The department offers both major and minor programs at the undergraduate level, as well as MA and PhD programs for advanced study in history. The department’s course offerings at all levels are chronologically, geographically, and topically broad. With a presence on six of Kent State’s eight campuses, the department’s faculty presently number two dozen and include many award-winning teachers and researchers.

Doctoral Program Information

A. Program Description. Kent State University's doctoral program trains students to be both scholars and teachers. To move students beyond the traditional emphases on US and European history or the modern era exclusively, our program includes a transnational field focused on a particular thematic area and encompassing two distinct time periods or parts of the world.

B. Special Programs. Once they pass their comprehensive exams, all students on appointment are assigned complete responsibility for their own sections of one of our Kent Core courses in US history or the history of civilizations. To develop breadth in their teaching (and to make them more attractive to potential employers), students are encouraged not to concentrate all of their teaching in one course over several semesters and to branch out. The Department also runs a Preparing Future History Faculty program to professionalize our students before they graduate. University Fellowships are generally available on a competitive basis for advanced doctoral students that provide a service-free semester for dissertation work.

C. Financial Aid. The Department awards a limited number of doctoral-level graduate assistantships each year that provide for full tuition remission and a monthly stipend. Students may receive doctoral support for a maximum of four years (pending the availability of funds), provided they demonstrate satisfactory performance in their academic programs and assigned duties. Before comprehensive exams, students assist tenure-track faculty as assistants in one of our Kent Core history courses; once they pass their comprehensives, they are assigned their own section will full instructional responsibilities.

D. Degree Requirements. A minimum of 30 hours beyond the MA is required for the PhD. Students take both written and oral comprehensive exams in their three chosen fields of history. We encourage all students, but especially those attending full time, to complete their comprehensives as quickly as possible so that they can move on to the dissertation.

Lessons from Kent State: Is history repeating itself at colleges nationwide?

As Kent State University prepares to commemorate the 54th anniversary of the May 4 shootings , some people can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu.

Roseann "Chic" Canfora, who was an eyewitness to the events of May 4, said she sees many parallels between what happened in 1970 and what is happening today at Columbia University and other college campuses.

"I am sure other survivors were watching and holding their breath as they are watching things unfold on campuses now, especially in Columbia," said Canfora, whose brother Alan was one of the students wounded on May 4. "I see the dedication on standing up for the injustices they see.”

Protests across college campuses broke out starting May 1, 1970, after the United States invaded Cambodia. In the days that followed, the Kent State ROTC building near the Commons was burned to the ground and windows were broken at several downtown Kent businesses.

On May 4, 1970, the tensions tragically culminated with members of the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd of demonstrators on the Kent State campus, killing four and wounding nine.

Today, students nationwide have been demonstrating against the Israel-Hamas war and demanding universities end their investments in Israel. Protesters and police have clashed at pro-Palestinian encampments at Columbia University and UCLA, drawing national attention. Pro-Israel demonstrations also have occurred.

The causes prompting the demonstrations more than five decades apart are different, but the student passion is familiar to Canfora.

“I find it heartwarming to see them taking a stand on these issues,” she said. “College students have served as the conscience for the nation.”

Kent State President Todd Diacon noted that similar protests over the Vietnam War also erupted at Columbia University in 1968.

"They even occupied the same building they are occupying now," Diacon said.

Kent State’s Students for Justice in Palestine is encouraging its supporters to participate in Saturday’s May 4 commemoration to “recognize the connection between May 4, 1970, and Palestine today.”

“Show solidarity with Palestine by displaying signs and symbols,” the group posted on its Instagram account. “Let’s pay respect to the May 4th victims and their families while continuing the movement against US militarism and imperialism.”

'The same rhetoric'

Ann Winter of the Kent State University Graduate Student Senate said she fears history may be repeating itself.

"We have seen before the aftermath and consequences of calling for law enforcement to act against peaceful protesters on college campuses," Winter said in a media release this week. "As the anniversary of the Kent State shootings draws near, we wish to bring the horrors of May 4th, 1970, to the forefront of the conversation.

“We, the Kent State University Graduate Student Senate, urge all college and university administrations across the United States to remember Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer, and William Schroeder. These are the names of the young lives lost on May 4th, 1970. These young lives, these students, are like yours."

