So, you are looking for interesting and creative English project ideas to spice up your lessons?

Here are 18 practical projects that will help your students get creative while enhancing their written and communicative English skills. These are applicable to your middle school and high school students .

Creative English Project Ideas

Test your students’ creativity by asking the them to make an advertisement for inventions of their own. Or they can stick to readily available products within the market.

Ask them to start with the connection: how their product will solve the issue of their ideal customers. Tell them that the best advertisements trigger consumers’ emotions. Let them use powerful adjectives to inspire their fictional customers.

Elevator Pitch

Like advertisement activity, this project also focuses on commercial communication. You would like to assign this project only to high school students because of the amount of research that goes into it.

Start by asking students to review successful elevator pitches of successful startups.

Detail the necessary information and persuasive tactics.

Ask them to create their own business model or select one from vast startups present in the business world.

The last step is to present the whole concept in 3 minutes or less.

Abstract Word Art Activity

abstract word art activity

If you’re looking for a fun group project for 4 or more kids, wacky abstract word art activity is just the ticket. Offering  writing practice  and grammar review, this isn’t your average art project.

Kids practice building sentences with different parts of speech, then create paintings of the silly mad-lib sentences they come up with. In an unexpected fun twist, at the end they get to rip up their paintings and arrange them into wild and unique abstract collages.

Autobiographies

In this fun project, you ask the students to detail their life history in an interesting tone. To avoid monotone, ask them to only include those events in life which they consider adventurous or unforgettable.

Ask them to highlight emotions rather than timeline.

You can add a twist to the exercise by asking them to write their ideal future life in an epilogue.

This project will focus on verbal communication skills.

Ask the students to select a book or excerpt from a book to read. You can assign a genre to keep the communication streamlined.

Students can take turns to give a short review of their reading together with their viewpoints about it. They can talk about the moral values of the characters or change endings or events to discuss if the plot becomes more entertaining with these changes.

Class Magazine

classroom newsletter

This is a perfect project for all classes in middle and high school. You can take it to the next level by asking the whole school to start a competition for the best class magazine.

You can ask your class to select a theme of environmental, health, literary, or societal topic.

Then ask them to gather all skills; idea-generation, writing, design, and presentation. You will get the most benefits if you make it mandatory for every student to produce content for one page of the magazine. (You can include the advertisement activity within the activity of class magazine.)

Comic Strip

This is another extensive project that will not only win the hearts of your students but also allow you to assess their creative capabilities.

Ask them to illustrate interesting events from their lives, or imagination, in the form of comic strips.

ALSO READ: SPEAKING ACTIVITIES FOR ANY LANGUAGE CLASS

This activity is similar to the comic activity given above. The only difference is the increased detail that is required in drama writing. An absence of images adds the obligation on the students to describe scenes and expressions.

Again, students can describe any life event from their reality or imagination.

You can later ask the students to act on the best dramas to improve their verbal and non-verbal communication.

Paper Mache Activity

class 10 english project creative writing

In this messy yet super fun project, students make paper mache futuristic Earths or other imaginary planets as described in science fiction.

This was my cross-curricular activity based off of our Literature reading of  Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?  and a unit topic in English about the environment and recycling. Of course, you can do paper mache for any lesson or unit that you have!

This article gives you the step-by-step instruction on how to do paper mache in the classroom!

Editorial/ Fan Letter

Editorial is one of English project ideas most suitable for high-schoolers while fan letters work for learners from all English expertise levels.

Ask your high-schoolers to analyze a societal issue that is close to their heart. Next, they need to define the problem from the viewpoint of aggrieved parties. Ask them to write out the problem and get it published in a local or national newspaper.

(Be ready to proofread and edit the piece before they send it to relevant personnel.)

Younger students can write fan letters to their best actors, authors, and singers.

This is another English project which will combine societal, and practical, understanding with English learning. In this project, the students will learn problem-solving skills.

Ask them to understand a societal or scientific problem. Once they have understood and defined this issue, they have to provide a solution to this problem.

In the end, they have to present their solution together with the need which gave rise to it in front of the class. (You may want them to include a video presentation with visual effects .)

diorama project

This activity is one of my students’ favorite s not only because it’s fun but also because it facilitates their learning. I tried this project on two literature readings I had before (The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain and Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe) and both achieved the same fantastic end.

In this project, students are tasked to illustrate the setting or a specific part of the book in the form of a three-dimensional miniature scene. Students will pick a favorite scene from the story they are reading and decide how they want to represent it using the materials given (above) and a variety of design strategies.

This writing exercise contains the most fun among all the given projects. You will excite their creativity as well as their inner critic.

Start by inquiring about the literary work which fascinates or inspires them most.

Ask them if they can add humor to that piece. Let them edit a single character or scene or if they want they can give a humorous outlook to the whole plot.

Fables

This open-ended English writing project will ask the students to select one event in their life. This event should be intriguing as well as contain a life lesson.

Then, they have to retell this piece in third person pronoun. Ask them to keep the tone conversational as well as engaging.

In the end, ask them to write a conclusive moral of the story.

Self-Portrait Project

self-portrait project ideas

These self-portrait ideas were part of a short project that went really with my middle school ESL class so I thought I’d share them with you.

My students were able to come up with three products in one activity: a mind map, a self-portrait and an essay. The unit topic was about “Identity” or “Personality” but I guess this will work for general descriptive adjectives lesson as well.

Charts

If you want to include futuristic touch to your English lessons, include a thing or two from STEM subjects. One great way is to ask them to explain or detail a mathematical chart. (You can come up with variations in this original plan. For example, you can ask future businessmen to interpret graphics related to market studies.)

See, if they have enough vocabulary and concepts to comprehend and convey the message to their fellows.

Fictional Pen-Pals

Just like fan letters, this activity asks the students to write letters to their favorite characters in fictional and non-fictional worlds.

Ask them to pinpoint the era, region, settings they like most in a given novel or historical account. Next, they would show interest in one of its characters and the reason for this interest.

