Don‘t let the process of writing your college essay overwhelm you, we’ve lined up the best free resources that will help make your writing stand out

Sitting down and writing your college essay can be a daunting task. A blank page staring back at you with 650 words remaining to set you apart from all the other candidates. Not to mention convincing a total stranger that you belong at their school.

While students may find themselves stuck searching for an impressive topic or story that will jump off the pages, it’s important to remember that Admissions Officers want to know what you have learned, rather than what you did.

“It’s the one place in your admissions application where admissions officers get to hear about you. Who you are and what you value in your own voice,” says Rob Franek, editor-in-chief of The Princeton Review in his College Admissions 101 web series.

As Franek mentions, the key for students in writing your college essay is finding your voice. A voice that distinguishes you and allows you to connect with the reader through an experience that has shaped you into who you are.

Finding the time to craft your essay during the school year is easier said than done, with multiple priorities all vying for your attention. Take a deep breath!

The summer months offer a great opportunity for rising seniors to begin writing your college essay, including the personal statement. Prompts for the personal statement for the Common App post on May 1, meaning you can begin crafting essays over the summer.

Essay on Industrial Revolution

The Impact of Rationing during World War II on Everyday Life

This essay about rationing during World War II examines how governments managed scarce resources and its effects on daily life. It highlights how rationing systems in the UK and the US controlled the distribution of food, clothing, and other essentials through ration books and coupons. The essay explores the impact on culinary habits, with people adopting new recipes and food preservation methods. It also discusses changes in fashion and consumer behavior, with campaigns like “Make Do and Mend.” Socially, rationing fostered a sense of unity but also exposed inequalities. The essay concludes by noting how wartime rationing influenced post-war policies on resource management and social welfare.

How it works

The practice of rationing during the tumult of World War II represented a pivotal endeavor by authorities to equitably allocate scant resources among civilians and military personnel. This strategic measure wielded profound ramifications on daily existence, reshaping not only dietary customs and social mores but also economic dynamics. Delving into the multifaceted dimensions of rationing unveils insights into the resilience and adaptability of societies grappling with the exigencies of global conflict.

The eruption of World War II wrought havoc upon international trade conduits and stretched supply networks to their limits, engendering acute scarcities of indispensable commodities.

In response, governmental entities instituted rationing frameworks to streamline the judicious utilization of finite resources and forestall the perils of hoarding and clandestine markets. For instance, in the United Kingdom, the Ministry of Food distributed ration books to the populace, containing vouchers earmarked for specific provisions like meat, sugar, dairy, and attire. These ration credentials assumed an integral role in quotidian life, dictating both the nature and quantum of goods procurable on a weekly basis.

Similarly, rationing proliferated across the United States, albeit with nuanced modalities. The Office of Price Administration (OPA) assumed oversight of price regulation and rationing endeavors. American citizens received ration books akin to their British counterparts, replete with stamps apportioned for various commodities, encompassing fuel, rubber, and victuals such as java and canned products. Victory gardens, small-scale horticultural plots cultivated domestically, emerged as a popular recourse to complement rations and amplify agricultural output. These gardens not only conferred practical remedies to food scarcities but also served as a morale tonic, fostering communal bonds and a shared sense of purpose.

The repercussions of rationing reverberated through dietary customs and gastronomic practices. Confronted with constrained provisions, individuals innovated resourceful strategies to stretch their allotments and eke out sustenance from meager supplies. Culinary guides and governmental directives proffered recipes and counsel on fashioning nutritious repasts from rationed ingredients. In Britain, the Ministry of Food extolled concoctions like Woolton Pie, a vegetable-infused savory pastry christened in honor of Lord Woolton, the Minister of Food. These gastronomic concoctions underscored an emphasis on utilizing locally available and homegrown produce. Furthermore, the accentuation on thriftiness and reduction of wastage propelled the popularization of food preservation techniques such as canning and pickling, assuming indispensable skills for myriad households.

Beyond the epicurean domain, rationing left an indelible imprint on sartorial proclivities and consumer comportment. Attire became subject to rationing quotas, necessitating vouchers for the acquisition of new habiliments. This engendered the “Make Do and Mend” ethos, advocating for the refurbishment and repurposing of extant garments as opposed to procuring new ones. Innovations in sartorial design ensued, with utility attire gaining vogue. These garments, characterized by parsimonious utilization of fabric and resources, seamlessly melded functionality with aesthetics. The populace’s ingenuity in adapting to these strictures epitomized a broader societal shift toward parsimony and sustainability that endured beyond the cessation of hostilities.

The sociocultural repercussions of rationing extended across myriad facets of communal life. Collective privations engendered a sense of camaraderie and concerted endeavor, indispensable for buttressing morale amidst the throes of war. Nonetheless, rationing also precipitated quandaries and disparities. Illicit markets burgeoned, while those endowed with greater affluence or connections often navigated loopholes to circumvent restrictions. Despite endeavors to ensure equitability, differentials in access to provisions at times fomented discord and animosity within communities.