Winter said the Graduate Student Senate condemns the way that several leaders at colleges and universities in the nation are calling for militarized police to their campuses.

"We are deeply concerned by the images and videos circulating of police brandishing firearms against students, faculty, and staff," Winter said.. "It’s troubling to witness police using stun guns and batons on students pinned to the ground and faculty thrown onto cement sidewalks as they advocate for and protect students against police brutality."

Canfora said she felt the calls for the National Guard to come to college campuses had sinister echoes of what happened 54 years ago.

"When I heard Speaker Mike Johnson's rhetoric calling for the national guard to intervene, it was a chilling callback to the rhetoric to President Nixon, Agnew and Gov. Rhodes," Canfora said. "It's irresponsible to call for this against righteous dissent and peaceful protest. These means are not to attack peaceful demonstrations. We are so close to seeing the same rhetoric, the same results, pinning American soldiers with students."

Including peace studies in the college curriculum

Diacon stressed the importance of talking civilly, even if people disagree with each other.

One of the first things that Kent State University officially did after the May 4 tragedy was to create what is now known as the School for Peace & Conflict Studies. It was originally named the Center for Peaceful Change when it was established in 1971.

"This is an academic unit at Kent State that explores ways for people who are enemies and bring them together in productive dialogue," Diacon said. "It was an important role created for that time and has remained important since then."

It makes sense, Diacon said, that people would turn to Kent State and take lessons from the university's past.

"We remember when conversation breaks down and violence erupts," Diacon said. "I think Kent State is an example of combining freedom of speech with a commitment to enhancing civic dialogue. They don't always go together; these things can be contentious. We know what happens when these passions turn to violence. It's the importance of learning when to agree, when to disagree, and keeping in mind the humanity of one's opponents."

Admission requirements.

The university affirmatively strives to provide educational opportunities and access to students with varied backgrounds, those with special talents and adult students who graduated from high school three or more years ago.

First-Year Students on the Kent Campus: First-year admission policy on the Kent Campus is selective. Admission decisions are based upon cumulative grade point average, strength of high school college preparatory curriculum and grade trends. Students not admissible to the Kent Campus may be administratively referred to one of the seven regional campuses to begin their college coursework. First-Year Students on the Regional Campuses: First-year admission to Kent State’s campuses at Ashtabula, East Liverpool, Geauga, Salem, Stark, Trumbull and Tuscarawas, as well as the Twinsburg Academic Center, is open to anyone with a high school diploma or its equivalent. For more information on admissions, contact the Regional Campuses admissions offices .

International Students: All international students must provide proof of English language proficiency (unless they meet specific exceptions) by earning a minimum 525 TOEFL score (71 on the Internet-based version), minimum 75 MELAB score, minimum 6.0 IELTS score or minimum 48 PTE Academic score, or by completing the ELS level 112 Intensive Program. Transfer Students: Students who have attended any other educational institution after graduating from high school must apply as undergraduate transfer students. For more information, visit the admissions website for transfer students .

Former Students: Former Kent State students or graduates who have not attended another college or university since Kent State may complete the reenrollment or reinstatement form on the University Registrar’s website .

Program Requirements

A minimum C grade must be earned to fulfill the writing-intensive requirement.

Maximum 3 credit hours of HIST 40092 may be applied toward the degree.

Foreign Language College Requirement, B.A.

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts degree in the College of Arts and Sciences must complete 14-16 credit hours of foreign language. 1 To complete the requirement, students need the equivalent of Elementary I and II in any language, plus one of the following options 2 :

  • Intermediate I and II of the same language
  • Elementary I and II of a second language
  • Any combination of two courses from the following list:
  • Intermediate I of the same language

All students with prior foreign language experience should take the foreign language placement test to determine the appropriate level at which to start. Some students may start beyond the Elementary I level and will complete the requirement with fewer credit hours and fewer courses. This may be accomplished by (1) passing a course beyond Elementary I through Intermediate II level; (2) receiving credit through one of the alternative credit programs offered by Kent State University; or (3) demonstrating language proficiency comparable to Elementary II of a foreign language. When students complete the requirement with fewer than 14 credit hours and four courses, they will complete remaining credit hours with general electives.

