Auto Detailing Business Plan Outline

Home » Getting Started With Your Auto Detailing Business » Auto Detailing Business Plan Outline

Creat e A Business Plan

Ever y business needs a business plan. It ’s a living document that can be edited and updated as needed. Creating a business plan is one of the first and most critical things to do if you want to start, operate, and grow any small business – more importantly a professional and successful car detailing business. A business plan is comprised of many components which we will outline for you!

Mission Statement:

Determine what you want the company to be within your community. Develop an Auto Detailing operation that provides its customers the best quality product that meets and exceeds the customer’s needs and expectations. Quality will be defined as the right product to meet the customer’s requirements from a basic hand car wash, complete detailing to a ceramic coating that includes paint correction along with all of the services listed in this business plan sample component: Services Offered.

The purpose of the company is to provide not only quality service, but a livelihood for the owners and its employees. Along with the ability to provide the community with assistance as needed and that is within the means of the company.

Note: Decide if the business location will be a fixed location, work from home, or operate mobile.

Demographics:

Determine where the customers are and how you will reach them. A competitive study should be conducted to determine the feasibility of such a company in the general area of __________________. It may be determined that four such operations exist in the area where you plan to operate your business.

None of these companies below offer the menu of services that (your company name) will offer.

  • Joe’s Body Shop is limited to exterior cleanup only
  • ABC Auto Dealer offers detailing only to customers who have purchased a vehicle from them.
  • Car Wash Inc. only offers express detailing and not full service detailing.
  • Calvin’s Custom Detail Center appears to offer the most complete service options of all of the reviewed detail businesses in the area. They should provide the best competition and will be the benchmark for your startup efforts.

The ten mile radius of your proposed location (fixed or mobile) shows there are four high end neighborhoods with homes ranging in price from $400,000 to $1,500,000. These four areas contain approximately 350 homes all within 10 miles of your business location or mobile territory. In addition, there are two industrial parks, two hospitals and numerous office building complexes with approximately 8,000 employees. The local private airport and a marina are also within that 10 mile radius.

Determine how much funding you will need! Every small business has different needs, and no financial solution is one-size-fits-all. Your personal financial situation and vision for your business will shape the financial future of your detailing business. Once you know how much  startup funding you will need, determine how you will obtain it.

Self-Funding

Also known as bootstrapping, self-funding lets you leverage your own financial resources to support your business. Self-funding can come in the form of turning to family and friends for capital, using your savings accounts, credit card, or even tapping into your 401(k).

By self-funding, you retain complete control over your business, but you also take on all the financial risk yourself. Be careful not to spend more than you can afford and be especially cautious if you choose to use retirement accounts early. You could face expensive fees or penalties or hurt your ability to retire on time. Check with your plan’s administrator and a personal financial advisor before you tap into your retirement account.

Venture Capital From Investors

Investors can provide you funding to start or grow your detailing business in the form of venture capital investments. Venture capital is normally offered in exchange for a percentage of ownership in the business.

Venture capital is different from traditional financing in many important ways. Venture capital typically:

  • Focuses on high-growth companies
  • Invests capital in return for equity, rather than debt (it’s not a loan)
  • Takes higher risks in exchange for potential higher returns
  • Has a longer investment perspective than traditional financing

Most venture capitalists will, at a minimum, want a seat on the board of directors. So be prepared to give up some portion of both control and ownership of your detailing business in exchange for funding.

How to get venture capital funding

There is no guaranteed way to get venture capital, but the process generally follows a standard order of basic steps.

Search for an investor   Look for individual investors, sometimes called “angel investors” or venture capital firms. Be sure to do enough background research to know if the investor is reputable and has experience working with startups.

Provide your business plan   The investor will want to take a look at your business plan to make sure it meets their investing criteria. Most angel investors concentrate on the various industries, geographic areas, or stage of business development.

Due diligence  The investors will want to look at your company’s management team, market, and services, corporate documents, and financial statements.

Discuss the terms  If they want to invest in your detailing business, the next step is to agree on a term document that describes the terms and conditions for the fund to make the investment.

Get the investment  Once you agree on the terms, you can get the investment! Once a venture fund has invested, it becomes actively involved in your detailing business . Venture funds normally come in what is known as “rounds.” As your detailing business meets its achievements, further rounds of financing are made available, with adjustments in price as your business executes its plan.

Use crowdfunding to fund your detailing business

Crowdfunding raises funds for a business from a large number of people, called Crowd funder. Crowd funder’s aren’t technically investors, because they don’t receive a share of ownership in your detailing business and don’t expect a financial return on their money.

Instead, crowd funders expect to get a “gift” from your company as thanks for their contribution. Many times, that gift is the product or service you plan to sell.  Offer a free full detail or even a ceramic coating depending on how much the individual crowdfunder invests.

Crowdfunding is popular because it’s very low risk for business owners. Not only do you get to retain complete control of your detailing business, but if your business fails, you’re typically not under obligation to repay your crowd funders. Every crowdfunding platform is different, so be sure to read the small print and understand your complete financial and legal obligations.

Obtain a small business loan

If you want to have complete control of your detailing business, but don’t have enough money to start, consider applying for a small business loan. To increase your chances of getting a loan, you should have a solid Business Plan, and financial projections for the next forty eight months. These tools will give you a good idea of how much you will need to ask for and will help the bank know if they are making a good choice by loaning you the funds.

Once you have your documents prepared, contact banks and credit unions to apply for a loan. You will want to compare offers to get the best possible terms for your small business loan. Use “Lender Match” to find lenders who offer SBA (Small Business Association) guaranteed loans.

If you have issues getting a traditional small business loan, you should look into SBA guaranteed loans. When your local bank thinks your business may be too risky to loan money to, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) can agree to guarantee your loan. That way, the bank has less risk and is more willing to loan you the funds.

Market Niches in order of importance:

  • Retail clients in the upscale neighborhoods defined in the demographic section.
  • Companies that have been identified within the industrial parks and office building complexes in the area.
  • Other automotive businesses
  • Real estate agencies
  • Insurance companies and claims departments
  • Apartment and condominium complexes
  • Car dealerships
  • Auto body shops
  • Car rental agencies
  • Senior citizens centers
  • Parking garages
  • College universities
  • Automatic tunnel car washes
  • Boat marinas

 Marketing Plan:

The marketing plan will vary from season to season throughout the year. The important issues of the plan include the following items.

  • Development of a website to ensure a solid presence on the internet.
  • Join the local chamber of commerce to gain immediate exposure to the businesses in the area. Create a special pricing for all chamber of commerce members and their families to promote growth.
  • Development of a plan for exploiting the social media platforms on the internet and the smart phones in use.
  • Create proper signage, logos, service menu and business cards for use by the company and its employees.  (Branding the Business)
  • Develop a plan to send weekly, biweekly, or monthly emails to your prospects and past customers.
  • Face to face meetings with each auto related business to foster a relationship with so that they are aware of your business and how you can help each other. Place flyers and business cards at their locations to create customer awareness.
  • Advertising mediums should be monitored and controlled to determine success in terms of customer and revenue growth.

Cost and Profit Model:

Have a cost and profit model to project the number of detailing services you expect to complete in the next twelve months. Follow that by your income and expense projections for the next twelve to twenty four months. Use this tool to project your income, expenses, and net income for the next four years. Understand your fixed and variable costs, your profit margin, and your cost per hour to operate your business profitably .

Equipment and consumable products:

Build and list your equipment and product needs, include the sources. Create a list of consumable products including polishes, cleaners, dressings, ceramic coatings, along with all detailing accessories you will need to provide the services that you listed in the Services Offered section of the business plan.

  • Pressure washer
  • Foam cannon
  • Rotary Buffers
  • DA Polishers
  • Ozone generator
  • Vapor steamer
  • Heated soil extractor
  • Exterior brushes
  • Interior brushes

  • Microfiber towels
  • Dressing applicators
  • Tornador interior cleaning tool

  • Carpet dyes
  • Window tint and installation accessories
  • Glass repair kit
  • Paint protection film
  • Plotter to cut films
  • Portable vehicle lift
  • Car covers
  • Car dusters

Methods and Procedures:

Consider what methods and procedures you need to start and maintain your detailing business. Start by determining what is important to you and to the success of your detailing business. Detail King provides a methods and procedures document at all of their live seminars. You can also view all of the components of this document on the Detail King website by searching “Auto Detailing Methods & Procedures Guide.”

Licenses and Permits:

List all permits, and licenses needed to be compliant with the local, state, and federal regulations. Review legal requirement with counsel and accounting professional.

EPA and local environmental regulations:

It is important to understand the regulations and the potential equipment needed to comply. Be sure to search them out and list them in your plan so that your mentor or legal counsel can assist you with understanding and complying with them. These requirements are different in each area and will require your attention.

Business Structure:

While starting a business involves a number of practical considerations, structure remains the primary determination to be made at the outset. Many entrepreneurs do not consider forming a business entity. Instead, the business will default to a sole proprietorship in the case of an individual owner, or a general partnership if there are multiple owners.

Those two types of businesses have significant disadvantages, mainly in the form of unlimited liability: Creditors of the business can recover the owner’s personal assets for business liabilities. The main advantage of those entities, pass-through tax treatment, means that profits are not taxed at the business level. By not incorporating you do not have liability protection.

Limited Partnerships (LPs) and Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) – Both of these entities are formed by filing documents with the Department of State and are largely governed by internal agreements between the owners. While at least one owner of a limited partnership must serve as general partner and be subject to unlimited liability, all members of an LLC are afforded limited liability. LLCs, however, may be subject to a state’s capital stock tax. Your personal assets are protected by incorporating your business. Being a small business, your accountant may advise you not to become a “C” corporation but rather and LLC or an LP.

S corporations are the most common entities that provide the owner personal protection with pass-through tax treatment. To create any corporation, the owner must file Articles of Incorporation with the Department of State, make an election to be treated as an S Corp., adopt bylaws, and hold initial meetings of shareholders and directors – among other organizational tasks. Your detailing business can incorporate as an LP or LLC and still be an S corporation. Best advice is to meet with a good small business account, review your situation and determine what is best for you and your new business.

Growth Plans:

Try to anticipate your growth relative to volume of customers, employees, equipment, and marketing needs. Consider forecasting customer and revenue growth along with retained customers. This will tell you that your overall plan is working. Forecast customer growth and revenue for 12, 24, 36 and 48 months.

We hope you are able to take away the key points from this business plan outline. You will need to fill in the blanks and insert your own information but by using this outline, you can make sure that you have all of your bases covered and that you aren’t missing anything! Once you are ready to start your auto detailing business you may want to consider one of Detail King’s Auto Detailing Business Start Up Kits .

c.) Challenges You Could Face When Starting and Operating a Mobile Detailing Business

Challenges During the Startup Phase

  • Initial Investment: Acquiring necessary equipment, tools, and supplies requires a significant upfront investment, impacting cash flow.
  • Business Registration and Licensing: Navigating the process of registering the business, obtaining permits, and complying with regulations can be time-consuming and complex.
  • Market Competition: Establishing a foothold in a competitive market requires strategic positioning and differentiation to attract customers.
  • Client Acquisition: Building a client base from scratch entails effective marketing and networking efforts to generate leads and secure bookings.
  • Operational Setup: Developing efficient operational processes and scheduling logistics for mobile service delivery poses logistical challenges.

