Benefits of Honesty is the best policy

A famous quote as given by great personality is, “Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom”. It holds to be a positive and good feature due to its ability to build, motivate, and shape integral values in our life.

To develop moral components within us, we need to look for some important aspects of life, and Honesty is one among those. Honesty helps to develop positive attributes like truthfulness, discipline, moral integrity, kindness, and much more.

If we talk about the elimination part, we should be focused to overcome the lack of trust, steal, lying, cheating, greed, and some other important attributes. These aspects have no place when we talk about Honesty or being Honest.

  • Honest people are sincere, loyal, and trustworthy throughout their life. Honesty is valuable and is a habit of utmost importance.
  • Honesty promotes Authenticity. If you are honest, you will reflect on one’s feelings and thoughts. Certainly, honesty helps in knowing who you are. Therefore, one must be honest in self – expression.
  • To speak trust, a person requires a lot of courage. However, to fake out a lie, all you need is a jumble of words. This shows the difference and the courage one has to reveal to lead a part of Honesty.
  • Honesty removes fear from the Heart. It makes people confident and courageous. Speaking truth is a part of bravery. The one who lies is a coward. Also, speaking falsehood is a sign of low self – confidence.
  • Another feature to highlight is Maturity. Honesty certainly reflects the maturity of a person. An individual’s personality reflects positive signs if he practices honesty. Also, if you are mature enough, you will speak the trust without even hurting the feelings of others.
  • The discussion could not end if we forget about our self – peace i.e. the peace of mind. Being honest makes you feel free. An honest person reflects light-headed feelings. The reason is that he is not stuck in the stress and tensions of lying. Moreover, he does not have to deal with keeping secrets. All this feels makes him more relaxing.
  • Additionally, an individual’s reputation is also attached to the power of being Honest. He enhances his reputation and status in society if he practices honesty. Everyone seems to be fond of such an honest person. Also, it is very easy for an honest person to generate trust with other people.
  • Honesty keeps all the troubles away. A lie can provide some sort of temporary relief for an individual but in the long run, this is going to be his own fatal. Lies pull a person into more and more trouble. It even makes a person more habitual of being a liar. He/she continuously engages in speaking lies. One lie can lead to a hundred more lies.

Therefore, one must be truthful from the beginning. All this means is that one must stay honest in every situation that crosses the way.

Being honest will certainly result in high – quality friends. Also, with the high – quality you might even get to enjoy a long-lasting friendship with those who deserve. This friendship will be very close and strong which involves such individuals.

How to Avoid lying?

To stop lying is a tough path if you are a chronic liar. But it is not an impossible task. Although this will result in long-lasting fruitful results. One must not assume that others will not accept the truth.

Gather up your courage. This will help you to speak what you wish to and, in the end, you will end up saying all that is true. Though it requires courage but is certainly good. It is not the job of a faint-hearted person.

Try to think the other way. Do you wish to be lied? No, if you don’t consider this for yourself, how can you apply it for others. Assuming this way will structure you as being a remote thinker.

Before speaking the truth, always try to structure your words. Furthermore, always ensure not to speak rude or blunt.

The fact that honesty is a tough path in today’s world is completely acceptable. But keeping in mind the positive sides of Honesty, we must mould ourselves.

Honesty is the best policy, is of significant importance. In this dark word, Honesty is the light of hope.

To make honesty a practice, try to find situations where you can prove yourself of being honest. In some attempts, you might think of dropping the plan but sooner or later, you will enjoy the circumstances. Honesty is the power that prevails in the mind and soul of a person.

Therefore, honesty must prevail while the falsehood must be perished.

Honesty is the best policy – Essay 2

Honesty is a deserving praise for anyone in any walk of life. Dishonesty may bring instant success, but in the long run it will only bring disaster.

Indeed, honesty is the best policy. An honest person is admired and respected by others. Other people know that they can trust him or her and that he or she is a dependable and reliable person.

They know that even if they do something wrong, he or she will own up to it. He or she will never try to make excuses, blame others or tell lies.

When a person tells lies often, very soon, people realize that he or she is a terrible liar. They avoid him or her, and know that he or she is not to be trusted. They do not believe anything that he or she says, for it could be a lie.

People have no respect for such a person. Gandhiji always spoke the truth, even if he knew that he would be punished for what he said.

The guiding principles of his entire life were truth and ahimsa, and he taught this to everyone. Today he is revered and admired all over the world.

So it is up to us to decide which path we wish to take: the path of righteousness and honesty or the path of slyness and dishonesty.

Speaking truth is often difficult in many circumstances, but truth remains long lasting, a person is identified by his/her deeds.

What make a person remembered? His deeds, that how he/she was. It is human tendency to speak lies, but you often avoid speaking lies.

If a person catch you speaking lie, then he will never believe on you, truth as its own power, even sometimes you spoke lie, then also they will believe on you, because they knew that you speaks truth only.

Speaking Truth has a different impact.  It is better that you should follow, the famous proverb saying words, that “Honesty is the best policy” and it cannot be avoided.

Story on Honesty is the Best policy

We all have read a story about the woodcutter and mercury in school life.  The story was that, one day a woodcutter’s axe accidentally fell into a river. The river at the spot was deep and its current was swift.

The woodcutter tried hard but he could not find his axe. He was very sad. Mercury, the messenger of god, saw the sad woodcutter and took pity on him.

Don’t worry. I will bring you your axe, said Mercury to the wood cutter and dived into the river. Mercury came out of the river with an axe of gold and offered it to the woodcutter. The woodcutter said, “That is not mine. I can’t take it.”

Once again Mercury went down into the river and this time returned with an axe made of pure silver. The honest woodcutter said, “That is not my axe either.”

So Mercury dived into the river a third time. This time he brought with him a crude axe made of iron.

“That’s it,” cried the woodcutter joyfully and rushed to Mercury to take it.

Mercury was pleased with the poor man’s honesty. He gave him both the gold axe and the silver axe as a reward for his honesty.

Honesty builds strong relationships, allowing individuals to work together effectively and to build mutual respect and understanding.

Conversely, individuals who are caught in lies or deceitful behavior can experience significant damage to their reputation and may struggle to regain trust.
  • Personal Growth: Honesty is also important for personal growth and self-awareness. When individuals are honest with themselves and others, they are able to learn from their mistakes and to improve their behavior. They can identify areas where they need to grow and work on becoming the best version of themselves.

