19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned..

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. The importance of traditions.

Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.

2. How to be thankful for family and friends.

No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.

3. How to give back.

When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.

4. What the word "community" really means.

Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.

5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.

People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.

6. The consequences of making bad choices.

Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.

7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.

Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.

8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.

While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.

9. How to be my own, individual person.

In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.

10. How to work for what I want.

Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.

11. How to be great at giving directions.

If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.

12. How to be humble .

My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.

13. To be well-rounded.

Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.

14. How to be great at conflict resolution.

In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.

15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.

One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.

16. To be prepared for anything.

You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.

17. That you don't always have to do it alone.

It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.

18. How to be creative.

When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

6 Ways to Shake Off the Workday So It Doesn’t Ruin Your Precious Evening

When I’m working, I hyperfocus on the task at hand. If I’m writing an article—like this one, for example—I sit down at my desk around 8:30 a.m., conduct a couple of interviews, research the topic I’m covering, and then hunch over my keyboard like a gremlin, typing away until the end of the work day, which, for me, is usually around 5 or 6 p.m. I get absolutely absorbed—so much so that when it’s time to shut my laptop and make dinner , I seriously struggle with transitioning out of work mode. I continue to think about how I want to edit specific sentences or what else I need to do to hit my deadline as I join my husband on the couch and descend into the evening.

I’m not alone here: People rant about this all the time on Reddit , claiming it’s impossible to relax and unwind after work ; their brains can’t let go. “For a lot of people, the projects aren’t done at the end of the day,” Ashley Smith, PhD , a psychologist in Kansas City, Missouri, who specializes in anxiety and stress, tells SELF. “You can always be thinking about them or checking your email or doing more. You don’t have an off switch.” The pressure! It never ends!

If you’re mentally preparing for your next 1:1 with your manager or how you should fine-tune a presentation while doing the dishes, you’re technically still working, Cassidy Dallas, LICSW , a therapist in Westford, Massachusetts, who specializes in anxiety and work-life balance, tells SELF. Not only can this stress you out and exhaust you —but it can prevent you from being fully present in whatever you have going on after hours, like hanging out with your partner or catching up on Bridgerton. The result: You won’t be as happy, relaxed, and social if your mind’s still on the job, Dallas says.

So, if you’ve been lurking around the above subreddits desperately in search of tips to salvage your evening (just me?), you’ve come to the right place. Below, you’ll find six expert-approved ways to snap out of work mode so you can (god forbid) enjoy your life.

1. Tell your coworkers you’re— really, actually —logging off.

While some workplaces expect employees to respond to emails immediately and around the clock (I’m shaking), in many cases, that’s not actually a job requirement—and you might be unnecessarily putting that pressure on yourself, Dr. Smith says. So she recommends getting clarity about your employer’s expectations; your boss might be totally cool with you being MIA at night.

Ask your teammates if you’re supposed to be responsive or if it’s NBD to log off. And if the work-life lines are unclear (or you can no longer deal with the non-stop pings), do your best to set your own boundaries: Let your coworkers know you’ll be unavailable in the evenings; if they need you for anything urgent, they can call instead of messaging you. That way, you’ll be less tempted to keep refreshing your email or checking Slack. “It will make it easier to let work go when it’s like, ‘Nope, I don’t do work after 6 p.m. That’s my time,’” Dr. Smith says.

2. Do a body scan.

The first thing Dallas recommends doing when you clock out? A three-to-five-minute body scan (which, by the way, you can easily practice on your commute home if you take public transportation). Here’s how this simple mindfulness exercise works: Bring your full attention to every part of your body, from your face all the way down to your toes, and take notice of any sensations you feel. For example: Do your shoulders feel tense or is your jaw tight? Is your stomach grumbling? Are you thirsty?

When you’re at work, you’re probably not fully in tune with your body, Dallas says. Maybe you were mentally immersed in a high-stress meeting or pushing yourself physically at a construction site. A body scan pulls you into the present moment: Instead of ruminating about the crummy feedback your boss gave you, for example, you’re forced to focus on physical sensations, instead. In short: It’ll help you get out of your head.

3. Turn off your notifications.

I know it’s scary, but if you can silence notifications on your phone, that will help you salvage your evening, according to Dr. Smith. Even better: Move your email and/or messaging app away from your home screen too. If you can’t hear or see the alerts, they’ll be less likely to disrupt dinner with your partner or your evening walk .

Studies show that notifications are distracting: Even if you don’t respond to them, merely noticing them on your screen (or hearing the ping) can stress you out and pull you out of the moment. “If you see that little red circle with the number in it on your phone, even if you don’t check the email, you have to do the work of deciding not to look at it,” Dr. Smith says. Keeping these little alerts out of sight (and mind) gives you a chance to disconnect and clear your head—“otherwise, it’s like being on call all of the time,” she adds.

