Writing a Federal Resume

Is your resume one page? That’s fine for a private sector job. Your government resume, however, will need to have more detail, and it’s likely to grow to about two to five pages.

Key Components of a Federal Resume

The best way to create a federal resume is to use the resume builder on the federal government’s jobs website, USAJOBS. The resume builder will guide you through the whole process. And you don’t have to stick with one. You can create a resume tailored to fit different positions you apply for. You can also create a searchable, master resume, so HR specialists can contact you if there’s an opportunity that fits your skills and experience.

Building a Federal Resume

Candidate Information A federal resume will ask your citizenship status and most, but not all, positions require you to be a U.S. citizen. You’re also asked if you’ve worked for the federal government before and if you qualify for veterans preference —that is, you’ve served on active duty in the Armed Forces.

Work experience Your resume should list all the relevant jobs you’ve held.

Required : Employer, location, title, start and end date, average hours worked per week, responsibilities and accomplishments for each job you list.

Optional : A supervisor(s) as a reference and salary, although not listing salary doesn’t exclude resumes from consideration.

Education Include information on the schools you attended and the relevant coursework you completed. Only list degrees from accredited schools, or programs that meet the Office of Personnel Management’s standards . Provide as much information as possible to support your case that you’re the best person for the job.

Required : Schools attended and degrees obtained.

Optional : Grade-point averages, relevant coursework, academic papers or projects, key presentations, honors received, other important accomplishments.

Optional Information

For the best shot at a position, provide as much pertinent information as possible in optional sections, including:

Job–related training

This could include classes, seminars, coursework, certifications or training that relates to the skills and experience the position requires.

References

Consider listing professional or personal references who can vouch for your character, work ethic and dependability—such as colleagues, classmates and mentors.

Language skills

Include the languages you have experience in, and your level of proficiency.

Affiliations

Use this to list professional associations, societies, clubs or other organizations you belong to and to highlight leadership roles and volunteer experiences you’ve had that relate to the position description.

Professional publications

If you’ve been published, include the outlets you’ve contributed to, the publication names and the date your submissions were published.

Additional information

You can add other relevant information, including awards, leadership activities, public speaking engagements or volunteer experience. You can also add your availability, the type of work environment you seek and your desired location. Even if your interests and desires don’t match the position’s needs, your resume will stay in the running.

resume service public

Do you want to create a convincing resume that will give you an advantage in your application for an opening at the state or local government? You are in luck! All you need to know lies in this ultimate guide. Keep reading!

If you are interested in applying for a vacant position at the state or local government and you want to get off on the right foot, you need to prepare your resume. However,  just any resume won’t cut it. You need to submit a top-notch and professional resume — one that contains the much-needed information and meets the basic requirements.

You see, this is your chance to show your unique attributes as a professional and what makes you the ideal fit for the position. So, your resume has to be top-drawer and highly persuasive.

That said, if you are probably wondering what you need for an effective resume or CV writing, don’t worry. We have got you covered.

In this article, we will show you the guidelines for writing a resume and how to go about it — even if you are just doing a resume for the first time.

Let’s get started!

Where Do You Start?

As they say, “everything that has a beginning has an ending.” You stand a good chance of having a beautiful ending if you do the right thing at the beginning. This leads to the question: “ Where Do You Start? ”

Before creating your resume, ensure you take time out to read the job description. This will help you determine how well you fit into the vacant government role. Every state or local government has specific requirements and goals they expect their potential employees to meet. Therefore, you need to know what they are looking for.

Once you confirm that you are an excellent fit, that means one thing — it is time to create your resume. Now that you already know what is required, you can tailor your resume to show how best suited you are to the available position.

But before you attempt to make your resume, you need to know that there is a specific format and style attached to this kind of resume.

Is this your first time creating a resume? Or have you previously written resumes that didn’t get you the government job you wanted? Whatever the case may be, you can rest assured that you will find a solution in this article.

We will show you all the details you need to include when putting a resume together in a bit. Read on!

What is a government resume.

Remember, we stressed earlier that government resumes require a slightly different approach. This is where we tell you why. No better way to start than explaining what a government resume is.

Let’s get right into it!

A government resume is simply one of the important documents you must submit when applying for a particular government job. Although writing a government resume is similar to the regular resume in many ways, you shouldn’t use them interchangeably. In other words, do not use a regular resume when applying for a government position.

If you have been submitting a regular resume instead of a government resume, you have missed a trick. It’s possibly the reason you have not gotten your dream government job.

So, what differentiates a government resume from a regular resume?

We have the details explained below.

Differences Between A Government and Regular Resume

  • The Details
  • Keywords Placement
  • Resume Formatting
  • Resume Length

The Details: This is one of the main reasons why using a regular resume instead of a government resume isn’t a good idea. The details required in both resumes differ in some ways. In a regular resume, you can explain your assignments in a specific position. For instance, if you are an accountant, you can emphasize the duties you carry out on a daily basis.

However, with government resumes, the tables turn differently. In this case, facts are more effective. This means that using numbers works best.

For example, if you were given a task to lead a project, mention how many people worked under you. Also, you can state the number of commendations and awards you have gotten for your performance and consistency. This is how it works with government resumes.

Keywords Placement: Your utilization of keywords when writing your resume should not be overlooked. This is because government and regular resumes require different keyword placement. If you are writing a government resume, ensure you use many keywords and place most of those keywords in your introductory paragraphs.

Conversely, when putting together your regular resume, do not spread the keywords. Instead, place them in strategic positions, such as the front of a key paragraph or section. Additionally, make sure all the keywords you use are capitalized, so that they are easy to notice.

Resume Formatting: The formatting involved in both resumes couldn’t be more different. When writing a regular resume, you need to convey your information as fast as you possibly can. This is why it is highly recommended that you use short bullet points, as they make your resume appealing and easy to read.

On the other hand, you need to provide more information when writing a government resume. In this scenario, the best approach is the utilization of paragraphs containing at least 4 sentences. Paragraphs allow you to express and show why you are the ideal fit for a position.

Resume Length: A regular resume is usually short, as it involves summarizing the attributes that make you ideal for a vacant role. Contrarily, government resumes are lengthy, time-consuming, and stressful. Nonetheless, they give you a better chance of explaining why you should be considered for the government job.

Use A Resume Builder

Are you making your first resume and don’t know how to go about it? Or are you tired of writing resumes that don’t yield the result you desire? How would you feel if we told you that you could get a high-quality resume without having to go through the stress of writing one from scratch?

