Researching the efficacy of Lumosity

What we did

Lumos Labs conducted a randomized study of Lumosity brain training and published the results in a peer-reviewed research journal.

In it, half of the 4,715 participants who completed the study trained five days per week, for fifteen minutes each day on Lumosity while the other half did online crossword puzzles as an active control.

What we found

After 10 weeks, Lumosity users improved more than the control group on our assessments of working memory, short term memory, processing speed, problem solving, fluid reasoning, and overall cognitive function.

These results are promising, but more research is needed to determine the connection between improved assessment scores and everyday tasks in participants' lives.

Next questions

Future research should address the risk of inadvertent experimenter bias and the risk of attrition bias in this study, as both the Lumosity and crossword groups had approximately 50% attrition rate. As with all scientific research, there is also a risk of publication bias.

Google I/O 2024 live updates: The latest on Gemini AI, Android 15 and more

Google is gearing up to share a slew of news around AI and Search at its I/O developer conference on May 14, and we expect a ton of announcements around Gemini, Android, Search and more. The company couldn't even wait till its own keynote to let us in on what it's been cooking, and has already teased us with a video of an intriguing camera-based AI feature on its social accounts.

Based on what we know so far, this is shaping up to be a hours-long launch event chock full of announcements. Gemini will be accessible in the side panel on Google apps like Gmail and Docs

Google is adding Gemini-powered AI automation to more tasks in Workspace. In its Tuesday Google I/O keynote, the company said its advanced Gemini 1.5 Pro will soon be available in the Workspace side panel as “the connective tissue across multiple applications with AI-powered workflows,” as AI grows more intelligent, learns more about you and automates more of your workflow.

Who wants to bet if Google will top that next year?

Frankly I'm just glad it didn't last any longer than that. While Sam and Karissa go and check out whatever demos might be available at I/O 2024, come on over and join myself and senior reviewer Devindra Hardawar on Engadget's YouTube channel. I'm sure you have thoughts and feelings to share on everything Google just announced!

And that's a wrap on the keynote, it was *just* under 2 hours of all things Gemini and AI.

120 mentions of "AI" in this keynote, according to Sundar (who just came back onstage) and Gemini. I actually would have guessed a bit higher.

Google, like most of its AI peers, plans to use watermarking to increase transparency around AI-generated content with SynthID. Those watermarks will be expanding to AI-generated video (remember those Veo demos from earlier?) and text, which is especially interesting because AI-generated text is so much more prevalent (and in some ways harder to detect than images or video).

SynthID is a tool that Google is making so that it's easy detect AI-generated content. But it also sounds like something from the Blade Runner universe that people can use to detect replicants.

We're getting into "building AI responsibly" portion, with a look at Google's approach to red-teaming, the process for looking for threats, "problematic" outputs and other issues that might cause problems for Google (and maybe the rest of us). After the fiasco with Gemini's image generator earlier this year, I'm actually surprised they waited this long to bring all this up.

So it appears we've reached the developer-focused section of the I/O keynote. Karissa and I were just talking about how for non-developers, it can be hard to contextualize the amounts of tokens available in various Gemini plans.

We're getting a deeper dive into Gemini Flash, which we first heard about at the top of the keynote. Flash is the "lighter weight" Gemini model that has lower latency and is more efficient. It sounds like this is meant for developers and organizations that don't need the full power of Gemini 1.5 Pro but still want to take advantage of multimodal capabilities.

Yea, I think the scam alert feature is really nice, because it can give you a gut check in real-time when you might be feeling that a call feels a little sus.

Google Gemini can power a virtual AI teammate with its own Workspace account

Google's Gemini AI systems can do a lot, judging by today's I/O keynote . That includes the option to set up a virtual teammate with its own Workspace account. You can configure the teammate to carry out specific tasks, such as to monitor and track projects, organize information, provide context, pinpoint trends after analyzing data and to play a role in team collaboration.

Google has another solution to the never-ending scam calls. If you pick up, and it detects that the call is "suspicious" or a likely scam, it can surface a big alert right on your phone, potentially saving you from buying thousands of dollars of gift cards or transferring funds to a rogue account. Now Google has shared that the new tool is also coming to it's TalkBack feature.

TalkBack is an existing tool that reads aloud a description of an image, whether it's one you captured or from the internet. Gemini Nano's multimodal support should provide a more detailed understanding of the image.

