Cover letters, short or long, are increasingly unpopular among job seekers. However, a 2023 survey of 625 hiring managers across the nation found that 60 percent of companies still require cover letters, writes Rebecca Tay, Ph.D. at ResumeGenius. 

While medium and large companies are more likely to require cover letters (72 percent and 69 percent, respectively), nearly half of small businesses (49 percent) do too.

Because hiring managers use those letters to decide which applicants to interview, Tay writes:

49 percent say a strong cover letter can convince them to interview an otherwise weak candidate.

18 percent say a weak cover letter can cause them to throw out the application of an otherwise strong candidate.

33 percent say a good letter can elevate a weak applicant, and a bad letter can hurt a strong applicant.

What’s so great about cover letters?

A cover letter allows you to explain yourself.

In a LinkedIn post, Rachel Bradley , executive director at Sisu Youth Services in Oklahoma City, writes: “When your resume shows no direct or even indirect experience with the job to which you are applying, use that short cover letter to simply tell me why you are qualified or even interested. With no experience or explanation, you're wasting my time and yours.”

It’s in your cover letter that you can include referrals, explain resume gaps, or let the recruiter know you’ve done your research on the company you’re applying to.

A cover letter tells the hiring manager why you want to join the company

Ian Siegel , CEO and cofounder of ZipRecruiter, estimates hiring managers spend an average of 20 seconds reviewing a cover letter. They’re looking for the applicant’s reason for wanting to join the company.

“The golden rule of applying to a job is showing specific interest,” he says. “A lot of people write cover letters to describe their background and explain why they’re a fit for the role. But I would start my cover letter with the sentence, ‘I’m so excited to apply to this job because ... ’ and fill in the blank about the business.”

Benefits of a short cover letter

Executive career strategist, business brand promoter and CEO of Career Trend, Jacqui Barrett-Poindexter , tells InHerSight that “in today’s attention-deprived job market, a short(er) cover letter often is the default.” She notes that “recruiters and resume screeners regularly lament the burden of cover letters.”

“An energy-filled and targeted letter aimed at the reader’s needs can serve to bring your story from being stuck at the virtual bottom of a digital resume pile to the top.” 

Of course, “brevity shouldn't be the primary goal when learning how to write a cover letter,” Kellie Hanna , a career advice expert, says. 

“Instead, you should focus on making a case to an employer that you are the right person for the role. A cover letter allows you to highlight your most relevant skills and experience, showcase your communication skills, and prove to an employer that you are willing to go the extra mile.”

Must-haves in your short cover letter

Each cover letter you write must be unique, tailored for the company and position. Include keywords from the job ad, which can be helpful if the recruiter is using applicant tracking software. Make the letter skimmable by writing concise, focused paragraphs, and be sure to include at least one achievement relevant to the role you’re applying for.

Hanna says that all cover letters—whether long or short—should be written using a professional tone and must contain the following elements:

A header that contains your name and contact information. This information should match that on your resume.

A salutation , ideally with the hiring manager’s name.

An opening paragraph that introduces you and concisely tells the hiring manager why you are the best fit for the job.

A paragraph that explains why you’re interested in the job and which of your past achievements are most relevant to the role.

A closing paragraph in which you reiterate your interest, thank the hiring manager for reviewing your credentials and invite them to contact you.

A professional sign-off, such as “Sincerely” or “Thank you.”

Barrett-Poindexter explains that “with hundreds of applicants vying for a single position, setting yourself apart with crisp messaging that underlines your value can kindle the right, interview-generating reaction. It can also bring forward one to two key points that match you to the recruiter’s or screener’s needs, either before or after they have scanned your resume.”

She adds that the well-researched and written short cover letter will include these must-have absolutes:

Salutation addressed to the name of the recruiter , influential gate-keeper, or decision-maker in the hiring process.

A strong hint of proof that you know what the industry and company to which you are applying struggles with and how you will help solve their problems.

Evidence that you understand the hiring company's mission and values and how you align with both.