Long Essay On Why Honesty Is The Best Policy

Honesty is one of the most important values in our lives, yet it can be hard to tell the truth when we are faced with difficult decisions. This essay will explore why honesty is the best policy, and how it can benefit us both on a personal level and within society as a whole. By understanding why it is so important to always be honest, we can learn to make better choices and build stronger relationships.

Introduction

Honesty is the best policy because it leads to a life of integrity and character. When you are honest, you can be more trusted, and people will have more respect for you. Being honest also creates fewer problems in your life and relationships.

What is Honesty?

Honesty is the quality of being honest, truthful and sincere. It is a virtue that is essential for good relationships. Honesty is the cornerstone of trust, without which relationships would crumble.

Being honest means being truthful about what you say and do, and not trying to deceive or mislead others. It also means being open and authentic in your communication, and not hiding your true feelings or intentions. When you are honest with others, they can trust you and feel confident in your relationship.

Honesty is important in all aspects of life – at home, at work, in your personal relationships, and in the wider community. By being honest, you build trust and respect from those around you. You also set an example for others to follow.

Being honest may not always be easy, but it is always the right thing to do.

Benefits of Being Honest

There are many benefits to being honest. For one, honesty builds trust. People are more likely to trust someone who is honest with them. This can lead to better relationships and more opportunities in life.

Honesty also makes you a better person. When you’re honest, you take responsibility for your actions and words. You own up to your mistakes and learn from them. This makes you a stronger and more principled person.

Being honest also shows that you have integrity. Integrity is a quality that is highly respected by others. It’s a sign of strength of character and an indication that you can be trusted.

Finally, honesty is the best policy because it’s the right thing to do. It’s simply the truth and it’s what we should all strive for in our lives.

The Negative Effects of Lying

Lying has many negative effects that can be felt both short-term and long-term. In the short-term, lying can lead to feelings of guilt, shame, and anxiety. These feelings can be compounded if the lie is discovered, leading to further embarrassment and a loss of trust. In the long-term, habitual lying can damage relationships, both personal and professional. It can also lead to depression and anxiety, as well as a general sense of mistrust and dissatisfaction with life.

Repercussions of Dishonesty

Dishonesty has far-reaching consequences that can destroy personal relationships, damage your reputation, and jeopardize your career. When you are dishonest, people will no longer trust you and they will avoid you. Your reputation will suffer and you will have a hard time regaining people’s trust. In the workplace, dishonesty can cost you your job and damage your professional credibility.

Examples of Honesty in Society

There are many examples of honesty in society. One example is when a person tells the truth on their taxes. This is an act of honesty because they are not trying to hide anything or cheat the government. Another example is when someone volunteers their time to help others. This is an honest act because they are not doing it for any personal gain, but instead they are helping others out of the goodness of their hearts. Finally, another example of honesty in society is when someone returns lost property to its rightful owner. This is an honest act because the person could have kept the property for themselves, but instead they did the right thing and returned it to its rightful owner.

Honesty is the key to success and leads to a better, more satisfying life. It might be difficult to live by this principle all of the time, but it’s important for us to strive for integrity in our actions and words. Honesty should always be our priority when making decisions or engaging with others. If we are honest, not only will those around us benefit from our truthfulness, but so will ourselves as we gain trustworthiness and respect from those who value such qualities. Ultimately, honesty is the best policy because it can lead to positive outcomes within yourself and your relationships with others.

You were undoubtedly trained never to lie by your parents, who preached the importance of telling the truth. Your partner states that the most important thing is, to be honest.

But, according to studies, people do a lot of things wrong when it comes to deceit, truth-telling, and trust, and that, if mastered, lying the right way may actually help develop relationships, trust, and businesses.

You are also more likely to be lied to (and told to lie) than you realize imagine your mother telling you to tell your grandmother how much you enjoyed her food, or you providing incomplete feedback to a coworker.

LYING CAN BE JUSTIFIED IN THE FOLLOWING SCENARIOS

If you are Looking out for Someone's Best Interests:

There are many examples of lying being harmful, and the most harmful lies are those that promote your self-interest at the expense of others.

According to a study, "prosocial" lies—falsehoods intended to benefit others—can help people create trust.

Just keep in mind that lies are most effective when they are not self-serving. It is one thing to tell your friend he or she looks beautiful before a date to boost their self-esteem. However, be warned, saying it solely to push your friend out of the door because you are already late - that might drive you into a selfish zone.

If There is Not Enough Time to Make a Modification:

Let's say your mate inquires about how you think he or she looks shortly before coming on stage for a speaking engagement, or just before reaching the podium, about what you think of the speech. Consider whether the person has the time to react to the information and control the issue, even if you see a stain on his or her dress or think the speech may be improved.

You might accept deception if there is nothing your partner can do to improve or change things right now. As there is nothing he or she can do at the time, lying in this sense is typically comprehended as something which is benefiting the person at the receiving end.

If your significant other can react to the knowledge, however, honesty is the superior option.

If the Person is Not Close to you:

Deception that is mild and well-intentioned can be even more effective in long-distance relationships. Honesty is a lot more perilous in more competitive equations or first interactions, and it can damage relationships and reduce the amount of trust. That is because neither party knows the other's genuine motives, and they may ask aloud, "Is this individual trying to undermine me?"

Still, if you're inclined to provide candid comments to a distant acquaintance or a buddy of a friend, go ahead. Providing the truth while being benevolent—something along the lines of, "I truly want you to succeed, so I am giving you this feedback."

Close friendships, on the other hand, can foster a greater appreciation for candor, and confessing to friends is probably not as horrible as you think. We consistently underestimate how difficult it will be, to tell the truth.

It is noticed that often simple topics that we have been hearing and writing about for many years are the ones that become the most difficult to write. One such topic is   'Honesty is the Best Policy' IELTS essay. Here is how you can write an engaging and advanced essay on it.

Table of Contents

Honesty is the best policy essay: sample 1, essay on honesty is the best policy: sample 2, more essays samples to explore:.

