The department offers a PhD program in seven academic disciplines (Economics, Literature, Linguistics, Philosophy, Policy, Psychology, and Sociology). The PhD program consists of both full time and part-time students.

Who can apply?

Eligibility: M.A./M.Sc (2 years)/M.Com/M.B.A/M.Phil or B.Tech/BE/B.Sc Engg. (4 years) or M.Tech/ME/MS Research (2-3 years)/M.D/ D.M./M.S/M.DS

Minimum qualifications: 60% marks or 6.00 CGPA on a 10-point scale and qualified GATE/ CSIR/ UGC-NET or JRF/ICAR/ICMR/ DST - INSPIRE Fellowship (check the prospectus of the current admission cycle for details about the exemptions and clarifications.)

A Masters degree in any subject with at least 55% marks or equivalent letter grade will be the minimum eligibility for admission.

A Masters degree in any subject with at least 55% marks or equivalent letter grade will be the minimum eligibility for admission. A relaxation in marks of 5% or an equivalent relaxation of grade is allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non creamy layer, Delhi)/ differently abled categories (DOPT/UGC list).

The Ph.D programme in economics aims to provide a well-rounded and rigorous training in economics which will enable research scholars to address substantive question using economic theory and empirical methods. It aims to produce scholars alive to the multiplicity of disciplinary traditions in economics and the connections of these traditions to each other and to other branches of human knowledge.

Programme details

The normal duration of the programme is five years from the date of enrolment of the student. The programme is designed to be a full-time engagement for the students. No other degree will be awarded to students not successfully completing the programme. In the first-year students take the required course on research methods and elective courses in their areas of interest. Thereafter the student is required to produce a thesis presenting his/her original research with the help active supervision / mentoring from the programme faculty.

Research Advisory Committee

Each student admitted to the programme will be assigned a provisional Academic Advisor by the PhD programme faculty based on mutual interests of the students and respective faculty members. The provisional Academic Advisor will guide the student regarding the coursework to be undertaken based on the research interests of the student. The provisional Academic Advisor may or may not go on to become the Supervisor of the student with respect to his/her doctoral dissertation. At the end of the second semester, the students shall submit a thesis proposal and a Supervisor will be assigned to the student from among the full-time faculty members of the Economics group. Simultaneously, a Research Advisory Committee (RAC) will be formed for each student. The RAC will be chaired by the Supervisor and consist of at least two more faculty members from within or outside the University. Co‐supervisory arrangements are possible with experts and scholars outside the School who have the requisite academic credentials is possible with the permission of the Research Studies Committee (RSC) of the School in cases where such an arrangement would significantly enhance the quality of the scholar’s research.

Each student admitted to programme must complete 16 credits of coursework. Of this, 8 credits of compulsory Research Methods courses must be completed in the first semester. Of this, two credits to be constituted by a core introductory module ‘Research Methods-1: Methods and Approaches to Economics’ and the other six credits to be earned from the course ‘Research Methods2’ by choosing from different tracks of three research methods electives, which will cover Mathematical Methods, Historical Methods and Political Economy, and Econometrics. In the second semester, the student must complete two 4-credit elective courses. Of the two Elective courses, the student may opt for ‘at most one’ elective course from other programmes in the University based on their research interests and with consultation and approval of the Academic Advisor and PhD Programme Coordinator.

Entrance Admission to the Programme will be through a written test (50%), research proposal (25%) and interview (25%). The applicants are required to submit a written research proposal along with the application.

The research proposal (not exceeding 2500 words) clearly delineate his/her tentative research theme/focus/areas and should elaborate on the research questions comprehensively. The written test will evaluate the knowledge of Economics equivalent to the core courses in AUD’s M.A. Economics programme.

For the interview the candidate will be required to present her/his research proposal and would be expected to have a comprehensive understanding in the area chosen in the proposal. The selection process, and specially the interview, would emphasize innovative thinking ability and a genuine interest in research.

The alignment of the student’s research interest with the on-going thrust research areas of the faculty would also be taken into account. Applicants are requested to familiarise themselves with the research interests of the faculty through their profiles on the University website.

The Delhi School of Economics (DSE) was established in 1949 as a centre for excellence and advanced learning and research in the social sciences with Professor V.K.R.V. Rao as the Founder-Director and the Department of Economics of the University of Delhi as the nucleus.

Guided by his vision of India’s future and support from India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, Professor V.K.R.V. Rao envisioned establishing an institution devoted to research and teaching in economics and allied areas in the social sciences, which would also produce students who would play an important role in the economic development and social progress of the country. Such students were to be not only well trained in rigorous theory with a quantitative orientation but also have a wider perception of important social issues facing the country.

Professor V.K.R.V. Rao was deeply inspired by a well-known prayer of Swami Vivekananda to serve the poor and downtrodden which is inscribed in the Swami Vivekananda Hall in the Delhi School of Economics.

