Full-time PhD programme information
The full-time PhD track is a four-year programme offered at our institute in Maastricht, leading to a doctoral degree awarded by Maastricht University upon a successful defence of the dissertation. The institute currently hosts about 40 full-time PhD candidates, who are an integral part of the UNU-MERIT community. The programme provides advanced training in the knowledge and skills relevant to the UNU-MERIT research agenda.
The first year of the programme (September 2024 – June 2025) :
During the first year, PhD fellows are introduced to the PhD trajectory with a course programme of required and elective courses, taught by leading scholars of UNU-MERIT and our partner universities. These courses are taught in English and spread across two semesters, starting in September. The first semester consists of a programme of compulsory thematic courses , introducing the fellows to the core research areas of the Institute. During the second semester PhD fellows also follow elective methods courses, which permit them to develop the skills necessary to excel in the research area of their interest.
Throughout the first year, PhD fellows are supported in the further development of their PhD research proposal by interacting with staff members and potential supervisors. Upon successful defence of the proposal, a PhD agreement is developed with the supervisors and the PhD director, setting out the personal development and research plan and additional training needs for the following years.
After the first year (September 2025 onwards)
The first year is followed by three years of dissertation research and broader professional skill development. PhD fellows are encouraged to participate in seminars and other research activities organised at UNU-MERIT and to present their work in international high-level conferences. As part of their trajectories, PhD fellows can contribute to the Institute with activities related to their PhD, such as tutoring in the Masters’ programmes at the Institute, project-based research or other activities such as providing assistance to conferences and workshops, seminar organisation etc., depending on their longer-term career interests, within or outside academia.

Full course description
Twelve weeks are dedicated to the internship and to writing the bachelor’s thesis in the bachelor’s phase of the Biomedical Sciences programme. The internship focuses on becoming acquainted with research, meaning that the student gains experience in performing biomedical scientific research, preferably within an existing study. This (sub-)study is the basis for the written product, known as the bachelor's thesis. After submission of the thesis, the student is defending the thesis in an oral inquiry ('Defence'). The internship, the thesis and the defence are graded.
An internship within FHML (Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences) or MUMC+ (Maastricht University Medical Centre Plus) is considered an internal internship; any other internship is considered an external internship. The term 'FHML’ is used in the rest of this document to indicate both FHML and MUMC+ for the sake of brevity. An internship within FHML is supervised by the 'faculty supervisor’ i.e. the ‘first assessor’ (examiner). This supervisor must meet the requirements as stated in the exam regulations. Besides the faculty supervisor, there can be one or more daily supervisors. For internships outside FHML, a student has one or more external supervisors besides the faculty supervisor. The thesis will be assessed by the faculty supervisor and by an independent second assessor. The internship coordinator for the Bachelor Biomedical Sciences is the first contact person for the student for questions concerning the preparation and content of an internal or external internship. The coordinator will provide information on the internship by means of a lecture: the possibilities and impossibilities, the procedure, the conditions, etc.
Course objectives

PhD Defence Posthumus alumnus Patrick Naaktgeboren
On 11 January 2024, Posthumus alumnus Patrick Naaktgeboren successfully defended his PhD thesis ‘Private partnerships in early modern Antwerp (1621–1791) at Maastricht University. Promotores were Professor Bram Van Hofstraeten (Maastricht University) and Professor Jeroen Puttevils (University of Antwerp).
Patricks dissertation investigates private partnerships in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Antwerp (1621–1791) from both a legal historical and a socioeconomic perspective. Whereas the legal-historical part deals with the interaction between Antwerp customary law and learned legal literature (the ‘law in books’) related to business practices in the form of notarised and privately drafted agreements (the ‘law in practice’), the socioeconomic historical part focuses on the functions a partnership could fulfil in an early modern society. The aim of this dissertation is to gain more insight into the extent to which customary law affected business practices and the extent to which entrepreneurs adhered to the rules. Additionally, his dissertation challenges the categorisation often used in the literature whereby partnerships are grouped into ideal-types, such as general partnerships and limited partnerships. Finally, this dissertation analyses the underlying arguments for entrepreneurs to opt for a partnership. For this purpose, the city of Antwerp serves as an excellent case study because entrepreneurs were forced to adapt themselves continuously to geopolitical and socioeconomic developments in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
The PhD defense will also be broadcasted as livestream . The N.W. Posthumus staff congratulates Patrick with obtaining his PhD.