The origin of this proverb  honesty is the best policy can be attributed to Sir Edwin Sandys. He was an official of Virginia Company who had used the phrase in one of his writings in the 1500s. It is an irrefutable fact that modernization and evolution are all by-products of universal progression. Moreover, honesty, which was very common in ancient times, is now as rare as hens’ teeth. In consonance with this, it can be easily apprehended that the breakthrough has not only encouraged external evolutions but has also blazingly impacted the consciences of beings.

The rareness of honesty cannot modify its ultimate consequence- actualizing an ethical character. Nature functions on the mechanism of giving and taking. Every development does have a cost, as the progression of technology leads to more cyber crimes. Universal progression has not only evolved individuals in terms of lifestyles but has also affected their mindsets and the basic values being rendered to them. The traits which were seen as unlikely earlier, like greed, dishonesty, etc., are now predominant.

Selfishness is the trait that has turned ways around even for honest personalities. It has become complex to understand the fact that honesty is ideally engraved, even if you are selfish. It is time to perceive how being honest will make your life full of grace, gratitude, and gratefulness. Keep the 3G's handy by being honest.

Salient benefits of preaching honesty:

  • Builds an established and didactic character,
  • Augments the persona of a “credible” person,
  • Attracts quality acquaintances rather than quantity,
  • Backs in being more prudent and disciplined,
  • Guides to be accountable for own, etc.

The ways for showcasing honesty can be tweaked, but in the long run, honesty must be practiced as a sole medium of paving the way through.

The essay topic is a resurgence of the old proverb reminding me what honesty means and what ceaseless good it brings. To me, honesty lies in everything that does not pinch my conscience. I feel it is cosmic and empowers individuals to build a bright future.

From the teachings of the past to the subsequent action, honesty was prevalent. It is for this reason that, as a child, I never experienced or witnessed the consequence of delinquency. Being true was colossal, and another way round was nefarious. Moral science was a perpetual life skill and, surprisingly, never seemed boring. I felt pride in speaking the truth, even when I got no rewards.

As opposed to that, kind, fragile, loving, gentle, honest, and likes of these emotions are weak words in the epoch that relies on quantification. Today, fastidiousness and other capricious ways, such as an over-exposure to the internet and the quantity of 'followers', have become the marshal fact to kindle happiness. Just like 'life' today is replaced with 'trend', the word 'Honesty' is often interchangeably used with expedience, making 'honesty is the best policy' no more than an obsolete idiom.

Honesty can be of many types and is used subjectively. Any modification that is untrue can be categorized as dishonesty. For example, using filters for online dating is also a form of cheating as you are not showing your real self; although, people don't find using the tiara or flowers as filters dishonest. Hence the word 'expedience' is more apt than using 'Honesty'. At the same time, a dog showering love on its caretaker is an honest embodiment.

Honesty reflects prudence, the integrity of character, and morality. And if what you are doing shows any of these, you have thought back for good!

Set 1: Essay On Honesty Is the Best Policy

Honesty is a rare commodity in the world today. Most people prefer the easy way. out which sometimes deviates from the path of honesty, for to be completely honest means facing hardships and obstacles.

Nothing succeeds like success, and many people believe it is the “end result’ that matters-not the means. Therefore, even if you acquire success, money, position and respect by being just a little out of line-it doesn’t really matter much.

But remember-anything acquired by incorrect and dishonest’ means will never last-what will sustain is honesty, and work done honestly.

In the world of today, honesty is regarded as a hindrance in achieving success rapidly. It may appear that the ‘smooth, worker’ who knows exactly how to manipulate gets ahead, while the honest not so cunning person gets left way behind-but it’s like the old tale of the tortoise and the rabbit. Slow and steady and honestywins the race.

In the end, it’s not what others judge you by that counts- it’s what you judge yourself as. It’s how you feel about your actions and deeds-if you are one with them and feel you have achieved your goal HONESTLY-that’s all that matters.

Set 2: Essay On Honesty Is the Best Policy

To be honest one has to be true in word and deed. An honest person tells the truth. He is just in what he thinks. He will never think of cheating anybody else. He always keeps the promises he makes.

We see a lot of dishonesty around us. We see people who are dishonest quite happy after doing dishonest acts such as telling lies, cheating, stealing and being unjust. But as soon as their acts are miserable.

discovered they get punished and become In school also we see the same thing. When a boy steals his friend’s new watch he is happy. But as soon as the teacher finds out and punishes him, and he cries and becomes very sad. A friend of mine once got zero out of ten in a spelling test. He quietly put a one before the zero. The teacher saw it the next day and called for his parents.

Everybody was very angry with him for his dishonesty. He was very sorry for cheating. Being dishonest may make a person happy for a short while. But he is afraid inside. He is afraid of being caught. Truth never stays hidden for long. It comes out one way or another and dishonesty gets punished.

An honest person has nothing to fear. He never tells lies. He is respected and loved by all. Dishonesty brings it with unhappiness and loneliness. Honesty is therefore the best policy and we should all be honest and be happy always.

Set 3: Essay On Honesty Is the Best Policy

Generally, people say that honesty is the best policy. It means if we want to succeed in life we should be honest and straightforward. Nothing succeeds like honesty in life. It is possible that dishonesty may be successful for some time, but in the long run honesty is sure to succeed.

This can be seen if we consider the cases of students and businessmen. The student who tries to copy in the examination hall may get some more marks than he would have otherwise got. But he learns a lesson to neglect honest work and in the long run, he is sure to suffer the consequences of dishonesty, as he will find himself below the standard.

Let us examine the case of a student who tries to use foul means in the examination hall and is caught red handed by the invigilator. The least punishment he gets is that the paper is snatched from him and he is asked to promise not to copy again. When he reaches home, he gets rebuke from his father and mother. In the company of his friends, he is put to shame. When he goes to his class for his daily lessons, he is hated by the teacher and the principal. For a single act of dishonest deed, he finds the whole of the little world against him. He comes to repentance. But it is too late.

If a businessman is found to be dishonest even in a single transaction, people try to avoid him. His sales goes down. People refuse to believe him even when his prices are the least. He loses his customers and goodwill. There are only two courses open to him, either to wind up the business or to be honest.

The effect of dishonesty is much the same in the case of clerks, teachers, government servants and others. It is possible that a man may become rich by adopting dishonest means. But he generally squanders the money. He again adopts dishonest means to earn more.. In this way, his whole life become a vicious circle.

