Helping people is a sign to them to show you care. I am sure everyone has helped someone else at least once, as it is a common thing. Further on in this essay I will state various times when I have helped someone.

Like many people, I have a sibling. He is younger than me so I help him many times. I help my brother with many things such as helping him with his homework, keeping him entertained when he is bored and ensuring of his safety. But sometimes there are significant events where he really needs my help such as when he gets bullied or badly injured and there is no one else around who can help him. Something like this happened at school. At lunch while I was enjoying my delicious sandwich my brother came up to me and said that his friends were running away from him. As an older sister I was alarmed and angry with those who upset my little brother. So, as most people would do, I took my brother's hand and he lead me to his friends. I told my brother's friends that this was an impolite thing to be doing and was unkind. As I was a senior in the school, my brother's friends did not argue and started to play with my brother.

Another instance when I have helped someone, was when I spotted a girl a little younger than I was who was injured and crying on the footpath. I approached her cautiously and bent down to ask her what had happened. She told me that she was going on a jog alone but she slipped and grazed her knees and hands and that now she couldn't get up. I straight away knew what to do. I asked her to calm down and not move so I could go and get my parents to assist her. Once I had gotten my parents and some bandages she told my parents what her parent's phone number was. We told the girl's parents where she was, and within five minutes they had come and picked her up.

You can help people whether you know them or not. Usually what I feel is that after you help someone you feel happy and glad about what you have just done. So go and help people in need because it will help you to feel happy too.

It was back in first grade, we had a big house, my parents were doctors and I’m studying In a good school. I was rich back then. When I first met this half Chinese person named William 1. Mm, I TLD care at all.

My dad hired him for the reason to work for our family. For one thing, he drives me and my siblings to school. I guess he was a driver. I always see him cleaning off the leaves from the roof, washing the cars, and watering the garden. I didn’t talk to him; I Just know he is getting paid for what he does.

After school, he came to pick us up and I suddenly heard, “Your name Ingrain, right? ” I nodded and gave him a smile.

I made a friend with a 30-year old man, It was unbelievable but I TLD think that way. He was someone I could talk to, I could play with, and he’s the kind of person you can get along so easily. One time, I saw him by the window watering the orchids and plants. I went downstairs to look how he does the watering. He saw me and said “Hi there! ” I smiled and went closer to him. “What’s that? ” I asked.

When I Help Someone Essay

I asked again. “It’s for the plants to grow healthy. ” I keep on asking questions but he never gets tired of answering. So basically, I was a kid who needs answers. He was like a teacher and he’s a good artist too, Whenever I have projects, he would give me his time to do it. When he picks me up at school, and by the time I finished my homework, I would go to him and spend time asking and learning new things from him. He was a good man after all. William was a poor guy. He has a wife and four children to feed. My dad let him move and build a simple house on a lot we owned.

With that, he wont have to pay any rent. I grew up and still he was there, still working for our family, still a driver. My dad find him very loyal and I do too. I have a lot more thinking than before but I’m still a kid to him and our friendship grew even more. At school, we were waiting for my sister in the car, and all we do is to debate. We would talk about certain things and before you know it, the subject changes. That time I knew I was killing the time and having fun. He didn’t finish school but he knows a lot of things. “Why do you know these things?

I asked him one time when he was at the garden. All he said was, “It’s all about experience. ” And I was wondering to myself, “What’s that mean? ” It was confusing at first but I finally get the message. Just Like me, I learn new things from asking especially with him. I never thought It would be that fun. I help him bathe the dogs; I would join him to buy something my mom asked. He was Just hired as a driver but he still gave time and effort to do the things he’s not supposed to. He was truly amazing. I know a guy like him has some troubles too.

He once told me, he’s son got sick and can’t afford medicine. I said, now that my parents are doctors, they would be glad to help you. Sunday night, I was watching TV at my parent’s room and we suddenly heard a doorbell. “Ingrain, get It. ” My dad ordered. I stood up, walking down the stairs thinking, “It’s 10:30 in the evening, who could it be. ” I picked up the door and saw William by the gate. He looks alone and I wonder why he’s here in the middle of the night. I open the gate and he wasn’t alone, I saw him carrying his child. “What’s wrong? ” I asked. “Is your dad there? Fee” He looks very troubled. “My son is sick so can you ask your dad If you could check him up? ” “Okay, you better come Inside. ” I said. I hurried up to my parent’s room Ana tell teem Williams nerve. My ciao chicken Nils son Ana sake me to get ten medicine from the box. I know my dad would help because he was the kind of doctor who helps the person in need. I gave him the medicine we have at home and the good thing is he doesn’t have to pay. I was happy for him and hoped for his son to get well. Unfortunately, the next morning, it was Monday; it’s time for him to drive us to school.

I asked him about his son, “it’s not looking good. ” “Oh. ” I said sadly. “Can I borrow some money? ” I know I heard him right but I asked myself why. Mimi see, my son badly sick and I can’t afford money. ” He added. I know I get allowances from my parents and I barely use it, but I didn’t expect those words to be hearing from him. My brother and sister were coming and I said, “I’ll give you later after school. ” Definitely it was hesitation I felt. My day starts, thinking about Williams problem. Out of the blue, he Just asked a kid like me for money.

