Her: Chapter 1 Movie Review:

Later, films like Hit: The First Case (2020) and Dirty Hari (2020) won her good applause.

Now, the latest outing — HER: Chapter 1 — is something which made her break the monotony of girl-next-door characters.

IPS officer Archana Prasad is bruised with her personal loss after Taskforce officer Seshadri Prasanna (Vikas Vashisht) is killed by notorious gangster Keshav (Chanakya Tejas) during a raid at a defunct railway workshop in the city.

She dives into action after six months into suspension with mysterious twin murders — Swathi and her friend Vishal Pasupuleti are brutally murdered by unidentified men at Narsingi in Gandipet mandal.

What’s the motive of the killers behind these murders? How crucial it is for Archana to crack the case at the same time fighting with her vulnerabilities is what HER: Chapter 1 is all about.

Pacy first half.

Director Sreedhar Swaraghav manages to keep the first half pacy.

The process of the investigation into the twin murders as Archana undergoes the pain of losing her fiance, the images of tragic gunfire, and the happy moments spent with Sesh — keep recurring in Archana’s mind.

At the same time, the ACP is resolved to catch the culprits at any cost.

Jeevan Kumar’s comedy as sub-inspector Nataraj keeps the audience engaged.

Giving an initial impression of a serious-looking, no-nonsense cop, Nataraj makes himself a laughing stock with the way he deals with things.

Like the scene where he and a few policemen squeeze through the busy lane of Hafeezpet to catch hold of a suspect named Santosh. Poor Nataraj ends up suffering a blow after the suspect flings a spanner.

Faltered in few scenes.

The love track between Ruhani Sharma and Vikas Vashisht and the subsequent song didn’t really break the routine mould.

HER Chapter 1 is an action thriller

‘HER Chapter 1’ is an action thriller. (iRuhaniSharma/ Twitter)

Director Sreedhar Swaraghav’s innate ability is in writing scenes that have limited dialogues. He has good flair and flow in storytelling.

But it looks as though he faltered when it comes to handling sequences with dialogues.

There is a sequence where two NIA (National Investigation Agency) officers arrive at the DCP office to enquire about the case with Ruhani in the presence of her higher-up Banerjee.

NIA officer Ravi Prakash urges Banerjee to transfer the case to the NIA since there is a national threat involved.

The scene is so poorly conceived that the DCP takes the instant decision to hand over the case to the NIA.

And these “unprofessional” NIA sleuths not only belittle ACP Archana but also stare at her in grouse while leaving the office.

Poorly shot and edited.

Even in the first half, the director doesn’t try to show how task force officer Seshadri gets killed in the exchange of gunfire.

It was so abruptly cut that you can’t really comprehend how it started and why it ended that way — Sesh steps on broken glass pieces.

Ruhani Sharma in HER Chapter 1

Keshav, who is waiting for the chance behind, presses the trigger. The gunshots leave no chance for Sesh to dodge, resulting in his death.

The scene of the Telangana police landing in Raichur to catch Lohiya is poorly shot.

Nevertheless, the interval sequence of Archana questioning her deputy Deepak in the case has been shot superbly.

In fact, the music scored by Pavan for the scene raised curiosity as to how the story takes a turn.

However, the second half has too many characters squeezing space so randomly into the story.

The climax should have ended by giving a proper premise of gangster Keshav (Chanakya Tejas)’s profile. How he established a kingdom of arms trade would have raised some seriousness in audiences to invest their time in the second franchise.

Doubts of over-editing keep hovering in mind. This possibly could have affected the story.

Nevertheless, the director makes a good attempt at trying to give a realistic picture of police procedure in a crime story.

Performances.

HER: Chapter 1 is solely hauled forward by Ruhani Sharma. Her performance as a woman IPS with a strong resolve to book the culprits is well showcased.

Chanakya Tejas makes a mere cameo.

Banerjee and Ravi Varma have little to do with the small space.

Sanjay Swaroop has done a good job.

Jeevan Kumar does a good bite. He chips in well with his humour and entertains viewers with his satires.

A question may arise in your mind whether HER: Chapter 1 is attempting to mimic some of Adivi Sesh’s suspense thrillers. The film falls flat in terms of execution in the second half.

HER-Chapter 1 Review

HER - Chapter 1: What's Behind

Ruhani Sharma's HER-Chapter 1 directed by Sreedhar Swaraghav generated interest with a good teaser and trailer. The film is releasing on 21 July 2023. The film's OTT rights are yet to be finalized and streaming will be after the completion of its theatrical run.