Link to your LinkedIn profile and any related portfolios (including your own personally branded website).

Enough content to provide value, but not so much that you exceed two to three paragraphs, or one-half of a page.

Hanna provides the following sample of a short cover letter, saying it’s “concise, focusing on key achievements and skills relevant to the job. It invites the reader to consider the applicant's qualifications without going into excessive detail, which is perfect for situations where brevity is appreciated.”

Barrett-Poindexter explains that “a one- or two-line cover letter will only serve to introduce the role you are applying for and maybe provide one hook as to your value, but will fall short of providing any kind of meaningfully tailored message. Follow the instructions below to create a professional yet simple job application letter:

1. Use the Right Format of an Application Letter for a Job

Before your job application reaches the recruiter, it’ll most likely need to go through an automated ATS scan . And to ensure everything is read correctly, your application letter requires clear and clean formatting.

To format your letter of application correctly, follow these guidelines:

  • Use the same font you chose for your resume .
  • Left-align all content.
  • Keep your application letter length to only one page.
  • Just like with your resume margins , set them to 1-inch on your job application letter as well.
  • Leave ample white space by using double-spacing between paragraphs and setting line spacing to 1.15.

Also, save your letter of application for a job in a PDF format unless instructed otherwise. This will keep your formatting and the general layout of the document intact.

In theory, both of these examples present the same candidate. But the difference in said presentation makes the second sample bite the dust.

Candidate #2 doesn’t check any of the aforementioned boxes, and it shows. He has no enthusiasm, no measurable achievement to catch the eye, and he doesn’t even mention the company by name, meaning he probably sent the same letter of application to hundreds of other jobs.

But not everyone can show a work achievement straight away. If you’re applying for your first job, focus on the two other aspects of your application letter’s first paragraph. Like so:

4. Prove Your Expertise in the Main Body

Now that you’ve hooked the recruiter, it’s time to reel them in. Metaphorically, of course.

There are a lot of different things you can include in a letter of application . But all of them must share a certain similarity. They have to be relevant to the position you’re applying for. And that’s especially true in the main body section of the job application letter. Why? Because here, you’ll list some enticing work achievements and work skills you possess.

See what lack of relevance and quantified achievements do to a letter of application? The second candidate could best fit the position, but he will not get picked with that paragraph.

On the other hand, in the first example, relevance guides our candidate. He doesn’t bother talking about their previous job in a different field. Instead, he presents UX skills and accomplishment statements and, most of all, quantifies them for maximum impact.

Also, it’s a letter of application . So tell the recruiter why you want to apply to this specific company. Show a cultural fit, mention your values, and talk about what you can bring to the company.

But then again… How does someone without experience tackle the second paragraph of a job application letter? They should show their drive towards the specific position and the steps they have already undertaken towards their goal. Just like that:

During my studies, I worked on several UX research projects, including conducting usability testing, creating personas, and analyzing user feedback. In addition, I have completed a certification in UX Research and Design, where I learned how to conduct user interviews, design research studies, and analyze data. I am proficient in various research methodologies and tools such as surveys, A/B testing, heat maps, and user flow analysis.

And despite the lack of measured achievements, this candidate is dedicated to becoming a UX specialist. No employer is going to have any doubts about whether he will be a driven employee at their company.

Expert Hint: As tempting as it may be, never copy your resume into the letter of application. Of course, you can show one or two of the same things but focus more on presenting other achievements and skills.

5. Finish Your Application Letter With a Clear CTA

Do you know the saying, “It’s not important how you start, it’s important how you finish?” Well, in letters of application, that’s not really a good saying, as you do need a strong start, but a strong finish is just as crucial.

So don’t screw up by including a non-ending “looking forward to hearing from you” or “thank you for considering my application.” Way too many candidates finish their letters of job application this way, and it just doesn’t work.

It’s uninspiring and boring.

Even when employers don’t require a job application letter , writing one will help you highlight your skills and achievements and get the hiring manager’s attention. The only time not to send one is when the job listing says not to do so. It can help, and it definitely won't hurt to include an application letter with your resume.