I came home and look by the window and saw him wiping the car, and I made a decision. I came downstairs and gave him an envelope. “Thank you very much; I’ll pay you back little by little. ” He really looks happy but still troubled. “Sure, but don’t think about it that much, I can wait you know. ” I replied and he smiled. I was kind of happy that day. I don’t know why but I was happy I did something good. At school, the teacher always teaches us about helping people and I never thought I would be doing that. I never told my parents about this nor did William.

It was a secret between us. The reason I didn’t tell my parents was there was no need for them to know, it’s what I thought. It was time for me to act on my own, I need to make decision. He needs the money more than I do, even though I’m Just a kid, he needed my help. It’s been nine years now, I grew and grew. William was there, watching me grow up. I still help him, even though it’s from own things, I still would find a good way to help him. I didn’t regret the first time I helped him. I’m Just happy I was helping someone and giving smiles to him and to his Emily.

I still didn’t tell my parents, I know what I did, what I decided was right. When Christmas comes, I would give away my old stuff, my old clothes to him. Besides, I will not use it anymore, and his children need it. He’s still a driver and I would still ask him questions, still learning new things from him and still be helping him. That one day I helped William taught me something, something William said, “It’s all about experience. ” I finally know the answer. There may be new challenges to come but things here always go back the way it should be.

What Is a Community Service Essay? Why Do You Need One?

A community service essay is an essay that describes the volunteer work you did and the impact it had on you and your community. Community service essays can vary widely depending on specific requirements listed in the application, but, in general, they describe the work you did, why you found the work important, and how it benefited people around you.

Community service essays are typically needed for two reasons:

#1: To Apply to College

• Some colleges require students to write community service essays as part of their application or to be eligible for certain scholarships.
• You may also choose to highlight your community service work in your personal statement.

#2: To Apply for Scholarships

• Some scholarships are specifically awarded to students with exceptional community service experiences, and many use community service essays to help choose scholarship recipients.
• Green Mountain College offers one of the most famous of these scholarships. Their "Make a Difference Scholarship" offers full tuition, room, and board to students who have demonstrated a significant, positive impact through their community service

Getting Started With Your Essay

In the following sections, I'll go over each step of how to plan and write your essay. I'll also include sample excerpts for you to look through so you can get a better idea of what readers are looking for when they review your essay.

Step 1: Know the Essay Requirements

Before your start writing a single word, you should be familiar with the essay prompt. Each college or scholarship will have different requirements for their essay, so make sure you read these carefully and understand them.

Specific things to pay attention to include:

• Length requirement
• Application deadline
• The main purpose or focus of the essay
• If the essay should follow a specific structure

Below are three real community service essay prompts. Read through them and notice how much they vary in terms of length, detail, and what information the writer should include.

From the Equitable Excellence Scholarship:

"Describe your outstanding achievement in depth and provide the specific planning, training, goals, and steps taken to make the accomplishment successful. Include details about your role and highlight leadership you provided. Your essay must be a minimum of 350 words but not more than 600 words."

From the Laura W. Bush Traveling Scholarship:

"Essay (up to 500 words, double spaced) explaining your interest in being considered for the award and how your proposed project reflects or is related to both UNESCO's mandate and U.S. interests in promoting peace by sharing advances in education, science, culture, and communications."

From the LULAC National Scholarship Fund:

"Please type or print an essay of 300 words (maximum) on how your academic studies will contribute to your personal & professional goals. In addition, please discuss any community service or extracurricular activities you have been involved in that relate to your goals."

Step 2: Brainstorm Ideas

Even after you understand what the essay should be about, it can still be difficult to begin writing. Answer the following questions to help brainstorm essay ideas. You may be able to incorporate your answers into your essay.

• What community service activity that you've participated in has meant the most to you?
• What is your favorite memory from performing community service?
• Why did you decide to begin community service?
• What made you decide to volunteer where you did?
• How has your community service changed you?
• How has your community service helped others?
• How has your community service affected your plans for the future?

You don't need to answer all the questions, but if you find you have a lot of ideas for one of two of them, those may be things you want to include in your essay.

Writing Your Essay

How you structure your essay will depend on the requirements of the scholarship or school you are applying to. You may give an overview of all the work you did as a volunteer, or highlight a particularly memorable experience. You may focus on your personal growth or how your community benefited.

Regardless of the specific structure requested, follow the guidelines below to make sure your community service essay is memorable and clearly shows the impact of your work.

Samples of mediocre and excellent essays are included below to give you a better idea of how you should draft your own essay.

Step 1: Hook Your Reader In

You want the person reading your essay to be interested, so your first sentence should hook them in and entice them to read more. A good way to do this is to start in the middle of the action. Your first sentence could describe you helping build a house, releasing a rescued animal back to the wild, watching a student you tutored read a book on their own, or something else that quickly gets the reader interested. This will help set your essay apart and make it more memorable.

Compare these two opening sentences:

"I have volunteered at the Wishbone Pet Shelter for three years."

"The moment I saw the starving, mud-splattered puppy brought into the shelter with its tail between its legs, I knew I'd do whatever I could to save it."

The first sentence is a very general, bland statement. The majority of community service essays probably begin a lot like it, but it gives the reader little information and does nothing to draw them in. On the other hand, the second sentence begins immediately with action and helps persuade the reader to keep reading so they can learn what happened to the dog.

