Rmit PhD Collaboration With Parsons School of Design

RMIT PhD student and teacher looking at computer

The RMIT–Parsons PhD collaboration offers design and creative practice research practitioners a new academic pathway to further their creative inquiry and professional options in an innovative global doctoral program.

Launched in 2023, this PhD collaboration is distinguished by its practice-based research focus, an approach that RMIT has been spearheading at the doctoral level for more than two decades. Combining the academic excellence and experience of RMIT with the dynamism and industry connections of Parsons and New York City, this new collaboration will position candidates to develop new forms of practice research in a global context.

Students will apply to and matriculate through RMIT’s PhD program. Upon completion, RMIT will confer their degree in Australia. However, they will pursue their doctoral research at Parsons in New York City. Each candidate will have at least two supervisors: a lead supervisor at RMIT and an associate supervisor at Parsons.

The RMIT–Parsons PhD collaboration is designed for candidates who already have a master’s degree (those seeking a preliminary master’s degree are encouraged to consider Parsons graduate degree programs here ). For the most part, candidates will direct their own practice research, in coordination with supervising faculty and in close collaboration with a community of PhD candidates who are conducting their research at Parsons School of Design at The New School. They will benefit from RMIT’s Practice Research Symposium events, held in Australia, Asia, Europe, and now in New York.

Submit your research interests and get in touch .

Practice Research Symposium

A unique and exciting feature of the RMIT PhD offering is the Practice Research Symposium (PRS), a forum for the exchange of ideas and the development of new directions in practice research. Held twice annually, the symposium brings together PhD candidates, supervisors, and invited guests to explore and review the candidates’ work in an open, public gathering. Parsons School of Design will host the first PRS North America in early winter 2023.

The RMIT PRS website describes the process: “Each candidate’s presentation at the PRS allows for a public consideration of their research. The process of inquiry that develops over the course of their research candidature is punctuated by these presentations, which opens up the research to interrogation and explication through group discussion involving peers, supervisors and other experts.”

You can learn more about the Practice Research Symposium on the PRS webpage

Candidates in the new PhD collaboration will work with faculty from both RMIT and Parsons, but their primary geographical home will be the Parsons NYC campus. There they will benefit from a highly developed culture of creative practice and design research and a dynamic network of Parsons instructors, dozens of whom have PhDs in design or a closely related field.

Frequently Asked Questions

Prospective applicants should begin by completing the Expression of Interest form. If further detail is required, please contact the RMIT chair of PRS (Practice Research Symposium) North America to discuss the expression of interest and application process.

All applications will be reviewed for program eligibility according to RMIT’s standard admission procedures and in consultation with Parsons.

Candidates can pursue a PhD on a full-time or part-time basis. Part-time study is subject to conditions; details will be made available during the application process.

The program is three to four years for full-time candidates (six to eight years part-time).

Yes. Candidates will be able to balance work and study during the PhD program.

Although full-time residency in NYC is not required, attendance at up to two Practice Research Symposium (PRS) events annually is expected. Additionally, candidates and supervisors are expected to organize regular meetings throughout their candidature.

Yes, international students are encouraged to apply to this program and may qualify as RMIT International Offshore students.

Candidates must complete a total of two courses during the first two years of the program. The first is Doing Research; the second is Research for Impact. Elective courses are optional, as are online professional development short courses.

An honors or master’s degree (with a research training component) is advantageous for your application but not required; professional and/or practice equivalence is also taken into consideration. This should be discussed with your nominated senior supervisor and the PRS chair.

As part of the application process, each candidate must submit a written research proposal with a general outline of the research questions and methods.

Candidates for the RMIT–Parsons PhD collaboration will be classified as international offshore candidates with RMIT. There is no requirement to be located in or visit Melbourne. Candidates can remain in their home country and city but are expected to visit the Parsons campus in New York City for Practice Research Symposium (PRS) events. We are exploring ways to support student mobility. The RMIT PRS is a broad network of global sites (Australia, Asia, Europe, and now PRS North America in NYC); candidates can explore opportunities to visit or present at these sites, but they will have a PRS “home” at Parsons in NYC for milestone and examination purposes.

The RMIT-Parsons collaboration is a doctoral degree program conferred by RMIT.

The RMIT-Parsons PhD collaboration is delivered primarily as a practice-based higher research degree. Candidates are required to pass three milestones during candidature (Confirmation of Candidature, Second Milestone Review, and Third Milestone Review), and successful completion entails a tripartite submission for examination (with holistic weighting): a written dissertation (of about 35,000 to 40,000 words), an exhibition of artifacts of the practice research, and a public presentation for exposition and defense of the research. In some circumstances, the program will accept a text-only submission.

phd in education rmit

After graduating from RMIT with an Honours degree in Biomedical Engineering, and working in the industry for two years, Jordan decided to return to university to follow his passion for research.

Jordan decided to undertake research in lattice metamaterials, due to there being many global experts in the field accessible at RMIT.

“It’s also a young area that has only really existed for the past 20 years so I could have a tangible impact,” he said.

Jordan found his College and the Centre for Additive Manufacturing provided a strong support system that fostered community and positive discussion.

This helped him to feel prepared for his milestone presentations throughout his PhD journey.

“My supervisors Professor Ma Qian, Professor Martin Leary, Dr Elizabeth Kyriakou and Professor Milan Brandt invested countless days and nights positively shaping my research and fostering my development,” he said.

“I am truly fortunate to have had such inspiring mentors, whether it was designing experiments, teaching me how to present at conferences (around the world) and write high-level publications, or providing me with opportunities like running RMIT’s additive manufacturing machines.”

After four years of working towards his PhD, Jordan said he feels amazing to finally be graduating this May.

“As I consider graduating, the weight of years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice runs through my mind,” he said.

I have a sense of pride in knowing that I've reached the pinnacle of academic achievement in my field, yet it's also a moment marked with nostalgia and reflection.

Alt Text is not present for this image, Taking dc:title 'Graduate Jordan Noronha '

The road to graduation has not always been easy, as Jordan reflected, one challenge he faced from time management.

“As the success of your PhD is entirely dependent on you, it can often become an obsession,” he said.

“To overcome this, I always made sure to ‘clock off’ on the weekends and maintain a healthy social life.”

When asked what he would say to any students considering undertaking a PhD at RMIT, Jordan stressed the importance of taking advantage of the RMIT community.

“The best advice I can give is to not try and do it all by yourself,” he said.

“RMIT encourages a community of researchers who are always accessible and open to discussion.

“Many of these people not only share your passion for research but have also experienced the same challenges you may be facing, so don’t be afraid to reach out.”