Chip is essentially an AI coworker.. it can analyze shared documents, schedule meetings and track projects across your company's workspace. It sounds like organizations will be able to customize their own versions of Chip to suit their needs.

Google just announced some nifty improvements to its Gemini AI chatbot for Android devices as part of the company’s I/O 2024 event . The AI is now part of the Android operating system, allowing it to integrate in a more comprehensive way.

The coolest new feature wouldn’t be possible without that integration with the underlying OS. Gemini is now much better at understanding context as you control apps on the smartphone. What does this mean exactly? Once the tool officially launches as part of Android 15, you’ll be able to bring up a Gemini overlay that rests on top of the app you’re using. This will allow for context-specific actions and queries.

Android's Circle to Search can now help students solve math and physics homework

Google has introduced another capability for its Circle to Search feature at the company's annual I/O developer conference, and it's something that could help students better understand potentially difficult class topics . The feature will now be able to show them step-by-step instructions for a "range of physics and math word problems." They just have to activate the feature by long-pressing the home button or navigation bar and then circling the problem that's got them stumped, though some math problems will require users to be signed up for Google's experimental Search Labs feature.

We're officially one hour into this keynote, by the way, and still no love for Android. I know there will be plenty of time for Android updates later on, but it says a lot about how far Google's priorities have shifted, it wasn't that long ago that Android was the star of I/O. Now, it feels almost like an afterthought.

Though I guess that's sort of skipping ahead of where AI is at right now.

But I have to wonder if this role might be better served by an AI agent that would do these same things with potentially even less manual input.

Yea, I'm not going to lie, the ability of AI's to summarize things is nice, but it feels like the lowest rung of its capabilities. So it's good to see how things are evolving with contextual replies and carrying over data between various apps like Gmail, Calendar, etc.

Gemini is going to power some interesting new features in the Gmail app, including summaries of long email threads. You'll also be able to chat with Gemini directly to find details from throughout your inbox. There are also new reply suggestions that can understand the context of your emails for (hopefully) more useful text suggestions. I've never been particularly impressed with Gmail's auto-suggestions but maybe Gemini will make them actually useful.

Yea, making all this work in the real world isn't something you can just snap your fingers and voila. But down the line it almost makes me wonder if humanity's role going forward might be to just fact-check whatever army of AI agents you have at your disposal.

Okay, this actually seems pretty useful. Search is getting video recognition capabilities so you can search based on the contents of a video, which could be particularly helpful when you need to fix something or answer a question you can't easily describe. Google will be able to understand what's in the clip and (hopefully) surface relevant results.

Google is enhancing Android’s Circle to Search — the feature that lets you literally circle something on your Android phone’s screen to search it on Google — with a new ability to generate instructions on how to solve school math and physics problems .

Using an Android phone or tablet, students can now use Circle to Search to get AI assistance on mathematical word problems from their homework. The feature will help unpack the problem and list what the student needs to do to get the correct answer. According to Google, it won’t actually do the homework for you — only help you approach the problem.

Over the past year, the use of AI tools like ChatGPT has become a hot topic in the field of education, with plenty of concern over how students can and will use it to get work done quickly. Google, however, is explicitly positioning this as a feature to support education, potentially walking around some of the concerns about AI doing all of the work for students.

Later this year, Circle to Search will also gain the ability to solve complex math equations that involve formulas, diagrams, graphs, and more. Google is using LearnLM, its new AI model that’s fine-tuned for learning, to make the new Circle to Search abilities work.

Circle to Search first launched on  Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series in January and then on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro later the same month. It’s one of the star new features of Android, and although iOS users can’t yet circle their math homework for help, anything is possible .

In today’s Khan Academy video of Math tutoring with his son the interactivity between annotating the triangle and the assistant is impressively synchronized.

Does anyone know what APIs are used to create this interactive multi-modal experience? Is the whiteboard converted to video and sent to the model?

That’s part of the unprecedented publicity push of this new model. Filmed in the OpenAI setup as were a bunch of others in the publicity package, released with perfect timing. Plausible “nice” application of the technology, instead of replacing phone trees for corporations.

The app likely has the ability to “look” when you say look, as you notice the speech slowing down while obtaining the initial image. The model can process over an image a second, but one can listen, that a lot of the discussion wouldn’t need visual cues. The actual context loading of captured images, context length management of chat with images, aborting output with speech, you can imagine them all with generation and API methods. Continuation of generation upon a dynamic context is something that we don’t get.

The ChatGPT app is its own product with methods not available to consume by API even now.