A job application letter, also known as a cover letter , should be sent or uploaded with your resume when applying for jobs. While your resume offers a history of your work experience and an outline of your skills and accomplishments, the job application letter you send to an employer explains why you are qualified for the position and should be selected for an interview.

Writing this letter can seem like a challenging task. However, if you take it one step at a time, you'll soon be an expert at writing application letters to send with your resume.

Before you begin writing your job application letter, do some groundwork. Consider what information you want to include, and keep in mind that space is limited.

The biggest clues are within the job advertisement, so spend some time decoding the job listing . Next, match your qualifications with the employer's wants and needs.

Include Your Most Relevant Qualifications

Make a list of your relevant experience and skills. For instance, if the job ad calls for a strong leader, think of examples of when you've successfully led a team. Once you've jotted down some notes and have a sense of what you want to highlight in your letter, you're ready to start writing.

Writing Guidelines for Job Application Letters

Writing a job application letter is very different from a quick email to a friend or a thank-you note to a relative. Hiring managers and potential interviewers have certain expectations when it comes to the letter's presentation and appearance, from length (no more than a page) and font size to style and letter spacing . Keep these general guidelines in mind, but always stick to any explicit instructions in the job listing or application portal.

Length: A letter of application should be no more than one page long. Three to four paragraphs are typical.

Format and Page Margins: A letter of application should be single-spaced with a space between each paragraph. Use 1-inch margins and align your text to the left, which is the standard alignment for most documents.

Font: Use a traditional font such as Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri. The font size should be between 10 and 12 points.

What to Include in Each Section of the Letter

There are also set rules for the sections included in the letter, from salutation to sign-off, and how the letter is organized. Here's a quick overview of the main sections included in a job application letter:

Heading: A job application letter should begin with both your and the employer's contact information (name, address, phone number, email), followed by the date. If this is an email rather than an actual letter, include your contact information at the end of the letter, after your signature.

Salutation: This is your polite greeting. The most common salutation is "Dear Mr./Ms." followed by the person's last name. Find out more about appropriate cover letter salutations , including what to do if you don't know the person's name or are unsure of a contact's gender.

In the first paragraph , you'll want to mention the job you are applying for and where you saw the job listing.

The next paragraph(s) are the most important part of your letter. Remember how you gathered information about what the employer was seeking, and how you could meet their needs? This is where you'll share those relevant details on your experience and accomplishments.

The third and last part of the body of the letter will be your thank you to the employer; you can also offer follow-up information.

Complimentary Close: Sign off your email or letter with a polite close, such as "Best," or "Sincerely," followed by your name.

Signature: When you're sending or uploading a printed letter, end with your handwritten signature, followed by your typed name. If this is an email, simply include your typed name, followed by your contact information.

  • Always write one. Unless a job posting explicitly says not to send a letter of application or cover letter, you should always send one. Even if the company does not request a letter of application, it never hurts to include one. If they do ask you to send a letter, make sure to follow the directions exactly (for example, they might ask you to send the letter as an email attachment or type it directly into their online application system).
  • Use business letter format. Use a formal business letter format when writing your letter. Include your contact information at the top, the date, and the employer’s contact information. Be sure to provide a salutation at the beginning and your signature at the end.
  • Sell yourself. Throughout the letter, focus on how you would benefit the company. Provide specific examples of times when you demonstrated skills or abilities that would be useful for the job, especially those listed in the job posting or description. If possible, include examples of times when you added value to a company.

Numerical values offer concrete evidence of your skills and accomplishments.

  • Use keywords. Reread the job listing, taking note of any keywords (such as skills or abilities that are emphasized in the listing). Try to include some of those words in your cover letter. This will help the employer see that you are a strong fit for the job.
  • Keep it brief. Keep your letter under a page long, with no more than about four paragraphs. An employer is more likely to read a concise letter.
  • Proofread and edit. Employers are likely to overlook an application with a lot of errors. Read through your cover letter, and if possible, ask a friend or career counselor to review the letter. Proofread for any grammar or spelling errors.

