The traditional process of human communication has always involved a certain degree of direct personal interaction between individuals yet with the introduction of new technology preferred methods of communication have become more impersonal resulting in an increasingly isolationist society.

As technology improves methods of communication have steadily become more convenient wherein people are no longer limited in their ability contact one another but rather can choose from a plethora of choices.

The creation of mobile phone technology has enabled people to be contacted at anywhere at anytime through either a direct phone conversation or a more discreet text message. Online methods of communication such as email, chat messengers or even online video conferencing services such as those on Skype have made it so that global methods of communication have become far easier and affordable compared to the situation two decades ago where international communication was an arduous affair often involving significant delays, costs or even an inability to be contacted due to ones location.

It was through the greater interconnectivity of countries through globalization that communication similarly became more globalized thus making it more convenient for the average user. Despite the current ease of use most people have with utilizing an assortment of methods of communication, as of late the most popular methods of communication such as texting, email and chat messengers have actually promoted a culture of isolation (Reid, 423 – 435).

This is due to the fact that as these popular methods of communication become the norm so to does the level of social isolation of its users increase due the lack of direct face to face communication (Gordon, 60). As such, this brings up the question if it is possible to become more isolated due to the use of popular methods of communication despite the greater level of communicative interconnectivity that technology has brought about, and if so what are its negative consequences?

Direct face to face interaction in order to communicate ideas and gain insight has been replaced with the convenience and rapidity brought about by the today’s popular methods of communication. With the loss of direct interaction comes a growing trend of isolation wherein people prefer being able to communicate with each other through short rapid fire messages rather than the long eloquent styles often seen in face to face interactions (Denial of Isolation, 10).

As a result, emotional cues and responses usually evident in most direct conversations are absent resulting in more individuals becoming isolated both emotionally and socially from the world around them due to the lack of interaction (Cole and Cole, 40).

It is due to these factors that there has been an increase in social awkwardness among young adults who have become so used to popular methods of communication that when placed in an instance of direct social interaction they tend to stumble around the conversation because of a certain lack of practice in direct communication.

It is due to instances such as these that certain individuals have begun to prefer technologically based methods of communication since they are able to avoid problems related to their inability to properly communicate and socialize in public. This in turns continues to promote the trend of social isolation resulting in possible problems later on in life for individuals who experience this apparent “side-effect” of modern day communication.

In his book “The Shallows”, Nicholas Carr presents readers with the notion that the traditional method of reading books, essays and various other written works are superior to what is offered today on the internet (Carr, 3). For Carr, the internet is a medium based on the concept of interruption where multitasking and rapid fire reading is the norm rather than curious oddities.

Reading short articles, responding to emails and chatting at the same time has become so ubiquitous with internet usage that most people barely give it a second thought. On the other hand, as Carr explains, this has resulted in people losing the ability to enter into a slow, contemplative method of thinking normally associated with reading novels in print (Carr, 14).

A crowding out effect can be seen where people find it harder to concentrate on lengthy articles, books or essays and a growing preference has developed for short rapid fire articles which can be browsed within a few minutes. It must be noted that with the development of the internet people have in effect become able to communicate their ideas to an audience through a massive scale.

Blogs, internet article sites and various other online means of posting ideas have become so ubiquitous with modern day society that it is hard to imagine our current culture without the various articles we read on a daily basis which are a form of communication between a writer and reader in which the ideas they have regarding sports, politics and society in general are relayed to us on a daily basis.

While the internet on any given day produces hundreds of thousands of pages of content, easily rivaling and surpassing the traditional publishing world in the amount of material produced however most of what is actually created is of poor literary quality, incomparable to what is written by professional writers and scholars.

Such a case is similar to the observation made by novelist Harvey Swales in 1951 during the rise in popularity of the paperback novel in which he stated that it could be the start of either an increase in the value of produced material or the inundation of trashy literature into an already polluted ocean of books and novels.