Moreover, rationing exerted a formative influence on post-war policy paradigms and societal attitudes toward resource stewardship and social welfare. The collective ordeal of austerity and the efficaciousness of rationing schemas in preserving stability during wartime furnished impetus for the institution of comprehensive social safety nets in numerous nations. In the United Kingdom, for instance, the ethos of equitable distribution and governmental intervention in ensuring rudimentary needs were met laid the groundwork for the post-war welfare state.

In summation, rationing during World War II epitomized a multifaceted policy endeavor with far-reaching repercussions on quotidian life, economic dynamics, and societal frameworks. It necessitated profound adaptations in dietary regimens, sartorial preferences, and communal interactions. The resourcefulness and adaptability evinced during this epoch stand as testaments to human resilience in the face of adversity. Rationing not only served as a mechanism for ameliorating scarcity during the crucible of conflict but also bequeathed a lasting legacy on how societies grappled with resource management and social equity in the ensuing epochs.

Artificial Intelligence Computing Leadership from NVIDIA

Press Release Details

Nvidia nim revolutionizes model deployment, now available to transform world’s millions of developers into generative ai developers.

  • 150+ Partners Across Every Layer of AI Ecosystem Embedding NIM Inference Microservices to Speed Enterprise AI Application Deployments From Weeks to Minutes
  • NVIDIA Developer Program Members Gain Free Access to NIM for Research, Development and Testing

TAIPEI, Taiwan, June 02, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- COMPUTEX -- NVIDIA today announced that the world’s 28 million developers can now download NVIDIA NIM ™ — inference microservices that provide models as optimized containers — to deploy on clouds, data centers or workstations, giving them the ability to easily build generative AI applications for copilots, chatbots and more, in minutes rather than weeks.

These new generative AI applications are becoming increasingly complex and often utilize multiple models with different capabilities for generating text, images, video, speech and more. NVIDIA NIM dramatically increases developer productivity by providing a simple, standardized way to add generative AI to their applications.

NIM also enables enterprises to maximize their infrastructure investments. For example, running Meta Llama 3-8B in a NIM produces up to 3x more generative AI tokens on accelerated infrastructure than without NIM. This lets enterprises boost efficiency and use the same amount of compute infrastructure to generate more responses.

Nearly 200 technology partners — including Cadence, Cloudera , Cohesity , DataStax , NetApp , Scale AI and Synopsys — are integrating NIM into their platforms to speed generative AI deployments for domain-specific applications, such as copilots, code assistants and digital human avatars. Hugging Face is now offering NIM — starting with Meta Llama 3 .

“Every enterprise is looking to add generative AI to its operations, but not every enterprise has a dedicated team of AI researchers,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. “Integrated into platforms everywhere, accessible to developers everywhere, running everywhere — NVIDIA NIM is helping the technology industry put generative AI in reach for every organization.”

Enterprises can deploy AI applications in production with NIM through the NVIDIA AI Enterprise software platform. Starting next month, members of the NVIDIA Developer Program can access NIM for free for research, development and testing on their preferred infrastructure.

40+ NIM Microservices Power Gen AI Models Across Modalities NIM containers are pre-built to speed model deployment for GPU-accelerated inference and can include NVIDIA CUDA ® software, NVIDIA Triton Inference Server ™ and NVIDIA TensorRT™-LLM software.

Over 40 NVIDIA and community models are available to experience as NIM endpoints on ai.nvidia.com , including Databricks DBRX , Google’s open model Gemma, Meta Llama 3, Microsoft Phi-3, Mistral Large, Mixtral 8x22B and Snowflake Arctic.

Developers can now access NVIDIA NIM microservices for Meta Llama 3 models from the Hugging Face AI platform. This lets developers easily access and run the Llama 3 NIM in just a few clicks using Hugging Face Inference Endpoints, powered by NVIDIA GPUs on their preferred cloud.

Enterprises can use NIM to run applications for generating text, images and video, speech and digital humans. With NVIDIA BioNeMo ™ NIM microservices for digital biology, researchers can build novel protein structures to accelerate drug discovery.

Dozens of healthcare companies are deploying NIM to power generative AI inference across a range of applications, including surgical planning, digital assistants, drug discovery and clinical trial optimization.

With new NVIDIA ACE NIM microservices , developers can easily build and operate interactive, lifelike digital humans in applications for customer service, telehealth, education, gaming and entertainment.

Hundreds of AI Ecosyst em Partners Embedding NIM Platform providers including Canonical , Red Hat , Nutanix and VMware (acquired by Broadcom) are supporting NIM on open-source KServe or enterprise solutions. AI application companies Hippocratic AI , Glean , Kinetica and Redis are also deploying NIM to power generative AI inference.