It is necessary for us to be honest if we want to succeed in life. Dishonesty leads to failure. A dishonest person is bound to fall in the long run. Without hard work and honesty none has succeeded in the world so far.

Honesty is The Best Policy

8 Best Essays on “Honesty is The Best Policy”

Essay No. 01

It is possible that dishonesty may succeed for a short time, but honesty is sure to succeed better in the long run. This may be seen considering the career of students in schools and colleges, and of men engaged in the business of life. The student who cheats in an examination may, if he escapes detection, gain a few marks more than he would otherwise have got. But what is the probable result? He learns thereby to trust to dishonest means of passing his further examinations, and neglects hard work, the only sure means of success, Guess, even if his dishonesty remains undetected, he is likely to be outstripped by his more honest rival, and in addition, he exposes himself to the risk of an ignominious conviction, which will ruin his reputation and surely wound the hearts of parents and friends.

The effects of dishonesty are much the same in the case of clerks, merchants, government servants, and others. They may suddenly make themselves rich by dishonest means. But wealth so obtained is as a rule rapidly squandered, and to regain resource is likely to be had again to new acts of dishonesty. Thus the dishonest man lives all through his life in continual dread that his misdeeds may at any moment be revealed in the light of the day. Success at the beginning of his career only tempts him to become corrupt on a larger scale, and the end is generally disgrace and punishment.

So far we have been considering the question merely from the point of view of material success, and have seen that the dishonest man is very unlikely to succeed in life. But even if by some rare chance he should manage to escape detection to the end and die famous and wealthy, he must nevertheless all through his life suffer pain through fear of detection and consciousness of his own baseness. Had he been an honest man, he would probably have won still more wealth and honor in the eyes of the world and would have been spending the reproaches of a guilty conscience.

According to religious preachers and moralists, a man should be honest. He should be straightforward and just in his dealings with others, whatever the consequences of his conduct. He should not only resist the temptation to get rich quickly by being dishonest but be ready to face the suffering and loss that may be caused by honesty. This is the point of view of morality. The proverb, however, recommends honesty not as a moral ideal, but as a practical policy. We are called upon, to be honest, not because it is moral t0 be so, but because it is profitable to be so.

From one point of view, it is indeed true that honesty is the best policy. Consider, for example, a shopkeeper who, in order to get easy and quick profits, sells things at higher prices and cheats his customers in other ways. He may seem to prosper for some time, but, sooner or later, his customers are bound to see through his tricks and cease to patronize him. On the other hand, an honest shopkeeper is likely to flourish gradually and steadily, attracting more and more customers because of his reputation for honesty. It is true that several black marketers and they’re like have amassed huge fortunes. But they have to spend large chunks of their illicit gains on trying to prevent the detection of their crimes. Besides, they live in constant dread of being found out. It is generally true that dishonesty creates more problems than it solves.

`Honesty is the best policy is a national proverb of the British. It reflects their practical character. The British are nothing if not practical, and this quality enabled them to found a far-flung empire. In the colonies which they ruled they tried to be as honest and trustworthy as possible; at least they succeeded in creating this image of themselves in the minds of many people. If the British as a nation are affluent and influential today, it is in no small measure due to the fact that they try to live up to their national proverb.

Honesty is a very rare quality. Therefore it is greatly valued. It teaches us to be fair and square in our dealings. An honest person is not only respected but also trusted in society. He makes big gains and carves a place in the hearts of people around him. A man may become rich overnight by dishonest means but that richness does not last long. Honesty makes man self-confident and bold. He does not feel afraid of anybody. He moves about with his head held high in the air. Honesty is a long-termed investment. On the other dishonesty is a vice. It breeds corruption. It causes a moral fall of the people. The fruit of dishonesty is bitter. Dishonest persons suffer mentally. Outwardly they may look happy but inwardly they are not at peace with themselves. They are not contented with what they have. Their sins haunt them. No doubt the number of dishonest persons is far greater than those of honest persons, honesty still remains the best policy.

Without honesty, we would be termed characterless. Honesty is one of the building blocks of good character and character is what establishes who we are and what we are going to achieve. Honesty is the cornerstone of character. If one is found wanting in honesty, he will be found lacking in character as well.

Honesty is not always the easiest way out of a situation. However, for the brave-hearted who do not seek ways -out of situations, it is the only way to deal with a situation or a crisis. Often being honest can mean coming under the wrath of others. There might be the fear of a backlash but one must keep in mind that in the end truth always prevails and honesty is the best policy. It might not be the easiest thing: being honest, but it is the only thing to be.

Sometimes when faced with dire consequences one is inclined to be dishonest because it takes courage, to be honest. While dishonesty may provide an easy exit out of a sticky situation, it is just a matter of time before the lies catch up. When that happens, you lose your credibility and people mistrust you forever. A politician who fails to deliver on the promises he has made to the people during the election campaign loses the people’s faith and stands to lose the elections the next time around. It is difficult to trust someone you have lost faith in.

There are lies and then there are white lies. White lies are perceived as lies that are harmless hence people are often prone to using them. Being honest is difficult especially when you have something to lose like maybe a job, a promotion, the love and respect of a loved one. Taking the help of a white lie seems the easier way out. However, one lie leads to another, and, before long you are entangled in a web of lies that you find increasingly difficult to come out of. Honesty may be a difficult virtue to maintain but it is the only right thing to do.

However, situations don’t always call for brutal honesty. If a friend has bad breath, there is no reason to embarrass her with the truth by telling her she has bad breath. Situations like this, when the truth can hurt someone’s feelings call for prudence. A white lie said at this point to avoid hurting the friend’s feelings would not be in the best interests of the friend. The best way to deal with this situation would be to play down the brutality of the truth. Instead of outright saying,” hey your breath smells awful’ one could instead say “hey nothing a little mint won’t cure”.

The truth however hard to say must be adhered to always. In the long run, it is the best policy. Over a period of time, one will gain a reputation for being honest. And this will prove to be the building block of success. An honest person will be sought for his opinion. An honest man will always receive more responsibility at home and at work. One must remember always that, “To err is human and to forgive divine”. So when you have erred coming clean is the only option. You may be punished for it, you might have to bear the consequences of it, but if you are honest you will earn the forgiveness and respect of those around you. Honesty is undoubtedly the best policy.