Challenges During Operation

  • Client Retention: Sustaining customer loyalty amidst competition necessitates consistent service quality and effective communication.
  • Weather Dependency: Adverse weather conditions can disrupt service delivery and impact scheduling, affecting revenue and client satisfaction.

  • Staffing Issues: Hiring and retaining skilled employees pose challenges, as turnover rates may affect service consistency and quality.
  • Managing Growth: Scaling the business while maintaining service standards requires strategic planning and resource allocation to support expansion.

Navigating these challenges requires resilience, adaptability, and strategic decision-making to ensure the success and sustainability of the mobile detailing business.

3. Research

Quality information plays a significant role in achieving success.

Continuous research is vital. The more you know, the easier it is to operate your business.

a.) Demand, the Competition and Your Location b.) Target Audience

a.) Demand, the Competition and Your Location

Mobile Detailing Business Market Analysis

Determining demand is crucial before starting a mobile detailing business. Quality services at reasonable prices are essential, but without sufficient demand, success is unlikely. Lack of demand could lead to financial struggles and eventual closure.

Market Saturation:

Besides demand, assessing market saturation is vital. Saturated markets make gaining market share challenging unless offering unique services. Competition may swiftly replicate ideas, posing significant threats to market entry.

Competition:

Understanding competitors is key. Analyze their offerings, strengths, and weaknesses. Innovate to introduce unique services rather than engaging in direct competition. Comprehending the competitive landscape is essential for success.

Choosing Your Location:

Selecting the right location is critical. Balance demand, competition, and affordability. Highly populated areas offer exposure but may entail higher expenses. Opting for cheaper rent is tempting, but ensure sufficient customer base to ensure profitability.

Conclusively, thorough research and analysis of supply, demand, competition, and location are imperative for a mobile detailing business’s success.

Balanced supply and demand, coupled with strategic location selection, enhance the likelihood of profitability and sustainability.

For more, see the Demand for Your Products and Services and Choosing The Best Location for Your Business.

b.) Target Audience

Benefits of Understanding Your Target Audience

  • Tailored Products and Services: Understanding your target audience enables customization of offerings to meet specific customer needs and preferences.
  • Enhanced Marketing Strategies: Targeted marketing campaigns resonate better with the intended audience, leading to higher engagement and conversion rates.
  • Improved Customer Experience: Addressing the pain points and desires of your target audience enhances overall customer satisfaction and loyalty.
  • Increased Profitability: By catering to the specific needs of your target market, you can command premium prices and improve profitability.

Target Market Ideas:

  • Vehicle Owners: Individuals who own cars, trucks, or other vehicles are potential customers seeking detailing services to maintain their vehicles’ appearance.
  • Car Enthusiasts: Enthusiasts passionate about cars may require specialized detailing services to preserve and enhance their vehicle’s aesthetics.
  • Fleet Owners: Businesses with fleets of vehicles, such as rental companies, delivery services, or taxi companies, require regular detailing to maintain their fleet’s image and value.
  • Real Estate Agents: Real estate agents often seek detailing services to enhance the appearance of properties before listing them for sale, attracting potential buyers.
  • Corporate Clients: Companies may seek mobile detailing services for their corporate fleets, providing convenience and maintaining a professional image.
  • Event Planners: Event planners may require detailing services for vehicles used in weddings, parties, or corporate events to ensure a polished presentation.
  • Residential Communities: Gated communities or residential complexes may offer detailing services as an added amenity for residents, creating a recurring customer base.

Understanding and targeting these potential customer segments can help maximize the success and profitability of a mobile detailing business.

  • Comprehensive Listing: Begin by listing all necessary items and expenses required to launch your mobile detailing venture.
  • Price Research: Conduct thorough research to obtain accurate pricing information for equipment, supplies, permits, and other essentials.
  • Consider Additional Factors: Anticipate additional expenses such as marketing, insurance, licensing fees, and unexpected contingencies.

Furthermore, eco-friendly or waterless detailing services are popular because customers are aware of the negative effects of wasting too much water and using chemicals, and 35% of consumers are willing to pay significantly more for eco-friendly services.

The automotive industry as a whole is going through digitalization and a significant increase in technology adoption. On-demand mobile detailing apps for consumers are also on the rise. What is a Mobile Detailing Business Plan?

A mobile detailing business plan is a formal written document that describes your company’s business strategy and its feasibility. It documents the reasons you will be successful, your areas of competitive advantage, and it includes information about your team members. Your business plan is a key document that will convince investors and lenders (if needed) that you are positioned to become a successful venture.

Why Write a Mobile Detailing Business Plan?

A mobile detailing business plan is required for banks and investors. The document is a clear and concise guide of your business idea and the steps you will take to make it profitable.

Entrepreneurs can also use this as a roadmap when starting their new company or venture, especially if they are inexperienced in starting a business.

Writing an Effective Mobile Detailing Business Plan

The following are the key components of a successful mobile detailing business plan:

Executive Summary

The executive summary of a mobile detailing business plan is a one to two page overview of your entire business plan. It should summarize the main points, which will be presented in full in the rest of your business plan.

  • Start with a one-line description of your mobile detailing company
  • Provide a short summary of the key points in each section of your business plan, which includes information about your company’s management team, industry analysis, competitive analysis, and financial forecast among others.

Company Description

This section should include a brief history of your company. Include a short description of how your company started, and provide a timeline of milestones your company has achieved.

If you are just starting your mobile detailing business, you may not have a long company history. Instead, you can include information about your professional experience in this industry and how and why you conceived your new venture. If you have worked for a similar company before or have been involved in an entrepreneurial venture before starting your mobile detailing firm, mention this.

You will also include information about your chosen mobile detailing business model and how, if applicable, it is different from other companies in your industry.

Industry Analysis

The industry or market analysis is an important component of a mobile detailing business plan. Conduct thorough market research to determine industry trends and document the size of your market.

Questions to answer include:

  • What part of the mobile detailing industry are you targeting?
  • How big is the market?
  • What trends are happening in the industry right now (and if applicable, how do these trends support the success of your company)?

You should also include sources for the information you provide, such as published research reports and expert opinions.

Customer Analysis

This section should include a list of your target audience(s) with demographic and psychographic profiles (e.g., age, gender, income level, profession, job titles, interests). You will need to provide a profile of each customer segment separately, including their needs and wants.

For example, customers of a mobile detailing business may include individuals, small businesses, and large corporations.

You can include information about how your customers make the decision to buy from you as well as what keeps them buying from you.

Develop a strategy for targeting those customers who are most likely to buy from you, as well as those that might be influenced to buy your products or mobile detailing services with the right marketing.

Competitive Analysis

The competitive analysis helps you determine how your product or service will be different from competitors, and what your unique selling proposition (USP) might be that will set you apart in this industry.

For each competitor, list their strengths and weaknesses. Next, determine your areas of competitive differentiation and/or advantage; that is, in what ways are you different from and ideally better than your competitors.

Marketing Plan

This part of the business plan is where you determine and document your marketing plan. . Your plan should be clearly laid out, including the following 4 Ps.

  • Product/Service : Detail your product/service offerings here. Document their features and benefits.
  • Price : Document your pricing strategy here. In addition to stating the prices for your products/services, mention how your pricing compares to your competition.
  • Place : Where will your customers find you? What channels of distribution (e.g., partnerships) will you use to reach them if applicable?
  • Promotion : How will you reach your target customers? For example, you may use social media, write blog posts, create an email marketing campaign, use pay-per-click advertising, or launch a direct mail campaign. Or, you may promote your mobile detailing business via word-of-mouth marketing.

Operations Plan

This part of your mobile detailing business plan should include the following information:

  • How will you deliver your service to customers?
  • What infrastructure, equipment, and resources are needed to operate successfully?
  •  How can you meet those requirements within budget constraints?

The operations plan is where you also need to include your company’s business policies. You will want to establish policies related to everything from customer service to pricing, to the overall brand image you are trying to present.

Finally, and most importantly, in your Operations Plan, you will lay out the milestones your company hopes to achieve within the next five years. Create a chart that shows the key milestone(s) you hope to achieve each quarter for the next four quarters, and then each year for the following four years. Examples of milestones for a mobile detailing business include reaching $X in sales. Other examples include adding a certain number of new customers or launching a new service.

Management Team

List your team members here including their names and titles, as well as their expertise and experience relevant to your specific mobile detailing industry. Include brief biography sketches for each team member.

Particularly if you are seeking funding, the goal of this section is to convince investors and lenders that your team has the expertise and experience to execute your plan. If you are missing key team members, document the roles and responsibilities you plan to hire for in the future.

Financial Plan

Here you will include a summary of your complete and detailed financial plan (your full financial projections go in the Appendix).

This includes the following three financial statements:

Primary research is research you complete yourself. It includes polling consumers for car detailing services and visiting small business owners to see how their mobile car wash runs. Secondary research is third-party research, such as government statistics and marketing publications.

Some of the things you’ll learn through market research include:

  • Driving force in the car wash industry: One major driving force is the rise of disposable income and increased spending on automobile maintenance.
  • Target demographics: Millennials now comprise the largest share of car buyers and place a high value on experiential purchases and services over material goods. Recurring detailing on leased vehicles provides a stable revenue stream.
  • Industry trends: Offering eco-friendly products and clean processes to appeal to environmentally-conscious consumers.
  • Potential partnerships: Strategically partnering with new and used car dealerships, rental car agencies, and others for customer referrals can further accelerate business growth.

  • Visit in person: Assess the customer experience in person. This enables you to spot potential gaps in service offerings, pricing, and convenience that a mobile model can fill.
  • Evaluating web presence: Online reputation and digital marketing savvy of immobile detailing shops is also instructive.
  • Search online directories: Use platforms like Yelp to make a comprehensive list.

Entrepreneurs must carefully project sales volumes and pricing to ensure adequate profitability. Performing in-depth competitive research is key to forecasting realistic revenue potential. With proper planning, mobile detailing can offer dynamic small business ownership.

4. Form a Legal Business Entity

When starting a mobile auto detailing business, one of the most important legal decisions is choosing the right business structure. The four main options each have pros and cons to weigh.

Sole Proprietorship

A sole proprietorship is the simplest as it’s not a separate legal entity – the business owner and the business are the same. There’s little paperwork to form one and no special registration is required in most states beyond licenses. However, the owner has unlimited personal liability for debts and legal issues arising from the business. Their assets are at risk.

Partnership

Partnerships allow two or more owners to share resources and split profits. General partnerships don’t require formal registration and are taxed only at the personal level. The downside, again, is unlimited liability. If one partner is sued or takes on debt, the others’ assets can be seized.

Limited Liability Partnership (LLP)

A Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) offers liability protection like a corporation so owners’ assets are generally not at risk. However, forming an LLP is more complex with required registration documents. Multi-owner disputes can also jeopardize the business if partners have disagreements.

The most advisable legal structure for mobile detailers is forming a Limited Liability Company (LLC). LLCs limit owners’ liability and allow pass-through taxation like a partnership. Forming an LLC also provides flexibility to operate as a sole proprietorship initially with the option to add partners later.

Corporation

Forming a Corporation would also limit liability exposure but requires the most complex and costly registration. Corporations are subject to double taxation on profits and stricter record-keeping. For small mobile service businesses, the LLC provides liability protection without over-complicating finances and taxes.

5. Register Your Business For Taxes

One key tax-related task when starting a mobile detailing company is obtaining an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS. This unique nine-digit number identifies your business for tax purposes.