Here’s the thing, if you don’t know how to write an appealing resume, you can use a resume builder.

But, what’s a Resume Builder?

A resume builder is an online tool that provides you with ready-made and easy-to-use job resumes layout and templates. One of the best online resume builders out there is Resumist , as it allows you to create professional, effective, and eye-catching resumes that will give you a better chance of getting your dream job. The best part is, it is fast and you get to access it for free.

So, if you need help with your resume, here is how Resumist works:

What To Include In A Government Resume

  • Contact Information
  • Work Experience
  • Volunteer Work
  • Accomplishments

Contact Information: For easy identification, you should include contact information, such as your email address, telephone number, postal address, and full name.

Education: Here, you are expected to provide information about the schools you have attended, the certifications, degrees you have earned, and other details like:

  • The years you attended a particular school
  • The sum of credit hours you earned
  • The dates you completed your schooling
  • The awards or recognition you got in different schools
  • Your educational organization membership status
  • Important papers, presentations, projects, and course works that you completed

Work Experience: When writing a government resume, you should give a well-detailed account of your experience working for different companies over the years. And based on experts’ comments, you should start the body of your government resume with your experience as a professional.

Here is what you need to give a well-detailed account of your work experience:

  • Your job title
  • The name of your present or previous employers and their location
  • When you started working at a company and when you ended
  • The average number of hours you worked weekly
  • A comprehensive explanation of your day-to-day responsibilities
  • Your supervisor’s name and contact information

Volunteer Work: If you have done any volunteer work previously that relates to the government job you are applying for, feel free to include it. It might be what tilts the odds in your favor.

Accomplishments : What did you accomplish in your previous or present job? How did you help your company achieve its set goals? These are the types of information you should include. It gives you an advantage.

For instance, you can mention how you helped the company to manage, save, or earn money. Or how you helped the company close a big deal. Remember to use numbers when inserting details about your accomplishments. Numbers work wonders when it comes to government resumes.

Here is an example of how to use numbers to show your accomplishment:

  • Exceeded the company’s financial goal expectation for the month by 10%
  • Helped the company acquire 20% in profits

With the aid of the resume best practices we have shared so far, you can now confidently make your first resume or correct the errors in your previous ones. So, go for gold!

Public Service Resume Guidance

  • The Big Picture
  • Nuts and Bolts
  • Section by Section
  • Templates and Samples
  • Additional Resources

1. The Big Picture

Use Microsoft Word for all your application documents. MS Word (and not Pages, Google Docs, or any other word processing program) is what you will overwhelmingly—if not exclusively—use at a law office. Create an MS Word resume, save it, and continuously update it throughout law school.

Pro Tip: Send a PDF version of your resume with your applications so that you don’t accidentally send an edited/tracked version by mistake.

  • Formatting.  Use the  templates  and  sample resumes , and the  Resume Guidance - The Fine Points  below, to put your content into a UVA Law format. Why? In short, because over many thousands of student documents for many thousands of legal readers we have honed an approach that is most effective for most audiences. An initial resume review is often conducted by someone moving quickly through a high volume of documents to make swift yes/ no/ maybe evaluations.  In the first cut, you may get 30 seconds of review time.  So you want to make it  as easy as possible for a fast-moving reader to identify and understand your qualifications . Standing out from your peers because of inconsistent line spacing or unique fonts does not lead to more interviews or more offers. Stand out for your substance instead.
  • Strategy.  Use the space strategically. This is not an inventory. It is a  marketing brochure , and you have finite page space. Nothing should be on a resume without a reason. Every entry from Education to Interests should lead an interviewer to ask a question you want to answer.  See also  the private practice  how-to video on Resumes 101  and the public service  podcast on redesigning your resume . It is also  appropriate (and smart) to have different resumes for different situations . Consider a dual address header for employers in your home town or state, and/or include membership in relevant student organizations (e.g., Lonestar Lawyers, West Coast Wahoos) for applications in those geographies. As you gain more experience, you might have resumes showcasing different skillsets and/or practice areas— for example one that highlights direct client services and child advocacy and one that highlights employment law and governmental regulatory work.
  • Priorities.  You need to emphasize the things that are most important for the job you are seeking, not the things most important to you. Put another way, your mantra is “show how I can help  this  employer”.  Look for redundancy  – you don’t need seven bullets to show that you were a good student at your undergraduate school. Hit that point with your most compelling example or two and use the remaining real estate to demonstrate other desired skills. Also, experience bullets should  emphasize the most sophisticated and  transferrable skills  that you used in a job , even if those functions did not comprise the majority of your time. If you made coffee for eighty percent of your workday and wrote an in-depth memorandum for the remainder, your bullets will focus on those research and writing skills rather than the barista time. Finally, as you develop different resumes for different situations, the order of your experience bullets may change to emphasize different qualifications.
  • One Page.  One page is a must (for law students and junior attorneys). As you get more experience, you can capture  some  space via  formatting tweaks , but for most students, the time will come for tough cuts (see Strategy & Priorities, above!).
  • Experience.  Work experience is particularly valued by employers. If you came to law school directly from college, think about internships, student organizations, and any other positions you have held that required you to exercise  transferable skills —things like working to deadlines, writing, research, analysis, communication, and leadership. Any legal jobs (including  pro bono  work during school should receive prominent mention.
  • Current.  Think of your resume as a “living” document – whenever you send it to employers, it should  reflect your most recent (and relevant) achievements and experiences . If you have  accepted a 1L summer job, you should list it . You can add experience bullets beneath it after you have started work.
  • Details.  Proofread every time you make a change to your resume. Find someone with a great eye for detail and have that person read it, too.  Typos cost jobs .

2. Nuts and Bolts

Here are the  technical  building blocks for a good resume:

Pick one  to use for the entire resume. We like Times New Roman, Garamond, Book Antiqua, and other standard serif fonts that are  easy to read   and   professional—the twin goals of all resume formatting choices . Within reason (and when used consistently), you can use caps, small caps, bolding and italics to enhance readability and signal different types of information.

15 - 18 point for the name. 11 - 12 point for the main body and detail bullet text.  Something slightly smaller (9 or 10 point) for the address, phone and email can also work. If you have excessive/insufficient space, try changing fonts. Different fonts take up different amounts of space even at the same font size (e.g., the text in Book Antiqua size 12 takes up more space than the same exact text in Times New Roman size 12; Garamond is a great space saver!).

One page.  Period. In rare cases, student qualifications and the target job warrant attaching a second page of publications or technical achievements. If you feel that you have a special situation, speak to us.

