5 Halloween Music Activities

Are you looking for engaging Halloween music activities to spice up your lessons this year?

Keep reading for 5 of my favorite engaging activities to add to your music lessons this October.

Music Symbol Jack-o’-lanterns

I did this activity with a group of my teenage students one year using real mini-pumpkins, and they were so creative! I keep kicking myself for not taking photos of their pumpkins. I’ve also done this activity with elementary ages, and with paper pumpkins instead of the real thing.

To make these cute pumpkins, you need either real mini-pumpkins (you will need to use permanent markers on them, so this option is really only for teenagers), or papers with the outline of a pumpkin. If you’re doing this with elementary I’d definitely opt for the paper version (cheaper, plus much easier!)

Give students options of various musical symbols they know (great review of everything they’ve learned so far). For example, quarter notes, whole notes, sharps, flats, crescendo, fermata, etc. You can draw options on the board, or give them a print-out of various musical symbols (this is what I did).

Ask them to use only the musical symbols to give their jack-o’-lantern a face.

This activity is lots of fun, and you’ll be amazed at the creativity of some of your students! Can they add ears, hair, etc. to their jack-o’-lantern just using music symbols?

These make a lovely display of your students’ work.

Music Escape Room

Nothing will get your students attention back faster than introducing an escape room for your Halloween-week music lessons!

This activity is best for upper elementary through junior high, depending on where your particular group of students is at. It also works with a mixed-age group quite well.

Students work in small groups (or individually if you are using in homeschool) to escape a haunted house. They have been locked in by a (friendly) ghost, and cannot leave until they help the ghost remember his missing music! (Hint: it’s a famous classical piece we often hear around Halloween).

Students will work together and race against the clock to complete 4 music puzzles and 2 musical decoders to escape!

Everything is included in 2 different mix-and-match levels, so you can tailor it to what your group of students have learned.

If you have a hard to engage group, or a special Halloween class coming up, definitely check out my printable Halloween escape room .

Halloween music activities - music escape room game

Poison Rhythm

The poison rhythm game Is a go-to rhythm review activity any time of year, but  is also a great spooky-season activity without being outright Halloween-themed.

If you’d like the full instructions on playing ‘poison rhythm’ you can find them here.

Halloween Listening Glyphs

Listening glyphs are just the ticket when you need a calm, quiet activity that reviews music concepts, while still engaging your students and being spooky. These can be a good choice for the day after Halloween when your students are bouncing off the walls on a sugar high, and you need to introduce some calm into your class.

Plus, listening to new music is a great chance to broaden your students’ musical horizons and to expose them to some ‘spooky’ classical music.

Listening glyphs are coloring activities that ask your students to show their understanding of the music through their coloring.

For example, they could color the witch’s hat black if the music is forte, but purple if the music is piano. This type of activity can be used with any piece of music, but a few Halloween favorites are In the Hall of the Mountain King, Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, and Danse Macabre.

Check out my print-and-go Halloween listening glyph collection here (in multiple levels) .

Halloween music activities - listening glyph worksheets

Halloween Music Bingo

Bingo is a go-to game for any time of year. But, you can make it extra spooky by playing Halloween music bingo . Call from a collection of ‘spooky’ songs, and play a bit of each as your students complete their bingo cards.

You students will hear some familiar Halloween music, and be introduced to a variety of new spooky music from different genres!

Well, those are a few of my favorite Halloween music activities – I hope you have the chance to try one of them this year!

Halloween Music Lessons, Activities & Games

halloween music lessons PIN1

Looking for Halloween music lessons and activities? The month of October is an excellent time to include some Halloween fun into your music lesson plans. Here are some music suggestions and activity ideas to help with your lesson planning.

Halloween Music Listening

There are lots of Halloween themed pop hits (I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you about Thriller), but if you want to include some more classical pieces into your halloween music activities, there are some great ones! Click here for a Youtube playlist of these pieces and more .