HER Chapter 1: Story Review

HER-Chapter 1 story is all about a female police officer who uses her grit, tenacity, and intelligence while trying to solve a double murder case against all odds. ACP Archana Prasad (Ruhani Sharma) along with her team comprising of Nataraj (Jeevan Kumar),  is out to investigate the double murder case. What obstacles she faces, how the developments connected to her fiancee Sehadri Prasanna (Vishal Vasishta), colleague Kapil (Pradeep Rudra), Commissioner Shiva Kumar (Bannerjee), DGP Raghunandan (Sanjay Swarup), NIA officer Vikrant (Ravi Prakash) form the rest of the proceedings.

HER: Chapter 1 - Artists Review

Ruhani Sharma performed her role well. She showed good expressions and emotions and made an impression on the screen in various situations. She showed the trauma and also the feelings when she had to deal with the suspension and also the expression in her zeal to realize her dream of joining NIA. She also showed good body language while addressing her superiors and cajoling her colleagues and subordinates and at the same time, directing them during the investigation. She in fact carried the film on her shoulders.

Jeevan Kumar as her subordinate evoked a few laughs and also showed the serious side of him to make viewers glued to him. Others got less screen presence and Vishal Vasishta appeared for a few minutes Pradeep Rudra is good while Bannerjee, Sanjay Swarup, and Ravi Prakash made their presence felt. Others performed according to their roles.

HER-Chapter 1: Technicians Review

HER-Chapter 1 story penned by Sreedhar Swaraghav is about the female officer and how she goes along solving the cases. He highlighted the pain and trauma of a female police officer when she loses her dear one and faces suspension. Many such films came earlier but all those featured male police officers and Sreedhar used his creativity to show the feelings of a female police officer.

He starts the narration in an interesting manner and sticks to the point without deviating from the main point. He stayed away from including commercial elements and forced comedy. He showed all the characters in a natural and realistic manner. He continued in the same vein in the second half after the interesting interval twist. The twists and turns are unraveled in a neat manner and the film ends with the lead to the second part.

But it seems that the director Sreedhar Swaragav dragged the screenplay with unnecessary and repetitive scenes only to give the lead to the second part. One gets the impression that Sreedhar Swaraghav got inspired by Vishwak Sen-Sailesh Kolanu's HIT-The First Case. Had he included similar kind of intense elements, he could have created a sensation.

The film has only one song. Pawan came up with a romantic melody and it is neatly shot. He elevated the scenes with his background music, especially in the later half. Vishnu Besi's cinematography is good. He showed the investigation and interrogation scenes in a realistic and natural manner shooting on live locations. Chanakya Toorupu should have used his editing scissors to turn the film sleek. The slow pace ended up testing the patience of the viewers. Production values of  Double Up Media are decent.

HER-Chapter 1 (2023) Movie: Rating Analysis

Altogether HER-Chapter 1 is an interesting investigative thriller. Sreedhar Swaraghav came up with a neat story and got the optimum performance from all the actors. Especially Ruhani Sharma performed her role exceedingly well. Sreedhar Swaraghava came up with a good screenplay and direction and kept the interest of the viewers intact till the climax. Had he done away with the lags and turned the screenplay racy, the result would have been even better. Considering all these points, Cinejosh goes with a 2.5 Rating for HER Chapter 1 .

Music - Pavan

Ruhani Sharma donned the role of a police officer. The investigative crime thriller Her: Chapter 1 is helmed by Sreedhar Swaraghav. The film’s trailer raises interest. Will the movie live up to the expectations?

After a 6 months suspension, ACP Archana Prasad (Ruhani Sharma) returns to work. She takes charge of the case of a twin murder – Swathi, Vishal. As the case is investigated, links to Keshav (a terrorist who supplies weapons) emerge. Archana also has a personal loss as she loses her boyfriend Sesh in a shootout in the past. This has a connection to a weapon used in double murder. Archana is chasing the mastermind behind the double murders and NIA is also chasing it for the other reason. Will Archana crack the case? Will she nab Keshav? Will Archana fulfill her dream to join the NIA? The Her: Chapter 1 attempts to answer these questions.