Step 2: Discuss the Work You Did

Once you've hooked your reader in with your first sentence, tell them about your community service experiences. State where you work, when you began working, how much time you've spent there, and what your main duties include. This will help the reader quickly put the rest of the essay in context and understand the basics of your community service work.

Not including basic details about your community service could leave your reader confused.

Step 3: Include Specific Details

It's the details of your community service that make your experience unique and memorable, so go into the specifics of what you did.

For example, don't just say you volunteered at a nursing home; talk about reading Mrs. Johnson her favorite book, watching Mr. Scott win at bingo, and seeing the residents play games with their grandchildren at the family day you organized. Try to include specific activities, moments, and people in your essay. Having details like these let the readers really understand what work you did and how it differs from other volunteer experiences.

Compare these two passages:

"For my volunteer work, I tutored children at a local elementary school. I helped them improve their math skills and become more confident students."

"As a volunteer at York Elementary School, I worked one-on-one with second and third graders who struggled with their math skills, particularly addition, subtraction, and fractions. As part of my work, I would create practice problems and quizzes and try to connect math to the students' interests. One of my favorite memories was when Sara, a student I had been working with for several weeks, told me that she enjoyed the math problems I had created about a girl buying and selling horses so much that she asked to help me create math problems for other students."

The first passage only gives basic information about the work done by the volunteer; there is very little detail included, and no evidence is given to support her claims. How did she help students improve their math skills? How did she know they were becoming more confident?

The second passage is much more detailed. It recounts a specific story and explains more fully what kind of work the volunteer did, as well as a specific instance of a student becoming more confident with her math skills. Providing more detail in your essay helps support your claims as well as make your essay more memorable and unique.

Step 4: Show Your Personality

It would be very hard to get a scholarship or place at a school if none of your readers felt like they knew much about you after finishing your essay, so make sure that your essay shows your personality. The way to do this is to state your personal strengths, then provide examples to support your claims. Take some time to think about which parts of your personality you would like your essay to highlight, then write about specific examples to show this.

• If you want to show that you're a motivated leader, describe a time when you organized an event or supervised other volunteers.
• If you want to show your teamwork skills, write about a time you helped a group of people work together better.
• If you want to show that you're a compassionate animal lover, write about taking care of neglected shelter animals and helping each of them find homes.

Step 5: State What You Accomplished

After you have described your community service and given specific examples of your work, you want to begin to wrap your essay up by stating your accomplishments. What was the impact of your community service? Did you build a house for a family to move into? Help students improve their reading skills? Clean up a local park? Make sure the impact of your work is clear; don't be worried about bragging here.

If you can include specific numbers, that will also strengthen your essay. Saying "I delivered meals to 24 home-bound senior citizens" is a stronger example than just saying "I delivered meals to lots of senior citizens."

Also be sure to explain why your work matters. Why is what you did important? Did it provide more parks for kids to play in? Help students get better grades? Give people medical care who would otherwise not have gotten it? This is an important part of your essay, so make sure to go into enough detail that your readers will know exactly what you accomplished and how it helped your community.

"My biggest accomplishment during my community service was helping to organize a family event at the retirement home. The children and grandchildren of many residents attended, and they all enjoyed playing games and watching movies together."

"The community service accomplishment that I'm most proud of is the work I did to help organize the First Annual Family Fun Day at the retirement home. My job was to design and organize fun activities that senior citizens and their younger relatives could enjoy. The event lasted eight hours and included ten different games, two performances, and a movie screening with popcorn. Almost 200 residents and family members attended throughout the day. This event was important because it provided an opportunity for senior citizens to connect with their family members in a way they aren't often able to. It also made the retirement home seem more fun and enjoyable to children, and we have seen an increase in the number of kids coming to visit their grandparents since the event."

The second passage is stronger for a variety of reasons. First, it goes into much more detail about the work the volunteer did. The first passage only states that she helped "organize a family event." That really doesn't tell readers much about her work or what her responsibilities were. The second passage is much clearer; her job was to "design and organize fun activities."

The second passage also explains the event in more depth. A family day can be many things; remember that your readers are likely not familiar with what you're talking about, so details help them get a clearer picture.

Lastly, the second passage makes the importance of the event clear: it helped residents connect with younger family members, and it helped retirement homes seem less intimidating to children, so now some residents see their grand kids more often.

Step 6: Discuss What You Learned

One of the final things to include in your essay should be the impact that your community service had on you. You can discuss skills you learned, such as carpentry, public speaking, animal care, or another skill.

You can also talk about how you changed personally. Are you more patient now? More understanding of others? Do you have a better idea of the type of career you want? Go into depth about this, but be honest. Don't say your community service changed your life if it didn't because trite statements won't impress readers.

In order to support your statements, provide more examples. If you say you're more patient now, how do you know this? Do you get less frustrated while playing with your younger siblings? Are you more willing to help group partners who are struggling with their part of the work? You've probably noticed by now that including specific examples and details is one of the best ways to create a strong and believable essay .

"As a result of my community service, I learned a lot about building houses and became a more mature person."