In the end, they need to write a letter to this character praising or advising him/her regarding his/her role in the piece. (You can reply on behalf of that character if you think the point made by the student inspires further dialogue.)

Book Trailer Project

book trailer project

Book Trailer Project  is a digital storytelling activity for middle school or high school students after they finish reading a book. Students need to take the key idea from the book to create a short video that persuades people to check out a book they have read.

Doing the book trailer project requires students to summarize, synthesize and analyze the book and put that analysis in their trailer. Furthermore, having students create book trailers is a great way to incorporate  technology in the classroom  and encourage reading. Thus, book trailer project is a great alternative to boring book report assignments, and can easily be done individually or in groups.

So these are some of creative English project ideas you can use in your English class to prompt your students to express their creativity and language skills. These are fun, practical, and learning-inducing.

10 Creative Writing Activities for Secondary English Language Arts

November 2, 2023 by Samantha H.

Whether you are looking for a unit or you have a whole class dedicated to creative writing, there are a plethora of activities and resources to choose from. And just because you teach secondary ELA doesn’t mean your “big kids” don’t enjoy the creative outlet. Not every creative assignment has to be seriously minded or a huge endeavor. Creative writing projects can simply be warm-ups for the class, an activity for early finishers, or a great “filler” assignment when you want to work on writing but don’t want students dedicating weeks to an essay. I’ve got 10 easily applied creative writing activities for secondary ELA.

creative-writing

#1: Googly Eyes

creative-writing-prompts

This activity is super easy and fun- all you need is a bag of stick-on googly eyes! How many smirks will you get from students if they walk in and see the stapler, a book, the globe, a tray from the cafeteria – staring at them? Students can work on writing from a variety of points of view with this easy writing assignment. It’s a perfect warm-up writing activity or a great thing to pair with a discussion about writing from various POVs.

#2: Sensory Writing

creative-writing-exercises

Teach students to key in on sensory details with a writing activity focused on the 5 senses. This is also a low-prep activity. Take students outside for a few minutes at the start of class to pick up an object from outside or pass out a piece of candy to each student (see this example that I use every Halloween!).

You can make it an added challenge by limiting the senses they can use. Bring an object in a bag that students must reach into and describe by touch only. Or have students pull an ordinary item from their backpacks and have them use their sensory writing to describe the item without any sight sensory language. Don’t have enough items? Pick obscure concepts to describe with the senses. How do you describe yellow? Forgiveness? The smell of rain?

#3: Visual Narrative Writing Prompts

creative-writing-ideas

I’m a big fan of providing visuals for writing prompts. It’s as simple as putting together a slide with a prompt and a matching image. Or finding short clips for students to watch. Prompts can be as funny, serious, contemplative, and imaginative as you want. They can be tailored to any concept you are reviewing, upcoming holiday, school event, or just the general interests of your class. This creative writing activity is a little more time intensive to set up a visual and prompt for students.

I do have seasonal visual narrative writing prompts for the whole year available here . Keep your students’ creativity sharp all year long with this collection of 100 writing prompts spanning ten seasonal topics. Fun and easy-to-use, you can implement them as bellringers, routine assignments, creative projects, journaling, and more – all while helping students explore new ideas and honing their narrative techniques.

#4: Roll a Stories

creative-writing-picture-prompts

These are such fun and reusable! Your students will never write the exact same story twice. You can adapt it as a whole-class adventure, small groups, or individually. Different aspects of the story will be determined by the roll of the dice. Once students have all of their story elements, they are ready to put the pieces together into a creative writing project. Again, this is an activity that needs a little set up, but there are resources available like this suspenseful version here or this Thanksgiving-themed version here . Even better, you can grab my seasonal bundle and get a year of activities done for you right here .

#5: Story Passing Activity

creative-writing-activities

In this collaborative story-passing activity, students initiate a story and pass it to others at set time intervals. It can be used alongside supplementary activities like visual narratives. Start by setting a timer for students to write, then have them pass the story to a partner or within a small group. This creative writing exercise offers a unique challenge as students lack complete control over the story’s direction, infusing it with a delightful “mad libs” unpredictability. Continue passing the story until the timer expires or all group members have contributed, and finally, read the collective creation aloud for an engaging and imaginative writing experience.

#6: Photo Writing

creative-writing-lesson-plan

A really easy option for a creative writing assignment is to pull photos and have students write about it. There are many free photo sites that you can utilize, there are even some great ones in Canva that you can use and drop into slides or worksheets for your class. You can search by theme or holidays, or just find a handful that seem interesting and let students write. Your whole class can write from the same photo, or you can print and create a collage on your board for students to walk up and take what inspires them. You can give parameters to the photo writing like, “Must include 20 adjectives about the photo” or “cannot be first person.” The point is, you’re providing a visual for students to concentrate on and build their creative response around it.

#7: Loose Parts Writing

creative-writing-prompts-short-stories

A more symbolic approach to creative writing is loose parts writing. Think about the symbolism that different objects have. Similar to sensory writing, students can use objects to inspire their writing. Better yet, use unassuming objects to inspire. Give one student a craft stick, another a rock, find a pipe cleaner or a marble. Maybe their object isn’t allowed to “be itself” – and the marble is a magic gem, the craft stick is a wand, a rock is a small alien spacecraft. One of my favorite people to learn about Loose Parts Writing from is Angela Stockman. Click here to read one of her blog posts all about it.

#8: Grab Bag Writing

creative-writing-club-activities

Very similar to loose parts writing is grab bag writing. This requires a little bit of prep, but basically each student or small group receives a bag of random objects. All of these must be incorporated into their story telling. You can go with themes like nature items or art supplies. Maybe everything in the bag is the same color.

You can also try a word grab bag. This is a nice option if you’re strapped for prepping several individual bags or just want students to work on a specific set of vocabulary. Each individual or group has a printed list of words that must be used. Or, you can use a site like The Problem Site which has a Grab Bag Random Word Generator that let’s you (or students) select how many words will be added to their grab bag.