An EIN is crucial even for sole proprietors without employees so your business income can be reported separately from personal taxes. It also opens doors for setting up business bank accounts, applying for licenses and permits, and other legal needs.

The good news is obtaining an EIN is quick and free through the IRS website.

Follow these steps:

  • First, navigate to the EIN Assistant page . This online application only takes minutes. You’ll need basic information like your name, address, and Social Security number.
  • Next, choose your business structure. For mobile detailers, select “View Additional Types, Including LLCs” and then “Limited liability company” as the type.
  • The application then asks for your LLC’s official name and business address. You’ll also need to list a “responsible party” – either yourself as the owner or another point of contact.
  • After entering this info and answering a few yes/no questions, hit “Submit.” Instantly, you’ll receive a confirmation notice with your new EIN.
  • Print and save this notice for your records. You can also view your EIN again by logging into your IRS account.

With an EIN established, complete state-level licensing to collect and remit sales tax. The requirements vary by location but often entail registering for a seller’s permit, tax ID number, or business license.

6. Setup Your Accounting

As a mobile detailing entrepreneur, implementing an organized accounting system from the start is crucial. Proper bookkeeping and financial management establish credibility with the IRS and give visibility into the true profitability of your business.

Accounting Software

Begin by using small business accounting software like QuickBooks to automatically track income, expenses, and account balances, and generate financial statements. QuickBooks seamlessly syncs with business bank accounts and credit cards for easy categorization. Reports provide real-time insight to make data-driven decisions.

Hire an Accountant

Partnering with an accountant is advisable. A financial expert can set up your bookkeeping structure and provide ongoing services like payroll, tax preparation, financial statement analysis, and audit support.

For mobile detailers, an accountant can help track deductible expenses like equipment, product supplies, and mileage to maximize write-offs. They’ll also remind you of quarterly tax deadlines.

Expect to invest at least $200-$400 monthly for a part-time bookkeeper. Come tax season, filing as an LLC costs $800-$1,200. For fiscal year-end filings only, fees range $300-$500.

Audit defense is invaluable – the IRS audits nearly 2% of sole proprietor returns annually. Your accountant can handle correspondence and negotiations if issues arise.

Open a Business Bank Account

Keeping business and personal finances 100% separate is also critical. Open a dedicated business checking account and credit card. Never co-mingle funds or pay yourself from the same account used for operations.

Apply for a Business Credit Card

Applying for a small business credit card requires your company’s legal name, EIN, address, estimated revenue, and personal SSN. Issuers like Chase and Capital One offer cards with modest $500 to $1,000 limits to start.

7. Obtain Licenses and Permits

Starting a mobile auto detailing venture requires securing proper licensing to legally operate. Check with the U.S. Small Business Administration for federal license requirements. The SBA also provides a local tool for state permit research.

At the state level, a mobile detailer must register for a sales tax permit or seller’s license to collect and remit sales tax on services. Rates range from 2% to 7% based on location. Failing to collect and submit sales tax leads to hefty penalties.

Mobile detailers should also obtain a state business license or tax registration certificate verifying your company’s right to provide services intrastate. Florida’s Annual Resale Certificate for Sales Tax costs $50, for example.

Additionally, mobile operations crossing county lines need an interstate commerce permit. Kentucky costs $25 annually for a mobile detailer. This allows you to provide services outside your hometown’s jurisdiction.

Seeking local permits and licenses is also a must before servicing customers. Many municipalities require a general business license costing $50 to $100 on average.

Mobile detailers working outside need permits for legal parking/workspace. New York City’s Street Space Permit costs $100 to $480 depending on the zone and time needed. Philadelphia’s Sidewalk Space Permit is $30 annually.

Check zoning laws to ensure detailing is permitted at your designated business location or home parking. Restrictions often prohibit certain commercial activities in residential areas.

Adhering to worker protection laws is also mandatory. Carry workers’ compensation insurance where required and abide by OSHA safety regulations like proper venting, mask use, and more.

8. Get Business Insurance

Carrying adequate business insurance is strongly advised when starting a mobile detailing venture. The right policies help safeguard your company’s financial future should the unexpected occur.

Without proper coverage, a single accident or lawsuit can quickly put you out of business. For example, a customer slips on a wet surface you failed to cauterize and sustains serious injuries. Or an electrical fire sparked by faulty equipment destroys your detailing van entirely. Even frivolous suits can sink unprotected businesses under crushing legal fees.

By securing key insurance policies, mobile detailers greatly mitigate such catastrophic risks. General liability insurance covers third-party property damage and bodily injury claims up to policy limits, typically $1 million. Errors & omissions policies protect against financial loss from alleged professional mistakes. Commercial auto insurance replaces detailing vehicles stolen or totaled.

Compare premiums, exclusions, deductibles, and liability limits across multiple carriers. Opt for $1 million minimums for general and professional liability plans. Also, inquire about business property and workers’ compensation policies if hiring employees. Consider adding extra coverage like roadside assistance.

9. Create an Office Space

While mobile by design, securing some type of base office space can benefit auto detailing businesses in certain situations. An office provides an address for legal registration, storage for equipment and supplies, and a central hub for admin work.

Home Office

Operating solely from home is certainly possible starting. A spare room or garage can double as a modest office for minimal costs. However, working amidst family may prove distracting and home insurance often prohibits business activity. Still, a basic home office runs just $100-$200 monthly for most.

Coworking Office

For establishing a more professional presence, coworking spaces like WeWork provide flexible shared offices on-demand. With desks starting at around $300 monthly, these communal hubs offer meeting rooms, amenities, networking, and credibility for solos. However, space is limited for storing large amounts of gear long-term.

Retail Office

Subletting space in an auto repair shop or dealership could enable detailing equipment access and ambient client referrals. Typical shop bay leases average $1,500 monthly. The exposure and built-in customer base can offset costs. However, restrictions from the landlord may apply.

Commercial Office

Leasing a standalone commercial retail space for customer drop-offs provides autonomy. Storefront spots near high-traffic areas cost approximately $1,800-$3,000 monthly though. Dedicating capital to lease extensive space and not generating revenue directly could strain cash flow for mobile operations.

10. Source Your Equipment

Launching a mobile detailing operation requires acquiring key equipment like power washers, vacuums, polishers, and more. Savvy entrepreneurs have options to secure these necessary tools at reasonable costs.

Purchasing brand-new commercial-grade gear from specialty retailers like Car Wash World and Detail King provides warranty protection and optimal performance out of the gate. However, equipment bundles and complete trailer setups can cost $10,000.

Opting for used detailing equipment through sites like Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, and Letgo can significantly reduce startup costs. Search locally for sellers liquidating quality gear at 50 % to 80% discounts. Inspect items carefully before purchase to ensure functional condition. Factor in potential repair costs down the line.

Renting equipment through home improvement stores like Home Depot is another cost-effective option for the first few jobs or during seasonal spikes. All tools needed for a single day rent for roughly $100 to 150 total. However, frequent rentals add up over time.

Leasing equipment through detailing suppliers carries advantages like maintenance, upgrades, and the ability to try before you buy. But monthly costs of $300+ make ownership preferable if remaining in business long term.

11. Establish Your Brand Assets

Creating a strong brand identity is crucial for mobile detailers to stand out and be remembered. Investing in core brand assets promotes recognition and fosters customer loyalty over generic competitors.

13. How to Market a Mobile Detailing Company

Implementing an effective marketing strategy is imperative for mobile detailers to attract new clients consistently. With competition fierce industrywide, those who excel at promotion will capture greater market share.

Tap Into Your Network

First and foremost, tap into your network and past customer roster for referrals. Offer existing clients a 10% discount on their next detail for each new customer they send your way. Word-of-mouth is your most valuable asset early on.

Digital Marketing

Beyond referrals, consider these digital tactics to strengthen visibility:

  • Launch Google Ads campaigns using keywords like “mobile auto detailing” and target neighborhood geos. Expect to invest at least $300 monthly in tested ads.
  • Run promotions on Facebook and Instagram using targeted location/interest filters. Highlight unique services and deals to stand out in the feed.
  • Start a YouTube channel creating tutorials like “How to hand polish your vehicle.” Optimize with local SEO to rank in search.
  • Write blog posts on your website like “Top Mobile Detailing Tips” for organic traffic and leads. Guest posts on industry blogs also.
  • Claim and update free profiles on sites like Yelp, Angie’s, and Facebook to manage your reputation.

Traditional Marketing

Traditional approaches like direct mail postcards, newspaper ads, flyers, and billboards may also prove worthwhile depending on your geographic market. Consider testing:

  • Sending postcard mailers each month to homes with newer model vehicles. Use a compelling offer.
  • Placing ads in community newspapers and circulars distributed locally. Target by zip code.
  • Posting flyers on public boards at gyms, cafes, colleges, and other high-traffic spots.
  • Renting a digital billboard spot along a busy highway for maximum impressions.

The most effective mix of traditional and digital marketing efforts will take testing. Start by perfecting your unique value prop, offers, and messaging before investing heavily. With a strategic approach, new mobile detailers can develop an acquisition process as polished as the cars they detail.

14. Focus on the Customer

Providing an incredible customer service experience is crucial for mobile detailers to earn loyalty, reviews, and coveted referrals. In an industry built on quality craftsmanship and relationships, going the extra mile separates good from great.

Some ways to increase customer focus include:

  • Make each client feel like a friend: Greet them warmly, listen attentively as they describe problem areas, and educate them patiently on realistic outcomes.
  • Be thorough: After finishing a project, conduct a walkaround to point out improvements made.
  • Follow up: Follow up again in a few days by email or postcard thanking them for their business.
  • Offer incentives: Include a coupon code for their next appointment. This simple outreach shows you value the relationship beyond a single transaction.
  • Create a reward system: Incentivize referrals through creative promotions. For every new customer sent your way, extend 10% off their next visit.

By providing exemplary service pre and post-sale, mobile detailers earn referrals and word-of-mouth marketing that grows businesses in competitive markets. Make caring about customers a core value woven into all you do.

What is Mobile Detailing?

In the most simple terms, car detailing is the process of cleaning, repairing, or refurbishing a vehicle so that it is in superior cosmetic condition.

You can think of it as a much deeper clean than a typical car wash and interior clean. You'll need to ensure both the interior and exterior are in perfect shape to satisfy your customers and grow your car detailing business.

What is a Mobile Detailing Business?

Now that you know what car detailing is all about, there are several ways you can turn it into a full-time business.

One of the cheapest and most affordable ways is by starting a mobile detailing business.

With this business model, you'll go directly to your customers instead of having an expensive landmark location. These can be beneficial as a business owner for several reasons but the most important is the amount of money you'll save by not having to pay for a physical location.

How to Start a Mobile Detailing Business

1. create a business plan.

Creating a business plan is a fundamental step when creating any business. A sound business plan will help you map out the steps you need to take to start and grow a successful business.

Your business plan should include your business goals, target market, how you'll market your business, your business model, what services you'll offer, and your financial projections.

You can check out this guide for help writing a business plan .

2. Get Funding for Your Business

Mobile detailing businesses are extremely affordable to get started. You can often times start your business for less than $1,000.

If you need money to start your business, consider asking family and friends or taking out a small business loan.

3. Register Your Business

Next, you'll need to register your business with the state you operate in. This will include registering your business name, getting a tax ID number, and setting up your business entity.

4. Open a Business Checking Account

Keeping your personal and businesses expenses separate is essential to avoid any problems down the road when it comes tax season.