  • Toccata & Fugue in D Minor (widely attributed to JS Bach)
  • The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (Paul Dukas)
  • Night on Bald Mountain (Modest Mussorgsky)
  • Hall of the Mountain King (from Peer Gynt, by Edvard Grieg)
  • O Fortuna (Carl Orff)
  • Hansel ud Gretel: Prelude “The Witch’s Ride” (John Pritchard)
  • Danse Macabre (Saint-Saens)
  • The Water Goblin (Dvorak)
  • Dream of the Night of the Sabbath (from Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz)
  • The Night Creeps Slowly (Ryan Smith)
  • Funeral March (from Piano Sonata No 2 by Chopin)
  • Totentanz by Liszt
  • Isle of the Dead (Rachmaninoff)
  • Funeral March of a Marionette (Gounod) – best known as the theme music for the television program Alfred Hitchcock Presents

Halloween Music Lessons – Listening Response Ideas

  • Free draw – provide paper and art materials and invite students to create a visual response to the music they hear (this works well for one of the longer pieces such as Night on Bald Mountain or The Water Goblin)
  • Complete a listening response organizer

Halloween Instrumentals from Movies & TV

When I taught intermediate grades my older students really enjoyed playing “which movie is this” with soundtrack pieces. Split students into two teams, play the audio without sharing your screen and see who can guess the correct movie first. Obviously, with younger students it would be better to stick with lighter themed selections – such as Ghostbusters. Click here for a Youtube playlist of Halloween Film & TV themes .

  • Jaws Title Theme (John Williams)
  • Suite from Psycho: Prelude (Bernard Herrmann)
  • Nightmare on Elm Street (Charles Bernstein)
  • Ghostbusters Theme
  • The Nightmare Before Christmas – This is Halloween
  • Beetlejuice

Halloween Music Lesson Plans – Activity Ideas

Halloween music mystery.

halloween music activity

I just completed this Halloween Mystery Activity and I am so excited about it! It’s very similar to an escape room style activity but arranged as a booklet. Super easy to use – just copy for students and go!

It starts with an engaging two-page story that sets up the mystery. Then, students review their knowledge of music theory to reveal the clues. Once they have revealed all the clues, then they can solve the mystery. This activity is best for grades 4, 5, & 6.

I can’t wait for your class to be one of the first to try it out!

Halloween Music Rhythm Center & Composition Activity

Halloween Rhythm Composition Cube2

I love this Halloween rhythm activity pack because it is just so versatile! Students create their own rhythm composition using the Halloween words, but you can use it in several ways:

  • You can set up the colored mats and rhythm dice cube as a center, with students using either laminated cards or their own black and white copy of the mats to record their composition;

You can make copies of the black and white version of both dice and mats for students to make their own dice and then roll/write their rhythms;

You can even use this as an online activity or virtual center with the included google slides version.

Truth or Dare Halloween Music Lesson Plan

Halloween Truth or Dare2

Halloween Truth or Dare is a fun little activity that is great for the last class before Halloween when the kiddos are a bit squirrelly.

The TRUTH cards ask students to answer trivia questions relating to both music and Halloween (song lyrics, name-the-song, etc). The questions included are all related to Halloween music, but you can also use the blank cards to add review questions for whatever material you are currently studying.

The DARE cards challenge students to complete tasks that stretch their creative thinking, including improvisation, found-item sound exploration, etc.

Music Truth or Dare will get your whole class singing, creating, & giggling!

5 Fun Ways to Use Halloween Songs in Music Class

blog-post-header-fun-ways-to-use-halloween-songs-2022

Using Halloween songs with your music classes is fun for both you and your students. This year celebrate the spooky season in music class with these five fun ways to use Halloween songs! Here are five fun music lesson ideas to get you started.

Halloween Songs Lesson Ideas

Halloween songs – spooky solfege scales.

Have students sing traditional major and minor scales, but with a twist! For each scale degree, assign a different spooky sound effect (hissing for the tonic, creaking for the submediant, etc.). Students can solfege their way up and down the scales while making spooky noises.

The first time you try this lesson idea with your students, as a class decide on what sound you will use for each note of the scale. Practice them using a variety of melodic patterns. Then, once your students are confident. Have them break into small groups and create their own set of spooky sounds for the scale. They could even try singing their favorite Halloween song using the spooky sounds instead of the lyrics!

Danse Macabre

Try using the famous Halloween song composed by Camille Saint-Saens’ “Danse Macabre” as the basis for a dance routine. For this music lesson idea encourage your students to try using haunting moves and gestures. Students could work in groups and then perform the routine for the class or film it and share it online.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Another great way to use a variety of Halloween songs is to have students adapt Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” into a short play or skit. For this Halloween lesson activity, have students research and incorporate Halloween songs into the performance as background music or have students create their own compositions to go along with the action.