#9: Retellings

creative-writing-group-activities

Having students retell stories they are familiar with is a great way to boost confidence and focus. Students don’t necessarily have to start from scratch, but instead are working on those finite detail changes to make a story uniquely theirs. Create a list of fairy tales or common story plots. Maybe use superhero origin stories, the latest action film, or a well-loved book. It doesn’t even need to be a modernization – what if Goldilocks and the Three Bears were retold as an underwater themed story? What about a Romeo and Juliet gender-bender? Click here to see my done-for-you project all about updating a classic story.

#10: Audio-Inspired Creative Writing

class 10 english project creative writing

The world is full of great music, bring a little to the classroom! I would definitely suggest using instrumental arrangements. Have students write a creative writing piece as they listen to the music. You can find short arrangements or longer pieces with multiple movements. You can have students listen to something shorter, then write, or have them write as they listen so the story changes as they listen. There are many classical works from operas that are pretty unknown, so have students write what they think the “story” is from the orchestra and then share what the actual opera production is.

10 Creative Writing Activities That Help Students Tell Their Stories

Lower the stakes and help them get started.

Share your story message written on three post it notes

“I don’t have a story. There’s nothing interesting about my life!” Sound familiar? I don’t know a teacher who hasn’t heard students say this. When we ask our students to write about themselves, they get stuck. We know how important it is for them to tell their own stories. It’s how we explore our identities and keep our histories and cultures alive. It can even be dangerous when we don’t tell our stories (check out this Ted Talk given by novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and share it with your students for more on that). Storytelling is essential for every subject, not just English Language Arts; students dive deeper and engage when they practice thinking about how their own stories intersect with historical events, civic engagement, and the real-world implications of STEM. These 10 creative writing activities can work in every subject you teach:

Here are 10 of our favorite story telling activities that inspire students:

1. write an “i am from” poem.

A students I Am From creative writing activities

Students read the poem “I am From” by George Ella Lyon. Then, they draft a poem about their own identity in the same format Lyon used. Finally, students create a video to publish their poems. We love this one because the mentor text gives a clear structure and example that students can follow. But the end result is truly unique, just like their story.

2. Design a social media post to share an important memory

collage of historical images creative writing activities

How can you use your unique perspective to tell a story? We want our students to learn that they are truly unique and have stories that only they can tell that other people want to hear or could relate to or learn from. In this activity, students watch two Pixar-in-a-Box videos on Khan Academy to learn about storytelling and perspective. Then, they identify an interesting or poignant memory and design a social media post.

3. Create an image using a line to chart an emotional journey

class 10 english project creative writing

How do you show emotion using a single line? In this activity, students watch a Pixar in a Box video on Khan Academy to learn about how lines communicate character, emotion, and tension. Then they experiment with these aspects as they write their story. We love using this for pre-writing and to help students explore their story arc. Also, for students who love to draw or learn visually, this can help them get started telling their story and show them that there are many different ways to tell a story.

4. Tell the story behind your name

class 10 english project creative writing

Sharing the story behind our name is a way to tell a story about ourselves, our culture, and our family history. And if there isn’t a story behind it, we can talk about how we feel about it and describe what it sounds like. In this activity, students use video to introduce themselves to their classmates by discussing the origin of their name. This project asks students to connect their names (and identities) to their personal and familial histories and to larger historical forces. If you’re looking for a mentor text that pairs well with this one, try “My Name” by Sandra Cisneros .

5. Develop a visual character sketch

Give students the time to create a character sketch of themselves. This will help them see how they fit into their story. In this lesson, students create a visual character sketch. They’ll treat themselves like a character and learn to see themselves objectively.

6. Create a webpage to outline the story of your movie

class 10 english project creative writing

Building a story spine is a great way to show students how to put the parts of their story in an order that makes sense. It’s an exercise in making choices about structure. We like this activity because it gives students a chance to see different examples of structure in storytelling. Then, they consider the question: how can you use structure to set your story up for success? Finally, they design and illustrate an outline for their story.

7. Respond to a variety of writing prompts

Sometimes our students get stuck because they aren’t inspired or need a different entry point into telling their story. Give them a lot of writing prompts that they can choose from. Pass out paper and pencils. Set a timer for fifteen minutes. Then, write 3-4 writing prompts on the board. Encourage students to free-write and not worry about whether their ideas are good or right. Some of our favorite prompts to encourage students to tell their story are:

  • I don’t know why I remember

  • What’s your favorite place and why?
  • What objects tell the story of your life?
  • What might surprise someone to learn about you?

8. Create a self-portrait exploring identity and self-expression

class 10 english project creative writing

Part of what makes writing your own story so difficult for students is that they are just building their identity. In this activity, students explore how they and others define their identity. What role does identity play in determining how they are perceived and treated by others? What remains hidden and what is shown publicly?

9. Film a video to share an important story from your life

class 10 english project creative writing

Encourage students to think about how to tell the story of a day they faced their fears. Students consider the question: How can you use different shot types to tell your story? They watch a video from Pixar in a Box on Khan Academy to learn about different camera shots and their use in storytelling. Then, they use Adobe Spark Post or Photoshop and choose three moments from their story to make into shots. We love using this to help students think about pace and perspective. Sometimes what we leave out of our story is just as important as what we include.

10. Try wild writing

Laurie Powers created a process where you read a poem and then select two lines from it. Students start their own writing with one of those lines. Anytime that they get stuck, they repeat their jump-off line again. This is a standalone activity or a daily writing warm-up, and it works with any poem. We love how it lowers the stakes. Can’t think of anything to write? Repeat the jump-off line and start again. Here are some of our favorite jump-off lines:

  • The truth is

  • Some people say

  • Here’s what I forgot to tell you

  • Some questions have no answers

  • Here’s what I’m afraid to write about

5 ENGAGING ELA PROJECTS FOR THE END OF THE YEAR

I can hardly believe it’s almost the end of the 2019-2020 school year. I think it’s safe to say this has been one of the most wild, unexpected, and stressful years ever. Whether you have a few days or a couple weeks left, I wanted to share a few of my favorite mini-units and projects that work well at the end of the year. I hope these ideas help you finish the year strong with your students!

class 10 english project creative writing

1. SLIDESHOWS THAT DON’T SUCK

Want to end the year on a good note with a fun, memorable mini-unit? “Slideshows That Don’t Suck” is one of my favorite projects ever. It’s purposeful, engaging, and just plain FUN. I designed this project when I was tired of cringing at my students’ font choices and hearing them read their slides word-for-word. I decided to tackle the problem of boring, unappealing presentations once and for all with a creative “Slideshows That Don’t Suck” mini-unit.