The wise man who coined the saying that ‘honesty is the best policy, was in every way a very sensible person. The use of the word ‘policy’ gave this saying flexibility, in that a person during the course of his life could adapt different ways if he felt that honesty was not beneficial to his interests. A policy is changeable, unlike a principle that is not. You cannot change the principle even if it causes loss. You suffer and even lay down your life for a principle. On the other hand, policy 1s just a matter of convenience. It is more businesslike and more inclined to think in terms of profit and loss.

Should then honesty restrict itself to just being a policy or should it be made into a principle 2. The answer to this question is that honesty should be made into a principle of life. In the long run, honesty proves to be the best wealth. A person possessing it acquires the strength of character and high esteem in the eyes of society.

Honesty is also necessary for real happiness. Dishonesty may bring wealth and influence but it can never make a person happy. At no point in his life will a dishonest person be able to free himself from the consequences of his actions. Hence he will never be truly happy and content. Fear of being caught and punished for his dishonest acts haunts him and he is never totally free from it.

Similarly, a public servant needs honesty. You cannot become a great leader without honesty. This virtue gives him the strength to do his duty towards the citizens of the country. As a dishonest leader, you may become rich and powerful. But there is every possibility that your actions will catch up with you and make you suffer. The cloud of dishonesty may hide the Sun of honesty for a period of time. It cannot however hide it forever. This proves the greatness of honesty from which no one can escape.

It has been truly said, “Honesty is the best policy”. We should always be sincere in the work we do. It is, nevertheless, very difficult to accept honest means of livelihood. It is frequently seen that people generally take up unfair ways to become rich. On the other hand, those who pursue the path of honesty are frequently seen stressed in life to satisfy their meager needs. All these might have a bad effect on the nerves of honest people and they might take to other ways to earn by unfair ways. But, we should keep in mind that money earned by unfair means never brings joy.

A man who adopts truthful ways to earn his livelihood might spend a life of poverty but he is always contented. He is far superior to an affluent person who has collected a lot of wealth by taking up fraudulent means. Gandhi Ji always preached to us to lead a happy and contented life by being truthful. At present, our society has been trapped by fraudulent people, who in just a few years want to become rich.

Thus, we can see it is really difficult to lead an honest life among the fraudulent people all around. In spite of so many fraudulent people, honest men still thrive and lead their life with honest means of livelihood .

Trust and faith are two important virtues essential for healthy human relationships. That is so, because of our many limitations. Despite the remarkable progress, we have made so far in acquiring knowledge, much of our potential is unknown to us, and many of our shortcomings remain unconquered. We can be easily deceived, and since deceptions cannot be easily detected beforehand, they create friction in our relationships with others. Moreover, deceptions undermine our sense of security and threaten our very survival. Honesty and sincerity are the qualities necessary to safeguard ourselves against insecurity and should indeed be the foundations of our relations with others.

Honesty is the Best Policy Essay

Honesty is the Best Policy Essay 300 Words

Honesty refers to the state of being truthful in every case. A person who always speaks truth is the one that possesses good moral character. Moral values need to be inculcated from the very beginning of life so that we can emerge as better people and prove to be beneficial to society.

Always maintaining decorum, sticking to rules and guidelines, speaking the truth and being disciplined are some of the characteristics of an honest person. Therefore, this famous quotation “honesty is the best policy” states that it is better, to tell the truth than to lie even if it is hard to do that. Parents teach this phrase to their children from their childhood so that they should realize the importance of truth in life.

However, nowadays, we can see how people are deceiving each other for their own mean purposes. Many corrupt officials are an example of dishonesty towards the country. Even children are being dishonest to their parents due to lack of communication and understanding. Hence, it’s the need of an hour to revive this old phrase into the hearts of the people so that they can stop doing activities which are harmful to them as well as for the nation. Honesty is a precious facet of one’s life and we should always try to stick to honesty in every phase of life.

In conclusion, maintaining honesty and integrity are vital to living a happy and regret-free life. It teaches us to remain kind, truthful and punctual towards our work and personal life. It also makes us authentic and ethical in different stages of life. Whether you are a school going lad or an adult, honesty is required everywhere to help you succeed and live a peaceful life. Honesty makes you confident and courageous and strengthens your power to face challenges of life.

Beautyland , Marie-Helene Bertino

narrative essay about honesty is the best policy

Much like a certain lord and savior, the heroine of Marie-Helene Bertino’s strange, engrossing third novel is at once fully human and entirely otherworldly. Born in 1970s Philadelphia and raised by a penniless single mother, Adina Giorno also happens to be a space alien who communicates via fax with extraterrestrial overlords who’ve sent her to report on earth’s society. Beautyland tells the bittersweet story of her similarly contradictory life, a regular existence punctuated by flashes of the extraordinary. Underlying these paradoxes is the poetic observation that there’s nothing more human than the experience of gazing out at a planet full of incomprehensible people who look just like you and deciding that you must be from outer space. —Judy Berman

James , Percival Everett

narrative essay about honesty is the best policy

In James, Percival Everett finds new insight in retelling Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from a different point of view—that of Jim, who is enslaved by one of Huck’s guardians. Everett follows the original’s episodic adventures on the Mississippi river, but sticks with Jim as he escapes the plantation to find his wife and child. In reimagining the story through Jim, the author adds to it, imparting depth through keen observation and sharp humor as he exploits the familiar tale to skewer American racism and social expectations. The reader gets the inside view of James in his full, varied self, and how he hides his erudition and humanity to play an amenable caricature for the white people around him. With Everett’s deft writing, this playful, pointed novel is a commanding and captivating read. — Merrill Fabry

Last year, a climate scientist named Patrick Brown, along with seven co-authors, published a study in the journal Nature about the connections between wildfires in California and global warming.

But a month later, Dr. Brown confessed in a Free Press article that he had framed his research not just to reflect the truth, but to fit within what he described as the climate alarmist storyline preferred by prestigious journals in the United States.

Why We Wrote This

Despite a wide consensus about climate change, many people remain skeptical. Can climate scientists earn back the public’s trust?

Climate advocates skewered Dr. Brown as being everything from unhinged to unethical. But he says it was only fair for him to delve into his own decision-making process as part of an honest critique of the culture within his field.