"As a result of my community service, I gained hands-on experience in construction. I learned how to read blueprints, use a hammer and nails, and begin constructing the foundation of a two-bedroom house. Working on the house could be challenging at times, but it taught me to appreciate the value of hard work and be more willing to pitch in when I see someone needs help. My dad has just started building a shed in our backyard, and I offered to help him with it because I know from my community service how much work it is. I also appreciate my own house more, and I know how lucky I am to have a roof over my head."

The second passage is more impressive and memorable because it describes the skills the writer learned in more detail and recounts a specific story that supports her claim that her community service changed her and made her more helpful.

Step 7: Finish Strong

Just as you started your essay in a way that would grab readers' attention, you want to finish your essay on a strong note as well. A good way to end your essay is to state again the impact your work had on you, your community, or both. Reiterate how you changed as a result of your community service, why you found the work important, or how it helped others.

Compare these two concluding statements:

"In conclusion, I learned a lot from my community service at my local museum, and I hope to keep volunteering and learning more about history."

"To conclude, volunteering at my city's American History Museum has been a great experience. By leading tours and participating in special events, I became better at public speaking and am now more comfortable starting conversations with people. In return, I was able to get more community members interested in history and our local museum. My interest in history has deepened, and I look forward to studying the subject in college and hopefully continuing my volunteer work at my university's own museum."

The second passage takes each point made in the first passage and expands upon it. In a few sentences, the second passage is able to clearly convey what work the volunteer did, how she changed, and how her volunteer work benefited her community.

The author of the second passage also ends her essay discussing her future and how she'd like to continue her community service, which is a good way to wrap things up because it shows your readers that you are committed to community service for the long-term.

Can Helping Others Help You Find Meaning in Life?

The idea that helping others is part of a meaningful life has been around for thousands of years. Aristotle wrote that finding happiness and fulfillment is achieved “by loving rather than in being loved.” According to the psychologist Carol Ryff, who reviewed the writings of numerous philosophers throughout history, relationships with others are “ a central feature of a positive, well-lived life .”

Yet today many of us seem to be struggling to find meaning by gathering up achievements, spending so much time at work that we’re cut off from other people.

Are we headed down the wrong path? New research is providing more and more evidence that kind and helpful behavior causes us to feel that our lives are meaningful, and discovering what we can do to reap those benefits.

Relationships and the meaningful life

Often, psychologists have distinguished between two types of well-being: hedonic well-being (a sense of happiness) and eudaimonic well-being (a sense of meaning and purpose). Although happiness and meaning overlap significantly, researchers suspected that helping others is especially crucial to developing a sense of meaning.

A recent study by Roy Baumeister at Florida State University sought to investigate this and other differences between happiness and meaning. In a survey of over 300 participants, the researchers looked for traits and behaviors that were related to happiness (but not meaningfulness) and vice versa. The researchers found that having strong social connections was important for both happiness and meaningfulness. However, helping others in need and identifying oneself as a “giver” in relationships were related to meaning alone. 

Baumeister points out that a meaningful life is different for everyone (since the cultural messages we have been exposed to can impact what we see as meaningful). However, the research on meaning in life points to one factor that appears to be important for all of us: developing high-quality relationships.

Does helping promote a sense of meaning?

But does behaving in a kind and helpful way (“prosocially”) actually cause us to feel that our lives have more meaning? While it may seem intuitive that helping others goes along with a meaningful life, it’s possible to imagine a variety of different explanations for this: Perhaps those who feel like their lives have meaning are more motivated to help others, or perhaps some other factor (for example, being religious) causes people to be helpful and experience more meaning in their life.

A recent article published in The Journal of Positive Psychology by Daryl Van Tongeren and his colleagues sought to examine this relationship. In a preliminary study, the researchers asked over 400 participants to report on how frequently they engage in different altruistic behaviors (such as volunteering) and how meaningful their life feels. Participants who were more altruistic reported a greater sense of purpose and meaning in their lives.

In a second study, the researchers sought to assess whether expressing gratitude , which is considered a prosocial emotion , could actually cause participants to report a greater sense of meaning. In this study, some participants wrote letters of gratitude to someone who had impacted their lives, while some participants wrote about other topics. The researchers found that participants who wrote gratitude letters subsequently reported that their lives were more meaningful than did other participants. Importantly, this study addresses the issue of causality; since participants were randomly assigned to write about gratitude or other topics, it appears that expressing a prosocial emotion actually increased their sense of purpose.

Why does helping make life more meaningful?

According to Van Tongeren, engaging in altruistic acts may allow us to find fulfillment because it improves our relationships. To test out this idea, the researchers asked participants about their prosocial behavior, meaning in life, and level of relationship satisfaction. They found that prosocial behavior and meaning in life were linked, and that relationship satisfaction—in other words, the quality of people’s relationships—partially accounted for that link.

Another factor that might come into play is detailed in a 2010 study published in The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology . According to this article, when we choose to engage in prosocial actions, it helps to meet our basic psychological needs: for autonomy (feeling that we have freely chosen our actions), competence (feeling that we are good and capable), and relatedness (feeling close to others).