4. Feed at least one of your five senses.

If you, like me, get mentally engrossed in your work, tapping into your senses—sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touch—can bring you back into the real world after you’ve been dissociating on Zoom for hours or interacting with customers all day with no downtime.

There are a ton of ways to go about this. One of Dallas’s favorite suggestions is to take a steamy shower or bath—or if that sounds like a chore, simply splash hot or cold water on your face. Light a scented candle or listen to a relaxing playlist . Take a stroll in a park or sit on your porch or in your yard. In my case, walking my dog around my neighborhood for half an hour helps me stop fixating on all the emails I could be sending—sure, it takes a few minutes for me to shake off my thoughts but by the middle of the walk, I can’t help myself from watching him cutely trot on the sidewalk and listening in on other people’s conversations (oops).

Getting outside is huge: Being surrounded by swaying trees, chirping birds , and floating clouds—or, hey, maybe honking cars and screaming children if you live near me—is like “bathing in sensory input,” research suggests . The goal is to “get yourself in a space where there is some kind of sensory transition between work and home,” Dallas explains.

Basically, by activating your senses , you shift your attention away from the pressures and demands of your job to, say, how warm water feels on your face or how the wind hits your skin. “It tells your brain on a subconscious level that you are done with work,” Dallas says.

5. Let yourself completely tap out.

Depending on your work schedule, it may be too late to take a nap (a brief 6 p.m. snooze can obliterate your chances of getting a restful sleep overnight, studies show) but you can still benefit from lying down in bed or on a couch with your eyes closed for 15 to 30 minutes. This certainly does the trick for me—before I can get into a TV show or book after my workday, I need to lie down and decompress (i.e. not talk to anyone) for 20 minutes or so. If I don’t, my mind continues to buzz for hours. I have a much easier time shifting gears when I’m able to shut myself off from the world for a bit.

A short mental break—what some doctors call “waking rest”—can be mentally rejuvenating, evidence suggests. It may help you clear your head and stop stressing, for a little while at least, about tomorrow’s back-to-back meetings. As Dallas puts it, “It lets your body know you can rest—that it’s okay to rest .”

6. Create a personal post-work ritual.

Another strategy that can liberate you from the grind: Create your own little ritual that you can look forward to after work. For example, if you still have the energy to be social (you’re doing better than I am), schedule something you have to show up for, like trivia, a ceramics class, or yoga, suggests. “Play and other activities send the message that we don't have to be in ‘survival mode’ and we are safe to rest and connect with each other and ourselves,” Dallas says. If you’re feeling particularly zapped, keep it low-effort: Brew a hot cup of herbal tea, listen to a chill but entertaining podcast , or change into supercomfy loungewear. These little habits serve as a reminder that your workday is buttoned up and you’re moving on, Dr. Smith says. Your mind will, over time, associate this activity with the end of your workday and you’ll automatically start to check out from the rat race when you do it.

One last, very important tip: If any of the above strategies feel overwhelming, skip them—you don’t want your wind-down routine to feel like more work (you know, the thing you’re trying to escape from), Dallas says.

I understand how freaking hard it can be to have a peaceful night if you’ve been grinding all day. As I near the end of this article—and, therefore, the end of my workday—I know I’m going to mull over the edits I want to make for the next hour or so. I can’t help myself! But, thanks to my chats with Dallas and Dr. Smith, I also know that for the sake of my evening (and well-being), I need to log off and forget about writing—until tomorrow at least. So if you’ll excuse me now, my dog is demanding that I take him on a walk and pay attention to him instead.

T-Mobile Acquires USCellular in $4.4 Billion Deal: 'Even More Consumers Will Benefit' The deal was announced on Tuesday.

T-Mobile has agreed to a blockbuster deal to purchase the majority of USCellular in an estimated $4.4 billion acquisition.

As part of the agreement, T-Mobile will pay cash and up to $2 billion of USCellular's debt, depending on the agreement reached between T-Mobile and US Cellular's debt holders upon closing.

The new deal will give UScellular customers access to T-Mobile's 5G technology, pre-existing plans, and customer service operations. Areas previously uncovered by USCellular will also now be accessible to existing customers through T-Mobile.

T-Mobile said that the merger will drive competition among other rival companies.

"With this deal, T-Mobile can extend the superior Un-carrier value and experiences that we're famous for to millions of UScellular customers and deliver them lower-priced, value-packed plans and better connectivity on our best-in-class nationwide 5G network," said Mike Sievert, CEO of T-Mobile, in a company release . "As customers from both companies will get more coverage and more capacity from our combined footprint, our competitors will be forced to keep up – and even more consumers will benefit."

USCellular said in a separate release that the new agreement will hand over all of its wireless operations to T-Mobile, including those in "underserved" and "rural" areas who previously had little connectivity.