Normally,  1 inch on the left, right, top and bottom margins.  If you need more space for text, .8 all around is acceptable.  Further reduction may allow more information, but it will hurt the presentation and readability. Remember: your reader is moving quickly. Cramming in additional content that makes all your achievements harder to read will not help you.  See also  the  how-to video on adjusting margins .

Line Spacing

Spacing is critical because it facilitates readability.  Adequate white space  between each entry lets the reader quickly digest your key facts. Blocks of text, on the other hand, strain the eye and encourage your fast-moving reviewer to simply move on.

Spacing is one of the main areas where we see errors in resumes—and if we can see it, you can bet a seasoned legal reviewer can too. You must have  consistent spacing throughout the document.

Pro Tip:   Instead of trying to insert blank lines between your entries using hard returns, keep the whole document single-spaced and  adjust spacing between sections and bullets using the point spacing function  (in Word, under the “Layout” tab “Paragraph” menu). This is less likely to result in formatting problems, particularly if you later adjust the font size.  See also  the  how-to video on adjusting line spacing like a pro .

Use at least  6 point spacing  between the last line of an entry and the heading of the next if possible. (If the heading of an entry is directly below a  horizontal drop line , you need to add an  extra 2 points of space between the horizontal line and the entry  to make the point spacing appear consistent with the rest of the document. So, if you are using 6 point spacing between entries, you should use 8 point spacing between a horizontal drop line and an entry.) If you are having trouble fitting everything on one page, talk to your counselor.

Within each entry,  0 to 2 point spacing between the bullets  works best for most fonts.

Indentation

Generally the individual entries are indented under the headings, and the detail bullets are indented under the individual entries. The  indentation should be the same for each level of indentation (normally 0.5 inch) , but that can be reduced if you need the space. ( See also  the  how-to video on adjusting indentations .) Again, large blocks of text impair readability: use indentation to keep white space and make it easy for your reader to see your accomplishments.

We strongly recommend  round bullets  (not squares, stars or other geometrical phenomena), with  one activity or skill per bullet  and  no sub-bullets . See below (in  Detail Bullets in Education Section  and  Detail Bullets in Experience Section ) for information on what to put in your bullets.

Consistency

Inconsistency looks like error , and employers do not want to hire careless attorneys. If you abbreviate  state names , make sure each state name is abbreviated on every entry. (Also, know the difference between state abbreviations (“Va.” and “D.C.”) and state postal codes (“VA” and “DC”), and use one or the other consistently throughout your document.) If you put a period after one abbreviation in your mailing address, you should put a period after all abbreviations in your address. The rule of consistency applies to everything on the page, from margins and indentation to punctuation and order of information.

With the exception of judges and a few public service employers, legal applications should be made electronically. If you are sending paper (or bringing a copy to your interview ), use either white or buff  medium-weight bond paper . Your resume, cover letter, and mailing envelope should match. You do not need to use bond paper for writing samples or transcripts.

3. Section by Section

The top of the resume.

Name, address, phone, email.  Non-negotiable. Pronouns are optional. Employers can and do contact candidates via  all those media, so you need a physical address where you can receive letters and a professional  voicemail  greeting for your listed phone number. ( See also private practice’s guidance on  phone calls with employers .) In a  single address header, use your   Charlottesville address . Where your home address provides a geographic connection to the employer, you can use a  dual address header  with Charlottesville on the left and home on the right. Use your  UVA Law email address  absent a compelling reason not to.

Check the accuracy of each listed contact method carefully.  People make mistakes on these every year, and it sometimes costs them a job.

For more information, see the  how-to video on your header  and/or the  how-to video on formatting your header .

Education Section – Overview

The Education section should be the  first section below your name and address . If you are looking for a way to make your resume stand out, moving the education section is generally not the right way. Employers expect it at the top while you are a law student.

List degrees in  reverse chronological order , beginning with your prospective law degree. It is a  “Juris Doctor” or “J.D.”  degree—not a “Juris Doctorate.” Either  abbreviate or spell out all of your degrees consistently  ( J.D.  and  B.A. , or  Juris Doctor  and  Bachelor of Arts ).

In general, you should list each school from which you have received a degree as a separate entry. Foreign study at a university that did not lead to a degree can be a bullet (under the school that gave academic credit) or a separate entry, as space allows. If you  transferred  schools in college, speak with us about how best to represent this on the page.

Detail Bullets in Education Section

Recall that your goal is to highlight skills and qualifications that  show how you can help  this  employer .

Generally speaking, the order of your bullets should be: academic achievements (awards, scholarships, etc.), journals and other academic extracurriculars, activities for which you hold leadership positions, activities in which you participate/are a member, study abroad experiences, and pro bono work.  But this order can (and should) change based on the employer and position to which you are applying.

Honors and awards:  These are generally listed first. You can use a  parenthetical or other description  to convey the significance of the achievement. Readers may not recognize the Fred E. Meadows Award from the University of Outer Continental Shelf. But if it means that you were named most outstanding student by your peers and professors, you should say that. Students in the Program for Law and Public Service should indicate they are a “Fellow” in the program.

Leadership Positions:  List activities in which you held a leadership position as “Organization Name, Position” (e.g., University Honor Society, Secretary). If you held more than one position, you might list them all or only the highest (“President”, rather than “President, Secretary”), depending on signaling goals and spacing considerations.

As you gain more experience in law school, you will make choices about whether to add them to the existing content or substitute for items that are not as relevant or compelling. Consider cutting items that are  redundant . You generally do not need multiple departmental honor societies to demonstrate academic achievement.

Other Desirable Characteristics:  Once you have established academic strength, your remaining bullets should be devoted to bringing out other  desirable characteristics, especially as they relate to your practice area interest(s)  (e.g., Mock Trial for prosecution or public defense or Immigration Law Society for immigration work), your  interpersonal and community engagement  (e.g., Asian Pacific American Law Students Association or Jewish Law Students Association), or your  geographic area of interest  (e.g., West Coast Wahoos for West Coast employers).

If you have no bullets for law school, it may be time to think about getting more involved.

Listing High Schools

High schools generally do not belong on legal resumes unless  the school in question provides a useful geographic tie or has a strong national- or area- reputation likely to appeal to the target audience. If listed, high schools should almost never have bullets.

Undergraduate GPA

For your  1L public service resume, your undergraduate GPA is optional . Rank is a more compelling data point for most, and recognitions like Phi Beta Kappa or magna cum laude are good ranking signals. For your 2L resume, if you choose to include your law school GPA (see more below), then also include your undergraduate GPA and vice-versa. Note: some employers, such as the federal government and national nonprofits, place a premium on grades so for those applications, include above average GPAs on your resume.