What Constitutes a Good Cover Letter?

  • You are able to introduce yourself properly to the employer.

Cover Letter Writing Basics

One of the most basic things that should be considered when you are writing a cover letter is the format. This is true whether you are a first-time applicant or an applicant with extensive work experience. Always remember that a cover letter should not exceed one page. Any more than one page means that you have to rethink what you have included. A few paragraphs, about 3 to 5, would be enough. You have to make sure that it is informative without being too long and boring. Each paragraph of your  entry-level cover letter  should be straight to the point but still be giving out all the necessary information to prove that you are a good candidate for the available position.

A standard cover letter format starts with the following:

  • mobile/telephone number,
  • present address, and
  • email address.

Make sure you write down all the correct information as this will be how the recruiter will be able to get in touch with you. One wrong number or letter on your contact information can make you lose an opportunity for a great career.

You may also opt to make use of a personal letterhead  that reflects all of the information about you. Make sure that this is placed at the topmost part of the letter.   • The date and the recipient’s information.  Two spaces after your contact information, the date will reflect and another two spaces after the date, you will write down the contact information of the company.
  • Salutation.  Just like any  formal letter format , a cover letter will start with a salutation. The typical,  “Dear [Name of Recipient],”  will be used. Make sure that you address the person properly and use the appropriate titles such as  Ms., Mr., Dr., Atty., etc. 
  • Paragraph #1.  Start strong! Your first few words must directly capture the attention of the recruiter. Introduce yourself and make sure that you describe the position you are applying for.
  • Paragraph #2.  In this paragraph, take the opportunity to let the recruiter know how interested you are about the job opportunity. Highlight your skills and qualifications that you have and describe how these will benefit the company. Also, do not forget to research about the company and the vacant position they are offering.
  • Paragraph #3 and #4.  This is where you will talk about your certifications, achievements, and the training you have undergone in order to be considered as a qualified candidate. Any clarifications you might also have about the company and the job can be stated in this section of the letter.
  • Final Paragraph.  Wrap up your letter. This is the part where you express your gratitude and where you will invite them to get in touch with you in case they want to clarify anything about you and what you have stated in your application documents.
  • Complimentary close and signature.  End the letter in a respectful manner (i.e.  Sincerely, Respectfully yours, Yours truly, etc.).   Leave a few spaces then type your name and affix your signature above your name.

Additional Reminders Regarding the Cover Letter Format

  • Make sure you know who you are sending your letter to. A quick research about the company and who is in charge of the recruitment is recommended. The more specific, the better.

  • School or volunteer work where you showcased your skills and qualifications

A Few Reminders about Job Application Cover Letters

  • One page is enough for a cover letter. We cannot emphasize it enough but a one-page cover letter should contain all the necessary information you need to relay to the employer. The more concise, the better.

There’s always a first time for everything and for those who have never had a job before it can feel daunting to submit a job application when you have no job experience to write on your application letter.

Don’t fret, there’s a way to write your very first application letter so that you can land a job that you can put on the next version of your letter that you’ll write for your next career move.

Before you write your job application letter, you’ll want to go over the job ad a few times and take note of some of these information. Who do you send the application to? What qualifications are they looking for for the position? What requirements do they want you to submit?

You’ll want to write your application letter in a way that you communicate your skills and capabilities in a way that aligns with their idea of a perfect candidate.And of course, you’ll want to submit the complete requirements and these would almost always include a resume.

For the salutation, a “Dear Hiring Manager,” may be fine, but you’ll make a better first-impression if you are able to do your research on the company and find out who the head of their human resources is and address your letter to them. It’s safe to use the last name of the person who will be reviewing your letter along with a Ms. or Mr. When applying to small and medium-sized companies, you may address your letter to the owner or managing director of the firm.

Start your letter by stating the position that you are applying for. Hiring managers may have a handful of open positions so it’s best that you let them know what position you’re aiming for.