Certain majors, concentrations and minors may require specific languages, limit the languages from which a student may choose or require coursework through Intermediate II. Students who plan to pursue graduate study may need particular language coursework.

This roadmap is a recommended semester-by-semester plan of study for this major. However, courses designated as critical (!) must be completed in the semester listed to ensure a timely graduation.

  • Obtain historical content knowledge and understand the connectedness of historical events and the wide varieties of human experiences.
  • Understand history as a discipline based on interpretation with historical questions constantly being reframed and investigated.

Full Description

The Bachelor of Arts degree in History provides a well-rounded educational experience in which students have the independence and flexibility to explore and develop their individual interests while getting a solid grounding in different approaches to historical research, writing and analysis.

The study of history offers insight into the complexity of the human experience by exploring the political, cultural, social, economic and environmental factors that have shaped the past and the present. The study of history also offers training in a range of skills, including how to find, evaluate, manage and synthesize multiple sources of information; how to think critically and analyze complex evidence; how to undertake independent research and manage time effectively; how to develop and present reasoned arguments supported by evidence; how to present information and arguments effectively in writing; and how to develop and deliver effective oral presentations. The skills and experiences gained through the study of history provide preparation for a variety of career tracks.

The History major is comprised of several elements. Lower-Division History Electives provide history majors with an overview of the major themes and developments in world history from human origins to the present and in the history of the United States from pre-colonization to the present. The required Historical Research Methods course introduces students to the main tools and techniques of doing history, while providing them with the opportunity to develop and refine the skills of historical research, writing and analysis to do well in their upper-division coursework. The History major also includes distribution requirements in two categories of upper-division courses. Area Studies Electives are a group of upper­-division history courses in which the history of a place (state, nation or region) is the primary focus of the courses. Thematic Studies Electives are a group of upper-division history courses in which a specific topic or theme is the primary focus of the courses while the place and time period are secondary. The required Senior Seminar in History course is a capstone experience in which students develop, design and execute their own original historical research project that utilizes primary sources and engages with current historical scholarship.

Students in the History major are encouraged to undertake an internship for course credit to gain job experience and further strengthen their profile for their career after graduation.

Luce played at Purdue from 2016-20 as a walk-on. He appeared in 46 career games and was a member of two teams that won Big Ten regular season championships. Luce has spent the last three seasons working as a graduate assistant on Matt Painter's staff.

"Tommy came to Kent highly recommended," Senderoff said, per Kent State's website. "Tommy spent seven years at Purdue as a player and graduate assistant. Purdue had one of the best men's basketball programs during that time. Tommy has worked closely with their post players and all facets of their program. I am excited to bring him along."

Luce was a staffer for a Purdue team that won back-to-back regular season titles (2023, 2024), a Big Ten Tournament championship (2023) and reached the National Championship Game (2024) for the first time since 1969.

"I am excited for Tommy to be named the Assistant Coach/Player Development Coach at Kent State University," Painter said in a statement. "Tommy is very detail-oriented and goal-driven and has been a big part of our program for the last three years. All of our players and staff enjoyed working with him and he was very well-respected among the Purdue community. We are happy for him to continue his coaching career at an outstanding program like Kent State."

Senderoff has been the coach at Kent State since 2011. He's compiled a 264-164 record, winning one MAC regular season title (2015) and two conference tournament championships (2017, 2023).

The Golden Flashes concluded last season with a 28-7 record and a 15-3 mark in MAC play.

Pairing Design and Data for Better Healthcare Systems

“We call him the synthesizer,” said Jill Woods, managing principle and designer at NAC Architecture in Columbus, Ohio.

Woods was speaking about Hamid Estejab, M.S. ’23, M.H.D. ’23, who is rounding out his first year as data and analytics synthesizer for NAC, after graduating from Kent State University in 2023 with dual master’s degrees in healthcare design and emerging media and technology.

It was Estejab’s unique set of skills and the hands-on experiences he gained during his time at Kent State that captured NAC’s attention. 