It's smart to open a business checking account to handle your business finances and stay on top of your money.

You can also consider a business credit card to help navigate startup costs.

5. Obtain Licenses, Permits, and Insurance

With any business, there could be some licenses or permits needed to begin your operations. Be sure to explore these before beginning otherwise you could face penalties in some cities.

The exact permits and licenses you need will depend on the state and city you operate in.

You'll also want to obtain liability insurance for your company. This can protect your business in case something goes wrong on the job.

General lability insurance can be very affordable so it's a good idea to research for your mobile detailing business.

6. Market Your Services and Get Started!

Finally, it's time to launch your business. You'll want to begin any marketing initiatives you have planned to gain customers.

Here's a great video on how to get started!

Mobile Detailing Equipment and Supplies

When you decide to start your car detailing business, you’ll need a few pieces of equipment and supplies to get started. While some may be considered optional, many of them are required or recommended.

mobile detailing business plan template

Transportation

Because your business is mobile, you’ll need a way to transport yourself and your equipment to your clients. You can consider using a car, but a larger vehicle like a truck or SUV would be more ideal given some of the equipment required. If you plan on hiring employees or additional help, a larger vehicle will also allow for more flexibility.

Power Washer

While this piece of equipment is technically optional, it might make your job easier as a car detailer. The pressure built by this machine can remove even the toughest dirt and mud encrusted on any vehicle. Some power washers have the ability to add a cleaning solution to them, making it even more powerful when cleaning the exterior of a vehicle.

You can find a power washer from many local hardware or home appliance stores or you can opt to purchase one online.

Power washers range in price depending on the brand and power desired but you can expect to spend at least $300 on a new power washer or over $1,000 for a higher-end piece of equipment.

If you’re looking to save money on a power washer, you could consider purchasing a used piece that you might be able to find at a garage sale or via websites like Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. If purchasing a used piece of equipment, it’s wise to ensure the piece works before handing over any cash.

Here are some of our recommended power washers:

  • CRAFTSMAN 3000 MAX PSI at 2.1 GPM Gas Pressure Washer – Powered by Briggs & Stratton  – $368
  • PowerBoss 3100 MAX PSI at 2.4 GPM Gas Pressure Washer – Powered by HONDA  – $429 (31% Off)

Water Source

Because your business is mobile, you’ll need some sort of water supply to clean vehicles. For many, this will be the homeowner's water supply. You should always check with the homeowners beforehand to make sure that they are okay with this and you should note how far the nearest water source is from their driveway (or where the car will be washed).

If you’re planning to use a water source at the vehicle owner's location, you’ll need a way to direct that water where you want it in the form of a hose. You should  purchase multiple sizes  or consider purchasing a coupler to connect multiple hoses together. This can become handy if the homeowner's water source is far away from the location of the vehicle.

Cost: $15 – $50

Hose Attachments

To make your job easier, you should purchase an attachment for your hose that makes shutting off the water easy and efficient. That way, when the water is not needed, you will not be forced to make your way to the source to turn it off. You can find a variety of hose attachments  here .

Cost : $5 – $25

A vacuum is necessary to remove any dirt or debris from the interior of the vehicle. Your vacuum should either be portable or offer attachments making it easier to maneuver once inside the vehicle.

Prices on vacuums range depending on the brand, power, and style but you can expect to spend anywhere from $30 to $300. You can find a selection of car detailing vacuums  here .

Extension Cords

Unless your vacuum is battery powered, you’ll need a source of power and extension cords to route the power to your device. Once again, ensure that the homeowner is okay with using a power supply beforehand and note where it is located. You can find a selection of extension cords for outdoor use  here .

Cost: $10 – $50

A buffer will help you to apply wax or polish on the exterior of the vehicle more efficiently and it will typically provide more shine than a hand waxed vehicle. While buffing is not typically standard on basic car detailing packages, you can charge an additional fee for this service. You can find a selection of buffers  here .

Cleaning Supplies

Now that you have most of the logistical supplies in hand, you’ll need to purchase your cleaning and detailing supplies. You can choose to purchase them separately or together in a kit that will provide many of the  car detailing essentials .

  • Car Wash Soap
  • Car Wax or Polish
  • Interior Detailer
  • Carpet Cleaner
  • Leather Conditioner
  • Glass Cleaner
  • Wheel Cleaner

Towels, Sponges, and Brushes

You’ll need a few different products to clean deep in crevasses, dry, and polish the exterior of the vehicle you’re working on. Between towels, sponges, and brushes, you should be capable of reaching any area you need to. You can find a selection of these items  here .

How To Detail a Car

Detailing a vehicle requires extreme attention to detail (hence the name). You’ll need to keep your eyes sharp looking for even the smallest of blemishes when cleaning to keep your clients satisfied.

Step 1: Inspect the Vehicle

Before you turn the hose or get the cleaning supplies out, you should first give the vehicle an inspection to see what areas are in need of the most attention. You should inspect both the interior and exterior of the vehicle noting any major blemishes.

Step 2: Clean the Interior

After inspecting the car, it’s time to get down to cleaning the interior of the vehicle. Start by cleaning any crevasse of the interior like instrument clusters, door handles, windows, and the trunk (if applicable).

Next, remove any dirt or debris from the seats of the vehicle and wiping them onto the floor to vacuum up. Once any crumbs or debris are removed, you can clean the seats with the appropriate cleaners. If the seats are leather, you can use your leather conditioner to bring new life to the seats.

After cleaning the seats, you should move onto the floor of the vehicle. Starting by vacuuming the floor, then clean any carpet that is in need using the appropriate carpet cleaner.

Step 3: Clean the Exterior

After completing the interior, it’s time to move on to the exterior. Start by giving the vehicle a rinse of water. Then, depending on your equipment, either fill a bucket with your car wash soap and water or prepare your power washer for a deeper clean. Once your bucket is full, start cleaning the exterior with a sponge or rag you find to work best. Once the car has been washed, rinse the car with water until clear of any soap suds. Immediately start drying the vehicle after rinsing to avoid any dry spots. If dry spots do occur, you can polish them away later on.

Now that the majority of the vehicle is clean, you’ll need to washer the wheels and tires. It’s a good idea to use a special wheel cleaner for deeper penetration as wheels are typically very dirty from brake dust. Once the wheels are clean, you can apply tire shine as desired to give the wheels a fresh look.

Step 4: Wax

Now that the car is completely clean, you should wax or polish the vehicle to give it some extra shine. If you have a buffer, this is the time to use it. Always wax in a circular motion to avoid any streaks. Once you have waxed the vehicle, use a microfiber towel to wipe away any excess wax or polish.

Step 5: Final Inspection

Now that the vehicle is polished, you should inspect the entire vehicle looking for any areas that could have been overlooked. If you find any areas in need of cleaning, spot clean them as necessary.

Step 6: Get Owners Approval

Once the vehicle has passed your inspection, the owner of the vehicle will get his or her turn to inspect your work. If you get a thumbs up, you’re good to go. If you get a thumbs down, go over any areas the owner mentions.

Step 7: Clean Up

Once you have the owner's approval of your work, you’ll need to clean up any mess you have made and load your equipment and supplies back into your vehicle. You should spray off the driveway so that any soap suds are gone.

One of the best options is to find an open space where you can wash vehicles with a larger driveway. Some rental spaces might have a large space to complete your work. (Always check with the property owner to ensure they are okay with your plans)

Insurance Document for Mobile Detailing Business

When starting a mobile detailing business, a well-crafted business plan is your roadmap to success, covering everything from the geographic market you’ll serve to the structure of your business and the services you’ll offer.

Market Analysis

Your business plan should start with a Market Analysis to gauge the potential of your mobile detailing operation. Research current trends in the car detailing business to understand consumer behavior and identify your target demographic. Consider startup costs such as equipment and insurance , and analyze competitors to determine your unique selling proposition.

Structuring Your Business

Next, define the business structure best suited to your needs. You might opt for a sole proprietorship if going it alone, but if you’re planning to share ownership, consider a partnership or a more formal setup like a limited liability company (LLC) or corporation to protect personal assets. Each structure has distinct implications for taxation, liability, and ongoing compliance requirements. For those who are unsure where to begin, Legal Advice on the choice of business structure is indispensable. Speaking from personal experience, I highly suggest hiring an attorney to set up your business structure. I didn’t with a business decades ago, and it seriously bit me in the butt.

Detailing Services Menu

Finally, articulate the detailing services your business will offer, such as detailing, paint correction and protection, etc. Create a detailed menu of services with pricing that reflects market rates while considering your costs to ensure profitability. Consider offering tiered packages from basic to premium to cater to a range of customers. Detail the potential revenue streams, such as routine appointments, seasonal services, or special event offerings. A successful services menu balances customer desires with your business’s strengths, as shown in any comprehensive Step by Step Guide to starting a mobile detailing business.

By focusing on these key aspects, your business plan will serve as a solid foundation for your mobile detailing enterprise.

2. Legal and Financial Considerations

Legal Research

Before launching your mobile detailing business, it is crucial to address the legal and financial foundations. These include obtaining the necessary permits and licenses, securing appropriate insurance to mitigate risks, and managing your business’s finances effectively to ensure sustainability and legal compliance. For instance, it’s important that you have insurance should you damage/scratch a client’s car during the detailing process.

Securing Permits and Licenses

To operate legally, you must obtain the necessary permits and licenses . Typically, this might include a business license from your local municipality as well as industry-specific permits. For a mobile detailing business, you may need to check for specific permits related to water disposal and the use of chemicals. If you plan to incorporate or form an LLC, you’ll need to apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) through the IRS. Failing to secure the right permits and licenses can result in fines or penalties .

Insurance and Risk Management

Protecting your business with the right insurance policies is essential. At a minimum, you’ll want to have liability insurance to cover damages or injuries caused by your operations. Business insurance might also encompass coverage for your equipment and vehicle. Risk management includes recognizing potential liabilities and ensuring that you’re adequately insured to protect against these risks.

Managing Finances

  • Budgeting : Begin with a solid budget that outlines expected income , expenses , and cash flow projections. Keep personal and business finances separate by using a dedicated business bank account .
  • Accounting : Utilize reliable accounting software to track your revenues and expenses. This will simplify tax filing and allow you to understand your financial position at any time.
  • Funding : If necessary, explore options for a business loan or pitch to investors to secure the capital required for startup costs. Remember, the more detailed your business plan, the better your chances of securing funding.

Set up systems to monitor your financial health regularly to avoid potential cash flow problems. Being attentive to these financial details can be the difference between a thriving business and a struggling one.

3. Setting Up Operations

In establishing your mobile detailing business, focusing on the right equipment and crafting a robust online presence are crucial. These foundational elements ensure you can deliver high-quality services and attract clients through visible and engaging digital marketing.

Equipment and Materials

Your mobile detailing toolkit should include the following:

  • Vacuum : A high-power vacuum for interior cleaning.
  • Towels : Microfiber towels for streak-free drying.
  • Wax and Polish : Quality waxes and polishes for paint protection and shine.
  • Polisher and Buffer : To effectively apply wax and polish.
  • Pressure Washer : For thorough and efficient exterior washing.
  • Leather Conditioner : To keep leather interiors supple.
  • Water Reclamation System : Essential for environmental compliance and water conservation.

Remember, choosing the right materials directly impacts the detailing results and the longevity of your work. Ensure each product, from waxes for paint protection to cleaners for wheels and tires, is of professional grade.