Law School GPA

UVA Law does not calculate official GPAs, except in limited circumstances pertaining to academic awards and clerkships. For federal government and some select public service employers, an unofficial GPA over 3.4 (mean) will generally be helpful to have on your resume. If you have questions about whether to include your GPA on your resume,  speak with a Public Service Center counselor.

If you decide to list your unofficial GPA, either include it next to your expected law school graduation date, formatted as “GPA: 3.54”, or make it the first bullet under your UVA Law entry if space permits. Round to, and include, two decimal places (for example, “3.499” becomes “3.50”; “3.678” becomes “3.68”). If you also list your undergraduate GPA (see above), present it in parallel format (see above re: the importance of  consistency ).

Experience Section – Overview

This is typically the second section under your header. For employers, this is a very important section.

List your experience in  reverse chronological order by end date . Highlight jobs that demonstrate relevant skills, like research and writing, analysis, organization, communication, as well as subject matter competency.

Many employers will focus on your law school  pro bono  and 1L summer experiences.  As you gain more legal experience (and once you have accepted your 1L summer job), update your resume to include new items.

If you  did not work in permanent positions before law school , then you can use clinics, law school/undergraduate internships, summer positions, work-study jobs or even undergraduate activities that were of long duration and high responsibility as experience. It is good to have at least two entries. If you are not sure whether or how to represent an internship or activity, check out the  how-to video on bulking up your resume  and/or the  podcast on redesigning your resume .

If you have  too many jobs , you will need to make  strategic choices  highlighting the most relevant and compelling to your target audience, without leaving gaps in time. If you are not sure how to approach this, see the  how-to video on trimming down your resume  and/or the  podcast on redesigning your resume . If you are having trouble, come talk to your public service counselor.

Pro Tip:  Once you have  accepted a 1L summer job, list the employer, position title, and future date range at the top of your Experience section . The date range will be the anticipated start and end dates of the position (formatted consistently with your other jobs’ date ranges).  You will not have bullets when you first add the job because you have not yet begun the work.  Do not guess. You will add detail bullets beneath it after you have started work.

Detail Bullets in Experience Section

Your experience section should be  strategically tailored to emphasize your most sophisticated and transferable skills for the job you are applying to.

Each bullet should carry  enough detail  to illustrate the strength that you are displaying. “Wrote memorandum on Virginia law” adds little. “Researched fair housing statutes and drafted memorandum analyzing landlord obligations to prospective tenants” adds more.

Use strong lead  action verbs  denoting your transferrable skills to describe what you did. Use active tense. (“Drafted portions of a memorandum” rather than “Assisted in drafting a memorandum”).

Describe jobs in  clear, lay terms . The more complex and technical the experience, the more important you describe it in language a non-specialist will understand. Clearly communicating difficult concepts is a key legal skill. If your resume can’t do it, employers will assume that you can’t, either.

It is hard work to find the right  balance between effective marketing and overselling . You do not want to overstate what you did. But it is critical that you do not understate your skills. If you are struggling with this, come speak with one of us.

As you determine practice areas of interest, your bullets will become more  targeted . For example, 3L students seeking jobs in prosecution or public defender offices will want to specify the trials, motions, and pleas they handled during their 2L summers and clinics (see the Public Service Center’s  sample resumes ). You also might develop  multiple resumes, each highlighting different skills (or listing detail bullets in a different order)  for different applications.

You  do not need to include bullets for   self-explanatory jobs  unless your role exhibited skills you want to highlight for the target position, or you are trying to bulk up your resume. For example, if, as a restaurant server, you were charged with supervising others or reconciling cash receipts, or you won an award for excellent client service, you might have a bullet highlighting those transferrable skills (management, detail orientation, client service). “Carried food to tables,” on the other hand, is not a good use of resume real estate.

As with all sections on your resume, the Experience section bullets should remain  current  to highlight your most compelling and relevant experiences.

For more on writing strong experience bullets, see the  how-to video on your detail bullets  and  on changing a 1L resume into a 2L resume  and the  podcast on redesigning your resume .

Pro Bono Service

Pro bono  service is a key supplement  to your summer legal internships, especially if you have limited work experience before law school. How detailed you are about each project depends on how much you have done and what you want that work to demonstrate. 3Ls with extensive public service experience do not need to detail every  pro bono  project. But 1Ls and many 2Ls should use  pro bono  projects to show depth and breadth—exposure to different practices and employers; work with real public service clients; commitment to a cause; geographic ties or flexibility.

Where your  pro bono  goes on the resume also can vary. A brief, less in-depth, or less compelling (relative to other things on your resume) experience can be  a bullet in the Education section  (e.g., Legal Aid Justice Center, winter break pro bono volunteer ). For an extensive or extended  pro bono  project, create an  entry in the Experience section .

“Interests,” “Languages” or “Personal”

It is relatively  common to see an Interests or Personal section on a legal resume . Like everything else on the page, use this section intentionally. While an Interests or Personal section should not displace good prior work experience, there are at least three strategic reasons to use one.

First, an Interests or Personal section can help  demonstrate desirable characteristics , ideally in conjunction with other points in the resume and cover letter. For example, “running marathons” can show you have grit and determination—key traits of lawyers. Language skills are another great credential for a Personal section and should often have their own “Languages” sub-header. (A word on languages: If you write that you are fluent, an employer will assume that it can conduct the interview in that language. This happens at least several times each year. “Proficient” is a safer choice unless you are truly fluent.)

Second, an Interests section may be used to  round out  the picture of your candidacy presented by the other sections. For example, a person with a strong technical background and a lot of individual research experience might list participation in a youth mentoring organization to show counseling and interpersonal skills.

Third, a shared interest can be a  conversation starter or point of connection  in an interview. If your interviewer also likes presidential biographies or indoor rock-climbing, discussing the hobby can make for more natural and pleasant conversation.

If you’re not convinced, see the  how-to video on your interests section , the  podcast on redesigning your resume , and Vault's  Why You Should Include Your Interests on Your Resume .