"The decisions we announced today are in the best interests of our customers and our shareholders," said Laurent Therivel, CEO of UScellular. "We are committed to serving the needs of our customers and supporting our associates as we work to complete the transaction."

T-Mobile's acquisition of USCellular was unanimously recommended by the independent directors of USCellular and unanimously voted for approval by USCellular's Board of Directors and the Board of Directors of TDS, which owns 83% of USCellular's shares.

T-Mobile had a strong Q1 2024 , reporting a net income of $2.4 billion, a 22% increase from the same period last year. The wireless company also saw a 4% year-over-year increase in service revenue, an estimated $16.1 billion.

"Our model is working. It's consistent. And our confidence in it only builds with each passing quarter of success," Sievert said in an earnings call at the time. "We remain focused on continuing to take share in wireless and broadband while delivering industry-leading growth in service revenue, profitability and cash flows."

USCellular was up over 12% in a 24-hour period upon the news of the acquisition as of late Tuesday afternoon.

Potential trophy celebration for Celtics among ideas keeping Pacers motivated

INDIANAPOLIS -- Rick Carlisle held back nothing in his pursuit of motivational material for the Pacers as they face a 3-0 series deficit in the Eastern Conference finals against the No. 1 seed Celtics heading into Monday's Game 4 at 8 p.m. Gainbridge Fieldhouse. He even tried to make obvious contingency planning seem disrespectful.

"When you're the head coach of an NBA team, you tend to get information on things," Carlisle said. "One thing I just heard in the last few minutes is that the league is making logistical plans for a trophy presentation on our floor (Monday). That's something that I think should make our players' blood boil and our fans' blood boil. It's just another layer of motivation to extend the series."

Deadpan is Carlisle's default setting and he didn't break character to let on if he was making a joke about that being privileged information, but it obviously doesn't require sources in high places to know that once a team wins three games in a best-of-seven series with a trophy on the line, the NBA or any league for that matter has to be prepared to present that trophy at every game that follows regardless of the teams involved or the locations of those games. If the Pacers were up 3-1 going into TD Garden for Game 5, the NBA would make plans for a trophy presentation there too.

Carlisle's players know this and so do Pacers' fans, but Carlisle's still banking on the visual embedding in their minds of what a Celtics celebration at Gainbridge Fieldhouse would look like and producing a visceral reaction to prevent it from happening.

It also allows the Pacers to go after an obtainable goal as Step 1 in their attempt at achieving one that has to date been unachievable in the NBA.

No team in the league has ever come back to win a series after falling behind 3-0. The Celtics rallied back from 3-0 against the Heat in last year's Eastern Conference finals to force a Game 7, but they were pounded 103-84 once they got there. The 2004 Boston Red Sox are the only Major League Baseball team to rally back from 3-0 and four NHL teams have done it, but those are the only instances in the history of major North American sports.

But several teams have managed to win one game to extend the series and it's easier for a team to stay focused on achieving a manageable goal rather than one that has been to date insurmountable.

"There's plenty of reasons to be motivated for this game tomorrow," Carlisle said.

The Pacers also did walk away from Saturday night's loss with some reasons for confidence. They were missing All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton thanks to hamstring soreness, but the first half served as a reminder that they won six of the 10 games in January he missed when working through a strain of the same hamstring. They led by as many as 18 points and had a 69-57 lead at halftime, shooting 63.6% from the floor in the first half.

The Pacers faded in the fourth quarter when they were outscored 33-21 and they blew an eight-point lead in the last 2:38, but they won the rebounding battle 43-36 and made more shots than the Celtics did, proving that even without their best player they can hang in with the NBA's best team.

"There are a lot of correctible things that we've got to get better," Carlisle said. "There are some mistakes defensively that are fixable and some things offensively that we have to do better. We did a lot of things very very well. We led for a great majority of the game. There certainly are positives. So we always show our guys things that need to be corrected but also always show our guys the things we do well and that we need to continue to do well."

Carlisle refused to provide an update on Haliburton's hamstring and status for Game 4 -- "I'm not going to talk about that today," he said -- but Saturday night was proof that the Pacers have two viable point guards behind him who can score. T.J. McConnell , who has manned the second unit all year, scored 23 points on 10 of 17 shooting. Andrew Nembhard , a point guard by trade who has functioned as a secondary ball-handler in the nominal shooting guard position, started in Haliburton spot and scored 32 points while dishing out nine assists.

"He's played plenty of point guard for us," Carlisle said. "There have been stretches when Ty's been unable to play both last year and this year. He has experience there. Guys who put the work in and are prepared tend to have more confidence because they've done the work. He's one of those guys, and our team really as a group, we have really conscientious guys who are great workers who love to compete."