In one study testing this idea, participants were either allowed to choose to give money to someone else in the study, or told by the researchers how much money to give. For participants who freely chose how much to give (although not for participants who were told how much to give), giving more money was related to higher well-being and to feeling that their psychological needs were met. Importantly, that feeling accounted for the link between giving and well-being, suggesting that giving may improve well-being because it helps us meet our psychological needs.

Taken together, these two studies suggest that helping others is beneficial because it fulfills basic human needs—and that altruism may be especially important for strengthening our relationships and connecting us with others.

How to increase your sense of meaning

The research described above suggests that giving helps us feel more connected to others, which imbues our lives with a sense of meaning. Do you want to live a more meaningful life? The suggestions below can help you take the first steps.

• Start small. You don’t need to begin with grand gestures; even small, everyday behaviors can have an impact on others and on your own sense of well-being. For example, in a study published in Science , spending just five dollars on someone else led to boosts in happiness. The Eliciting Altruism practice includes strategies for starting a habit of kindness and generosity, such as reminding yourself of your connections to others and identifying with individuals who may need your help.
• Make your helping count. It turns out that not all types of giving have the same effects on us. The Making Giving Feel Good practice offers strategies for how to help others in a way that boosts your own sense of happiness and well-being. In particular, helping others can be especially effective when you can see the specific impact that your actions have.
• Take time to thank others. As the research presented here has shown, expressing gratitude towards others can be a prosocial act, too. When others take time to do something nice for you, making them feel appreciated can help build your relationship with them and make your life more meaningful. This exercise offers suggestions for how to write a Gratitude Letter like the ones in Van Tongeren’s study.

Recent research has provided evidence to support the idea that helping others goes hand in hand with meaningfulness. It’s not just that people who have already found their purpose in life enjoy giving back. Instead, helping others can actually create the sense of meaning we’re seeking. Rather than ruminating on what makes our life worthwhile as we work toward burnout, we can find the answer outside ourselves, in human connection.

Writing an essay about someone is not the easiest subject to write. One should write it in such a way that it talks of a person or two while at the same time it relates to how it applies to his or her opinion on a certain topic.

Why are some People a Good Topic for an Essay

Whatever the case, the more information you have about the relationship, the better your essay will be.

You may write about the relationship between you and the person you are writing about. Maybe it is a romantic relationship, a business relationship, or a friendship. Maybe it’s a family member , or maybe you have never met this person.

You should also try to explain what makes this person stand out from others in their field, or their life (or both): how do they compare to other people? What makes them so special?

2. Your Experience with them

Some people are just so fascinating that you could write a whole essay about them. Others are just average, or boring, and make for a poor essay topic. You need to be able to look at life objectively and see what makes good writing material and what does not.

Start by developing an idea about the person you want to write about — maybe it is someone you know well, or maybe it is someone you do not know very well but have observed from afar. The more details you can observe about a person, the better “material” they will be for your essay.

3. Their Achievements

You can write an essay about someone who has had a positive impact on your life. Also, you can use this essay as an opportunity to reflect on how that person has helped you grow and mature as a person.

Some people may have trouble writing about themselves.  So, if you know someone who fits that description, you could offer to write the essay for them. This is also a great opportunity for adults to reminisce about their childhood, and think about all of the people who helped them get where they are today.

If you choose to write about someone from your childhood, keep in mind that it’s a good idea to do some research on that person before starting your essay. As such, you can get a better sense of who they are and what makes them unique.

4. Their Failures

The best essays often feature about topics that may initially seem negative. Such include topics as coping with loss, enduring a difficult challenge, hoping for a better future, or dealing with the darker aspects of life.

In your essay, you must present yourself as someone who loves to learn, can think critically, and has a passion for things—anything.

5. Their Jobs

When you write a profile essay about someone with an interesting job, you can focus on what they do, how they got into it, and why they like the job. You can also focus on how they help others and how their job makes them feel.

Those people whose jobs serve the general public in some fashion are good candidates for profile essays. This includes doctors, nurses, teachers, police officers, and firemen, but also mechanics, janitors, housekeepers, and even waitresses.

The reason is that these people are doing something that affects at least a few of us daily. They have chosen a career or profession that most of us will need at one time or another in our lives.

6. Famous People or Stars

The first thing to think about when choosing a person to write about is why they are relevant to your course or subject. For example, writing about the historical figures of World War 2 is likely a good choice if you are in a history class, but it would not fit well in a biology class.

Once you find someone who fits into the curriculum, then you need to find someone who is interesting enough that many people will want to read what you wrote about them.

This means that most famous people are good choices because they have been written about so much that there is a lot of research available on their lives and deeds.

However, if you know something interesting about an obscure person, then they can also be good choices.

How to Write an Essay about Someone

Explain the person you are writing about.

Choose someone who you have interests in. It makes it easy for you to get more material on the subject since you love talking about the person and sharing their stories with other people. The person should be someone whose actions and beliefs have always been so informative to you, and they influence what you do and how you think.

The person should be someone who has had a significant influence on your life.

If you can’t meet the person, then research as much as possible about them before writing the essay. Start by asking questions from people who know them well.

Craft Your Thesis about the Person

Decide on your thesis statement. A thesis statement is a one- to two-sentence statement that presents the main idea and makes an assertion about your issue. You may have a longer thesis for much longer essays, but one to two sentences is a good general guideline.

