Gladstone Memorial Essay Prize

Posted by Mrs Howard on 12th November 2019 | Categories: Sixth Form | Comments: 0 comments

We are delighted to announce that CRGS student Declan Boyd has just won a nationwide Sixth Form essay prize.

Published twice a year, ‘Omnibus’ is the official magazine of the Joint Association of Classical Teachers (JACT), which offers fresh insights into the greatest classical texts and provides news and views from the world of classical archaeology and art. Every year the magazine invites contributions from students and this year Declan’s essay answered the question ‘The world of historians is a man’s world’. To what extent do you agree? with reference to Tacitus’ Annals.

As well as winning the publication’s Gladstone Memorial Essay Prize, worth £250, Declan’s essay has already received a number of favourable reviews from prominent classical scholars following its online publication, and it will appear in the next magazine.

This is a fantastic achievement – well done, Declan.

Gladstone and Homer

  • Published: March 2000
  • Cite Icon Cite

This chapter examines the reasons why Gladstone took up Homeric studies and attempts to bring out the significance of the substantial shift in his views. One reason for Gladstone's study of Homer is that the task provided a diversion from politics, a way of spending spare time profitably. A second explanation of his dedication to Homer is that he was eager to attack the opinions of George Grote, the leading authority of the day on ancient Greece. A third reason for the Homeric enterprise was distinctly religious. During the 1850s Gladstone became troubled by the growth of the assumption that little or nothing about religion was supernatural. He mounted an assault on the notion that religion is merely an expression of human instincts, using Homer's depiction of the pagan gods and goddesses.

Our Professional Writers Are Our Pride

EssayService boasts its wide writer catalog. Our writers have various fields of study, starting with physics and ending with history. Therefore we are able to tackle a wide range of assignments coming our way, starting with the short ones such as reviews and ending with challenging tasks such as thesis papers. If you want real professionals some of which are current university professors to write your essays at an adequate price, you've come to the right place! Hiring essay writers online as a newcomer might not be the easiest thing to do. Being cautious here is important, as you don't want to end up paying money to someone who is hiring people with poor knowledge from third-world countries. You get low-quality work, company owners become financial moguls, and those working for such an essay writing service are practically enduring intellectual slavery. Our writing service, on the other hand, gives you a chance to work with a professional paper writer. We employ only native English speakers. But having good English isn't the only skill needed to ace papers, right? Therefore we require each and every paper writer to have a bachelor's, master's, or Ph.D., along with 3+ years of experience in academic writing. If the paper writer ticks these boxes, they get mock tasks, and only with their perfect completion do they proceed to the interview process.

Cannes Film Festival: Red Carpet Roundup

The best fashion from an event with a lot of photo ops.

Jane Birkin pairing her beaded dress with a basket. Madonna in a Jean-Paul Gaultier cone bra and a garter set. Kristen Stewart barefoot in Chanel chain mail. Spike Lee in a sunset-inspired suit.

The Cannes Film Festival, with its sheer preponderance of red carpets and boardwalk photo ops, its blockbusters and art house flicks, has given the world more indelible fashion moments than any other festival. In 2002, Sharon Stone made so many dramatic red carpet entrances as a member of the Cannes jury that she managed to revive her flagging career through the power of clothes alone.

This festival, held on the French Riviera, is taking place from May 14 to May 25 this year. It has been off to a glamorous start — and some attendees threw down the fashion gauntlet even before its official opening ceremony on Tuesday evening.

The actress Anya Taylor-Joy , who is in Cannes to promote “Furiosa,” the latest “Mad Max” movie, made waves by stepping out on Monday in a Jacquemus straw hat so large it doubled as a portable sunshade. The filmmaker Greta Gerwig, whose job as president of the festival’s competition jury means packing 10 days’ worth of outfits, stopped by a photo call on Tuesday morning wearing an hourglass-effect, blue-and-white-striped milkmaid dress straight from the latest Maison Margiela couture collection .

Indeed, what makes the Cannes Film Festival such irresistible eye candy is that it’s not only a parade of grand gowns and tuxedos, but also a panoply of accessible sunshine style.

The fashion show really kicked off with the opening ceremony, attended by stars like Léa Seydoux, Jane Fonda, Lily Gladstone and Meryl Streep, who was honored with a lifetime achievement Palme d’Or award. As the fashion editor Miranda Priestly in “The Devil Wears Prada,” Ms. Streep gave the world a description of the trickle-down fashion effect that has yet to be beaten. Today the Côte d’Azur, tomorrow your closet? It’s not as far-fetched as it sounds.