Since gpt4-o is multimodal expect more modes of input to be released as time goes on. How you plug audio, video, etc into the API I guess will come with an API update soon.

One possible method might be that the canvas in the Khan Academy app detects when the pencil draws something and possibly sends a few images as the pencil moves to provide enough context. OpenAI ’s new GPT-4o is here — and it can laugh at bad jokes (and crack its own), sing in tune and help hail London cabs with realistic emotion and amidst regular human interruption. 

OpenAI today released 16 videos of GPT-4o (short for GPT-4 omni) in action, showing the multimodal foundation large language model (LLM) interacting with the world in male and female voices in real time based on audio, visual and text inputs. 

For instance, after correctly identifying that the human it was speaking with (OpenAI president Greg Brockman) was preparing to make a big announcement — based on his professional attire and the presence of studio lights and a microphone — the model was informed that it was the subject.  

A female voice replied, seemingly coyly: “The announcement is about me? Well color me intrigued. You’ve got me on the edge of my…well, I don’t really have a seat but you get the idea.”

OpenAI revealed the new free model today at its highly-anticipated Spring Updates event, with a notable 113,000 people joining the livestream. The model’s text and image input roll out today in OpenAI’s API and ChatGPT, with voice and video available in the coming weeks.

Praising math abilities, giving fashion advice

GPT-4o can identify a users’ emotional state and surroundings, realistically simulate various emotions of its own and offer advice on a multitude of topics. Models on different devices can also interact with each other. 

For instance, in one of the videos posted today by OpenAI , the model was told that it would be conversing with another version of itself. To this, a female voice responded: “Well, well well, just when I thought things couldn’t get any more interesting — talking to another AI that can see the world. This sounds like a plot twist in the AI universe.”

After being asked to be punchy, direct and describe everything in their line of vision, the models took turns describing a man who was “sleek and stylish with their black leather jacket and light colored shirt” sitting in a room with “natural and artificial” lighting that was “dramatic and modern” and featuring a plant in the background that added “a touch of green to the space.” 

When a second person entered to give bunny ears to the first, GPT-4o was asked to sing a song based on what happened — and it did, crooning, “surprise guests with a playful streak.” 

In other videos, the model laughs at dad jokes (“that’s perfectly hilarious”) performs real-time translation of Spanish to English and vice versa, sings in a lullaby about “majestic potatoes” (first replying to the prompt, “now that’s what I call a mashup”), emulates a sarcastic voice much like the droll MTV cartoon character “Daria,” correctly identifies winners of rock-paper-scissors and recognizes that it’s someone’s birthday based on the presence of a piece of cake with a candle in it. 

It also interacts with puppies — replying in a sing-songy tone in the manner people talk to dogs, “well hello there cutie, what’s your name little fluff ball?” (it was Bowser by the way) — and guided a blind man through London, identifying through video input that the King was in residence based on the presence of the Royal Standard flag and described ducks “gently gliding across the water, moving in a fairly relaxed manner, not in a hurry.”

Additionally, GPT-4o can teach math; in one video it walks a young man through a problem based on an image of a triangle. The model asked the student to identify which sides of the triangle were the opposite adjacent and hypotenuse, relative to angle alpha. When he deduced that alpha equaled 7 over 25, the female voice praised: “You did a great job identifying the sides.”

GPT-4o can give fashion advice, too. In yet another video the LLM helped a mussy-haired job candidate wearing a slouchy T-shirt determine whether he looked presentable enough for an interview. 

A female voice chuckled and advised him to run a hand through his hair. The model also remarked drolly, “You definitely have the ‘I’ve been coding all night’ look down, which actually might work in your favor.” 

Winning the internet — or an underwhelming disappointment

Not surprisingly given the diversity of the AI community, the response, at least on social media, has been all over the place. 

Some are saying that it “wins the internet,” taking ChatGPT capabilities to whole new levels (and that it quickly rival Google Translate). One user called the video of AI teaching math “insane,” adding “The future is so, so bright.”

Nvidia senior research scientist Jim Fan — among others — noted how the assistant was “lively and even a bit flirty,” calling back to the 2013 sci-fi movie “Her.”

Still others called it “by far the most underrated OpenAI event ever.”

Ultimately, AI advisor and investor Allie K. Miller commented, “The super techies are disappointed that they don’t have some holographic laser beam that shoots out of their phone and reads their minds, and the wider business population didn’t seem to watch and weigh in.”