Building a Web and Social Media Presence

To set up your web presence, it’s suggested you choose a company focused on auto detailing website design .  Your site should pop, be super easy to use, and memorable. Include:

  • A concise description of your services
  • Clear pricing
  • An easy booking system
  • Portfolio showcasing your work

Your social media should showcase your work through before-and-after photos, customer testimonials, and educational content that positions you as an expert in auto detailing. Use platforms like Instagram and Facebook to engage with your community and potential clients.

Leverage different marketing channels to broaden your reach. You can’t be everywhere at once, but your web and social media presence can. Regular updates and interactions online will build your reputation and help attract a steady stream of customers for your mobile detailing business.

4. Sales and Marketing Strategy

In developing a robust sales and marketing strategy for your mobile detailing business, consider your approach to craft a compelling marketing plan, create standout branding materials, and engage with customers to foster loyalty.

Creating a Marketing Plan

Your marketing plan is the blueprint for your promotional activities. Specifically, determine the ideal marketing channels to reach your potential clients. Social media platforms can be potent tools, allowing you to showcase your services with before and after photos, share customer testimonials, and engage with your community. Invest in auto detailing certification courses, as highlighting your expertise can significantly enhance customer trust and brand credibility.

Branding and Marketing Materials

Create a strong recognizable brand with professional business cards , service menus, and a clean and easy-to-navigate web presence . Elevate your brand by ensuring that all materials consistently reflect your unique value proposition. Utilize bold visuals and clear messaging that communicate your attention to detail and customer service excellence. By doing so, you’ll establish a memorable brand that resonates with clients.

Customer Engagement and Retention

Excellent customer service is pivotal to your marketing strategy—happy customers become repeat clients and are more likely to refer others. Launch targeted advertising campaigns to attract new clients, and leverage direct engagement tools like email newsletters or loyalty programs. Encourage reviews and feedback, and be responsive to customer inquiries on every platform. Remember, personal touches can lead to lasting customer relationships.

By aligning your marketing efforts with the values of trust, professionalism, and quality customer interactions, your mobile detailing business is set for success.

5. Building Your Team

Building a Mobile Detailing Team

When starting a mobile detailing business, assembling a skilled team is crucial for delivering quality service and establishing a reputation. Your team should be proficient in detailing techniques and excel in customer interactions to ensure repeat business.

Hiring and Training

Your initial staff will set the precedent for your business venture . Look for candidates with a strong work ethic and attention to detail. Once hired, you should provide comprehensive (and ongoing) training to familiarize them with your business’s standards and procedures. Consider leveraging resources from the International Detailing Association for current detailing certification programs. Training Topics:

  • Detailing techniques and equipment use
  • Customer service principles

  • Product knowledge and safety

Training should be both theoretical and hands-on, allowing your team to apply their skills in real-world situations.

3. choose the legal structure for your car detailing business.

Next you need to choose a legal structure for your car detailing business and register it and your business name with the Secretary of State in each state where you operate your business.

Below are the five most common legal structures:

1) Sole proprietorship

A sole proprietorship is a business entity in which the owner of the car detailing business and the business are the same legal person. The owner of a sole proprietorship is responsible for all debts and obligations of the business. There are no formalities required to establish a sole proprietorship, and it is easy to set up and operate. The main advantage of a sole proprietorship is that it is simple and inexpensive to establish. The main disadvantage is that the owner is liable for all debts and obligations of the business.

2) Partnerships

A partnership is a legal structure that is popular among small businesses. It is an agreement between two or more people who want to open a car detailing business together. The partners share in the profits and losses of the business.

The advantages of a partnership are that it is easy to set up, and the partners share in the profits and losses of the business. The disadvantages of a partnership are that the partners are jointly liable for the debts of the business, and disagreements between partners can be difficult to resolve.

3) Limited Liability Company (LLC)

A limited liability company, or LLC, is a type of business entity that provides limited liability to its owners. This means that the owners of an LLC are not personally responsible for the debts and liabilities of the business. The advantages of an LLC for a car detailing business include flexibility in management, pass-through taxation (avoids double taxation as explained below), and limited personal liability. The disadvantages of an LLC include lack of availability in some states and self-employment taxes.

4) C Corporation

A C Corporation is a business entity that is separate from its owners. It has its own tax ID and can have shareholders. The main advantage of a C Corporation for a car detailing business is that it offers limited liability to its owners. This means that the owners are not personally responsible for the debts and liabilities of the business. The disadvantage is that C Corporations are subject to double taxation. This means that the corporation pays taxes on its profits, and the shareholders also pay taxes on their dividends.

5) S Corporation

An S Corporation is a type of corporation that provides its owners with limited liability protection and allows them to pass their business income through to their personal income tax returns, thus avoiding double taxation. There are several limitations on S Corporations including the number of shareholders they can have among others.

Once you register your car detailing business, your state will send you your official “Articles of Incorporation.” You will need this among other documentation when establishing your banking account (see below). We recommend that you consult an attorney in determining which legal structure is best suited for your company.

4. Secure Startup Funding for Your Car Detailing Business (If Needed)

In developing your car detailing business plan , you might have determined that you need to raise funding to launch your own business.

If so, the main sources of funding for a car detailing business to consider are personal savings, family and friends, credit card financing, bank loans, crowdfunding and angel investors. Angel investors are individuals who provide capital to early-stage businesses. Angel investors typically will invest in a car detailing business that they believe has high potential for growth.

5. Secure a Lease for Your Location

When starting a car detailing business, one of the first things you’ll need to do is find a physical location for your business. There are several factors you’ll need to consider when choosing a location.

First, you’ll need to decide what type of business you want to run. If you want to run a mobile detailing business, you’ll need to find a place to keep all of your detailing supplies and equipment. If you want to open a brick-and-mortar detailing shop, you’ll need to find a space in a busy area with plenty of traffic.

You’ll also need to consider the cost of leasing or buying space. The cost of rent will vary depending on the size of the space you need and where it is located. While leasing may be cheaper than buying property, there are still costs associated with both including maintenance and insurance.

Before signing any leases make sure that the property owner is responsible for paying taxes and insuring the property. You don’t want to be responsible for paying any of those costs after you’ve signed a lease.

Finally you’ll need to consider your budget. Working with a broker or commercial real estate agent may help save you time and money when it comes to renting space for your business.

6. Register Your Car Detailing Business with the IRS

Next, you need to register your business with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) which will result in the IRS issuing you an Employer Identification Number (EIN).

Most banks will require you to have an EIN in order to open up an account. In addition, in order to hire employees, you will need an EIN since that is how the IRS tracks your payroll tax payments.

Note that if you are a sole proprietor without employees, you generally do not need to get an EIN. Rather, you would use your social security number (instead of your EIN) as your taxpayer identification number.

7. Open a Business Bank Account

It is important to establish a bank account in your car detailing business’ name. This process is fairly simple and involves the following steps:

  • Identify and contact the bank you want to use
  • Gather and present the required documents (generally include your company’s Articles of Incorporation, driver’s license or passport, and proof of address)
  • Complete the bank’s application form and provide all relevant information
  • Meet with a banker to discuss your business needs and establish a relationship with them

8. Get a Business Credit Card

You should get a business credit card for your car detailing business to help you separate personal and business expenses.

You can either apply for a business credit card through your bank or apply for one through a credit card company.

When you’re applying for a business credit card, you’ll need to provide some information about your business. This includes the name of your business, the address of your business, and the type of business you’re running. You’ll also need to provide some information about yourself, including your name, Social Security number, and date of birth.

Once you’ve been approved for a business credit card, you’ll be able to use it to make purchases for your business. You can also use it to build your credit history which could be very important in securing loans and getting credit lines for your business in the future.

9. Get the Required Business Licenses and Permits

To start a car detailing business, you’ll need a business license and a permit to operate as a car detailing business. You may also need a zoning permit if your business is located in a residential area. You’ll also need to register with your state’s department of revenue and obtain an employer identification number (EIN) from the IRS. You may need to comply with other local regulations, such as environmental regulations.

10. Get Business Insurance for Your Car Detailing Business

Below are the main types of insurance to consider for your business:

  • General liability insurance : This covers accidents and injuries that occur on your property. It also covers damages caused by your employees or products.
  • Workers’ compensation insurance : If you have employees, this type of policy works with your general liability policy to protect against workplace injuries and accidents. It also covers medical expenses and lost wages.
  • Commercial property insurance : This covers damage to your property caused by fire, theft, or vandalism.
  • Business interruption insurance : This covers lost income and expenses if your business is forced to close due to a covered event.
  • Professional liability insurance : This protects your business against claims of professional negligence.

Find an insurance agent, tell them about your business and its needs, and they will recommend policies that fit those needs.

11. Buy or Lease the Right Car Detailing Business Equipment

The equipment you will need to launch a car detailing business will vary depending on the services you offer. However, some of the basic equipment you will need include cleaning supplies such as buckets, soap, sponges, chamois, and a vacuum cleaner. You will also need towels and microfiber cloths for drying the car.

12. Develop Your Car Detailing Business Marketing Materials

Marketing materials will be required to attract and retain customers to your car detailing business.

The key marketing materials you will need are as follows:

  • Logo: Spend some time developing a good logo for your car detailing business. Your logo will be printed on company stationery, business cards, marketing materials and so forth. The right logo can increase customer trust and awareness of your brand.
  • Website: Likewise, a professional car detailing business website provides potential customers with information about the products and/or services you offer, your company’s history, and contact information. Importantly, remember that the look and feel of your website will affect how customers perceive you.

Is it hard to start a car detailing business?

No, it's not hard to launch a car detailing business. It's all about identifying what type of business you want to open, identifying your target customer, understanding their needs and building a menu of services to meet those needs.

How can I start a car detailing business with no experience?

There are a few things you can do to open a car detailing business with no experience. First, research the industry and learn as much as you can about car detailing. You can also attend workshops and seminars on car detailing to learn the basics. You can also start by offering your services to friends and family members, and gradually expand your business once you have gained some experience.

Is a car detailing business a good idea and/or a good investment?

Yes, a car detailing business is a good idea and a good investment. While starting any new business can be difficult, it is easier when the product or service you are selling is in demand. Detailing services tend to be in high demand due to factors such as quick turnaround times, potentially higher profit margins than other businesses, and relatively low overhead costs compared to other businesses.

Starting a car detailing business requires little to no startup costs if the entrepreneur has the required materials and equipment already on hand, which is not uncommon due to the relative simplicity of most detailing processes. With almost all professional detailers offering their services at affordable prices, it's likely that an entrepreneurial enthusiast could turn a significant profit during their first year in business.

What type of car detailing business is most profitable?

There are a few different types of car detailing businesses that you can start. The most profitable type is the mobile car detailing business. This type of business allows you to go to the customer's house or place of business and detail their car there. You will save rent and lease costs, but will need to invest in a trailer or van that has been converted into a mobile detailing studio. You will also need to invest in some high-quality car care products and equipment.

A full service car detailing business is also profitable.  This type of business allows customers to come in and get a full range of services and buy extras like car care products.

How much does it cost to start a car detailing business?

The cost to open a car detailing business varies depending on the size and scope of the business. However, some basic equipment and supplies needed to get started include:

  • Waxes and polishes
  • Cloths and sponges
  • Spray bottle

What are the ongoing expenses for a car detailing business?