Pro Tips for Choosing Interests:

  • Stand in your reader’s shoes.  Step back and consider how your reader (a legal professional) is likely to view the interest, in isolation and in light of everything else on the resume. Does the interest contribute to the picture of a mature professional likely to succeed in a legal job?
  • Be genuine.  Do not list something you have not actually done or have done so rarely or so long ago that you cannot speak of it with genuine enthusiasm in an interview. For example, if you list “finding the best tacos in the city,” your answer should not be “Chipotle” (based on a true story). Remember that everything on your resume is an invitation to your interviewer to ask questions. To wit:
  • Have things to say.  Think about how you will discuss the interest in a way that does good work for you in the interview room. (See supra, tacos.) If you cannot come up with talking points (and ones that do not violate the tenets in these Pro Tips), consider a different interest.
  • Be specific.  Interests should be interesting, which generally means specific. So instead of, “Running, reading, and traveling”, you might have “Running adventure races, reading detective novels, and traveling in Central America”.
  • Have an exit strategy.  Especially if it’s extra-interesting (e.g., you starred in Broadway musicals before law school), practice how you will discuss and then move past the interest. A typical screening interview is 20 minutes long and you need to make sure your interviewer leaves with the impression you will have the skills and qualifications to be a great lawyer—not only that you once starred in Annie.

Describing Computer Skills

Do not list proficiency in common programs  like Word, Excel, LEXIS or Westlaw. It is assumed. If the position to which you are applying requires a technical background it might make sense to include, e.g., familiarity with a programming language, but remember:  you are applying to be a lawyer , and your resume should focus on fitness for that profession.

“Activities” or “Honors”

Unlike other types of resumes, legal resumes  do not generally contain  Activities or Honors sections. Rather, school-related activities should be listed as bullets under the relevant Education entry, or—if they are significant—may be made into Experience entries. Honors should be bullets under the school or experience in which they were received.

“Objective”

Legal resumes  do not contain  an “Objective” section.

“References”

Legal resumes  do not contain  a “References” section, nor do your documents need to state, “references available upon request.” It is assumed. References should be provided on a  separate page . See The Public Service Job Search Employment Documents  Sample List of References .

You have the option to upload and edit an existing resume, create a new one, or customize one of the sample resumes offered on the site. It's intuitive and easy to use, and it creates a professional-looking final product.

When starting from scratch, you'll go section by section, entering your education, employment history, hobbies and interests, professional skills, languages and references. Resume.com provides question prompts and tips for guidance, as well as career-specific examples you can add if you're struggling to find the right words. You can also choose to forgo any of these sections, rearrange sections and add custom ones depending on what you need. As you update and save each section, you can see how it will appear on the page on your resume preview to the right. You can also change the template, font style and size, or spacing at any time and see it update in real-time in the preview.

Once you're done, you can download your new resume (in PDF, DocX, RTF or TXT format), create a custom URL or print it out. You also have the option to upload it to Indeed, a job search site that partners with Resume.com . The account you make will work with both Indeed and Resume.com . On the privacy side, the site does collect user information. If you want to delete your account, simply click your profile icon and then Account . Clicking Close My Account deletes your account and your data. If you didn't make an account, you can still choose Delete Guest Data . You can also request your data, and the company will send you an email with what it has collected.

On the review site Trustpilot , Resume.com only has 38 reviews, but of those, 53% of them awarded the site four or five stars. Some negative reviews speak of difficulty unsubscribing from paid services, so read carefully as you use the free aspects of this service .

Best option for your first resume

Resume genius.

The website Resume Genius says you can "make a professional resume in 12 minutes." We tested it out and indeed had a solid first draft of an easy resume completed in about 10 minutes. Resume Genius takes you step-by-step through the process, prompting you with questions about your education and work experience to help you fill out the applicable sections. The site can also help you build cover letters and curriculum vitae. After you input all your information, you can choose different layout styles and colors. It's easy to move through, but you have to do it in order and fill in all the information before continuing. Resume Genius also offers examples of resumes, CVs and cover letters for specific jobs, as well as recommended jobs near you. Best free iOS resume builder

Resume star 2: pro cv designer.

Resume Star 2 isn't the most visually stunning resume design app for iOS, but it gets the job done. To use, tap each section of the resume, fill in your information and it will fill in a traditional template (you only get one layout). The app offers some example resumes you can start with and edit as needed, including job-specific ones for a: cashier, dental hygienist, receptionist, waitress, mechanic and senior manager.

You can add or delete any sections you like without needing to hit save every time you add information, and you can see your resume update as you go. The autosave feature makes it easy to toggle quickly between the different sections as well. At the end, you'll have a basic resume ready to go. The app's interface doesn't offer as much guidance about how to write your resume or what types of information to include. If you need extra help, tap the information icon in the bottom left and choose the Resume Writing Guide. This will open up a crash course on resume writing in your mobile browser. It also includes a job search feature.

The app collects payment via donations after you use the service -- you don’t have to pay if you don’t want to. The app connects to iCloud, and you can export your resume as a PDF to any location on your device(s). If you are happy with the service, you can choose the $6 "helped a bit" tier, a standard donation of $10, or the "really helped me" tier for $25.

Resume Star 2 has a 4.8 out of 5 rating, and more than 1,800 ratings in the App Store . The first version, Resume Star: Pro CV Maker, which is the same except for the iCloud connection, had a 4.9-star rating and more than 16,000 reviews. The site does not collect personally identifiable information without user consent, which seems to make it one of the more secure options available.

Best free Android resume writing service

Intelligentcv resume builder app.

Intelligent CV's Resume Builder App offers 42 resume templates and allows you to change font colors. Each resume section appears on a list, and you can move through sections in whichever order you choose, save and go on to another. You also have the option to add, delete or rearrange sections such as education, experience and skills. There’s a Help icon in each section for a little bit of extra guidance. Once you're finished, you can download your document for free as a PDF, which you can then save on your device or send via email or text.

On the downside, the app is ad-supported and ads for other resume creators do pop up, which can get confusing. The app also offers less guidance than some of the other services, which means it's not a great option if you're new to resumes.

Resume Builder App has one of the strongest privacy policies of the bunch. The app does not collect personally identifiable information , though third-party services (including Google Play services and analytics firms) may collect information. The app has 4.6 out of 5 stars and more than 424,000 Google Play Store ratings and is free to download.

How we tested resume sites and services

When we evaluated the different resume templates and builders, we looked at how each site or app allowed you to create new resumes, browse templates or upload and edit existing resumes. We also looked at how easy or hard it would be to customize different templates and sections, how much guidance was available, how user-friendly it was to navigate, plus reading and understanding each company’s privacy policies.

Some of our picks are free, some enlist the help of professional writers and some require a subscription or one-time payment. When it comes to premium or paid services, we evaluated how inclusive its packages were compared to basic or free versions. In many cases for the professional writing services, these paid tiers included more guidance and additional job search support like a cover letter and LinkedIn editing, suggested jobs to apply to and interview coaching.