Leading AI tools and MLOps partners — including Amazon SageMaker, Microsoft Azure AI, Dataiku, DataRobot, deepset , Domino Data Lab, LangChain , Llama Index , Replicate , Run.ai, Saturn Cloud , Securiti AI and Weights & Biases — have also embedded NIM into their platforms to enable developers to build and deploy domain-specific generative AI applications with optimized inference.

Global system integrators and service delivery partners Accenture, Deloitte, Infosys, Latentview , Quantiphi , SoftServe, TCS and Wipro have created NIM competencies to help the world’s enterprises quickly develop and deploy production AI strategies.

Enterprises can run NIM-enabled applications virtually anywhere, including on NVIDIA-Certified Systems ™ from global infrastructure manufacturers Cisco, Dell Technologies , Hewlett-Packard Enterprise , Lenovo and Supermicro, as well as server manufacturers ASRock Rack , ASUS , GIGABYTE , Ingrasys , Inventec , Pegatron , QCT, Wistron and Wiwynn. NIM microservices have also been integrated into Amazon Web Services , Google Cloud , Azure and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure .

Titans of Industry Amp Up Gener ative AI With NIM Industry leaders Foxconn, Pegatron, Amdocs , Lowe’s, ServiceNow and Siemens are among the businesses using NIM for generative AI applications in manufacturing, healthcare, financial services, retail, customer service and more:

  • Foxconn — the world’s largest electronics manufacturer — is using NIM in the development of domain-specific LLMs embedded into a variety of internal systems and processes in its AI factories for smart manufacturing, smart cities and smart electric vehicles.
  • Pegatron — a Taiwanese electronics manufacturing company — is leveraging NIM for Project TaME, a Taiwan Mixtral of Experts model designed to advance the development of local LLMs for industries.

Two big computer vision papers boost prospect of safer self-driving vehicles

New chip and camera technology bring closer potential of hands-free road time.

Like nuclear fusion and jet-packs, the self-driving car is a long-promised technology that has stalled for years - yet armed with research, boffins think they have created potential improvements.

Citizens of Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles are able to take one of Waymo's self-driving taxis, first introduced to the public in December 2020. But they have not been without their glitches. Just last month in San Francisco, for example, one of the taxi service's autonomous vehicles drove down the wrong side of the street to pass a unicycle. In December last year, a Waymo vehicle hit a backwards-facing pickup truck , resulting in a report with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and a software update.

But this week, not one but two groups of researchers bidding to improve the performance of self-driving cars and other autonomous vehicles have published papers in the international science journal Nature.

A design for a new chip geared towards autonomous vehicles has arrived from China. Tsinghua University's Luping Shi and colleagues have taken inspiration from the human visual system by both combining low-accuracy, fast event-based detection with more accurate, but slower visualization of an image.

The researchers were able to show the chip — dubbed Tianmouc — could process pixel arrays quickly and robustly in an automotive driving perception system.

In a paper published today, the authors said: "We demonstrate the integration of a Tianmouc chip into an autonomous driving system, showcasing its abilities to enable accurate, fast and robust perception, even in challenging corner cases on open roads. The primitive-based complementary sensing paradigm helps in overcoming fundamental limitations in developing vision systems for diverse open-world applications."

In a separate paper, Davide Scaramuzza, University of Zurich robotics and perception professor, and his colleagues adopt a similar hybrid approach but apply it to camera technologies.

Youtube Video

Cameras for self-driving vehicles navigate a trade-off between bandwidth and latency. While high-res color cameras have good resolution, they require high bandwidth to detect rapid changes. Conversely, reducing the bandwidth increases latency, affecting the timely processing of data for potentially life-saving decision making.

To get out of this bind, the Swiss-based researchers developed a hybrid camera combining event processing with high-bandwidth image processing. Events cameras only record intensity changes, and report them as sparse measurements, meaning the system does not suffer from the bandwidth/latency trade-off.

The event camera is used to detect changes in the blind time between image frames using events. Event data converted into a graph, which changes over time and connects nearby points, is computed locally. The resulting hybrid object detector reduces the detection time in dangerous high-speed situations, according to an explanatory video.

Among AI infrastructure hopefuls, Qualcomm has become an unlikely ally

  • GhostStripe attack haunts self-driving cars by making them ignore road signs
  • Boston Dynamics' humanoid Atlas is dead, long live the ... new commercial Atlas
  • US military pulls the trigger, uses AI to target air strikes

In their paper , the authors say: "Our method exploits the high temporal resolution and sparsity of events and the rich but low temporal resolution information in standard images to generate efficient, high-rate object detections, reducing perceptual and computational latency."

They argue their use of a 20 frames per second RGB camera plus an event camera can achieve the same latency as a 5,000-fps camera with the bandwidth of a 45-fps camera without compromising accuracy.

"Our approach paves the way for efficient and robust perception in edge-case scenarios by uncovering the potential of event cameras," the authors write.

With a hybrid approach to both cameras and data processing in the offing, more widespread adoption of self-driving vehicles may be just around the corner. ®