As a first-time employee, you may not have a job experience or the references yet to put on your letter but there are still quite a few achievements in your life that you can talk about that may help you earn an invitation to an interview. You can highlight your education, volunteer work, membership at any organization, or any special programs that you may have joined.

NYCHA opens Section 8 housing applications for eligible families for first time in nearly 15 years

NEW YORK (WABC) -- NYCHA is reopening its wait list for Section 8 housing applications for the first time in nearly 15 years.

Applications for NYCHA's Housing Choice Voucher program will be open from midnight on June 3 through end of day on June 9.

Created by the Housing and Community Development Act of 1978, the federal program pays the bulk of rent for low-income families who usually contribute 30% of their income toward the total cost.

Demand for the limited number of housing vouchers is typically extremely high, which is why the city locked its wait list back in 2009.

The decision to reopen the applications is because of a critical shortage of affordable housing and the overflowing of city shelters.

"After 15 years, we are reopening NYCHA's doors to hundreds of thousands of new Section 8 applicants and helping more New Yorkers find the housing they need," said NYC Mayor Eric Adams. "Addressing our city's housing crisis means using every tool our city has, and that's exactly what we are doing. From advancing 24 housing projects on public land this year through our '24 in 24' plan, to fighting for our 'City of Yes for Housing Opportunity' proposal to build a little more housing in every neighborhood, we are committed to helping every New Yorker find and stay in their home."

According to NYCHA , there are about 85,000 housing vouchers and over 25,000 households who currently participate in the program.

Eligible households can apply for the program through NYCHA's website .

4 Tips to Complete College Applications on Time

W ith multiple components and deadlines, the college application process can be daunting for some students. Since prospective students are often juggling college applications alongside high school classes and activities, experts say it's easy to fall behind or procrastinate.

"Procrastination is a stress response, and it makes sense that some students who are anxious about the college process will avoid working on their applications in a timely fashion," Angela Warfield, principal consultant and founder of admissions consulting firm Compass Academics, wrote in an email.

"This can become a real problem if students wait too long to request transcripts, test score reports or letters of recommendation. Since the students need to rely on other people to submit these materials, they need to make sure to give those people as much time as possible to get those materials in before deadlines."

There are some exceptions where applications are accepted later, and schools that offer rolling admissions may be good last-minute options for students. But May 1 has traditionally been the decision deadline across higher education, even earning the name "College Decision Day," so students typically need to follow that timeline. If a student is applying for early decision or early action , there will be even earlier deadlines to submit application materials.

A well-thought-out plan, anchored by a few organizational tips, can keep students on track with college applications. Here are four tips that experts say students can follow to complete their college applications on time.

  • Start planning early.
  • Create a detailed checklist.
  • Ask for recommendation letters early.
  • Budget time for application essays.

Start Planning Early

Because there are multiple steps involved in applying to college, many of which require help from other people, experts say the most foolproof method to alleviate anxiety is to start early.

The Common App , which is used by more than 1,000 schools, opens Aug. 1 each year, meaning students can't officially submit applications through the platform until then. But those looking to get a head start can create an account during their junior year and get familiar with the platform, says Denard Jones, lead college counselor at Empowerly, a college admissions consulting company.

And though it may not be as fun as relaxing by the pool or hanging out with friends, students would be wise to use the the summer months ahead of senior year – when they have no academic obligations – to begin or complete college application tasks, such as completing any write-ups for the extracurricular or activities section , experts say.

Otherwise, "it makes the fall of your senior year that much more hard,” Jones says. “Because you still have to do academic work, you still have to go through the semester, and now you’re trying to pull all this information together."

Create a Detailed Checklist

Keeping track of the various application requirements and deadlines can be streamlined with a checklist. School counselors and independent college counselors can typically provide students with a checklist, and the College Board also provides a list for students and parents to use.

Universities also typically have an application checklist on their website, which may include directions or items specific to them.