Factors to consider when choosing a resume writing service

This was a key factor when compiling this list. Whether you’re looking for a free service to boost your current resume or interested in professional editing services, there’s something for everyone’s price range.

Ease of use

When looking at each website, we looked at how easy it was to navigate, browse templates and add, edit or remove different sections. We also considered whether you can download and share your resume for free and in what format.

Customization options

Customization options were essential, as everyone’s resume is going to look different. Having easy user control over your resume helps you create a resume that meets your industry’s standards and showcases your professional experiences.

Privacy policies

Privacy policies were the final important factor to consider, as many of these are websites and apps that can collect and store your personal information. All of the services and websites included on this list have decent privacy settings, and we noted which ones have exceptionally clear use cases and account deletion policies.

Public Interest Commission Recommends Employer and PSAC “Resume Collective Bargaining Immediately” to reach an agreement for the Border Services Group

From: Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat

Yesterday, the Public Interest Commission (PIC) released its recommendations for reaching an agreement between the Treasury Board Secretariat and the Public Service Alliance of Canada for the Border Services (FB) Group.

May 30, 2024 – Ottawa, Ontario – Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat

Yesterday, the Public Interest Commission (PIC) released its recommendations for reaching an agreement between the Treasury Board Secretariat and the Public Service Alliance of Canada for the Border Services (FB) Group. Importantly, the PIC recommends that both sides resume negotiations immediately and start to reduce the number of outstanding issues. The Commission also urges the parties to use improvements achieved during negotiations at other PSAC tables to determine “how those resolutions might be adjusted or adopted” to reach an agreement for the Border Services group.

The employer welcomes the report and looks forward to entering into mediated discussions beginning June 3. We remain at the bargaining table, committed to negotiating a deal that is fair to employees and reasonable to the Canadian taxpayer. We are optimistic that an agreement can be reached quickly with a shared commitment to good faith bargaining.

Without question, employees in the Border Services group provide important services to Canadians. We are fully committed to reaching an agreement at the table that is fair for them, fair for their colleagues across the Public Service for whom agreements have recently been signed, and reasonable for taxpayers.

We have already reached agreements with more that 80% of the public service and we are committed to doing the same for the Border Services employees.

Quick Facts

  • The Border Services Group is comprised of approximately 11,000 positions at the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) that are primarily involved in the planning, development, delivery, or management of the inspection and control of people and goods entering Canada. 9,500 members of the Borders Services Group are represented.
  • 90% of frontline Border Services Officers are essential to the safety and security of Canada. They cannot strike and will continue to staff ports of entry in the event of a strike.

Our Ranking Methodology for Best Resume Writing Services

To comprehensively and objectively rank the top resume writing services, it is essential to have a thorough methodology. The first step in this process was conducting extensive research and analysis. This involved gathering a comprehensive list of reputable resume-writing services from multiple sources such as online searches, customer reviews, industry directories, and personal recommendations.

  • Feature analysis: Evaluate the functionalities provided by each resume builder, considering elements like template variety and quality, customization flexibility, user-friendly editing and formatting options, import/export capabilities, spell check and grammar tools, and integration with job search platforms and professional networks.
  • Template collection: Examine the assortment and quality of templates. Look for a wide range that suits various industries, job levels, and design preferences, considering these templates’ aesthetics, readability, and contemporary design.
  • Editing and customization: Scrutinize the adaptability and user-friendliness of the editing and customization tools each resume builder provides. Assess the capacity to add or modify sections, reorganize content, and tailor resumes to specific job requirements.
  • User interface and experience: Analyze the user interface and the overall user experience each resume builder offers. Evaluate the ease of navigation, instruction clarity, guidance or prompts, and the platform’s responsiveness.
  • Integration with job search platforms: Determine whether resume builders offer seamless integration with popular job search platforms and professional networks like LinkedIn or ATS systems. Consider how well the resumes can be transferred and their compatibility with these platforms.
  • Additional resources: Evaluate if the resume builders provide extra resources such as sample resumes, tools for creating cover letters, interview tips, or career advice. Consider the breadth and practicality of these supplementary resources.
  • Mobile-friendliness: Gauge the mobile-friendliness and responsiveness of the resume builders, recognizing the growing trend of mobile job searching and application processes.
  • Customer support: Reflect on the accessibility and quality of customer support services, encompassing options like live chat, email support, or knowledge bases. Assess the responsiveness and helpfulness of the support team.
  • Pricing and value for money: Appraise the pricing plans presented by the resume builders in terms of the value they offer based on features, usability, and overall service quality.
  • Industry reputation: Consider the standing and trustworthiness of the resume builders, considering factors such as awards, recognition, partnerships, and user feedback from reputable sources.

Buyer’s Guide: Why Use a Resume Builder?

Crafting a well-crafted CV comes naturally to particular job seekers. However, even the most seasoned experts may need help in resume writing. If you find yourself in need of help with creating a compelling resume, here are several ways in which the best online resume builder can be beneficial:

Resume builders provide users with pre-designed templates and helpful tips, streamlining the process of writing a resume and alleviating stress.

Offers Writing Tips

Promoting oneself requires considerable effort. Only some people possess writing skills, even if they enjoy self-promotion. To showcase one’s experience and knowledge effectively, a resume builder can help select the most appropriate words and phrases.

Improves Design

In every field, there are unique standards for an impressive resume. If you need to gain knowledge in design or the tools, resume builders can provide free templates to enhance your resume’s visual appeal and quality.

Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)

Recruiters often use ATS systems to scan resumes. A good resume builder will help with formatting to ensure that your resume is easy for these systems to read.

What’s the Best Resume Builder?

The ideal resume builder for each individual may differ according to their specific requirements. If you prefer a tool that offers step-by-step guidance in creating your resume, we suggest using a builder that provides helpful tips and recommendations. If you prefer a resume builder that auto-generates a summary, we recommend using a tool that extracts information from your LinkedIn profile.

For those who enjoy having creative control over their resumes, we suggest using a platform with features. By selecting the resume builder that aligns with your needs and suits your industry and personal style, you’ll significantly increase your chances of capturing the attention of hiring managers.

Resume Builder vs. Resume Writing Service: What Matters for You

When it comes to crafting a resume, there are three options available. You can opt to create it independently, use a resume builder tool, or enlist the services of a professional resume writer. Your best choice will depend on your writing abilities, available time, and financial resources.