And whether they focus on his visual of a Celtics trophy presentation or not, he knows they'll be motivated by the prospect of earning themselves one more opportunity to compete together.

"The important thing for us is to learn, to be resilient and stay in this fight and find a way to extend the series," Carlisle said. "We want to keep playing. We want to get back on that plane and go back to Boston. Tomorrow is our opportunity to do that."

Seminar topics focus on exciting and important questions that provide students with the opportunity to explore issues, gather and evaluate evidence, and develop their ideas through writing. By participating in a First-Year or Transfer Seminar, students develop essential academic skills that they will use throughout their time at KU.

ANTH 177 - Indigenous Traditions of Latin America

Meet the instructor...brent metz, where you know me from… .

I am currently the Director of the Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies and Professor of Anthropology.  Among the courses I have taught recently are “Varieties of Human Experience”, “Indigenous Traditions of Latin America”, “Indigenous Development in Latin America”, “Mexamerica: Mexico-U.S. Relations”, and “Field Methods in Cultural Anthropology.”  I have taught 24 different course titles in my career, including on gender, folklore, religion, Central American cultures, South American cultures, Intellectual Heritage, Anthropological Theory, Global Indigenous Movements, Ethnography, and more. 

I was a first-generation college student and only had my uncle to rely on for experience. My high school guidance counselor shepherded me into engineering because I was good at math and science and there were plenty of well-paying job opportunities for engineers. I wasn’t really interested in engineering, though. I wanted to be a pilot, but hopes of that were “shot down” when I failed gain entrance into a military academy or win an ROTC scholarship. While I won some small state and university scholarships at Western Michigan University and entered its Honors College, I was starting with lack of confidence, indecision, and social awkwardness. But I was determined to make the best of the experience and took college more seriously than my friends. Without the interruptions of family, friends, and pets back home, I actually found college to be easier than high school. By the end of my first year, I switched majors from Industrial Engineering to History. 

Find and set aside physical space and time for studying if you want to get the most out of your education. KU offers many activities for an enriching student experience, and you should take advantage of some of those, but protect your study time if you expect to keep up with your classes, instead of cramming for exams, which almost never ends well.  College is about building skills for careers, so take advantage now or you’ll regret it later. Social relationships, though, are a fundamental part of those skills. Find a balance. 

When you visit my office…

You will undoubtedly find me very busy with teaching, advising, service to a variety of disadvantaged populations, and more, but I will drop everything to give you your money’s worth of advising. My advisors provided crucial career and emotional support, and I feel an obligation and satisfaction to pass that on. 

I’ve been so busy lately that I haven’t been streaming in several weeks.  I think the past series I was watching in March was The Crown.  I like sci fi and movies and series that take provocative twists and turns. 

You may be surprised to know… 

I played on the University of Michigan’s ultimate frisbee/disc team.  We made it to the finals (along with KU) 2 years in a row and won the national championship in 1990. I also speak Spanish and Ch’orti’ Maya fluently. Ch’orti’ is the descendent language of that spoken by Classic Maya elites. 

Furry Family Members (Or not so furry)… 

I love all kinds of animals, had cats and dogs growing up, and had 2 dogs until about a decade ago when my first of 2 daughters was born.  I haven’t been able to manage pets and kids both with all the travel I’m doing. My wife is from Mexico, and we travel to Mexico twice per year for a total of 4-6 weeks. Spanish is our first language in the home, although I grew up speaking English in rural Michigan. 

My softball teammates from Topeka insisted I go to a concert with them at Liberty Hall on May 3.  I was too busy to investigate the 4 bands.  Turned out they were metal and punk bands.  By accident, I ended up in the mash pit and was banged around all over the place.  Someone cut the back of my legs out from under me, sending me backwards over another guy’s back down some stairs and landing on my back.  A complete 5400.  2 other large men proceeded to fall on top of me like bowling pins.  Fortunately, no major injuries.  I’ll do my research next time. 

BIOL 176 - Being Human at KU

The importance of making connections is vital for success in college, especially for freshman students as it build a community of support while transitioning to life at a large institution like KU. Furthermore, a relationship-rich education promotes collaboration and mentorship among university students, staff, and faculty, while contributing personal growth and wellness.  

This first year seminar will promote forming meaningful connections through broad discussions of belonging. Being Human at KU is an interactive course that introduces first year KU students to student services, campus museums, and support staff and faculty teaching large enrollment courses at KU to explore issues related to inclusion and belonging at the University of Kansas and beyond. The course combines academic inquiry, individual stories, field trips and community engagement opportunities to provide students with opportunities to begin making their network of connections for a success journey at KU.

When I was a Freshman in College... 

I am a first-generation college student and it took me a semester to really learn how to navigate a college campus and course work.  My first few weeks I felt overwhelmed and kind of lost, but I had faculty who cared and helped me learn how to be a successful student.  

