Mother Tongue Teaching at the University of KwaZulu-Natal: Opportunities and Threats
The paper presents my experiences of teaching Life Skills using isiZulu as the Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT) to Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) students, who were specializing in the Foundation Phase (FP) in 2008 and 2009 at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The aim of the article is to reflect on the opportunities and threats encountered during the implementation process with these two cohorts. During contact sessions, new experiences were recorded and were then analysed and two categories were formed. Under each category themes were developed and experiences were distributed accordingly. The findings demonstrate the opportunities such as increase in vocabulary, good performance and high students’ involvement in class activities. The study indicated time constraints, shortage of expertise and negative attitudes as the threats of using isiZulu as LoLT in higher education. The study also suggests recommendations that would strengthen the initiative.

The article aims to depict how needs analysis has informed the curriculum design of the discipline specific language courses in Nursing and Psychology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). It will also demonstrate how isiZulu has been taught as a second language for professional purposes. The article is an outcome of the initiative of the multilingualism project formally known as the South Africa Norwegian Tertiary Education Development Programme (SANTED). SANTED is a joint venture of the Norwegian Agency for Development Co-operation (NORAD), the Department of Education and several South African Higher Education Institutions. The authors argue that there is a link between language as a resource orientation and the need for UKZN graduates in professional programmes to have communicative competence in isiZulu language. According to the language as a resource orientation which is derived from language ecology, languages are a resource that should be managed, developed, and conserv...

This research paper looks into a long-timed debated topic of medium of instruction in education in Pakistan. Voluminous research has been undertaken in favor of mother tongue based education due to its effectiveness in imparting knowledge and enhancing learning. In the similar vein, the teachers of the research site found it ironical to teach mother tongue only as a subject, while all science subjects were taught in English. Likewise, the students did not encourage the abrupt shift of medium of instructions from local language to English even at the higher secondary education. It posed a challenge for both the teachers and students in accomplishment of their respective objectives. Moreover, in such scenario, it was less likely to get considerable result in understanding of scientific concepts and improved learning. The teachers did not deny the importance of English in the current time,s yet suggested mother tongue to be the medium of instructions. They also pointed out dearth of books and scant teaching trainings in local language .Also, English as an imposed medium of instructions were some of the factors that discouraged to teach in mother tongue. Moreover, students believed that if the medium of instruction was the mother tongue, there were lesser chances of cheating in examination. The research site was a college, situated in a rural setting. The tool for research were the semi-structured interviews of teachers and students. This article may raise the voice of all the stakeholders of teaching-learning process, so that the education policy makers may consider their opinion for the betterment of the education system in future.

This article seeks to discuss issues associated with the inconspicuousness of isiZulu as an indigenous African language in the South African education system as established during empirical research conducted by the author for his PhD thesis. The research revealed that the integration of isiZulu into information and communication technology (ICT) in the basic education sector in KwaZulu-Natal is very slow, and yet it could positively fast-track the elevation and promotion of this language as medium of instruction. Despite numerous attempts by the democratic government to elevate the status of the African languages, they are still not seriously considered in the education sector. Institutions of learning have developed multilingual language policies, yet their implementation remains a major problem and a pipe dream for a majority of South Africans. Based on a critical review of the literature on African languages and ICT, the article highlights various opportunities, benefits and challenges that are associated with the integration of indigenous African languages into ICT in the education sector. The article concludes with a discussion of some linguistic challenges that are responsible for the continued low profile of indigenous languages in education and for the high failure rate in South African schools.

Dysregulation of inflammatory and immune responses has been implicated in the pathogenesis of heart failure (HF). But even if inflammation is a prerequisite for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), little is known about HF risk in IBD.
In this Swedish nationwide cohort, patients with biopsy-confirmed IBD were identified between 1969 and 2017 [n = 81,749, Crohn’s disease (CD, n = 24,303), ulcerative colitis (UC, n = 45,709), and IBD-unclassified (IBD-U, n = 11,737)]. Each patient was matched with up to five general population reference individuals (n = 382,190) and IBD-free full siblings (n = 95,239) and followed until 31 December 2019. Flexible parametric survival models estimated the adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) and standardized cumulative incidence for HF, with 95% confidence intervals (CI).
There were 5,582 incident HF identified in IBD patients (incidence rate [IR]: 50.3/10,000 person-years) and 20,343 in reference individuals (IR: 37.9) during a median follow-up of 12.4 years. IBD patients had a higher risk of HF than reference individuals (aHR 1.19, 95% CI 1.15 to 1.23). This increased risk remained significant ≥20 years after IBD diagnosis, leading to one extra HF case per 130 IBD patients until then. The increased risk was also observed across IBD subtypes: CD (IR: 46.9 vs. 34.4; aHR 1.28 [1.20 to 1.36]), UC (IR: 50.1 vs. 39.7; aHR 1.14 [1.09 to 1.19]), and IBD-U (IR: 60.9 vs. 39.0; aHR 1.28 [1.16 to 1.42]). Sibling-controlled analyses showed slightly attenuated association (IBD: aHR 1.10 [1.03 to 1.19]).
Patients with IBD had a moderately higher risk of developing HF for ≥20 years after IBD diagnosis than the general population.