Do-It-Yourself

You have the choice to construct a resume entirely by yourself. The benefit of this option is that it costs nothing but requires a significant amount of effort. Along with composing all the information, you must possess graphic design skills.

This approach works well if you have these abilities, but with them, your options for creating a resume are unlimited. To overcome this limitation, you can use a resume builder or enlist the help of a resume writing service.

Resume Builder

A tool for creating resumes allows you to input your details into a template, resulting in an original appearance and layout with no design work. The top resume building tools also offer suggestions on enhancing your resume and tailoring it to match the specific job you are applying for.

While you are still responsible for writing the content, once it is written, you can quickly transfer that information into any other template with just a few simple clicks. Some of these services are free and many like to promote themselves as such, but most require a small payment to download your finished resume.

Professional Resume Writing Service

Professional resume writing services are expensive, but they offer the convenience of handling all the work for you. An experienced writer will gather relevant information about your background and transform it into a unique and engaging resume.

The process typically takes a few days, and the level of originality in the outcome largely relies on your choice of company and writer. However, we will not delve into these services further in this guide.

Are Resume Builders Worth It?

Definitely, without a doubt. An effective resume creator will guarantee that your CV is formatted correctly to navigate Applicant Tracking Systems and ultimately reach the hands of recruiters.

Is It Unprofessional to Use a Microsoft Word Resume Template?

Relying on a template will not set you apart, and there is a high likelihood that your application will be dismissed because your resume is identical to those of other job seekers.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right resume builder is crucial in today’s competitive job market. Creating a professional and impactful resume that stands out from the crowd can significantly impact your job search. With the right tool, you can save time, improve your chances of landing an interview, and ultimately secure your dream job.

When selecting a resume builder, consider your specific needs and priorities. Look for features like customizable templates, industry-specific examples, and the ability to export your resume in different formats. Consider user reviews and ratings to ensure you choose a reputable and reliable platform.

Remember, an exceptional tool for crafting resumes should give you the power to present your skills, experience, and accomplishments effectively. It should simplify and expedite creating a resume without hassle. Investing in a reliable resume builder is investing in your professional future.

Therefore, explore the different options available for resume builders. Test out their free trials or demos and choose the best fit for your objectives. Our top recommendation is Super Star Resume . This meticulously designed resume can open doors to exciting career prospects and be a dependable companion on your journey toward success.

U.k. public doctors to resume strikes ahead of general election.

Junior doctors join a picket line outside St Thomas' Hospital as members of the British Medical ... [+] Association take part in a five-day strike action over pay in London, United Kingdom on February 26, 2024.

Junior doctors in England say they’ll walk out for five days ahead of the U.K.’s upcoming general election if politicians don’t agree to increase compensation.

Union leaders say prime minister Rishi Sunak can stop the strike if he makes a “concrete commitment to restore doctors’ pay” as part of his campaign for re-election.

If the industrial action goes ahead, it will see junior doctors — who are roughly the equivalent of U.S. resident doctors — leave their posts from June 27 to July 2. The general election will take place on July 4.

In the U.K., the vast majority of healthcare is provided by the state and most doctors are public sector employees. Although an independent body recommends how much pay National Health Service staff should receive, lawmakers ultimately decide on compensation.

Junior doctors say their income has risen below inflation for 15 years. They want a pay rise of 35%.

They argue better salaries are needed to attract and retain enough staff to ensure the country’s health service can meet the demands of an ageing population. But ministers say their pay requests are unaffordable.

If the planned strike goes ahead, it will be the 11th time junior doctors have walked out during the current dispute. It will result in the cancellation of numerous non-urgent appointments as hospitals prioritize emergency care.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

It will also cost the organizations millions of pounds in temporary staffing fees and lost income due to reduced activity.

Earlier this month, doctor’s union the British Medical Association announced it had entered into mediated talks with government ministers — a move that seemed like it could finally move the needle on the strikes.

But union leaders said on Wednesday that they’re yet to see a “credible” offer.

“When we entered mediation... we did so under the impression that we had a functioning government that would soon be making an offer,” said BMA junior doctors committee co-chairs Robert Laurenson and Vivek Trivedi in a statement. “Clearly no offer is now forthcoming. Junior doctors are fed up and out of patience.”

Hospital industry body NHS Providers called the action “a worrying escalation” in the long-running action.

“This strike will inevitably hit patients hard,” said deputy chief executive Saffron Cordery in a statement . “Trust leaders and their teams will do everything they can to protect patient safety. They will spend countless hours preparing for the walkout, which includes cancelling and rescheduling appointments. This is time they would prefer to spend improving patient care and tackling sky-high waiting lists.”

She called on leaders to resolve the dispute as a “top priority.”

Several other staffing groups have also walked out over the last year and a half over pay and working conditions. Nurses, ambulance staff and senior doctors (known as ‘consultants’ in the U.K.) all took part in numerous strikes last year. But the majority of this action has come to an end.

"Nearly 1.5m appointments have been delayed since industrial action began, with strikes having now cost the NHS an estimated £3bn, ($3.81bn),” said Cordery.

“We cannot go on like this,” she added. “Politicians and unions must urgently find a way to resolve all disputes for the sake of patients, staff and the NHS.”

Donald Trump found guilty of all 34 charges in hush money trial

By CNN's Kara Scannell, Lauren Del Valle and Jeremy Herb in the courthouse

Our live coverage has ended. Follow  the latest news on Donald Trump's guilty verdict or read through the updates below.

Stormy Daniels' attorney says she was "really emotional" after verdict

From CNN's Kaanita Iyer

Stormy Daniels' attorney Clark Brewster said his client was "really emotional" following former President Donald Trump's guilty verdict in the hush money case.

He told CNN's Kaitlan Collins that Daniels faced the "realization of the finality" and had "a lot of emotions flowing."

Brewster also responded to Trump attorney Todd Blanche saying he'd raise Daniels' testimony in appeal, arguing that "it was straightforward" and "they had an opportunity to cross examine her."

Stormy Daniels' friend said "it's a joyous day" after Trump's guilty verdict

From CNN's Piper Hudspeth Blackburn

Alana Evans, right, speaks with CNN's Abby Phillip on May 30.

Alana Evans, friend of Stormy Daniels and an adult film star told CNN’s Abby Phillip that she — and Daniels — absolutely feels vindicated by Trump’s guilty verdict, calling it a “joyous day.”