There are a few ongoing expenses that you should expect when running a car detailing business. One of the main expenses is marketing and advertising. You will need to invest in marketing materials such as flyers, business cards, and website design in order to attract new customers. Additionally, you will need to pay for car detailing supplies such as cleaners, waxes, and cloths.

How does a car detailing business make money?

A car detailing business makes money by providing a service that improves the appearance of a customer's car. This typically involves washing, waxing, and polishing the car's exterior, and cleaning the interior. Detailing also includes resealing the interior to improve insulation, among other things.

Is owning a car detailing business profitable?

Yes, a car detailing business is profitable.

One reason car detailing is profitable is because car ownership is very high in the U.S. and further, many people spend money to maintain their vehicles.  Another reason why detailing is profitable is because it can be a relatively easy business to start. There are no special permits or licenses required in most states and all you need to start a detailing business is equipment and some supplies.

Why do car detailing businesses fail?

The main reason is they are not able to make sufficient profit. Auto detailing businesses have low startup costs but high operating costs. If someone starts a car detailing business by themselves, it will be tough to keep up with the demand because of the amount of work needed without hiring employees or outsourcing tasks. Along with this, there is still the problem of not being able to earn enough money from customer's services alone which makes it difficult to expand their business in order for them to maintain their profits rates.

Although there are many pitfalls to starting a car detailing business, it is possible to get around them. If you do your research and prepare for the work ahead of you, you can make more money from customers' services while still being able to save up.

It also helps you identify what makes your business different from others in its industry.

It also helps to include a vision statement so that readers can understand what type of company you want to build.

2. Products & Services Offered by Your Car Detailing Business.

The next step is to outline your products and services for your car detailing business.

When you think about the products and services that you offer, it's helpful to ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is my business?
  • What are the products and/or services that I offer?
  • Why am I offering these particular products and/or services?
  • How do I differentiate myself from competitors with similar offerings?
  • How will I market my products and services?

You may want to do a comparison of your business plan against those of other competitors in the area, or even with online reviews. This way, you can find out what people like about them and what they don’t like, so that you can either improve upon their offerings or avoid doing so altogether.

3. Build a Creative Marketing Stratgey.

If you don't have a marketing plan for your car detailing business, it's time to write one. Your marketing plan should be part of your business plan and be a roadmap to your goals.

A good marketing plan for your car detailing business includes the following elements:

Target market

  • Who is your target market?
  • What do these customers have in common?
  • How many of them are there?
  • How can you best reach them with your message or product?

Customer base

  • Who are your current customers?
  • Where did they come from (i.e., referrals)?
  • How can their experience with your car detailing business help make them repeat customers, consumers, visitors, subscribers, or advocates for other people in their network or industry who might also benefit from using this service, product, or brand?

Product or service description

  • How does it work, what features does it have, and what are its benefits?
  • Can anyone use this product or service regardless of age or gender?
  • Can anyone visually see themselves using this product or service?
  • How will they feel when they do so? If so, how long will the feeling last after purchasing (or trying) the product/service for the first time?

Competitive analysis

  • Which companies are competing with yours today (and why)?
  • Which ones may enter into competition with yours tomorrow if they find out about it now through word-of-mouth advertising; social media networks; friends' recommendations; etc.)
  • What specific advantages does each competitor offer over yours currently?

Marketing channels

  • Which marketing channel do you intend to leverage to attract new customers?
  • What is your estimated marketing budget needed?
  • What is the projected cost to acquire a new customer?
  • How many of your customers do you instead will return?

4. Write Your Operational Plan.

Next, you'll need to build your operational plan. This section describes the type of business you'll be running, and includes the steps involved in your operations.

In it, you should list:

  • The equipment and facilities needed
  • Who will be involved in the business (employees, contractors)
  • Financial requirements for each step
  • Milestones & KPIs
  • Location of your business
  • Zoning & permits required for the business

What equipment, supplies, or permits are needed to run a car detailing business?

To run a Car Detailing business, you will need the following equipment, supplies and permits:

  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Towels, sponges and other cleaning supplies
  • Polishes, waxes and sealants
  • Chemicals and special cleaners
  • Interior cleaning tools such as brushes
  • Pressure washer for exterior cleaning
  • Business license from your local government

5. Management & Organization of Your Car Detailing Business.

The second part of your car detailing business plan is to develop a management and organization section.

This section will cover all of the following:

  • How many employees you need in order to run your car detailing business. This should include the roles they will play (for example, one person may be responsible for managing administrative duties while another might be in charge of customer service).
  • The structure of your management team. The higher-ups like yourself should be able to delegate tasks through lower-level managers who are directly responsible for their given department (inventory and sales, etc.).
  • How you’re going to make sure that everyone on board is doing their job well. You’ll want check-ins with employees regularly so they have time to ask questions or voice concerns if needed; this also gives you time to offer support where necessary while staying informed on how things are going within individual departments too!

6. Car Detailing Business Startup Expenses & Captial Needed.

This section should be broken down by month and year. If you are still in the planning stage of your business, it may be helpful to estimate how much money will be needed each month until you reach profitability.

Typically, expenses for your business can be broken into a few basic categories:

Startup Costs

Startup costs are typically the first expenses you will incur when beginning an enterprise. These include legal fees, accounting expenses, and other costs associated with getting your business off the ground. The amount of money needed to start a car detailing business varies based on many different variables, but below are a few different types of startup costs for a car detailing business.

Running & Operating Costs

Running costs refer to ongoing expenses related directly with operating your business over time like electricity bills or salaries paid out each month. These types of expenses will vary greatly depending on multiple variables such as location, team size, utility costs, etc.

Marketing & Sales Expenses

You should include any costs associated with marketing and sales, such as advertising and promotions, website design or maintenance. Also, consider any additional expenses that may be incurred if you decide to launch a new product or service line. For example, if your car detailing business has an existing website that needs an upgrade in order to sell more products or services, then this should be listed here.

7. Financial Plan & Projections

A financial plan is an important part of any business plan, as it outlines how the business will generate revenue and profit, and how it will use that profit to grow and sustain itself. To devise a financial plan for your car detailing business, you will need to consider a number of factors, including your start-up costs, operating costs, projected revenue, and expenses.

Here are some steps you can follow to devise a financial plan for your car detailing business plan:

  • Determine your start-up costs: This will include the cost of purchasing or leasing the space where you will operate your business, as well as the cost of buying or leasing any equipment or supplies that you need to start the business.
  • Estimate your operating costs: Operating costs will include utilities, such as electricity, gas, and water, as well as labor costs for employees, if any, and the cost of purchasing any materials or supplies that you will need to run your business.
  • Project your revenue: To project your revenue, you will need to consider the number of customers you expect to have and the average amount they will spend on each visit. You can use this information to estimate how much money you will make from selling your products or services.
  • Estimate your expenses: In addition to your operating costs, you will need to consider other expenses, such as insurance, marketing, and maintenance. You will also need to set aside money for taxes and other fees.
  • Create a budget: Once you have estimated your start-up costs, operating costs, revenue, and expenses, you can use this information to create a budget for your business. This will help you to see how much money you will need to start the business, and how much profit you can expect to make.
  • Develop a plan for using your profit: Finally, you will need to decide how you will use your profit to grow and sustain your business. This might include investing in new equipment, expanding the business, or saving for a rainy day.

‍1. Creating a Business Plan is an important Step in Establishing Your New Business

Writing a sound business plan can be a key indicator of future success. Use it as a foundational document to help you grow and thrive and update it occasionally to incorporate new ideas and opportunities. When writing your business plan, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Don't be long-winded, as long plans are less likely to be used as intended
  • Let your passion come alive in the document
  • Know and address your audience
  • Provide supporting documentation and reference data like appendices, customer personas and product demonstrations
  • You can never do enough research
  • Clearly demonstrate why your business is different from the auto detailer down the street
  • Be objective when doing research
  • Avoid jargon and language that customers won't understand
  • Don't be afraid to change it when the industry changes

2. Purchasing Vehicles and Equipment to Start a Car Wash Business

The biggest outlay of money you will have will be the vehicle or vehicles you need to transport your automotive detailing equipment, accessories along with yourself and any employees working for you.

For transportation, you'll need either a cargo van, minivan or a pickup truck. A cargo van is your best choice as these vehicles are manufactured for hauling equipment and supplies. Using a pickup truck can be tricky, as getting the necessary steam cleaning equipment into the flatbed can be tricky. You'll also have to buy a hardtop or a locking tarp to keep your equipment safe when not in use.

Cargo vans or minivans are more accessible, especially when you use a device like the Fortador Cargo Slider, which helps slide your heavy equipment easily in and out of your van. Minivans must also undergo a conversion, either as a DIY project or have professionals convert it for you, adding to the expense.

Mobile Auto Detailing Business Van

2.1 Selecting Your Small Business Work Vehicle

Many new businesses want to save as much money as possible in the initial stages, which is a good idea for an upstart as you'll need money for marketing and advertising. Consider buying a used van that is only several years old, as you can often save $10,000 off the purchase price.

The Ford Transit, Ram ProMaster and Mercedes-Benz Metris are the most popular and widely available cargo vans used to haul mobile car wash cleaning equipment and supplies. New Ford and Ram vans start at about $26,000, while the Mercedes-Benz is much pricier, starting at $34,000. A less expensive new alternative is the Nissan NV200, with a base price of about $24,000. However, you should note that the Nissan van is much smaller. If you are going the used route, try to find vans only a few years old with 40,000 miles or less so the vehicle will still be reliable.

A sound vehicle will also set the stage for the long-term branding of your company via graphics on the side of the van.

2.2 Budgeting for Equipment and Supplies

Car Steam Cleaner for moile auto detailing

The next biggest outlay for your mobile car wash business will be steam cleaning equipment . Consider purchasing a machine with multiple functions like the Fortador PRO Max or PRO Max Deluxe, starting at $10,999. A machine with multiple functions and hoses saves money in the long run. The Pro Plus has both a steaming function and a shampooing/extraction function, along with three hoses to allow use by multiple operators. A less expensive option is the Fortador PRO and PRO Deluxe, starting at $7,499. Upstart small businesses may also consider the Fortador Volt Electra, starting at $7,350.

Other products to consider include the Fortador Cargo Slider at $2,250 or at a discounted $1,750 when purchased with a steamer. Adding a Kevlar Coating kit that will help protect car exteriors and interior seats, carpets and hard surfaces will give your mobile detailing business another service to offer. New business owners should also budget for a starter set of detailing shampoos and other chemicals.

If you ask for funding as part of your car detailing business plan, knowing your exact needs at the startup time is crucial to help investors understand how you intend to make money, and more importantly, where profits will come from and how you intend to pay it back. Don't forget to include the price of insurance, both for your vehicle and for general liability, as well as for health insurance and benefits for employees.

3. General Business Plan Information

All business plans must have certain information that will convince investors that your mobile detailing business is worthy of support. You'll need to include your goals, direction and future planning and should include market research competitor analysis, financial documentation, an overview of your marketing strategy and the cost of licenses and permits. Essential components include:

  • An executive summary that briefly introduces your business and its purpose
  • Company description along with a wider description of the mobile detailing industry
  • Market analysis and opportunity, describing how you will differentiate your business
  • Analysis of your mobile detail competitors
  • Operations, development and management personnel
  • Your marketing plan
  • Financial history and projections

3.1 Profitability of Mobile Car Washing

All business plans require that you show that your intended company will serve a need in your area of operation. Owners can do this by showing how they will fulfill services that consumers need or maybe even don't know they need. One way that you can do this is by coming up with services that no one else provides. If you know of direct competitors in the area, you can counteract their services by packaging them differently.