“When we met with him, just in interviewing [him] he talked about his projects that he had done at school, we could see it and it was like instantaneous,” Woods said. “We just said, that's exactly what we need. We need someone who can pull those two things together. And he's so passionate about it, so, it's been great.”

Estejab’s ability to take complex data – which to most would look like simply numbers on a spreadsheet – and transform it into a sound and well-thought-out design has made him a sought-after team member at NAC, Woods said.

“We have worked with a number of people who were all about the spreadsheet and it's great information but getting it from the spreadsheet into a meaningful architectural project is a challenge,” Woods said. “So, having someone who can see it from that beginning point, see it as numbers in a spreadsheet, but understand immediately the implications in a built environment, I think [is] something very special.”

From Iran to Ohio

Hamid Estejab’s path to Kent State University began far, far away. Nearly 10,000 miles away, in fact.

Estejab earned a bachelor of architecture degree from Shiraz University in his native Iran. When he decided to continue his education and wanted to pursue a specialization in healthcare design, options weren’t available in his home country.

The Elliot Master of Healthcare Design Program at Kent State University is a post-professional degree and one of the very few in the U.S. focusing on the design of healthcare facilities. The program equips students with the knowledge and skills required to design spaces that are conducive to safety, satisfaction and efficiency for all end-users, including patients, staff and caregivers. Students in the program are required to take elective courses from the College of Public Health, the College of Nursing and others, to create a diverse and well-rounded understanding of the field. 

The field of Healthcare Design is expected to grow over the next few decades as population demographics shift dramatically. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's National Population Projections, in less than two decades older adults are projected to outnumber kids in the U.S. for the first time in history. By 2060, roughly one in four Americans will be 65 years or older. This in turn will create greater demands for healthcare and assisted living facilities. Ohio is a pivotal state in this national population transition. It is one of only a handful of states already seeing more than 18% of the population at age 65 or older as of 2020.

Connecting the Dots

Being able to help support people working in and using healthcare facilities appealed to Estejab as a vocation that would feel gratifying.

“It’s rewarding because you're not only helping the users of the healthcare, but you're also helping the patients and improving their experience,” he said.

Estejab started to see a correlation between his interest in healthcare architecture and technology, which led him to pursuing a master’s degree in emerging media and technology, in addition to his master’s in healthcare design. This is where everything began to click.

The Master of Science degree in Emerging Media and Technology enables students from diverse undergraduate and professional backgrounds to tap into new career opportunities. Students learn quantitative and coding skills for emerging media platforms, including interactive websites and apps; data-based analysis, communication and visualization; theoretical understanding of the relationship between the technology industry and society; and the tools for working in and managing interdisciplinary teams on interactive technology projects.

Award-Winning Ideas

Estejab was able to see his vision for integrating technology and healthcare design come to life as part of a $2.47 million grant project at Kent State, titled "Toward a Model of Safety and Care for Trauma Room Design." The project, led by Sara Bayramzadeh, Ph.D.,  assistant professor and Elliot Professor in Health Care Design, was awarded the Touchstone Award – Gold Category for conceptual design by the Center for Health and Design. It features an evidence-based design for a Level 1 trauma room. Bayramzadeh worked with an interdisciplinary team, including healthcare professionals from Cleveland Clinic, as well as Kent State faculty and Master of Healthcare Design students, like Estejab.

In 2022, Estejab also participated in the Three Minute Thesis competition, taking home second place for his presentation "Enhancing Wayfinding in Healthcare Environments." In the presentation, he spoke about using data analysis, VR and biofeedback and overall design to enhance wayfinding in hospitals for medical staff and employees as well as patients and visitors, and why it’s important.

  Words of Wisdom

When reflecting on everything that he learned at Kent State and all that he was able to do, Estejab encourages others pursuing a similar path to get out and network and ask questions.

“I think one thing that was really interesting for me and was really helpful and practical was having an opportunity to go to different conferences, make connections and be sure that what you're studying is actually how they're going to implement it in the next phase of your career,” he said. “I think my program, both healthcare design and emerging media and technology helps us to be sure that we have different connections in different firms in different industries. So, if you have any questions, you can just go ahead and ask them. Be sure that what you're designing is actually applicable in the real world as well, because in the next phase you have different challenges, so you have to be prepared.”