To make what could have been a pretty straightforward slideshow assignment fun, I gave my students total choice in topics. Well, choice with one tiny stipulation: Their topics had to be weird, random, ridiculous, boring, or obscure. The weirder, the better. I wanted students to work hard to bring a boring topic to life. I wanted them to curiously pursue the mundane and make it entertaining. My students were thrilled and instantly engaged by this challenge. Their topics included mole rats, milk, shoelaces, rocks, stink bugs, air fresheners, and spam accounts…the list goes on. Even the student who quite literally had completed 0 projects all year successfully delivered a slideshow on chicken wings.

As weird and fun as this project sounds, it’s actually a great way to help students practice essential literacy skills. And I promise that you will never have more fun grading their final projects and learning more than you ever wanted to know about the world’s most ridiculous topics! If you want to save yourself some time teaching about slideshows, check out my digital-ready mini-unit. It’s complete with a pacing guide, a gallery walk activity, learning stations, a rubric, and more to make teaching this a breeze!

class 10 english project creative writing

2. INTERVIEW CHALLENGE

This speaking, listening, and writing activity is a great way to keep students meaningfully engaged at the end of the year. I originally created the interview “challenge” for my journalism students, but then I realized it was too fun and meaningful to not use with my other ELA classes. Students can easily complete this with a peer over the phone/video chatting OR with a family member in their house.

Here’s how it works: The “challenge” requires students to reflect upon a memorable moment and briefly share that moment with a partner. Then, the student creates a list of questions and interviews their partner in order to write a mini-story. The better the questions, the better the answers, and the better the stories. Students will quickly realize that taking the time to craft precise, meaningful questions will be well worth it in the end.

The best part of this writing activity is reading through the final stories.  I always learn so much about my students and what has shaped their lives. For everything you need to teach this challenge from start to finish, check out my newly-updated digital resource.

3. RESUME WRITING

In the mood to teach something so practical that you won’t have to answer the question of “When will we ever use this in real life?” Teaching resume writing is just about as real-life as you can get, and it makes for the perfect end-of-year unit. You’ll feel satisfied knowing your students are leaving your class a little more prepared for the elusive real world.

But learning how to draft a resume and cover letter is about more than practicing real-life writing or becoming an employable job candidate. It’s also about growing as a human being. Writing a resume requires introspection, self-awareness, and reflection. Students will wrestle with the questions of “Who am I?” and “How can I represent what I have to offer on a piece of paper?” It’s intimidating but incredibly worthwhile and rewarding. Plus, you just might get a few excited “I got the job!” emails after teaching it, and there’s nothing better than that!

To learn more, you can read this blog post about how I teach resume writing or check out my student-ready resume writing unit. If you have the time, you can follow up resumes with a cover letter mini-unit or even sneak in some virtual mock interview practice. If your students aren’t quite ready for resumes, you can help them prepare for the real world with a career research project. Any of these options will help your students stay focused on the future, even during the chaos of the end of a wild year.

4. PHOTO JOURNAL

If you are searching for a purposeful project that will engage students without overwhelming them, give them a chance to document life through their own lens with a photo journal/essay assignment. Whether you assign it with journal writing or as a standalone project, a photo journal will help students practice essential skills while they contemplate what it means to live during this new normal. Simply ask students to document their lives, express their emotions, and make sense of the world around them.

A photo journal will look different for every student. Maybe it will be daily self-portraits, snapshots of empty streets, or a collection of the colors of nature. In any case, it will give students a chance to pause, reflect, and be present in the world around them. If you assign a photo journal or photo essay, I highly recommend checking out the app Getty Unshuttered. You can read more about it and find other unique photography project ideas HERE.

5. INDEPENDENT READING

Independent reading is a best-practice classic, and it just makes sense during distance learning. If you haven’t already assigned something like this, it’s the perfect activity to close out the end of the year. Give students choice in selecting their texts, as well as choice in the assignments and activities they do to represent their learning.

If students don’t have access to books, encourage them to download the Scribd app, which offers many ebooks and audiobooks. Currently, they are offering a free 30-day subscription without a credit card/payment information. This is what I would recommend to students. If you don’t mind entering your payment information, you can get a free 60-day trial with this link. For digital independent reading activities, you can check out my Novel Study for Any Novel bundle HERE. (It includes everything from “character Instagram posts” to standards-based writing assessments & rubrics!)

I hope these ideas make your last few days or weeks of school enjoyable, calm, and meaningful. Best of luck as you finish the year, and have a FABULOUS summer break! 🙂

fun project activities

The English language is important in our lives as it facilitates communication and is the primary language used to study any subject throughout the world. Students need English because it broadens their minds, develops emotional skills, and improves their quality of life by providing job opportunities. To improve students’ understanding, an English language teacher should incorporate a variety of fun activities and project-based learning.

10 Creative Project ideas for English Language Teachers:

Project idea #1: book clubs.

This project will concentrate on verbal communication abilities. Request that the students choose a book or an excerpt from a book to read. To keep communication streamlined, assign a genre. Students can take turns providing a summary of their reading, along with their thoughts on it. They can discuss the moral values of the characters or alter endings or events to see if the plot becomes more entertaining as a result of these changes.