"We were deemed credible, and it's heartwarming in that way because so many people judge us for who we are — our backgrounds — it's something that's thrown in our faces again and again ... it isn't a reflection of who we are as people," Evans said. Evans added that she's "really happy simply because it meant that at the end of the day, it really is a adult film star who is stepping forward and being the person to put that man to the truth."

Here's what happens now that Trump has been convicted in his hush money criminal case

From CNN's Devan Cole

Former President Donald Trump leaves the Manhattan Criminal Court in New York after a jury found him guilty of all 34 felony counts in his hush money trial on Thursday, May 30.

A New York jury  convicting Donald Trump  on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records brought the former president’s weekslong trial to a close but ushered in a new phase of the historic case.

Now in the unique position of being the first former US president convicted of a felony, Trump faces the possibility of a prison sentence or probation for his crimes stemming from a hush money payment scheme he helped facilitate ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

Trump – who is known for mounting lengthy appeals of court rulings against him – has said he will appeal the conviction, which can be done after he is sentenced.

Here’s what to know about the case following Trump’s conviction:

When will Trump be sentenced?

Judge Juan Merchan has set Trump’s sentencing for 10 a.m. ET on July 11. For now, the former president will remain out of prison as he awaits his sentencing. Prosecutors did not ask for Trump to post any bond.

Can Trump appeal his conviction?

Shortly after Trump was convicted, his attorney Todd Blanche asked Merchan for an acquittal of the charges notwithstanding the guilty verdict. The judge rejected the pro forma request.

Can Trump still be elected president?

Nothing in the US Constitution bars a convicted criminal from running for the nation’s highest office, University of California, Los Angeles law professor Richard L. Hasen has consistently said.

“The Constitution contains only limited qualifications for running for office (being at least 35 years old, a natural born citizen, and at least 14 years a resident of the U.S.),” Hasen continued.

Will the conviction cost Trump his right to vote?

Trump is a Florida resident. When it comes to the Manhattan guilty verdict just rendered,  Trump’s right to vote in Florida  in November’s election will depend on whether he is sentenced to a term in prison and if he has finished serving that prison sentence by the time of the election.

Florida’s felon voting prohibitions apply to people with out-of-state convictions. However, if a Floridian’s conviction is out of state, Florida defers to that state’s laws for how felon can regain their voting rights.

Read more on the aftermath of Trump's guilty verdict.

Correction: This post has been updated to reflect when Trump is allowed to file an appeal.

In pictures: Trump convicted in hush money case

For the first time in history, a former US president has been convicted of a felony.

A jury on Thursday found Donald Trump guilty  on 34 charges of falsifying business records. Prosecutors alleged that the former president engaged in a cover-up scheme to hide reimbursement payments made to his former attorney, Michael Cohen, who had paid hush money to adult film star Stormy Daniels to stop her from going public about a past affair with Trump before the 2016 presidential election. Trump has denied the affair.

Trump is facing 3 other criminal cases while running again for president

From CNN’s Devan Cole, Amy O'Kruk and Curt Merrill

Former President Donald Trump appears in Manhattan Criminal Court, Thursday, May 30, in New York.

The hush money criminal case against former President Donald Trump was only one of  four criminal cases  he is juggling while running again for president.

The former president still faces criminal indictments in Georgia, Washington, DC, and Florida. Trump has pleaded not guilty to every charge in these cases.

Here's a recap of each case:

  • Hush money:  Trump was first indicted in March 2023 by the Manhattan district attorney on state charges related to a hush-money payment to an adult film star in 2016. Prosecutors alleged Trump was part of an illegal conspiracy to  undermine  the integrity of the 2016 election. Further, they alleged he was part of an unlawful plan to suppress negative information, including the $130,000 payment. He was found guilty of all 34 counts on Thursday.
  • Classified documents:  Trump was indicted in June 2023 by a federal grand jury in Miami for taking classified national defense documents from the White House after he left office and resisting the government’s attempts to retrieve the materials. The National Archives said in early 2022 that at least 15 boxes of White House records were recovered from the estate, including  some that were classified . The charges were brought by special counsel Jack Smith. However,  Judge Aileen Cannon  has  indefinitely postponed the trial , citing significant issues around classified evidence that would need to be worked out before the federal criminal case goes to a jury.
  • Federal election interference:  Smith separately charged the former president last August with four crimes over his efforts to reverse the 2020 election results. The indictment alleges Trump and a co-conspirator "attempted to exploit the violence and chaos at the Capitol by calling lawmakers to convince them ... to delay the certification" of the election. That case is currently on hold  as the Supreme Court  weighs Trump’s claims of presidential immunity in the matter.
  • Fulton County:  State prosecutors in Georgia brought a similar election subversion case against Trump and others. An Atlanta-based grand jury on August 14, 2023, indicted Trump and 18 others on state charges stemming from their alleged efforts to overturn the former president’s 2020 electoral defeat. A trial date has not yet been set in that case.

Melania Trump is in New York City, source says

From CNN's Kristen Holmes

Former first lady Melania Trump and her son, Barron Trump, are currently in New York, a source familiar with the matter told CNN. The two were already in New York when the verdict was read earlier Thursday, although it was not immediately clear when they arrived in the city.

Melania Trump did not attend a fundraiser dinner with Trump at a private residence Thursday night in New York City.

She was not seen at court during the trial.

Schumer says “no one is above the law” after Trump verdict

From CNN's Morgan Rimmer

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer posted a brief statement about the verdict in former President Donald Trump's hush money trial on social media.

"No one is above the law. The verdict speaks for itself," the New York Democrat said.

Trump attorney Todd Blanche outlines appeal arguments

Todd Blanche appears on CNN after a Manhattan jury found his client, Donald Trump, guilty of falsifying business records on Thursday, May 30

Donald Trump's attorney Todd Blanche told CNN's Kaitlan Collins Thursday that the former president's legal team plans to argue in its appeal of the verdict that the jury was biased against Trump and the timing of the trial was unfair.

"Every single person on the jury knew Donald Trump as president, as candidate, from 'The Apprentice' so I don't accept that this was a fair place to try President Trump," Blanche said.

He added: "There was so much publicity around the witnesses and around – leading up to the trial that our system of justice isn't supposed to be a system where every person who walks into the courtroom knows about the case."

"The law says a person is entitled to a fair trial in front of a jury of their peers and we just think that because of everything around the lead up this trial, it made it very difficult for the jury to evaluate the evidence kind of independent of what they knew coming in," Blanche said.

Blanche previewed that Trump's legal team will now "vigorously fight" with motions due in a few weeks. And "if that is not successful," the attorney said they will appeal following the sentencing in July.
