged program durations or whether work placements can be meaningfully embedded into a program.

International students enrolled as full-time students with a valid study permit can work on campus for unlimited hours and work off-campus for no more than 20 hours a week.

A good starting point to explore student jobs is the UBC Work Learn program or a Co-Op placement .

Tax credits and RRSP withdrawals

Students with taxable income in Canada may be able to claim federal or provincial tax credits.

Canadian residents with RRSP accounts may be able to use the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) which allows students to withdraw amounts from their registered retirement savings plan (RRSPs) to finance full-time training or education for themselves or their partner.

Please review Filing taxes in Canada on the student services website for more information.

Cost Estimator

Applicants have access to the cost estimator to develop a financial plan that takes into account various income sources and expenses.

Industrial relations and human resources, program overview.

The Master of Industrial Relations and Human Resources (MIRHR) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree programs benefit students who are interested in advanced academic study leading to career opportunities in human resources management; labour management relations; collective bargaining and dispute resolution; organization development and change; and labour market and social policy. The MIRHR degree may be taken on a full-time or part-time basis.

The MIRHR is a professional degree program designed to train students in the latest innovations and best practices within industrial relations and human resources management. The degree provides specialized study of the employment relationship using an interdisciplinary approach.

The PhD program is a research-oriented program of study designed to provide students with a thorough knowledge of the field and strong research skills. Offered only on a full-time basis, students normally fulfil a two-year residency requirement that enables their full participation in the activities associated with the program.

Quick Facts

Master of industrial relations and human resources, program description.

The Master of Industrial Relations and Human Resources (MIRHR) degree program benefits students who are interested in advanced academic study leading to career opportunities in human resources management, labour-management relations, collective bargaining and dispute resolution, organization development and change, and labour market and social policy.

The MIRHR is a professional degree program designed to train students in the latest innovations and best practices within industrial relations and human resources management. The program uses an interdisciplinary approach to provide specialized study of the employment relationship.

The MIRHR offers two program options:

The two-year MIRHR option allows qualified students to complete the degree program in two years (16 non-consecutive months) of full-time study.

The advanced-standing MIRHR option enables qualified students to complete the MIRHR in one year (12 consecutive months) of full-time study.

Both options may be taken on a part-time basis.

MIRHR Program (Two-Year)

Minimum admission requirements.

Applicants are admitted under the General Regulations of the School of Graduate Studies. Applicants must also satisfy the CIRHR additional admission requirements stated below.

Applicants to the two-year MIRHR program require an appropriate bachelor's degree from a recognized university. A minimum grade average of B+ in each of the final two years of the degree is required.

Applicants may submit results from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). Although these tests are not required and there is no minimum score requirement, this information is helpful to the admissions committee. Test results more than five years old are normally not considered.

Applicants whose primary language is not English and who graduated from a university where the language of instruction and examination was not English must write the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The following minimum scores are acceptable:

paper-based TOEFL exam: 600 and 5 on the Test of Written English (TWE)

Internet-based TOEFL exam: 100/120 and 22/30 on the writing and speaking sections

IELTS exam: overall score of 7.0 (Academic), with at least 6.5 for each component.

Since space in the program is limited, all applicants who meet the minimum admission requirements cannot be guaranteed admission. The CIRHR admissions committee reserves the right to select qualified applicants to the program. All admission decisions are final.

2023 - 2024 CIHR Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

Descriptions, opportunity link:, opportunity type:, award amount and duration:, eligibility.

Eligibility to Apply

For an application to be eligible, all the requirements stated below must be met:

  • The Nominated Principal Applicant must be a  trainee  (and maintain such status throughout the award duration) and meet the minimum commitment of 75% of their time in the proposed research training (Research + Course Work) throughout the tenure of their award. Note : For the purpose of this funding opportunity, trainees cannot hold or be on leave from an  independent research  position.
  • A primary  supervisor  must be identified on the application. An additional supervisor may also be identified.
  • As of the application deadline, the Nominated Principal Applicant must hold or be completing a PhD or a regulated health professional degree. The Nominated Principal Applicant must expect to complete all of the requirements of the degree by the latest possible date on which they can take up their award (see  Conditions of Funding ). For examples of health professions, please consult the list  Eligible Health Professions .
  • Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada are eligible to hold a CIHR Fellowship award in Canada or abroad. Nominated Principal Applicants who are neither Canadian citizens nor permanent residents of Canada may only hold a CIHR Fellowship award at a Canadian institution.
  • A recipient of a  CIHR doctoral–level award  with a health professional degree  may apply to the Fellowship funding opportunity no earlier than during the last year of their award. If a recipient of a CIHR doctoral–level award  with a health professional degree  applies to the Fellowship funding opportunity for doctoral support before the last year of the doctoral award, funding for the currently-held doctoral award will be cancelled as of the first potential effective date of the Fellowship award, even if the application is not successful through the Fellowship funding opportunity.
  • The Nominated Principal Applicant may submit  only one (1) application per year  (September 1 to August 31) for funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) or the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). However, individuals eligible to apply to the  Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships program  or the  Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program  may also submit an application to the CIHR Fellowship program (other exceptions may apply depending on the program objectives; these would be indicated in the specific funding opportunities).
  • The Nominated Principal Applicant must complete one of CIHR's three  interactive modules on sex and gender in research  and include the completion certificate with their CIHR Fellowship application (see  How to Apply  section for further details).

CIHR's  Health Research Training Strategy  aims to  equip  research trainees so that they emerge from their training as scientific, professional, or organizational leaders within and beyond the health research enterprise. Generating  Research Leaders of tomorrow  is a key objective for CIHR.

Fellowships provide support for highly qualified applicants  in all areas of health research  at the post-PhD degree or post-health professional degree stages to add to their experience by engaging in health research either in Canada or abroad.

It is expected that applicants integrate sex and gender perspectives into their research to promote rigorous science that has the potential to expand our understanding of health determinants for all people. As such, applicants are required to indicate how they will account for sex (biological factor) and gender (socio-cultural factor) in the research design, methods, analysis and interpretation, and dissemination of findings. For more information and resources, please see the  Sex, Gender and Health Research page  on the CIHR website.