Project Idea #2: Autobiographies :

In this enjoyable project, you ask students to describe their lives in an interesting tone. To avoid monotony, ask them to only include life events that they consider exciting or unforgettable. Request that they emphasize emotions rather than timelines. You can spice up the exercise by having them write an epilogue about their ideal future life .

Project Idea #3: Class Magazine:

This is an excellent project for all middle and high school classes. You can take it a step further by organizing a competition for the best class magazine among the entire school. You can assign an environmental, health, literary, or societal theme to your class. Then, ask them to gather all of their skills, including idea generation, writing, design, and presentation. You will reap the most benefits if you require each student to create content for one page of the magazine.

Project Idea #4: Comic Strip:

Another extensive project that will not only win your students’ hearts but also allow you to assess their creative abilities. Instruct them to create comic strips depicting interesting events from their lives or imaginations.

Read: Math Games For Struggling Students

Project Idea #5: Editorial/ Fan Letter:

Editorial is one of the best English project ideas for high school students, whereas fan letters are appropriate for students of all English proficiency levels. Ask your high school students to research a societal issue that is important to them. They must then define the problem from the perspective of the aggrieved parties. Request that they write out the issue and have it published in a local or national newspaper

Project Idea #6: Inventions:

Another English project that will combine societal and practical understanding with English learning is Inventions. Students will gain problem-solving skills through this project. Instruct them on how to comprehend a societal or scientific issue. They must provide a solution to the problem once they have understood and defined it. Finally, they must present their solution to the class, along with the need that inspired it.

Project Idea #7:Fables:

For this open-ended English writing project, students will choose one event from their lives. This event should be both intriguing and educational. Then they must retell the story in third person pronouns. Request that they keep the tone conversational and engaging. Finally, ask them to write a conclusion to the story.

Project Idea #8:Imaginary Pen Pals:

This activity requires students to write letters to their favorite fictional and non-fictional characters. In a given novel or historical account, ask them to identify the era, region, and settings that they enjoy the most. They would then express interest in one of its characters and explain why. Finally, they must write a letter to this character praising or advising him or her on his or her role in the piece.

Project Idea #9: Book trailer project:

After finishing a book, students in middle or high school can participate in a book trailer project, which is a digital storytelling activity. Students must use a key idea from the book to create a short video that persuades people to read a book they have already read. Making book trailers with students is a great way to incorporate technology into the classroom while also encouraging reading.

Project activities are an essential component of English language instruction. Projects will liven up your lesson and ensure that your students leave the classroom wanting more, whether you’re teaching adults or children.

10 Innovative Ways to Teach English

Teaching English creatively can be one of the best ways to engage your students in what they’re learning, and make it more likely that they’ll retain information in the long run.

But, if you really want to teach creatively, it has to affect what you teach and how you teach it, not just what projects you include at the end of the unit.

In this guide, I’ll share 10 ways that you can make your lessons more creative, with fun activities, useful resources and more.

1. Teach Through Play

2. incorporate students’ interests into your lessons, 3. blogs for creative writing, 4. video games for motivated practice, 5. skype for real conversations, 6. celebrate student accomplishments, 7. spaced learning to better absorb information, 8. conduct classroom experiments, 9. encourage reflective thinking, 10. foster connections between students.

Play is fun and freeing. It allows students to get engaged with English in a low-stakes, entertaining setting. It creates positive associations with the language and provides the space for unique ideas or new questions to come to the surface.

But unstructured playtime can also devolve quickly into chaos. How can you incorporate play into the ESL classroom without the risk of wasting a class period? Here are some ideas for meaningful, educational classroom play :

  • Games are a great way to encourage play for students. There are plenty of great games for the ESL classroom out there. And if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, create your own or modify one that already exists.
  • Role plays are another way to encourage play among your students, especially if they include dressing up. When students play a role in a dialogue they get the chance to be someone else, and that allows different aspects of their personalities to come through.

Take advantage of the curiosity students already have by noting what interests them, what they ask questions about and what they do in their free time. Ask students what they would like to learn about, and take their ideas seriously.

Then, use students’ interests as a frame for teaching what you need to cover in your curriculum.

Here are some example ideas that you can use as a jumping off point:

  • Thousands of learner friendly videos (especially beginners)
  • Handpicked, organized, and annotated by FluentU's experts
  • Integrated into courses for beginners

  • You can teach the past tense by asking students to summarize current events and pop culture , including anything from a recent soccer match to last week’s episode of “Survivor.”
  • Teach vocabulary from a magazine or blog students like to read in their free time.
  • Have students work on their speaking skills by role playing a favorite celebrity on a recent film or TV show.

But don’t stop there. Model curiosity for them. Give them the tools they need to ask questions and pursue knowledge by showing them how you do so in your own reading, research or daily life.

Highlights has some great suggestions for encouraging curiosity in kids .

Blogs can be a pretty motivating form of self expression, even for the students who aren’t passionate about writing.

Here are some reasons blogging will be beneficial to your students:

  • It gives students a chance to be creative and empowers their voices .
  • Their work will have an actual audience online, which gives their English a practical, non-abstract purpose .
  • As they read one another’s blogs, they can  reflect on their own learning and get ideas from others . This also supports a sense of community within your classroom.
  • And with features like blog comments or messages, students will learn how to  give and receive constructive feedback .

Classroom-friendly Blogging Platforms

  • Edublogs — Edublogs is a student community platform that’s a part of the popular blogging site WordPress. There’s a group class website, which is good for publishing calendars and assignments, as well as study resources. Students can also individually publish their work or be involved in forums.
  • Blogger — This is a pretty typical blogging site. It’s easy to use and free. Many believe it to be easier than WordPress. This may be a good option if students are doing more individual posts and less community classroom interaction.
  • Write About — Write About, like Edublogs, is a classroom writing community. It’s great for its variety of features, including space for journaling, writing assignments, student portfolios and more. There’s also a nice “writing starters” option, which gives your students writing prompts and inspiration.

A lot of my friends who speak English as a second language say that video games were a big help in picking up the language. For many students, the motivation to beat the game helps them stay focused and gives them the drive to practice.