“I think there is a certain section of the population that has way too little trust in climate science, and then a section that has too much trust in a perception of what climate science is, that it’s this all-encompassing thing that tells global society what to do,” he says.

His experience is illustrative of how difficult it can be to maintain a more nuanced stance in today’s crisis-driven world of climate science.

“On a fundamental level, some amount of skepticism is appropriate, wanted, in science,” says Lauren Kurtz, executive director of the Climate Science Legal Defense Fund. “At the same time, I think that approach has been weaponized by people who want to dispute the scientific reality of climate change, sometimes from a very disingenuous perspective.”

In late August of last year, a climate scientist named Patrick Brown, along with seven co-authors, published a study in the journal Nature about the connections between wildfires in California and global warming.

Their paper was, in many ways, standard fare for the prestigious journal. It took a deep dive into environmental measurements; it used machine learning and evaluated complex climatic comparisons; it concluded that climate change was making wildfires more extreme.

It was also, Dr. Brown claimed publicly just a month later, untrustworthy.

Dr. Brown confessed in a Free Press article that he had framed his research not just to reflect the truth, but to fit within what he described as the climate alarmist storyline preferred by prestigious journals in the United States. He did this, he says, by intentionally focusing only on climate as a factor in wildfires, and not on the myriad other causes that contribute to the blazes consuming ever more land across the country.

It wasn’t that he was hiding anything, or that the research was wrong. It was just that the paper was deliberately focused in one narrow direction – the direction most likely, he claimed, to capture the attention of journal editors.

The formula for getting published, he wrote, “is more about shaping your research in specific ways to support pre-approved narratives than it is about generating useful knowledge for society.” And when it comes to climate science, he alleged, that preapproved narrative is that “climate change impacts are pervasive and catastrophic.”

Almost immediately, people who questioned the reality of climate change began citing Dr. Brown’s essay as “proof” that global warming is a hoax, perpetrated by academics consumed by a “woke” agenda.

narrative essay about honesty is the best policy

The reaction was also swift within his field. The editors of Nature denied any bias and said that Dr. Brown had “poor research practices” and was “highly irresponsible.” They pointed to a number of articles that seemed to go against Dr. Brown’s assertions. And climate advocates skewered Dr. Brown as being everything from unhinged to unethical. His words, they said, would bolster what watchdog groups say is a new wave of climate denialism.

“We’ll be hearing echoes of Brown’s impulsively emotional blurt for a very long time,” wrote Doug Bostrom on the website Skeptical Science, which was created to debunk climate misinformation. “Brown has caused durable material harm to climate progress. It’s to no good end.”

But privately, Dr. Brown insists, fellow researchers have expressed sympathy. He was never questioning the reality of climate change itself, he says, or its importance. Neither was he making up data or violating academic standards – nothing about his paper, he points out, has required a retraction. He was just pointing out a place where he saw the scientific community not living up to science’s own ideals.

Dr. Brown, co-director of the Climate and Energy Team at The Breakthrough Institute, a research center in Berkeley, California, has long been fascinated by the way research transforms into widespread knowledge. How does the stew of individuals and institutions and media each combine in various ways to form popular understandings?

He and his co-authors had decided to focus on the real impacts of climate factors on wildfires. But they had also decided to not focus on some of the other factors that have equally real impacts. These include land-use choices and varying forest management policies.

Their findings were sound. But as he reflected on this work, Dr. Brown says, he had to admit that he chose to focus on climate instead of other factors because he believed that’s what would make his study more likely to be published.

He thought it was only fair for him to delve into his own decision-making process as part of an honest, and important, critique of the culture within his field.

A more nuanced stance, however, can be difficult to maintain in today’s crisis-driven world of climate science.

narrative essay about honesty is the best policy

Indeed, this is a field where researchers face increasing attacks from politicians, organizations funded by the fossil fuel industry, and social media trolls. In other words, tension is high, and, many believe, the stakes are even higher.

“Deniers and skeptics say climate scientists are alarmist. We are not alarmist enough,” says Astrid Caldas, senior scientist for community resilience at the Union of Concerned Scientists. “If we could, we would scream to the four winds and say, ‘People, wake up! Things are not looking good.’”

But if climate science doesn’t make space for alternative viewpoints, it risks its foundational ideals of open inquiry and debate and rigorous, evidence-based critiques, some analysts say. And while there is an important distinction between asking honest, skeptical questions and purveying false narratives, it’s not always crystal clear where that line lies.

Questioning mainstream assumptions about climate change without denying its import or reality – “threading the needle,” as Dr. Brown puts it – can be a much-maligned path.

“I don’t think he was prepared for the anger and vitriol,” says Roger Pielke Jr., professor at the University of Colorado Boulder. Dr. Pielke has been labeled a climate change denier himself – a characterization he vehemently rejects. “He didn’t say anything wrong. All of us think about, how do we construct our papers so we have the best chance of getting published? The climate space is no different.”

The role of uncertainty in climate science

Except, many scientists insist, it is different.

There are few scientific topics so complicated, with so many potential impacts on humanity, as climate change. And there are few areas of science that have been so undermined.

Science historians often point to the late 1800s as the moment when researchers began recognizing that the Earth was warmer than it should be, and when they began connecting this to carbon dioxide, one of the main gases that trap heat within the atmosphere.

Since then, scientists have repeatedly measured and analyzed the Earth’s rising temperatures, as well as the impact of increasing greenhouse gases, and in particular CO 2 , which is released when humans burn fossil fuels. They have found, with increasing precision and surety, that the emissions of the modern world have indeed heated the Earth.

This is a point worth emphasizing, since this is as close to fact as one often gets in science. We know the Earth is getting hotter. We know human activity has played a significant role.

“It has as solid evidence as gravity,” says Benjamin Houlton, dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University. There are valid scientific debates about the consequences of this heating, he says. “The uncertainty is pretty significant; there’s nothing settled about the future” – but only a scattered handful of outliers still argues against the overwhelming evidence that the planet is warming.

narrative essay about honesty is the best policy

Still, those skeptics have had an outsize impact on Americans’ trust in climate science. And that may be intentional, some argue.

In their widely acclaimed 2010 book, “Merchants of Doubt,” Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway detail how a small group of scientists denied connections between smoking and lung cancer, sulfur dioxide and acid rain, and aerosols and ozone damage. Their goal was often to slow down government regulation. Today, some of these same scientists have been connected to climate denial movements funded by intensely free-market, anti-environmentalist organizations.