As such it can be said that the traditional method of communicating ideas through journals, books and various other forms of printed media have steadily been replaced in popularity through an apparent flood of literature that does not even reach the same literary heights. For Carr the perceived value of the internet is one of human deterioration where people lose the ability for solitary single minded concentration in favor of rapid fire multitasking due to the proliferation of articles that can be easily consumed and read (Carr, 8).

It must be noted that Clay Shirky in his book “Cognitive Surplus” states that the internet has provided people with a platform in which to collaborate, communicate, experiment and as a result create effective social change through various collaborative works (Shirky, 5 – 10).

For Shirky it is this ability to interact and create rather than remain a static passive observer that makes the internet a positive force towards the buildup of social and cultural development. In the eyes of Shirky, the internet acts as an open platform for contribution where user driven content and collaboration drives social and cultural development (Shirky, 11).

Collaborative efforts such as Wikipedia, Wiki’s and social networking sites such as blogs, twitter and online message boards all contribute to utilizing the aptly named cognitive surplus towards creating an ever increasing amount of user driven content that contributes towards societal development.

While Shirky does indicate that not all content is productive such as the internet meme “lolcats” the fact remains that people are actually doing something rather than remaining static that signals a progressive change towards dynamic social interaction (Ruberg 33).

Online projects such as Wikipedia, Project Guttenburg, Ushahidi and various other online drivers of collaboration help to improve the accessibility of information and promotes drivers of interactivity resulting in greater amounts of user driven content.

As it was mentioned earlier, the indicator of progressive social and cultural change is dynamic contribution with the internet being the latest and best instrument to bring about such changes to human society (Drezner 31). The only problem facing the contributions made on the internet to act as triggers to create change in society is in their inherent value and the amount of control asserted on them.

On the other hand developments such as Wikipedia, Google Books, Project Guttenberg and various review sites have enabled users to contribute to the wealth of knowledge that the internet is known for further expanding the ability of individual users to gain access to all forms of information whether it be statistical, opinionated, encyclopedic or even a mere review.

Social networking sites such as Facebook, twitter and MySpace have helped to create collaborative online communities that can actually enact social change in the real world. The infamous online group Anonymous is famous for setting up the February 2008 protests against the church of scientology wherein literally thousands of people around the world protested outside various scientology establishments and churches.

The website Wikileaks has helped to encourage transparency in government operations and various other message boards have become spring boards for actually change in the way society has begun to operate on a global scale. Based on this it can be seen that true change is on the way for the internet, a true tool for societal collaboration to enact change on a global scale.

In light of the recent scandals involving corrupt public officials, self-serving politicians and criminal justice professionals who seem more in league with crime than justice what is needed is to create a set standard involving proper ethics and morality in order to preserve in the eyes of the public the necessary ethical standards people in such positions should have.

One standard that should be maintained is adherence to properly doing ones job, in various recorded cases it has been seen that various public officials and criminal justice professionals have in fact been slacking off with their duties resulting in the public wondering why such officials are in their positions in the first place.

While such actions are brought about by the tediousness of their jobs it must be noted that in such professions where the public is directly affected by ones actions slacking off is never an option due to the possible repercussions such actions may have on the general public good.

Another necessary standard is the need to preserve the integrity of one’s position despite outside influences in the form of cash bribes or other forms of altering one’s decisions. A position in a public office entails that need to prioritize equality amongst the people rather than focus on a particular group due to a self-serving attitude. It is only when public officials start to serve their own causes rather than that of the people that problems in the system occur.

Based on this it is important to maintain a certain degree of impartiality in order to maintain an effective public system that ensures all individuals are treated fairly and equally. On a relatively minor note, in such cases involving necessary standards for potential criminal justice professionals and public sector officials what is needed is to properly integrate standards in the production of literature or text in order to ensure its professionalism while at the same time using current practices in information dissemination in order to get the information to the general public.