If applying to multiple colleges, students and parents may also want to create a master spreadsheet or other document to keep track of deadlines and when parts of the application are complete. Setting up reminders on a digital calendar for important dates can also help, experts say.

"Dates to consider include: application deadlines, testing date/score submissions deadlines, dates for recommenders to submit letters of support and important scholarship deadlines," Warfield says.

Ask for Recommendation Letters Early

Letters of recommendation from teachers, school counselors and other sources are important to providing college admissions officers deeper context and colorful details about applicants. Like personal essays, they can help humanize applicants and give schools an idea of whether a student would succeed academically or fit in socially within their campus culture.

A strong recommendation can tip the scales in a student's favor, especially in situations where there are academic blemishes. A weak or vague letter may reflect poorly and cause an application to stand out for the wrong reasons, experts say.

Students should choose the right people to write letters, such as teachers or counselors who know them best. It's equally important to give recommendation writers enough notice so they aren't asked to craft a hastily written letter.

Richard Tench, a school counselor at St. Albans High School in West Virginia, suggests giving recommenders at least two weeks to complete the letter, but in some cases it may be wise to ask even earlier.

“That will provide them the time to say yes or no," he says, "but that also provides them the time to think about it and write a comprehensive letter."

Some teachers are pressed for time and commit to writing a limited number of recommendation letters each year. Once those spots are booked, students shouldn't be surprised if their request is denied. This could force students to pivot to a recommender who doesn't know them as well.

“The more time you give a recommender to write, the better," Jones says. "That way, hopefully it won’t be this template that’s just cut and paste and doesn’t really help the admissions offices much."

Budget Time for Application Essays

Personal statements are often the most time-consuming and stressful part of the application process, Warfield says. But this is another area where students can get a head start during their junior year or the summer before their senior year.

The Common App typically announces essay questions for the upcoming application cycle in January or February, giving students ample time to prepare for or begin writing the essays. Warfield recommends students begin working on essays in early June, ahead of their senior year, which allows more time to edit and perfect their essays with peers or trusted mentors.

Schools that require supplemental essays vary on when those prompts are announced, but Warfield says students should start on them as early as possible and "work smarter, not harder" when completing them.

"Look for similar themes and questions where your answers aren’t likely to change," such as what you want to major in or what community means to you, she says. "You can revise these essays to be school-specific, but not completely rewrite them. Don’t duplicate your efforts."

Starting on essays early can be particularly helpful for students who struggle or need additional assistance with writing the essay, she says, adding that students who procrastinate may be tempted to rely on another person or an artificial intelligence tool such as ChatGPT to write their essay. While some colleges are using AI in admissions, colleges expect the personal statement to be a student's authentic writing.

"As someone who’s evaluated student writing for 30 years, it is not that hard to spot an AI-generated college essay," Warfield says. "If students try to use AI as a shortcut, colleges use AI detectors and seasoned admissions readers to detect derivative material."

This could be anything created by AI technology, and use of such language in essays could harm an applicant's admissions chances, experts say.

The NYC Housing Authority (NYCHA) has started accepting applications for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program waiting list for the first time in nearly 15 years.

NEW YORK CITY - The NYC Housing Authority (NYCHA) has started accepting applications for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program waiting list for the first time in nearly 15 years. 

The window runs from midnight on June 3 until 11:59 PM on June 9, 2024.

"After 15 years, we are reopening NYCHA's doors to hundreds of thousands of new Section 8 applicants and helping more New Yorkers find the housing they need," NYC Mayor Eric Adams said. "Addressing our city's housing crisis means using every tool our city has, and that's exactly what we are doing."

How does Section 8 work?

Section 8 HCV is a federally funded program administrated by NYCHA that provides rental subsidies for eligible low-income families to rent housing in the private market.

As many NYCHA residents continue to struggle with basic quality of life issues and an uncertain future, housing authority management practices are coming under growing scrutiny. A federal investigation revealed a decades-long corruption scheme that could be just the beginning. So what does it mean for residents?

NYCHA currently administers the largest Section 8 program in the country, providing subsidies to 241,117 residents. 