A Haunting Canvas with Halloween Songs

Create a spooky masterpiece. Using black construction paper and white paint, have students paint ghostly images. While your students are being creative, have some Halloween songs playing in the background as they work. When they’re finished, hang all the paintings up around the classroom or school for everyone to enjoy.

Halloween Song Analysis

For your older music students, try using a Halloween song to listen to and analyze using the Elements of Music. One way to do this would be to have students work in small groups, and each group works on a different Element of Music.

To complete the analysis, try using the Elements of Music Mind Maps, and get students to write information on the mind maps as they listen to the music. Make sure to play the Halloween song a few times to help students really focus and listen to the music.

Once they have completed their analysis, you could ask students to discuss their analysis with the class OR have each group rotate and read each of the completed Mind Maps while you play the song again.

As an extension of this Halloween music lesson activity, ask your students to choose one of the Elements of Music and write a paragraph.

To get your FREE copy of the Elements of Music Mind Maps that you can use with this activity, click here.

Halloween Songs to Use in Class

Some Halloween songs to use with your classes with these lesson ideas are listed below.

Or you could try some of the songs listed and linked in the blog post, click here to read more.

  •  “I’m a Little Pumpkin” – This adorable song is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. It’s super easy to learn and sing, and it’s just the right amount of silly. Plus, who doesn’t love puppets?
  • “The Skeleton Dance” – This classic Halloween song is a great way to get your students up and moving. The simple lyrics and catchy tune make it easy to learn, and the creepy skeletal illustrations are sure to get your students in the Halloween spirit!
  • “Five Little Pumpkins” – This cumulative tale is a great way to introduce or review numbers with your students. The trick-or-treat theme makes it perfect for October, and the repetitive nature of the song makes it easy to learn and sing along to.
  • “Mr. Bones” – This song is perfect for older elementary students who are looking for something a little more challenging. With multiple parts to sing and a variety of instruments to play, this song will keep your students engaged and entertained. Plus, they’ll love showing off their spooky dance moves!
  • “Halloween Is Coming” – This original Halloweentown anthem is sure to get stuck in your students’ heads! The simple melody and repetitive lyrics make it easy to learn, and the kids will love belting out the catchy chorus.
  • “This Is Halloween” – What would a Halloween music playlist be without this classic? This haunting tune from Danny Elfman’s Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack is perfect for setting the mood in your classroom (just be careful not to scare your youngest students!).
  • “Ghost Busters Theme Song” – Who ya gonna call? Ghost Busters! This timeless tune is perfect for getting your students’ toes tapping (and maybe even inspiring a few costume ideas!).
  • “Monster Mash” – No Halloween playlist would be complete without this iconic party song! The vintage feel is perfect for setting the mood, and the kids will love singing along (and doing the Monster Mash!)
  • “Werewolves of London” – This quirky tune is perfect for older elementary students who are looking for something a little different. With its fast tempo and tongue-twister lyrics, this song will keep your students challenged and engaged throughout the whole lesson.
  • “A witch went riding on her broomstick one day…” – You can’t have a Halloween music playlist without at least one witchy tune! This fun (and slightly silly) song is perfect for helping young children practice following directions, as they clap along, stomp their feet, and wave their arms about!

Halloween is such a fun time of year, and there are so many great ways to incorporate Halloween songs into music classes! These are just a few ideas to get you started. How do you use Halloween songs in your music classes? Share your ideas with us in the comments below!

Until next time

Happy Teaching

Four Halloween Music Activities for Elementary Kids

Musical Bumps in the Night

Ghosts and goblins, witches too. I’m not scared, how about YOU?

Activities incorporating rhymes like these are what get the adrenaline pumping for your Music students around Halloween time. Here are a few that I have used that I found to be both instructionally effective and of course, fun!

Halloween Rhythm Worksheet

This is a fun worksheet that contains various Halloween phrases and a rhythm box. Students have to match the correct rhythm to each phrase. You can make this worksheet as long or short as you want. I give prizes to those who have the most answers correct. By doing this activity, students must be able to identify various rhythm combinations and use their listening skills to match them to the phrases. For example, quarter notes will be used for one syllable words and eighth notes will be used for two syllable words. See below for an example of a Halloween rhythm worksheet.