And, remember, in an argumentative essay , the assertion you present in your thesis is going to be particularly important. When you make your assertion in your thesis, it should be clear and direct.

If your assertion is going to be controversial from some quarters, you want to make sure that it’s something that you can support with the evidence that you’ve included in your essay.

Write your arguments about him/her

Writing an essay about someone requires one to write about someone who you probably know or you have a strong feeling about or inspire you.

The feelings that you have towards such a person are the ones that will color your observation. Note that your observation should be specific like describing the physical features of the person, their personality, character, or any other aspect about them.

Cite and Reference

When writing an essay about someone, you need to cite and reference properly . This shows your tutor that you have a good understanding of academic writing and can use the proper methods when citing and referencing sources.

Talk about a person who helped you at some point in time, you should say:, what was the situation, how do you know him.

Well, I have received a number of things from my near and dear ones as presents. But here I would like to talk about a time when my grandfather helped me by giving me money as a birthday gift. I really wanted it at that time. This event made me highly elated. I explain it briefly.

About a couple of weeks ago, my parents had organized a birthday party on my 23rd birthday. It was a surprise party for me because they did not tell me about this party. On the day of my birthday, I passed my whole day as same as common days till evening time. Because at that time no one wished me for my birthday including my friends.

Perhaps, my mom included them in her plan for a surprise birthday party. I was feeling glooming for this behavior of my family members but I was astounded that they are doing something without informing me. Then, I was relaxing in my room, suddenly, my brother came and covered my eyes with his hands. He took me to the roof of my house.

After it, he said to me to open my eyes. When I opened my eyes, I saw that My parents as well as my some friends had organized a birthday party for me. I felt so astonished. They all wished me for my 23rd birthday. After it, I cut the cake and everybody who was at this event gave me presents. I thanked them.

Moreover, my grandfather gave me money, about 70 thousand rupees as a gift because he knew that I have need of a large amount of money to take admission in the computer course.

Firstly I denied it but my mother said to me to take it. Because my grandfather was giving it to me as his love. So, I accepted it.

Furthermore, I have taken admission in bachelor of computer application course with that money. All in all, this was the time when my grandfather helped me at a point.

Well! Today, I have to ask to speak about a person who helped me at some point in time in my life that could be a serious situation or a happier moment. In everyone’s life, there are lots of people from where he/she took help in any situation. Today I talk about a day 13 Feb 2017 which I can’t forget. On this day, I traveled from Chandigarh to Delhi to meet my friend. I was extremely excited to reach there.

And finally, I reached Delhi to my friend Ajaypal Singh’s house. He is really a polite and helping person. When I reached his home, I got a fever and started shivering due to the sudden heavy rain. He was getting worried about me and immediately called a doctor.

He found that I got some type of allergy which was largely spread in Delhi at that time. Due to that allergy, I couldn’t be able to come back so he took care and looked after me day night for a week. In that time, I got more respect and love in my heart for him.

He was our neighbor’s child. We both were a childhood friend. But in those days in 2017, I felt he was not only my friend, actually, but he also became my family. I was glad and felt blessed having a friend like him and pray to God that everyone should have like him.

Yes. I like helping people. It makes me feel good. I feel happy that I could help someone when they needed it the most.

I don’t keep count as to how many times I helped someone. There’s no big or small help, so yes, I do not keep count.

3 Did your parents teach you the importance of helping others?

My parents have always taught me to help selflessly. One should never expect anything in return. Always remember, they chose you to ask for help.

4 Have you ever refused to help others?

As much as I hate to not help, I did once refuse to help. I was really late for my flight and there was a huge crowd on the road asking for donations. I drove my car past them. I was already late. So if I had waited there, I would have missed the flight.

Describe a time when you helped someone.

You should say :

Sample Answer 1

Well. I try to help people whenever I can, even if it is in a small way. I try to help my parents with work in the house, and I usually help with the cooking whenever I am around at the time the meal is being made. If I come across beggars on the street, I often give them something, though not always. Sometimes I’m not sure they are really poor people because I’ve heard there are a lot of fakes who pretend to be poor or sick.

One time, in particular, I passed an older man who was begging. It was early in the morning, and I was on my way to a class. Something caused me to take special note of this man. I started to get some money out of my bag for him when it seemed as if a little voice inside told me to get some food for him instead. I hesitated for a moment, but I couldn’t shake the thought. So I went to the nearby market and bought him some fresh stuffed buns, about five of them and a cup of warm soy milk. Then I went back to the man and handed it to him, and said some kind words to him. I think he was delighted to have some warm food on a chilly morning.

Honestly, though, I think doing this might have made me happier than it did him. I felt good after helping him.

Sample Answer 2

Well, I like to believe that I am an empathetic person. Whenever possible, I like giving a helping hand to those in need. I stood like a rock for all of my friends throughout my school. However, this one time, I got an opportunity to help a stranger, and I dived deeper. So, in my entire school, there was only one disabled boy. He used to attend school in his wheelchair. Being considerate and supportive, our school management had appointed a peon specifically for him.

On one of the typical days, I was extremely late to school. I was the last person to enter the gates after the morning assembly. To avoid getting chastised by the teacher in front of everybody, I sprinted towards my class. On the way, I came across this boy who was steadily rolling his wheelchair toward his class. I stopped there and asked him the whereabouts of his assistant peon and why he was moving the wheels by himself. I got to know that the peon was on leave that day. So, I decided to push his wheelchair and drop him to his class.