"Reopening the Section 8 waitlist is a milestone in our ongoing efforts to address our housing crisis," said Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer. "Making this critical subsidy available to more New Yorkers exemplifies NYCHA’s commitment to improving the lives of tenants."

Households that receive a voucher will be able to search for housing in their preferred neighborhoods. Qualifying households must have a gross income of 50% or below the area median income and generally pay 30% of their adjusted monthly income toward rent, with the subsidy in most cases covering the remaining portion.

NYCHA will start accepting applications for the reopening of the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program beginning June 3 and running until June 9.

The program will randomly select 200,000 applications by lottery to join the new waitlist, which is expected to be established by August 1, 2024.

If you’re a first-year applicant —meaning you are a student currently attending secondary school or high school—this is where you’ll gain more insight into Temple’s application process, such as how to apply, application deadlines, cost, aid and scholarship information, and more. Please take some time to carefully review the application steps and use the table of contents below to jump to a certain topic or section. 

 How to Apply 

Join students from more than 115 countries and discover our 600+ academic programs and the many cultural experiences on Temple’s campus and in the city of Philadelphia.

1. Make an application plan.

As a first-year applicant, you’ll first want to pick a deadline goal for the fall semester and decide if you'd like to apply Early Action (due Nov. 1) or Regular Decision (extended to July 15) . You can also apply to start in the spring semester (due Nov. 1).

2. Apply using the Common Application.

Temple exclusively uses the Common Application. When completing your application for Temple, be sure to indicate whether you’re applying Early Action or Regular Decision. Even if you apply before or by the Early Action deadline,  you still must indicate Early Action on your application to ensure you will receive an admissions decision early . 

There’s a required application fee of $55 , which you will submit at the same time as the Common Application unless you qualify for a waiver.

3. Complete your application by sending official documents.

After submitting the Common Application, you’ll also need to provide supporting materials to complete your application to the university.

Application Supporting Materials

The following documents may be necessary to complete your application. Please review the testing options to determine whether you wish to submit academic testing to support your application. If your documents are not in English, please provide them in the original language and with an English translation.

Your application must include all official and original academic records from any secondary school you have ever attended.

If you are attending a secondary school curriculum that is four years, Temple University reviews grades nine through 11 as well as your current progress in 12th grade (term/quarter/semester/predicted) or your final transcript if you completed secondary school.  

If you are attending a secondary school curriculum that is only three years, we strongly recommend you submit the final year of your primary school as well.

Option 1: Apply without standardized testing

At Temple University we are pleased to offer applicants a test-optional solution for submitting their application. Test optional means that you are not required to submit ACT or SAT for admission consideration and is typically chosen by students who feel their test scores do not accurately reflect their academic abilities or who were not able to take SAT or ACT tests due to circumstances outside of their control.    Applicants who choose this option are equally eligible to receive merit scholarships.

Option 2: Apply with standardized testing. Submit official SAT or ACT results. These must be sent officially from the testing agency. 

For any applicant submitting official testing, please use the following Temple University school codes or methods.

  • SAT or TOEFL through Educational Testing Services (ETS)—school code 2906
  • American College Testing (ACT)—school code 3724
  • IELTS: Simply email your TRF number to  [email protected]  and include your full name and TUid.

Submit documents and other testing to  [email protected]  through a school official or examining/testing body or submit by mailing to the following address.

Documents sent by mail may delay application processing. For information on how documents or testing can be submitted, please contact the  International Admissions office . Submitted documents become the property of Temple University and we cannot return them to you. If you prefer, you can retain your originals and submit notarized copies.

All applicants, regardless of which option they choose, should review the English language proficiency test scores item to determine whether they are required to submit English language proficiency scores to support their application .

International first-year students must submit one of the following English language proficiency exams.

TOEFL IBT Home Edition ( will no longer be accepted from February 1st )–students who have taken/scheduled the test before may be subject for alternative English language test requirements–we apologize for the inconvenience.