Best advice is to go to class and even if it feels uncomfortable, introduce yourself to your professor before/after class or in their office hours.  We are here to help you and we want to get to know you better! 

When you visit my office… 

I try to have some snacks in case you don’t have time to grab food before or after we meet.  I will welcome you with a sincere smile and a genuine interest in getting to know who you are person, while hopefully showing you that I am a human that you can talk to when you want.   

I have two boys (10 & 12) and we are very much excited to watch Myth Busters a few evenings each week to spend time as a family.  I am also a new junkie and listen to NPR and the BBC quite often.  And for fun…I love my Elton John and Jimmy Buffet Pandora channels.

As an undergraduate my least favorite class by far was a 5 credit plant biology course that i refused to take until my last semester.  however, i now have a ph.d. in botany and am a huge plant enthusiast.  .

COMS 176 - Sex, Fate, & Death

Humans are obsessed with depictions of sex and violence—not just in popular culture, but in literature, mythology, and world history. At the same time, stories about destiny—time travel stories that fix (or cause!) temporal paradoxes, prophecies about a “chosen one,” or a character living the same day lived over and over—are everywhere. This course argues that these are all linked together: We are drawn to narratives about destiny, of time travel, and prophecy to manage our anxieties around questions we have about sex and death. COMS 176: Sex, Fate & Death addresses the diversities of experiences in American life through these themes of desire, time, and mortality, points to why we repeat our obsessions, and whether it’s possible—or desirable—to find a way out. Students will study films, works of art, short fiction, and television shows to interpret these course themes, and produce original interpretations of their own chosen texts.

FREN 177 - Knights, Damsels, and Magical Lands

When you picture the Middle Ages what do you think of? Maybe the gruesome violence of Game of Thrones? The high fantasy of Lord of the Rings? The fairy tales you learned as a child? While, thanks to this kind of modern fantasy story, you may think you know all there is to know about knights in shining armor, the medieval narratives that inspired them have a lot more to say for themselves than you might think. In this course, we will explore the fascinating collisions between real and magical worlds in medieval narrative by studying authentic medieval stories and comparing them to more recent cultural products, including film, television, and art. In so doing, we will discover that medieval fantasy universes provide fascinating and often surprising perspectives on many of the same social issues we still grapple with today, including gender, sexuality, cultural difference, and political power.

FREN 177 - Subversive Science Fiction

We are all familiar with science fiction and, even if we are not huge fans, the chances are that there is something we like, be it Star Wars, Hunger Games, or Dune. While sci-fi is often categorized or even dismissed as mere entertainment, it has and continues to play a significant role in exploring who we are and what we do. In 2019, the French government revealed that it employs science-fiction writers and specialists to assist its military in identifying and predicting future threats. This class looks at a variety of science-fiction works (TV, movies, texts, graphic novels) and how they comment on issues affecting human society, from social media to AI. It will also explore ways in which sci-fi can challenge institutions and attitudes through the strategy of distance, in other words, presented a fictional, faraway world that really represents our own.

GERM 177 - Marx & Marxims German Culture & Beyond

Even been interested in radical politics and the intellectual roots of socialism? This seminar provides a timely introduction to the work of Karl Marx (1818-1883) and the writers, theorists, and filmmakers of the 20th- and 21st-century who were influenced by Marx’s critique of capitalism. We will learn about Marx’s central concepts and how they have been interpreted within different historical, political, and cultural contexts. We will discuss Marxism as a global phenomenon that has influenced social and political movements, art and culture. We will relate Marxism to pressing issues concerning racism, feminism, and the climate crisis. And we will continually ask ourselves about the ways in which Marxism provides a lens through which we can better understand the interrelated crises of our current moment.

HIST 176 - History of Gaming

Today, millions of Americans find joy and community by playing various board and video games, industries that have a combined value in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Perhaps you are one of them! In this seminar, you will learn about the historical development of games and gaming and how they became an important vehicle to both promote and challenge particular conceptions and assumptions within American culture. Through various readings, assignments, and game labs, you will learn about the historical development of gaming and the creation of gamer culture, while a semester project will teach you how to produce an academic research project on a fun and engaging topic

JWSH 176 - The Jewish American Story through Literature, Letters, and Latkes 

Jewish Americans arrived to the US in three waves between the 18th century and the early 20th century, coming from different parts of the world. We will focus on the largest wave of immigration which occurred between 1881-1925, bringing about 2.8 million primarily Eastern European Jews to the United States. Many of these immigrants settled in New York City, creating rich immigrant literature and culture such as the musical theater, and now familiar Jewish American institutions such as the Jewish deli. We will read immigrant stories from the period, read the fascinating letters that Jewish people sent to advice columns, and watch early movies about Jewish American life. We will learn about theatre and musical culture, the changes in language, and the emergence of a distinctive Jewish American food culture. Our class activities will include reading and watching primary sources, engaging in group discussions in person and via online discussion groups, and enjoying guest lectures from other KU professors. We will have short oral and written assignments throughout the semester to develop your competence and confidence leading to the final assignment.