You can recycle your favorite book-focused exercises, like  character analysis, plot analysis and writing about the world and culture of the game .

  • Interactive subtitles: click any word to see detailed examples and explanations
  • Slow down or loop the tricky parts
  • Show or hide subtitles
  • Review words with our powerful learning engine

class 10 english project creative writing

Progress journals  are also an option: daily charting of what happens in the game and how many points were earned.

Great Video Games for ESL Practice

  • Final Fantasy — A role playing game that focuses on a group of characters who fight against an evil villain.
  • Lunar (Silver Star) — One of a series of role playing video games that take place on an uninhabitable moon, Lunar, ruled by a goddess named Athena.
  • Pokemon — A game based on the original anime series. In the original version, the idea is to collect Pokemon critters to beat other trainers and their Pokemon.
  • Oblivion (The Elder Scrolls IV) — Action role playing game. The objective of the game is to thwart a cult that wants to open portal gates to a demonic realm named Oblivion.

You’re probably already familiar with the popular video chat program Skype . But it’s also an excellent tool to give students real English conversation practice with native speakers .

If your school is located in an area with very few native English speakers, Skype lets them practice the skills you’ve been teaching without buying a plane ticket. You can ask some of your friends from the ESL world (or even other English-speaking friends and family) to donate an hour or two for Skype conversations with your classroom.

You can also encourage students to use Skype for individual language exchanges . Find out if your school has any relationships with other international schools, where students are learning your class’ native language and looking for speaking partners.

Celebration is a great way to support the successes of your students, and you should make room to celebrate often.

When you celebrate accomplishments, you help students see that they’re making progress and moving along the road to fluency. And when you point out their successes, they’ll be more motivated to reach for the next goal .

  • You can create class books containing work from each of your students and put the book on display for all the members of your class to enjoy. You might laminate pages and bind them or make your book by placing student work into plastic sleeves and compiling them in a three-ring binder.
  • You can also give students a chance to celebrate their own accomplishments. Consider scheduling regular “open mic” time where students can share their English successes . This is a great opportunity for them to note moments that they’re proud of, whether it’s getting a job after an interview in English or even just correctly asking for directions on the train.

By celebrating your students’ accomplishments, they’ll feel valued, supported and freer to express themselves in English in the future.

  • Learn words in the context of sentences
  • Swipe left or right to see more examples from other videos
  • Go beyond just a superficial understanding

A spaced learning plan takes advantage of the way our brains are wired to help us absorb information more quickly.

It’s a technique that was developed based on research about how memories function  by neuroscientist R. Douglas Fields. The idea is to spend short but consistent periods learning and then reviewing new material to optimize the brain’s natural memory encoding process.

With the right formula, you can teach a new vocabulary set or grammar concept over the course of an hour-long lesson and know that it’ll be encoded into students’ long term memories. It may be hard to imagine, but below we’ll provide a sample lesson to show that it’s totally doable.

Example Spaced Learning Lesson

Say I wanted to teach a lesson on the differences between “would” and “could.” Here’s how my lesson might look:

  • Step 1 (15 minutes):  Use the whiteboard to explain the official grammar rules.
  • Step 2 (5 minutes):  Take a break to watch a video on the coffee culture of Seattle . (Yep, nothing to do with the grammar, just for fun.)
  • Step 3 (15 minutes):  Review differences between “would” and “could” quickly. Take a short fill-in-the-blank quiz.
  • Step 4 (10 minutes):  Play an easy improv game in English. (Also nothing to do with the grammar.)
  • Step 5 (15 minutes):  Do a real-life role play situation involving “would” and “could.” You could choose a restaurant or work situation, depending on what best serves your students.

They’re not just for science class! Fun classroom experiments can be an exciting, creative way to get students speaking and thinking in English.

Encourage use of the scientific method in which students pose a hypothesis and then design experiments to test those hypotheses before coming to a conclusion. You can have students write down their hypotheses and results in English, which can then get presented orally at the end of class.

Here are some ideas for experiments that you can bring into your ESL classroom:

  • FluentU builds you up, so you can build sentences on your own
  • Start with multiple-choice questions and advance through sentence building to producing your own output
  • Go from understanding to speaking in a natural progression.

class 10 english project creative writing

  • The “egg drop” project  is an easy and inexpensive experiment in which students can make predictions and test the outcomes, and it’s also good not-so-clean fun.
  • Bring a little magic to the classroom with these three experiments that make magic before your eyes .
  • Find out what soda does to your teeth with this simple experiment.

Creative teaching doesn’t stop at coming up with new activities. Creative teaching is also about encouraging new ways of thinking, unique ideas and student-driven learning.

One of the best ways to do this is to encourage reflective thinking, or considering and analyzing the surrounding world and past events. For English learners, it means being able to learn from mistakes and decide what goals, practice habits and language tools will help in the path to fluency.

You can introduce reflective thinking in English to your classroom with a simple but effective activity . All you need to do is pick a recent lesson or project from your curriculum and ask students to list three things that went well and one thing they would want to improve.

So for example, if you recently assigned a book report, you might ask the students to list three things they enjoyed about putting together their own report and one thing about the process that could’ve gone better.

At the end of the day, teaching English isn’t really about vocabulary lists and grammar drills. It’s about getting students to effectively communicate in English. It’s important that your creative teaching methods home in on this goal if you want them to have a real impact.

Fostering connections between your students is one of the easiest and most useful ways to do this. You can help create a supportive classroom environment by making sure to carve out time in your lesson plans for group work and collaborative learning .

  • Images, examples, video examples, and tips
  • Covering all the tricky edge cases, eg.: phrases, idioms, collocations, and separable verbs
  • No reliance on volunteers or open source dictionaries
  • 100,000+ hours spent by FluentU's team to create and maintain

class 10 english project creative writing

Pair students up with different classmates, always giving them a common goal. As they pursue their goals and then achieve them, they’ll develop mutual understanding and encouragement and will support one another.