It must be noted that no matter how professional a document looks it is absolutely useless if the information within it is not seen by general public. For criminal justice professionals and public sector officials maintaining their professionalism in light of the recent trends in trashy online communication is important however what must be taken into consideration is properly informing the public about information garnered by their profession so that the public can be well educated and can make informed decisions.

Meaning of Communication

Communication is essential for all of us, whether humans or animals. Communication is a part of written and spoken language, and altogether it completes the communication process. Both use different languages to communicate because it’s hard to survive in this world without communication.

Good communication skills are all about exchanging ideas and thoughts to convey information. It is a two-way conversation that includes vocalisation as well as a gesture. • Listen patiently: Listen patiently when someone tries to make a healthy conversation. It is one of the ways to do effective communication, as it gives a clear understanding of what the person is trying to say.
• View your body language: Body language speaks about your personality. Some people make uncomfortable gestures through their body language. So, you should keep your body language friendly and warm rather than keeping it arrogant.
• Do not go over your point: Communication is all about expressing thoughts so that the other person can understand. It is not that you are trying to prove something correct and the other person incorrect. Some people try to win the conservation, which leads to struggles and arguments.
• Watch your words: Before telling someone something, make sure you know what you are saying. We often say things that we should not do out of anger or anxiety. Remember, once spoken, words can not be withdrawn. Thus, it is suggested that you do not say something that you can regret later.
• Practice: If there is a professional meeting where you need to communicate about your product or work, it is recommended to practise already. Practise in front of the mirror or with a friend only. Choose how your conversation will begin, all the points you cover, and how you will end it.

As many people may feel comfortable communicating, communication is an art developed through practice and evaluation; every good communicator passes through a process to learn communication and practice skills, review themselves, and decrease where they can be.

This Communication Technology Essay is about how relationships have been impacted. This is the question:

Nowadays, the way many people interact with each other has changed because of technology. 

In what ways has technology affected the types of relationships people make? 

Is this a positive or negative development?

Understanding the Task

You should be able to see that there are two parts that need to be answered:

The first part is about general effects and the second part is asking for your opinion about this. 

So it doesn't easily fit into an essay 'type'.

Don't worry about this. If you have learned to recognize different types of essay but you find one that does not seem to fit any, just focus on working out exactly what you are being asked. 

So in this one you have to brainstorm some ideas about the way relationships have changed. 

Stating your Opinion

For the second part you need to decide if it is positive or negative, or both. 

Choosing one side and writing about it is probably the simplest way to approach it. In other words:

• Body 1: The way relationships have changed
• Body 2: The negative impacts (or positive)

Although it says ' positive or negative ', it's YOUR opinion, so if you decide it is both it is fine to say this as long as you  make it clear . 

In this model Communication Technology Essay, the writer has stated that it is both positive and negative.

• Body 1: The way relationships have changed (positive)
• Body 2: The negative impacts

When you take a look at the model answer, you'll see the writer has discussed the new types of relationships and labelled them as positive, but then gone on to look at the negative sides.

There are usually several ways you can approach and organize an essay, not just one. As long as it is coherent and answers the question, that is fine.

It is evident that technology has transformed the ways of communication and influenced relationships in a variety of ways. In my opinion, there are both positive and negative effects of this.

The principal way in which relationships have been affected is that they tend to be at a distance rather than face-to-face. The advent of the internet has made it easy for business owners to communicate across the world, with remote job opportunities one call away. Online educational programs are available for people residing in different countries, and it is no longer a dream to attend live classes from the comfortable environment of a home. Not only this, the social platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have revolutionized relationships, be it making online friendships with people from other countries or staying in touch with loved ones. Based on this perspective, technology has influenced relationships in a positive way. 

However, despite these advances, the quality of interaction has significantly declined in several respects. If people are developing most of their relationships online, this means that they may also have less fact-to-face contact. This kind of contact on a personal level is important for human beings to feel wanted and a part of society. This may be a particular problem for children's social development as they used to be seen playing out on the streets but are now too often indoors. Technology can also mean people are detached from what is going on around them even when they are out, as can be seen by the many people staring into their mobile phones as they travel or walk around. 