<strong>Download the Sheet</strong>

It’s All Right…In The Dark!

It&rsquo;s All Right in the Dark

This is a Halloween poem written by Sharon Falk, that incorporates various dynamic changes. It starts off very soft and each line gets louder as your students read. They also have to pat a steady beat on their laps as they recite the poem aloud as a class. (A drum may also be used for this) The dynamic markings are indicated on the handouts. Please see below for an example.

Sammy, the Snickers Snake

This is a longer Halloween poem written by Bob Tucker (click the link for the poem), that I first read to my students (appropriate for my 3rd-5th graders). It is quite comical in nature and they get a laugh out of it. I have used it as a mini-play that the students actually act out that allows us to focus on the drama aspect that Halloween often brings. The poem is about a snake that dresses up as a barber pole for Halloween but gets himself in trouble with the vampires that come out that night. It is suspenseful but funny all at the same time. I do a lot in my class with poetry, rhyming and it’s connections with song and rhythm and this activity can be used for this as well.

Halloween Hot Potato

This is a spin-off of the classic Music game, Hot Potato, but instead of using a potato we use a witch or a ghost beanie baby. I found these at a craft fair and they make really great Halloween game props! Sometimes I will have the students use one or both and they listen to Halloween music and pass the beanies in a circle. When the music stops, whom ever gets stuck with one in their hands is out.

I also put another spin on this game as I pick one student to sit in the middle of the circle with their eyes closed. (I always check for peeking too!) The kids in the circle have to pass the ghost or witch beanie behind their backs and when the music stops, the person in the middle has to guess who has it. If they guess right, then that person with the beanie has to go in the middle, if they guess wrong, that same person stays until they get it correct.

For younger students (in Pre-K and Kindergarten) we use Jack, my Halloween tiger who is big, soft and easy to handle. All of my students beg to play a version of this game all year. This game enhances listening skills as well as keeping a steady beat.

These Halloween activities will give your elementary kids a treat, while you “trick” them into learning several musical concepts. Halloween is one of the best holidays to celebrate the joy of music!

The Importance of Halloween Printables

Halloween printables are more than just fun and games. They serve several educational purposes and can be a valuable addition to any teaching environment.

Many Halloween printables encourage artistic expression and creativity. Coloring pages, crafts, and design activities provide students with an opportunity to explore their imagination while developing fine motor skills and artistic abilities.

Halloween printables can also help students learn about the history and cultural significance of the holiday. They can explore the origins of Halloween, its traditions, and how it is celebrated in different parts of the world.

In the classroom, Halloween printables can be used as a supplement to your curriculum or as a fun break from regular coursework. You can include them as part of your lesson plans, offer them as an optional activity for early finishers, or use them as a basis for group projects and collaborative work.

  • Homeschooling and Remote Learning

For homeschooling or remote learning, Halloween printables can add a festive touch to your daily lessons. They can be used to reinforce concepts, practice skills, or provide an opportunity for creative expression. • Designing your own haunted house

Provide them with halloween printable templates that feature different rooms, furniture, and spooky decorations. I’ve finally completed some of my older pre-reading Halloween pieces in portrait format. You can now find them in bundles in my store. When I did this last year with the on-the-staff Halloween and Christmas music, I thought it was going to be so easy to rotate them from landscape to portrait. Well, it was not as easy as I thought. I had to start all over from the beginning. The only things I didn’t have to re-do was my drawings. However, the benefit is that we can put the pages in a binder without having to take it out to play or awkwardly turning their binder sideways.  My parents and students really appreciate the portrait orientation, and I hope you do too!

Editor’s note: Updated for accuracy.

I’ve used your materials for quite a while now. They are wonderful! My son teaches guitar and finds the materials for beginning guitar so dull and dry. Do you know if there are similar materials as yours for beginning guitar? Barbara

Barbara, I’m glad you can use my material. I don’t know any website that has fun resources for guitar teachers, but I would tell him to try to make some himself! They don’t have to be fancy, just use colorful markers!

Wow! Thanks these pieces are great!

Thank you so much for all the great work you do to make us better teachers!

Thanks for taking the time to do that. These pieces are so fun for early beginners! 🙂

This is amazing, especially for all the new starts in September! 🙂

Wonderful resources!!