The partisanship around global warming has eased some in recent years. More than half of younger Republicans say the government is doing too little to reduce the effects of climate change, according to the Pew Research Center. But the difference between Republicans and Democrats is still stark.

Gavin Schmidt is a NASA climate scientist who in 2021 served as the agency’s acting senior adviser on climate. He says that many of his colleagues were taken aback when partisanship crashed into their profession.

When he got his Ph.D. in the early 1990s, he recalls, the question of global warming was politically salient, but the scientists studying it were, well, scientists. They were individuals interested in the fascinating but seemingly esoteric qualities of clouds and dinosaurs, of ice cores and carbon. “It was a bit of a niche thing,” he says. He and his colleagues were happy to work in the lab and the field, focused on calculations and peer-reviewed journals. For the most part, they didn’t see public debate and policymaking as part of their world.

And then that started to change.

In 1995, a controversy exploded around the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s second assessment report, which for the first time stated that “the balance of evidence suggests a discernible human influence on global climate.”

Free market think tanks and policymakers, along with some scientists connected to these groups, accused climate modeler Ben Santer, a co-author of the report, of professional dishonesty, saying he skewed his research for political reasons, The allegations soon became personal and increasingly threatening. At one point the scientist found a dead rat left on his doorstep. It didn’t matter that Dr. Santer and his colleagues repeatedly debunked the accusations. The harassment still remained virulent.

narrative essay about honesty is the best policy

In 1998, a scientist named Michael Mann published a graph in Nature magazine shaped like a hockey stick – illustrating the exponential heating of the Earth over the last century compared with the previous millennium. A few years later, Al Gore used that graph in his narration of the climate change documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth.”

Dr. Mann also began receiving death threats. Congressional leaders accused him of fraudulent research practices. In 2012, the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a libertarian think tank, published a blog post comparing the investigation into Dr. Mann’s work to the investigation into former football coach Jerry Sandusky, who was convicted of sexually abusing children. (Dr. Mann sued the bloggers for defamation. This year he won a judgment of $1 million.)

Climate change skeptics, occasionally funded by fossil fuel interests, began focusing their ire on other scientists as well. “I remember when I first started getting attacked and people started putting down lawsuits and [Freedom of Information Act] requests and insulting me in public,” Dr. Schmidt says. “That was a big shock.”

In 2011, a group of climate-conscious entrepreneurs, legal scholars, and scientists decided to fight back, creating the Climate Science Legal Defense Fund to protect climate scientists from threats and censorship.

Today, that group is busier than ever, says Lauren Kurtz, its executive director. Her team of lawyers is defending scientists who say they have faced governmental backlash for their research, or who have been disciplined by academic departments for speaking publicly about what they see as the harms of climate change. Sometimes, online abuse of climate scientists has expanded into real-world intimidation, says Ms. Kurtz, who regularly passes along information to police departments.

narrative essay about honesty is the best policy

It is in this world that Dr. Brown wrote his article.

“On a fundamental level, some amount of skepticism is appropriate, wanted, in science,” she says. “You want scientists to look at each other’s research and try to pull it apart; you want people to double-check and triple-check it, re-create it. ... At the same time, I think that approach has been weaponized by people who want to dispute the scientific reality of climate change, sometimes from a very disingenuous perspective.”

From honest critique to hoax

This is where it gets tricky. Because what’s disingenuous to one person can be an honest critique to another. And the newest wave of climate disinformation has helped undermine the trust needed to decipher between the two.

A decade ago, the primary claim by climate skeptics was that the Earth is not actually warming. Some still take this line. For instance, a documentary released this spring called “Climate: The Movie” calls global warming a hoax.

Yet for the most part, the denialist arguments have shifted. In January, the Center for Countering Digital Hate published a report on what it described as a movement from “Old Denial” to “New Denial.” After analyzing thousands of hours of social media content, for example, researchers found that 70% of denial material on YouTube focused either on attacking climate solutions as unworkable, or on attacking the integrity of climate scientists and their research.

“People who want to stop action on climate change have changed their strategy from denying that climate change is real or man-made, to saying that it is real but there is no hope, that the solutions don’t work or the scientists themselves don’t really understand it. None of which is true,” says the group’s CEO, Imran Ahmed. “It shows their cynicism, in that they’ve pivoted so easily from claiming that climate change is fake to, ‘Climate change is real, but there’s no way to fix it,’” he says.

narrative essay about honesty is the best policy

Many researchers say this sort of denialism has been effective. Nearly 80% of Americans say they trust medical scientists, and around 75% say the same for scientists in general, according to the Pew Research Center. But only a third of Americans think climate scientists understand “very well” whether climate change is happening. Only a quarter say climate scientists really understand the effects of climate change on extreme weather events, or know what we should do about it.

“We’re crashing on the rocks of disinformation,” says Brenda Ekwurzel, climate scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists.

But the notion of “disinformation,” like any idea, can be debatable. Dr. Pielke, for example, is listed on the Skeptical Science website as a spreader of disinformation. Except, he says, he’s not. His career is entirely within “the establishment,” he says.

Dr. Pielke began his career as “one of the many nerds” at the National Center for Atmospheric Research before joining the faculty at the University of Colorado in 2001. His Ph.D. dissertation explored the importance of climate science in public policy. In the early 2000s, he wrote papers urging a broader description of climate change, more in line with that proposed by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which still cites his work, to enable effective government responses. He votes Democratic and says he has deep concerns about the way humans are changing the Earth’s energy balance.

But Dr. Pielke argues that many of the widely cited cost estimates connecting weather disasters to climate change are mistaken. (Climate advocates regularly assert that climate change is costing the U.S. billions of dollars every year.) His research, he says, shows that extreme weather appears costlier because properties are more valuable. In other words, wealth increase is the real story. He regularly takes issue with media portrayals of extreme weather, and with what he sees as a knee-jerk reaction that connects every wildfire, flood, or hurricane to climate change. The reality is more complex, he says.

He also argues against some of the ways scientists estimate the future impacts of climate change, saying they are unrealistic and extreme. All of this puts him in the “climate change isn’t so bad” misinformation category, according to some groups.