Although his classroom was far from my own, and ultimately I was rebuked by my class teacher, I felt contented after helping my schoolmate.

A small helpful gesture from my end helped this boy reach his class safely and without facing much trouble.

Vocabulary for the Cue card

• Beggars: one who begs Eg: “ It is kind of you to help the beggars”
• Hesitated: pause in indecision before saying or doing something. Eg: She hesitated to sing at first.
• Chilly: freezing cold Eg: It’s chilly outside
• Pretend: fake act Eg: She is pretending to be my sister

Speaking Part 3

1 in general, why do people help others.

I think it’s the kindness that exists in most human hearts. Many of us have needed some help ourselves from time to time, and we know what it feels like to need something. We know it feels good to receive support from others when we need it. So we want to help others in the same way. Also, as I mentioned before, it is the happiness that we get from helping others in some way.

2 Do you think it’s important to help people who need help?

Of course, it’s important. We have a responsibility to do our part whether it’s in our family, our workplace, or amongst friends. None of us are like little islands with nothing or no one around us. We influence each other and contribute to the atmosphere and environment around us. And just as we want others to help us, we should naturally be willing to help others.

3 How do you feel after you have helped someone?

Usually, I feel very good when I’ve helped someone, even if the help I offered was beyond my limits. If it was a sacrifice, it seems that I am happier than when I began, and sometimes I seem to have more energy or time left for myself. It may sound funny, but sometimes it looks a little like magic how I end up with more time or more money or whatever after I have given some away to another person.

4 Many people only look out for themselves and never think about helping others. What do you think of this attitude?

I think it isn’t right. I know it is common, but it’s a tragic statement of modern life, at least in big cities. I know not everybody is that way, but nowadays a lot of people have become very selfish. It seems that so many people are in such a rush to get rich or get better jobs or into the best schools that they hardly even notice people who need help. Maybe if people were not so absorbed in their worlds, they would able to see other’s needs and would do something about it. At least I hope so.

5 What is the most important way for a country to help visitors?

Probably the most common help needed by foreigners is assisting with the language. I’ve also seen foreigners on the streets who seem to be a little lost. Sometimes they’re looking at their maps trying to find a famous tourist spot, so giving directions is another common way to help foreigners. I’ve done this a few times, and it was an exciting chance to talk to someone from another country.

6 Do you think that countries should help other countries in need?

Yes. By all means. Many times, our country has helped other countries, such as Thailand and Indonesia and India after the Tsunami, which caused a lot of damage to them. We also sent aid to the United States after the severe hurricanes a few years ago. Let us look at the world as a large neighbourhood, and if we can try and do as much as possible for our neighbours, everyone is a lot happier and friendlier towards each other.

7 What kinds of people need help in China?

I think one of the most prominent groups in our society needing help is the farmers. It would be better if the wealth and economic progress in our country were more evenly distributed. I live in a reasonably prosperous family. We’re not rich, but we do have plenty, and though I’m happy about this, I feel a little guilty that others have so much less than I do.

8 How does the government try to help these people?

I think one of the main ways is by investing in a business in a particular part of the country so that more jobs are created for the local people. Another way is by providing training, for example, in farming, in ways that can increase productivity. Also, the government should make sure that officials of the provinces are doing their jobs correctly. The government is trying to eliminate corruption at the local level.

9 Are there any non-government organizations in China that help people?

Yes, there are. At first, many of these were foreign, but it is changing now. Although there are international organizations that help people, there are also more and more Chinese charitable organizations being set up. I just read some articles about this.

10 Where do these organizations get their money from?

The foreign organizations get their money from overseas. Some of the funding is governmental, but a lot of it comes from private donations. Here in China, more individuals are getting involved in charities. It’s relatively new, but with the increased level of income of the people, there is more of an awareness to help others who are less fortunate.

Describe a Helpful Person [IELTS Speaking Part 2]

In today’s lesson, we are going to look at a few different IELTS speaking cue cards about people who helped you. Essentially they are all about the same thing: describe a helpful person . However, there are different ways that this could be expressed, and these may change your answer slightly.

Below I’m going to show you how to analyse the question, make suitable notes, and then give my own sample answer to a cue card. I’ll also make a few notes on the appropriate language for this sort of task.

In IELTS speaking part 2, you are often asked to describe a person. You need to read carefully because there are many kinds of people. It could be a popular person , a famous person, a well-dressed person, or a sportsperson, for example.

Today, however, we are going to focus on a helpful person or someone who has helped you .

You will be given a cue card by the examiner. You should read it and spend 1 minute thinking about your answer. It is a good idea to make some notes to help you speak because you will need to speak for between 1 and 2 minutes.

Make sure that you pay attention to the exact wording of the question, as well as the points that the cue card states.

Here is one possible cue card:

Describe a person you have worked or studied with that was very helpful. You should say: who he/she was how you met him/her what he/she did to help you and say what you learned from the experience.

Let’s think for a moment what you need to do here.