When I was a Freshman… 

I started my Freshman year feeling lonely, but I soon found a group of other linguistics majors who became my friends – we all loved dead languages, science fiction, and coffee! I am so happy to be a nerd.

I’m an author of a bunch of fantasy books under the name R.B. Lemberg - you can find many of my books at the Raven bookstore in downtown Lawrence.

I also want to mention that I’m a language consultant for Indecent , a queer Jewish play about a historical queer Jewish play. We are staging Indecent at the KU Theatre! I love it so much. 

I don’t have any pets, but I love birds. My backyard has been adopted by a crow who comes to visit almost every day, and often brings friends.

JWSH 177 - Life, Death, and Afterlife in Modern Israel's Society

This course concerns beliefs and practices about life, death, and the afterlife in Israel's diverse religious and ethnic communities. Our larger question for this seminar is: How do religious beliefs and practices shape social identity in modern Israeli society? We will discuss loss, funeral practices, grief, remembrance, and bereavement while exploring differences between genders, between civilians and military personnel, and levels of religiosity. We will explore various religious views of the sanctity of life and the importance of burial. The most exciting item for students will be learning about the various beliefs and practices regarding the afterlife, such as reincarnation in the Jewish Kabala (Gilgul) and among the Druze (Taqamus). The goal is for each student to speak intelligently about these religious beliefs and practices and their connection to social identity in modern society while using the case of communities in Israel. These communities include, for example, Ultra-Orthodox Jews, Mizrahi or Ashkenazi Jews, Russian Jews, Ethiopian Jews (Beta Israel), Sunni-Muslims, Bedouins, Roman Catholics, Greek Orthodox, Druze, and Baha'i.

LING 176 - Language, Thought, and Culture

In this seminar, we will ask whether language influences the way we think, and how language and culture are related. You will explore questions such as whether knowing different languages makes people see the world in different ways, whether different genders use language in different ways, and what "language" even is.     During the semester you will discuss your own experiences and ideas with language, and read about theories and experiments examining language to see what the evidence says about our ideas. Our exploration of language, culture and thought will draw on ideas from fields including linguistics, psychology, sociology, anthropology, and neuroscience. You will visit labs at KU that are conducting research about language and thought, and will visit a showcase of seniors' research posters to get a taste of the work that KU students can do in this area.    Once you've gotten familiar with the ideas and research surrounding this topic, you will work on developing your own creative project that uses those tools to explore something about language and us. Your project will not just be a paper or presentation that only the professor will read, but will be something to be shared outside of class, something that will be useful to the world. In addition to all that, you will do activities throughout the semester that introduce you to different parts of KU and different resources KU has to offer, to prepare you for further university-level study.

Intro linguistics, psycholinguistics, statistics & research methods for linguistics 

I was on the cross-country team, and took a mix of classes including intro and upper-level. The ones I particularly remember were intro sociology, abnormal psychology, upper-level French, an English class on the Canterbury Tales, and a two-semester intro poli sci class called “The Quest for Justice”. Few of these were very relevant to what I ended up doing with my major or my life, but I learned a lot from just the experience of talking about those topics with lots of smart people from different backgrounds. I also made friends with a lot of upperclassmen through being on cross-country and taking some upper-level classes, so I thought I was cooler than everyone else. (Spoiler alert: I was not.) 

Care about what you’re learning about and what you’re doing – not just your grade! If you care about something and are interested in it, you’re going to do a good job and enjoy it no matter how hard it is. 

You’ll be able to talk with me about your class or whatever else you’re going through. Or play board games.

This seminar invites students to explore three interrelated questions: 1) How do we use language to create our identities? 2) How can sociolinguistic tools help us to appreciate and value diversity?, and 3) How can linguistic research work toward justice? Students are introduced to contemporary issues in the study of language, gender, & sexuality, specifically orienting to a newly emergent framework known as "trans linguistics." Students will work together to do novel research that addresses real-world problems from the perspective of trans linguistics, learning how linguistics can be a tool for "the empowerment of trans people and others at the margins"(Zimman 2020: 15).  

Using TikTok as a data source, this class invites students to understand the "transformation, fluidity, and movement"in language and identity, showcasing trans agency and highlighting "ways in which trans [and gender-diverse] people to use language not only to survive, but thrive" (Konnelly 2021: 79). Students will learn the steps of collaborative research, including crafting their own research questions, identifying and reviewing relevant literature, collecting and analyzing data, and presenting their work.