Investigation Portions Mild Humour

Unwanted Drama Repetitive & Dragged Scenes Antagonist

Investigative crime thrillers need to be gripping and intriguing to hold the curiosity till the end. Otherwise, they end up boring owing to predictability. Her: Chapter 1 takes off on a decent note. It starts with the twin murders. The motive behind the murders of Swathi and Vishal raise curiosity and the mastermind behind them is suspense. As the investigation goes on, it unearths some unexpected facts and brings in new suspects. Chapter 1 deals with suspects, their motives, evidence (footage) and clues to nab the culprits.

It has some moments that work here and there. But it couldn’t hold one’s interest thoroughly. Post-interval, the film’s narration gets slow and scenes get repetitive as the protagonist recollects the order of investigation. There is unwanted drama that puts one off. The scenes are stretched out. Director Sreedhar elaborates much even when it is not required. Attention to detailing is good. But over-detailing and attention to unwanted details just tests the patience of viewers.

The good part of the film is that the story takes the center stage and all the characters are driven accordingly. Performances-wise, Ruhani does a decent job. Vikas Vashista doesn’t get a notable role. His character is restricted for the past mission. Inspector Kapil evokes a few laughs. He brings cheers even in serious portions and this is fun-banter worked. The film needs better writing in taking forward the story. The scenes lack depth.

The major problem is no establishment about villain Keshav. Also, the characters of Swati and Vishal lack enough gravity. This may disconnect the audience from the proceedings as one won’t take their murders seriously. So it is about Keshav and why he should be arrested. The NIA angle is just a filler and it has nothing much to offer. On the whole, Her: Chapter 1 isn’t a gripping crime saga. It leaves us asking for more thrills. Chapter 1 is dull and draggy.

Verdict: Boring Chapter

The Strangers: Chapter 1 Review: An Uninspired Retread

J ust once, I would love it if Tamara was actually home. Her friends clearly miss her and are so concerned for her that they’ll kill anyone who stops them from finding her.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 is a new horror movie set to kick off a reboot trilogy for this horror franchise. It kicked off in 2008 with Bryan Bertino’s original The Strangers movie starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, which has become a bit of a cult film. 10 years after, the sequel The Strangers: Prey at Night came out, and that movie was better than many expected. And now, we have a new trilogy, with Chapters 2 and 3 set to be released over the next year. And truth be told, I could not be less excited to see what happens next.

This movie adds so little to the franchise that it might as well be considered a remake of the 2008 film. It’s not a continuation of The Strangers: Prey at Night, nor does it acknowledge the events of either of its two predecessors. It seems as if Lionsgate simply wants to make more The Strangers movies, so they’re telling Bertino’s original movie again but expanding the story into a trilogy. But when you have a movie reboot so absurdly similar to the original, you’re going to invite comparisons to be drawn. And The Strangers: Chapter 1 is just an inferior version of that 2008 movie.

Like the first movie, it advertises how this is based on a true story and shares statistics about the amount of violent crimes that happen in the U.S. every year. It’s meant to be harrowing, and it is to an extent. Afterward, we have an opening scene where people are hunted down and killed by three masked strangers. Unless this scene comes back in Chapter 2 or 3, I do not understand the function of this scene besides the possibility that a test screening reaction wanted a kill earlier in the movie. A lot of horror movies have an opening kill, but this one does not add anything to the plot. It’s completely unnecessary and feels like a reshoot.

We are then introduced to our new characters, Maya (Madelaine Petsch) and Ryan (Froy Gutierrez). These two are a couple celebrating their five-year anniversary with a road trip. We instantly get a sense of their lack of common sense when she kisses him as he drives, which (expectedly) nearly gets them into a head-on collision with a truck. We then see that Ryan is asthmatic and requires an inhaler. Can you imagine if that inhaler comes back later and becomes crucial to the plot? I sure can because it’s an obvious cliché and we just saw this trope in the 2022 Scream movie.

Horror movies like The Strangers: Chapter 1 work well because the characters are isolated. It needs to be established early on that the characters are miles away from civilization and any hope for help is far away. This movie does that and has the sense to make Ryan suspicious and skeptical of the inciting event that causes them to hole up in this AirBnB. There are hints throughout this movie that the masked killers will get a bit more of a backstory in the trilogy and that some townsfolk may be involved in their actions. I don’t think the killers in The Strangers need that because the fear comes from how purely random the violence is.