In conclusion, technology has brought some positive development in the ways people interact with each other. However, there are also some negative impacts of technology on the types of relationships people make.

It fully answers the question, setting out the way the types of relationships people make have changed (they tend to be ' online ') and then expanding on this by giving examples. 

A balanced opinion is also clearly explained, with the impacts in the first body paragraph seen to be positive, and the second body paragraph dedicated to explaining the negative points.

The essay is also clearly organised and coherent, with the opinion clearly stated and the body paragraphs clearly each focused on one central idea.

There is also good vocabulary used and good collocations. For example:

Technology has changed every aspect of human life. It has changed the way how people communicate with their family and friends. The process of growth in technology and communication have been observed in a parallel way and technological inventions like internet, mobile phones, social media has helped the communication in entering into the next level. This paper intends to discuss the way how technology has influenced the way of communication in modern times.

It is not that difficult to assess the importance of technology in the communication sector and the scene were completely different only twenty or thirty years ago. People used to meet face to face for communicating with each other. Telephones were used for emergency calls and telegrams were commonly used by the people. Today these are things of the past and people have left these mediums behind (Turkle, 2012). Youngsters cannot even imagine how people used to live without internet and cell phones.

After the advent of the internet, cell phones and several other technological devices, the way of communication is completely changed. Today, people have internet that provides them access to the whole world for a user in less than a second. Internet is the most convenient and effective medium to receive as well as send any material into any parts of the world. E-Mails are used in order to communicate instead of telegrams and these mails can be sent to any place of the world within seconds (Turkle, 2012).

After the arrival of internet, next was the arrival of social networking sites like Facebook, twitter and mobile applications like Whats app. These devices took us into a new zone where people communicate to each other in a convenient and effective manner. Today people do not feel loneliness because of these mediums of communication. Everybody stays in constant touch with friends and family with the help of these communication mediums (Turkle, 2012). Technology has caused Solitude among the youngsters because they excessively rely on these modern mediums of communication.

Modern communication technology has given people the option of being solitude. They can utilise their time according to them. being solitude becomes important sometimes, and modern technology has made it possible for users. Solitude allows an individual to do something remarkable in is life. On the other hand, one aspect of this modernisation of communication technology is the loneliness among people. Today people prefer to remain busy with these modern communication mediums and they do not get time to socialize with their friends regularly (Turkle, 2012)

It has been observed that excessive use of communication mediums makes people isolated and insecure in some cases. Such cases take place when people start relying on these communication devices excessively. People become so involved in these technological devices that they create some kind of space of their own where nobody else is there to accompany them. Such cases are injurious, and people become insecure when they face real life. Technology should be used for making life convenient, and it should not be allowed to domiate one’s life in any case. Technology has affected the way of communication in a significant way, and a lot depends on how people use the same.

People are so habituated of using these communication mediums that they cannot even imagine sustaining without using these mediums. Kids are used to play video games, and they prefer these games over physical activities. People are habituated of using social networking sites, mobile applications, and it is not possible for them to stay away from these sites for even a day. Communication is probably one of most significant part of modern life as it affects every aspect of today’s life (Turkle, 2012).

It has been observed that people do not feel comfortable when they are not in possession of these communication devices. Today, people cannot imagine leaving their place without having their cell phones, tablets or other communication devices that they use for communicating. It has been observed that technology has helped people in several instances. Girls find cell phones as their best friends, and they can easily get the help of police in case of need (Turkle, 2012). Cell phones and internet empower people by providing them relevant information. Information is one of the strongest medium that empowers people and lets them decide what is wrong and what they should do.