3.2 Demonstrating Mobile Detailing Profitability

Before starting your new business, you need to organize the types of service you will offer. Create special offers and packages that will make sense to customers. For instance, you may want to offer different packages for customers with cars, recreational vehicles, motorcycles and boats. Developing a professional service program will give your customers an easy way to understand your services, but it is also an essential element of your car detailing business plan.

You can offer exterior and interior services as separate packages, or as full-service detail, or express detail packages. Things to think about include specifying a price range for different size vehicles and extra charges that will apply when a vehicle is extremely dirty. Some services can also be priced separately as add-ons.

3.3 Building Your Menu

Performing market research to determine what competitors in your service area are doing will also help you build your services menu and its pricing. By pricing your packages correctly, you will remain competitive in your market. When you offer services that competitors do not, you give new customers another reason to engage your services while also offering the potential for greater profitability.

Higher-level services like paint restoration, Fortador ceramic coating and stone chip removal are excellent add-on services. Give your audience options for taking care of their vehicles. Bundle services into packages that make sense and offer a la carte services for something specific.

3.3.1. Exterior Detailing

Include the following with descriptions:

  • Exterior detailed wash, nothing that you use a steam cleaner and why you use this method
  • Paint correction and shine restoration, which lets customers consider if their vehicle looks faded
  • Wax services with an express spray or by hand or machine for a long-lasting shine
  • Paint sealant as an alternative to wax to protect the vehicle's exterior
  • Engine wash and detail with a steamer to remove grease and grime
  • Tire and wheel wash and polish to remove brake dust and other build-up
  • Headlight wash to remove insects and dirt
  • Headlight detailing to remove clouding from headlight lenses
  • Running board detailing to remove soil from shoes and the road

Offering Ceramic Coating for Paint Protection

ceramic coating is essential for moile auto detailing

Vehicles fresh from the manufacturer are prime candidates for professional ceramic coating. New paint is an ideal surface for adherence of ceramic coating. Also, your detailers will have less prep work to do. Offering Fortador's Ceramic coating to maintain that fresh factory look is a great selling point for new car buyers. Ceramic coating will also restore the paint of older vehicles to like-new condition. Sell customers on it by noting its protective benefits like:

  • Ultraviolet rays, which cause oxidation and fading
  • Dust and dirt
  • Insect guts
  • Road chemicals
  • Flying debris, such as stones and other hazards

Offering Engine Detailing via Steam Cleaning

Get a step ahead of your competitors by offering engine detailing , as many vehicle owners don't think of cleaning engine components. Keeping the engine clean can maintain a high level of vehicle performance, not to mention increasing fuel performance and overall longevity. Dirt, oil and grease build-up to affect functionality. These substances also work together to hide problems like leaks. Cleaning engine components allows your customers to look for hidden problems, thus saving them money in the long run. Clean engines work in conjunction with overall detailing to give cars overall higher resale value.

3.3.2. Interior Detailing

Cleaning the interior will provide owners with a better overall feeling when riding in their vehicles. Deep cleaning through detailing can transform the interior of a car, making it smell good once again in addition to making it clean. You can also add Kevlar services for the interior packages in your mobile car detailing business. Include the following on your list of interior services as you build your mobile auto detailing business plan:

  • Thorough vacuuming of upholstery, carpets, mats, vinyl protectors and cargo areas to remove loose debris
  • Seat cleaning with a steamer , shampoo and other materials
  • Console cleaning
  • Cell phone holder, cleaned by hand or with a steamer
  • Door panel detailing, with the opportunity to offer protective coating
  • Clean and protect dashboards from UV rays
  • Remove and clean car mats with a steamer or a shampooer/extractor, depending on the material

4. Marketing Your Mobile Car Detailing Business

Marketing strategies are an essential part of your new business plan. Among the elements you will want to use are online media through your company web page, social media and pay-per-click (PPC) advertising. Frequent online postings should be part of your business plan, along with traditional media that includes flyers and mailings to advertise your business locally. Don't forget to include the little details like the cost of business cards and other handouts that you may want to give to prospective customers. Note that some customers, particularly those who are older, need to have something physical in their hands to decide on whether or not to use your detailing service. Brochures and flyers are also a great tool to leave at auto dealerships, repair shops and the like to entice people to contact you to learn more about your detailing packages

5. Including Industry Information

Anyone writing a mobile car detailing business plan should note that the car wash industry has recently increased significantly because of environmental and public health issues. Make sure that you include the latest industry information on your location. One of the most important considerations to note is that mobile car washes provide customers with flexibility and convenience, which is all-important in today's world. The mobile car wash detailing industry is also an easy one to enter, which will be of particular interest to banks and investors. It also needs one of the lowest amounts of capital for a startup business. The more you show that you will have a high chance of success, the more favorably your auto detailing business plan will be received.

6. Other Considerations to Start a Car Wash Business

Don't forget to include all the mundane information like who owns the business, management, the number of technicians needed and what everyone's duties will be. While these details may seem boring, no auto detailing business plan is complete without them.

Most importantly, use your car detailing business plan, as it's not a document to stuff in a drawer once you have funding. Keep your business plan close at hand and refer to it when you need to make decisions about your company's long-term future.

How to Start a Mobile Detailing Business: Zero to $6k a Month

Josh Belk

Josh Belk is a full-time college student, he works full-time in web design, and in what little spare time, he’s started a $6,000 a month mobile detailing business with his younger brother.

This idea came about when Josh connected the dots between obsession and opportunity.

On the obsession side, Josh would always see his brother out in the driveway cleaning his car.

On the opportunity side, he received an email about business ideas anyone could start, and mobile car washing was one of them.

He asked his brother if he wanted to team up to see if they could make some money cleaning cars — and with that, Belk Mobile Detailing was born.

  • landed their first mobile detailing customers
  • price their service

“Friends and family is key,” Josh told me when talking about starting out.

Their mom was very supportive and involved when they first started their business. She sent out text messages to her friends and family, and posted on Facebook about their new venture.

This resulted in a few paying customers, which was what the brothers needed to begin reaching more people.

“We used those people for great marketing materials, like before and after pictures, and to help establish some good first reviews,” Josh explained. “Reviews are everything in this business.”

Mobile Detailing Startup Costs

While mobile detailing is a relatively low startup cost business , there are a few things that are really important to have.

  • Bucket and wash mitt – You can pick up a regular bucket for around $5. Josh paid $30 for one that helps separate the shampoo and water.
  • Pressure washer – Josh started out without a pressure washer, but it made his job so much easier when he invested in one. He spent about $170, and it’s battery-powered in case he can’t plug it on on site.
  • Towels and brushes – You’ll need plenty of these while cleaning cars.
  • Cleaning products – The main products Josh uses is a degreaser , spray wax , and tire shine . All are key products to get a vehicle looking its best.
  • Extractor – Josh said an extractor is a critical part of the interior detailing. He spent about $120 for the one he uses.
  • Steamer – This helps to get into the tight spots in the console area, door panels, leather seats, and so on.
  • Vacuum – Josh uses a Shop Vac that cost about $40.

All totaled up, Josh estimated spending $400-600 on equipment.

You may not need to incorporate your business, but it might make sense to get a business credit card to keep business expenses separate from your personal expenses.

You’ll also want some sort of general liability insurance to protect yourself against accidentally damaging a customer’s vehicle. Check out CoverWallet for competitive business insurance quotes.

Growth in Mobile Detailing Demand

“Most of the time, for our customers, it’s their first time having a detail done,” Josh told me.

Even though people are driving less today, they’re keeping their vehicles longer, which translates into more spending on care and maintenance .

Car wash and detailing is a highly localized industry. According to IBISWorld , it’s a $10 billion industry where no single company commands more than 5% market share nationally.

Who Buys Detailing Service?

Josh said most of their individual first-time customers find them either through:

  • seeing their Facebook ads
  • Googling “detailing services” or “mobile car washing” near them
  • word-of-mouth

Josh also gets ongoing work from a local dealership. He likes this as it’s consistent, ongoing work, and they typically call him 3-4 times a week.

At first, Belk Mobile Detailing priced very low. Josh recalled charging their first customers $30 for a full interior and exterior detail, which took about two hours.

(They listed their price as $50, but discounted it by $20 for the first few jobs.)

At that low rate, they actually questioned if it was even worth it. But Josh explained that it was only temporary since they needed to get some experience under their belts, reviews, and marketing photos.

Once they started seeing regular customers, Josh steadily raised their prices from $50 to $70, then $100, $120, and now their pricing looks like this:

  • $90 for an interior detail
  • $50 for an exterior detail
  • $140 for a full detail

These are in line with national averages , but Josh also explained those are starting rates. He tells every customer that they need to inspect their vehicle to provide an accurate quote.

Since some vehicles require a lot more time and work than others, the quote process also gives them the opportunity to talk to the customer through all their options.

At the end of the day, Josh said he aims for an effective rate of $40-50 an hour  — not a bad way to make money in college !

Despite his young age, mobile detailing wasn’t actually Josh’s first side hustle attempt. He’d previously dabbled in e-commerce with Amazon FBA .

While he called that business a failure, having lost around $3,000, the silver lining was he learned some important business lessons.

Among those was the importance of customer reviews, and making it as easy as possible for them to leave a review.

Before they even did their first job, Josh had links ready to go that would send the customer directly to a review page on either Facebook or Google.

Once the work is complete, he sends the customer the link and asks if they would take the time to leave a review.

Josh said he’s noticed the number of positive reviews on Google impacting their organic exposure. They currently get around 5-7 calls a week from organic Google traffic. A couple months ago, that number was zero.

I asked Josh if he was concerned about local competition before entering the mobile detailing market.

“There are a ton of other detailers,” Josh told me. But most car wash competitors either charged a lot more, or weren’t mobile.

A huge selling point for Belk is that they’ll come out and detail their customer’s cars at their home, place of work, or wherever else they are.

He also noticed a lot of businesses had negative reviews. Josh knew by offering an awesome service and getting positive reviews he could position his business ahead of his competitors.

If they do receive feedback from a customer that the job wasn’t up to par, Josh said they go back out at no extra charge and make it right.

“We’ve never had a bad review because of that. We always make it right,” Josh told me.

Marketing a Mobile Detailing Service with Facebook Ads

The first Facebook ads campaign Josh ran was a New Year’s contest, where the winner would get a free car wash every month for a year. All people had to do to enter was submit their email.

This captured about 50 leads, but the randomly-selected winner didn’t actually want the prize! Still looking to leverage these new leads, Josh emailed those 50 people who’d entered and offered them 50% off mobile detailing service.

Only one person took him up on the offer, but they were able to use the vehicle for some marketing pictures, and got another referral job for their work.

Looking back, “that was an unsuccessful Facebook ad campaign,” Josh told me.

Undeterred, Josh then ran a Valentine’s Day special for a $59.99 gift card — good for an interior detail and exterior wash.

This time, he spent about $80 but sold about $600 worth of gift cards sales. The exposure earned Belk some indirect business too.

In May, they ran another gift card sale, this time for Mother’s Day. Josh said this was their most successful campaign yet.

Between the 3rd-9th of May, Josh spent $67 on Facebook ads to drive $2,200 in gift card sales.