What does this movie do differently from the original? It’s a bit more deliberate in that choice to put the characters far away from everyone else. They’re in a cabin in the woods, which is a classic horror setup. The big difference is the relationship between the characters. The first movie had a couple filled with sadness and tension because she had just turned down her boyfriend’s marriage proposal. It’s filled with sadness and emotional weight. But The Strangers: Chapter 1 features a very happy couple. They try to bring in a plot where it’s been five years and he hasn’t proposed yet, and they’re moving for work, but it’s very dull compared to the first movie.

As the film progresses, you realize that this movie is just recycling what we saw in the first Strangers movie beat for beat. The knock on the door, asking if Tamara is home, the killers entering the house unbeknownst to the woman, silent staring, the man not believing the woman when she says she saw someone in the house, “hello” gets written all over the door, and on and on and on. The reason why The Strangers: Prey at Night is my favorite movie in the series is because director Johannes Roberts injected life and personality into that film with neon lighting, a synth soundtrack, far more kills, and a new story. The Strangers: Chapter 1 is simply rehashing what we’ve already seen before.

It’s directed by Renny Harlin, a director who had high-profile work in the ’80s and ’90s with A Nightmare on Elm Street 4, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Deep Blue Sea, and a personal favorite of mine: Die Hard 2. His wide-released Hollywood work has slowed down in recent years, and this movie was gift-wrapped to be a return to form for him. But he doesn’t bring any particular style to the series. He definitely puts thought and intention into his shots, but he doesn’t bring much new to the table. It’s not a poorly directed film. There are a few annoying jump scares, but it’s far from horrendous. There just isn’t much that’s unpredictable in this movie, especially if you’ve seen the first film.

The sole sequence that feels a bit original is one where Maya and Ryan need to crawl under the house and be as quiet as possible. But even this sequence feels reminiscent of a scene from A Quiet Place. This movie is derivative, but I think the biggest turn-off is how stupid the characters can be. During one key moment towards the end, Ryan is holding a gun, and he does something so stupid that everyone in my theater began to scream at the screen. When your main characters are so dumb that the audience starts rooting for the killers, that’s not a good sign. All I can hope for is that there’s a more original story to tell in The Strangers: Chapter 2 because there’s currently no reason to watch this movie over Bertino’s 2008 original or the criminally underrated The Strangers: Prey at Night.

SCORE: 5/10

As ComingSoon's  review policy  explains, a score of 5 equates to "Mediocre." The positives and negatives wind up negating each other, making it a wash.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 Review: An Uninspired Retread

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Just once, I would love it if Tamara was actually home.

‘Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1’ Review: Sprawling Yet Thinly Spread, the First Part of Kevin Costner’s Western Epic Feels Like the Set-Up for a TV Miniseries

It's set in 1859 and has a few vivid characters, from settlers to Native Americans, but the films jumps around too much and explains too little.

Kevin Costner - Horizon

Arriving in the middle of the art smorgasbord that’s the Cannes Film Festival , a three-hour Western directed by Kevin Costner sounded like it might be just the ticket for a perfect night of counterprogramming: a grandly scaled slice of neo-classical Hollywood. That, after all, describes the other two Westerns Costner has directed (“Dances with Wolves” and “Open Range”), as well as his quirky sci-fi pseudo-Western “The Postman.” There’s no question that “ Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 ,” Costner’s fourth outing as a director, gives off some of that traditional flavor.

Popular on Variety

And that feels like a major disappointment. As a stand-alone film (which it isn’t, but let’s pretend for a moment), “Horizon” is by turns convoluted, ambitious, intriguing, and meandering. But it’s never quite moving. It’s too busy laying down narrative tracks and hammering out the minutiae of situations that don’t feel like they’re leading anywhere special.

Costner, to his credit, wants to nudge the Western away from a white hat/black hat mythology that’s now outdated. He wants shades of gray, and characters we can’t pigeonhole as heroes or villains (though there are a few of those). But too often the action feels hurried, both overstaged and underscripted. One of the key locales is the settlement of Horizon, advertised on handbills — a place that’s not quite a place yet, because when people show up to settle there they tend to get killed by the local Apache. We see an Apache raid that ends up in apocalyptic fire, and experience it from inside the home of Frances Kittredge ( Sienna Miller ) and her daughter, Elizabeth (Georgia MacPhail), the two of whom hide in a hole under the living room, which is so airtight that they have to poke a rifle out of the ground and use the gun barrel as a breathing tube. That’s a vivid detail, and then Frances loses her husband and son. But it’s jarring to take this all in before we’ve even had a sense of who this family is.