This will create a safe place for students to put their English skills to use in a supportive environment that encourages creativity.

Teaching English creatively is much more challenging than including creative projects in traditional education methods, but it’s so very worth it.

When our students can think for themselves and express their thoughts, support each other and explore and evaluate their own ideas, they’ll be confident learners, speakers and thinkers in the English language.

25 Creative Project Ideas for ELA

class 10 english project creative writing

For many students, creative projects drive the most learning. The project pulls together their interests and skills with the material, and engagement happens.

Projects make a huge difference in any curriculum.

When I look back on my experience as a student, creative projects are the highlight of every year going all the way back to 4th grade (my leaf collection!). As a teacher, I try to build them into almost every unit.

If you’ve been wanting to do more creative projects, but you’re stuck for ways to get started, this post is for you. I’m going to share five different categories of projects to help you find inspiration. If you need a quick fix of project-based inspiration, I’ve created a printable checklist of thirty-two project ideas within these five categories. Print it out and put it by your computer and it’ll be a LONG time before you run out of ideas! Subscribe below and I’ll send it right along.

#1: Projects based on Modern Media  My school once got rid of sophomore honors English and history.  Students could pursue the honors distinction by completing a portfolio of interdisciplinary projects instead.

Our teaching team needed to invent these projects and roll them out every couple of months. Our first was to have the students do a radio show like This American Life. They chose themes related to our curriculum, each recording an introduction, interviews, stories, and a conclusion. Then they mixed all this with music to produce a podcast. The results were phenomenal.

There are many more ways you could use podcasts.

Students in groups could create a podcast in which they interview guests who are characters from a novel.

You could have students go out and interview people in the real world about topics they care about.

You could come up with an interdisciplinary task, like creating a podcast about the school robotics team or maker space, featuring information, background and interviews that allow students to dive into STEM topics through humanities skills.

Another great way to use modern media as the basis of a project is through video creation. You could start a class Youtube channel covering modern news from the student perspective, then let students create videos every couple of months on a major recent happening. The videos should include commentary, interviews, and related storytelling.

Ask students to create two minute versions of the novel you are reading, either through cartoon animation or short acted scenes.

Participate in a collaborative project with students in another country, producing a video as a class that explores your city and its people and sharing it with your partners, then responding to theirs.

Perhaps your students would enjoy drawing up storyboards for the Netflix version of your latest novel. Or writing a television series proposal they might present to PBS. You get the idea. Once you’re rolling, there are hundreds of ways students could explore material with real depth through the medium of modern media.

#2 Festival Projects Who doesn’t love it when their hard work is truly celebrated? There are many ways to create a festival-based final project.

Have students present creative free choice reading projects at a reading festival. Invite younger students who could use inspiration in their reading choices. Play music. Have food. It doesn’t take much preparation to pull off an engaging festival for your students. Let them help; they’ll buy in more and it’ll be less work for you.

Or make the creation of the festival itself the project. Maybe you’d like to do a transcendentalism festival for a local elementary school. Have students in groups plan activities, make food, create posters, postcards, and booklets to share with the younger kids. Put a pair of students in charge of leading a nature hike and another pair in charge of contacting local news media with a press kit and follow-up materials from the festival itself. Revel in the joy success will bring your students.

Performances lend themselves well to festivals too. Perhaps your students are going to write and act mini one-act plays. Any way you could gather everyone together from all your sections on a Thursday night, inviting parents and administrators to join you? Maybe everyone in your class is going to memorize a poem, could they perform them in the school garden after watching slam poetry clips chosen by the class while your ambiance committee serves smoothies? (I love putting students in committees. They seem to love it too.)

When students have created something outstanding, a festival can simply be a way for them to showcase their work.

Say, for example, you’ve had your students create innovative apps designed to solve the problems of literary characters ( one of my own favorite projects ). Let them present the apps at a class innovation fair, similar to a science fair but with a bookish flavor. Either have students take it in turns to wander or answer questions in front of their displays, or give everyone two minutes with the smart board behind them to present their apps as videos, Prezis, Powerpoints, or powerful speeches.

Thinking about ways to give students an authentic audience and a memorable day amps up engagement so much. I find that festivals get everyone excited, every time.

#3 Interdisciplinary Projects The world is getting more interdisciplinary all the time. If a student wants to be known for great cooking, it’s a good idea for him to be able to take good photos, make videos, write blog posts and run social media if he hopes to write a cookbook someday. Entrepreneurs must be good not only at whatever they hope to build a business around but also at all things media and marketing. Athletes must manage their personal brands and communicate with the news. Historians better be ready to broadcast live for their museum’s Facebook page.

Providing students with ways to mix and match what they are passionate about from multiple disciplines sets them up to be happier later on.

Let’s imagine a project or two you could do with colleagues in several departments at your school.

Art: Ask an art teacher if he or she would consider hosting a gallery show in your school’s display area with work from your students. Then bring the art teacher in as a guest speaker as you introduce a project to represent the nature of one character from a novel through an artistic medium. Imagine a gallery featuring short videos, paintings, drawings, photo essays, murals, and sculptures expressing the nature of Hester Prynne from The Scarlet Letter or Puck from A Midsummer Night’s Dream . Have students write up reflective analysis papers demonstrating how their work represents their careful character analysis, and display these to accompany the art.

History : Talk to a history teacher about some of the important themes of the history curriculum in the year you teach. Choose one major theme and share it with students. Have students begin hunting for news articles, headlines, and images from modern media that connect current events and trends with this powerful theme from their history study. Get permission to create a giant collage somewhere in your school space. Have every student write a paper connecting ten things they find on the wall to the theme, and choose the best to publish and display by the collage for the whole school to read.

Math : Ask students to interview math faculty about exciting math-based careers. Then have them create a newspaper called “Why Math is Cool” to publish and share with younger kids who find math a struggle. Send them out in pairs to research the topics and create elements of the newspaper – comic strips, columns, infographics, articles, advice columns, etc.