And those gift cards? He designed a template in Canva and emailed a printable version to the buyers.

Other Marketing Channels

Josh has dabbled with Google ads targeting “Automotive detailing” in his area. This hasn’t done much for him, so he’s focusing more on building up organic traffic.

He also spent $50 running a campaign on the NextDoor app. He didn’t have anyone reach out from that effort, but he sees potential in this app and will try again in the future.

Josh and his teenage brother have also knocked on doors and handed out fliers. It as good for the experience, he explained, but didn’t generate any leads.

Josh and his brother have had a few friends help out with the detailing labor, but admitted it’s been a challenge.

Since the volume of work isn’t always consistent, many helpers went on to find full-time work elsewhere.

Josh told me he’s been using Square to manage his appointments, tax stuff, and payments.

He’s been really happy with the software, and they even sent him a free credit card reader.

“With this business model, the sky’s the limit,” Josh told me.

Josh said there’s so much room for growth down the road. They could start offering auto repairs, tire changes, just about anything auto-related.

With that said, he started this business with his brother in mind, and plans to hand the business over to his brother at some point in the future. Josh is about to graduate and plans to start a career as a full-time financial advisor.

He also wants to start a community for other student entrepreneurs and help other young entrepreneurs get started.

“Consistency always wins.”

Oh my goodness this is what I need to send to my partner for our mobile detailing business lol. I’m working with him on our marketing, but he’s hesitant on forming the LLC and getting insurance for literally no reason (anxiety issues lol). I keep telling him he’ll be screwed if he doesn’t get either if he were to wreck a clients vehicle or cause some kind of damage….We just made our site https://www.cardetailingyumaaz.com/ . It’s not much but it’s starting to get the job done. Also he keeps forgetting to get reviews, so I’ll have him use some of the techniques y’all implemented to make it easier.

Bro your site is so well made!!!! And yeah we’re having the same problem getting reviews. We reach out to our clients. They say they’ll do it, but just whined up never getting around to it. We just got done with our site! I’m proud of it :) https://www.cardetailingsanangelotx.com/

I would say you were right on point for getting your own business started! I started my mobile detailing business: Integrity Mobile Detailing @ https://www.integritymobiledetailing757.com/ four years ago and it has grown exponentially. With regards to the pricing structure, I’d recommend looking at other established mobile detailing companies relative to your areas to give you a price point rather than guessing. If you go to low, you’ll probably see more work than you can handle and will result in untimely bookings or bad reviews and too high, may be a turn off to potential clients. Just my .02 cents, otherwise, great write!

Yes, this is exactly what I needed for a good laugh while learning some new things. When I first started off, I had a few clients here and there and we were doing payment through Zelle – it can be convenient but no the most responsive and easy thing to use, especially since most don’t use it. I ended up going to stripe with some other integrations but found it a bit complicated, especially with all the denied payments. Square, well, let’s see it’s a mobile detailer’s heaven.

Anyways, two issues we had was our website: https://www.newportnewsmobiledetailing.com/ as we simply couldn’t get the forms set up to sync with scheduling program and second, was all the detailers in our area. We ended up hiring a free lancer on Upwork who handled the integration for like $80. Lastly, in order to make our company stand out, we ended up changing our hours to be available EVERY SINGLE DAY and just splitting shifts. It gave us a huge edge so like it is said, you HAVE to make yourself stand out, otherwise you will have a competitive edge over established competitors. Great write up!

I have 95% of what I need to start done. I’m almost ready to launch, but the only thing keeping me is a phone number! Sounds silly right? I don’t want to give out my personal cell for business. So what is the best way to do this? An app? Buy a cheap pay as you go phone? Any info would help!

Is this a serious question? Just get a dual sim phone and put another sim card in it or buy a second hand phone that you will use just for calls so it doesn’t have to be a fancy one. You don’t need a monthly subscription, get a top-up sim card, you’ll be mostly receiving calls on it anyway, so just keep it active.

Hi Tiffany,

This response is might be too late and you probably made the decision already. Don’t feel that your alone in this. I also went through a silly debate with myself if I needed to get a separate number or not in the beginning. My advise is to get a separate line. Its always wise to separate business from personal calls. Its easy to track and record business calls. This is important when your building your customer portfolio. Take a bundle offer from a phone provider to get good deals, most of them are very cheap these days. Its also good if you want to exit this business in the future, at least you wont get bothered.

Hope this helps.

Marketing Analysis of auto detailing business

The most important component of an effective car detailing business plan is its accurate marketing analysis. On the other hand, if you are starting a car detailing business on a larger scale, it is always best to seek the counsel of marketing experts.

The success or failure of a business totally depends upon its marketing strategy which can only be developed on the basis of accurate marketing analysis.

Therefore, it must be considered before you think about how to start car detailing business . Samuel acquired the services of marketing experts to carry out the marketing analysis for his mobile auto detailing business plan .

5.1 Market & Industry Trends

Immigration business plan.

Before you start an auto detailing business , you must analyze whether the market is feasible for startups or not. For analyzing the market trends, you can also take help from this car detailing business plan template . According to IBISWorld, the car wash and auto detailing industry generate $11 billion in revenue every year in the United States. As of 2018, there are more than 65,000 businesses in this industry which are responsible for employing more than 212,000 people in the United States. The number of car wash and auto detailing companies has been increasing over the past years while the industry is growing at an estimated rate of 3.1%. Considering the number of established businesses in this industry, the environment has become extremely competitive especially for the startups. Starting an auto detailing business is easy but sustaining it and making it profitable is something which can only be achieved by impeccable planning and effective marketing.

5.2 Marketing Segmentation

Our primary target market is the residential community living in San Jose. Nearly all people based in the area have their own vehicles either new or leased. Our secondary market will be the car dealerships located in the vicinity. Our experts have identified the following type of target audience which can become our future consumers:

The detailed marketing segmentation of our target audience is as follows:

5.2.1 New car owners:

This group comprises of customers who have recently bought a new car. These customers are very conscious about their cars and want them to look new as long as possible. Our detailing services will provide the perfect solution to them. In addition to exterior and interior detailing, these customers are also expected to have their vehicles ceramic coated by us for preserving their new look.

5.2.2 Sports car owners:

Many young and middle-aged men in the neighborhood own expensive sports cars. These people will also need our services for maintaining the exquisite looks of their expensive vehicles.

5.2.3 Luxury car owners:

Luxury car owners have totally different requirements and they can easily spend a lot of cash for maintaining their high-end expensive cars and keeping them in the best possible shape. These customers prefer quality to cost that’s why we will offer premium packages for them.

5.2.4 Local businesses:

Since we will be located in the main commercial district of the city, we will be surrounded by several companies and local businesses, most of which have fleets of small vans and cars. Although these businesses own a lot of cars, their contribution to our revenue and sales will be negligible since they seldom require car detailing services.

5.2.5 Dealerships:

There are 5 car dealerships within 6 miles of our location. These car dealers sell old as well as new cars and need their cars to be in the best possible state. That’s why they will regularly require our auto detailing services. The detailed market analysis of our potential customers is given in the following table:

5.3 Packages Pricing

Considering the competitive environment, we have priced all our services in the similar ranges as of our competitors except for the interior detailing. While many of our competitors offer interior detailing services for about $100 on average, we have priced this service in relatively lower ranges. This is done to achieve a competitive advantage since interior detailing is the most frequently availed detailing service. Our services are priced as follows:

  • Exterior detailing starting at $50
  • Interior detailing starting at $80
  • Waxing & paint correction starting at $200
  • Ceramic coating starting at $400

The pricing varies with the type of car and will generally be 30% more for SUVs and trucks.

5.4 Target of the Company

Our main business targets to be achieved as milestones over the course of next three years are as follows:

  • To become the best auto detailing service in San Jose within next five years of launch by providing high-quality services
  • To achieve the net profit margin of $10k per month by the end of the first year, $15k per month by the end of the second year, and $25k per month by the end of the third year
  • To balance the initial cost of the startup with earned profits by the end of the second year

After identifying the market demand, market trends, and the potential customers of the startup, the next step is to define an effective strategy for business attracting those customers.

Like marketing analysis, sales strategy is also an important component of a mobile car detailing business startup and must be properly planned before you think about to start your own car detailing business .

6.1 Competitive Analysis

As mentioned earlier, there are more than 65,000 similar businesses in the United States and for surviving in such intensely competitive environment, one needs to have certain competitive advantages. Our biggest competitive advantage is our location which is nearly ideal to start mobile car detailing business . We are located in the main commercial district but the residential zone is just at a ten minutes’ drive from us. Secondly, we have priced our interior detailing service in relatively lower ranges as compared to our competitors so as to promote our sales and build trust among customers. Another aspect which will distinguish us from other similar businesses will be our unparalleled and exceptional customer service. At our company, all esteemed customers and their valuable vehicles will be dealt with utmost respect and care.

6.2 Sales Strategy

After carrying out a detailed analysis, our experts came up with the following brilliant ideas to advertise and sell our services.

  • We will advertise our company on social media.
  • We will make a company webpage by which our customers can make a reservation with us.
  • We will offer various discounts on special occasions to attract new customers.
  • We will initially offer 20% discount on all services for first three months.

6.3 Sales Monthly

6.4 sales yearly, 6.5 sales forecast, personnel plan.

Personnel plan is also an important component of a car detailing business plan since it gives you an estimate of the staff required for your startup as well as the costs incurred on their salaries. So, make sure to duly consider it before thinking about how to start a car detailing business . The personnel plan of ProStar Auto Detailers is as follows.

7.1 Company Staff

Samuel will act as the General Manager of the company and will initially hire following people:

  • 1 Accountant for maintaining financial and other records
  • 2 Sales Executives responsible for marketing and discovering new ventures
  • 10 Workers for manually washing the cars and providing detailing services
  • 3 Technicians for operating the equipment and machines
  • 1 Driver for driving the mobile van to customers
  • 1 Technical Assistant for managing the company’s official website and social media pages
  • 1 Customer Representative for interacting with customers

To ensure the best quality service, all employees will be selected through vigorous testing and will be trained for a month before starting their jobs. Since the traffic for car detailing service varies month to month so part-time workers will also be hired to facilitate the company staff in the busy summer months.

7.2 Average Salary of Employees

The following table shows the forecasted data about the salaries of the employees for the next three years:

Financial Plan

The last component of car detailing business plan is an in-depth financial plan. The financial plan crafts a detailed map of all the expenses needed for the startup and how these expenses will be met by the earned profits. It is recommended that you hire a financial expert for guiding you through all financial aspects needed to be considered for starting an auto detailing business . The company will be financed by Samuel himself and he will control the direction of the business to make sure that it is expanding at the forecasted rate. As for the car detailing business start up , no equity funding or outside loan will be required. With the help of financial experts, Samuel has developed the following financial plan for his auto detailing start up business , which outlines the financial development of ProStar Auto Detailers over the next three years.

8.1 Important Assumptions

The financial projections of the company are forecasted on the basis of following assumptions. These assumptions are quite conservative and are expected to show deviation but to a limited level such that the company’s major financial strategy will not be affected.

8.2 Brake-even Analysis

8.3 projected profit and loss, 8.3.1 profit monthly, 8.3.2 profit yearly, 8.3.3 gross margin monthly, 8.3.4 gross margin yearly, 8.4 projected cash flow, 8.5 projected balance sheet, 8.6 business ratios.