“All you have to do is increase the uncertainty, make these claims, and you delay action,” says Dr. Ekwurzel of the Union of Concerned Scientists.

But to Dr. Pielke, it just makes him a scientist. He stands by his research and has faced his own sort of harassment. A congressional investigation probed whether his work was secretly funded by fossil fuel interests. (The investigation cleared him of this charge.)

“I’m still establishment,” he says. “I’m one of the few people in the world whose peer-reviewed research is in three working groups of the IPCC. I didn’t leave the mainstream. The mainstream left me.”

narrative essay about honesty is the best policy

“The best way of gaining trust is to be trustworthy”

Most people within the climate field agree that the dynamics of science have shifted in recent years. An increasing number of younger people have come into the field to “make a difference.” Older scientists, meanwhile, worry that their inability to effectively communicate the seriousness of their findings was partly why policymakers have not taken dramatic action on climate change.

Both of these factors compelled more scientists to engage in advocacy. But this hasn’t necessarily been advocacy in a purely political sense. Most of the scientists interviewed for this article view the Earth’s warming with great alarm. They and others are simply trying to get across the urgency of their work.

Yet political leanings do come through. Scientists, along with most academics, are more politically liberal than the country as a whole, according to recent studies about political donations. And this, some researchers say, has helped undermine trust in science among those who lean Republican.

Matthew Burgess, a self-proclaimed “moderate Canadian” and assistant professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, says the politics he noticed within academia prompted him to study polarization around climate change – and to look for common ground.

“It felt like the conversations in the hallways were about how we need to change all of society over decades. But the only ones who were trusted or who could do anything about it were the left-most third of the Democratic Party,” he says. “That’s a dumb theory of change.”

He decided to do outreach on college campuses about polarized climate discussions. He says he spoke with conservatives and progressives and everyone in between, finding eager audiences among each and a willingness to be open – that is, to trust.

“Scientists sometimes overcomplicate the problem of being trusted,” he says. “The best way of gaining trust is to be trustworthy.”

That means acknowledging the downsides of climate action, he says. It means acknowledging where scientific expertise ends and personal, subjective opinion begins. It means acknowledging the big, ethical questions that come along with it. For instance, is it fair to prevent lower-income countries from developing the same fossil fuel-based energy systems that helped make the U.S. and Europe rich?

It also means keeping partisanship and incivility off social media. “The worst thing to happen to climate scientists on Twitter was climate scientists on Twitter,” he says.

And it means better explaining how science actually works.

narrative essay about honesty is the best policy

Science, many in the field point out, is an evolving body of knowledge. There are some physical findings that move toward fact – such as the world is getting warmer, and humans are a cause. Other assumptions  continue to change as researchers gather more information.

“Science is not ‘yes or no’ because science is constantly evolving,” says Dr. Caldas of the Union of Concerned Scientists. Take the pandemic, she says. “One of the best examples that we have of this is COVID, and how much the recommendations changed. ... ‘You don’t need to wear a mask.’ ‘You need to wear a mask.’ ‘There are N95s, and you need to wear those.’ ‘You need to do this.’ ‘You need to do that.’ It kept changing. Why? Because knowledge kept evolving.”

In the case of the Earth’s energy systems, evolving knowledge includes all sorts of scenarios about what will happen in the future. Scientists use complex computerized models, with billions of data points, to evaluate everything from ocean currents to the carbon sequestration within soil to the ripple-down impact of cleaner air or melting glaciers. They then make predictions about future climate impacts.

Much of the modeling has proved to be highly accurate. But there are still uncertainties when it comes to future projections.

“What can you predict with 100% accuracy?” asks Dr. Houlton, the Cornell dean. “The bar that is being placed on climate science is a bar that has been placed on nobody else in society. The future is, by definition, unknown. That can’t be the conversation. I don’t think any climate scientists can say how bad it is going to get.”

As a society, we calculate and act on risk all the time, he and others point out, whether it’s in military preparedness or in car insurance. In climate science, most researchers believe that the more the atmosphere warms, the greater the risk of negative impact. But that’s not a universal opinion. And we as humans are tempted by what we want to hear, including a rosy message that our climate-altered future won’t be so bad after all, and our children and communities will cope just fine.

“The value judgments are tough,” Dr. Houlton says. “I have great colleagues who are ringing alarm bells. I have individuals I respect who say, ‘No, it’s not going to be so bad.’ I get both perspectives.”

The problem, he and others say, is that without trust, the conversation between these two sides can devolve.

“Trust is a foundational attitude,” says Brian Kennedy, a senior researcher at Pew who researched public confidence in various professions and institutions for years. That’s why he and others study it, he explains.

Indeed, says Dr. Brown at The Breakthrough Institute, trust was the purpose of his controversial critique of his own research.

“After saying what I said, the perception that I got was, ‘You are on the bad side; you are a bad person,’” he says. “That’s unfortunate because I am trying to thread the needle; I am trying to be in the middle and say what I think. ... It’s difficult because people like to be on teams. A lot of people see this as a good-team-versus-bad-team thing, and the goal is to defeat the bad team. We can do better.”

Dear Reader,

About a year ago, I happened upon this statement about the Monitor in the Harvard Business Review – under the charming heading of “do things that don’t interest you”:

“Many things that end up” being meaningful, writes social scientist Joseph Grenny, “have come from conference workshops, articles, or online videos that began as a chore and ended with an insight. My work in Kenya, for example, was heavily influenced by a Christian Science Monitor article I had forced myself to read 10 years earlier. Sometimes, we call things ‘boring’ simply because they lie outside the box we are currently in.”

If you were to come up with a punchline to a joke about the Monitor, that would probably be it. We’re seen as being global, fair, insightful, and perhaps a bit too earnest. We’re the bran muffin of journalism.

But you know what? We change lives. And I’m going to argue that we change lives precisely because we force open that too-small box that most human beings think they live in.

The Monitor is a peculiar little publication that’s hard for the world to figure out. We’re run by a church, but we’re not only for church members and we’re not about converting people. We’re known as being fair even as the world becomes as polarized as at any time since the newspaper’s founding in 1908.

We have a mission beyond circulation, we want to bridge divides. We’re about kicking down the door of thought everywhere and saying, “You are bigger and more capable than you realize. And we can prove it.”