  • IELTS or IELTS Indicator 
  • PTE Academic 
  • ITEP Academic Plus 
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced or Cambridge C2 Proficiency 

Students do not need to submit English-language proficiency if they meet one of the following exemptions.

  • English is your native language.
  • You have completed, at the time of application, three or more years in a curriculum where English was the sole language of instruction.

Submitting letters of recommendation is optional.

If you submit letters of recommendation, please request letters from individuals, such as a high school teacher or advisor, who can speak to your academic abilities and accomplishments. Please send no more than two letters to  [email protected]  or through the Common Application.

If you are applying to one of these schools, you may be required to submit additional supporting information such as an audition, interview or portfolio. Please check the requirements of your major with the school or college below.

  • Boyer College of Music and Dance  
  • Tyler School of Art and Architecture

For schools and colleges with such requirements, you may schedule your audition and submit your portfolio for review prior to completing the submission of your application.

4. Check the status of your application with TUportal and determine if you need a student visa.

All decisions made regarding your application will be available to you via  TUportal . It’s the gateway to the rest of the application process, so make sure to keep your accessnet username and password handy. After submitting your application, you can  track its status  and learn important next steps in TUportal.

If you’re admitted, you may need to obtain a nonimmigrant student visa —including a student (F-1) or an exchange visitor (J-1) visa —as a next step toward your enrollment at Temple.  Learn how to obtain your I-20 or DS-2019 from Temple and apply for an F-1 or J-1 visa .

5. Submit proof of secondary school graduation.

If you are admitted to Temple and you have submitted your enrollment deposit, you must have your secondary school send your final transcript or proof of graduation to Temple.

Advanced Credit Policy

Temple’s generous policy accepts advanced credits as determined by the examining body. If you have successfully completed IB, A Level, AP or CLEP courses/subjects,  learn more about our policy .

 When to Apply 

International applications are reviewed on a rolling basis for each semester. The sooner you submit your application, the sooner you will receive a decision.

Application Deadlines

Apply earlier to get an admissions decision earlier. If you apply by Nov. 1 , you’ll receive an admissions decision by Jan. 10, though using Early Action is not binding.

Why apply early? 

  • We generally admit students at a higher rate who apply Early Action. 
  • On-campus housing is guaranteed if you commit to Temple by May 1 , though the selection is first come, first served. So, the sooner you get your decision, the sooner you can plan your housing. 
  • You’ll be able to sign up for Orientation sooner, which is when you register for classes.

Apply by July 15  for a fall semester start and you’ll receive an admissions decision in four to eight weeks after an application is “complete” in our system. 

The decision deadline for admitted students is  May 1 .

NOTE : the Nursing program application deadline has not been extended.

NOTE : Early Action candidates receive priority review and can delay our review of Regular Decision candidates. During peak admissions (October through March), it might take more than eight weeks for a decision to be made on your application.

Apply by  Nov. 1  for a spring semester start.

The decision deadline for admitted students is two weeks after receiving an offer of admission . 

For first-year students, there is no separate application required to be considered for the Honors Program. Early Action and Regular Decision applicants are automatically reviewed.

 Costs, Aid and Scholarships 

Temple offers a range of financial support for our international students, from merit scholarships to other awards recognizing high-achieving students, such as the #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship.

 Conditional Admission Program 

Academically qualified students with low or no language scores may still be accepted to Temple University through our Conditional Admission Program (CAP). This program provides English language classes while orienting students to university life and preparing them for success at Temple University. Students at the highest CAP levels take credit-bearing classes so they can begin working toward their degree even while learning English.  Learn more about our Conditional Admission Program for international students .

 Study Abroad Entry Year Programs 

Another option to consider when applying to Temple is starting your degree at our campuses in either Rome, Italy or Tokyo, Japan. Through the Temple Rome and Temple Japan Entry Year programs, you can spend your first year at Temple University Rome or Japan and then complete your studies at Main Campus in Philadelphia. The Temple Rome and Japan Entry Year programs offer an American university education with a global foundation.