The Native characters are the attackers, but we see several extended scenes from their point-of-view. They are never “the other,” the simple enemy. That said, there are two speeches in the movie, one by an Apache war chief (Gregory Cruz) and one by a U.S. cavalry officer (Danny Huston), that address the fundamental issue of the Indigenous tribes trying to stop what they call the “white-eye” settlers who’ve invaded their land. And both speeches, weirdly, make the same point: that even if the Native people are justified, and even if they keep trying to fight the settlers, they’re doomed to lose. The settlers will keep coming. History is not on the Natives’ side. This seems an awfully definitive vision to hold in 1859. And while Costner doesn’t seem unsympathetic to his Native characters, it’s not clear, as of now, how much they’ll take on a life of their own.

There are also scenes set on a covered-wagon trail that center on the Proctors, an effete English couple who’ve joined the Westward movement. They have a very naïve and almost charmingly entitled attitude (they don’t realize that they have to work, too — that the other settlers are not their servants), but Matthew Van Weyden, the leader of the wagon train, sets them straight. He’s played by Luke Wilson, who is very good, shaking off any semblance of his usual irony. Meanwhile, Frances and her daughter wind up being taken care of at a U.S. Army encampment, where First Lieutenant Trent Gephart (Sam Worthington) attracts Frances’ attention by being both handsome and too gentlemanly for his own good.

A few of these characters are interesting; none of them are memorable. “Horizon” is no “Lonesome Dove,” though Costner tries, and mostly succeeds, at setting aside Western clichés about what towns really looked like, and how frontier life worked. The real problem is the script (by Costner and Jon Baird), which is shapeless. It doesn’t weave these stories together; it stacks them next to each other like a series of cabooses. Yet I think the idea is that the design of it all will come into focus as we see “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2” (later this year), and then, at some point, “Chapter 3” (which is now scheduled) and maybe, if all goes according to plan, more chapters. I seriously hope not. I’m not sure how much juice there is to squeeze out of these characters, but even if there is some I don’t want to see movies turn into television. Just about every Western of the studio era came in at two hours or less, and so did most of the revisionist Westerns (and some of those were complicated ). There’s a reason for that. It’s all the time they needed.

'The Strangers: Chapter 1' Scares Up 2024's Highest Horror Box Office Opening

The film earned over $10 million in its first weekend in theaters.

The Big Picture

  • The Strangers: Chapter 1 has the highest-grossing opening weekend for a horror film in 2024, beating out Night Swim.
  • Despite negative reviews, the film has grossed over $11 million at the domestic box office, surpassing other horror films this year.
  • The movie reboots the popular franchise, following a couple who are terrorized by ax-wielding strangers in a remote cabin.

While 2024 hasn't been a phenomenal year for horror films, Lionsgate's The Strangers: Chapter 1 has earned an accolade that will surely make the studio happy. The Madelaine Petsch -led horror film had the highest-grossing opening weekend at the domestic box office for a horror film this year, according to The Numbers , earning $11.8 million during its first three-day stint in theaters. This means that it just edges out Blumhouse and Universal's horror film Night Swim , which brought in $11.7 million during its opening weekend in January.

Through the three-day weekend beginning on May 17, The Strangers: Chapter 1 grossed $11,825,058 playing on 2,856 screens in the United States. While this isn't a record-breaking figure by any means, it is significantly higher than most other horror films this year, the majority of which grossed less than $10 million in their opening weekends. The Strangers: Chapter 1 has now become just the third horror film of the year to gross more than this in its opening, following the aforementioned Night Swim and Universal's Abigail , which brought in $10.2 million during its domestic opening. The rest of the horror list this year is filled out by films such as Imaginary, The First Omen, and Tarot, which saw weekend openings of $9.9 million, $8.3 million, and $6.5 million, respectively.

This has allowed The Strangers: Chapter 1 to sit at the top of the standings despite receiving mostly negative reviews. The film has a critic's score of 15% and an audience score of 43% on Rotten Tomatoes, with Collider's Emma Kiely saying in her review that the film "doesn’t have anything new to add to the series" and "rehashes all the familiar touchstones of the 2008 movie." The film's 4K steelbook was even made available for pre-orders a single day after it was released in theaters.