• You must describe someone who helped you. (Although this is not stated in the first line, it is stipulated in bullet point #3.)
• Can it be any person who helped you? No! It must be someone who you worked or studied with.
• You must give some explanation of who the person was – ie their relationship to you, and a little background – and also how you met them.
• Importantly, you should state how they helped you.
• Finally, you must give some information about what you learned.

It is very important that you address all these points, and particularly pay attention to #1 and #2 from my list above. If you missed either of these, you would score quite poorly.

As I mentioned above, it is possible to have very similar topics. However, remember that although some of them might be the same question phrased differently, others might be similar but distinct questions! If this was the case, you would need to give a totally different answer.

Here are some similar cue cards:

• Describe a person who helped you
• Describe a time when someone helped you
• Describe a time when you helped someone
• Describe a very helpful person who you know

There are more possibilities, but let’s just take a moment to consider why these might be treated differently from the previous example (Describe a person you have worked or studied with that was very helpful).

Firstly, “Describe a person who helped you” is essentially the same, except there is no limitation to work or study . In other words, this could be your friend or a family member.

Next, the two middle questions are not about describing a person… they are about describing the time/event/situation . Here, you would focus on the actual act of help rather than the person who helped you. This is really important!

Finally, this question is quite similar to the first, except that the person must be “very helpful”. In the first example, maybe your annoying brother helped you one time. However, here it must be a continually helpful person.

Once you have analyzed the question, you need to think about your answer quickly. Remember that you only have one minute to prepare. It is a good idea to make some notes on the paper that is provided, but you shouldn’t spend too much time doing it. Remember to never attempt to write a whole sentence, or else this will take up all of your time.

The secret to good note-taking is only writing one or two words that will remind you of something important. This could be useful vocabulary, an important point, the structure of your speech, a difficult phrase, etc.

Thinking about the first cue card that we looked at (Describe a person you have worked or studied with that was very helpful), I would make the following notes:

Colleague Supervisor Professional yet approachable Non-judgmental

These notes probably mean very little to you, but that’s ok. These are words that I thought of when brainstorming the question with my own personal experiences. I was thinking about a colleague of mine called Tim, whose position was head teacher at a school where I worked many years ago. His role was sort of a supervisory one, monitoring all the other teachers. Describing him as a person, I would say he was professional yet approachable , and I found him helpful because he was non-judgmental when giving advice.

All of the words I wrote in my notes were examples of good vocabulary, yet they helped me to structure my speech so that I wouldn’t forget what to say. Between looking at these and looking at the cue card, I would easily be able to speak for 1-2 minutes.

It is of course very important that I wrote these quickly, without wasting any time.

This is what I would say to describe a helpful person:

About ten years ago, as a young, inexperienced teacher, I worked with a man called Tim. He was my colleague but he was also the head teacher of this school, and so he was sort of a supervisor to the other teachers working there. Technically, Tim was our boss, but he didn’t act like a traditional boss. He was professional yet approachable , so you always felt that you could talk to him about things. I first met Tim when he offered me a job at his school, and from that moment on we got along very well. Tim was a really helpful guy, and he was always happy to share his experience with the less experienced teachers like me. He was non-judgmental , so you didn’t worry about doing something wrong. If you made a mistake at work, Tim would quietly help you make a change so that you didn’t do it that way again. I remember one time I was teaching a big class and Tim had to observe my teaching methods. This was a very stressful situation for me, but Tim was really helpful. He watched unobtrusively and then at the end of the lesson he gave me lots of useful advice. He didn’t criticize me in any way; instead, he simply told me ways I could improve. I believe that Tim’s advice helped me to become a much better teacher, and years later I am still incredibly grateful to him for mentoring me.

Note how I used grammar in order to establish the time of the events that occurred in my story. As this is about something that happened in the past, I use past simple for events that occurred once or were generally true in the past. For descriptions of a person, you use this tense:

• He was non-judgmental
• Tim was really helpful
• Tim was a really helpful guy

I also used a conditional clause to bring some complexity in. I used the past “If…, would…” conditional construction:

• If you made a mistake at work, Tim would quietly help you make a change…

At the end of my speech, I bring the listener into the present effects of Tim’s helpfulness by using the present simple: “I believe…” and “I am still…”

In terms of vocabulary, my speech is quite simple. I have highlighted in bold some of the less common vocabulary, but there is nothing especially rare or difficult. In fact, as I often tell my students, there is no need in the IELTS exam to use very complicated vocabulary. It is far better to use simple vocabulary correctly.

When talking about people for IELTS, you can try to mention their character traits and use adjectives to describe a person in terms of their personality rather than their physical appearance. Avoid boring language and focus on using interesting and insightful adjectives.

It is also worth thinking about synonyms . These are very handy for IELTS. Here are some synonyms for “helpful”:

It is important to note that most of these words are not exact synonyms. Many of them can’t even be used to describe people! Thus, you must be careful and accurate in your word choice.

A person could be “accessible,” for example, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are helpful. Someone “supportive” is giving a bit of help but again that doesn’t necessarily mean they are very helpful. A “neighbourly” person, however, is probably quite helpful when called upon.

Remember to keep calm in your speaking exam and treat the examiner like a normal person. It is very easy to get nervous and worried before the exam, but these nerves can ruin your band score. Try practising with a friend before your exam, or find a speaking partner to help you.