I was born in Lubbock, Texas, and pretty much grew up in Kansas. So, you might could hear me say things like "might could" ;) or "I do that a lot anymore." I took my first class in linguistics having absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into, but I quickly fell in love with it. I'm currently an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Linguistics. My degrees are in Linguistics and Indigenous Studies, and I received my Ph.D. from none other than the good ol' University of Kansas! LFK forever I guess /hj

I like to nerd out on lots of language-y things, like word and sentence structure, their relationship to meaning,  and abstract modeling that accounts for how we build language units. I’ve had the privilege of working with Indigenous communities and languages in the U.S., Mexico, Guatemala, Nigeria, and Ghana, and am deeply invested in doing work that supports communities’ language reclamation and revitalization efforts. I also enjoy investigating things that pertain to social life of language, looking into how our beliefs, attitudes, knowledges, and identities shape and are shaped by language use. I tend to gravitate toward language work that is connected to and a manifestation of  justice.

When I'm not teaching and doing research, I'm usually having a good time with my fantastic partner and kids. Currently we’re all trying to beat Tears of the Kingdom.

ITAL 177-That's Amore: Fragments of a Discourse on Love

Perhaps Emily Dickinson was right when she wrote, “That Love is all there is, / Is all we know of Love”, for what do we know about it after all? The main goal of this course is to investigate love as a mysterious, most pleasant and most deceitful subject, while in the process becoming better readers, critical thinkers and writers. Through the analysis of novels, short stories, poetry, music and live theater, we will consider how humans relate to love relationships as a main bond among individuals and as a tool of self-discovery as well. Read about Dante’s lustful souls in the Inferno, debate Boccaccio bawdy tales from the Middle Ages, and listen to Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Verdi’s La Traviata. A comparative literature course with an Italian core and focus on close reading.

MUS 177 - Music Scenes and Culture  

This course has been specifically designed to offer students the opportunity to explore and analyze both mainstream and underground music trends, while also delving into key aspects of the music industry that have a significant impact on our lives. A particular focus of the course will be examining how different locations influence the music industry. It is important to note that this course is heavily discussion-based. Throughout the semester, there will be four main assignments: 1. Objective/Integrative Assignment: As part of this assignment, students will be tasked with creating three hypothetical concert plans targeted towards University of Kansas college students, in collaboration with the Lied Center. These plans will need to be justified using data and information gathered from various sources. Students will be provided with assigned readings, which will include a range of music articles, artist biographies, and excerpts for analysis. The final project for this course will serve as a culmination of the research and discussions conducted throughout the semester. Students will be grouped in teams of three and will prepare group presentations. These presentations will involve proposing three distinct concert experiences to Derek Kwan, the executive director of the Lied Center. This experiential proposal will take place at the Lied Center at the end of the semester. a. Event in the Lied Center Pavilion b. Event on Lied Center main stage c. PORT 177 - Amazon: Environmental Issues in Literature and Film

This seminar will explore environmental issues in the Amazon through the lens of literature and film.  How do narratives of place shape our understanding of our relationship to the natural world?  What role do novels and films play in bridging local realities to a broader global context?  Students will read news stories and journal articles to establish a framework for present-day environmental challenges in the Amazon.  Through course activities, students will critically examine how different sources build understanding and serve as catalysts for change.  Additionally, students will consider how the lessons of the Amazon apply to local and national debates about preservation issues, for example, through investigations of the Baker Wetlands and the Badlands of South Dakota.

Meet the Instructor... Luciano Tosta

Luciano Tosta is Associate Professor of Brazilian Literature and Culture. Born in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, and the grandchild of a Tupinambá woman, the Amazon Rainforest has been dear to him his whole life. As a professor, he continues to be fascinated by the region, which contains the second largest river in the world, produces 20% of the Earth’s oxygen, and is home to countless animals and plants. The region is also under constant threat by mining, bio-piracy, poaching and deforestation. His research focuses on hemispheric American studies, with the goal of discussing Brazilian cultural production from a comparative perspective.  In his spare time he plays capoeira and the mandolin. 

REL 177 - Learning Across Cultures: Muslims from stereotype to personhood

How can studying religion help us develop empathy towards ourselves and others? Where do negative stereotypes of Muslims come from and what can they teach us about ourselves? In this course students will examine the beliefs, practices, and rituals of Muslims around the world, with a focus on contemporary manifestations. They will then use this knowledge to critically evaluate representations of Muslims and Islamic culture in media, literature, and popular culture. Special emphasis will be placed on fostering cultural competence, empathy, and dialogue across religious and cultural differences, with the goal of promoting mutual understanding and respect in a diverse world.