When you do an interdisciplinary project, you not only engage your students but you understand them better as students. More interdisciplinary connections may naturally arise, and your newly strengthened relationship with your colleague in another department can only help.

class 10 english project creative writing

#4 Inhabit a School Space Again, this project provides that all-important piece, the authentic audience. When students know they will be creating a project that many people will see, it makes a big difference to their motivation.

Perhaps your students could exhibit final projects in the school office. Perhaps the culmination of a free choice reading unit could be the creation of a huge book display with recommendation blurbs in the library.

Maybe poetry slam winners could perform as part of a school assembly or at a parent night. Or a photography class could shoot photos of your class performance of Death of a Salesman to display in the entryway of the school.

Is there a dark ugly wall somewhere in your building waiting to be filled with a collage of great literary quotations? Or a mural featuring three important themes from great American novels?

Inhabiting a school space connects your classroom to the community and the community to your classroom.

#5 Take part in a Contest or Challenge

If authentic audience is king, competition is queen. Both have great power for motivation, like it or not. Engaging students in the writing process by taking part in a challenge or participating in a competition is an easy win.

Why not try NANOWRIMO (National Novel Writing Month) with your students this year? Can you imagine the feeling of accomplishment that would come with writing a novel as a teenager?

Or build a unit around submitting to a national essay contest ( here’s a list of great ones ) or one in your community.

You could even start a youth writing contest in your city and make your students the judges. What a lesson in good writing it would be to create a rubric and discuss the finalists to determine what pieces are the best! Similarly, you could start a website to publish student writing and make your students the editors and the public relations managers. ___

I hope you’ve found some inspiration for your next project. To borrow a line from Pringles chips, “once you start, you can’t stop!”

Format Of Creative Writing Topics For Grade 4:

The format of creative writing is flexible, allowing students to explore different styles and formats based on their interests and creativity. However, a basic structure can be followed to help students organize their writing:

1. Introduction: The introduction should grab the reader’s attention and introduce the topic or theme of the writing. It can be a sentence or two that sets the scene or introduces a character.

2. Body: The body of the writing should contain the main content and story of the writing. This can be broken down into paragraphs or sections that build upon the introduction and develop the plot or characters.

3. Conclusion: The conclusion should wrap up the writing and leave the reader with a sense of closure. It can be a summary of the story or a final thought or message for the reader.

1. A Day in the Life of a Superhero:

Today was just another day for my superhero alter ego. I woke up early, put on my trusty suit, and headed out to save the world. The first task of the day was to stop a robbery in progress. I swooped in and caught the criminals before they could get away with the loot. Next, I had to stop a runaway train from crashing into the city. My journey to the center of the Earth began when I discovered a secret passage in my backyard. I followed the tunnel deep underground and eventually found myself in a mysterious underground world. As I explored this strange new world, I encountered all sorts of amazing creatures, from giant underground rivers to glowing crystals. But my journey was not without danger. I had to dodge falling rocks and avoid getting lost in the labyrinthine tunnels. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I reached the center of the Earth and gazed in wonder at the molten core.

4. A Visit to a Planet in Outer Space:

One day, I was taking a walk when a spaceship landed right in front of me. The door opened, and a friendly alien invited me aboard. We blasted off into space and traveled to his home planet, which was filled with strange creatures and plants. I was amazed at how different everything was compared to Earth. The alien showed me around the planet and even introduced me to his family. We played games and shared food, and I felt like I had made new friends. But soon, it was time to head back to Earth. As we said our goodbyes and the spaceship lifted off, I realized that this would be a day I would never forget.

5. A Secret Hidden in a Haunted House:

I had always been curious about the old abandoned house on the corner of my street. One day, I decided to explore it. As I stepped inside, I felt a chill run down my spine. The house was spooky and dark, and I could hear strange noises coming from the shadows. But then, I noticed a glimmer of light coming from a crack in the wall. I pushed aside the old wallpaper and discovered a secret room. Inside the room, I found an old diary that belonged to the previous owner of the house. As I read through the diary, I realized that there was a treasure hidden somewhere in the house. I set out to find the treasure and eventually discovered it hidden in a secret compartment behind the fireplace. It was an amazing adventure that I would never forget.

6. A Day at the Beach:

The sun was shining bright, and the waves were crashing against the shore. It was the perfect day for a trip to the beach. I spent the day building sandcastles, collecting seashells, and splashing in the ocean. The salty sea breeze filled my nostrils, and the warm sand tickled my toes. As the sun began to set, I sat on the beach and watched the colors of the sky change from blue to orange to pink. It was a beautiful moment that I wished could last forever.

7. A Surprise Party for a Friend:

My best friend’s birthday was coming up, and I wanted to plan a surprise party. I gathered all of our friends and decorated the backyard with balloons and streamers. When my friend arrived, we yelled, “Surprise!” and she was overjoyed. We played games, ate cake, and danced to our favorite songs. It was a perfect party that brought us all closer together.

8. An Imaginary Creature and Its Adventures:

My imagination had always been wild, but today, it was especially active. I imagined a creature with wings, a horn, and rainbow-colored fur. This creature, which I named Rainbow, had all sorts of adventures. We flew through the clouds, explored ancient ruins, and even met a talking tree. It was an exciting and magical journey that allowed me to explore my creativity.

9. A Day in the Life of a Talking Animal:

What if animals could talk? I imagined a world where my pet dog, Charlie, could talk. I wrote about a day in his life, from waking up and begging for breakfast to chasing squirrels in the park. Charlie had a lot to say and had all sorts of adventures. It was a fun and entertaining way to explore what it would be like if animals could communicate with us.

10. A Time Travel Adventure to the Past or Future:

What if we could travel through time? I imagined a time machine that could take me anywhere I wanted to go. I wrote about traveling to the future and seeing what the world would be like in 100 years. I saw flying cars, robots doing chores, and people living on Mars. It was a fascinating adventure that made me think about what the future might hold. Alternatively, I could write about traveling back in time and witnessing historical events, such as the signing of the Declaration of Independence or the first moon landing.