'The Strangers: Chapter 1' Reboots the 2008 Franchise

The film serves to reboot the popular The Strangers franchise following the original 2008 film and its sequel, 2018's The Strangers: Prey at Night. The film, the first in a planned trilogy , follows a similar premise to the original: a couple, Maya (Petsch) and Ryan ( Froy Gutierrez ) end up staying in a remote cabin in the woods after experiencing car trouble, only to have the home broken into by a series of ax-wielding strangers. As the film goes on, the couple attempt to escape the mysterious intruders trying to kill them.

Beyond Petsch and Gutierrez, The Strangers: Chapter 1 also stars Rachel Shenton, Gabriel Basso, and Ema Horvath. It was directed by Renny Harlin from a screenplay by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland. It was produced by Courtney Solomon, Mark Canton, Christopher Milburn, Gary Raskin, Charlie Dombeck, and Alastair Birlingham. Executive producers include Petsch, Andrei Boncea, Dorothy Canton, Roy Lee, and Rafaella Biscayn.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 is in theaters now. Both prior films in the franchise are now streaming on Max.

The Strangers: Chapter 1

A young couple drive cross-country toward a new beginning; unfortunately they have no choice but to stop in a secluded Airbnb in Oregon--and endure a night of terror against three masked strangers.

her chapter 1 movie review telugu

Now streaming on:

J.K. Simmons knows how to do sociopath. There’s something so fascinating about a performer like Simmons who can pivot from a guy who looks like your average suburban neighbor to a total lunatic with a perfectly timed malevolent smile. He’s having a blast in most of “You Can’t Run Forever,” and the fact that it was co-written and directed by his wife of almost thirty years probably made this an even more memorable shoot. Sadly, he’s the only one having fun. You certainly won’t.

To be fair, “You Can’t Run Forever” does open with a memorable blast, but it’s a scene that’s indicative of the tonal problems that will follow. Simmons’ Wade pulls up to a gas station in the middle of nowhere just in time to see a fight between a couple sitting in chairs outside the convenience store and a dude yelling at his yappy dog. He marches up to the dog owner, solving the dilemma by shooting him and the couple before driving off over the horizon. He’s deranged. And not just your typical Movie Villain deranged. In one scene, he pleasures himself to a photo of the wife of the guy he’s just killed. There’s a version of “You Can’t Run Forever” that plays like “ High Tension ” or “ Martyrs ,” truly leaning into its ultra-violent view of the world.

The problem is that director Michelle Schumacher didn’t have the courage to make that movie. She’s constantly losing the tonal grip on this story, directing scenes with a flat lack of energy that leaves Simmons lost in a movie that has no idea what to do with him. The film really gets started when Wade encounters Eddie ( Allen Leech ) and his stepdaughter Miranda ( Isabelle Anaya ), killing the former and sending the young woman into the woods to survive. While Miranda’s very pregnant mother Jenny ( Fernanda Urrejola ) panics at home, and the inept local cops bumble their way through the investigation of what appear to be the first murders in their area—the best bit in the film involves an incompetent deputy reading a manual about how to handle a crime scene—Wade hunts Miranda through the woods. It’s another variation on “The Most Dangerous Game.”

And yet it’s not really. Schumacher and co-writer Carolyn Carpenter don’t really even trust their “predator vs. prey” concept, constantly bursting any rising tension by cutting back to a worried Jenny or the officers trying to figure out who is terrorizing their small town. And when flashbacks vaguely try to give Wade a loose motive for what he’s doing, the whole thing falls apart even further. This kind of movie only works with a ruthless, motiveless killer who pushes a victim into discovering their inner strength. But that kind of direct ‘one on one’ thriller requires trust in both performers and collaborators like editors and cinematographers who can make the setting into a threatening backdrop. There is absolutely zero tension in “You Can’t Run Forever.” It all feels like a lark, a project that would completely dissolve if not for the Oscar winner at its center.

About that Oscar winner—there is some perverted glee in watching a performer who is so far above everything else around him. The ruthlessness in his eyes, a twisted smile when he knows he’s in charge, a true sense of danger—that’s all there in Simmons’ choices. And yet none of his scene partners rise to meet what he’s trying to do, creating a weird professional/amateur dynamic that’s like watching mediocre athletes try to keep up with an all-star. Schumacher turns to cheap emotional tricks to try to amp up everything around her star, including using exploitative plot devices like suicide and the dangers of imminent childbirth, but none of it rises to Simmons’ level. He’s just running so fast that the film can’t keep up with him.