I have also observed that I cannot afford to live without my cell phone and cannot live without any internet connection. The communication devices keep me connected with the world by providing the latest information. I prefer to stay in touch of internet for the latest news and stock movements. Staying online enables me to stay in touch with my friends who keep updating me about various movements of my college and also provide latest relevant information. The internet connection in my tablet is one of most essential requirements of my daily life. Social networking sites, as well as mobile applications, are essential part of my life that empowers me in several ways.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) has an entire portion dedicated to the speaking and in one of the speaking parts, there is an activity where a cue card is provided to the candidate and one is asked to speak on a topic continuously for two to three minutes. Every student must write a comprehensive and explanatory answer that explains every aspect of the question.

In the present scenario, the question requires the student to discuss and elaborate upon the modern forms of communication. Their answer must cover the following points:

• List down some essential and modern forms of communication
• Are these modes of communication a boon or bane for the people?
• Navigating a balance between the in-person and virtual communication modes
• The concluding opinion

Discuss whether you are in favor of or against the prevalence of modern forms of communication: question 1, what do you prefer- connecting on social media or talking in person: question 2, frequently asked questions, important ielts exam resources.

The modern world has evolved over the years due to the progress made in the field of technology. Communicating with your loved ones in a world like this shouldn't be difficult. Thanks to the  modern forms of communication like messaging and video calling, you can now stay in close touch with your clan. 

People from the older generation are often found not favoring these advancements. They believe that newer modes of communication have eradicated the possibility of one-on-one discussions. Mechanizing the process of connecting with someone has erased the presence of human feelings. It is very difficult to understand the tone and emotion through mere texts.

However, I believe that having access to each other via texts, calls, and video chats has made the world more compact. Today, I can talk to a friend that may be sitting miles away. It has allowed more human bonds to forge and relationships to not fall apart due to a lack of communication, especially in a pandemic. 

With that said, I also understand the value of human touch or being physically around the people you love. Finding this balance between the two is essential.

So, talk to people around you, in your college or office. Reach out to them, exchange your views, celebrate with them, laugh with them, and share your sorrows. Nothing beats having someone around physically. If that's not possible, you can always call and text to fill the void. In my opinion, these communication modes are a boon if used properly.

As the world moves forward, the ways of our communication have evolved. There was a time when we were young and would meet up with our friends in the colony playground every evening. That was how we stayed in the loop with each other's life. Today, that connection is replaced by watching each other's posts on social media platforms. 

The  modern forms of communication like texts, calls, emails, and social media have brought the people in our lives closer. Those who live miles away feel next to us when you video call. Technology has allowed us to never lose touch with people we love. Hence, it’s a boon, in my opinion. 

With that said, sometimes the line gets blurry. People cancel meeting each other only to watch their friends have fun on the social media posts later. We live more in the curated reality present virtually rather than what we have in the present. This can be dangerous if we lose touch with our lives and those around us. 

Virtual connections are a suitable replacement only when there is no choice but to use them more, as in a pandemic or if you cannot leave your house owing to having been sick or similar exceptions. Otherwise, if you do have the access, then going over to meet someone in-person, having a quick chat, a hug, and a shared goodbye is always more meaningful. 

So, if I had to pick one mode of communication over the other, I'd choose to be around someone physically unless faced with an event that renders me incapable.

How have the modes of communication evolved?

Ten to fifteen years back, the primary mode of communication was going to someone's house, sitting in their living room while sharing a hot cup of tea as you talk. The idea sounds so simple and lovely. Yet, today, it's no more standard practice. Today, a person has to first call or text another person, make small talk, ask where they are, and then perhaps, make plans to meet each other. The modes of communication have evolved and have made us more distant as much as they have made reaching out more accessible. It's truly ironic.

In the face of modern communication channels, has writing letters lost its meaning?

Letter writing was a primary practice that was prevalent before the advent of technology. People from our parents' generation often wrote letters to each other, giving details of their day and life. Writing down how you feel and sending it to someone close was a personalized act. Texting, on the other hand, lacks the same effect.