THE INSTITUTE

Information Technology integrates a wide spectrum of knowledge and skill ranging from the design of computer hardware, software systems, and telecommunication to the impact of information technology on society. To achieve this holistic goal the Institute of Informatics & Communication (IIC) was established in 1997 with the following objectives:

To serve as an inter-disciplinary centre for humanities, social sciences, pure and applied sciences and as a nodal point between university and various Institutions/Industries, related to communication and informatics.

• To conduct professional/socially relevant post-graduate teaching programmes, independently or in collaboration with various departments on different aspects on communication and informatics.
• To conduct research on various aspects of informatics and communication.

IIC has a panel of visiting professors and guest teaching faculty, comprising of highly qualified, experienced and distinguished professional from industry and academics. IIC is equipped with air-conditioned software laboratory with latest computers, licensed software, digital electronics and communication laboratories.

The learning approach at IIC includes classroom lectures, tutorials, project assignment and internet access. The students are encouraged to develop their skills and acquire theoretical knowledge and practical training in electronics, telecommunication and computer hardware and software. To improve the communication skills of students and to increase their confidence, students are required to make presentations with the help of visual aids during the fortnightly seminar sessions.

The selection process to enter the postgraduate programme is rigorous and the number of seats is restricted for ensuring quality education. The institute provides an excellent environment for learning and innovation.

The Department of Finance and Business Economics was created in 2019 by merging the two Departments, i.e., Department of Business Economics and Department of Financial Studies. An integral part of the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences and Humanities, the Department offers two flagship MBA programmes [MBA in Business Economics and MBA in Finance], two Ph.D programmes (Phd in Business Economics and Phd in Finance) as well as three Undergraduate courses running in colleges of the University of Delhi, viz., BA(Hons) Business Economics, Bachelor of Management Sciences [BMS] and BBA in Finance and Investment Analysis [BBA(FIA)]. Founded in the year 1973, the University of Delhi's Department of Business Economics pioneered the Masters Program in Business Economics, MBA (Business Economics) (erstwhile Masters in Business Economics). The programme combines the fundamentals of economic analysis with the practical aspects of policy and the business world. The institute is elated to announce it's 26th rank in IIRF (Indian Institutional Ranking Framework) in the best government B-schools across India.With its illustrious history of 50 years, the Department has a very strong alumni base gleaming like stars all over the corporate skyline. The Department has also fostered strong alliances with big corporate houses and over time has retained its position as their preferred recruitment destination. The programme in Business Economics is designed to meet the growing need for an analytical and quantitative approach to problem solving in the changing corporate world by the application of the latest techniques available in the fields of Economics and Business. The Department hosts a number of events along with an Annual Convention every year during which experts from different fields speak on contemporary issues related to the economy and business. The MBA (Finance) programme, earlier known as Master of Finance and Control, launched by the erstwhile Department of Financial Studies way back in 1987, was a foray into an uncharted territory in the Indian educational scenario. Based on the lines of MS (Finance) offered internationally, it was one of a kind niche course in finance, designed and developed to cater to the needs of the fast growing corporate world. Since its inception, the Department has been grooming financial professionals who are well – equipped to serve the dynamic Indian finance industry. Its flagship programme of MBA (Finance) (erstwhile Master of Finance and Control (MFC) and MBA (Financial Management)), is a niche course in finance designed and developed to cater to the ever – changing needs of the corporate world. The Department was recently welcomed into the CFA University Affiliation Program. Only academic institutions that embed a significant portion of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK) including the Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct—into their curriculum are eligible to participate in the University Affiliation Program. The Department has two Ph.D. Programs, i.e., Ph.D. in Business Economics and Ph.D. in Finance. The current research interests of the Business Economics Faculty include, Business Policy and Strategy, Industry Studies, Environmental and Resource Economics, Foreign Trade, Macro Economic Policy, Development Economics, International Economics, International Finance, International Marketing, Applied Econometrics, Energy Economics, Labour Economics, Urban Economics, and Economics of Climate Change. PhD in Economics

Given the current faculty strength and their interest, the Faculty of Economics is open to Ph.D. supervision in areas including heterogeneous agent models, behavioral macroeconomics, nonlinear dynamics, productivity and efficiency, and development.

Minimum Eligibility

A minimum of 17 years of education (12 years of schooling + a 3-year Bachelors degree and a 2-year Master’s degree or 4-year Bachelors degree + a 1 year Masters degree leading to an MA/M.Sc. degree in Economics or related specializations) from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate or an equivalent grade.

Through an Entrance Test and an Interview. The candidates will be shortlisted for the interview on the basis of their performance in the Entrance Test. Those shortlisted for the interview, will have to submit a written research proposal of not more than 1500 words clearly indicating a research problem along with the methodology they propose to employ. In this respect, candidates are advised to refer to the research interests of individual faculty members to identify the broad research expertise available in the faculty.

A minimum of 50% marks will have to be secured separately, in both the written test and the interview, in order to be eligible for admission. The final merit list will be prepared by totalling the marks obtained in both the phases.

Format of the Entrance Test Paper

• The duration of the Entrance Test will be 2 hours.
• The question paper will consist of 70 multiple choice questions covering the areas of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematical Methods, Statistical & Econometric Methods, and Development Economics.
• There will be no negative marking.