This semester, I’m teaching UNIV 176: Voices of Change. I’ve also taught UNIV 101: Orientation Seminar, LA&S 372: Preparing for Programs in the Health Professions, and LA&S 470: Job Search Skills for Liberal Arts Majors

I was excited and terrified. I was a good student and was really looking forward to learning more about the things that interested me most (for me, that was literature and the social sciences), but making new friends and juggling work and family obligations was daunting. Eventually, I found my routine and made friends, but it took some time to settle into.

Be brave. As a certified scaredy-cat, I know it’s not easy to go outside of your comfort zone. But whether it’s trying something new or asking for help, a little bravery can go a long way.

I’ll be ready to talk about class, answer a question you might have, or just chat about how things are going for you. You can also try to figure out what all of my pop culture knickknacks are in reference to, borrow a book, or grab a snack.

WGSS 176 - Pregnancy in Modern Literature

What did people write about pregnancy in the twentieth century? How did political and social debates - over birth control, abortion, or eugenics, to name just a few - change these depictions? Did writers have an impact on history? And what do writers from the last hundred years have to teach us about today's debates surrounding reproductive justice for queer, trans, and non-binary people? This course draws together voices from literature, history, and feminist theory to consider questions like these, deepening your understanding of the ways nationality, class, race, ability, and gender affect what we think about when we think about pregnancy.

I’ve taught Introduction to Feminist Theory, Feminist Methods, and World Literature, as well as several graduate-level classes.  

I attended the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. I was a Journalism and Mass Communication major, with a Spanish minor.

Gen Z have taken the internet by storm with their hilarious memes in response to Rishi Sunak's national service announcement, as MailOnline can reveal 66 percent of our readers are in favour of the policy.

Writing in The Mail On Sunday, Mr Sunak unveiled plans which would see all school-leavers either serve in the Armed Forces for one year or spend 12 weekends a year volunteering with organisations such as the NHS or police.

The shock announcement has sparked a fierce debate across the political spectrum, but the Prime Minister said he believes it will help unite the country.

But Labour has called the plan 'desperate' and blasted the £2.5 billion expected cost of the project.

Today it can be revealed that in a poll of our readers, two thirds said they are in favour of the return of some form of national service.

Online Gen Z seem far from convinced, with many pointing out the significant sacrifices made to their education and university experiences during the pandemic.

Taking to TikTok and X, formally Twitter, they shared hilarious memes mocking the plans.

One user posted a short clip of Jack Grealish appearing confused as to how to make a confetti cannon go off.

Pointing it towards his body, he eventually does get the confetti out, but in the wrong direction. The poster wrote: 'Me when they give me my gun at national service.'

The Prime Minister today claimed 'people are really excited' about his plan to bring in national service for all 18-year-olds.

Speaking from Churchill China , a ceramics company in Stoke-on-Trent, Mr Sunak told reporters: 'People are really excited about national service, because that is an example of the bold action that we're prepared to take and people can see that that's going to be transformational for our country.

'And as I've said all the MPs that I've been spending time with over the last four days are working their socks off for their communities.'

Rishi Sunak insisted he has not given up on young people as he described his national service plan as 'transformational' and 'incredibly positive for young people'.

He told reporters: 'I think providing young people, regardless of their background, where they're from, where they live, with the opportunities that national service will provide, the skills that it will give them later in life, will be hugely positive for them.

'And at the same time, foster a culture of service in our country that will make our societies more cohesive, and strengthen our security and resilience as a country.'

He added: 'I think service is a really wonderful thing and it gives people purpose. So I view national service as something that's really positive and beneficial for people.

'Giving them the opportunity to do that and contribute to their communities in this way, be part of something that's bigger than any individual, that I think will become a rite of passage and something very meaningful for our entire country will be over time, people will look back on it and look back on their time doing it with enormous fondness and pride.'

But his political opponents have branded the plan a sign of his 'desperation'.

The Prime Minister was welcomed to Staffordshire by MP Jonathan Gullis, who represents Stoke-on-Trent

Liberal Democrat MP Helen Morgan said the plan, which is expected to cost £2.5 billion if ever implemented, is 'desperate'.

Ms Morgan said: 'What's wrong in places like North Shropshire, is that we don't have enough young people to work in those skilled jobs that we already have, and dragging them away to do national service will make the economy much worse.

'We want to see people trained in apprenticeships to do the jobs that we need filling.'

A spokesperson for Labour responded to the announcement, made over the weekend, and said: 'This is another desperate, £2.5bn unfunded commitment from a Tory party which already crashed the economy, sending mortgages rocketing, and now they're spoiling for more.

'This is not a plan – it's a review which could cost billions and is only needed because the Tories hollowed out the armed forces to their smallest size since Napoleon. Britain has had enough of the Conservatives, who are bankrupt of ideas, and have no plans to end 14 years of chaos.'
